Birthing Trends in 2017 Modern mums are taking charge of their labour like never before! From natural pain relief to after-birth care, read on to find out the top pregnancy trends for 2017

Hypnobirthing

Home Birth

While we have to admit it initially gave us visions of Derren Brown in a pair of hospital scrubs, self-hypnosis in childbirth is becoming a popular choice for expectant mums. Popularised by Fearne Cotton, who called hypnobirthing “the most intense and euphoric experience ever” following the birth of her second child Honey, hypnobirthing involves specific self-hypnosis and breathing techniques designed to apparently guide you through labour without severe pain. Sounds ideal! Hypnobirthing advocates say the key to a calm and relaxing birth is taking full control of your birth experience, taking the hard work out of labour.

Until relatively recently, home birth was the most common choice for expectant mothers. Long acknowledged to be a safe choice for low-risk mothers-to-be, it’s often associated with fewer interventions during labour and a quicker recovery time. Despite this, last year just 2.7% of births in the UK happened at home, compared to 30% in the Netherlands. Researchers think home birth is likely to get more popular in the coming years as women chose to give birth in an environment they know with a midwife on hand to help. Just don’t forget to prepare plenty of towels!

Eating Your Placenta You can dry it and have it made into pill form, you can fry it with onions or just eat it raw in the delivery room… Yes, as strange as it might seem, following a number of celebrity mums speaking out about the benefits it holds, eating your placenta (placentophagy) has become one of the more unexpected pregnancy trends for 2016. Supporters tell us that eating your placenta can help to raise your energy and breast milk quantity, as well as lowering the risks of postpartum depression and insomnia. Unfortunately these claims haven’t been fully tested yet, but experts are actively studying the benefits it might hold. We think we’ll stick to our vitamin pills…

Lotus Birthing The latest all-natural birth trend, lotus birthing involves leaving your little one’s umbilical cord attached until it naturally falls away, which can take up to 10 days after birth. The non-traditional practice has been said to help boost your baby’s blood volume and immune system in the days after birth. Other mums have chosen the more common method of delayed cord clamping, where the umbilical cord isn’t cut until after the cord pulsations have ceased or the placenta has been delivered. Research suggests that delayed cord clamping can let your newborn receive up to 30% more oxygenated blood and stem cells from the placenta. If you’re interested, discuss it with your midwife at your next appointment to see if this is an option for you.

AM I TOO STRESSED

t? n a n g e r P t e G o T That depends. There’s a clear link between stress and a difficulty in conceiving, but that doesn’t necessarily mean stress causes the difficulty. It is true that an inordinate amount of stress can lead to inhibited hormone function and a late or missed period every so often, but most researchers today believe that the main relationship between stress and infertility has to do with all of the side effects that stress can cause, so if you’re feeling stressed, it could be beneficial to address the issues individually. Side effects of stress that could contribute to impaired fertility.

Weigh t Problems

Bad Ha bits

One of the most common side effects of stress is weight problems, of which nutrition and exercise are the two prime factors. People respond to stress differently, so while one may use exercise as relaxation while forgoing meals, another may overeat, and skip out on exercise, losing and gaining weight respectively. Having a BMI that is either too low, or too high can negatively impact fertility, so it’s important to make sure that you’re in, or moving towards a healthy BMI as you try to conceive and prepare for pregnancy.

Having something that helps you relieve your stress is a good thing--for some it’s exercise, or a hobby. Many people however use alcohol or tobacco to help them relieve stress, which can have a serious impact on your fertility. A glass of wine or a beer here and there probably isn’t going to affect your fertility, but it is clear that there is some link between alcohol consumption and impaired fertility, so it’s probably best to avoid binging or consistently heavy drinking when you are trying to conceive.

Poor nutrition on its own can hamper fertility, as your body depends on getting plenty of nutrients like Vitamins A and C to develop healthy eggs, and regulate your hormone cycle. Over-exercise can also contribute to difficulty conceiving, as it can lead to hormonal imbalances, and cycle irregularity.

No t En ou gh Sleep Sleep is another very important factor in your general health, which goes hand-inhand with your fertility. A lack of sleep can negatively impact your fertility, as sleep is the time that your body recharges and prepares for the next day. One such way it does this is with the production of the hormone leptin, a hormone vital for regulating your cycle and ovulation--women who don’t get enough sleep may affect their leptin levels, which could hinder their chances of getting pregnant.

Another common effect of stress is a lack of interest in sex, and as you would imagine, it can be quite difficult to conceive if you aren’t having sex. However, sex is an excellent stress-reducer, as you release hormones that help your body relax, so while you may not be interested in sex when you’re stressed out, it can help in more ways than one when you are trying to conceive.

The Baby Whisperer

y Sa l lo He to r y you Bab

If you are pregnant, your caregiver will probably order an ultrasound exam around the 20th week. What can you expect from your ultrasound? Ready for your big 20-week ultrasound? Ultrasounds are common procedures during pregnancy. It’s a non-invasive prenatal test used to ensure that Baby is developing properly, to check the baby’s estimated size and to see how the baby, placenta and umbilical cord are positioned. At the 20-week ultrasound, it’s also an opportunity to learn the baby’s sex... if Baby is willing to reveal that information to you. The 20-week ultrasound is usually done with a special wand called a transducer that is used on the exterior of the belly. It allows the technician to “see” into the uterus. Earlier ultrasounds may be conducted with a “transvaginal probe” (To give you a hint what that’s like, they use a condom to sheath the probe before inserting it) because the baby is smaller.

What does the UltraSound Show? Ultrasound technology has improved a lot since its advent. If Baby cooperates, you can see fingers, toes, spines and even a little face! Also, you may be able to see the baby’s anatomy. Make your intentions known about finding out the gender (whether you want to or don’t), so that the ultrasound tech knows not to spill the beans. If you don’t tell,

26 l Jan/Feb 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

then you might accidentally find out - or worse, you might not be able to find out at all. The ultrasound works by sending high-frequency sound waves that are used to produce images of what’s inside you. You may not be able to recognise much of what you see, but the technician is trained to interpret the images. On most sonograms, the image is grainy black and white. The transducer - the part of the machine they rub on your belly (wand) - is moved around almost constantly, and the baby is swimming around, too! (You wouldn’t be the first mama-to-be who thought she’s expecting not a human baby but an alien one.)

