If your reading this then you may well be pregnant ... Or maybe your baby is already here... Either way, congratulations and welcome to parenthood! Welcome to a very exciting edition of Project Baby. As you read this we would have attended the Baby to Toddler show as the official media sponsor. A very exciting step for our family run magazine! Perhaps you are one of the thousands of new parents we met over the course of the weekend at London Excel? We are delighted to share with you our winners of the very first Project Baby awards. Deciding the winners was no easy task with so many unique entries, so we say a massive congratulations to all our finalists! Turn to page 37 to find out who won what. We talk CPR with Emma Hammett, what could be more important than knowing how to save your son or daughters life. (page 52) With so many parents up and down the country suffering from sleep deprivation Pampers show us why finding the right nappy is so important and shouldn’t be the reason for your baby waking throughout the night. Jo Tantum talks us through her top sleeping tips on page 31, so you can also enjoy the perfect night sleep. Finally, If you’re looking for the perfect Christmas feel good show, check out our Mamma Mia review on page 47, it will have you singing and dancing in your seat. Wishing you a fabulous festive season.... I’m off to enjoy a Chestnut Praline Latte and a slice of Ginger cake.

Super ways to

Enjoy Your Maternity Leave

7 L

Learning to enjoy maternity leave isn’t easy for everyone. We’ve narrowed down some tips and tricks from the pros about how to make your time off count. There’s more to maternity leave than changing nappies and watching Jeremy Kyle. Make it a special time for you and your baby

Prearrange at Least Three Days of Help Line up your help, and play to each person’s strengths. For example, your mother might be great at grocery shopping and cooking, but virtually useless when it comes to waking up at night for a feeding. Your friend might be great at entertaining you with “Sex and the City” DVDs and keeping you company when you get lonely, but be hopeless at diaper changes. Getting help early makes it a lot more likely that you’ll feel energized and ready to have fun later on.

Accept the first weeks will be hard Those first few weeks with a newborn are a shock to everyone’s system. You’re getting used to being a sleep-deprived, milk-leaking mom; your baby is adjusting to living outside the warm comfort of your womb; and your husband is adjusting to being a dad.

This is not the time to pressure yourself into running around being social or productive. Simply walking around the block can feel like a major accomplishment. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t make plans; just make sure the fun is on your terms and works for you. That cute little bistro where you and your best buddy used to brunch may be too cramped for a stroller.

Test Gear

Mums-to-be Bucket List 1. Eat the entire confectionery contents of a corner shop. 2. Go to the cinema, loads. 3. Get a completely useless, expensive beauty treatment. 4. Treat yourself to a beautiful, very small, impractical bag.

I lived in fear of the BabyBjorn. Never mind that it’s hands down the most convenient way to carry a newborn. There are so many straps and buckles, I was afraid I was going to hang myself or that the baby would slip out through a leg hole onto the road. The lesson: Try out the gear you fear before you have the baby so you’ll have the hang of using it by the time he’s arrived. Return any stuff you don’t like before you break it or baby spits up on it, whichever comes first.

me time Allow yourself some ‘me’ time Try to give yourself some down time between leaving work and the baby’s arrival.

Ideally, you’ll have finished your baby shopping and can concentrate on the important things like sleeping, reading and watching Mad Men – those simple pleasures that are soon to become precious luxuries. Oh and triple checking you’ve packed your hospital bag. Make the most of your baby nap gap. Forget Facebook and Homes Under The Hammer – use your baby’s nap times to do something constructive. Whether it’s writing that novel, researching your amazing business idea or teaching yourself how to knit, maternity leave is the perfect time to let your creative juices flow.

Spend the day in your PJs Why? Because a) you can and b) you deserve it!

5. Take a day trip ALONE. Make Mummy Friends Brand-new parenthood can be lonely, especially after your help has departed and you’re facing time alone with a helpless baby. So if you see another pregnant woman at Starbucks every day, strike up a conversation.

Will You Go to Work or Stay Home? Another vital issue when it comes to choosing new mommy friends is whether you’re planning to go back to work or stay home. Here’s the problem: If you’re going to stay at home, no matter how much you bond with the working types, you’re not going to see each other much once leave is over. So it’s best to find a mix of both mums you’ll see at the playground every day, and mums you can walk with on weekends. Working mums can really benefit from friendships with other working mums because they often have the same schedule and experience similar issues.

How can Acupuncture help with Fertility?

Alison Fletcher Acupuncture

I knew I was Pregnant when..... Sometimes you know before you even see that blue line. Some mums tell us the moment they realised they were pregnant. Liz Mills Says:- “I sneezed all day” My first pregnancy came on our fifth round of IVF, and In the two-week wait after having the embryos transferred i kept sneezing. So, when we tried IVF again for the second pregnancy, I was beyond excited when I started sneezing daily again- it was my telltale sign.

Acupuncturists aim to rebalance your energy flow and prime your body for fertility. The British Acupuncture Council believes acupuncture may boost female fertility by doing three key things: •  Regulating hormone function •  Increasing blood flow to the ovaries and    uterus and helping to relax your muscles    which can improve the chance of an   embryo implanting. •  Tackling the causes of polycystic ovary    syndrome (PCOS) – a common cause of   infertility •  Generally helping to relieve stress and make    you feel more relaxed

Acupuncture during fertility treatment. Acupuncture is such a popular treatment for infertility, some IVF clinics have acupuncturists working in their clinics, or they’re keen to refer you to a local trusted practitioner. As the research swings both ways, and the treatment itself is harmless, it’s generally accepted that acupuncture for fertility could be worth trying if you’re looking to increase your chances of success.

Cesarean Section

Q&A

Having a cesarean section was the last thing I wanted. But I had no choice. When my baby’s heart rate slowed and I had failed to progress after 17 hours of labor, I was whisked into the operating room. My experience isn’t unusual. Nearly one-third (32.8%) of all U.S. babies are now delivered by C-section, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. What’s propelling the trend? For one, fewer women who’ve already had a C-section are having vaginal births, known as VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean delivery). Technology is also a factor. With the advent of fetal heart rate monitoring during labor, obstetricians can see whether a baby is in distress, says maternal-fetal health expert Yoram Sorokin, MD. Doctors can also use ultrasound in the last weeks of pregnancy to predict whether a baby is too big to fit through the pelvis. And while vaginal births were once the norm for breech babies, most doctors now think they’re too risky. Whether you have a scheduled C-section or an emergency one, educating yourself will make the experience easier.

