Paige Recliner Glider IN SEA SHELL

Sink into cushioned goodness & reap the benefits of an electric recliner and glider Breastfeeding Saviour! Had doubts about how much I really needed this when pregnant but so glad I have it now. Bub and I have had a difficult breastfeeding journey but a semi reclined position with the leg rest half way up is our favourite position. Wouldn’t have been possible without the electric recliner version to be able to tweak that incline. Given the long hours you’ll spend in this chair the USB port to charge your devices (kindle, phone, iPad) is really handy.

OLD WIVES’ TALES FOR PREDICTING GENDER

By Emily Sadler

Trying to predict your baby’s gender? From Chinese Gender charts to decoding your cravings, these old wives tales reveal if you’re having a boy or a girl.

“So, are you having a boy or a girl?” Every pregnant woman has been asked this question several times. Even if you’re choosing to not find out the sex of your baby before your little one arrives, it sure is fun to guess, right? That’s why we’ve put together this list of old wives’ tales for predicting the gender. (Remember: There’s no actual science backing up any of these. Plus, the only thing gender tells us is what genitals our kids have, not how they will eventually identify. So it’s really just for fun!)

1. SWEET VERSUS SALTY CRAVINGS

4. PREGNANCY GLOW, OR NO

If you find yourself craving all things sweet, that’s a sign you’re having a girl. Cravings for salty or even protein-rich foods mean it might be a boy. (And if you’re craving everything? Well, that just means you’re pregnant.)

If your complexion is bright and your hair resembles that of a Pantene commercial, you could be having a boy. If that much-talkedabout “pregnancy glow” is MIA and you’re breaking out, it may just mean you’ve got a girl growing. (It’s said little girls steal Mum’s good looks.)

2. THE GARLIC TEST Put this one to the test at your own—and your partner’s—risk! If you’re able to eat a lot of garlic but not smell like it, apparently that means you’re carrying a girl.

3. MORNING SICKNESS Unfortunately, this early pregnancy symptom doesn’t tend to discriminate. But if you’re suffering from excessive nausea and morning sickness, it’s said you could be having a girl.

16 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

5. PARTNER’S WEIGHT GAIN As this old wives’ tale goes, if your partner is gaining weight alongside you (also known as “sympathy weight”), that could be a sign that you’re carrying a girl. (Who wants to go to the gym when there’s nesting to be done?)

PREGNANCY 6. MOODY VERSUS MELLOW If you’re feeling more moody than mellow, you might be having a girl. If you’re more chilled out, legend has it you should get ready for a boy.

7. THE EYE TEST Look in the mirror for about a minute. If your pupils are dilating, it means you’re having a boy.

8. CARRYING HIGH VERSUS LOW According to pregnancy lore, carrying high means you’re having a girl, while carrying low means it’s a boy.

9. THE RING TEST Tie a ring on a string and hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circular motion, you could be having a girl, but if it’s swinging side to side, it means you’re having a boy.

10. HEART RATE During your next ultrasound, pay attention to baby’s heart rate. If that little ticker is beating faster than 140 beats per minute, get ready for a girl.

11. CHINESE GENDER CHART Place one finger on the age you were when you conceived and another finger on the month of conception. Where your fingers meet in the middle will tell you if you’re expecting a little boy or girl. Are you ready to try this fun chart out? Check out our website for the chart.

12. BLOOD PRESSURE BEFORE YOU CONCEIVE This one is a little more tricky to do. A study found that the higher a woman’s blood pressure is 26 weeks before she conceived, the more likely she is to have a boy. So if you had a doctor’s appointment before you started trying to get pregnant, look back and see what your blood pressure was—it could be the very scientific clue to whether you’re having a little dude or dudette. So, based on these old wives’ tales, do you think you’re having a boy or a girl?

Ramzi’s Ultrasound Method The Ramzi ultrasound method claims that you can determine fetal sex based on the side of the uterus the placenta lies on. If the placenta is on the left, the method claims it means the fetus is female. If it’s on the right, it supposedly means male.