Ultrasound Cheat Sheet Spine Some moms think the baby’s tiny spine looks a lot like a string of pearls - lots of little tiny bones in a line. It reminds me of the spine of dinosaur skeletons you see in natural history museums. Girl or boy? Girl parts look like three lines, while a boy part often appears pretty much as you’d expect. (Be sure not to confuse the umbilical cord and the penis. You might get a surprise at birth if you try to interpret the scan on your own!) Little face Waiting for the first glimpse of Baby’s face? The baby’s face will look a little spooky - like a skull mask - from certain angles. But it will seem super cute if you see your little one sucking his thumb in-utero!

pregnancy

More to Look For

Speak Up

Amniotic fluid will be one of the darker things on the scan, and the harder tissue - such as bone - will appear bright.

While you do need to let the technician concentrate on doing her job, not knowing what’s happening can be frustrating. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about what you are seeing (or if you can’t see). “For one of my ultrasounds in my first pregnancy, the ultrasound technician turned the screen away for the entire 30-minute process, did not talk to me and only printed out a picture at the end. I was too shy to say, ‘Can I see?’ Knowing what I do now, I would have no problem doing that. Speak up, talk to your technician,” said Brenda Mulligan, mother of two.

Preparing for the Ultrasound There really isn’t much to preparing for the ultrasound. Usually, the sonogram imaging specialists will ask you to have a full bladder (but then what pregnant woman doesn’t feel like she has a full bladder?). Depending on how long you have to sit in the waiting room, you may want to bring a bottle of water so that you can unload and refill while you wait so that you aren’t too uncomfortable. Why does your bladder need to be full? When your bladder is full, it acts as a balloon, pushing the uterus up out of the pelvis a bit, which helps the tech visualize the baby, umbilical cord, amniotic sac, placenta and uterus.

The Sound of Silence The ultrasound technician will need to concentrate on finding the right images and measurements for the doctor. (They actually have specific shots they need to capture and annotate.) And depending on the tech, that could result in a lot of silence. “It was nerve wracking at first, while the technician was just measuring and not speaking. We were relieved when she told us everything was perfect. We were not uncomfortable at all, just very excited to see our baby growing,” said Jacqueline Alvarado of Kent. So, don’t worry. Silence doesn’t signal something bad. Chances are, the tech is just concentrating.

Cold Goo for you The wand used to administer the ultrasound is slathered with a gooey gel that allows the wand to easily glide over your skin. Unless they have a special warmer on hand, get ready for a quick shock - the gel is cold. It will remain on your belly throughout the ultrasound. But don’t worry, the ultrasound tech will likely clean off as much as possible after the exam, or at least give you the paper towels to do so.

What to Wear? The technician will need to access your whole belly. Wear a loose fitting top that can be easily moved up and pants with enough give to be pulled down a bit. Also, do not wear a dress - or you will be in your skivvies for the exam. There won’t be a second chance to find out everything you want to know about what you are seeing. If you don’t ask now, you probably won’t have a chance to ask later since techs see many patients every day and won’t be able to answer your questions. Feeling shy? Enlist your partner or whoever goes with you to advocate on your behalf. Note: Only a physician can diagnose the content of the ultrasound, and at many practices, he or she is the only one who is allowed to report your Baby’s gender.

Every Ultrasound is Different Even if you’ve had an ultrasound before, you should know that every ultrasound is different. A variety of factors can influence the experience making it better or worse. “Your experience can be completely different depending on where the ultrasound takes place (an imaging department vs. at a doctor’s visit) and unfortunately, what kind of mood your ultrasound technician is in that day - how much they want to share with you on what they are seeing,” said Brenda. Just relax. You will be reclining on a padded table or exam chair, the lights will be dimmed and it will be quiet. It’s a perfect environment for “meeting” your baby for the first time!

Q& A

Q. What is a show? Will I bleed? A. Bloody show: this will be a small amount of blood and mucus. This is a very good sign that the cervix has started to dilate. This is what we call the barrier in your cervix which helps prevent germs getting to the baby.

Q. I have very little control down below I only need to sneeze and I leak urine so how do I know my waters have gone and its not urine? A. The difference is the smell. you will have a very sweet smell which will be inevitably different to the smell of urine.

Q. I am afraid of the pain, what would you suggest. A. As a birth coach I suggest to all my clients they switch off from everything around them, this will give you nothing to concentrate on apart from your contractions and breathing. A laboring woman is at her best and at ease most when she is not being questioned. Basically we say don't stimulate the neocortex of a laboring woman, this means in everyday life you are thinking, in labor you switch your thinking brain off, if you are then left, labor will be much much more manageable, the problem occurs when you are then asked a question, you then have to think and then realise the pain your experiencing.

Q. How will I know i’m in active labor? A. Active labor is when your contractions are less than 5 minutes apart. Established labor is when the contractions are less than 3 mins apart, this is when you need to go to hospital By Deearnas Maternity

Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep What can you do to solve your sleep problems during pregnancy? Here are some tried-andtrue suggestions: •  Avoid caffeine (in all its forms, so put that chocolate bar    down) after noon. •  Get your eight glasses of water (or other fluids), but taper    off at night.

knuma 4-in-1 Highchair

•  Drink if you’re thirsty, but don’t down a 16-ounce water    bottle right before bedtime. •  Exercise regularly - during the day or early evening. A    daily workout will help you sleep better, but if it comes too    close to bedtime, it could actually sabotage sleep (exercise   is energising). •  Have a light snack before hitting the hay to stave off    midnight hunger pangs. Include protein and a complex    carb (think cheese and a whole-grain muffin), as well    as some warm milk (it really works!) or decaffeinated    tea. Besides the duh (avoid caffeine, again in all its    forms - sorry, no chocolate with the warm milk), stay    away from sugar, which will give you an energy boost    when you least want one, and then leave your blood    sugar levels wobbly during the night (yet another strike   against chocolate). •  Take a warm bath just before bed. The soothing and    relaxing effects of the bath should help you summon the   sandman sooner. •  Crack a window - as long as the weather’s comfortable    (which for a pregnant woman means anything from 65    degrees on down-way down). The fresh air can be    soporific. If the weather’s not cooperative, keep the room    comfortably (for you, not your spouse) chilled. Remember,    your heat’s up, the thermostat’s should be down. •  Make love, if you’re in the mood. Or at least ask your man    for a massage - both of which can relax you. •  Try some relaxation exercises - visualisation, deep    breathing, meditation, or even yoga or chanting before    hitting the sack. And actually, counting sheep can work    the same way - the monotony of watching those little    guys jump over the fence can be truly relaxing (unless you    associate them with insomnia). •  Leave a night-light on in the bathroom - switching on the    overhead is way too much of a wakeup call and will make    it much harder to fall back asleep.

