Infants and young children spend most of their sleep either in deep sleep or dreaming. So its not surprising that young kids spend most of their sleep being associated with learning and growing

BEDTIME Routines are a go for toddlers

If you haven’t already, now is a great time to establish a bedtime routine for your toddler. When you follow a set pattern every night, your toddler will know what to expect. This will help them feel more relaxed, and able to fall asleep more easily.

WHAT ARE THE BASICS OF A GOOD BEDTIME ROUTINE?

The important thing is that you do the same thing every night, so that your toddler learns to associate particular activities with bedtime.

If you’re not at home, try to follow your routine as much as possible. The familiarity may make it easier for them to settle down in their new surroundings.

Your toddler’s routine should always include spending a little time in their bedroom. This will teach them that their room is a nice place to be, not just where they’re sent at the end of the day.

Once you’ve tucked your toddler in for the night, give them a kiss and leave the room. If they grumble, tell them that you’ll be back to check on them in five minutes. In all likelihood, they’ll be fast asleep by the time you return. If not, do the same thing again until they settle.

DEVELOPMENT

WHAT CAN I INCLUDE IN MY TODDLER’S BEDTIME ROUTINE?

What you include in your toddler’s routine is up to you. Just make sure you choose activities that help calm your toddler, rather than excite them. Here are some ideas for you to try:

Give them a soak

A nice, warm bath is a soothing experience, and getting your toddler clean and dry is a great way to ease them into bedtime.

Get them changed for bed

Change your toddler into a fresh nappy, or encourage them to use the toilet if they’re already potty-trained. Then help them get changed into their pyjamas. Offer them a choice of two pyjamas so that they can exercise some of their growing independence.

Play a quiet game

Having a calm game on the floor of your toddler’s bedroom is a great way to spend some fun time with them before bed. Older toddlers may enjoy simple puzzles or card games, and younger ones are always entertained by peek-a-boo.

Your game doesn’t have to be big or special. It can be as simple as taking turns saying the alphabet or counting to 10. Anything that entertains your toddler without over-stimulating them is fine.

Have a chat

Whether or not your toddler’s talking yet, bedtime is a perfect opportunity to have a quiet chat. Of course, if you have a young toddler, you’ll have to do most of the talking yourself, but they’ll still love getting your full attention.

Talk about everything you’ve both been doing throughout the day, and how it may have made them feel. If your toddler’s old enough, ask them to tell you about the best and worst things that happened to them, as well as anything that’s worrying them. This may help them to work through any anxieties or fears so that they get a better night’s sleep.

Read a bedtime story

Cuddle up for some cosy story time. Your toddler will love spending time with you, and hearing you give all the characters silly voices. It’ll even help them learn new words, and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

Give your toddler a choice of books from a small selection each night. They’ll enjoy getting to have their say. You may end up reading the same few books for week or so, but repetition is a key part of your toddler’s learning. While it may be a tad frustrating for you, it’s great for their development!

Try to give yourself some down time between leaving work and the baby’s arrival. Ideally, you’ll have finished your baby shopping and can concentrate on the important things like sleeping, reading and watching Mad Men – those simple pleasures that are soon to become precious luxuries. Oh and triple checking you’ve packed your hospital bag.

Make the most of your baby nap gap. Forget Facebook and Homes Under The Hammer – use your baby’s nap times to do something constructive. Whether it’s writing that novel, researching youramazing business idea or teaching yourself how to knit, maternity leave is the perfect time to let your creative juices flow.

Spend the day in your PJs Why? Because a) you can and b) you deserve it!

Sing a song

A soothing lullaby is a classic way to help your sleepy toddler drift off. Your voice and your partner’s voice are your toddler’s favourite sounds. You could even record a tune for them to listen to when someone else puts them to bed.

Say goodnight

Your toddler may enjoy going around the room saying goodnight to their favourite toys. Don’t let them take advantage, though. If they insist on saying goodnight to every single stuffed toy in their bedroom, they may just be trying to put off bedtime a little longer.

Bear in mind that anything can occasionally throw your toddler’s routine off for a few nights. Find out when your toddler will be ready to sleep away from home.

WORK OR A FAMILY? OR BOTH?

This is a question Beth Follini from Ticktock Coaching gets a lot. She’s a life coach who helps women decide whether or not they want children. “If work is your passion and you don’t have a strong desire to have a child, do you have to give up your life’s work for motherhood? My job is to show people their choices –it might be difficult but they can make it work.”

Follini asks clients to identify senior female role models in their industry and analyse how they manage career and children. She also cautions against caring too much about what everyone else says or does. Since becoming a mother I know I’ve been guilty of urging friends wavering on the issue of parenthood to go for it – I love it, so they will, right? But doing it before you are ready could cause resentment towards your new lifestyle, partner and baby. “I would never tell people to just do it,” says Follini. “Women can feel overwhelmed by everyone else’s opinion. Listen to your own voice and feel confident in it.”

I had no inkling as to how much becoming a mother would change my life. Four years ago, I had a glamorous senior job on a fashion magazine in London, I travelled extensively, I went to parties with the A-list, I wore Louboutins. Now I have two small children, I work freelance three days a week, and you’re more likely to find me on a bouncy castle in my Converse. My life in 2012 is not better or worse than my life in 2008, it’s just different. You find a way to make motherhood work for you; you get on with it. I didn’t ever get the corner office in New York, but I still visit on work trips. I’m toying with Glastonbury sans enfants next summer, just like the good old days (but I’ll have to go to bed earlier).

My advice? Ditch the pre-baby bucket list. Don’t do it unless you feel ready but don’t ever expect to feel completely ready. And if that thin blue line comes out of the blue?

If you find out, unexpectedly, that you’re pregnant? Take a deep breath, take 100 deep breaths if you need to, and don’t panic. I promise that you’ll make it work, if you want to, like you always do. Your life will change, but you won’t.

Joolz re-introduce

A NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION OF ITS ALREADY MUCH-LOVED AER BUGGY

Joolz, the stroller brand putting parents in control and the planet first, is thrilled to unveil the evolved Aer+. Adapted to further support the modern family whether popping to town or travelling on their first family holiday, the elevated and eco-conscious new design offers the ultimate ride for adventures near or far. Light as a feather (weighing just 6 kilos) with the ability to fold (and unfold) in just one second, one handed. Made from 100% recycled fabrics and now with a number of exciting updates, Joolz is continuing to take strides to ensure the Aer+ is the buggy for families today, and the future.

The evolved design of the Aer+ includes all the features the predecessor is known and loved for, but now features further innovations to make families lives even easier.

Some new and improved features

• Bigger ventilating SPF50 sun hood to provide even more protection

• With a swift adjustment, the ergonomic seat can be brought into a full lie flat position.

• New wheels with LED light* for safety

• Bigger basket (17L)

• Peek-a-boo window on the Aer+ cot

• Improved folding button.

• Unique one-piece fold design enables parents to pack away the pushchair without having to remove the cot - genius!

• More spacious seat

• More advanced harness for well-being and safety.

• Seat liner and backrest will offer more support for upright sitting.

Still fits perfectly in an overhead locker so is ideal for family adventures and city trips, without having to compromise on comfort.. In addition, as the buggy weighs only 6 kilos, it can be easily carried with its very handy buggy strap.

What is truly unique about the Joolz Aer+ is that every element of the design has been created with sustainability in mind. From the fabric of the buggy that is made from recycled PET bottles, the recyclable and reusable packaging and the new and unique 10-year transferable warranty (which means it can be passed to another family in the future), right through to the brand’s promise to plant a tree for every pushchair sold, this is a brand that is helping to build a better world for the next generation to inherit. Every step (and stroll) counts!

SUSTAINABLE STYLE WITH AN AFFORDABLE PRICE TAG:

Inside didofy’s new Stargazer

When you’re expecting a new baby, the list of essentials you need to buy seems never-ending. You want to make sure you’ve got a pram with a carrycot for the first few months, but you also need a stroller (not to mention accessories like a raincover for that unpredictable British weather). Then there’s the car seat and all its necessary adapters. Wouldn’t it be easier if you could just get everything you need in one affordable bundle?

With a passion for quality, practical products that won’t break the bank, didofy has the perfect solution. The all-new Stargazer 11-piece travel system offers all of the above in a great value bundle. With an affordable price tag of just £799, this system boasts high quality, sustainable recycled materials, easy one-handed GravityFold, a collapsible carrycot, and so much more. It’s the perfect solution that’s easy on your pockets and kind to the planet.

LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE GREAT VALUE YOU CAN GET FOR YOUR MONEY…

Over

150 recycled plastic bottles in every Stargazer

To help do their bit for the environment, didofy have used sustainable, traceable materials when designing the Stargazer. Every stroller’s fabric consists of 92 recycled PET bottles, plus 73 in every carrycot, and more still in the design of the Stargazer’s car seat. By

recycling plastic bottles and turning them into quality fabrics, didofy has extended the life of thousands of single-use bottles that would likely have ended up in landfill.

Using modern technology, these PET bottles have been woven into durable, stylish fabrics to give the Stargazer that quality, comfortable feel that’s found in all of didofy’s products.