C-Sections carry the same risks that are associated with any significant surgery.

pregnancy

Q: What are the most common reasons that I’d need a C-section? Your doctor may schedule you for the surgery if you’re carrying multiples, or if your baby is breech, very large or has been diagnosed in utero with a birth defect or a placental abnormality. Many ob-gyns recommend C-sections if you’ve had pregnancy complications such as severe preeclampsia or if you’ve had a previous C-section. You might need to undergo an emergency C-section if, during labor, your baby shows signs of distress (such as elevated heart rate), your labor fails to progress or if you are running a fever.

Q: DOES C-section pose any major risks to my health? A;-:Doctors say it carries the same risks that are associated with any significant surgery: internal bleeding that may require a blood transfusion; surgical injuries to the bowel, bladder and other internal organs; blood clots; or uterine damage or infection.

Q: Is a C-section safer for my baby than a vaginal birth? A:“If there is real failure to progress with labor, or if the baby’s heart rate is a cause for concern, then it’s safer to have a C-section,” says ob-gyn Elena M. Kamel, MD. Still, there are risks. “Babies who are born by C-section have a higher incidence of respiratory problems, possibly because they don’t pass through the birth canal and so they miss out on the squeezing action that helps clear their lungs of amniotic fluid,” she says.

Q: Can I choose a C-section if I’m scared of labor?

Q: Is vaginal birth after C-section (VBAC) safe?

A: Though more women are scheduling elective C-sections, experts advise against it if it’s just to avoid labor pain. “A vaginal birth is safer for the mom and baby when possible, because there is a much faster recovery time and it’s best to avoid major surgery,” says Dr. Kamel.

A: A 2001 study found the risk of uterine rupture — a potentially life-threatening tear in the uterus — during VBAC to be higher than previously thought, so fewer doctors are now performing VBACs.

Q: Is a C-section automatic if you’re having multiples? A:It depends on how the babies are positioned in your uterus. “If the first baby’s head is positioned down toward the vagina, you could try a vaginal delivery with twins or triplets,” says ob-gyn John Larsen, MD. The need for C-sections for multiples depends on the first baby’s head position.

If your doctor offers them, evaluate your risk factors before making a decision, Dr. Larsen urges. Women who aren’t induced, have had only one C-section and are at least 18 months past their previous delivery have the lowest risk of rupture. With a VBAC, there’s also a small chance (five to ten babies per 10,000 each year) of brain damage or death to the baby. “Besides a faster recovery time, VBAC is something to consider if you’re having your second child and want to have more,” Dr. Larsen says. With multiple C-sections, surgery gets more difficult, and there’s an increased risk of chronic pelvic abdominal pain and numbness developing at the incision site.

C-Section Surgery Specifics After your lower abdominal area is cleaned and shaved, you’re given IV fluids and spinal anesthesia to numb you from the chest down. A drape is set up in front of your chest so that you can’t see anything. The doctor makes a four-inch horizontal incision just above your pubic bone, and then another incision into the uterine muscle itself. “Then we extend that opening either with scissors or our fingers and put the baby out,” says Michele R. Lauria, MD, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The placenta is removed then too. To close the incision, some doctors sew up the uterus while it’s in the abdomen; others pull the uterus out. Mums usually get to hold the baby within an hour of delivery.

Q:Does the surgery or the recovery hurt? A: Although you’re usually awake during a C-section, spinal anesthesia will ensure you’ll be completely numb and pain-free from the chest down. Expect to be sore after surgery. You may be given an intravenous narcotic pain reliever for 24 hours. You’ll likely be in the hospital for three days, and you’ll have to take it easy for several weeks while your incision heals. After six to eight weeks, you can probably go back to work. After three months, you can play tennis. project-baby.co.uk project-baby.co.ukl NOV/DEC l nov/dec 2016 l

Work or a family? Or Both? This is a question Beth Follini from Ticktock Coaching gets a lot. She’s a life coach who helps women decide whether or not they want children. “If work is your passion and you don’t have a strong desire to have a child, do you have to give up your life’s work for motherhood? My job is to show people their choices – it might be difficult but they can make it work.” Follini asks clients to identify senior female role models in their industry and analyse how they manage career and children. She also cautions against caring too much about what everyone else says or does. Since becoming a mother I know I’ve been guilty of urging friends wavering on the issue of parenthood to go for it – I love it, so they will, right? But doing it before you are ready could cause resentment towards your new lifestyle, partner and baby. “I would never tell people to just do it,” says Follini. “Women can feel overwhelmed by everyone else’s opinion. Listen to your own voice and feel confident in it.”

Eat Yourself Pregnant In this fabulous new full-colour cook-book Zita shows you 80 tasty and easy to prepare recipes that are packed full of all the most important nutrients your body needs to prepare for a successful pregnancy.

I had no inkling as to how much becoming a mother would change my life. Four years ago, I had a glamorous senior job on a fashion magazine in London, I travelled extensively, I went to parties with the A-list, I wore Louboutins. Now I have two small children, I work freelance three days a week, and you’re more likely to find me on a bouncy castle in my Converse. My life in 2012 is not better or worse than my life in 2008, it’s just different. You find a way to make motherhood work for you; you get on with it. I didn’t ever get the corner office in New York, but I still visit on work trips. I’m toying with Glastonbury sans enfants next summer, just like the good old days (but I’ll have to go to bed earlier).

My advice? Ditch the pre-baby bucket list. Don’t do it unless you feel ready but don’t ever expect to feel completely ready. And if that thin blue line comes out of the blue? If you find out, unexpectedly, that you’re pregnant? Take a deep breath, take 100 deep breaths if you need to, and don’t panic. I promise that you’ll make it work, if you want to, like you always do. Your life will change, but you won’t.

4. Easy Pose Meditation

Top

10Prenatal Yoga Positions 1. Dog Pose

Kneel in "table position," with knees under hips and arms beneath shoulders. Back is straight, head faces forward. Inhale and raise head and tailbone, letting your belly drop toward the floor. Curve your back in a swayback position. Eyes gaze upward. Take care not to overextend the neck or over arch the back. Alternate between dog and the following cat pose several times, inhaling and exhaling deeply.

