Indoor Athletic Facility U NI VERSI T Y OF G EORG I A / AT HENS, GA
Home to one of the most prestigious college football programs in the nation, the University of Georgia engaged RATIO to design a new Indoor Athletic Facility that provides a stateof-the-art environment for developing world-class student-athletes. The facility’s site within the crowded campus athletic district posed a significant challenge, as the building needed to house a regulation-size football field while being appropriately sized to blend into the surrounding campus fabric. Several site locations were considered in order to find a configuration that optimized the indoor space without compromising the adjacent outdoor practice fields or the nearby Butts-Mehre athletics building. Building the IAF as an addition to Butts-Mehre allowed two outdoor practice fields to be maintained while collecting all football operations under one roof. To mitigate the size of the facility, the design team lowered the level of the indoor field to align with the outdoor fields and chose exterior materials that complement the surrounding campus context.

COLORADO ST. UNIV. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING: FT. COLLINS, CO
Chemistry Research Building C O LO R A D O S TAT E U N I V ER S I T Y / F O R T C O L L I N S , C O
In 2015, Colorado State University sought to create a new chemistry building that would support service-intense laboratories for research and renovate an existing building for less fume hood-intense teaching laboratories. The greatest challenge was changing the behaviors and expectations of a research faculty who for decades had maintained separate research space, moving them into open, flexible, and shared laboratories. This strategy gives CSU a lower overall operating cost and greater flexibility in adapting to new types of research or changes in faculty. RATIO’s team collaborated with the steering committee to create a baseline open lab concept that would meet the needs of three categories of research – Synthetic Organic, Synthetic Inorganic, and BioSynthetic. These three lab prototypes represent the flexible foundation for modern chemistry research. For each concept, RATIO worked with a smaller subcommittee to develop short-term fit out specifications while maintaining the vision of a research building with long-term flexibility. In all, this 62,000 SF building will provide capacity for over 130 researchers and more than 125 fume hoods.

Wabash Valley Power Operations Center WAB ASH VALLEY POW ER / I ND I ANAPOLIS, IN
Wabash Valley Power (WVP)’s new headquarters is designed to be a vehicle for developing new ways of advancing sustainability conscious energy transmission. The state-of-the-art 50,000 SF workplace takes its curved form from the roundabout it sits behind, carefully placed on the edge of the wooded area to preserve as many trees as possible and represent the duality of its business. The building organizes itself into two architectural components; the office wing including its operations center, and a conferencing wing. The primary program of offices, conference rooms, and collaboration spaces are collected in a sweeping glass bar that provides far-reaching natural light to energize the workplace. Conversely, the operations center is a secure space clad with Kasota Stone to protect its content.
KAR Global Headquarters K A R AUCT I ON SERVI CES, I NC. / C ARMEL, IN
KAR Global, a Fortune 1000 company, commissioned a new corporate headquarters campus on 13 acres for nearly 1,600 of KAR’s 15,000 employees. This 250,000 SF headquarters brings a progressive aesthetic traditionally reserved for a large urban environment to a midwestern suburb of Indianapolis. Leveraging design as a business strategy to create one of the best workplaces in the region, KAR realigned its corporate workforce to create additional efficiencies and allow for better proximity and communication between the operational functions of the business units. The monumental stair set behind ultra-clear glass at the corner of the building is designed to celebrate this new dynamic connectivity and express the organization’s culture of transparency and commitment to the community.
Samsung Office Project B E I JI NG , CHI NA
When designing a headquarters for a leading global enterprise, the ideals of the company should be considered and derived in a way where they become architectural expressions and key characteristics of the structure. The proposed building is a 56-story high rise tower in the Beijing central business district. Its south east corner is a prominent visual identity addressing not only a major intersection but communicating with the central park, leaving the east edge for a pronounced entrance to the heart of the building. Additional considerations of the district’s master plan are the public spaces, pedestrian promenades and retail frontages designated along the western and northern edges of the site. Public transportation is accessible from all directions with four bus stops and five subway stops in all directions.