Niggles 6 Steps for Managing Family Finances When Money Gets Tight There may be nothing more frustrating than knowing there are bills to pay but not having enough to cover the amount due. However, if families were to really sit and look at their numbers together, there is a good chance more money could be found and reasonable changes made to the family budget for families to get ahead.

Allocation of Funds Now that you have the physical figures in front of you, it will be easier to divvy up the income you have for your variety of expenses. For instance, some families may find it easier to allocate funds on a weekly basis. Start With the Numbers Start with just a pen, paper, and a calculator. List all the income for the month at the start and deduct all expenses the family spends in a month for housing, utilities, food, entertainment, education, transportation, and general expenses. Make the Cuts Most families likely have a multitude of ways to cut back in their spending, but many choose not to cut down for convenience reasons. But when money is tight and the family is barely surviving paycheck to paycheck, it’s time to take out the red pen and slash expenses.

Set Limitations Couples should decide on limitations for spending without each other’s input. For instance, any purchase over £100 requires approval from both sides. Each person in the family should also receive an allowance of cash weekly to be spent as they see fit. This makes it easier to track one allocation of funds rather than multiple purchases. Create Goals as a Family After basic finances are discussed and budgets set up, have a family discussion about financial goals and how to reach them. Most kids aren’t concerned about making sure the electric bill is paid each month, but they

likely want to add their two-cents about family vacations, day trips, and other projects that require savings. Most kids aren’t concerned about making sure the electric bill is paid each month, but they likely want to add their two-cents about family vacations, day trips, and other projects that require savings. Moving Forward The initial task of getting your financial life together is often the most overwhelming part of the equation. However, facing it head on is the only way to regain control. Otherwise, you risk an unhealthy financial life for the whole family and a continued uphill struggle to make ends meet.

Baby Health

Children’s Oral Health What is Baby Bottle Toothe Decay? Baby bottle tooth decay is caused by the frequent and long-term exposure of a child’s teeth to liquids containing sugars. Among these liquids are milk, formula, fruit juice, sodas and

How Can I prevent Baby Bottle tooth decay? Try not to allow a child to fall asleep with a bottle containing milk, formula, juice or other sweetened liquids. Clean and massage the baby’s gums to help establish healthy teeth and to aid in teething. Wrap a moistened gauze square or washcloth around the finger and gently massage the gums and gingival tissues. This should be done after every feeding. Plaque removal activities should begin upon eruption of the first baby tooth. When brushing a child’s teeth, use a soft toothbrush and water. If you are considering using toothpaste before your child’s second birthday, ask your dentist first. Parents should first bring their child to the dentist when the child is between 6 and 12 months old. To incorporate these changes: Gradually dilute the bottle contents with water over a period of two to three weeks. Once that period is over, if you give a child a bottle, fill it with water or give the child a clean pacifier recommended by a dentist. The only safe liquid to put in a bottle to prevent baby bottle tooth decay is water. Decrease consumption of sugar, especially between meals. Children should be weaned from the bottle as soon as they can drink from a cup, usually by their first birthday, but the bottle should not be taken away too soon, since the sucking motion aids in the development of facial muscles, as well as the tongue.

other sweetened drinks. The sugars in these liquids pool around the infant’s teeth and gums, feeding the bacteria in plaque. Every time a child consumes a sugary liquid, acid produced by these bacteria attack the teeth and gums. After numerous attacks, tooth decay can begin. The condition also is associated with breast-fed infants who have prolonged feeding habits or with children whose pacifiers are frequently dipped in honey, sugar or syrup. The sweet fluids left in the mouth while the infant is sleeping increase the chances of cavities.

Why should I be worried about baby bottle tooth decay? Giving an infant a sugary drink at nap or nighttime is harmful because during sleep, the flow of saliva decreases, allowing the sugary liquids to linger on the child’s teeth for an extended period of time. If left untreated, decay can result, which can cause pain and infection. Severely decayed teeth may need to be extracted. If teeth are infected or lost too early due to baby bottle tooth decay, your child may develop poor eating habits, speech problems, crooked teeth and damaged adult teeth. Healthy baby teeth will usually result in healthy permanent teeth.

Parents are a child’s first teachers in life “Parents are often surprised when they are told that their infants can develop tooth decay and cavities soon after their teeth first appear,” It’s usually call ed baby bottle tooth decay, which is caused by the long-term exposure to liquids containing sugars like milk, formula, and fruit juice. There are many things that parents can do with their child at home to maintain good oral health: • •

• •

Clean your infant’s gums with a clean, damp cloth twice a day. Ask your dentist when you may begin to rub a tiny dab of toothpaste on your child’s gums. Doing so will help your child become accustomed to the flavor of toothpaste. As soon as the first teeth come in, begin brushing them with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste. Help a young child brush at night, which is the most important time to brush, due to lower salivary flow during sleep and higher susceptibility to cavities and plaque.

Baby health

The

Natural Way People will say “Oh, they’re just baby teeth” But actually they are far more important and pave the way for good healthy adult teeth. When a baby is born, the first set of teeth are already there, just under the gums. The arrival of a baby’s first tooth is always an exciting time! The front teeth usually begin to come through the gums between six and twelve months. Over the next 2 years the remaining ‘baby’ teeth will appear. By the time a child is 3 years old all 20 baby teeth will have arrived. These teeth are very important for eating, talking and smiling. They also keep spaces for the adult teeth. No honey Diet and a Baby’s Dental Health Babies are not born with a sweet tooth. Babies will enjoy home-made baby foods without sugar. If you’re buying baby foods, look out for the ones without sugar. You don’t have to buy special juices either. Babies will enjoy ordinary fruit juice. For very young babies you should dilute juice with plenty of cooled boiled water. Sugar and sugary foods can be a tooth’s worst enemy. For good dental health cut down on how often a baby eats sugary foods and drink. Give them as part of a meal instead of between meals if you can. Having sugary foods and drinks too often puts the teeth at risk of tooth decay. This is especially important once the baby teeth start to appear (around 6 months). The best way of caring for a baby’s teeth is to give food that helps a baby grow and develop. You can use the Food Pyramid as a guide – choose plenty of the foods from the bottom of the pyramid, and less of the foods at the top. You can see that sugary foods are at the top of the Pyramid.