HEALTH & FITNESS

BEST FITNESS EXERCISES

for

Postpartumn Congratulations on your new little one! We all know what it means for your sleep, but what does it mean for your postpartum fitness?

For some women, exercise is the last thing on their mind during the first month postpartum. In fact, many obstetricians and midwives suggest waiting four to six weeks after you give birth before beginning to exercise.

1. START POSTPARTUM WORKOUTS SLOWLY Swimming is incredibly effective in working your heart and lungs without putting too much pressure on your joints. For postnatal women, swimming or an aqua aerobics class are effective in adding muscle tone, while providing a gentle exercise that won’t strain your body too much after birth. However, it is advisable to stay clear of

18 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

the swimming pool until any postnatal bleeding has stopped and scarring has healed if you had a caesarean.

2. PRENATAL YOGA Many postnatal women find yoga beneficial, as it encourages relaxation in the post-birth whirlwind while helping to strengthen core muscles and prevent back pain. Jill Simpson, founder of MINDBODY studio Ebb&Flow explains: “Postnatal yoga is a great way to get strong again in specific areas, such as your core muscles. It’s also a time to focus on you, connect with other mums whilst boosting your energy.” There are even yoga classes you can bring your baby to.

3. POSTPARTUMN PILATES Pilates is one of the most effective pre- and postnatal exercises as it targets the muscles that generally weaken during pregnancy. Erica Foulds, master trainer at MINDBODY studio Ten Health & Fitness explains: “As Pilates is non-impact, compared to other forms of exercise, the risk of injury is reduced, so not only is it physically beneficial and advisable, but knowing you’re exercising safely can also help to reduce anxiety and provide reassurance during classes. “There are also mental and emotional benefits, as Pilates is a highly immersive and focused form of exercise; the focus and concentration required make a great ‘time-out’ from everyday pressures.”

PREGNANCY

Pregnancy MYTHS & THE FACTS By Tommys

You don’t need to eat for two, flying is usually fine and you can dye your hair. Find out the truth behind 8 of the most misunderstood pregnancy myths.

MYTH 1: YOU CAN’T EXERCISE Exercise is good for you in pregnancy and is not dangerous for your baby. As long there are no complications, you should be able to continue with most exercises you did before getting pregnant. You may need to slow down as your pregnancy progresses or if your maternity team advises you to. There are also a few exercises to avoid in pregnancy. If you were not very active before you became pregnant, start with gentle exercise, such as walking. You can also try this introduction to pregnancy yoga. Yoga has been shown to help you with your physical and mental health during pregnancy and through birth.

22 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

MYTH 2: YOU CAN’T DYE YOUR HAIR Research (though limited) shows it is safe to colour your hair in pregnancy. The chemicals in hair dye are not highly toxic. Some studies have found that very high doses of the chemicals in hair dyes may cause harm. But the amount you may be exposed to when colouring your hair is very low. You should always carry out a patch test before using a permanent or semi-permanent hair dye, even if you are using your regular brand. Ask your hairdresser to do a patch test if you are in a salon.

PREGNANCY

MYTH 3: YOU SHOULD EAT FOR TWO

MYTH 7: YOU WILL HAVE STRANGE CRAVINGS

Needing to eat for 2 during pregnancy is a myth. Your body doesn’t need any extra calories until the third trimester, when you may need around 200 more per day. Have a look at what 200 calories looks like.

What do you mean, you’re not craving pickles?! Pregnancy is different for everyone, so not everyone will have cravings.

It is important to listen to your body and try to eat a healthy, balanced diet during pregnancy. Try not to put too much focus on counting calories. Just know that your baby doesn’t need you to eat lots more to give them all they need to grow.

MYTH 4: YOU CAN’T FLY ON AN AEROPLANE DURING PREGNANCY Flying isn’t harmful to you or your baby. But you should talk to your midwife or doctor about any health issues, complications or concerns you have before booking anything. After week 28 of pregnancy, the airline may want a letter from your midwife or doctor confirming your due date, and that you aren’t at risk of complications. Check your airline’s policy online before you book anything. It’s also a good idea to make sure that your travel insurance covers you in pregnancy and that you take your medical notes with you.