COLLAPSIBLE CARRYCOT AND ONE-HAND FOLD

From their very first product, didofy has been on a mission to take the hassle out of folding your stroller. Gone are the days when you had to wrestle with your pushchair with bags on your back and a baby in your arms.

The brand’s unique GravityFold technology allows you to easily fold your Stargazer stroller with one hand, letting gravity do the work. Collapse your stroller in either parent or world-facing mode, closing down into a convenient upright position.

The effortless, practical folding doesn’t stop at the stroller - didofy have decided to take it

one step further with the Stargazer. Now, you can enjoy that same compact portability with the system’s collapsible carrycot. In just two clicks, your carrycot can be folded down for easy transportation and storage. What’s more, it has a rocking base and overnight sleep suitability, allowing you to soothe your little one wherever you go.

UNLIMITED ADVENTURES IN COMFORT AND STYLE

Whether you’re tackling city streets or country roads, the Stargazer is fully equipped for any journey. Using the didofy advanced four wheel suspension and all-terrain tyres, you and your family can explore the world without limits. The Stargazer boasts puncture-proof wheels, onehanded steering, flip-flop friendly brake and a surprisingly light weight of just 9.9kg.

While you enjoy the easy manoeuvrability and smooth ride, your little one can also experience complete comfort and safety on your adventures. The waterproof hood has builtin ventilation and UPF 50, keeping your child safe whatever the weather. They can sit back and enjoy the multi-position reclining backrest and adjustable footrest for maximum comfort, as well as a five-point harness with easy-click magnetic buckle to keep them safe and secure.

The didofy Stargazer is available as part of an 11-piece bundle at just £799, or as individual products. You can find it online at didofy.com, or in retailers nationwide. Available in black, green or grey.

OLD WIVES’ TALES FOR PREDICTING GENDER

Trying to predict your baby’s gender? From Chinese Gender charts to decoding your cravings, these old wives tales reveal if you’re having a boy or a girl.

“So, are you having a boy or a girl?” Every pregnant woman has been asked this questionseveral times. Even if you’re choosing to not find out the sex of your baby before your little one arrives, it sure is fun to guess, right? That’s why we’ve put together this list of old wives’ tales for predicting the gender. (Remember: There’s no actual science backing up any of these. Plus, the only thing gender tells us is what genitals our kids have, not how they will eventually identify. So it’s really just for fun!)

1. SWEET VERSUS SALTY CRAVINGS

If you find yourself craving all things sweet, that’s a sign you’re having a girl. Cravings for salty or even protein-rich foods mean it might be a boy. (And if you’re craving everything? Well, that just means you’re pregnant.)

2. THE GARLIC TEST

Put this one to the test at your own—and your partner’s—risk! If you’re able to eat a lot of garlic but not smell like it, apparently that means you’re carrying a girl.

3. MORNING SICKNESS

Unfortunately, this early pregnancy symptom doesn’t tend to discriminate. But if you’re suffering from excessive nausea and morning sickness, it’s said you could be having a girl.

4. PREGNANCY GLOW, OR NO

If your complexion is bright and your hair resembles that of a Pantene commercial, you could be having a boy. If that much-talkedabout “pregnancy glow” is MIA and you’re breaking out, it may just mean you’ve got a girl growing. (It’s said little girls steal Mum’s good looks.)

5. PARTNER’S WEIGHT GAIN

As this old wives’ tale goes, if your partner is gaining weight alongside you (also known as “sympathy weight”), that could be a sign that you’re carrying a girl. (Who wants to go to the gym when there’s nesting to be done?)

20 l SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 l project-baby.co.uk
PREGNANCY 12

6. MOODY VERSUS MELLOW

If you’re feeling more moody than mellow, you might be having a girl. If you’re more chilled out, legend has it you should get ready for a boy.

7. THE EYE TEST

Look in the mirror for about a minute. If your pupils are dilating, it means you’re having a boy.

8. CARRYING HIGH VERSUS LOW

According to pregnancy lore, carrying high means you’re having a girl, while carrying low means it’s a boy.

9. THE RING TEST

Tie a ring on a string and hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circular motion, you could be having a girl, but if it’s swinging side to side, it means you’re having a boy.

10. HEART RATE

During your next ultrasound, pay attention to baby’s heart rate. If that little ticker is beating faster than 140 beats per minute, get ready for a girl.

11. CHINESE GENDER CHART

Place one finger on the age you were when you conceived and another finger on the month of conception. Where your fingers meet in the middle will tell you if you’re expecting a little boy or girl. Are you ready to try this fun chart out? Check out our website for the chart.

12. BLOOD PRESSURE BEFORE YOU CONCEIVE

This one is a little more tricky to do. A study found that the higher a woman’s blood pressure is 26 weeks before she conceived, the more likely she is to have a boy. So if you had a doctor’s appointment before you started trying to get pregnant, look back and see what your blood pressure was—it could be the very scientific clue to whether you’re having a little dude or dudette.

So, based on these old wives’ tales, do you think you’re having a boy or a girl?

Ramzi’s Ultrasound Method

The Ramzi ultrasound method claims that you can determine fetal sex based on the side of the uterus the placenta lies on.

If the placenta is on the left, the method claims it means the fetus is female. If it’s on the right, it supposedly means male.

TOP TIPS FOR CONCEIVING A BOY

1. Time sex to coincide with the day of ovulation (no earlier than 24 hours before you are about to ovulate).

2. Deep penetrative sex is preferable.

3. It helps if the woman orgasms.

4. Have an energy drink, a cup of coffee or some chocolate before having sex.

The Perfect Gamily Getaway

HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY YET?

Just a 5-minute drive from Porto Cristo, a lazy fishing village with a relaxing vibe, perfect if you want to retreat and get away from it all, but still within easy reach of the more lively resort of Cala Millor which is only a short taxi ride away.

We arrived at Cala Mandia at around midday on a busy day in August at the heart of the school holidays. We were welcomed into the hotel and very quickly we were given all the relevant information regarding our stay and escorted to our room.

Myself and my husband along with our 4 year old son and our one year old baby were staying in a deluxe room which I could not fault, we had a massive bed, large terrace balcony and the bathroom was spacious and clean, Henry had his own lounge area which doubled as his bedroom. We were also perfectly positioned within the resort, just above the main pool with a view of the sea.

All rooms are at least 40 square meters and feature a separate enclosed bathroom area, as well as small living area.

The resort is separated into three sections:

Area A, which houses the main pools, the main dinning areas, the spa, one of the main evening entertainment areas as well as a gorgeous adult only pool, bar and restaurant for when you need to spend a few hours away from the kids.

Area B, consists of a nice pool, a tapas restaurant and the outdoor stage for more live evening entertainment.

Area C, home to the water/splash park, large pool, a grill restaurant, an outdoor playground, all the sports facilities which include a basketball court, tennis courts and to Quincy’s delight a small football pitch.

HOLIDAY REVIEW
Nestled on the east coast of beautiful Majorca, right next to a white-sand cove beach, surrounded by palms, pine trees and lawns is Insotel Cala Mandia Resort.

We spent the majority of our time in Area A, finding the same spot next to the main pool almost every day. The pool was busy without being too busy and the constant supply of chocolate ice creams kept my husband and son very happy in the blistering heat. Various activities were put on throughout the day in and around the pool including two pool aerobics sessions and a water polo match which became quite competitive to say the least.

Bikes can be hired from the hotel at a low cost.

Just a short walk down a picturess walkway from the resort is one of two cove beaches which are very close to each other. We often took a stroll down here and spent one of our days at the beach where we were able to hire sun beds and sip cocktails from the beach bar whilst reading a good book. The sea was quite choppy on this particular day but the water was still crystal clear and lifeguards were keeping a watchful eye.

If you fancied a day out of the resort, one of the islands top attractionsthe Caves of Drach is a short taxi drive away.

Back at the resort the food choices were varied and delicious, breakfast and lunch had everything you would expect including a variety of healthy options. We are a family of fussy eaters however for dinner we always found something we liked. We could choose one evening meal at the tapas restaurant, one at the Grill restaurant and one at the adults only restaurant which we took full advantage of on an evening when the boys were busy being entertained at a club, the rest of the week we ate at the main buffet style restaurant which was more than satisfactory. From time to time the hotel staff gave out sangria or champagne cocktails as guests entered the restaurants.

There was also a snack bar during the day which offered a good variety of food and ice creams. The bar was brilliant and the staff were very friendly.

From 7pm-8pm every evening there was a disco for the little ones, all the children get involved and the staff were incredible with them. This did lead perfectly into the main entertainment which usually started at about 9pm in one of the main entertainment areas. With the boys asleep in their pushchairs the shows were some of the best we have ever seen at a family resort and we found it was very easy to make new friends.

project-baby.co.uk l SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 l 25 HOLIDAY REVIEW

Friends of ours also recently stayed at Cala Mandia with a 5 and 8 year old and found the resort equally as good. They spent most of their time at the splash park as well as making full use of all the kids clubs which allowed them a good few hours each day to relax at the adults only pool.

All in all Cala Mandia was an excellent choice of holiday, it is a family friendly resort but also caters for adult only groups. One of the stand out reasons we enjoyed ourselves so much was the staff, not only the management team who were excellent but the entertainment staff who were constantly trying to get us involved with activities and we instantly found ourselves on first name terms with most of them. The resort was clean, the food was excellent and there was a constant flow of activities for children of all ages.

