Corvallis senior Luke Channer MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Corvallis senior Luke Channer has an eye on the prize of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. He will play football for the Montana State University Bobcats along the way. “I’m a preferred walk-on for the offensive line,” Channer said. “That will be fun and a lot of work. I’m going to do a lot of studying in my spare time. Actually, I probably won’t have much spare time.” The three-season athlete played soccer for his first two years of high school then moved to football for his fall sport. He has competed in four years of wrestling and four of track. On May 9, he said he was ranked third in Class A with a personal record of 48.7 in shot put. “I’m hoping to get over 50 and be state champion,” Channer said. “I’m also in Interact Club where we do food drives, paper drives and bell ringing.” Channer is the senior class vice president and president of the National Honor Society. “Basically, we do service and we adopt a family for Thanksgiving and Christmas,” he said. Between the clubs and sports he is very busy and uses his senior release, early out every other day, to get his homework completed. He is the class valedictorian. “I make sure I get all my work done because grades matter in life,” Channer said. “When you go to college they look at your high school grades. They look at your AP scores to give you credit and getting good grades just makes your life a lot easier.” Corvallis Principal Jason Wirt said Channer has used his high school time wisely. “Luke is has taken advantage of all that our school has to offer,” Wirt said. “He has taken every AP course available here and took an AP class through the Montana Digital Academy. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking a rigorous course load.” Wirt said in addition to excelling in three sports each year Channer has earned All-State and All-Conference awards. “He is role model for youth in our community because of his work-ethic and how he treats others around him,” Wirt said. “CHS is a better place because of everything Luke Channer has done for our school.” Channer plans to study at Montana State University. “I decided either pre-med or engineering and I had picked MSU over Montana Tech because I like Bozeman better,” he said. “They are both good engineering schools. I decided to go pre-med but I still want engineering in case I want a fall back plan. I’m pretty good at figuring out how things work.”
Channer said one of his first experiences in making that decision was a sledding accident in eighth grade that resulted in a “very nasty shoulder break.” “I broke the ball of my humerus off and broke my arm off to the side,” he said. “I got to see a lot of X-rays and see how bones grow. It was cool and it sparked my interest. I think bones are interesting. The rest of the body is all guts, but bones are fascinating. Making those replacement joints is like engineering a part to fit your body perfectly.” Channer said he loves all math and science classes and feels pre-med combines both of those subjects. He has taken chemistry, biology, statistics and anatomy. He has received perfect scores in advanced placement calculus classes. Channer said the second influence on his career choice was a medical mission trip he took to Haiti as a freshman. “There’s a hospital, but not many doctors,” he said. “The people that spend the time and money to become a doctor go to another country to make money. The people they have in Haiti are not trained to be a doctor.” Channer explained that his dad, a surgeon, goes to Haiti regularly and does hundreds of surgeries each trip. Channer explained that, as a teen, his job on the trip was to inventory medical supplies. “They have lots of donations of medical supplies but they don’t know what any of it is,” he said. “I also did construction. There the hospital is like a gym with 30 beds and no privacy. So, we build linoleum cabinets so they could put their possessions by their bed.” Channer said he sees the need in third world countries for bone specialists. “They had so many broken bones after the earthquake,” Channer said. “One man was trapped, cut his own leg off and rode 50 miles on a dirt bike to get help. They just need doctors. My dad is a general surgeon but I see a need for bone specialists. If I become an orthopedic surgeon I can go to these third world countries and donate my service and talents to them.” Channer said he enjoyed his years at Corvallis High School. “Everyone is super welcoming,” he said. “I feel we have one of the nicest, friendliest schools. We pretty much have no fights and everyone gets along. I feel like we have great teachers that really care about the kids.”

Darby senior Lily Lang MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
The forest is essential to Darby senior Lily Lang. She intends to have a career that allows her to work in the outdoors. “My goal is to major in forestry and possibly major in fire management. With that, I plan to get a job with the Forest Service and possibly become a wilderness ranger,” Lang said. “My mom and dad ran an outfitting business for 25 to 30 years and for as long as I can remember I spent every summer helping set that up.” Lang said family time in the forest inspired her passion. “When I was 5, I went on my first elk hunt with my dad and that really inspired a love and a passion for the outof-doors,” Lang said. Lang has only attended Darby schools for her educational career. Principal J.P. McCrossin said, “Lilly is involved in many different activities, is a leader, and great academic student.” Lang said she loves the small-school atmosphere. “I think it is really family-oriented,” Lang said. “The teachers are really supportive and I really enjoyed knowing everybody’s name. That helped me to be a better leader because I could connect with everyone.” Academically, Lang said she enjoyed all the math, physics and chemistry classes. “I really wanted to take an AP Environmental Science, but we didn’t have it,” Lang said. “I took dual credit math my junior and senior years, and dual credit English and government. Those were great to have.” Lang said she had an inner drive to learn the most. “I didn’t always have the competitive edge of my classmates. They were good students, but I had to push myself,” she said. “I will graduate with 13 col-