MYTH 5: YOU CAN’T HAVE SEX WHILE PREGNANT

We don’t know why some people have cravings, but they are probably triggered by hormonal changes in your body, which can affect taste and smell. Speak to your midwife or doctor if you crave inedible things, such as dirt, clay or laundry detergent. This is a serious condition called pica, which is caused by a lack of iron (anaemia).

MYTH 8: YOUR BABY WILL ARRIVE ON THEIR DUE DATE Your due date is useful to help you plan, especially for maternity leave, but remember that the date is only an estimate. It is common for babies to be born after their estimated due date, particularly for first pregnancies. If your baby is born before 37 weeks, this is called a premature or preterm birth. If you are at risk of premature birth, your doctors will support you to make sure that your baby gets all the extra care they need.

It’s safe to have sex when you’re pregnant unless your doctor or midwife has told you not to. For example, if you have had bleeding, have a low-lying placenta or cervical weakness, you may be advised to avoid having sex until after having your baby. It’s normal for your sex drive to change in pregnancy. Some enjoy sex during pregnancy and others don’t. Later in pregnancy, an orgasm, or sex itself, can sometimes trigger Braxton Hicks contractions. This is normal but don’t hesitate to talk to your midwife if you have any concerns. If you or your sexual partner are having sex with other people during your pregnancy, it’s important to use a barrier form of contraception, such as a condom, to protect you and your baby from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

MYTH 6: YOU WILL BE GLOWING AND HAPPY ALL THE TIME Unfortunately, not everyone will feel very ‘glowy’ during pregnancy. Pregnancy is an emotional time, and your hormones can cause highs and lows in your mood. You may also be coping with pregnancy symptoms and worrying about giving birth or adjusting to parenthood. It can be overwhelming, so if you are not feeling the glow. If you are struggling with your feelings, try talking to your midwife or doctor. They will not judge you for how you feel and you are not alone. Up to 1 in 5 women in the UK develop some form of mental health problem, such as anxiety and depression, during their pregnancy or in the year after birth.

MILK STRIKE!

Stopped breastfeeding or formula, some toddlers refuse cow’s milk.

24 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

DEVELOPMENT

Parents of milk-striking kids can breathe easier knowing their children do not have a condition, just a fussy palate. Taking a child off of breast milk or infant formula can be frustrating for moms, especially when their 1-year-old refuses to drink cow’s milk. “Realizing that it’s not as sweet as breast milk or formula, some children flat out reject cow’s milk,” says Eileen Tyrala, MD, a pediatrician and baby formula specialist at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. “The milk strike,” as some pediatricians call it, can even turn into a lifelong refusal to drink cow’s milk. The problem for a child who stops drinking either milk or formula is the potential for a vitamin D or calcium deficiency. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Both calcium and vitamin D are essential for building strong bones and muscles. Babies and younger children with inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake are at an increased risk for weaker bones and even rickets, says Dr. Tyrala.

WHAT YOU CAN DO There are two ways to solve this problem: coaxing the child into drinking cow’s milk or adding food or drinks to the child’s diet that contain vitamin D and calcium. To get your child to drink cow’s milk: • Mix whole milk with some formula or breast milk. • Add small amounts of strawberry or chocolate flavoring to milk. Dietitian Althea Zanecosky, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, cautions that it may take up to 10 attempts before a young child accepts a new food, including cow’s milk. She also warns not to give too large a serving. Four ounces is the appropriate milk serving for a 1-year-old.

If that does not work, try to substitute the following foods or drinks to gain calcium and vitamin D: • Try switching to almond, coconut, rice or soy milk, all of which have equivalent calcium and vitamin D to cow’s milk. • Try flavored yogurt. • Offer cheese products (cottage cheese, mozzarella string cheese), or add cheese to sandwiches. • Switch to calcium-fortified orange juice, breads and breakfast cereals.