Summary

THE JOURNEY

A two hour flight from the UK means Majorca will always be a great option for families, however Cala Mandia is on the other side of the island from the airport so the transfer will take at least an hour.

THE LOCATION

The location around the main hotel is very nice and has a supermarket, shops and a few bars. Quiet fishing village Porto Christo is just 4km away. The beach is a very short distance from the hotel and is very good.

THE HOTEL

Lovely and clean in a beautiful setting. Many swimming pools to choose from without the normal rush in the mornings for sunbeds.

THE ROOMS

All rooms are at least 40 square meters and feature a separate enclosed bathroom area, as well as a small living area. They also come with a safe.

FOOD & FACILITIES

At least 5 restaurants each with a great variety of food to pick from.

ENTERTAINMENT

Daily clubs for all ages, fitness and games around the pools throughout the day and a great choice of live entertainment each night.

SKI HOLIDAYS

SNOWSURE GLACIER SKIING

Off the slopes there’s a really lively atmosphere and après ski scene spread across the 2km long main street. There’s a great selection of bars to choose between, including some friendly pubs, sports bars, clubs and a couple of quiet, more traditional après venues. There are also plenty of restaurants to whet your appetite, including some simple pub food and crêperies, and we always recommend trying out the traditional Savoyard cuisine.

BOHINJ SKI HOLIDAYS

This collection of small villages that surround the beautiful Lake Bohinj are dominated by the magnificent Julian Alps, affording some spectacular scenery. The main ski area of Vogel overlooks the the lake itself, offering a wonderful experience for all winter activities. The majority of runs are ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers. A superb ski school is on hand for those who are new to the sport, or just want to improve their skills.

ST JOHANNSCHNEEWINKEL

With many north-facing slopes, the resort boasts a good snow record and is an excellent choice for groups of mixed ability skiers. The Schneewinkel area pass - covering over 117km of slopesopens up a wealth of other possibilities and encompasses the ski areas of Waidring and Steinplatte, all linked by local bus services.

THINGS WOMEN WANT TO KNOW ABOUT PREGNANCY AND BIRTH

Pregnancy may be an exciting time but it’s also a time of uncertainty and many questions. Here, Lesley Bland, a registered midwife at My Expert Midwife answers questions women commonly ask their midwives.

1. CAN I HAVE SEX?

There is no medical reason not to have sex during your pregnancy, unless you have been advised not to by your Midwife or Doctor. Penetrative sex will not hurt your baby or cause your waters to break. Your libido (sex drive) may increase or decrease during pregnancy and both changes are normal. Hormones, tiredness, changes in body image or physical symptoms can affect how we feel about ourselves and towards our partner. Some women report feeling extremely sexual and attractive during their pregnancy, whilst others couldn’t think of anything worse. As long as it is consensual, you don’t feel uncomfortable or in pain and there is no medical reason you should abstain, there’s no reason not to indulge. However, if you experience any pain or bleeding after sex do contact your midwife or maternity triage.

2. WHY AM I SO HAIRY?

There are two main reasons for this: a sharp rise in the levels of the hormone oestrogen and the fact that you have reduced hair fall during pregnancy. The latter often means luscious locks on your head and, yes, more ‘fuzz’ on your body. Hair fall resumes a few months after your baby’s birth, translating into a less ‘hairy belly’ and, sadly, a less thick head of hair.

3. IS IT NORMAL TO LEAK URINE?

Leaking urine during pregnancy is common. Not only does your bladder have to contend with the increasing weight of the womb and your baby tap dancing away on it, but increased hormone levels in pregnancy can relax the smooth muscle of the bladder, making it less efficient at holding larger

amounts of urine. A weakened pelvic floor (the mesh of muscles that support your pelvic organs) will not help matters. You can prevent or minimise leakage by regularly emptying your bladder and toning your pelvic floor with pelvic floor exercises.

4. WHY AM I SO GASSY DURING PREGNANCY, IT’S EM BARRASSING?

Levels of the hormone progesterone increase during pregnancy, causing tissues to relax. The digestive system is affected by this rise in progesterone, which tends to cause a slowing down in the digestion of food and in the movement of your bowels, leading to a build-up of gas, as well as constipation. The stomach is also reduced in size as the pregnancy progresses, meaning larger portions of food sit in it for longer, producing gas and feelings of indigestion.

PREGNANCY

5. I GET SHOOTING PAINS INTO MY VAGINA, SHOULD I WORRY?

Also known as ‘lightning crotch’ (!), shooting pains in your pelvic area can be quite common and can increase as your pregnancy progresses. These are usually caused by pressure on the nerve complex that connects your womb, cervix, and vagina or by stretching of the broad ligament, which attaches your womb to your groin area. Your own or your baby’s movement can set off this spasm-like pains, which are sharp and short-lasting. Any longer lasting pain, or if accompanied by other symptoms, should be investigated.

6. WHAT’S ALL THAT DISCHARGE?

Vaginal discharge does change in pregnancy and tends to increase as you reach term. In pregnancy, this discharge is known as leukorrhea and it helps to keep your vagina

clean by washing away unwanted bacteria and pathogens, protecting your unborn baby from infection. It also helps to maintain a balanced pH and acts as a lubricant in labour. Any vaginal discharge that has an odd or offensive odour, is green or yellow in colour, looks abnormal to you or is accompanied by burning, itching or pain (in your vagina or lower abdomen), should be looked at by your midwife or doctor, who may take swabs with your consent.

7. NOW THAT I AM PREGNANT I HAVE BEEN TOLD I NEED TO EAT FOR TWO! IS THAT RIGHT?

No not at all in fact you only need an extra 200 calories per day during the third trimester of your pregnancy; 200 extra calories equates to just 2 slices of wholemeal toast with spread per day. Healthy eating during pregnancy is important to ensure you provide both your body and growing baby with all the beneficial nutrients they need, and to avoid gaining too much weight which can increase your risk of complications such as raised blood pressure and gestational diabetes.

8. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF BABY ARRIVING ON HIS/ HER DUE DATE?

Approximately 4% babies arrive on their estimated due date (EDD) meaning the vast majority are either born earlier or later. A full-term pregnancy is classed as between 37 completed weeks and 42 completed weeks of pregnancy with approximately 90% of babies being born during this window. Timing of delivery can vary depending on different factors; for example, first babies are often born later than subsequent babies, multiple pregnancies often birth before singleton pregnancies, and if the health and wellbeing of mum and/or baby is declining or at risk, the birth date may be brought forward.

9. I AM NOT GLOWING IN FACT I AM NOT ENJOYING PREGNANCY AT ALL. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

There is nothing wrong with not enjoying pregnancy. Stresses can increase massively during pregnancy, you may experience more physical and mental pressures and it may have negative impacts on close relationships. Hormones are playing havoc, your body is changing shape, you are probably tired, may be nauseous or sick and are worrying about

whether you can look after a newborn. Some women sail through pregnancy feeling better than ever, glowing with great skin and luscious hair but others just find it tough. It is normal to have periods of anxiety and stress but if these feelings persist or you start to feel low in mood you may have antenatal depression and we advise talking to your midwife or GP.

10. I AM WORRIED ABOUT LABOUR AND FEEL SO UNPREPARED!

Said every pregnant woman forever!! But being prepared and knowledgeable about what to expect is invaluable and is our number one recommendation. The value of good quality antenatal education cannot be underestimated. Classes may be face-to-face, online or on-demand depending on what suits you best, but you should consider including your birth partner as they will likely have as many fears and concerns about what is to come as you do. Having the opportunity to learn about breathing techniques, pain relief, induction of labour (40% of women will have an induction), Caesarean section (approximately 25% of babies are born by C-section in UK), and even emergencies will give you knowledge that should help you to cope whatever labour brings, and to be able to make fully informed decisions should ‘Plan A’ not work out.

3 BEDTIME STRUGGLES with your Toddler

Why are bedtimes with my toddler such a struggle?

A toddler who refuses to go to sleep will challenge the patience of even the most serene parent. After a busy day, you won’t be alone if you reach a point where the one thing you want most in the world is for your child to go to bed. She, meanwhile, may have other ideas. Although this is normal toddler behaviour, it can still be incredibly frustrating and disheartening.

These are some of the common reasons why your toddler might find bedtimes difficult:

Being confused about her bedtime routine, needing you to be with her when she falls asleep and being unable to soothe herself going through a stage where she is developing lots of new skills and abilities a developing imagination, which can lead to worries and fears testing out her own independence wanting to spend more time with you feeling unsafe without you and being afraid you won’t come back (separation anxiety) being over-stimulated or having had caffeine or screen time too close to bedtime.

Of course, knowing what the problem may be doesn’t make it any easier when your toddler’s running around at 10pm for the fourth night running!

However, if you can create a consistent routine, and give your toddler some independence without her taking control, you should find that things get easier. You’ll find more detailed advice about common bedtime issues below. You may need to work at bedtime for a little while before you see a change. But your hard work will certainly pay off when you finally get that early night you’re desperate for!