lege credits.” Lang said the Darby school provided opportunities. “I had many opportunities to join every single club but I think being in cross country, track and basketball helped me develop leadership skills,” Lang said. “I had to put everything into it and focus to do my best. I got out of it what I put into it.” She did volleyball her freshman year, cross county three years, track for years and basketball three years. She competed in indoor track for one year in Missoula. “It’s a club in Missoula,” she said. “It was a great experience but I went back to the Tiger team because it was a lot of driving back and forth to Missoula.” Lang will attend the Davidson Honors College at the University of Montana. “Going to UM will be great but being in the honors college will be an easier transition for me coming from a small school and going to a huge university,” she said. “It is a community. I’m really excited to be a part of another community.” Darby counselor Kurt Kohn said Lang “puts her best foot forward.” “She is a tremendous example of what we expect from our students at Darby as far as an academic leader, an athletic leader, a great over all person,” Kohn said. “She is very family oriented. Her family has been supportive of this school since she was in kindergarten and has a younger sister following in her footsteps.” Lang said that her sister affected her decision to attend the University of Montana. “One of my reasons for choosing Missoula is to be closer to her,” Lang said. “I would hate to miss her growing up. Having just one sibling, you are just so close. It will be a change for both of us but since I’ll only be an hour away it will be good.” Lang has no plans to compete in sports in college. “I had some offers to run but not from the University of Montana,” she said. “I’ve been considering walking on, but I am training for half marathons, marathons and triathlons so my running career isn’t over, I’m just switching it up a bit.” The week of May 12, Lang ranked fourth for the two mile in the Class C statewide poll. The one thing she is certain about is her career in the forest. “I’m hoping to be a wilderness ranger in Montana,” Lang said. “I’m hoping to stay here. I’m pretty rooted in Montana.”

Florence senior Rebecca Seegraber MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Florence-Carlton Schools senior Rebecca Seegraber’s favorite class is Advanced Placement Biology. She said she has always enjoyed studying biology and researching about animals. “I love studying life and searching out why things happen instead of just looking at the base layer,” Seegraber said. “Biology allows me to do that. We do some labs but it’s mostly learning from the AP Biology textbook and that study is mainly microbiology so it is at the cellular level.” Seegraber said Craig Kuchel is her biology instructor. “I had Mr. Kuchel as a sophomore and then for three more years,” Seegraber said. “He and the subject sparked my love for biological sciences. It has been very informative learning and he is a very nice teacher. I can ask questions and get extra help on the subject.” Kuchel said Seegraber’s mantra could be “Good enough is the enemy of excellence.” “Becky is an extremely quiet young woman. She diligently strives for the very best in everything she does,” he said. “I have had the great pleasure of having her in three of my year-long biology classes, two of them honors or AP classes. I wish I could have a hundred more students just like her.” Seegraber has attended Florence schools since kindergarten, as have her three older siblings. “It’s a small school but it is great for more interaction with the teachers and you get to know them personally,” she said. “There are a lot of opportunities with clubs and sports and there is a variety of extra classes in the curriculum that you can take.” Seegraber said she is one of the two salutatorians in her class of 74, one of the largest classes to graduate at Florence in 10 years. She has not participated in sports. “I swim a lot in the summer and I enjoy biking,” she said. “The rest of my free time I spend reading.” Her classic favorite is “The Catcher in the Rye.” Seegraber has participated in 4-H for eight years, Science Olympiad for three years, and two service organizations, Key Club and National Honor Society, for two years. “In Science Olympiad, you partner with another student for competition,” she said. The big competition is in Butte in November. My projects were on astronomy, anatomy and aerodynamics where you build a plane that had to fly as far as possible and also build a contraption that had to go a certain distance without cracking an egg.” Seegraber said she has many pets. “My favorite pets are my cats, I just love cuddling up with them and they
have unique personalities,” she said. “We mostly have goats. We had eight but just got nine babies in two weeks so currently we have 17. It’s mostly my job to help with that, it does take a lot of time but it is worth it.” Seegraber is planning to attend the University of Montana and live at home. She received the Montana University System Honor Scholarship that will pay for her tuition. “I’m thinking I want to study ecology,” she said. “I’ve been around animals my whole life and I just love watching them and their behavior. Ecology is the study of animals, the population level, how they interact with one another and the different species. I haven’t decided my career but it will probably include animals.” Seegraber’s parents, Frank Seegraber and Diana Andrews, are veterinarians at the Big Sky Veterinary Clinic in Missoula. “I admire that they take care of sick animals,” Seegraber said. “I have been around sick animals and it just makes me sad. I couldn’t do it as a profession. I do think it is an admirable career and they are very inspiring parents, for sure. They both have completed a lot of schooling so it has driven me to do the same. They are good role models.”