Baby bottle Feeding It is important not to give sweet drinks in a bottle. This can be harmful once a baby’s teeth start appearing. Try not to let the baby develop the habit of sleeping with a bottle at night or at nap time. Infants and toddlers should not be put to bed with a feeding bottle or dinky feeder. Baby’s bottle should be used for feeding – not as a dummy. A baby will be able to use a cup at 6 months, and they can be weaned off a bottle by 12 months. Give baby plenty of cooled boiled water to drink and about 1 pint of milk each day (breast or formulated milk up to one year and cows milk after that).

Baby chewing ring. Some babies get sore gums when they are teething. Babies can get restless or irritable, and they might start sleeping or feeding badly. Sometimes this may lead to problems digesting food or to loose stools. Teething doesn’t make a

baby really sick, though, so any sick child should be seen by a doctor - don’t pass it off as just ‘teething’. If baby’s gums seem sore or baby seems cranky and dribbles a lot, there are some things that you can do to help. Try giving baby something to chew on. There is a good selection of teething rings on the market - but make sure they are made of soft material and are big enough so that there is no danger of choking. Some parents/carers find that teething rings containing fluid which can be cooled in the fridge are best. Milk, cooled boiled water, or very diluted sugar-free fruit juices may help - sweet drinks do not. If baby wakes at night and is irritable, you can use a mild pain reliever - preferably sugar-free. Ask your doctor or public health nurse to recommend one. Avoid ointments which numb the gum unless your dentist recommends them.

Soothers Not all children need soothers or pacifiers. If you feel the baby needs a pacifier it is important to make sure it is of the correct design. An Orthodontic type one is the most suitable. Only use it when absolutely necessary and wean the baby off it as soon as possible. Otherwise it may have long term ill effects on the way a baby’s teeth grow. Never dip the soother into sugary liquid (honey, jams or syrupy medicines) to encourage the child to use it. Finding the right toothpaste for babies and toddlers is tough! Store shelves are lined with sparkly blue toothpaste filled with dye, chemicals, and unfamiliar colors. Most toothpastes simply aren’t the safest option for babies and kids. Jack n’ Jill have a great range of kids toothpastes that are free from fluoride, SLS, artificial flavours, colours and preservatives. They are all natural as well and made with ingredients that are safe for little mouths and tummies. There are three delicious flavours available that are certified organic (strawberry, blueberry and banana) and one that is flavour free! They’re formulated to work on sensitive gums and come in delicious flavours that even the fussiest kids will love!

Mum Tip “Use a soft weaning spoon they’re nice and small so you can try little teeny spoonfuls at first.”

HappyEating A survey, launched by leading baby food brand Organix, reveals that one of the biggest barriers to introducing new foods during weaning is baby’s facial expression in response to new tastes. It can be challenging to introduce new foods during weaning and the faces babies pull can be interpreted by parents as disgust or dislike at what they are trying, which can make it all the harder. The Organix weaning survey reveals: •    More than half (55%) of mums say a baby’s facial expression puts them off trying to     encourage their baby to like a new taste and flavour. •    49% say it’s a struggle to keep babies interested in food. •    42% say they find it hard to get babies to try new foods during weaning. From sweet carrot to sour lemon and bitter broccoli, weaning is the beginning of a taste adventure, the first opportunity for your baby to explore and experience taste sensations. Evidence shows that it can take between 10 and 15 times to introduce a new food or flavour and that learning about food is all about familiarity and repetition. So by understanding more about their babies’ facial expressions, parents are likely to feel more confident about introducing new foods. Baby faces and understanding what they mean … But what is the meaning of that face your baby pulls as they try a new food for the first time? What’s your baby really trying to tell you?

Mum Tip “Keep trying - if your little one rejects a new food, offer it again in a few days’ time. If they still say no, try again in a few weeks’ time”

“For example, what mums and dads might interpret as a look of shock or disgust, doesn’t necessarily translate as not liking the taste, what’s more likely is that baby is puzzled by the intensity of a new flavour. A surprised expression could be curiosity about the depth of flavour, the chances are they think the flavour is good but it’s very different to what they’ve eaten before – it’s all part of them experiencing and learning new tastes on their weaning journey.” It can be challenging to keep offering new foods and coming up with new and inspiring ideas to tempt little ones, but it’s important as those first tastes during weaning help define a child’s future relationship with food.

Weaning is an exciting time for everyone so for lots more weaning advice, weaning recipes - from purées to finger foods - and to download your free copy of the Organix Little Book of Weaning please visit www.organix.com or follow #realfoodface project-baby.co.uk

The Multy, which has been developed in the UK and Sweden, boasts a number of unique aspects to its design and manufacture which have helped it attract the interest of many of the UK’s leading baby and child product retailers. Firstly, its stylish crib has been designed not only to rock forward and backwards to mimic the gentle rocking of a baby in its parent’s arms, but for the crib to fix in various slightly tilted positions, to help babies suffering with reflux and struggling to sleep (estimated to be around 40 per cent).

“The key was to provide a product which plays a key role in family life from the birth of a child to the age of 10. That’s what makes The Multy unique and great value, and we believe that is why we are now seeing such a buzz and such interest around our product. It has made the hard work worthwhile.”

Uniquely, The Multy then converts into a highchair once a baby is too big for the crib and ready to start sitting up, freeing up the crib to be converted into an attractive and spacious storage system, which can be stood on a floor or fixed to a wall. The highchair then finally concerts to a child’s seat, which can be used to around the age of 10 (but can actually withstand the weight of most adults). The Multy was a product born out of a father’s love and dedication to his new son, as Ninnananna director Greg Feehally’s baby boy, Winston, was unfortunately suffering from repeated tummy ache and reflux, and therefore struggled to sleep in his first few months. Greg, an experienced carpenter, said: “Research told me he’d be more comfortable lying at an angled position, and he loved being rocked to sleep, so I set to work and combined the two elements and he was soon soundly sleeping through the night. “It was then, as a parent, I got to thinking about what an expensive purchase a crib can be, given they only last a handful of months. It was then I looked to see how the product could develop, and introducing the highchair made perfect sense, as it is another key purchase for any new parents.” “It has been a long road to get to this stage and finally see

Project Baby Review We love the concept of the Multy making your money go further without comprimising the quality of the product. It was surprisingly simple to convert from stage to stage, it doesn’t come with a mattress but these are easily available and Project Baby highly reccomend Little Green Sheep matrresses. For under £200 it really is money well spent, you cannot buy a crib and a highchair for £200 without even thinking about the storage options. I loved how you can tilt the crib, gone are the days when you need to roll a blanket up and prop under the mattress if your baby is suffering from Colic or reflux. The high chair aspect is suitable to 10 years but It takes my weight as an adult and is very sturdy. I love the storage aspect, you can never get enough storage. Can you? I would highly reccomend the Multy to any parent who is looking for a product that is real value for money at the highest quality.

