when
lifemeetsscience
Campus Gaustadbekkdalen spring 2014_12 weeks individual work As stated by Vitruvius, the meeting spot - “the clearing in the woods”, was the initial point of all culture. The importance of places to meet is unquestionable. The question in this project has been on how to make these places govern the architecture. To give infrastructure the most important role - and, intertwined with common areas - open up spaces that with its qualities invites for interactions and socialising. The effort is done through the investigation of different structures meeting together; two different directions, and two different principals - the strict rational, and the playfull. In between all the different scientific work, in the intersections between the different directions and prinsipal structures, life intervenes - life meets science.
8
At the outset of the project, the site’s surroundings, together with the historical “blindern axis” set by Sverre Pedersen (which links the whole university together), carried out the two directions which governs the infrastructure and the buildings structural form. The large lamella, comprising laboratories, is positioned to work as a screen against the ring 3 highway. Communication areas is placed in the facade addressing the “inside” of the facility. The housing block is basically a mirrored counterfeit to the labblock, but then slightly rotated about two “joints” where the infrastructural galleries switches side - addressing both the “inside” of the facility and the recreational landscape to the south-east. The design of the housinglamella is then carrying out the design of the thoroughfare and the frames for the common areas in between the two lamellas. This structure is low and more playfully designed - inviting the public and relating to the landscape.
the meeting of two structures The three quite tall and rational lamellas comprise generic entities (offices, laboratories, dwellings) in a very schematic configuration, giving the common areas the potential for a more “playfull” configuration. As the common areas are accessible for the public, they have been given a low structure following the “blindern-axis”. It’s framed by the lamellas as well as addressing the thoroughfare and outdoor areas. Where the two different structures meet, infrastructural nodes are created with spatial qualities which motivates for mingling and “life to occur”.

tilted roofs As a consequence of the auditoriums forms, the landscape and sunlight considerations, all the roofs on the low structure are tilted in diiferent directions. This underpins the idea of a more freely designed common area, as well as giving the building an abstract relation to the landscape. roof access The two large auditoriums, oriented in opposite directions, fills in both the landscape differences and the node in the meeting between the two different structures. With its falling roofs, access is given from the street, leading in to the main hall - the heart of the building. laboratories and offices
common functions The design and location of each common function is, second to its own demands, given by the infrastructural axes, the falling landscape, adjacent programs and sunlight.

main communication area Ensuring gualities in all communication areas has been a priority. Vertical and horisontal communication is consistently placed in the outer edge of the building, ensuring light and giving life to the facade. As a structural factor, the infrastructure follows the blindern axis, efficiently connecting important nodes and given entrances.

urban transplant pergola across skøyen MFO-park + verkstedveien fall 2013_2 weeks co-work with Carl Fredrik Foss
14
The object of the task was to analyse an existing urban project, and use prinsipals we found on a comparable site in Oslo. MFO-park in Zurich is, unlike normal parks, also using the third dimension - verticality. Discovering that the MFO-park actually is a pergola, we transplanted some of these prinsipals to Skøyen, where the verticality could be used to solve a horisontal problem - Verkstedveien - a narrow pedestrian street with nothing to offer. Using verticality does not only give space for recreation, but also help pedestrians overcome the barriers made by the railway and E18 free-way and thus linking Skøyen to Bygdøy.

Based on collected empiri and drawings on an existing urban project in Oslo, the main object of the task was to critically discuss urban issues. The end-result would be one drawing, addressing as many of the issues as possible. Falck Ytters Plass is a mixed-used complex in Oslo, containing apartments, car-park, shopping center and sporting facilities for youths on the roof. While the intentions are good, what we found is that the different programs compromises each other, making none of them really work as intended.

city in change vorti-city
Skøyen is the western corridor to Oslo, and is today mainly occupied by cars and office-buildings - offering little to the inhabitants of the area. Located close to the sea and Oslos two largest green lungs, Frognerparken and Bygdøy, the potentials for a much more viral and pedestrian-friendly district are high.
skøyen fall 2013_8 weeks co-work with Anja Lauvli Schley, Morten Jakobsen and Camilla Gormsen
Together with using green and blue courses to link Skøyen with the surrounding areas, our main focus have been on making a strong and clearly visible meeting- and transit-space - the “Skøyen Grand Concourse”. Symbolising the “hallway“ to Oslo with a concentration of metro, train, tram, buses, car-traffic, bicycle free-ways and pedestrians the new concourse works as a viral hub and meet spot. The new settlement with mixed programs is then “swirling” this energy around.

green-blue courses: perforating barriers and connecting recreational areas
karenslyst alle (existing pedestrian street): defining the endpoints by connecting them with the sea
parking: concentration of car-parking in the superstructure, releasing space in the streets
collective transportation: amassing all different transportations for easy access from the concourse

The fairly tall buildings are rising up from a superstructure which correspondes with the landscape and handles car parking and service-entries. Thereby the elevated “ground floor” is realesed for the pedestrians and enables a free view to the sea.

student housing seeing the park for the trees torvald meyersgate 68 + schouss plass fall 2012_9 weeks project with Guro Langemyhr As suggested by the semi-ironic title we aimed at a holistic approach, but based on a detail - namely the tree. Schouss Plass is a small park at Grunerløkka in Oslo, that today isn’t used for much more than as a passageway. While there are som huge oak trees on the site, we saw this as a potential. We wanted to link the students to the park and give Schouss Plass a real boost.

housing for all bygdøy fall 2012_4 weeks co-work with Michelle Schneider, Ola Claussen, Caroline Hannisdal and Jan Godzimirski The object of the task was to design smart solutions for three pre-determined small apartments, and with solid research challenge the technical and universal design regulations (tek10). One of our basic ideas was to increase the space efficiency by using the “turning circle” as basis for a new door. The prinsipal of the idea was scaled for a “seasonal dining room”.

The spectator will wish (or even imagine) that the form is developing further to become more static or “complete” this also provides the form distinctive character from different angles