After choosing a location on Fayetteville Street in the heart of downtown Raleigh, RATIO renovated this 1950s office to house its growing workforce with a focus on employee retention, productivity, and collaboration. RATIO’s project team began by embracing an open workplace concept centered on a communal “design lab” that supports opportunities for collaboration, creativity, learning and social interaction among staff. This flexible, modern environment supports the design process and communicates the organization’s values as a bold expression of the RATIO brand. With ample space for private meetings and the latest in videoconferencing technology, the renovation also enhances connectivity and collaboration between the firm’s four studios and clients across the country.
Centropolis S E OUL, KOREA
Centropolis made history in the heart of Seoul’s downtown business district with its sale of over $1 billion prior to occupancy, the largest single real estate deal in South Korean history. The exterior wall is comprised of unitized glass and an articulated porcelain panel system that pays homage to the motif found in traditional Korean stone walls. The two 26-story office towers allow a view corridor through the center, reducing the effect of the area’s heavy visual density. The lower rise podium, designed on a more human scale, centers pedestrian circulation by providing unobstructed access on the ground level as well as a rooftop garden. Delicate historical artifacts from the country’s past found during the initial phases of construction are now displayed in a curated museum gallery. Incorporating sustainable design and building performance strategies, Centropolis was awarded LEED Gold.

NCAA Headquarters Expansion NC A A / I ND I ANAPOLI S, I N
RATIO was selected to design a 143,000 SF expansion to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) headquarters in downtown Indianapolis, originally designed by renowned architect, Michael Graves. The expansion’s design highlights the NCAA’s support of the student/athlete’s academic strength; harmonizes with the adjacent state park’s open vistas and future campus green space; and allows the NCAA Hall of Champions to be the prominent architectural expression. Sustainable elements are also part of the expansion’s design. The exterior building envelope is modulated based on solar orientation, giving consideration to day lighting and views. HVAC and lighting systems are designed to automatically adjust or shut down during periods of limited demand, resulting in reduced energy consumption. Last, air quality is increased through use of sustainable construction materials, and recycling accommodations for building occupants will be located throughout the building.
HOSPITALITY Creating a 21st Century hospitality environment means designing not only a space, but an experience. Today’s guests demand places that are authentic and unique, but also comfortable, convenient and familiar. Marrying these considerations with high-performance design – in terms of finances, operations and the environment – requires proven experience and dedicated hotel expertise.

Wuhan International New City W UAHN, CHI NA
The Wuhan International New City is a 1.4 million m2 mixed-use development located in the Hanyang district of central Wuhan, the most populous city in Central China. Though primarily a residential development, the site also features 100,000 m2 of commercial space, a hotel, a kindergarten, public service buildings and cultural amenities – a true urban destination for residents and visitors alike. Because of the site’s enormous size, much thought was given to creating a human-scaled urban environment. Inspired by precedent cities like Barcelona, Paris and Tokyo, the design team incorporated scaled-down block sizes and a robust pedestrian plan to increase connectivity and encourage a vibrant streetscape. Finally, the need for resiliency and water management were key drivers for the design of this development, which is surrounded by canals and the Yangtze and Han Rivers. Streets, parks and other green connections serve a dual purpose as sustainable infrastructure, acting as “sponges” that collect and disperse rainwater throughout the site.

Located in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, the 276,000 SF museum incorporates the existing 42,000 SF IMAX theater to create the focal point of the Park’s museum complex. Situated on the historic National Road between the NCAA Hall of Champions and Headquarters and the Eiteljorg Museum, the State Museum depicts the many “stories of Indiana.” Rather than being merely a container for the 70,000 SF of exhibits, the building’s forms and materials integrate with the exhibits to reinforce the museum experience. The massing of the building expresses a sense of the “Hoosier” personality, combining conservative strength with a contrary spirit. The building’s circulation system utilizes a simple north / south and east / west axial system, alluding to the State’s motto, the “Crossroads of America.” Materials indigenous to the State, including limestone, sandstone, stainless steel, brick, extruded aluminum, and glass coalesce to form the museum’s unique identity.