Kris, I closed my eyes for but a moment and suddenly a man stood where a boy use to be. I may not carry you now in my arms but I will always carry you in my heart. You have given me so many reasons to be proud of the man you have become, but the proudest moment for me is telling others that you are my son. I love you now and forever. ~Mom

Hamilton High School senior Casey Hammon Amy Conkel for the
Ravalli Republic
Hamilton senior Casey Hammond applied to 11 prestigious colleges and universities and was accepted at all 11 schools. He selected Georgetown University where he will study political science on a full-ride scholarship. Hammond credits the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America, LEDA, Program. He is Montana’s first LEDA scholar. “LEDA is about connecting underrepresented students to leadership positions,” Hammond said. “They see these prestigious universities as the nexus to those leadership positions.” The program improves college access for low-income students and teaches leadership, networking skills and self-confidence. “The LEDA support enables you, empowers you to seek out the schools and apply to all their resources,” Hammond said. Hammond applied to the program, was accepted and last summer spent seven weeks at the Princeton camp learning the life skills for success. At the camp, the scholars looked at elite colleges and programs. “I created a list of 11 schools ranging from likely schools to dream schools,” Hammond said. “I didn’t expect to get accepted to all 11. As the acceptance letters kept rolling in, the excitement kept building. I got accepted to my top three Georgetown, Brown and Wesleyan and I didn’t know what to do with myself.” Hammond had visited Georgetown and Wesleyan during the camp but he had not visited Brown University. Brown provided Hammond a travel grant to visit them. “I love it immensely, the atmosphere, people, the environment but I had to think what I wanted out of my school in terms of a perspective career and

since I want to be a politician, specifically work in the state department, it’s hard not to choose Georgetown because of its location in D.C.” Hammond said he considers himself a liberal. “Brown is full of liberals but since I see one of the biggest problems is polarization for political arena I saw myself attending Brown surrounded by a bunch of outspoken liberals,” he said. “If I want to create unity, I need a different atmosphere. Georgetown is a mix of outspoken liberals and outspoken conservatives so that was the deciding factor.” Hammond said he likes to argue and debate. “I’ve always been interested in political leaders, debates and how candidates carry themselves,” he said. “When I went to LEDA, I started taking politics classes and writing classes and I realize my skills were toward speaking, writing and social gathering. I loved that environment. I’m good at math and science but when it came to government I got excited to read my government text book.” Hammond said he is excited to listen to State of the Union address, realizes he wants to live his life in that environment and sees the need for political leaders. He notes leaders are different from politicians. “They used to be the same name but this polarization and this self-indulgence has created two different terms,” he said. “Leaders are no longer politicians. I want to become a leader that brings those terms back together.” At Georgetown, Hammond plans to major in government, with an emphasis in international politics, specifically on the Middle East. After a year, he plans to transfer in to their school of Foreign Service. “I want a nice balance of foreign and domestic policy,” he said. Hammond has lived in Montana all his life. He lives with his grandmother and mother. He practices Jujitsu at the Dog Pound, is president of Key Club, vice president of National Honor Society and a 4-H Mentor. He is the first in his immediate family to attend college. He said he feels that Hamilton High School has prepared him for college. “Georgetown has a phenomenal first generation program, which I’m excited to be part of,” Hammond said. “LEDA makes sure we have the support, networks and resources we need to be successful in college. I’ll be part of LEDA for life and be part of this network, this family,” he said. “After Leda the horizon got a lot wider, we’ll keep going and see where it lands. It is fantastic.” Hammond has attended Hamilton schools, K-12, and is one of 13 valedictorians. Principal Dan Kimzey said Hammond is an asset to the school. “His work ethic is beyond compare, he is a natural leader and he inspires others to better themselves,” Kimzey said. “He is an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing, which is evident in his acceptance by all 11 highly competitive universities he applied to attend.” Kimzey said he is proud of Hammond. “I can’t think of a nicer young man to have all of these golden opportunities at hand,” Kimzey said. “He will take full-advantage of those opportunities and will be a leader at the national level one day in the near future.”