2. Cat Pose

Kneel in “table position, with knees under hips and arms beneath shoulders. Back is straight, head faces forward. Exhale and drop head and tailbone. Arch your back, exhaling further. Tighten buttocks and abdominal muscles. Alternate between dog and cat several times, inhaling and exhaling deeply.

Benefits: - Strengthens and relaxes the lower back Increases suppleness along the spine - Improves circulation - Stretches muscles along the back, neck, and arms.

Sit in any comfortable position. 1. Arms are by your sides or folded in lap, shoulders down and away from ears. Close your eyes, breathe deeply. 2. Inhale and exhale deeply as you repeat: Meditation: I become aware of the muscles that support me as I sit. 3. Exhale and scan your body, acknowledging those muscles and the good work they do. 4. Inhale and repeat silently. 5. Exhale, allowing those muscles to relax completely. Breathe deeply several times as you continue to relax and let go. Benefits: - Relaxes the muscles Brings you back to the present moment - Slows the mind Reduces blood pressure and heart rate - Calms the entire being, promoting peace and serenity.

3. Easy Bridge Pose 1. Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor and close to your buttocks. 2. Arms are by your sides. 3. Start by pressing your lower back into the floor so that the tailbone lifts up and away from the floor. Gradually lift the lower back from the floor, one vertebra at a time, until you are resting on your middle or upper back. Buttocks should be lifted a few inches from the floor. Weight should not be on your shoulders and neck. 4. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and begin to slowly lower the back from the upper portion one vertebra at a time. Visualize the spine unrolling. Relax with the legs outstretched or hug the knees gently to the body.

Benefits: - Increases flexibility in the back and shoulders - Stretches and releases tension in the neck - Strengthens leg muscles. As long as comfort allows, women in the second trimester may also do this pose. Note: When getting up from a back-lying position, turn to your left or right side first and gradually work up to a sitting or kneeling position. This avoids any straining or dizziness.

5. Modified Bellows Breath Exhale completely as you tuck chin and tailbone, round your back, and bend at the waist and knees. Hands rest on thighs. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

8. Knee Rocking

1. Sit on a mat with legs bent to the right of the body. If necessary, lean against a wall to support the back. 2. Inhale and raise arms up; interlace fingers over your head. Upper arms are alongside the ears. 3. Gently curve your body to the right as you exhale slowly. 4. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and breathe deeply. 5. Inhale and return to an upright position. Lower arms, rest, and breathe normally. 6. Move legs to the left side and repeat by curving to the left.

1. Sit in a cross-legged position with your left leg on top. If necessary, lean against a wall to support your back (see Healthy Sitting). 2. Cradling the left leg with both arms, lift it toward your chest and abdomen as far you comfortably can. 3. Keeping your back straight, hold the leg as high and close to you as possible without straining. 4. Moving from the hip joint, gently rock the leg back and forth as though rocking a baby. 5. After rocking one leg several times, switch leg position and repeat with other leg.

Benefits: - Tones and strengthens muscles along the sides of the body - Aids digestion Increases flexibility of the spine.

7. Firm Pose Sitting Position 1. Kneel on a mat with a cushion or folded blanket between your legs. You may need to lean forward slightly to avoid losing your balance. Tops of feet are flat against the floor, pointing straight back. 2. Supporting yourself with your hands, slowly and carefully lower your buttocks between your heels onto the cushion. 3. If you feel any discomfort, adjust the position of the feet or add more height to the cushion. 4. Hands may be placed behind you for support or may rest on thighs. Chest is lifted. Do not sit in Firm Pose if you have symptomatic (i.e., painful, throbbing) varicose veins.

9. Tension-Relieving Breathing Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, arms held in front of you, palms together at chest height. Shoulders are down and away from the ears. Open mouth and inhale as you stretch your arms to a T position. Lift your chin.

Benefits: - Opens the chest and lungs Relieves tension in the spine - Promotes a sense of well-being and fulfillment

Benefits: - Helps alleviate discomfort in the hip joints caused by your growing baby’s pressure on the nerves and joints in the hip area, buttocks, and thighs.

10. Hands-to-Wall Pose

1. Slowly bend the elbows so that gradually and with control, your upper body moves toward the wall as you slowly exhale. 2. Bring your face as close to the wall as you comfortably can. The body remains straight. Do not bend at the waist or knees. 3. Hold for a few moments, breathing normally. 4. Inhale and slowly push away from the wall until your arms are straight and your body is erect. Lower your arms. Relax and breathe normally. Repeat 2 to 3 times. Second part: 1. Stand erect with arms extended in front of you, palms against a wall. Place the body so you are at arm’s length from the wall, leaning at a slight angle. 2. Fingers of both hands point toward each other, touching but not overlapping. 3. Shoulders are relaxed, feet flat on the floor. Buttocks are tucked to prevent lower back from arching.

Benefits: This two-part pose tones and strengthens the muscles of the upper chest to better support enlarging breasts. It also strengthens the arms and wrists. 30 l Nov/Dec Nov/dec 2016 l

Pampers give parents the perfect night sleep A wet nappy should no longer be the excuse of a waking baby.

Parents all over the country know how essential a good nights sleep is. When you’re up all hours of the night with a new baby it can be extremely challenging resulting in a huge knock on effect to your days as well as nights. It can be hard juggling your many tasks as a mum, but staying fit should never be a task that is put on the back burner. Use the following tips to make staying fit easier to work into your busy lifestyle.

Bounce Fit Body

Great workout 700+ calories burnt per class 3 times more effective

1. Walk It Out While driving may be the quicker option in most situations, walking is the healthier option. If you’re running a quick errand, try to walk or even bike there instead of driving. Not only can you feel great about getting exercise, you are helping the environment at the same time.

2. Exercise with the Kids Find ways to include your children in your workouts. This is a great way to show your children that exercising is fun.

3. Sweep That Fat Away Cleaning is something that you will always have to do and is often an excuse busy mums use to get out of exercising. However, you can turn your daily chores into a workout. Do your chores with more energy or turn on your favorite music and dance while you clean.