WHY THEY REJECT MILK Why do babies reject cow’s milk in the first place? According to Dr. Tyrala, it comes down to each child’s taste preference. Both breast milk and formula are sweeter than cow’s milk. In addition, neither formula nor breast milk taste anything like cow’s milk, so switching to it is a significant change. The problem has nothing to do with lactose intolerance, as lactose is a sugar that is present.

WHAT TO DO IF MY TODDLER WON’T DRINK MILK Make milk taste better Dairy products which are rich in calcium include yogurt, cheese and ice cream. Milk, low-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt can be used to make tasty milkshakes or fruit

smoothies The traditional example is pouring milk over cereal, but children might enjoy putting food in milk or eating milk dishes such as macaroni and cheese, casseroles or soups. Add milk to other foods During mealtimes or snacks, make milk the drink of choice by offering pure milk or chocolate (or strawberry) milk. Toddlers love to have independence, but you can still direct their decisions. Begin small Begin with 6 ounces of milk for children between 1 to 3 years and 8 ounces of milk for older children. You can even begin with 1 or 2 ounces (or even a sip) at a time if your child is unwilling at first. Don’t give up. Keep offering your child little amounts of milk in hope that they will eventually start enjoying. Offer other dairy products During mealtimes or snacks, make milk the drink of choice by offering pure milk or chocolate (or strawberry) milk. Children enjoy flavored milk more than white milk, but you can control the amount of flavoring and reducing it over time so that they are not getting increased sugar in their diet. Make the serving appealing Milk can be served in a favorite cup, use a fun straw, or try a sports bottle with a pull-up spout. In this manner, the child will enjoy drinking milk as they will concentrate more on the container than the content. Count the calcium from all foods Dairy products contain the well-known amount of calcium. Other foods such as tofu, sardines, some leafy green vegetables and calcium-fortified foods such as fortified orange juice, cereals and other breakfast foods contain this valuable nutrient, too. Stay positive about milk Staying positive is a vital way of making milk a good option for your child. Be a role model by drinking milk yourself on a regular basis (also avoid any negative comments). in all three products, says Tyrala. Parents of milk-striking kids can breathe easier knowing their children do not have a condition, just a fussy palate.

COMPLETE GUIDE TO

Safe Sleep The health and safety of a newborn baby is the top priority for any new parents out there. However, it can be overwhelming. Especially for first-time parents, who have little-to-no experience in what it takes to keep a newborn safe. They have read all the books, and listened to the experts and experienced friends and family, but it can still be a lot to take in. One of the biggest concerns for parents is sleep. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is one of the top worries of new parents everywhere, and it can add to their sleep deprivation. They spend a lot of time at night, awake and watching their baby, instead of getting the sleep they need.

Why Is Safe Sleep So Important? It may seem obvious, but safe sleep is one of the most important things that parents need to pay attention to when it comes to their newborn’s wellbeing, and it will carry them through infancy and into toddlerhood. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has their own guidelines for safe sleep, but also why it is so important.

26 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

According to Health, when you implement safe sleep measures, you are reducing the risk of SIDS and other causes of sleeprelated deaths in newborns and infants. This would include suffocation, and positions that would see them asphyxiate while they are asleep. Since mum and dad are usually sleeping when the baby is, it is the best thing they can do to make sure their baby is safe when they are not there.

DEVELOPMENT

The Safe Sleep 7 Clothing Matters

• Try to keep the room temperature between 16 -20°C

When we think of safe sleep, we are quick to jump to where a baby is sleeping, but clothing can be just as important. It is important to make sure that the baby is comfortable when they are sleeping to prevent them from getting too cold, or too hot during the night when mom and dad are not monitoring their temperature.

• Always put your baby on their back for every sleep, day and night

There is a good rule of thumb when it comes to dressing a baby for sleep to keep them safe. The rule of thumb is that you want to give them one extra layer than you are comfortable sleeping in. If you are comfortable in your home with just pajamas, you are going to want to add one more layer to your baby. This could be pajamas and a sleep sack/swaddle. Just make sure nothing is too loose, and the pajamas are a comfortable fit.