Hamilton Christian Academy senior Savannah Bickish Amy Conkel for the
Ravalli Republic
Hamilton Christian Academy has their first high school graduate this year. Senior Savannah Bickish was home schooled through her sophomore year then transferred to the academy and completed the requirements for high school. Bickish said it was the perfect fit for her. “I love the people, I love the opportunities and I love the good, wholesome spirit that I’m working under too,” she said. “The teachers are really nice and classes are small so you get specialized time with each teacher. You get help with what you’re struggling with.” These years at the academy were her first to experience having a locker, going from class to class and being able to practice conversing in the language she was studying. “Being able to learn Spanish has been one of the best experiences with a teacher to practice and talk and get it down to learn and know it,” Bickish said. “I love English and History has always been one of my favorite subjects.” Bickish said she enjoyed the opportunities available for students at the Hamilton Christian Academy. Each week the high school students visited the Bitterroot FabLab for 3-D printing. The students at the academy started a club called Students Reaching Out and Volunteering. “We go to Council on Aging and we started serving and helping,” Bickish said. “We have adopted a highway and we’ll clean it the last week of school.” Bickish volunteers at the Bitterroot Humane Society and at home she raises sheep and moves irrigation pipe. She also knits, crochets, folk

dances and participates in martial arts. She participated in track and competed in the 100 meter, javelin and discus. Her team of three competed in the finals in Coeur d’Alene against schools from all over the region. Bickish said she appreciated the personal attention from teachers and counselors as they helped her map out life goals. “I’d like to go to Japan and learn Japanese. I feel like God is calling me to Japan,” She said. “I want to be a missionary over there and I’d also like to be an art teacher. I taught art to the third and fourth grade students at HCA. Being able to teach them has made me realize I really enjoy teaching. I never thought about being a teacher.” After graduation, Bickish said she will go to Bible College. She will study Faith Bible Institute on DVD’s through her church, Solid Rock Baptist Church. It is a class every Monday for a three-year program. Bickish plans to attend Bitterroot College and study towards a business degree. She has been taking art classes at the Bitterroot College. “Art is very hands-on and it is better in person with someone teaching you,” she said. Bickish won a trip to Washington D.C. as an ambassador for Ravalli Electric Cooperative. She won the essay contest by answering the question “How can REC reach out to the youth of the community to help them get involved?” “It was a one or two page essay and in June I get to go for a week with everything paid,” Bickish said. “We’ll see a lot of memorials and will go to the White House and have a dinner with a senator or representative. The REC pays for everything and even gives spending money. It’s a once-in-alifetime opportunity and I’m so looking forward to seeing history.” Hamilton Christian Academy administrator Stephanie Beck said she is excited to have a student graduate at from their program. “Savannah is a pleasure to work with, exemplifying the character traits and skills that every parent and teacher would like to see in their graduates: joy, diligence, self-advocacy and willingness while utilizing impressive communication skills,” Beck said. “She will make a difference in her world.”