4. Canned Goods For Weight Lifting No need to spend a ton of money buying weights, just use everyday household items. When you’re making cereal for your children do a few curls with that gallon of milk.

5. Get Fit in the Office Workdays are full of opportunities to get active. Try taking the stairs instead of the lift, stretching at your desk and go outdoors for lunch. Not only are you taking the proper steps to live a healthier lifestyle.

Fun . Friendly . Fierce 10 minutes at ((BOUNCE))™ is the same as a 30 minute run - plus the whole point of jumping on a trampoline is to have fun! There’s oodles of scientific research on the benefits, but most notably, NASA calls it “The most effective exercise yet devised by man” due to the extra gravitational force that the trampoline pad adds. The 1 hour class features the first 40 mins of choreographed dance-cardio jumping routines to burn calories fast and finishes with 20 minutes of muscle toning concentrating on abs, legs, triceps and glutes. A focus on ‘interval training’ provides short breaks throughout the class to programme the body to burn calories at rest. It’s fun, friendly and fierce with one requirement: you can’t jump without a smile! Sessions where kids of any age can attend in the studio while you workout. Toys, food, prams etc are all welcome with no pretentiousness to deal with! Some mums stop to breastfeed, others are managing potty runs or just needing to give cuddles in between jumping along. There’s likely to be a tantrum or two, or sharing your trampoline with your little one – the Instructor just carries on, no-one minds! You don’t have to be a mum to come along, the workout is still the same!

Real Life “For my last birth, my third, I started having contractions at noon. When I went to the doctor at 6pm, she said I was 1cm and sent me home. At 8:53 we left our house (once our babysitter got there to watch our other kids). I walked into hospital, was brought up to L&D . . . and my water broke in the bathroom. They rushed me to the table and my baby girl was born at 9:14pm, just 21 minutes after leaving our house. No doctor in the room (the nurse caught her). I wasn’t hooked up to any machines. Thankfully, we were all set to deliver at the nearest hospital or else I’d be one of those stories on the news where the mum gives birth in the car.”

Birth Stories

A Mother’s Day reminiscence “ ‘Just one more time’ . . . I begged my husband to let us try this experimental procedure called in-vitro fertilization just one more time. Twenty-three years ago, the number of successful IVF births was measured in the hundreds and the number of babies born using frozen embryos could be counted on one hand. Meet my daughter, Jamie, the product of my ‘one more time’ plea, the fourth baby born in the Delaware Valley by in-vitro fertilization using a frozen embryo. After three ectopic pregnancies, multiple miscarriages and many failed in-vitro attempts, Jamie was not only a medical miracle but a miracle to my husband and me.” - Carrie W.

“Thirteen years ago I found out I was having twins. I am a twin, and I always complained to my poor mum that I had to share everything, even my birthday. Well, my girls had a plan of their own. First they surprised us 11 weeks early, and then when one decided it was time to meet the world, the other decided she liked the newly created space and hung out for another 15 hours. Because of this my girls each have their own birthday. I knew I was a mum because I was so happy about this, regardless of the extra time and pain. And today they have a great birthday story to tell.”

- Colleen G. “After giving birth the nurse came into our room to say I needed to get some rest and she was going to take my daughter so I could sleep. I said, ‘Don’t even think about taking her . . . I’ve waited all my life for this day. I can sleep any other time.’ It was my Christmas day in June.”

- Mapi V.

“I knew the moment I became a mum even before I gave birth to my son. I broke my ankle and had surgery (without being put under) when I was six months pregnant. I was not able to walk till about four to five weeks after I delivered, and the only thing I thought about the whole time was making sure my baby was safe. I then had complications with the pregnancy and had to have an emergency C-section. Once again, I didn’t care what happened to me — I just wanted to make sure my baby boy was going to be OK.”

- Jennifer P.

“With 17 inches of still-falling snow on the ground, we drove to the hospital at 11pm in a low-riding Honda coupe. We had to stop at every intersection to dig it out.” - Una M.

Pregnancy

Hair Loss

After Delivery It is normal for women to develop lustrous and thick hair during pregnancy. Most of the time, women will be thrilled with their hair while they are pregnant as the only problem is usually a little bit of dryness that can be easily fixed. After this, the changes to your hair after delivery can be a bit of a shock. It is normal to have hair loss after delivery and it isn’t usually a cause for alarm. The hair loss after labor is usually defined as the sudden loss of hair that mothers go through about three to six months after giving birth. A lot of new mums get a shock when they realize that for a few months after they give birth they are shedding more hair than they normally do. Despite this, it is not a concern and is completely normal. Most of the time, your hair will be normal again by the time your child turns one. The hair loss is due to the process of hair growth. Most of the time somewhere between 85 and 95 percent of your hair will be growing while the rest (5 to 15 percent) keeps the same. Hair then falls out at the end of the resting stage, usually when you are washing it or brushing it out, and new growth will take its place. It is normal for a woman to lose around 100 hairs each day.

Top Tip - Do not shampoo too much. To keep the shedding to a minimum, try to be extra-gentle with your hair. Don’t shampoo your hair more often than necessary and when you do, always opt for a quality conditioner. Try to avoid these treatments until your hair is no longer shedding and this includes straightening, perming, and highlighting. You should also do your best to not use hot styling tools such as flat irons, curling irons, or blow-dryers until after the shedding stops.

36 l Nov/dec 2016 l

project-baby.co.uk

Call the Doctor Let your doctor know if you feel your hair shedding is excessive. In some rare cases, it may indicate postpartum thyroiditis if it goes along with other symptoms. Get enough Vitamins. Make sure that you eat well and get enough vitamins by taking your favorite prenatal vitamin supplement. This will help maintain your hair’s health.

That process changes slightly during pregnancy, however. That is because estrogen levels rise and this increases the length of your hair’s growing stage. This means that fewer of your hairs will be in the resting stage so that less will fall out, leaving you with locks that are thicker and more luxuriant.

After you give birth, your estrogen levels will begin to drop back down to normal and this means that more of your hair follicles will go into the resting stage. That in turn means that you will seem to be losing a lot more hair when brushing or washing your hair. The good news is that this post-pregnancy shedding tapers off and your hair will eventually get back to the thickness it was before your pregnancy. Most of the time, this process will take six to twelve months after you give birth. If you haven’t noticed any dramatic changes with your hair throughout pregnancy or after birth, you are not alone. Not everyone will notice huge changes and it is more common for those with longer hair to notice them.