Project Baby Rating:

The Multy can be bought directly from Ninnananna, for £199.99 buy direct from www.ninnananna.eu

PREGNANCY

Top10 Pregnancy quirks P

regnant, say what? Yep, the news is out. I’m expecting my first child. I’m currently 23 weeks and going strong. Besides the gut wrenching morning sickness I had for my first trimester, my pregnancy is going rather smoothly. I haven’t reached the uncomfortable stage, but I’m learning and experiencing new quirks and realities daily. A couple though, have caught me by surprise. Here’s how:

1. Bye Bye Ab Strength. With a bun in the oven, using my abdomen is almost nonexistent. I didn’t realise how much I utilised that muscle group before.

40 l Jan/Feb 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

From running, to yoga and then to bending down, my middle half is tighter and bigger as it prepares to make room rather than tone up. Treading water takes extra effort because I didn’t have my stomach muscles to keep me afloat and having a couple pounds in the middle makes it harder.

Holding a standing pose in yoga takes extra effort because I can’t depend on my stomach to keep me still.

2. That super sensitive powerful pregnancy nosesmells everything! Even the rotten trash and when someone cuts the cheese miles away. Maybe not miles, but close. My sensitive nose can pick up those silent crop dusters anywhere in public! For weeks, I plugged my nose every time I opened my fridge because of the “rotten food smell”.

pregnancy Having my husband do several sniff tests, he confirmed my senses are wack and our fridge smelled fresh and clean. Aside from the stinky stenches, cinnamon rolls and pizza smell better than heaven.

3. It’s ok to play the P-Card.

will name him.” Fast forward to the real world and pregnancy, and that cutesy little name suddenly does not match with my married last name. Or, the name is not a fit for the baby. When picking out a name, you put on the pervert and kid-bullying hat and make darn sure whatever your child’s name will be, doesn’t rhyme with a dirty word or something kids can make fun of.

No more kneeling in church for me. Sitting, rather than kneeling through Catholic mass, is not only for the elderly. Pregnant women are allowed too! Can’t take a water bottle in someplace? Tell them you’re pregnant. That happened to me at a museum. I need water with me at all times.

9. Car boot sales and second hand shopping is the way to go.

4. Being pregnant is kind of fun. Rubbing my belly, dressing up in a pregnancy maxi dress and drinking lemonade isn’t so bad…it’s fun. I thought, I would die going months without wine. Nope, it’s actually ok. I don’t have to wear a tent or ugly baggy clothes, I wear my old stuff and some new, cute maternity clothes. Best part, my friends and sister gave me bags and bags of maternity wear for free. A new closet of clothes makes me very happy.

5. People are really, really nice to pregnant women. Strangers open doors for me all the time. I notice random people smiling at me and my belly, or pointing it out and saying “Is that lady pregnant?”. Cars yield to me when walking across a car park (because no one wants to hit a pregnant lady). Restaurant servers are very quick and precise with my food order. This kind of service is great, I’m going to miss it when I take a screaming toddler in public and everyone glares at me instead.

My original pregnancy thought was that I would go all Pea in the Pod and boutique baby shopping. Noooo, it’s much cheaper to buy second hand baby items for half the price. Plus, many of my friends and family members are helping giving me so much for free already! A dear friend gave me her high chair and baby food maker. My sister gave me a bag full of baby clothes. I bought a barely used crib for £80; the original price was £250.. I feel good about the bargain shopping. Sure, I may splurge and buy one or two things from Baby Gap or JoJoMama, but I’m not breaking the bank with the first kid.

10. The extra food, is WORTH it. I just read an article that Stacy Keibler said “Pregnancy Isn’t an Excuse to Eat Donuts”. Um, Stacy you are wrong because you need to splurge once in a while and not live by the Hollywood bone thin book so much. Not with 10 donuts but one or two a week is fine in my book. That extra sweet treat gets my blood pumping and my baby kicking. A healthy diet while pregnant is very important, but so is indulging with a naughty craving. And trust me, I’m much happier.

6. You know that pregnancy glow? Yeah, it’s called a blemish and a breakout. I feel like I’m sixteen again minus the smaller dress size: my face is broken out! Permanently. That’s called hormones. Did I mention the hormones yet? Holy roller coaster. I haven’t felt this intense and with blemishes since I was younger. Oh yes, those pesky pimples don’t go away, possibly after birth too.

7. The baby kicking is NOT aforeign anti-body moving inmy stomach. That was my previous thought of pregnancy. Actually, it’s quite the opposite now. I love feeling the baby! He moves and grooves all the time. Best part, having my husband feel the strong football kicks. But this is new mummy talk, wait until I’m more along and my son kicks me in the ribs.

8. Picking a name is NOT easy. Ah, I remember those carefree days when I would hear a cute name and say, “Oh, if I have a baby boy someday, that’s what I project-baby.co.uk

Safety

Know the Law! Current UK law states that all children must use the correct seat when travelling in a car until they are 12 years old or 135cm tall. New regulations are expected to come into effect in December 2016 which will change that, meaning backless booster seats will only be approved for older children.

Toddler Troubles How Long should it take to potty train?

How often should my toddler poo? Some little ones have a bowel movement right after dinner or right before bed, like clockwork. Others’ poop habits are less predictable. Most of the time it’s not a problem. When to worry? If there are major changes, such as much more frequent pooping, painful stools, blood in the stools, or ongoing diarrhea, check with your doctor.

Every night is a battle at bedtime what should i do? Many toddlers fight bedtime -- often they just want to be where you are. Don’t cut his nap to wear him out. Most kids this age still need an afternoon nap. Cutting it can make him cranky or too wired at bedtime because he’s overtired. Instead, stick with a consistent, relaxing bedtime routine every night. Give him a comfort object like a blanket or stuffed toy, and read him a book. Does he need extra reassurance? Try a night-light, or leave the door cracked.

Top Toddler Tips 1. Pick Your Battles “If you’re always saying, ‘No, no, no,’ your child will tune out the no and won’t understand your priorities,”

2. Be Consistent

If your child is ready to use the toilet, it usually takes about 6 weeks from first introducing the potty to the time she’s going on her own and staying dry most of the time. Even after your child is staying dry during the day, it can be months and even years before your child can make it through the night. Although potty training is a big milestone -- and one much anticipated by parents! -- you’ll want to be sure your toddler is ready. Forcing toilet training on a child who is really resisting can backfire. Instead, try to make potty time fun (read stories, sing songs). Offer nonfood rewards like stickers or trips to the park. And don’t make your child stay on the toilet if she doesn’t want to.