• Give your baby a clear, safe sleep space, in the same room as you. • A clear cot is a safer cot • Firm sleep surface • Keep him lightly dressed. • Don’t drink (alchol) and sleep together.

SLEEP FACTS Did you know? Baby sleep cycle are about 45-60 minutes long.

What Should They Sleep In? There seems to be endless amounts of products on the market that a baby could sleep in, but they are not all going to be rated the same when it comes to sleep. According to Canada, very few items are considered safe for infant sleep, and they include a bassinet, crib or cradle (like a Moses basket). Items like swings, car seats and other infant seats and containers are not considered safe for sleep and if a baby falls asleep in any of these, they should be moved to a safer sleep surface.

The Deal With Co-Sleeping

Did You know? Most Newborns deprive their parents of 350-400 hours of sleep in their first year.

Did you know? It takes babies 20 minutes to enter a deep sleep

The terms co-sleeping and bedsharing seem to be used interchangeably, but they are very different. Co-sleeping is when a parent and baby share a room, but they have their own sleeping areas. This is considered safest. According to NPR, the recommendation is that infants share a room with their parents for at least 6 months, but they should try and make it to a year. This has also been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. This means that the baby has their own sleeping surface (like mentioned earlier), but they are in the same room as their parent. This can make it easier for parents, who don’t have to travel too far to get to their baby in the middle of the night. They will also be alerted if something is not right during the night.

The Deal With Bed Sharing Bed sharing is when mom brings the baby into the bed with her to sleep. This is a preferred choice by a lot of parents, because it does typically lead to more sleep at night. It is also convenient for a mother who is breastfeeding throughout the night. However, despite the seemingly benefits, it is not recommended by most health panels. That is because there is an increased risk of a baby being trapped by their parents, or getting caught in blankets and other sleeping devices. According to Healthline, this type of family sleeping is very common in countries around the world, and while it may be common in the US, it is not advised. However, that doesn’t mean that families are going to abide by it, so there are safety guidelines that families can follow to try and make it as safe as possible.

Toddler Bath Time:

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD For many toddlers, having a bath and splashing around in the tub is a fun and relaxing part of their day. For other toddlers, bath time is not as appealing, especially as they develop their likes and dislikes, learn how to say “no,” and prefer to do things on their own. This is completely normal behavior, but it can sure make bath time a challenge! Read on to learn how to help your child enjoy taking a bath.

WHY KIDS MAY NOT LIKE TAKING BATHS It can be hard to understand what’s not to love about warm water, bubbles, and bath toys, not to mention having Mom or Dad’s undivided attention. Yet some young children - perhaps even your toddler - seem to have an aversion to bathing and bath time.

Here are a few common reasons kids dislike taking baths: Sensory sensitivity. Some toddlers dislike bath time because they don’t enjoy the sensory experience - they don’t like being wet or getting their hair washed. Or maybe they’re too cold when they get out of the bath or the towel is scratchy against their skin.

40 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

Anxiety or apprehension. If your toddler’s aversion to bath time comes on suddenly, they may have had a bad experience with water and now feel nervous or fearful. Perhaps the baby-bath temperature was too hot or cold, or maybe your baby nearly slipped once and that scared them. Preferring other activities. Some kids don’t want to stop what they’re doing in order to hop in the tub. For some children, it’s hard to swap playing and other fun activities for taking a bath. (This is partly why it helps to make toddler bath time more fun!) If you’re encountering strong opposition at bath time, experts recommend not forcing your child to take a bath. Instead, focus on being patient, getting to the root of the problem, and addressing your little one’s needs. When you understand the reason behind the aversion, it will be a lot easier to know how to get your baby or toddler to like baths!

DEVELOPMENT

HOW OFTEN SHOULD TODDLERS BATHE? Deciding how often to bathe your toddler may depend in part on how sticky and dirty they get! But unless your little one is playing in the mud every day, bathing a toddler on a daily basis wouldn’t be necessary and may not be ideal, as kids have delicate skin that can become dry and irritated. Giving your toddler a bath two or three times a week is usually plenty. Of course, it’s OK to bathe more often as needed. If your toddler puts up a fight at bath time, it’s better not to insist, even if that means less frequent bathing. A quick sponge bath or wiping your toddler with a soapy washcloth will work until they get used to baths.