Review

Mamma Mia

The Musical Featuring all the best loved songs of supergroup Abba, Mamma Mia! at the Novello Theatre is the is still one of the best feel good nights out in London. Set on a sunny Greek island, Mamma Mia! is the story of Sophie who, on the eve of her wedding seeks to try and find the father she has never known by bringing together three men from her mother’s distant past, back to the island they last visited 20 years ago!

When we were invited to see Mamma Mia at the Novell Theatre last week I was super excited. I grew up in an all girls house, singing along to ABBA was just the norm in our house hold. So when this opportunity arose I knew I had to take the girls and pray they enjoed it just as much as I knew I would. Well we weren’t disappointed and what a spectacular show it was, ABBA is such classic there’s no denying that. There were people from ages 5 to 95, and all were singing and dancing. You could’t help but sing along and have a smile from ear to ear.

places but he is at that age...

When we told the girls we were taking them to the theatre Anna (7) and Dionne (9) they were jumping up and down with excitment, but would it really live up to everything they were expecting? It was everything and more than they could have ever dreamed off.The girls absolutley loved it from start to finish they were totally mesmorised and points you found yourself lifting their chins off the floor. Henry (11) on the other hand loved the singing and dancing but did say it was very mushy in

Elaine from Windsor had this to say to us after the show:- This was our second time to this musical & it hasn’t lost any of its charm. Great songs (of course), wonderful performers, simple but enjoyable storyline, funny, & just so uplifting. You really do walk out of the theatre with a big smile on your face singing Dancing Queen! I loved the ‘party’ ending where all of the cast come on stage & the audience stand up & sing & dance along. A fantastic show & not to be missed!

The whole journey home the girls were reliving the songs and resighting the dance moves. It sure is a feel good musical, you leave feeling like you want to just break out into song and dance but realise that in the middle of Victoria station it maybe slightly inappropriate. We got chatting to a lovely couple sat in the row behind us and asked them after the show what they thought of the Musical and how they would rate it. Heres what they had to say:

Book your tickets today: www.mamma-mia.com

Sandra from Leeds Said :- What a brilliant show. We laughed from beginning to end Everyone leaving the show was laughing and singing. Brilliant atmosphere

First Aid

Basic Steps to

CPR

What to do if your Baby Stops Breathing Having to resuscitate your child is every parent’s worst nightmare, but how would you feel if you didn’t know how to help? You are far more likely to need to resuscitate an adult than a baby – but here is a step by step guide to help just in case: Danger (is it safe?) Response (do they respond at all if you speak to them or scrape the bottom of their foot?) Airway – is their airway clear? Tilt their head and lift their chin to clear their airway, as their tongue may have flopped down and blocked it.

Tilt the head and lift the chin to horizontal

52 l NOV/DEC Nov/dec2015/16 dEC/JAN 2016 l project-baby.co.uk l project-baby.co.uk

Breathing – To check for breathing - Carefully tilt the head and lift the chin to a horizontal position to lift the tongue from their airway. check for breathing; by looking down their chest, listening for breathing and feeling with your hand for the rise and fall of their abdomen or their breath on your cheek.

Look, listen and feel to check for breathing If not breathing give 5 rescue breaths

First Aid

If you are not absolutely sure whether or not they are breathing, you will need to start CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) Start with 5 rescue breaths to top up the oxygen in their blood. Babies and children are more likely to have experienced a breathing problem rather than a heart problem and babies and children do not retain oxygenated blood in their system as an adult does. •  Seal your mouth around their mouth and nose (if you can fit your mouth over both) and blow into them gently with a puff of your cheeks. A baby’s lungs are about the size of a tea bag, so a gentle blow should be sufficient to inflate their chest.

Keep going - You are being a life support machine and keeping them alive. When you push on the chest - you are being the heart When you breathe into them – you are being the lungs

If you are on your own, you should perform 1 minute’s CPR before phoning for an ambulance (5 breaths, 30:2, 30:2 is about a minute).

Do not expect them to come back to life until the paramedics are there to help. For a child over the age of one; you would do exactly the same. However, you can tilt their head a little further back to open their airway, breathe into them a little harder and you would use the heel of your hand, rather than 2 fingers to push down on their chest.

If you would like a free copy of the poster below please email emma@firstaidforlife.org.uk www.firstaidforlife.org.uk

•  Make sure their chest rises each time – if it doesn’t, you probably haven’t opened the airway sufficiently – tilt it a little further but DO NOT OVER EXTEND THEIR NECK and try again. •  If they start to gurgle when you breathe into them, you will need to briefly turn them onto their side and empty the vomit from their mouth, before continuing with the breaths.

You will then need to circulate the oxygenated blood by pushing down hard and fast on their chest with two fingers or thumbs. •  Push hard and fast on the centre of their chest – roughly between the nipples •  Push down by a third of the depth of their chest – with two thumbs or fingers •  At a rate of 110 -120 beats per minute – roughly 2 per second

After about 30 compressions…you will need to give them 2 more short sharp breaths and then continue with the compressions again. 30:2:30:2:30:2…

5to Outsmart Waysyour Toddler The battle lines were drawn: It was me against him. And my 2-year-old was a formidable opponent. I lay in wait by the stairs, a pair of size-2T sweatpants clutched to my chest. Suddenly, my slippery little boy popped up from behind the relative safety of the sofa. Our eyes met. He squealed and bolted for the kitchen. Game on! Somehow, my master’s degree in psychology had lulled me into the mistaken notion that motherhood would be a piece of cake. I knew the latest child-rearing theories. I’d handle behavior problems with finesse. Ha! Never did I envision how challenging raising a stubborn and feisty toddler would be. Thankfully, I’ve now learned several great toddler-taming strategies that work quite well. Sometimes, I’ve found, you need to shelve the “I am the parent! Do as I say!” approach and try a little creative thinking!

