3 Fancy Goods & Yankee Notions I
n presenting this varied selection of job printed or steam press ephemera I have chosen to illustrate the majority of the items. It is not only for the convenience of assembling a catalogue, but because many of the items are best described visually. Until fairly recently these minor documents have been overlooked for their importance in documenting an era of massive expansion in the building of great nations.
W
ith the illustrated items, you might find that the graphic appeal evokes your interest, while others may find the historical content paramount. It is ephemera that accurately displays the Victorian reaction to change, reflected in the infinite use of varied typefaces, colours, and ornamental embellishments. The advent of new printing methods at this time also pushed the typographer to explore new dimensions of display and layout.
T
hrough these items, which I have loosely grouped, we can research the origins of business, commerce, institutions, the political atmosphere, and the social movements in the history of Canada and the United States. A unique view of the character of this important era is offered through these small, but firsthand, rich snippets of information. Neil David MacDonald, 2014
