6 Gen. T. W. Sweeny, F. B., Commanding the Armies of Ireland. T. G. Richardson, Photographer (St. Albans, Vt.) c. 1866

Notes: Thomas William Sweeny (December 25, 1820 – April 10, 1892) was an Irish soldier who served in the Mexican-American War and then was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Sweeny was wounded in the groin at the Battle of Cerro Gordo, and his right arm was so badly injured at the Battle of Churubusco that it had to be amputated. In 1866, he commanded the ill-fated Fenian invasion of Canada, after which he was arrested for breaking neutrality laws between the United States and Britain, but was soon released. He was reinstated with his former rank of major later that year, and retired from the Regular Army in May 1870 as a brigadier general.

Notes: John Francis O’Mahony (1816 – 7 February 1877) was a Gaelic scholar and the founding member of the Fenian Brotherhood in the United States, sister organisation to the Irish Republican Brotherhood. The close of the civil war in the spring of 1865 gave a great impetus to the Fenians, owing to the number of Irish-American soldiers that were disbanded and anxious to see service elsewhere. Money poured into the Fenian exchequer; probably $500,000 was subscribed between 1860 and 1867. Many differences occurred between O’Mahony and James Stephens and the Central Council relative to the policy to be pursued for the attainment of their object, but O’Mahony remained president of the organisation for several years. 11 General John O’Neill J. B. Roberts & Co., Photographers (58 State Street, Rochester, N.Y.)

Ridgeway made O’Neill a Fenian hero. He had won the only success the Fenians ever achieved in their numerous enterprises against Canada. He had handled his force well, and it should be added that he had kept his men under strict control and that there was little looting or disorder. The episode shortly led to the Roberts party of the Fenian Brotherhood appointing him “inspector general of the Irish Republican Army.” He took Roberts’ place as president at the end of 1867. Negotiations for reunion of his branch of the brotherhood with that formerly headed by John O’Mahony and now led by John Savage failed, and O’Neill proceeded to collect funds and acquire and distribute arms for another Canadian adventure. These activities caused considerable alarm and much defensive preparation in Canada during 1868 and 1869. However, O’Neill’s organization had been penetrated by Canadian agents, and in particular one of his staff, Henri Le Caron (Thomas Beach*), was in the employ of Gilbert McMicken*, chief of the Canadian detective police. Early in 1870 O’Neill quarrelled with his “Senate,” losing much support. On 25 May, with those portions of the brotherhood still prepared to follow him, he attempted a raid at Eccles Hill on the border near Frelighsburg, Quebec. Ample warning had enabled the Canadian authorities to take precautions. The Fenian vanguard was fired on as soon as it crossed the border, and fled. O’Neill himself was arrested by a United States marshal. At the end of July he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, but with other Fenian prisoners was pardoned by President Ulysses S. While in Tennessee, O’Neill joined the militant Irish-American movement, the Fenian Brotherhood, which eschewed politics in favor of militant action to expel the British presence in Ireland. –SOLD– Notes: The Fenian insurgents, led by Brigadier General John O’Neill, a former Union cavalry commander who had specialized in anti-guerrilla warfare in Ohio, secured boats and transferred some 800 men across the Niagara, landing above Fort Erie, before dawn on June 1, 1866. An additional 200–400 Fenians and supplies crossed later during the morning and early afternoon until the US Navy gunboat, the USS Michigan, began intercepting Fenian barges at 2:20 p.m. — 13 hours after the first Fenian advance party landed in Canada.[8] An advance party of 250 men of Lieutenant Colonel George Owen Starr’s 17th Kentucky Fenian Regiment landed in Canada at about 1:30 a.m. and raised a large Fenian green flag with a gold Irish harp some two hours in advance of O’Neill’s main force. Starr’s advance party rushed to seize the town, cut telegraph wires and take control of the railway