In the meantime, make sure you take care of yourself. Share out bedtime duties with your partner, or recruit family members to pitch in if needs be. If that’s not possible, make sure your toddler is safe and go to a separate room if everything gets too much. There’s no harm in escaping the chaos for a few minutes to take some deep breaths.

Remember that your toddler’s behaviour isn’t a reflection on you! The key to changing her behaviour is to keep calm, consistent and firm.

HOW CAN I ENCOURAGE MY TODDLER TO FALL ASLEEP WITHOUT ME THERE?

It will help your toddler to feel more comfortable about bedtime if she knows what to expect, and what’s expected of her.

The best way to do this is to establish and maintain a consistent calm bedtime routine. A regular routine helps her to know that bedtime is coming, and that structure helps her to feel safe and more relaxed. You could give her a warm bath, read her a story and then put her into bed while she’s still awake.

To help your little one get used to going to sleep without you in the room, when she’s going to bed or when she wakes at night, you can use a routine recommended by the NHS.

30 l SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 l project-baby.co.uk
DEVELOPMENT

Put her to bed when she’s sleepy, but awake and kiss her goodnight. Promise to go back in a few moments to give her another kiss. Return almost immediately to give a kiss.

Take a few steps towards the bedroom door, then go back straightaway to give her a kiss. Promise to return in a few moments to give her another kiss.

Put something away or do something in her room then give her a kiss. As long as she stays in bed, keep going back to give more kisses. Do something outside her room and return to give kisses.

If she gets out of bed, say: “Back into bed and I’ll give you a kiss”. Keep going back often to give kisses until she’s asleep.

When you first start doing this routine, it can take a while for her to settle and sleep. If you keep going it should take less and less time each night for her to nod off. If she’s in a cot and you can’t reach her to give a kiss you can stroke or gently pat her instead.

HOW CAN I STOP MY TODDLER STALLING AT BEDTIME?

Stalling at bedtime is a classic toddler tactic. By asking for yet another glass of water, your toddler may just be trying to negotiate a little extra time with you.

It’s part of testing out her growing independence.

Try and be firm and calm and stick to the same bedtime every night so that your toddler knows where she stands. When you start a new routine make sure you pick a good time for you, when you feel confident you can stick to it and you have plenty of time. It’s likely to get worse before it gets better, but that’s when you know it’s working!

Try to anticipate her requests and make them part of her usual nightly routine. Put a glass of water on her bedside table, change her nappy or take her to the toilet, and give her plenty of hugs and kisses before leaving the room.

Some parents use a bedtime pass. This is when you let your toddler have one request each night, so she feels that she has some control over the situation. If you suspect that she’s still trying to drag things out after that, be firm with her.Tell her it’s time for bed and there’ll be plenty of time to finish her game or read another story tomorrow.

MY TODDLER WANTS TO GET HER OWN WAY AT BEDTIME. WHAT CAN I DO?

Your toddler is probably just testing out her growing independence. As she starts to realise that she’s her own person, she may want to prove this by using her new favourite word, “no”.

Offering your toddler a few basic choices at bedtime will let her explore her independence but without letting her take complete control. For example, you could ask her to decide what story she’d like to hear, or whether she wants to wear the blue or the green pyjamas.

Only give your toddler two alternatives, and only offer options that you’re happy with. If you ask who she wants to do bath time, she could well say someone who isn’t there! Instead, ask ‘Do you want Mummy or Daddy to do bath time?’ She still gets to make the choice, but either will work and the end result will be what you want.

It can be hard to say no when your toddler cries or pleads for an exception to the going-to-bed rule. But calmly and firmly standing your ground will help her to learn good habits, and the clear structure and rules you give her will help her to feel safe and secure. If you say yes to her request she may feel like she’s on shaky ground, or she’ll try the same thing again and again.

If you’re frustrated, try not to engage in a power struggle. Do your best to ignore your toddler’s tantrums too. Toddlers crave your attention, so giving her lots of attention, even if you’re displeased or angry, is likely to make her want to do it again. And again!

Instead, stay close by and talk to her calmly and quietly, but insist that when it’s bedtime, it’s time for bed.

Baby Games

Ramp up your repertoire with these games.

In the early weeks, enjoying your newborn consists mostly of gazing at her while she sleeps or nurses (since that’s what she spends almost all of her time doing!). But before long, she becomes more wakeful and interested in the world around her and you’ve got some entertaining to do. “Babies need a variety of experiences,” explains Jan Blaxall, an early years specialist and trainer in London, Ont. “And the key ingredient in their play is one-on-one attention from you.” Here are some fun ideas to get you started with baby games.

1. SPLISH, SPLASH

Water has such a joyful, relaxing effect on children - feel free to take advantage any time of the day. Your baby can go right in the tub (with you, if you’d like!) as you use your hands, sponges and funnels to splash water on different parts of his body. When your baby can sit up, spread a vinyl tablecloth on the floor and set out a shallow pan of water with lots of cups, sponges, spoons and maybe his own baby to wash.

2. SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL

Fill empty water bottles with interesting things - rice, buttons, Jell-O, water mixed with liquid soap, food colouring or oil. Crawlers will love chasing after a two-litre pop bottle half-filled with coloured water, as it rolls along the floor.

3. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Some days it may seem like a lot of effort just to get outside, but don’t underestimate the positive effect a little fresh air has on your baby and you. “When you get out of the house, you stop thinking about all the jobs that need to be done, and become more attuned to your baby,” Blaxall says. Lift your baby out of the stroller, pull a leaf off a tree and let him feel it. Put his hand on the tree trunk. If the area is clean, put him on the grass and let him feel around. Doing this gives babies a sense of what their world is made of, instead of just what they see, Blaxall explains.

4. ROCK AND ROLL

Your big exercise ball doesn’t have to collect dust until you get back into workout mode. Use the ball for all your baby’s stages - it’s a soft, bouncy place for you to sit while holding her (you get a little light ab work at the same time). Or use the ball for your baby’s tummy time. Hold her securely on top of the ball with both your hands and roll her very slightly in different directions. Once your baby’s on the move, she’ll love pushing this huge ball around on the floor and chasing after it.

As soon as possible, let your child communicate. As soon as a child can communicate, I like to talk to them, so do not jump in and answer questions for them. Not only am I learning about them; I am also listening for any language difficulties, temperament issues like shyness or anxiety, and also any concerns they may have themselves. I learn a lot from speaking with the child directly.

34 l SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 l project-baby.co.uk
DEVELOPMENT

When to take a break, you want to excite babies enough with baby games to rev their engines, but not overwhelm them - so it’s important to recognise the cues that they’re not keen on your game of choice, or have had enough. “Babies who are overstimulated either shut their eyes or look away,” Your baby will resort to crying if you miss that important sign. The key is to be fully engaged in the play, making lots of eye contact so you’re aware of your baby’s changing reactions.

5. PEEKABOO 2.0

Covering your face with your hands, then letting go with an enthusiastic “Peekaboo!” will entertain baby well into her toddler years. Babies love to be surprised as they learn that things they can’t see still exist, so shake up your baby games by ducking down and reappearing with a hat on, or a funny face. Cover a toy with a blanket and ask your baby, “Where’d it go?” Crawlers will adore early games of hide-and-seek, with you popping out from unexpected places as they explore hallways and bedrooms.

6. HIGH (CHAIR) ART

Once your baby can sit comfortably in her high chair, try placing safe, edible play materials on her tray (not that she should eat them, but if some gets in her mouth, it’s OK!). Let her explore homemade fingerpaint, or playdough made with ingredients from your cupboard, or simply put blobs of thick pudding or Jell-O on the tray so she can slide her hands around in mess-making bliss.

7. TUESDAY A.M. DANCE PARTY

Who says that babies only need lullabies and Mozart? Shake up your musical menu and have a little dance party à deux. “Different beats, different jargon, different flavours of music all stimulate different parts of the brain,” as well as helping your baby develop language and social skills, Blaxall explains. Besides, it’s fun! And whether it’s a rattle or a margarine tub-turned-drum, have instruments on hand so you can both take active roles in the fun.

8. UNDER COVER

Fort fun starts young! Put a big blanket over a table and sit underneath with your young baby on your lap and a few special toys for a new perspective on the world. Roll a ball out of your fort, and then find out where it went. “Even young babies can’t just sit all the time,” Blaxall says. “Change up their position - on their tummy, upright in your arms, on your lap, over your shoulder, facing outward.” As your child grows, let him crawl up on piles of pillows, and create paths and tunnels with big boxes and couch cushions.it.

TO MAKE THE FUN EVEN MORE MEANINGFUL FOR YOUR LITTLE ONE:

Show her you’re impressed

Your baby reaches for the toy you’re holding slightly above her. She swings her fist, grabs for it and - hurray! - she makes contact. Naturally, you lavish her with praise. And new research shows that your enthusiasm is doing more than just bringing a smile to her face. “Babies need that social cheering section, people noticing and getting excited about what they’re doing. It’s wiring the brain for both relationships and learning,” Blaxall says.

Take turns

Whether it’s shaking a rattle (try doing it fast one time, slow the next) or talking about your day, give your child time to respond or imitate

the action back to you. By doing so, you’re creating the sense of a meaningful partnership, according to Blaxall, where the child gets to be the leader and the follower.