“If your reaction to a situation keeps changing one day you let your son throw a ball in the house and the next you don’t -- you’ll confuse him with mixed signals.”

3 Give time out Before imposing a time-out, give a warning in a stern tone of voice (“I’m counting to three, and if you don’t stop, you’re going to time-out. One, two, THREE!”). If she doesn’t listen, take her to the spot you’ve designated for time-outs, and set a timer.

TRAVEL

Baby Travel Taking baby abroad

Heading abroad for the school holidays? Wondering what to pack for your baby’s first trip? Here’s a full list of space-saving items for babies and toddlers…

15 Things To Pack For Baby’s First Holiday 1. A stroller Choose a lightweight stroller that lays flat and is easy to fold – you’ll be opening and closing it all the time. It shouldn’t count towards your luggage allowance and you can push it all the way up to the boarding gate, although you’ll need to take your little one out when you go through security

2. A new toy for flight Pick something multifunctional – Lamaze toys are great for young babies – and go for something quiet (or at leastwith a volume button).

3. An elaborate necklace When you’ve got a baby sat on your lap for the duration of a flight, it pays to have something that’s a) tied round your neck, and therefore can’t be thrown on the floor, and b) a distraction from pulling your earrings/glasses/nose The beadier, the better. Nibblingjewellery have some great sets.

4. Sterilising spray Aquaint’s 100% natural steriliser comes in a 50ml bottle so it’s perfect for hand luggage, and you can use it to clean bottles, dummies, grubby surfaces – you name it. A must for camping, too.

5. Bottles and milk

7. Food pouches We love Bebease food pouches – you can squeeze the food straight onto a spoon or straight into your baby’s mouth (when you’ve forgotten a spoon). There’s no glass to smash in your luggage, and they stack neatly. If you’re taking a couple in your hand luggage, check the weight.

9. A portable highchair I confess, I haven’t tried this Totseat washable highchair, but it’s been highly recommended by friends and I’ll be adding it to my Christmas list. Perfect if you get caught short while you’re out.

10. A pop-up tent If you can fit it in your luggage – and you’re planning on getting out and about quite a bit while you’re there – a UV pop-up tent is a lifesaver. You can get lightweight ones that fold down to next-to-nothing, and it’ll save you constantly searching for shade.

11. A compact changing bag Our PacaPod really came into its own on holiday. They’re specially designed for travel, and have smaller bags that fit within the main bag so you can get to whatever you need really quickly and streamline if necessary.

12. A buggy shade Our SnoozeShade gave my little boy some shelter from the sun and a dark-ish place to nap in the day, and helped him to settle when we were out and about at night. Not only that, but it’s one-size-fits-all, so we use it loads at home on our ‘normal’ buggy.

Tommee Tippee’s milk powder dispenser pots are genius – they fit inside the top of standard Closer To Nature bottles filled with pre-boiled water, so you don’t have to take a separate pot for formula, and everything stays sterile.

13. A baby carrier

6. Disposable bibs

14. A travel blackout blind

They’ll save you forever washing bibs while you’re away and they’re pre-folded. Another useful bit of kit for bigger/messier kids is a long-sleeved waterproof bib like this one by Lassig. When you’re done, wash it under the tap, hang it out in the sun and it’ll be dry in 5 minutes.

Our Ergobaby was a lifesaver in the hilly, cobbled streets of San Gimignano. Plus, it meant we didn’t have to queue for lifts, or navigate a buggy through busy crowds.

If your baby needs darkness to sleep, try the Gro Anywhere Blackout Blind – it’s got suction cups so you can stick it to most windows.

15. Baby sun cream They’ll need their own, as it’s specially formulated for new skin. project-baby.co.uk

A wonderful house, which consists of two large (17ft diameter) round towers, that were originally used for drying hops for beer making during the late 19th century. The house also has a delightful “country style” kitchen, with green tiled floor and light oak fitted units either side. At one end stands a stripped pine dresser, which displays the china you use and in the centre is a magnificent light oak table that can seat 12. Aid Fitting, Seizures and Convulsions

1 in 20 people will experience some sort of a seizure during their lives. A seizure (the medical term for a fit or convulsion) occurs when there is a sudden burst of electrical activity in the brain which temporarily interferes with the normal messaging processes.

Seizures can be focal (partial) when only one part of the brain is affected, or generalised when both sides of the brain are involved. There are variations within these definitions too. Sometimes a seizure can start as focal and then develop into a more complex generalised one.

real life First Aid Foca l (partia l) Seizures

If your child sta rts fittin g:.

These can affect a large part of one hemisphere or just a small area in one of the lobes. What happens during the seizure will depend on where in the brain the seizure happens and what that part of the brain usually does. This is why it can be helpful to observe someone whilst they are having a seizure as it can help neurologists identify what part of the brain is effected. Often the person having a seizure remains conscious but experiences a strange sensation, rigidity of their muscles and confusion.

•  Move things away from them to avoid   injury, protect their head, but do not pick   them up or restrain them. •  Time how long the fit lasts and observe any   events during the seizure. •  Do not put anything in their mouth. They   may bite their lips or tongue but there is   nothing you can do whilst they are still fitting. •  Cool them if possible.

Gen era lised an d Secon da rily Gen era lised Seizures Generalised seizures affect both sides of the brain at once and can happen without warning, sometimes occurring straight after a focal seizure. The person is likely to lose consciousness, even if just for a few seconds. Afterwards they are unlikely to remember the seizure and may be confused and disorientated about what has happened. There are many causes of seizures. Any head injury or stress to the brain can cause fitting; as can brain tumours, meningitis, malaria, eclampsia in pregnancy, poisoning, lack of oxygen, raised body temperature, epilepsy, drug and alcohol use and withdrawal. A diagnosis of epilepsy is made when someone has had at least one unprovoked seizure which cannot be attributed to any other cause. Seizures cause rigid, out of control movements. The casualty may experience absence seizures, where they become rigid and unresponsive, full thrashing-around tonic-clonic fits, or anything in between.

The fit can last from seconds to minutes, and they could go blue and stop breathing for less than a minute during this fitting period. Once the seizure stops they are likely to be confused and drowsy. They may be unresponsive for a while and need to be put into the recovery position. Unfortunately, once they’ve had one fit, they are likely to have more, so always keep their temperature down during illness. Fortunately, febrile convulsions do not appear to cause any long-term damage and your child will grow out of them, usually by the time they are 5-6 years old.