56 l Nov/dec 2016 l

project-baby.co.uk

1. Act like an idiot “Even the most defiant toddler will take pity on us if we seem like total incompetents,” says Harvey Karp, MD, author of The Happiest Toddler on the Block. The trick is to convince your child that you should be helped, not resisted. •  Be forgetful. If she’s refusing to put away her toys, pick up a few and put them in an unexpected place, like the bathtub or a kitchen cabinet. When your child balks — she knows where things belong, even as young as 2 — innocently say, “What? I’m putting your toys in your toy box!” She’ll likely take pity on you and help you put her stuff where it really belongs. •  Be wrong. Next time you foresee a battle to get your toddler into the stroller, try squeezing into it yourself. Chances are good she’ll announce, “That’s mine!” Finally her possessive streak is good for something! •  Be incompetent. Put your coat on backward and place your shoes on your hands. Say, “I’m ready to go, are you?” She’ll laugh, straighten you out, and get her own shoes on for once. Don’t worry, your child won’t really think you’re a fool, says Dr. Karp. This is just a fun tactic, like playing hide-and-seek and pretending you can’t find her.

Development

2. Become a silverlining expert Pretend everything’s great. Your attitude, and the way you handle disappointments (big and small), can greatly affect how your child learns to do the same. Use positive language. The right words can lessen the blow of letdowns and make mundane tasks seem interesting and fun. For instance, the day 3-year-old Josh had been looking forward to going to the playground, it rained. Rather than let him sulk and stomp angrily around the house, his mum Sue said, “This rain is wonderful! Now we get a chance to have that indoor picnic I’ve been planning for you.” Josh was intrigued — an indoor picnic sounded at least as much fun as going to the playground. Turning disappointment into delight is part of the magic of being a parent.

3. Try reverse psychology You say “yes,” she says “no!” You say “no,” she says “yes!” This verbal tug-of-war is frustrating, but it’s actually a healthy declaration of her growing independence. There’s even an official name for this stage. “When your child doesn’t want to wear certain clothes or taste new foods, it’s called ‘the oppositionalism of toddlerhood,’” says Temple University’s Laurence Steinberg, PhD, author of The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting.

I refused to let her,” says her mum, Julie. But once Julie learned the “Yes, but...” trick, Amanda’s tantrums subsided. Instead of saying no all the time, Julie now says, “Yes, Amanda, you may go outside, but after dinner.” Or “Yes, you may ride your big wheel, but we need to wait for the rain to stop.” Toddlers are a lot more cooperative if they just know when they can do whatever it is they want. The younger your child, the less patience she’ll have to wait. So sidetrack her opposition by offering up another activity with your “Yes, but.” You could say, “Yes, you may have a cookie, but first we’re going to make dinner together.“

5. Stay a step ahead This is not a quick solution so much as a smart way of thinking. It comes down to consistent routines and reasonable expectations, so you don’t have to be a toddler mind reader. Most toddler battles are caused by hunger, fatigue or frustration, but it’s easier to recognise those things after a tantrum starts — and after a few slices of apple would have saved the day. Keeping your child on an even keel can be relatively simple: Try to make his basic needs — food, sleep — a priority, and not something you squeeze into a busy day. •  Put him down for a nap before he seems super tired. •  Feed him several small meals to keep up his blood sugar (and mood) level. •  Give him plenty of encouragement — he’ll be less inclined to flip out when something goes wrong or he doesn’t get his way. Think twice before you make life unnecessarily hard on him. If you’re thinking of braving the mall with a tired child — don’t. The notion “maybe I can just squeeze in one more errand” has been the downfall of many otherwise rational mums. Of course, if you have a toddler, you’ve already learned that life rarely goes as planned. So, here’s one last trick to try on yourself: Act as if you know what to do — and soon enough, you will!

The solution? If you want your child to do something, like put on her socks, pretend you don’t want her to do it. When I want Kevin, now 3, to get ready quickly, I pretend I’m in a big rush. “Me come, too?” he’ll ask. “No, honey, Mummy’s in a hurry today. Why don’t you stay here with Daddy instead?” My son, who always prefers an adventure to staying home, will dash off to the closet to get his shoes and jacket. When he returns, I say, “I’m not sure you can get ready in time to come with me.” That gets him to start hurriedly shoving his little arms into his jacket sleeves — and then I say, “Wow, you really can get ready quickly!” He beams with pride and allows me to finish zipping him up in record time. Say goodbye to the old captureKevin-and-yank-his-clothes-on-while-pinninghim-to-the-floor maneuver.

4. Say, “Yes, but....” Toddler Amanda loved playing outside. She’d press her nose against the screen door and plead to go out. “She’d throw a colossal fit if project-baby.co.uk

Winter Getaways Getaway with the family this winter

Winter Cabin Päijänne Tavastia Finland

This cosy, recently-restored cabin with sauna and own terrace is your base for days spent playing in the snow. Fully-equipped with wood burning stove, Cabin Ebba has everything you need for your winter holiday.

Lapland Northern Lapland

Tucked away in northern most Finland, deep inside the Arctic Circle, Santa Claus’ homeland is the stuff of fairytales. Cue snow-dusted forests that stretch for miles, cosy log cabins that look like they’ve been plucked from a storybook, and a population that’s made up of more reindeer than people. Lapland pulls out all the stops over the festive period, so there’s nowhere better to get in to the Christmas spirit. Story-telling around crackling fires, reindeer sleigh rides through the woods and, of course, meet-and-greets with Santa himself – they’re all on the agenda, Santa and his elves are just half the story. Lapland’s snowy countryside was made for exploring and, wherever you stay, winter sports like snowmobiling and skiing are as easy to come by as Christmassy activities. Each resort has got a different vibe, too, so whether you’re after an action-packed getaway or a relaxing retreat, you’ll find somewhere that suits. www.thomson.co.uk

5 Sleep Myths Every Parent Should Know Rice Cereal at Bedtime

Sleep Control

Myth: Adding rice cereal to a bedtime bottle helps babies sleep through the night.

Myth: You can control when and how long your newborn sleeps.

Reality: There’s no proof that this method has any impact on Baby’s sleep.

Reality: Newborn babies fall asleep when they’re ready and wake up when they’re hungry, wet, or upset or because of some other normal cue.

Dr. Adesman Explains: “In fact, it can even go the other way.