HOW TO MAKE BATH TIME FOR KIDS MORE FUN Whether your toddler loves or hates bath time, you can take advantage of these tips and tricks on how to make it more fun for all. When bath time doesn’t feel like a chore or obligation, there’s a better chance that children will embrace it - and getting your toddler to take a bath becomes a lot easier. You’ll find a few of our best strategies below. Include Bath Toys or Music Bringing toys into your toddler’s bath is the oldest trick in the book, and it works. Kids love splashing around at bath time, and it’s even more enjoyable if you plop some boats, animals, squirters, cups, dolls, letters, or balls into the water and play some lively tunes. When choosing bath toys, look for nontoxic, water-friendly varieties that are made with plastic and without holes, if possible. Mold, bacteria, or fungus can grow inside toys or along creases, so solid toys are best. Set the toys out to dry after every bath and store them away from the tub in between bath times.

USE BATH PAINTS If you think toys will make your toddler love taking a bath, get ready for the power of bath paints! That’s right - painting in the bath. Let your little one paint on their body or the tub, then wash everything off during the bath. Not only is it fun for your child, but it’s also easy to clean! (Note: Be sure to test the bathroom grout for staining before the art session begins!)

ADD BATH TIME TO YOUR ROUTINE Kids thrive with structure and order, so if you make bath time part of their daily or nightly bedtime on certain days (say, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for example), it may help your child embrace it. Your little one will know to expect it, and that could make all the difference. If you bathe your child in the evening, a calming bath and bedtime routine can also help your toddler sleep better - a win-win!

Bathtime Must Haves

LET YOUR TODDLER TAKE THE LEAD Giving your child some control over bath time may make it more enjoyable. Let your little one choose which bubbles to use, or squeeze the shampoo bottle, or use the washcloth without your help. Letting toddlers make decisions and do things on their own, such as when getting dressed or at bath time, helps boost their confidence and encourages their emerging self care skills and independence.

CUDDLEPENGUIN BAMBOO KIDS TOWEL CUDDLEDRY Price: £34.99 www.cuddledry.com

INCLUDE PRETEND PLAY Providing toys during bath time is a game changer for toddlers, but play (and especially pretend play and any kind of unstructured play) is also essential for your little one’s overall development, as toddlers learn through play. Why not encourage it in the bath? Some ideas for pretend play in the bath include using kitchen items (kid-safe and water-safe) like a strainer or cup while pretending to make dinner bathing a doll and pretending to be the caretaker acting out stories you and your child read the night before playing games like Simon Says creating a story with the bath toys pretending the tub is the ocean and making discoveries.

Baby SOS: PROTECTING YOUR BABY’S PRECIOUS SKIN MICROBIOME THE WINTER

46 l JAN-FEB 2024 l project-baby.co.uk

DEVELOPMENT

As the temperature drops outside and we switch on the central heating it can play havoc with an adult’s skin. So, for a second, imagine what it must be like for a baby. Whilst your little one’s skin may be super soft most of the time, we know that, like an adult, it needs more protection in the winter. Baby skin is more permeable, prone to dryness and vulnerable to being damaged particularly in the first few months of life as it adapts to life in the outside world. The skin of a full term healthy newborn baby is 30% thinner than that of an adult, whilst premature and unwell babies are at even greater risk of skin damage as it can be even thinner. Babies skin also loses water faster than an adult too. Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is the normal, organic loss of water vapor from the skin, not to be confused with sweating. The rate of TEWL is an accurate indication of the integrity of a skin barrier, and the health of that individual’s skin and its ability to retain moisture.