Mix it up

“The best baby activities are multidimensional,” explains Blaxall.

“Engage lots of senses - play music and have interesting things to touch and explore, and combine that with movement and with language.”

When to take a break

You want to excite babies enough with baby games to rev their engines, but not overwhelm them - so it’s important to recognize the cues that they’re not keen on your game of choice, or have had enough. “Babies who are overstimulated either shut their eyes or look away,” says Blaxall. Your baby will resort to crying if you miss that important sign. The key is to be fully engaged in the play, making lots of eye contact so you’re aware of your baby’s changing reactions.

Axkid’s essential guide to ensuring your child is safe in the car through birth and beyond

One of your first big purchases as a new parent is your baby’s car seat, but how do you know which one to buy? Many of us wonder which seats are best for which age, when to turn forward-facing, how to know that the car seat is secure, plus so many more questions.

To help put your mind at ease (and keep your little one safe), Swedish specialist Axkid has put together this essential guide. Having just this month launched three new car seats - Minikid 4, Spinkid and Nextkid - Axkid is well-versed in the different needs of growing children, and how best to support them in the car.

THE FRAGILE FIRST YEARS

When your child is first born, they’re incredibly delicate and unable to hold up their head on their own. In those crucial first few years, keeping baby’s head safe and supported in a car seat is vital. In fact, at 1 year old your baby’s head actually makes up about 25% of their entire body weight! This is why the law in the UK insists that you keep your child in a rear-facing car seat until at least 15 months old (but preferably longer). By facing the rear of the car, in the event of a crash their head will go back into the headrest, instead of being thrown forwards.

When choosing a car seat for your baby, look for something with maximum protection and added support. You may also want to opt for a rotating seat to make it easier to move your baby in and out of the car. Axkid recently released the Spinkid 180 degree car seat, which has been made using advanced Swedish technology to keep your little one as safe as possible. It comes with an adaptable baby cushion, and reclines up to 42 degrees, offering ultimate protection for newborns.

WHEN TO TURN FORWARD-FACING

Turning your child’s car seat around feels like a huge milestone for most parents, like when they eat their first solid food or sit up unaided for the first time. However, despite what UK laws say, it’s actually safer to keep your child rear-facing for longer. The Spinkid will continue to support your child rear-facing all the way up to 4 years - the age at which most Swedish parents will switch to forward-facing.

With their wide range of car seats, Axkid actually offers solutions that can keep your child safer for even longer. The new Minikid 4, for example, supports rear-facing up to 7 years old. This has been proven to offer children up to 5 times more protection in the event of a crash, and is just as (if not more) comfortable for your growing child. The Minikid’s extra 30cm of leg space and adjustable headrest keep your little one safe and supported as they grow, without the need to turn the car seat around.

PRESCHOOL AND BEYOND

Around 6 or 7 years old, it’s finally time to mark that milestone and switch to a forward-facing car seat. At this age, it’s important that your car seat has a high enough back and an adjustable headrest to ensure your child’s comfort and safety. Check your car seat’s height and weight limits to ensure it can support your little one - anything below or above these limits can seriously impact the safety of the seat in the event of a collision.

The third of Axkid’s most recent launches, Nextkid, provides continued support from 100 - 150cm (approx. 4 - 12 years). As a high back booster, the seat encourages the correct seating position to best protect their head and neck, with adjustable side wings and headrest to adapt to your growing child. A car seat like Nextkid can then keep your child safe and protected for the rest of their childhood, right up until the point that they no longer need a car seat at all!

To explore Axkid’s wide range of car seats, including its three new launches, you can go to www.axkid.com/uk, or visit one of their retailers.

MAM’s First carbon neutral soother!

We know parents want the best for their babies and the planet they grow up on, and here at MAM, we do too. That’s why, after years of research, we’ve developed the MAM Original Pure, our first carbon neutral soother.

Launching at The Baby Show, Excel London, the MAM Original Pure Soother is made from bio-renewable materials. The soother button, shield, and steriliser box of the MAM Original Pure are all made from ISCC PLUS certified Circular PP, a more sustainable alternative to current fossil-based soother plastics. Circular PP guarantees the safety and superior product quality you would expect from a MAM product, whilst being kinder to the environment.

The MAM Original Pure Soother has all the same great features as the much-loved MAM Original Soother - including the SkinSoft™ Silicone teat which is easily accepted by 94%* of babies, and the flat, symmetrical shape developed with dentists to support healthy dental development. Available in a range of nature inspired matt colours and designs, the MAM Original Pure Soothers help to provide parents with an easy sustainable switch.

We have taken steps to reduce the CO emissions of the MAM Original Pure. With the help of sustainability consultants Denkstatt GmbH, we calculated the CO₂ emissions from cradle-to-customer and all the way to the

end-of-life of the product. Next, we reduced as much CO₂ as possible by taking actions to cut carbon emissions across the whole supply chain from switching to a new bio-renewable material, to implementing numerous energyefficiency measures during production, and coming up with clever ways to help parents cut down on their own CO during usage. Finally, we have compensated for the unavoidable CO emissions, by supporting gold standard climate protection projects.

At MAM we have also pledged to reduce our carbon footprint for all consumer packaging by 40% by 2025, with almost all packaging being recyclable, and the cardboard and paper contents being FSC certified. To further cut down on wasteful packaging, MAM soothers come packed in a handy self-sterilising box. Allowing the soothers to be sterilised in as little as 3 minutes in the microwave, without the need of a separate steriliser. Just add 25mls of water, and heat in the microwave for 3 minutes – it’s that easy! Using this selfsterilising method can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 77%** compared to other sterilising methods.

Our MAM Original Pure Soothers are also available as a night version. The button on these soothers’ glows in the dark, helping parents to locate them at night time, without disturbing their little one.

The MAM Pure Soother range is available across 4 different age groups:

• 0-2 months

• 2-6 months

• 6+ months

• 16+ months

BRAIN HEALTH FOR YOUR BABY

Promoting baby’s brain health in pregnancy and after birth is essential for their overall wellbeing. The brain is the most vital organ in your baby. During pregnancy and in early childhood, there is rapid growth of the brain which produces up to 250,000 nerve cells per minute.

The most rapid growth occurs during the third trimester and in the first year of life. Babies are born with more than 100 billion nerve cells which regenerate and reform as the baby learns new things. At birth the average baby’s brain is a quarter of an adult size and doubles in size in the first year. It is 90% grown by the age of 5.

There are many things you can do to help your baby to build great nerve networks from positive memories, interactions and diet. These all contribute to building healthy pathways for creating thoughts, processing abilities and social interactions. These are described as cognitive skills which include

1. Memory processing speeds

2. Attention

3. Emotional control

4. Language

5. Q

6. Creativity

7. Social skills

8. Non verbal communication.

So cognitive development is not just about achieving at school but also happiness and creativity.

So what nutrition is important for brain health?

FOLIC ACID

This is also known as vitamin B9. This has been shown to halve the risk of autism through a protective mechanism against environmental and detoxification effects. It is also well known to reduce the chance of spinal defects such as spina bifida. Around 400mcg is needed per day in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

CHOLINE

This is another B vitamin which is critical for brain growth and health. It is vital for preventing birth defects and acts like folate in detoxification reactions. A deficiency of either choline or folate will compromise the other.

It has another critical action in providing the building blocks for new brain cells. A new baby thus needs a constant supply. In fact babies have up to a 7 times higher levels than adults when they are born. Unfortunately between 55-75% of western populations have been found to be deficient and it is thus recommended to have a supplement of at least 450 mg per day by health authorities. The minimum recommended in breastfeeding is 550 mg per day. Unfortunately many prenatal do not contain the required amount so you may consider taking a stand alone supplement of choline.

OMEGA 3

Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are important for brain development and function. During pregnancy, omega-3 fatty acids can have several potential benefits for the developing baby’s brain. Here are some of the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for brain health in pregnancy:

Improved cognitive development: Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA, are critical for the development of the brain and nervous system. Several studies have found that maternal consumption of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy is associated with improved cognitive development in infants and young children. For example, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials published in the journal Paediatrics in 2018 found that prenatal supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids was associated with improved cognitive outcomes in children up to four years of age.

We have devised a fantastic range of supplements to meet all these needs. Designed by doctors including a paediatrician to optimise the brain health of your baby. For more advice and tips please follow us on Instagram or Facebook. Or check our our blog at www.purermama.co.uk

Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

What can you do to solve your sleep problems during pregnancy? Here are some tried-and-true suggestions

• Avoid caffeine (in all its forms, so put that chocolate bar down) after noon.

• Get your eight glasses of water (or other fluids), but taper off at night.

• Drink if you’re thirsty, but don’t down a 16-ounce water bottle right before bedtime.

• Exercise regularly - during the day or early evening. A daily workout will help you sleep better, but if it comes too close to bedtime, it could actually sabotage sleep (exercise) is energising)

• Take a warm bath just before bed. The soothing and relaxing effects of the bath should help you summon the sandman sooner.

• Make love, if you’re in the mood. Or at least ask your man for a massage - both of which can relax you.