Dr. Adesman Explains: “The key word here is ‘newborn.’ A lot of

Introducing rice cereal too early can be unsafe. Babies might not be able to digest rice cereal before 4 months of age. Parents often try to rush the natural process and push the milestones, but this practice is really not recommended.”

parents will try to create a schedule, but when babies are very young, Mum and Dad really need to respond to Baby’s cues.”

Swaddling Realities Myth: Swaddling is an outdated method for comforting a fussy baby.

Baby’s Sleep Position

Reality: Swaddling, when done properly, can be an effective and soothing technique.

Myth: It’s OK to put your baby to sleep on his side.

Dr. Adesman Explains: “Swaddling is a very helpful technique when

Reality: To reduce the risk of sudden infant

it comes to comforting. Some parents worry about their baby overheating, but if she’s dressed properly, that’s not an issue. Positioning is important, so ask your pediatrician or someone experienced to show you the right technique.”

death syndrome, healthy babies should always be put to sleep on their back -- not their stomach or sides. Dr. Adesman Explains: “Part of the reason for the confusion is that when the government first came out with its ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign, it said side or back, but just a couple years later, it modified this recommendation because sometimes babies roll from their side onto their belly. The safest sleep position for babies is on their back. Unfortunately, some pediatricians are still giving parents misinformation.”

Nap = Soundly Sleeping Baby Myth: A nap in a car seat or stroller doesn’t count. Reality: If your child is sleeping soundly, it counts. Dr. Adesman Explains: “Kids are pretty versatile when it comes to where they sleep. If a baby falls asleep somewhere other than his crib, there’s really no reason to transfer him. Also, remember that although beautiful nurseries might be created with the best intentions, crib bumpers, mobiles, and other decorations can pose a safety risk to infants.” project-baby.co.uk

MILK strike!

74 l NOV/DEC Nov/dec 2016 l

project-baby.co.uk

Stopped breastfeeding or formula, some toddlers refuse cow’s milk.

DEVELOPMENT

Parents of milk-striking kids can breathe easier knowing their children do not have a condition, just a fussy palate. Taking a child off of breast milk or infant formula can be frustrating for moms, especially when their 1-year-old refuses to drink cow’s milk. “Realizing that it’s not as sweet as breast milk or formula, some children flat out reject cow’s milk,” says Eileen Tyrala, MD, a pediatrician and baby formula specialist at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. “The milk strike,” as some pediatricians call it, can even turn into a lifelong refusal to drink cow’s milk. The problem for a child who stops drinking either milk or formula is the potential for a vitamin D or calcium deficiency. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vitamin D plays a role in the prevention of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Both calcium and vitamin D are essential for building strong bones and muscles. Babies and younger children with inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake are at an increased risk for weaker bones and even rickets, says Dr. Tyrala.

What You Can Do There are two ways to solve this problem: coaxing the child into drinking cow’s milk or adding food or drinks to the child’s diet that contain vitamin D and calcium. To get your child to drink cow’s milk: • Mix whole milk with some formula or breast milk. • Add small amounts of strawberry or chocolate flavoring to milk. Dietitian Althea Zanecosky, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, cautions that it may take up to 10 attempts before a young child accepts a new food, including cow’s milk. She also warns not to give too large a serving. Four ounces is the appropriate milk serving for a 1-year-old.

If that does not work, try to substitute the following foods or drinks to gain calcium and vitamin D: • Try switching to almond, coconut, rice or soy milk, all of which have equivalent calcium and vitamin D to cow’s milk. • Try flavored yogurt. • Offer cheese products (cottage cheese, mozzarella string cheese), or add cheese to sandwiches. • Switch to calcium-fortified orange juice, breads and breakfast cereals.

Why They Reject Milk Why do babies reject cow’s milk in the first place? According to Dr. Tyrala, it comes down to each child’s taste preference. Both breast milk and formula are sweeter than cow’s milk. In addition, neither formula nor breast milk taste anything like cow’s milk, so switching to it is a significant change. The problem has nothing to do with lactose intolerance, as lactose is a sugar that is present.

What to Do If My Toddler Won’t Drink Milk Make milk taste better Dairy products which are rich in calcium include yogurt, cheese and ice cream. Milk, low-fat ice cream or frozen yogurt can be used to make tasty milkshakes or fruit

smoothies The traditional example is pouring milk over cereal, but children might enjoy putting food in milk or eating milk dishes such as macaroni and cheese, casseroles or soups. Add milk to other foods During mealtimes or snacks, make milk the drink of choice by offering pure milk or chocolate (or strawberry) milk. Toddlers love to have independence, but you can still direct their decisions. Begin small Begin with 6 ounces of milk for children between 1 to 3 years and 8 ounces of milk for older children. You can even begin with 1 or 2 ounces (or even a sip) at a time if your child is unwilling at first. Don’t give up. Keep offering your child little amounts of milk in hope that they will eventually start enjoying. Offer other dairy products During mealtimes or snacks, make milk the drink of choice by offering pure milk or chocolate (or strawberry) milk. Children enjoy flavored milk more than white milk, but you can control the amount of flavoring and reducing it over time so that they are not getting increased sugar in their diet. Make the serving appealing Milk can be served in a favorite cup, use a fun straw, or try a sports bottle with a pull-up spout. In this manner, the child will enjoy drinking milk as they will concentrate more on the container than the content. Count the calcium from all foods Dairy products contain the well-known amount of calcium. Other foods such as tofu, sardines, some leafy green vegetables and calcium-fortified foods such as fortified orange juice, cereals and other breakfast foods contain this valuable nutrient, too. Stay positive about milk Staying positive is a vital way of making milk a good option for your child. Be a role model by drinking milk yourself on a regular basis (also avoid any negative comments). in all three products, says Tyrala. Parents of milk-striking kids can breathe easier knowing their children do not have a condition, just a fussy palate.

r o f s k c i r t 7 Picky Eaters!

Do you have a picky eater? I have one. It’s strange honestly because I have one great eater and one that’s totally picky. I’m not sure what I did wrong or right.

I wanted to share some tricks and hacks I’ve found that might help you with your picky eater. Anything help is good, right?