Note: Outside the UK, if someone is bitten or licked in a wound, it is really important to get medical attention very fast and have anti-rabies medication. It is also important to ensure that the child is covered for tetanus.

Febrile Con vulsion s:

Ton ic-clon ic seizures

Febrile convulsions are the most common sort of seizure and can be very frightening. They most often occur in young children when they are unwell and their temperature rises causing them to fit. It is remarkably common, affecting 2-5% of children under five years.

They may fall to the ground as they lose consciousness. The body goes stiff and rigid and they may cry out as if in pain. This is an involuntary action as the muscles force air out of the lungs. Your child is not in pain and is usually unaware of the noise they are making. They can begin to appear blue around their mouth and finger tips.

If a child’s temperature is higher than normal you can help to reduce their temperature and prevent fitting by: •  taking off excess clothing •  gently sponging your child under the arms   and on their forehead with a tepid flannel,   providing it doesn’t cause them any distress   and doesn’t over-cool them •  giving them plenty to drink •  giving them Paediatric Paracetamol or   Paediatric Ibuprofen to reduce symptoms   and make them feel better

60 l Jan/Feb 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

Clon ic pha se They may rigidly jerk around as the muscles alternately relax and tighten. They may make a snoring noise as the tongue flops to the back of the airway, they could be incontinent and might bite their tongue.

Post-ictal (i.e. post-seizure) phase Once the jerking stops, they may be confused, sleepy, agitated or unresponsive. If you are

worried about their airway put them in the recovery position. They may not know who they or you are and it could take a few minutes for it all to piece back together. Helping during generalised seizures: •  Make sure the casualty is safe, ease them to   the ground if they are on a chair. •  Protect their head without restraining them. •  Make a note of the time that the seizure   started and of the different phases – be as   detailed as you can as this is extremely useful   to the medical team when investigating   causes and instigating treatment. Specific   information as to whether one side of the   body is more affected than the other etc. can   help with diagnosis. •  Loosen any tight clothes. •  Remove any objects against which they could   hurt themselves. •  Ask any bystanders to move away. •  Once the seizure has stopped, check the   airway and breathing and put them in the   recovery position if they’re unresponsive. Phone for an ambulance if: •  it is their first seizure •  the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes •  they have another seizure soon after the first •  they are injured •  their breathing does not appear ‘normal’ after   the seizure •  they are known to have seizures and this one   is different •  they are unresponsive for more than 5   minutes after the seizure •  you are worried for any reason Never: •  put your fingers or anything in their mouth to   try and prevent them biting their tongue –   this could cause serious injury •  try and move them, unless they are in   immediate danger •  restrain their movements whilst they are fitting •  give them anything to eat and drink until   fully recovered •  try and ‘bring them round’ If the casualty is conscious during the seizure, it is most important to ensure their safety and to reassure and support them.

revival fills the gap in children’s oral care

With a cute cosmetic overhaul and a complete reformulation, Australian natural toothpaste brand Jack N’ Jill is back on the dental-care radar and conquering the children’s market with its natural oral care range, which can now be found in more than 35 countries around the world. Originally established in the 1940s, the Jack N’ Jill brand was a household name and is fondly remembered by the many Aussie kids raised in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Today, the family business has been revived by Melbourne-based couple Rachel and Justin Bernhaut, who, after their own personal light bulb moment, realised the product is still very relevant for today’s health-conscious parents. “The birth of our two children saw us question what our kids came into contact with on a daily basis and we knew other parents were also looking for more natural personal care options for their families,” Justin said. “We quickly realised there were limited natural alternatives to the traditional toothpaste formulations available. Living in New York, and increasingly conscious about the well being of our children and the environment, we knew there was a market for Jack N’ Jill. With that in mind we decided to go back to my roots and revamp a brand that had once been so loved in Australia.” Justin used his pharmaceutical background to make the first 50,000 tubes of toothpaste by hand using the original machinery inherited from his family. The rest, as they say, is history. Jack N’ Jill is now sold in more than 35 countries with the range incorporating toothpaste of various flavours; toothbrushes – both manual and electric; silicone finger brushes – perfect for cleaning

gums and first teeth; and rinse cups – all designed to make brushing fun and most importantly, safe for kids. All Jack N’ Jill products are made using only organic and natural ingredients with the packaging designed to be minimal, recyclable and BPA free. The toothbrushes even have handles produced from non-GMO corn starch, which are biodegradable and recyclable. In an age where people are increasingly looking to make the switch from chemical-laden products to more sustainable substitutes, Jack N’ Jill offers parents a choice and a natural alternative to their children’s oral care. “We know that teeth-brushing can often be a hard task with kids and our range aims to make the process easier by using cute graphics, fruit-flavoured ingredients and music to keep both parents and children happy.” More importantly it’s safe, as children have a tendency to swallow toothpaste rather than spit it out. It is the only kids toothpaste brand recognised by the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Skin Deep researchers to have a danger score of ‘1’ – the safest rating possible. As the business continues to grow, the team has been looking at ways to expand the range with new products in the pipeline and are always investigating ways to further reduce its environmental footprint.

My Parenting Goals for 2017

Why? Parenting is the most important job in the world – but comes with the least amount of professional training. Most parents rely on friends, family or their sister for their best parenting advice. What if you were going in for heart surgery and the surgeon looked down at you and said, “I’m not a licensed physician and I’ve never been to medical school. But my dad was a doctor so I’m just going to call him and ask how I should operate on you.” You would be dumbfounded. We expect our doctors, teachers, pastors and even our hair dressers to be professionally trained and “with the times”. Why are we not expecting the same level of training and professionalism with parents? Be a coachable parent. Let parenting experts guide you through the most important job you will ever do. Your kids deserve it!

Limit media to 30 minutes each day. New year, New me, New parenting startegies because last year it just went to pot and I’d really like to be the perfect instagram mummy who never loses her S**t in 2017 . Ha! Who am I kidding but can’t harm to have a few goals to aim for. In a perfect world all of us would already be implementing all of these goals below. Statistics show that most parents are not. So read through this list of Parenting Goals and join me in embracing 1 or 2 that you can implement starting today – and keep this goal for the entire year. Hug your Kids Every day and Read more are my 2 and I will promise to try a few other’s but like you life is busy and I am not the perfect Instagram mum. I am just Mum. A normal Mum. Like you.