McNichols Civic Center Building Phase I & II C IT Y AND COUNT Y OF D ENVER / D ENVER , CO
From a former Carnegie Library to an office later abandoned, the McNichols Civic Center building rehabilitation restores its vital role as the cultural center of Denver’s only National Historic Landmark Civic Center Park. The Greek Revival building, with its Corinthian columns and iconic colonnade across its front, offers new experiences in a classic space as one of the city’s most beautiful event spaces for exhibitions, cultural performances and public events. Undergoing two rehabilitation phases, phase one returned much of the building’s original historic character through window and exterior finish restoration. The second brought interior features back to life and created a new main entry, welcoming the community into the space through a textured-glass doorway.
Colorado State Capitol Dome Restoration D E NVER, CO
Perhaps the most iconic building in Colorado, the State Capitol was constructed over a ten year period spanning the turn of the 20th century. After standing proudly for more than 100 years the State of Colorado embarked on an aggressive rehabilitation of the entire dome structure in 2011 based on severe structural deterioration. RATIO was part of a national team of experts assembled to repair the fragile cast iron structure and exterior skin of the dome. RATIO’s role in this project was to assess, design and specify the rehabilitation of all wood and steel windows in the dome. This included field investigations and preparation of construction documents. RATIO also provided continual on-site assistance throughout construction and maintained a local presence for the team.
COMMUNITY RATIO has worked on numerous community projects throughout the Midwest. Our studio team members take special interest in the process entailed with creating solutions that connect diverse public groups to their community and to each other. With a deep appreciation for the nuances that make each place unique, our team uses a holistic approach to make sure future visions of growth and continued prosperity can be realized.
TOWN HALL + CULTURAL ARTS CENTER: PLAINFIELD, IN
Forsyth County Central Library W I N ST ON-SALEM , NC
Wishing to create a transformative “third place” for the city of Winston-Salem and provide new services for library patrons, Forsyth County selected RATIO to renovate and expand its existing central library and modernize its offerings to be reflective of a 21st Century iconic community library. The design solution selectively demolished dysfunctional parts of the existing building, renovated functional areas (approximately 50,000 SF), and added a 50,000 SF glazed addition that responds to the needs and program of an open, flexible, collaborative and sustainable library, with space for a café, an outdoor reading garden, an auditorium, a makerspace, and a “technology petting zoo.” future development on the western side of downtown.
Community Library Renovation I & II T H E COM M UNI T Y LI B RARY ASSOCI ATION , IN C. / KETCHUM, ID
The Community Library is an atypical non-profit library providing services to the picturesque Sun Valley community. The 27,000 SF library was initially constructed in 1976 and completed through a series of expansions in 1986 and 1996. The rich literary history of the community is celebrated through the mountain lodge architecture housing the extraordinary breadth of the library’s collections. Through a series of design workshops, the library realized the necessity to create a campaign to “renew their library.” Through the $10 million generosity of the community, the library was renewed with reimagined spaces reflective of 21st century library services.