• Have a light snack before hitting the hay to stave off midnight hunger pangs. Include protein and a complex carb (think cheese and a whole-grain muffin), as well as some warm milk (it really works!) or decaffeinated tea. Besides the duh (avoid caffeine, again in all its

forms - sorry, no chocolate with the warm milk), stay away from sugar, which will give you an energy boost when you least want one, and then leave your blood sugar levels wobbly during the night (yet another strike against chocolate).

• Crack a window - as long as the weather’s comfortable (which for a pregnant woman means anything from 65 degrees on down-way down). The fresh air can be soporific. If the weather’s not cooperative, keep the room comfortably (for you, not your spouse) chilled. Remember, your heat’s up, the thermostat’s should be down.

• Try some relaxation exercises - visualisation, deep breathing, meditation, or even yoga or chanting before hitting the sack. And actually, counting sheep can work the same way - the monotony of watching those little guys jump over the fence can be truly relaxing (unless you associate them with insomnia).

• Leave a night-light on in the bathroom - switching on the overhead is way too much of a wakeup call and will make it much harder to fall back asleep.

ADVERTISMENT

In our daughter Rowan’s first year, my husband and I repeated this scenario more times than I’d like to admit: Rowan would skip her nap during an exciting visit with Grandma and Grandpa, and we would leave shortly after dinner, smugly confident that we’d all have an early bedtime. Then, barely out of the driveway, I would sense quiet-too quiet-and turn around to see her napping away in the car seat. I’d gasp, my husband would curse softly, and we’d hotly argue over what to do next: Wake her up to endure a howling baby for nearly two hours while we drove home, or let her nap now, only to have a refreshed and playful baby who might stay up all night when we got home?

WHEN YOUR BABY HASN’T EATEN IN A COUPLE OF HOURS

You should wake up your newborn to ensure she’s feeding every few hours, says Tracey Bridger, a paediatric endocrinologist in St. John’s. Regular feedings are important, at least until your baby has regained her birth weight. According to paediatric sleep specialist and University of Toronto associate professor Robyn Stremler, waking a newborn from long stretches in the daytime to feed also signals to them to be more active in the day, which in turn helps shift those long stretches of sleep to nighttime.

YES! SOMETIMES IT’S OK TO WAKE A BABY FROM A NAP

You struggle so much to get your baby to sleep, but it turns out there are some cases where it’s best to wake them.

Every parent has heard the cautions about waking a sleeping baby, but is it ever better to cut a snooze short? We asked the experts about the following scenarios.

But once your baby is a healthy weight and is feeding, peeing and pooping regularlygenerally after the first couple of weeks-you can rest assured she can get that sleep and wake up to eat later, say Bridger. Because newborns have no concept of day or night, they can often sleep for long periods at all times of the day. This can be unsettling for some parents who worry about good sleep habits early on, but Victoria-based sleep consultant Donna McLachlan says there’s no need for a schedule in the first four weeks. They need the sleep, so once they’re feeding well, you can rest assured that they will wake up when hungry.

WHEN YOUR BABY IS ON A NAP SCHEDULE AND HE HAS SLEPT PAST IT.

By about four or five months, when your baby has established a fairly regular nap cycle, McLachlan says it becomes possible for her to oversleep and throw off a healthy routine. “I tell parents when they have jetlag, they feel awful because they’re overtired and off their rhythm, and that’s how babies feel when they’re ‘off schedule,’ she explains. To keep babies on the right eat-play-sleep pattern during the day-which helps them sleep better at night-McLachlan recommends roughly sticking to a daytime schedule and waking them up if needed. In other words, don’t sweat an extra 20 minutes, but be prepared to wake them before they’ve clocked an additional hour or more of sleep during the day.

The one time when it’s a good idea to let your baby get some extra shut-eye at naptime? When she’s sick. Bridger says we all need a little extra sleep when we’re fighting off an illness-just make sure your baby is feeding enough to be nourished and stay hydrated. And ensure she’s not running a rectal temperature of 38C or higher.

Things 8

WE WISH WE’D KNOWN BEFORE HAVING A BABY

If you’re expecting your first baby, there’s a good chance you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information coming at you about ‘getting prepared’ for the birth, bringing baby home and all the challenges that this crazy thing called parenthood may throw your way.

Oh, and you’re probably sick of being told to ‘sleep while you still can!’. (What Is it with everyone’s need to fill first-time expectant parents with fear about sleep deprivation?)

Over on Instagram, we have a wonderful community of parents with an honest and supportive approach to sharing pregnancy, birth and parenting advice. And we recently asked our followers a question: if you could go back to when you were expecting your first baby and give yourself some advice, what would it be?

Here’s what the fabulous Pattie & Co. parents told us.

1. EVERYTHING IS A PHASE, AND EVERY PHASE PASSES

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that babies are masters of the curveball: the minute we think we’ve successfully navigated one challenge, along comes a new one to test us!

The good news is, pretty much every tricky stage we go through with babies is just a phase. These phases do eventually pass, and we do eventually come out the other side. It can be hard to call this mantra to mind when you’re in the thick of cluster feeding, teething or a sleep regression, but if you can, dig deep and repeat ‘this too shall pass’ to yourself a few times. It really does help.

2. BREASTFEEDING ISN’T EASY. IT CAN TAKE A WHILE TO GET INTO THE SWING OF IT.

This was a common theme among the answers we received. When I was pregnant, I felt like all the information I was given about breastfeeding made it sound like something that just magically happens: baby is born, independently finds their way to the boob, latches on like they’ve been doing it forever and feeds beautifully.

48 l SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2023 l project-baby.co.uk
PREGNANCY

While this might be the case for some, it certainly wasn’t my experience. And having since had this conversation with lots of other mums, it seems it’s not the experience for many of us.

If you’re thinking you’d like to give breastfeeding a go, it’s worth knowing that it’s often something that takes time and perseverance. You and baby are both learning – it’s something neither of you have ever done before, after all! If it doesn’t go smoothly from day one, don’t panic. Go easy on yourself, seek advice and support from experts if you’d like some (this NHS guide is a great place to start) and just take it one day at a time.

3. YOUR BABY IS THEIR OWN PERSON. THEY DON’T FOLLOW A MANUAL, SO JUST GET TO KNOW YOUR LITTLE ONE AND GO WITH IT.

A big thank you to Claire Milligan for this golden nugget of advice. It really resonated with me, because when my son was a baby I became so acutely aware that he was sleeping less and feeding more than the books said he should, it drove me to distraction. I felt like I was doing everything wrong and I was constantly battling to get him to do things differently. I wish I’d had the confidence to just tune into him and my instincts and trust them to tell me what he needed.

As a new parent, it’s easy to get drawn into ‘comparisonitis’ and worry that your baby isn’t following the same path as others or doing what the books say. But remember every baby is different, and the ‘right’ way is the way that works for them and for you.

And, whatever you do, avoid the temptation to fall down an internet rabbit hole with every little question or concern (I speak from experience here!). If you do have any worries at all about your baby’s development, make your GP or health visitor your first port of call, not Dr Google!

4. IT’S OKAY TO SAY NO TO YOUR IN-LAWS VISITING ON THE DAY YOU COME HOME FROM HOSPITAL

Or anyone else, for that matter! And this doesn’t just apply to the day you come home – during those first days and weeks you have absolute power of veto over all visitors and arrangements.

It’s natural to want to show your baby off and introduce them to the special people in your life, and if you feel ready it can be wonderful to have a house full of loved ones admiring your baby. But if at any point you don’t feel up to it, don’t be afraid to say so and call off any planned visits. Most people will absolutely understand how you’re feeling – especially if they’ve been parents themselves – and will have no problem rescheduling.

Another top tip is to prioritise visits from the people you know will be helpful and bring food, shopping or generally do something useful while they’re with you (like putting the vacuum round or cuddling your baby while you have a shower). If you suspect anyone will linger for hours and expect a constant supply of tea and biscuits, their invitation can wait!

5. YOU MIGHT SWEAT A LOT AT NIGHT AFTER GIVING BIRTH

Kelly, a mum of one from Devon, told us that postpartum night sweats came as a huge shock to her:

“In the weeks after having my little girl I experienced postpartum night sweats. And when I say sweats, I mean SWEATS. I had no idea it was even a thing and was totally unprepared for it! After speaking to my GP and other mums I soon realised it’s totally normal and very common. So don’t be alarmed if this happens to you!”

6. YOU WON’T ENJOY ALL OF IT. THAT’S OKAY AND VERY, VERY NORMAL.

There needs to be so much normalisation of this sentiment. Popular culture is overwhelmingly biased towards the narrative that having a new baby is a blissful time in our lives. And yes, lots of it IS amazing. But let’s be honest, the path to parenthood is far from easy – whether you’ve carried your baby for nine months and given birth, watched someone you love give birth or finally adopted your child after a lengthy application process or surrogacy journey.

By the time your little one makes their entrance, you’re likely to be feeling physically drained, emotionally overwhelmed and/or completely exhausted. And now you have full responsibility for this tiny, demanding human! Looking after a newborn is hard work and pretty monotonous at times, and it isn’t all enjoyable. New parents often feel guilty for thinking and feeling this, but it’s categorically okay – more than okay! –not to love every single second.

Do, however, keep in mind that if you experience prolonged periods of sadness, hopelessness, guilt or self-blame after you’ve had a baby, it could be a sign of postnatal depression. It’s important to talk to your midwife, GP or health visitor if you feel like this. If you’d like more information on PND, including sources of help and treatment, this article on the Tommy’s website gives a great overview.