13 W. R. Roberts Unknown

Notes: William Randall Roberts (February 6, 1830 – August 9, 1897) was a diplomat, Fenian Society member, and United States Representative from New York (1871–1875). Born in County Cork, Ireland, he immigrated to the United States in July 1849, received a limited schooling, and was a merchant in New York City until 1869, until he retired. In 1865, Roberts was president of the Fenian Society, an Irish nationalist organization noted for its raids on British installations in Canada. He participated in the raid into Canada in 1866, for which he was arrested by the Government. Roberts was elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat twice, to the Forty-second and Fortythird Congresses (March 4, 1871 – March 4, 1875). After his time in the House, he was member of the board of aldermen of New York City in 1877, an unsuccessful candidate for sheriff in 1879, and was appointed as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Chile by President Grover Cleveland on April 2, 1885, serving until August 19, 1889. Notes: James Stephens (26 January 1825 – 29 March 1901) was an Irish Republican, and the founding member of an originally unnamed revolutionary organisation in Dublin. This organisation, founded on 17 March 1858, was later to become known as the Irish Republican Brotherhood (i.r.b.),[1][2] also referred to by contemporaries as the Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood. [...] In mid-1863, Stephens informed his colleagues he wished to start a newspaper, with financial aid from [Col. John Francis] O’Mahony and the Fenian Brotherhood in America. The offices were established at 12 Parliament Street, almost at the gates of Dublin Castle.[52] The first number of the Irish People appeared on 28 November 1863.[53] [...] Shortly after the establishment of the paper, Stephens departed on an American tour and to attend to organizational matters.[55] Before leaving, he entrusted to Luby a document containing secret resolutions on the Committee of Organization or Executive of the irb. Fenian Military Scrapbook A Living Document

Thomas Clark Scoble (1840–1900). Soldier, civil engineer. Born at Kingsbridge, Devonshire, England on 12 June 1840, son of John and Mary Anne Scoble, he received his education at private schools in England and Canada and at the University of Toronto where he studied civil engineering from 1857 to 1860. In December 1866 he married Georgiana Sophia, the daughter of F. F. Carruthers of Toronto, and they had six children. His military career began in 1861 at the time of the Trent affair, when he joined the volunteer militia. He became staff adjutant and town Mayor of Toronto in 1866, and was Brigadier-Major and inspector of drill sheds at Toronto from 1866 to 1870. He was appointed a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1871. He served as secretary of the Ontario Rifle Association from 1869 to 1874 and as commander of the Second District Engineer (Field) Company from 1875 to 1881. He became Brigadier-Major and district quarter-master in Winnipeg in April 1885 and in 1889 was awarded a medal for service in the North-West Rebellion. As an engineer he compiled a series of maps for the Ontario Government. He was employed on the construction of the Grand Trunk Railway, and, in 1880, on the Canadian Pacific Railway, and was engineer for Growski and Macpherson in the construction of the International Bridge at Fort Erie. He was employed in a number of capacities for the Ontario Government, serving at various times as Deputy Inspector of Asylums and Prisons, Assistant Provincial Secretary, special Commissioner to London and Paris with

reference to the Ontario boundary. He organized the Ontario School of Agriculture and was in charge of the Engineering and Sanitary Works of Ontario public institutions, 1872-77. He moved to Winnipeg in 1881. In 1884 he was secretary of the special committee of the Legislature to enquire into the feasibility of a Hudson Bay Railway. In his later years he devoted himself almost exclusively to this project, and made trips to the Bay in 1895 and 1899. He was editor of the Nor’Wester (1894-1895) and managing editor of the Great West Publishing Company (1898-1899). Author of Canadian Volunteers’ Hand-Book for Field Service (1868) and the writer of a number of articles on military engineering, Imperial and Colonial Defence and the Hudson Bay Railway. Prior to his death on 26 October 1900, he was elected to the Winnipeg Parks Board. He was buried at St. John’s Cemetery. His papers are in the Archives of Manitoba.