7 Sneaky Tricks for Picky Eaters 1. Dinner Winner Plate – Make eating a game! No one likes losing (especially if you are competing against your brother or sister) and at the end, if you make it all the way through, there is a surprise! 2. Food Swaps – These picky eater swaps make total sense! This chart gives you a list of foods and you choose which things your child already eats. Then you can see if your child likes that, the chances are great that they will like this. 3. Copy Kids – This technique is kind of crazy, and I’ll be honest, I had the DVD and lost it before I ever tried it with my kiddos. They say kids can learn best from other children, so this features videos of children eating fruits and vegetables – one for each of the twelve fruits and veggies. You put a bowl of that particular food on the table and pop in the DVD and see what happens. They say your kiddo will start eating!

4. Dip – The easiest way I can get my kids to eat something they are unsure of is to dip it. Ketchup, ranch dressing, mild salsa, peanut butter, cheese sauce, yogurt…. There are so many things you can dip fruits, veggies and meats in.

5. Don’t get hung up on the time of day your child eats, or how much she eats at a sitting – It’s okay if your kid doesn’t eat three square meals every day as long as over the course of a week or two she eats things from each food group.

6. Stick with it – You’ve probably heard it before: A child has to try something ten to 15 times before he likes it. “While that sounds daunting to many parents who have a hard time getting their kids to try something once, it does get easier,” says Dr. Williams. His research shows that once you get the ball rolling on tasting new foods, it takes on average only six attempts for kids to accept them. “Still, a lot of parents don’t want to introduce new foods at lunch or dinner because it may ruin the meal for the whole family,” he says. “Instead, offer them during snacktime.” 7. Let go of your end of the emotional rope – You can’t force your child to do anything, especially eat, so just stop trying. Simply offer her nutritious, varied foods—and eat them yourself. She can have hers, or not, but you’re showing her how. Do you still remember having to 80 l Nov/dec 2016 l

eat your veggies or clean your plate before you could leave the table? Adam Strauss, a pediatrician offers a word of caution. “When parents demand that their kids eat certain foods, they’re attaching negative connotations to it. Pretty soon, the struggle is worse.” Put the food on her plate, but if it stays there, don’t push her and don’t stress over it.

Give straight forward praise, even if he takes only one bite of something new. For example: “It’s great that you tried the chili!” Basing the praise on how you feel (“Mummy’s so happy!”) sends a questionable message: He controls your emotions with his fork. “I used to feel really attached to my kids’ eating the dishes I’d taken the time to make. My emphasis on my split-pea soup especially made everyone miserable. Finally, one day I ignored the soup but put out some fun sides, and the kids ended up tasting the soup.”

Stress-Less Weaning Programme As part of their Stress-Less weaning programme, Babymoov has selected some of its most popular recipes featuring delicious, seasonal root vegetables to demonstrate just how easy it can be to get babies and toddlers eating the recommended five-a-day. From first taste purees, to healthy treats, all the recipes included are quick and easy to prepare, especially with the help of the Nutribaby 5-in-1 food processor, saving on both mess and time. Julia Wolman, Babymoov’s stress-less weaning expert explains the health benefits of each recipe and why we should all be tucking into more veg this autumn. Perfect for starting to wean your baby…

Carrot, Sweet Potato Puree with Turmeric Julia says: “Sometimes the orange pigment can show in babies’ hands and skin as their bodies get used to the beta-carotene, however this is rare and if it does develop is not harmful. Sweet potatoes are not only a starchy carbohydrate food providing energy, but they also count towards “five-a-day”. Flavouring food with herbs and spices such as turmeric during, and beyond, weaning is far preferable to using salt and can help babies develop an adventurous palate right from the start.”

Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients: 100g carrot 100g sweet potato ¼ of an onion Pinch of turmeric Knob of butter 5cl single cream

Method: 1. Peel the carrot and sweet potato, rinse and chop into chunks. Peel and slice the onion. 2. Put all the vegetables into the basket of the Nutribaby and set a 20 minute cooking cycle.

3. Check they are cooked through and tender. Blend the vegetables with the single cream, pinch of turmeric and knob of butter. 4. It’s ready to be tasted! So Simple.

FOOD & DRINK

Salmon, Potato and Beetroot

Julia says: “Beetroot is an increasingly popular and highly nutritious root vegetable. It provides iron; a mineral which many young children do not get enough of in their diets, and is very important for cognitive (brain) development. Babies are born with stores of iron but from around six months these start to deplete, so all dietary sources of iron are extremely important during weaning. Beetroot also contains various other important micronutrients such as folate (naturally-occurring folic acid) and magnesium. Don’t be alarmed if you find your baby’s wee is a bit pink after eating beetroot - this is called beeturia and is not harmful!

Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

Ingredients: 1 portion of salmon 1 potato 1 medium-sized beetroot 1 teaspoon of oil

Method: 1. Peel the potato and dice into small pieces (1-2cm). 2. Place the pieces into the cooking basket and start a 20 minute cooking cycle. After 5 minutes add the second basket with the salmon in. 3. Peel and dice the beetroot. Add it to the top basket for

the last minute of the cooking cycle. 4. When the cooking cycle has finished, put all the ingrediants into the blender bowl whilst hot, add the oil and blend everything for a beautiful pink puree.

Little Carrot Cakes

Julia says: “Carrots are a great way to give cakes and biscuits a nutritional boost and some natural sweetness. Adding yogurt during baking also provides extra calcium, important for strengthening babies’ growing bones. For a healthier version why not experiment and substitute some of the sugar for raisins or dried apricots instead - dried fruit provides natural sweetness and is also a good source of iron for young children.”

Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 60 minutes

Ingredients: 2-3 carrots (roughly 150g peeled) 1 orange 200g of plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 100g ground almonds 200g sugar 3 eggs 100g yoghurt 60g butter at room temperature 1 tiny pinch of salt

Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees and grease and flour coat one loaf time or smaller shaped ones. 2. Peel the carrots and slice. Put them in a basket and start a 20 minute cooking cycle 3. Squeeze the orange and when cooked, blend the carrots and orange juice into a puree. 4. Transfer to a bowl and keep at room temperature.

5. Add the flour, baking powder, almonds, sugar, eggs, yoghurt, soft butter and pinch of salt to the bowl of the blender. 6. Give it a few pulses, then add the puree. Blend all together. 7. Put the mixture into the greased tin and cook for 30-40 minutes depending on the size of the tin.
