BERNARD TSCHUMI RED IS NOT A COLOUR Rashni Parichha 001010201011 Design Methodology Department of Architecture Jadavpur University

INTRODUCTION You still frequently get asked,"Why are the folies red? Why not yellow or orange ? And why not different colors for different events and meanings?" At first you just refused to answer the question . You said, " I never answer that question." Then you got bored with that so you said, "because RED IS NOT A COLOUR ." Right ? It's mysterious ". You left it at that. Then you started to do other projects , and you were not going to use red in them. Otherwise , people wouldn't hire you because they thought that your buildings were going to be red. But not only that. That's not the real reason . You started to think that each project has a concept. The issue is how to reinforce the concept. You decided that the use of colour would be a means of reinforcing the concept. So at Le Fresnoy, where you had a new roof over the old roof but also the walkways - all those vectors of movement - those got bright , artificial colors. Now the color of the material has a color ; the concrete has a color, the wood has a color , and the bricks have a color, but this specific color is intentionally artificial. So when you answered , "red is not a color," you meant to be more than provocative . For you, it is about what makes ARCHITECTURE CONCEPTS .

PARC DE LA VILLETTE / FIREWORKS You have always been fascinated by fireworks . One day you are asked to design fireworks for a summer festival at the Parc de la Villette . You ask yourself : can one extend the concepts and themes of the park up into the air? Could architecture be turned into a kind of three - dimensional , ethereal piece of performance art ?

CONCEPT / CONTEXT / CONTENT

Villa Rotonda , Vicenza

"May be the assumed perfection of the Villa Rotonda made it become generic . Or perhaps the first Guggenheim museum was specific to its context , but when decontextualized and repeated in places like L.A. or Abu Dhabi it became generalized , meaning specific to Frank Gehry but still standardized in the sense of an identifiable or signature brand ." -Bernard Tschumi

CONCEPT / CONTEXT / CONTENT What is a concept and what is it for ? Etymologically derived from the latin word "concipere" , a concept is about grasping or holding onto the real. Concepts are what allow us to apprehend reality . Conceptualizing a situation or event means extracting the potential of its circumstances . -Bernard Tschumi •

"Architecture is not so much of a knowledge of form , but a form of knowledge." - Bernard Tschumi