1. KEEP BATHS LUKEWARM Despite our research showing that 36% of new parents* believe they need to bathe their baby every day this isn’t true and three times a week is usually plenty. Keeping baths lukewarm will help to ensure baby’s skin doesn’t dry out. Aim to do some skin-to-skin contact after bathing your baby to help build their microbiome back up and you can breathe in that newborn natural baby smell. My Expert Midwife’s Mega Mild Cleansing Wash - midwife-developed, paediatrician approved and dermatologically tested is gentle and naturally derived, leaving baby’s skin feeling clean and soft. Containing soothing calendula, marshmallow, and oat kernel it can be used from your baby’s first wash and is suitable for even eczema prone skin.

2. DON’T OVERHEAT THE HOUSE Whilst it can be tempting to crank up the heating in the winter months, overheated air can actually dry out skin even more. Keep the house at a comfortable heat but cool enough that you can layer baby up for a sleep. The optimal temperature for a baby’s room is 16-20 degrees Centigrade. Putting a humidifier in baby’s room can also help combat the drying effect of forced heat.

3. USE THE RIGHT MOISTURISER Studies show the differences between newborn and adult skin when it comes to TEWL. The average rates of TEWL were 3-5 times higher in babies than adults which highlights the importance of using baby specific skin care products that contain no harsh chemicals. The first few months of a newborn’s life shows the highest rate of TEWL, so a good skincare practice that’s implemented as part of your daily routine can help reduce dryness, support skin development and better protect baby’s skin in the future.

Moisturiser can be extremely helpful in preventing and treating a baby’s dry skin but make sure you choose one that is as natural as possible and free from harsh chemicals. The Mega Mild Moisture Milk from My Expert Midwife contains hydrating and softening grape, argan and rosehip oils and soothing oat kernel to help keep your baby’s skin soft and soothed. Safe to use from newborn onwards plus dermatologically tested and paediatrician approved for ultimate reassurance. For extra sensitive, irritable skin try the 100% naturally derived Super Charged Skin Salve. 100% naturally derived, this gentle formula targets and sooths dry, sore and inflamed skin and contains protecting and anti-inflammatory lanolin and calendula and soothing oat kernel oil. A wealth of supporting information on caring for baby’s skin, the microbiome, when and how to bath a baby and common baby skin problems and solutions is available at www.myexpertmidwife.com. The full baby range helping you care for your newborn - from the moment you prepare your birth plan throughout your baby’s first year – is available via their website and at leading retailers including ASDA, Boots & Superdrug.

SO HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR BABY’S SKIN THIS WINTER? The winter air is tough on everyone’s skin, but babies are extra susceptible. A few simple steps can help to prevent dry skin, chapped cheeks and other winter skin discomforts.

WEANING

Top Tip “Use a soft weaning spoon they’re nice and small so you can try little teeny spoonfuls at first.”

Happy Eating A survey, launched by leading baby food brand Organix, reveals that one of the biggest barriers to introducing new foods during weaning is baby’s facial expression in response to new tastes. It can be challenging to introduce new foods during weaning and the faces babies pull can be interpreted by parents as disgust or dislike at what they are trying, which can make it all the harder. The Organix weaning survey reveals: •   More than half (55%) of mums say a baby’s facial expression puts them off trying to     encourage their baby to like a new taste and flavour. •   49% say it’s a struggle to keep babies interested in food. •   42% say they find it hard to get babies to try new foods during weaning. From sweet carrot to sour lemon and bitter broccoli, weaning is the beginning of a taste adventure, the first opportunity for your baby to explore and experience taste sensations. Evidence shows that it can take between 10 and 15 times to introduce a new food or flavour and that learning about food is all about familiarity and repetition. So by understanding more about their babies’ facial expressions, parents are likely to feel more confident about introducing new foods. Baby faces and understanding what they mean … But what is the meaning of that face your baby pulls as they try a new food for the first time? What’s your baby really trying to tell you?

Top Tip “Keep trying - if your little one rejects a new food, offer it again in a few days’ time. If they still say no, try again in a few weeks’ time”

“For example, what mums and dads might interpret as a look of shock or disgust, doesn’t necessarily translate as not liking the taste, what’s more likely is that baby is puzzled by the intensity of a new flavour. A surprised expression could be curiosity about the depth of flavour, the chances are they think the flavour is good but it’s very different to what they’ve eaten before – it’s all part of them experiencing and learning new tastes on their weaning journey.” It can be challenging to keep offering new foods and coming up with new and inspiring ideas to tempt little ones, but it’s important as those first tastes during weaning help define a child’s future relationship with food.