7. HAPPY PARENTS = HAPPY BABY

When you’re in that new-baby fug, it seems inconceivable that you’ll ever find time for yourself again. It’s common for new parents to feel guilty for even craving a bit of me-time, but putting your well-being at the bottom of the list benefits no one, least of all your baby.

Try and find little pockets of time to do something that’s not at all related to being a parent. It might be something as simple as a soak in the bath, a coffee and catch-up with a friend or ten minutes uninterrupted with a book. Taking a break from routine, even if it’s just a walk around the block, can make you feel refreshed and more like yourself.

8. PUT A NOTE ON THE DOOR ASKING PEOPLE NOT TO KNOCK OR RING THE DOORBELL

Trust me when I say you will feel an unprecedented level of rage towards any unsuspecting postie or delivery person who rings the doorbell and wakes your baby from their hard-won nap!

It’s best to try and avoid such scenes by popping an unmissable note on the door that politely asks people NOT to knock/ring the doorbell and gives instructions for where to leave any parcels.

BEST FITNESS EXERCISES

for Postpartumn

Congratulations on your new little one! We all know what it means for your sleep, but what does it mean for your postpartum fitness?

For some women, exercise is the last thing on their mind during the first month postpartum.

In fact, many obstetricians and midwives suggest waiting four to six weeks after you give birth before beginning to exercise.

1. START POSTPARTUM WORKOUTS SLOWLY

Swimming is incredibly effective in working your heart and lungs without putting too much pressure on your joints.

For postnatal women, swimming or an aqua aerobics class are effective in adding muscle tone, while providing a gentle exercise that won’t strain your body too much after birth. However, it is advisable to stay clear of

the swimming pool until any postnatal bleeding has stopped and scarring has healed if you had a caesarean.

2. PRENATAL YOGA

Many postnatal women find yoga beneficial, as it encourages relaxation in the post-birth whirlwind while helping to strengthen core muscles and prevent back pain.

Jill Simpson, founder of MINDBODY studio Ebb&Flow explains: “Postnatal yoga is a great way to get strong again in specific areas, such as your core muscles. It’s also a time to focus on you, connect with other mums whilst boosting your energy.”

There are even yoga classes you can bring your baby to.

3. POSTPARTUMN PILATES

Pilates is one of the most effective pre- and postnatal exercises as it targets the muscles that generally weaken during pregnancy.

Erica Foulds, master trainer at MINDBODY studio Ten Health & Fitness explains: “As Pilates is non-impact, compared to other forms of exercise, the risk of injury is reduced, so not only is it physically beneficial and advisable, but knowing you’re exercising safely can also help to reduce anxiety and provide reassurance during classes.

“There are also mental and emotional benefits, as Pilates is a highly immersive and focused form of exercise; the focus and concentration required make a great ‘time-out’ from everyday pressures.”

DON’T FORGET!

Any mother will be very familiar with pelvic floor exercises. These exercises are incredibly important, as they help to strengthen the muscles that come into great strain in pregnancy and childbirth. “Begin by sitting, standing or laying down in a comfortable position and squeeze and lift your pelvic floor muscles (these are the ones you use when you’re trying to hold in a pee). Hold this contraction for up to ten seconds, then relax. Repeat ten times and aim to do three or four sets each day!

HEALTH & FITNESS Avoid these post-baby weight gaining situations and you’ll shift those extra pounds PREGNANCY WEIGHT 5 Ways to Lose your By Andrea Cottee www.madeformums.com Image credit :- Natal Active JULY/AUGUST 2023 l project-baby.co.uk

Lapping up my childrens’ leftovers, eating chocolate ‘for energy’ and grabbing on-the-go foods have seen me pile on the weight even after pregnancy.

I should be slipping into skinny jeans by now – my youngest is over 2 years old. But it’s all literally gone pear-shaped since I became a mum.

“Time, or rather lack of it, is a huge issue facing mums,” says life coach Lynette Allen. “Once you have children, they become your priority, and their eating habits concern you more than your own. It’s quick and easy to satisfy your hunger with unhealthy fixes that put on weight.”

Here are the danger zones to avoid, to help you lose that leftover pregnancy weight.

DANGER ZONE 1: Breastfeeding binges

One of the first presents I received on becoming a mum was a bar of chocolate. It was big. The length of my 6lb 12oz newborn in fact. “You’ll need it for feeding,” said my friend Jo. “It’ll increase the calcium in your milk.”

True? Or just the start of a serious weight-inducing habit? “There are certainly more nutritious ways to up your calcium intake, like nibbling on cheese cubes or eating a natural yogurt,” says nutritional therapist Sally Gordon.

“Unlike chocolate, which gives you a buzz and then a crash, these sugar-free snacks help sustain your energy levels, meaning you’ll crave less food.”

“Stockpile healthy snacks that are easy to grab before you’re stuck on the sofa feeding,” adds Lynette. “A little preparation can stop a lot of extra weight going on.”

DANGER ZONE 2: Supermarket habits

If your pre-schooler’s pester power has you giving in and topping up your trolley with bags of sugary snacks or crisps, you need to change your shopping habits to lose weight.

“Having unhealthy snacks in the house only brings temptation, so buy individual treats, one at a time,” says Lynette. And if you do have them at home, keep a few anti-snacking tricks up your sleeve.

“I keep my kids’ treats in a tin with a picture of me at my slimmest on the lid,” says Jenny, 34, mum to Ryan, 2, and Freya, 4. “Now, whenever I get the urge to tuck in, the picture reminds me of how I want to look and it stops me from snacking.”

DANGER ZONE 3: Coffee mornings

Granted, swapping stories with other mums is a healthy thing to do, but filling your face with pastry items while you do it isn’t.

“It’s hard to have coffee without biscuits, but because they’re high in sugar and crammed with refined carbohydrates, they hamper your energy levels and digestive system,” says nutritional therapist Sally Gordon. “Wholegrain varieties, such as muffins or oatcakes, are a much better option. They release energy at a slower rate so you need to eat less throughout the day.”

DANGER ZONE 4: Home baking

Cooking may be great for bonding with your toddler, but baking cakes can be rubbish for your figure – especially if you’re in the habit of over-catering.

“Make sure that you only cook what you should reasonably eat in that day,” says Lynette. “Or if you make too much, give one of your neighbours a treat by packaging up any extra cakes and dropping them round.”

Again, baking wholegrain rather than white treats is better for your digestion and energy levels, so look for the healthiest recipes you can find.

DANGER ZONE 5: Caffeine

Personally, I believe all new parents should be immediately hooked up on coffee drips to combat fatigue. But according to the experts, caffeine plays havoc with our blood sugar, lowering levels and causing cravings. And adding sugar messes with your metabolism, too.

“Instead, try whizzing up a fresh fruit, live yogurt and skimmed milk smoothie to keep in the fridge. You’ll get a sweet but nutrient-rich boost when you need it,” says nutritional therapist Sally.

Distraction can work wonders too. “A lot of eating is habit,” says life coach Lynette. “Creating another ritual that doesn’t involve food avoids weight gain.”

Should you buy the snoo?

Happiest Baby is a brand dedicated to little ones across the world; its bestselling SNOO Smart Sleeper baby cot has become a favourite with parents for its scientific approach to sleep. Developed as a sanctuary for tired-eyed tots, this innovative design is responsive to their needs, offering gentle white noise and soothing rhythmic rocking that mimic the safety of the womb.

You start by swaddling your baby in one of three included SNOO Sacks (small, medium, or large) made of organic cotton and breathable mesh that the company says reduces overheating. The clip-in wings prevent risky rolling in the bassinet and keeps your newborn on his or her back all night— the best way to reduce the risk of SIDS, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Then, the magic happens:

The bed rocks your baby and plays white noise to help with falling asleep and staying asleep — just like your body naturally did in the womb. If your baby starts crying, the bassinet knows to speed up the motion and increase the soothing sounds to help even the fussiest babies relax. If that’s not impressive enough, Happiest Baby says the SNOO can calm most babies in under a minute.

There’s also a built-in app that lets you customize your baby’s settings. You can change the starting levels to be faster and louder, and the sensitivity to be more or less responsive to your baby’s cries. The app also tracks sleep so you can see the total amount your baby gets each day, the longest stretch per night, and weekly and monthly patterns like how much your baby sleeps during the day vs. night.

Needless to say, new parents are obsessed. Hundreds of reviews on the Happiest Baby website sing the bassinet’s praises and countless mommy bloggers have called it a “game-changer.” I felt alarmingly sleep-deprived with my firstborn, so I was dying to know if the machine was as magical as people said when I was expecting baby #2. Six months after using the bassinet, I’ll confidently join hundreds of parents in saying it’s worth the investment. Here’s why:

YOU AND YOUR BABY WILL GET MORE SLEEP.

