jiyugaoka public theater tcu fall 2014 professor: Chiaki Arai
The existing pedestrian passage-way crossing the site is kept in such a way that it literally perforates through the building and exposes much of the theaters functions directly to the passing pedestrians, as well as inviting them in for new ways of interaction. The roof folds down like two opposite spirals - inviting the public to further investigate the building. The roof over the hall is perfect for an outdoor cinema, and the big staircase towards the north-east corner of the site also works as an amfi opposing an open stage and park with seating in the landscape. The building thus comprises three uniqely different theaters, making it an effective, intriguing and fully functional place also for bigger cultural events.