Isabella Bird Community School D E NVER PUB LI C SCHOOLS / D ENVER, CO
The Isabella Bird Community School, ECE – 5th grade, is located at the far southeastern corner of the Stapleton Community in Denver, CO and is surrounded on all sides by residential streets. Both the client, Denver Public Schools and the design team sought to create a building in which the students, as the primary users, are celebrated and inspired. Likewise, this building is the primary community facility in the neighborhood and acknowledge its role as the core of community. As such, the building is organized into four distinct pods converging on a gently curving spine, or corridor, that brings the four learning communities together.
Julian S. Carr Building DURHA M SCHOOL OF THE ARTS / DURHA M, NC
Durham School of the Arts is a secondary magnet school focused on the visual and performing arts. RATIO’s design for the 1926 Carr building creates a vibrant, collaborative learning community that integrates all aspects of student life, and provides a 21st century school facility within a largely conserved early 20th century building. The renovated Carr building features general instruction classrooms and other facilities for sixth and seventh grades, and art and drama spaces for grades six through 12. The new facilities include two large art labs; a woodshop for drama and theater; two drama classrooms; a costume shop and costume storage area; a 3,700 SF dance studio; and two science labs. A new third-floor dining area has two serving lines and can seat 210 students and staff. The renovated building also features a new roof and windows. An exterior court was covered with a skylight to create a two-story common area / art gallery.
Willow Spring High School WA K E C O U N T Y P U B L I C S C H O O L S Y S T E M / FU Q UAY-VA R I N A , N C
This prototype, adapted from the H6 model of Rolesville High School, is one of several developed by RATIO in order to speed time to market and provide more accurate cost estimates than the typical K-12 project. Capable of accommodating the planned growth of up to 2,350 students, the school’s flexibility and progressive design features that promote collaboration and a more personal learning experience have been well received. Willow Spring improves on the original prototype with several programmatic features such as a two-story cafÊ commons space, more centrally located learning pod commons, and the shift of all athletic programs to the first floor, with the stadium, tennis courts and practice fields in close proximity.
Southeast Raleigh YMCA / Elementary School Y MC A OF T HE T RI ANG LE + WAKE COUN TY P UBLIC SCHOOL S YS TEM / R ALEIGH, N C
This partnership project brings together the YMCA of the Triangle and the Wake County Public School System into a single building to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty in an underserved area with tools for wellness and education. The design provides the safety and security of an elementary school while offering the full range of YMCA programs to the surrounding residents as one unified, inviting, and community-focused structure. To facilitate shared use, RATIO’s solution put the pool, lobby, cafeteria, stage, school gym, culinary kitchen and commons in the middle between the dedicated elementary school spaces and the primary YMCA spaces. This unique collaboration serves as a national model for YMCAs across the country.
Poyner YMCA Y MC A OF T HE T RI ANG LE / RALEI G H, N C
With a burgeoning tech industry attracting growing numbers of young professionals to downtown Raleigh, the YMCA challenged RATIO to envision an entirely new facility model and aesthetic environment programmed to serve the needs and desires of the emerging demographic. In a recently revitalized former bank building, the YMCA returns to the city center for the first time since the early 1970s. Situated between two event plazas, the narrow building is entered at street level, with most of the programmed space (including the primary wellness area, fitness studios, and locker rooms) located below grade and bound by the existing 1950s structure that could not be altered. To counteract this challenging layout, a series of sculptural, decorative stairs connect and bring daylight to all three levels of the facility.
Indiana Convention Center Expansion I N DI ANA STAD I UM AND CONVENT I ON BUILDIN G AUTHOR ITY / IN DIAN AP OLIS , IN
The Indiana Stadium and Convention Building Authority retained RATIO to design a major expansion to the Indiana Convention Center as a response to ongoing increased convention and trade show demand. The more than 700,000 SF expansion includes exhibition space, meeting rooms, and pre-function and support space – all within a tight urban site. The project also includes the design of a climate-controlled pedestrian passageway between the Convention Center and the new Lucas Oil Stadium. The expansion’s materiality integrates the new facility into its urban context through brick, limestone and green tinted glazing from the existing building, accented with patinated copper recalling the Statehouse dome, the Simon Headquarters building glazing and St. John’s Church spires. To mark its place as an Indiana facility, the expansion is designed to recall the narrative story of the glacially altered northern Indiana landscape coupled with southern Indiana’s bluffs. As a meeting place for major conventions and trade shows in an urban environment, the building’s design captures the welcoming gesture of a handshake.
Before Renovation
Evansville Greyhound Terminal I N DI ANA L AND M ARKS / EVANSVI LLE, IN
The 1938 Evansville Greyhound Terminal served as a prototype for Greyhound’s streamlined Art Moderne terminals across the country. The building, clad in enameled steel panels, suffered unsympathetic alterations in the 1980s and was vacant by 2007. The community feared this significant downtown landmark could be demolished. Indiana Landmarks selected RATIO to prepare a rehabilitation study. RATIO conducted an assessment of the building’s conditions and needs. Upon completion of the report, Indiana Landmarks decided to proceed with rehabilitation of the building. The building’s exterior was restored to its historic appearance, including restoration of the original enameled steel panels, steel sash windows and neon lighting. Cunningham restaurant group is currently renovating the interior for a BRU Burger Bar.
Federal Hill Commons C IT Y OF NOB LESVI LLE, I N
Wishing to draw visitors and provide recreational opportunities for its rapidly growing population, the City of Noblesville envisioned Federal Hill Commons as the gateway to the City’s historic downtown and a catalyst for nearby development. RATIO was selected to lead a collaborative, community-based master planning process that culminated in a comprehensive vision for the park, traffic-calming improvements to the adjacent State Road 19, and a pedestrian bridge over the White River linking the park to the courthouse square. The project includes a grand plaza, a playground, a new 5,000-seat outdoor performance venue, Ice skating rink, public restrooms, new pedestrian paths, public art, and a story wall that will creatively interpret the history of the community. Green infrastructure in the parking lot and throughout the park stores and cleans storm water before it flows to the river.
Georgia Street Improvements C IT Y OF I ND I ANAPOLI S, I N
When Indianapolis initially implemented improvements to its downtown Wholesale District more than ten years ago, city planners had the idea that Georgia Street – a city street connecting Bankers Life Fieldhouse with the Indiana Convention Center – could be transformed into a three-block long event street for city-wide festivals, art shows, concerts and conventions. As the expansion to the Indiana Convention Center nears completion and the city continues to position itself as a convention destination, the dream to transform Georgia Street into an interactive environment within Indianapolis’ entertainment district is becoming a reality. RATIO’s plan for the city corridor transformed Georgia Street into a curb-less pedestrian corridor, similar to Indianapolis’ iconic Monument Circle. Vehicular traffic is reduced to one lane in both directions, allowing for additional public space in the center of the street. A permanent network of infrastructure improvements provides event-appropriate utilities, including those needed to accommodate concerts at special stage areas in the west and east blocks. Expanded cafe areas and tree groves designed to enhance the pedestrian environment during non-event times create a distinct city destination.