The SNOO doesn’t change the fact that you’ll still wake up for midnight feedings. It does, however, prevent non-hungry wakings and it cuts down the time it takes to get your child back to sleep once feedings are done. Instead of having to get your little one back to sleep yourself, you can let the SNOO do the rocking for you. Not to mention, overtired parents sometimes fall asleep by accident, leaving their babies in dangerous situations. In fact, about 3,500 babies die each year from sleep-related incidents in the U.S. (yes, really!). Most of these occur in a parent’s bed where the baby can accidentally fall out or get smothered. Happiest Baby’s goal is to get more newborns into the SNOO and out of unsafe sleeping conditions.

THERE’S BUILT-IN SLEEP TRAINING

Most parents can agree that the ultimate goal is for children to learn to fall asleep on their own, but it can be a process to get to that point — one that can, at times, require letting your baby cry.

The SNOO’s technology helps soothe your baby when they wake up in the middle of the night so that they can learn to fall back asleep without your help.

Thanks to the bassinet, my second daughter started sleeping for long stretches on her own and easily made the switch to a crib when she turned six months old.

THE SNOO’S CUSTOMER SERVICE IS UNMATCHED.

With the purchase of your SNOO, you get access to customer care reps seven days a week to help you make the bassinet successful in soothing your baby.

Case in point: My little “Houdini” was escaping her swaddle, and they were able to teach me a trick to keep her arms in place.

She also went through a phase where the only time she was calm was in her swing and would have a meltdown any time I placed her in the bassinet. They said it was because most babies don’t like being flat on their backs and suggested keeping her legs elevated in the SNOO. Both tips worked right away.

THE REVIEWS ARE IN :-

Sarah from Brighton says:

He’s been sleeping in it since day 5 and it’s been amazing. I mean having a newborn is tough with a snoo or not but we truly believe that it has helped him have regular good night sleeps. From week 5 he was only waking up twice a night thanks to it and then from week 6/7 only once a night. In the morning to get an extra 30min I just ask the snoo to soothe him and I get an extra sleep.

Amy from Sheffield says:

I was unsure about this product, but genuinely it is superb. It definitely buys you an extra hour or so and that is worth every penny! but most importantly, our little girl seems to get on very well with it and soothes her much more than the standard crib.

David from London says: I love a gadget and this didnt disappoint, Game changer.

Project Baby Rating:

THE BOTTOM LINE

I’ll be the first to admit that the SNOO can’t do a better job of soothing a baby than an actual parent or caregiver, plus you’ll likely find yourself feeling tired: After all, raising a baby isn’t easy. But for me, those 1-2 hours a night that I got back by not having to stay up holding my baby after overnight feeds were what made the difference.

If you’re on the fence about the price, look at this way: The SNOO comes out to just over £6 a day if you use it for six months and the 30-day guarantee means you can return your bassinet for any reason before the month is up and get a full refund.

Considering the peace of mind (and extra “set of hands”) the SNOO offered, I encourage new parents to give it a try.

Getting ReadyFor Bathtime

Bathing your new baby may be about much more than just cleanliness. Giving your baby a bath can be a lovely way to strengthen your bond with each other. Some babies enjoy being in warm water right from the start, while others need a little time to get used to these new sensations on their skin. Whatever’s right for you and your baby, we have plenty of tips for keeping them clean and contented.

WHEN CAN MY NEWBORN HAVE THEIR FIRST BATH?

If they’re full-term and healthy, you can give your newborn their first bath as early as two hours after the birth. Keep the first bath short, no more than five minutes to 10 minutes.

You don’t need to wait for your baby’s umbilical cord stump to dry up and fall off, or for it to heal. A bath won’t make an infection in the stump more likely, and it won’t slow down the healing process. Make sure you allow it to dry off properly afterwards, though.

It can be a bit scary the first few times you bath your newborn. Try to stay calm and keep a firm hold of your baby when moving them in and out of the bath. You may like to have someone with you the first few times to support you and fetch anything you’ve forgotten. Until you get into a routine, you’ll probably find this happens often!

Handling a wriggling, wet and slippery baby takes practice and confidence, but rest assured you and your baby will get used to bathtime and enjoy it. Most babies are soothed by warm water and a bath may help a fussy baby to relax and calm down.

DEVELOPMENT

A bath twice a week or three times a week is enough to keep your newborn clean. Between baths, wash your baby’s face regularly, clean their genitals and bottom after each nappy change, and wipe any grime off their skin. If you enjoy giving them a bath every day, that’s fine, too.

If you live in a hard water area, bear in mind that too much tap water during the first month or so may dry out and damage your baby’s skin. You could add a little mild, liquid baby cleanser or bath emollient to the water to protect your baby’s skin. Though be aware that the emollient will make your baby slippery to handle.

When your baby is a newborn, you’ll probably find it easier to bath them during the day. After a couple of months you could start to make a bath part of their bedtime routine.

WHERE SHOULD I BATH MY NEWBORN

In the first few weeks, it may be easier to bath your baby in the kitchen sink or in a small, plastic baby bath.

You could use your big bath, but it can be awkward as you’ll need to kneel or lean over the side. When you’ve just had a baby, you need to be careful you don’t hurt your back.

If you do use your big bath, a bath support for your baby may help. Remember that while bath supports are helpful, never leave your baby alone in one, not even for a second. Babies can drown silently in as little as 5cm (2in) of water.

HOW DO I GIVE MY NEWBORN A BATH?

Choose a time of day when you’re not expecting any interruptions and have time to devote to your baby. It’s best if your baby is alert, contented, and between feeds, so they’re not tired, hungry or full.

GET EVERYTHING READY IN ADVANCE

You need to keep your newborn warm at bathtime as babies can lose heat from their bodies quickly. Make sure the room and water are warm, and close any doors and windows to avoid draughts.

Wash your hands, and then gather all the bath supplies that you’re going to need. These may include a top-and-tail bowl, cotton pads, a sponge or flannel, a mild baby cleanser, at least one clean towel, and at least one set of clean clothes and nappies. Newborns can wee and poo unexpectedly, so it’s best to be prepared.

Put cold water in the bath first, and then add the hot water, so the bath water is comfortably warm and less likely to scald your baby. If you’re going to use a sink or a bowl for hairwashing, have the water ready in these, too.

Fill the bath with about 8cm to 10cm (3in to 4in) of water.

If you have a bath thermometer, use it to check that the water is about 37 degrees C to 38 degrees C. If you don’t have a thermometer, gauge the water temperature with your elbow rather than your hand. The water should feel neither hot nor cold.

Undress your baby down to their nappy, and then wrap them in a towel. Keep their head uncovered so you can wash their face and hair before you put them in the bath. This way, you can give them a quick dip in the bath if they aren’t enjoying it or a bit longer if they love it.

Wash your baby’s eyes, ears, face, and neck with cotton pads and warm water, as you would for topping and tailing.

Hold your baby so that their head is over the bath water and, using your hand or a flannel,

massage their scalp with water.

If you don’t want shampoo getting in their bath water, use a sink or a bowl for this bit. Rinse their hair carefully and dry it. Washing their hair just once a week or twice a week is enough to keep them clean.

If your baby has cradle cap, you may want to wash their hair more frequently with a mild baby cradle cap shampoo.

Gradually slip your baby into the bath feetfirst, using one hand to support their neck and head. The water should be covering their shoulders so they don’t get cold. Never leave your baby alone in the bath, not even for a few seconds.

Wash your baby with water, or use a gentle liquid baby cleanser to protect their skin.

If your baby’s skin is dry or tender, you could add a little baby bath emollient to the water. Bear in mind that the emollient will make them slippery to handle.

If you prefer to bath your baby in just water, it’s still best to use a mild liquid baby cleanser or sensitive, unperfumed baby wipes to wash their nappy area. Using water alone makes it harder to wash the fatty poo off your baby’s bottom.

Use your hand, a flannel or a sponge to clean your baby from top to bottom, front and back. Avoid scrubbing your baby’s skin. Leave any creamy vernix in their creases, as it helps their skin barrier to develop.

Rinse your baby thoroughly, and then lift them out of the bath and straight on to a dry hooded towel. Lift them with one hand supporting their neck and head, and your other hand under their bottom, with your thumb and forefinger around one thigh.

DRY YOUR BABY OFF AND KEEP THEM WARM

Wrap your baby in the towel, pat them dry straight away, and then put their nappy on.

If your baby’s skin tends to be dry, you could smooth on a mild, unperfumed moisturising lotion, or cream.

Now dress your baby in clean clothes. Newborns lose heat rapidly so, depending on how cold it is, you may want to wrap them in a dry, warm blanket, too.

Summer Berry Salad

INFREDIENTS:

10 oz baby greens

1 cup fresh blueberries

1 cup fresh strawberries, quartered

½ cup crumbled feta cheese, blue cheese or goat cheese

1 cup candied walnuts

white balsamic vinaigrette dressing

METHOD

Once you get a little prep out of the way, by making the dressing and the candied walnuts, this salad comes together in a matter of minutes!

Make candied walnuts: Toast walnuts for 10 minutes. While walnuts cool, combine coconut sugar and water in a saucepan. Once sugar dissolves, add cinnamon, vanilla and salt. Mix in the walnuts and then spread on a lined baking sheet. They will cool and harden quickly.

Make dressing: While the candied walnuts are cooling, make the white balsamic vinaigrette by whisking together all ingredients in a glass bowl or jar until combined. Another option is to add all ingredients to a mason jar and shake to combine.
