W
elcome to the beautiful destruction of Train Wrecks, the latest offering of historic photographs by Rare Photo Gallery. With this unique collection, we journey through the dangers of early rail transport and travel. Very early trains were slow, made short runs, and accidents were few, the first recorded accident occurring in 1832 near Quincy, Massachusetts. It wasn’t until 1853 in the US, and 1854 in Canada, with the massive expansion, increased speeds, and newly introduced night runs, that a catastrophe with a major loss of life occurred. Railroad accidents were sometimes caused by human error, but there were often other causes, including such unforeseeable and seemingly trivial hazards as cows on the track. The resulting wrecks can be classified into at least ten categories: derailments; headon collisions; rear-end collisions; bridge disasters; telescopic collisions (often the most devastating, occurring when rail cars are violently forced into and through each other); fires (early on, often caused by gas or oil lighting); running gear failures/hotboxes or broken parts; runaway trains; crossing accidents; and boiler explosions. Beyond the bounds of these categories, the resultant
compelling images leave us to ponder the circumstances that led to such shocking scenes, stories often lost to history. Not without pausing to acknowledge the death and devastation caused by these catastrophes, as we look at the carefully composed images that frame them for posterity, their inherent abstract beauty comes through. With entangled wreckage frozen in time, these captured moments command an aesthetic appreciation of the chaotic, smoldering aftermath of split-seconds of destruction. They present abstract sculptures—masses of twisted metal and splintered wood—and show precarious attempts at salvage and survivors and onlookers milling about, themselves contemplating the wreckage and the loss before them. The photographs presented here are both images and documents, and are often the only surviving records of the events they represent. They leave us with more questions than answers, and in this way also inspire future research that can help flesh out the lost or forgotten parts of a compelling early history of rail systems in North America.