Banish fizzy, Juice drinks, Why? Sugary drinks single-handedly contribute to mass numbers of cancer, obesity, behavioral problems, cavities, ADHD, ADD, sleep disorders…and the list goes on. If you make the simple dietary change for your family in 2017 to kick the sugary drinks (and stick to water as your drink of choice), you will make tremendous positive changes for your family. And don’t be fooled by diet drinks. They are equally as unhealthy as the others.

Learn to calm yourself down before you discipline your children.

Hug your kids every day. Remember those bumper stickers from the ’80’s “Have You Hugged Your Kid Today”? In 2016 we need to plaster that sticker on our foreheads. Many kids are starving for emotional affection from their parents. So hug your kids every day. And don’t forget “I love you” a few times each week also!

We are all guilty of this, Instagram mum or not We all lose our temper, raise our voices and feel outraged at the things our kids do sometimes. We are human after all. One of the best parenting tips I ever learned was to take a deep breath, count to 10 and even walk away from my child when I feel like exploding, yelling or spanking. Nobody wins in a situation when tempers are flaring. A calm, cool, collected parent has a lot more positive influence than an upset parent.

Many studies show that more than 1 hour of screen time (TV, computers, cell phones, video games, tablets, etc…) contribute to sleep disorders, obesity, poor physical activity, No matter now much your kids try to convince you otherwise, your Play Station will never provide your kids equal physical or mental benefits to a bike ride, card game, jump rope or swimming pool.

Get your kids to bed 15 minutes earlier than you normally do. Why? Next to poor diet, lack of sleep is the biggest contributor to physical and mental health problems. Studies show that an extra 15 minutes of sleep in children increased their school grades, IQ scores and overall daily well-being.

Spend 20 minutes of one-on-one quality time with your kids every day: Go bike riding/walking, play a board game, make art, cook together, throw a ball…etc. Quality time is most child’s love language. Quality time is free. It only takes minutes to fill a child’s emotional tank. This is 100% a goal for me, I am always so busy I often forget to make some time for the ones I love the most. Sit down for dinner together is our goal.

75% of fathers don’t read to their children.

daddy

Plea se do the Voices By Charlie Swinbourne.

Every family has a bedtime routine, and we are no different. At around 6.15pm every night, it begins. Our daughters have their bath, brush their teeth, get their pyjamas on, and then, usually after a number of protests and appeals, they finally agree to settle into bed ready for my wife and I to read them their stories. Reading with them is really important to us. Our daughters are four and two years old, and because they’re both into different books, we swap who we read to every night. Martha, four, is currently into Horrid Henry tales. Meanwhile, Edie, two, loves The Tiger Who Came To Tea. Our evenings have been like this for nearly three years so, until recently, I thought reading to my girls every night was perfectly normal – that all dads do it. But it turns out I am in the minority, because according to Booktrust, only one in eight fathers reads with his children. Its statistics show that in 25 per cent of cases, this is because fathers work late, and I must confess, the fact that I work from home makes my nightly commitment to telling tales a lot easier. But what about the other 75 per cent? Interviews showed that one of the main reasons some fathers don’t read with their kids is because they see reading as a female – the mother’s – domain. These findings are worrying, because fathers reading with their children has been proven to boost academic success, and leads to improved social and emotional wellbeing. Booktrust is running a campaign called Get Dads Reading as a result. So what do I see as the benefits of reading with my kids? First, after all the playful chaos of the day, I find reading with my girls a special, calm time. Because I read with them one-to-one, it’s a rare occasion when they have my full focus, and I have theirs, without any of life’s distractions.

70 l Jan/Feb 2017 l

project-baby.co.uk

Stories also give my girls their first stepping stones to understanding the world outside our home. We learn about the human condition through stories, and it’s no less true for children. By stealth, stories place them in other people’s shoes, and help them empathise with others – even it’s just a frightened mouse trying to survive the attentions of the Gruffalo! As well as teaching them about the wider world, reading to my children has taught them about me, and me about them. Through our nightly routine, I know what my girls find funny or sad. I find out what they don’t know and get the chance to explain words and concepts to them as we go along. You could say reading to them helps me see things through their eyes. Because I’ve read with them, I find I can explain other areas of life more easily. When I told them recently about a relative who is moving house to get more room, I only had to reference Julia Donaldson’s book A Squash And A Squeeze to help them understand. There are so many good reasons for fathers to read with their children. For me, the biggest of all is that it’s made us closer. That’s something that can’t be bought – it comes from the time we spend day in, day out, travelling to magical worlds together.

Inspired by the author’s own experience, The Good Guy is a story of marriage, selfdeception and the pressure to conform in Sixties suburban New England. Set during a time when America was on the cusp of a sexual revolution, the novel examines life under scrutiny in the ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ era. Ted, a car-tyre salesman in 1960s suburban New England, is a dreamer who craves admiration. His wife, Abigail, longs for a life of the mind. Single-girl Penny just wants to be loved. When a chance encounter brings Ted and Penny together, he becomes enamoured and begins inventing a whole new life with her at its centre. But when this fantasy collides with reality, the fallout threatens everything, and everyone, he holds dear. The Good Guy is a deeply compelling debut about love, marriage and what happens when good intentions and self-deception are taken to extremes.

The Versions of Us - Laura Barnett Similar to the film Sliding Doors, this novel explores the small moments when our lives could have turned out entirely differently. A love story told three ways, the novel - set in 1958 - follows Cambridge students Eva and Jim, and Eva’s lover, David.

Diddi Dance

rugbytots Rugbytots is the first of its kind; a specifically designed play programme using the multiple skills of Rugby to create a fun and enjoyable environment whilst developing basic core motor skills.

Water Babies is the UK’s leading baby swim school, teaching a core skill to hundreds of babies & children every week. The courses are very different to traditional swimming lessons. For a start, because they only use warm water pools, babies can join them from birth. And while the emphasis is on having fun, their course is carefully structured, with progressive lesson plans for each week. www.waterbabies.co.uk

At Diddi Dance they realise and encourage endless enthusiasm and energy in an action packed, full of fun 45 minute dance class. Using various dancing games and exercises, bells, hoops and dance ribbons to their own funky pop songs so your little one not only improves their rhythm and co-ordination but also their social and gross motor skills. Classes are ideally suited for both boys and girls between 2-4 years old, however they have had children as young as 16 months.

All Rugbytots lead coaches are paediatric first aiders, Rugby qualified coaches, CRB checked and trained to a very high standard to ensure your children enjoy their time at Rugbytots in a safe and organised environment.