Weaning GAGGING Your baby may gag when you introduce solid foods. This is because they’re learning to regulate the amount of food they can chew and swallow at one time. If your baby is gagging, this is what may happen:

WHAT TO DO IF MY BABY IS CHOKING

• Your baby’s eyes may water • They might push their tongue forward (or out of their mouth) • To bring the food forward in their mouth —they might make a    retching movement, or they may vomit

CHOKING Choking can happen with hard foods, bones and small round foods that can easily get stuck in the throat. Remember, you should:

If you think your child is choking and cannot breathe properly:

• Cut small round foods, like grapes and cherry tomatoes, into    small pieces, peel the skin off fruit, vegetables and sausages    (though remember that sausages can be high in salt).

• Shout for help.

• Remove hard pips or stones from fruit, remove bones from meat   or fish.

• Support their chest and chin with one hand and with the heel    of your hand - give five sharp blows between the shoulder blades.

• Avoid hard foods like raw carrot, apple, whole nuts and peanuts.

If this doesn’t dislodge the object Call 999

• Never give them raw jelly cubes, they can get stuck in the throat.

STORING AND REHEATING FOOD Storing If you’re batch cooking, cool the food down (ideally within one to two hours) and then freeze or refrigerate. If you’re keeping it in the fridge – use it within 2 days. With rice, make sure it cools within an hour and then goes straight in the fridge or freezer. Rice kept in the fridge should be eaten within 24 hours – never reheat it more than once.

Defrosting Defrost frozen food thoroughly before reheating. The safest way to do this is in the fridge overnight, or by defrosting it in the microwave (using the defrost setting).

Reheating When reheating food, make sure it’s steaming hot all the way through, then let it cool before giving it to your baby. If you’re using a microwave, give it a good stir to get rid of any hot air pockets – always check the temperature before feeding your baby. Any cooked food should only be reheated once.

TOP TIP If you need to cool food down quickly, put it in an airtight container and run cold water over it. Keep stirring so it cools throughout.

FOODS TO AVOID It’s important to know which foods are safe for your little one. Here’s a list of which ones to avoid and why:

CHRISTMAS BOOKS

• Sugary snacks – sugar can cause tooth decay. You don’t need to add sugar to your baby’s food either.

• Honey – avoid honey until your baby is 12 months old – it contains bacteria that can lead to infant botulism, a serious illness that can make your baby very unwell.

• Salty foods – like bacon, sausages, chips with extra salt, crackers, crisps, ready-meals, takeaways, gravy and meals made with stock cubes. Babies shouldn’t eat salty foods as it isn’t good for their kidneys, there’s no need to add salt to their food either.

• Soft cheeses — can contain a bacteria called listeria, these include:mouldripened soft cheese, such as brie or camembertripened goats’ milk cheese, such as chevre, soft blue veined cheese, such as Roquefort.

• Unpasteurised cheeses – due to the risk of listeria. Check the labels to make sure you’re buying cheese made from pasteurised milkraw shellfish – this can increase the risk of food poisoning. Children should only eat shellfish that has been thoroughly cooked.

• Shark, swordfish or marlin – high levels of mercury in these fish can affect your baby’s growing nervous system.

DRINKS TO AVOID • Fruit juice or smoothies – avoid before 12 months as babies don’t need them. • Squash, fizzy drinks, flavoured milk – even when diluted, for older babies and toddlers, these drinks can fill your child up so they’re not hungry for healthier food. Instead, offer sips of water from a cup with meals. • Cows’ milk – cows’ milk does not have the right balance of nutrients for babies, so should not be given as a drink before 12 months (however, small amounts can be used in cooking) • Follow-on formula, growing up milks and goodnight milks are not suitable for    babies under 6 months.
