Keenan Moore: Lifelong Corvallis student aces it RUSS LAWRENCE for the
Ravalli Republic
CORVALLIS - “I’ve done it all, taken it all in and made it the best it can be,” says Keenan Moore of her Corvallis High School experience. Since entering CHS as a freshman, she’s consciously worked to create the most fulfilling high school experience she could — and you’d be hard put to top what she came up with. Junior class president, student body president, Interact, Prom committee, Daly Mansion Education Alliance, recycling — they’re just words on a resume until Moore gets to talking about them, when her genuine enthusiasm for each becomes readily apparent. She played volleyball for three years, giving it up her senior year to focus on her primary sport, tennis. Heading into the State tournament, the Blue Devils were undefeated, and though Moore didn’t qualify as a finalist, she traveled as an alternate. That full slate of activities, plus a GPA of 3.957, earned her the honor of Salutatorian at the graduation ceremony, to be held June 1 at 11 a.m. in the new gym. About that not-quite-perfect GPA: What was her downfall? “Chemistry,” she sighed. Missing that “A” is her biggest regret, with regard to her CHS career. Her favorite subjects have been English and History. “It has a lot to do with the teachers I had,” she said. Not coincidentally, those teachers included both of her parents, Rob Plakke and Tina Moore, who taught her freshman and sophomore English classes, respectively, and instilled in her a love of reading and writing. And history? “I don’t see how that can’t end up fascinating anybody,” she explained.
Congratulations Graduates! BITTERROOT DISPOSAL • 172 s. 2nd • Hamilton • 363-3630
That interest in history may have led to her selection for the Daly Mansion Education Alliance, which draws from local schools to focus on team-developed historical research, but Moore spotted her own opportunity, helping to improve the marketing of the Mansion for weddings. She’ll be enrolling at MSU in the fall, with a degree in Psychology in her sights, and a career as a school counselor in mind. One of the most important lessons she’s learned outside of class is to be more accepting, and not to judge people based on superficial characteristics. Observing the Corvallis counseling staff has been
influential, as well. She’s been in the Corvallis school system since pre-school, and will be graduating with a surprising number of peers who’ve been with her the whole time. Moore cited that as one of the most satisfying aspects of her school career, the friendships she’s created and the experiences they’ve shared. She believes she’ll be remembered by classmates as “nice, funny, and smart,” though one suspects her peers would add several more adjectives to that list. Even with such a high profile, one thing that many of her acquaintances don’t know about her is what, exactly, she does when she disappears from the Bitterroot each summer. That would be the time she spends working on Wyoming dude ranch, run by her aunt and uncle, near Cody. It’s a working ranch, catering primarily to East coast teens, and she wrangles horses, fixes fence, and restores outbuildings, in between taking guests into the backcountry on foot or horseback. Her love of the outdoors — backpacking, riding, and other activities — might escape the notice of those who normally see her in a school environment, but it’s a serious part of who she is. Her love of working with horses is one of the reasons she elected to attend MSU, where she can continue to be involved in horse training and riding. Ideally, her college career would include a semester abroad in Australia, but apart from that, there’s no place that calls to her like Montana. She’ll be happy if she can make her home where she grew up, picturing herself in either Bozeman or the Bitterroot. “I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else,” she affirmed. Imagine how lucky Corvallis would be to welcome her back.

Florence senior Courtney Byrne is used to a busy life David Erickson Ravalli Republic
FLORENCE - Florence High School senior Courtney Byrne will always remember the end of May and the beginning of June 2013 as an insane whirlwind of emotion and activity. She and her teammates on the Florence Lady Falcons softball team won their second straight Class B-C softball state championship on May 25, and two weeks after that, on June 9, she and her fellow seniors will graduate. Byrne is used to being busy. A multi-sport standout at Florence, she plays volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and softball in the spring and summer. “It’s going to be crazy,” she said on May 22, the day before she and her teammates boarded a bus for the state tournament. “The next two weeks are going to be non-stop . But I’m used to not having a lot of downtime. With all the sports I play, I usually have about three weeks off out of the entire year.” This fall, she is planning on attending the University of Montana Western in Dillon and hopes to join the volleyball squad down there. “I emailed a video to the coach and we’ve been talking back and forth,” Byrne said. “So far, she hasn’t been able to watch the video, so I’m just waiting on that. If volleyball doesn’t work out I will transfer to the University of Montana and try to play softball there.” Byrne said she is planning on studying biology in college. “I would go into wildlife biology, or I might study molecular biology and go into forensics,” she said.
It was her father Scott that instilled in her a deep appreciation for the natural world. “My dad is big into wildlife,” she said. “We used to go down to the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge almost every night in the summer and just watch the birds and everything. Also my biology teacher Mr. Kuchel really got me interested in it.” Sports were always a big part of Byrne’s life. Her sister Megan is also a force to be reckoned with on the softball squad. “I’ve been playing my whole life,” she said. “My parents introduced us to T-ball. They didn’t force us to do it, but once we started playing we just loved it. It’s a great way to bond with other girls and make good friends. I played with the Bitterroot Sparks in fifth-grade, and in the summer I help out with all our varsity volleyball players. I go to camps, and organize fundraisers. We just did a little softball camp a few weeks ago. It’s something I’m always involved in.” Byrne said she is looking forward to graduation and moving on to the next phase of her life. First, though, she has some business to take care of on the softball diamond. “There’s four seniors on the team, and we definitely are looking to go out with a bang,” she said. Reach reporter David Erickson at 363-3300 or david.erickson@ravallirepublic.com.

