Bitterroot ’s Best Out Of Doors bird watching Teller Wildlife Refuge followed closely by Lee Metcalf There’s no better place to get out and

see nature in the Bitterroot than Teller Wildlife Refuge, which this year edged out Lee Metcalf National Wilderness Refuge to take the honors for Best Birdwatching. Teller includes a mile-long walking trail, and more than 50 of it’s 1,200 acres are open to the public. It is located just north of Corvallis on the Eastside Highway.

A perennial favorite, the canyon offers day hikes for outdoor enthusiasts of all skill levels. Hiking through Blodgett, west of Hamilton, is simply a must-do for anyone living or visiting the valley. Little wonder it is this year’s Best Day Hike. horseback riding trails and mountain bike trails Coyote Coulee At just less than 9 miles, the loop trail at Coyote Coulee is a favorite for horseback riders and mountain bikers alike. The moderate trail opens in April and stays that way through October, so it’s the perfect place to see some county and have fun doing it in the Bitterroot. The trails themselves are connected versions of old cherry orchard roads. Coyote Coulee is located about 8 miles south of Hamilton, up Lost Horse Road.

artist Robert Neaves Local artist Robert Neaves is once again Bitterroot’s Best. The former owner of Art Focus, winner of many Bitterroot’s Best awards, retired in 2011 to paint full time. One of Neaves’ famous works is the Montana Portraits Series of Hamilton, depicting state and local luminaries such as Marcus Daly, Jeannette Rankin, and Charlie Russell. Neaves is a talented painter whose work generally focuses on still life, landscapes and wildlife. He was taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Montana before being art director for the Forest Service Regional Office in Missoula for 13 years.

musician/singer Joan Zen Band & Lori Silcher tied This year, the competition was so close for Best Musician that it has been declared a tie, with the award split between Joan Zen Band and Lori Silcher. Joan Zen, a longtime winner, performs all across the state with their reggae and jazz inspired music. The band includes Debra Hicks, Jason Hicks, Donald Maus, David Horgan and Jim Rogers. Lori Silcher’s latest album, “Passage of Time” was released last year, and features collaborations with several other local artists. It is available at the Music Box and Mountain Music.