John Ryter: HHS scholar-athlete is a source of renewable energy RUSS LAWRENCE for the
Ravalli Republic
HAMILTON - He won’t be leaving a legacy of championship trophies in the Hamilton High School display cases — it wasn’t a stellar year for Bronc soccer or basketball — but as the captain/co-captain of those teams, John Ryter had a great time, singling out playing Bronc soccer as one of the highlights of his HHS career. Another bright spot: his parents, Ellen and Kendall Ryter, made it to “just about every basketball and soccer game,” he said, even when that meant a long drive to Boise. He also plays for the Ravalli United soccer team, just for good measure. Add to that carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning him Valedictorian honors, and selection as a National Merit Finalist and Presidential Scholar semi-finalist (one of only six from Montana), and you begin to get the picture of a well-rounded scholar-athlete. Turns out even that picture is incomplete. Ryter also played trumpet in the band and pep band, participated in Key Club activities such as the GAN Warriors benefit run, and the trick-or-treat canned goods drive, and served as treasurer for the National Honor Society. Does that about do it? He’s worked for two years at the Rocky Mountain Lab as a student intern, performing mostly prosaic chores, but in one of the most intellectually challenging and exotic work environments in Montana. He’s the oldest of three siblings, among whom he described his role as “the peacemaker.” Sounds like a guy you want to have on your team. With Ryter, what you see is what you get: a solid team player, a smart guy who, when asked what he’ll be remembered for, didn’t mention athletic heroics, but guessed it might be for helping his friends with their homework. Ryter will be headed for MSU in the fall, to study Mechanical
Engineering, with a possible double major in Electrical Engineering. That’s logical enough, given that his favorite courses were math and physics. He’d like to pursue a career in the renewable energy field, working toward a sustainable energy future. He’ll miss hanging out with classmates that he’s known for nine years. “It’ll be nice to meet new people, but you don’t want to leave your friends behind,” he observed. He realizes, though, that his career will probably take him away from Montana—he just hopes it’s some place equally scenic. He’s a practical guy, citing Jen Carmody (AP English) as one of his most influential teachers. “She taught us all how to write,” he said, acknowledging her for providing a lifelong skill that he has already put to good use in his college applications. Ryter also gave a nod to Anthony Favero, who taught Chemistry and Physics, for his depth of understanding and ability to convey difficult concepts. So, is there anything about him that might surprise his classmates? “You mean, like if I ended up a failure in the future?” he asked, unsure how the question might apply to him. Well, yes, that would probably surprise Ryter’s classmates, but there’s a pretty low probability he’ll have to explain himself to them at a future reunion. More likely, that reunion will take place in a facility powered by a renewable energy source he had a hand in creating.

Anderson was also his senior class vice president. “High school was a fun time and good time to meet friends,” Anderson said. “But I am glad to be moving on to bigger and better things.” In 2010, Anderson was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. His older brother Ryan was a perfect match and donated marrow so that he could go straight to transplant. Anderson said that he went through chemotherapy and is “all good now.” Anderson said a big reason he wants to pursue a career in medicine is due to his experience. “I want to give back a little,” he said. After the University of Montana, Anderson said he is looking into the University of Washington to specialize possibly in oncology. Anderson will be joining his older brothers Ryan and Matt as a student at the University of Montana. Anderson is the son of Stevensville residents Mike and Sandy Anderson.
Good luck to all the graduates