Stevensville senior Rial Johnson MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Stevensville senior Rial Johnson enjoys music and computer programming. He has a big vision for his future, studying computer science at Montana State University then working in a big city. “I liked Bozeman and MSU offered me a full-tuition scholarship so I won’t have to pay for it,” Johnson said. “I got a scholarship based on my class rank of five with an ACT score that put me up there.” Johnson said he wants to do programming, web development and running websites. “Ideally, I would like to live in Austin, Texas, the growing technology center with a growing economy,” Johnson said. “I like the politics there and I really like the quality of life. It is the live music capitol of the world. Plus, it is a big city but it is not New York.” Johnson said his second choice for a place to live is Hong Kong. “It is a big business city and I’m fascinated with going and living in a big city,” he said. “It was under British rule for a hundred years so it is like eastern but also I wouldn’t be completely alienated there. I could find western food. It is one of the biggest business cities in the world and is the tallest city in the world. I’ve only been in Stevensville so the big cities attract me.” Johnson has attended Stevensville schools since second grade. He has had perfect attendance for 11 years. “My experience here is that the atmosphere is good,” he said. “I think if you let yourself enjoy it, you will. I have friends here.” He said he has had good opportunities and enjoyed the extra-curricular activities. He has com-
peted on the track team for four year on the distance team. He runs the two-mile, one-mile and for cross-country runs the three mile. Johnson has been in the band program since fifth grade. “I play percussion, mallet percussion and piano. I know how to play and read music,” he said. “We have an awesome band director, Jeremy Ruff. He has been really great. He is really engaged with us and we joke around but he also sets us straight and helps us produce good music. For not being the biggest program, we’ve put together a great sounding band and it’s cool to be involved in that.” Johnson said he is not certain he will join the MSU marching band “Spirit of the West” but he plans to continue to play music. “My father is a musician and we have a studio in our house,” he said. “He has played guitar every week for 40 years. I definitely want to stay in music.” Johnson said his favorite class is band but he also enjoys the history classes at Stevensville. “I like to learn about the political system and the history of our government,” he said. Principal Brian Gum said Johnson is an outstanding senior. “During Rial’s years at SHS he has been active in soccer, track, cross country and four years of participation in band,” Gum said. “Rial was also involved in the ‘SHS Top 5’ which participates in the yearly elementary school assembly, Bikes for Books. Rial is an all-around great kid, who I know will do big things in this world.”

Victor senior Austin Lewis MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Victor senior Austin Lewis plans to study integrated business entrepreneurship at North Idaho College. His goal is to make a business for manufacturing custom knives. Lewis has attended Victor schools since kindergarten. “I love the community feel here with a small school,” Lewis said. “Everyone seems to be friends with tight friend groups and a small class with only 14 seniors. Everyone gets along great and we know a lot about each other, like one big family.” His favorite sport growing up was basketball and he has participated in the Kiwanis All Star Basketball game for two years. He was team captain of the Pirates’ basketball team this year. They had a winning season but did not advance beyond regular season play. Lewis said he learned about leadership as team captain. “It was challenging and a big learning experience in terms of holding people accountable but in a constructive way and accepting my wrong, owning up to it and showing others what not to do,” Lewis said. “It was important for me to lead by example. During sprints I made sure I won every single sprint and never missed a single practice or was late. I just tried to make everyone their best.” Lewis is senior class president and was the junior class treasurer. He participated in FFA and was treasurer and sentinel. His favorite classes are government and shop. Lewis competed in football his freshman and sophomore years but traded that for work. He did track last year then selected work over that also. He works at Big Creek Dairy, his family’s farm. He makes custom knives on the side too. “I love making things,” Lewis said. “I’m constantly finding little ideas and deciding to make them instead of buying them. We have a 3-D printer at our school and I set that up, and configured it. It is a joy and a lot of fun.” Lewis said he enjoys Victor’s CNC machine that uses a computer to control machine tools. “I helped teach knife-making in shop class. That was a blast,” he said. “I just recently I made a wake board in shop class.” Lewis said he also loves politics and debating. “Everyone has their own opinion,” he said. “Politics are intriguing. I love the dynamics. I love getting facts. I research, probably two hours a night just on politics. I’ve researched for my business and I’m constantly researching and learning. I have a passion for learning.” Lewis said he is ready to attend college. “I want to create a business plan for a niche knife manufacturing business where people could order custom knives,” he said. “They could pick
out different knife handles and blade shapes and I would go to my computer and my CNC machine would cut it out and I would assemble it.” Lewis said he it would be a new and different market. “It would be fun to get with Cabela’s and have computer tablets in their knife area and you pick it out and swipe your card and get it sent to you,” he said. “That’s my dream and what I’m pursuing.” He selected North Idaho College because of its business program but also water access. “It is beautiful and right on the lake,” he said. “I love stand up jet skis and this is one of the things I do in the summer so it is a perfect fit for me.” Principal Dan Johnston said Lewis has developed into a leader in his class. “He is an independent thinker and makes decisions based on what he feels is best, rather than what his peers are doing,” Johnson said. “Austin is one who thinks and plans ahead. He knows what he is going to do and how he is going to do it before he begins.” Johnston said Lewis works hard in school. “Austin pays close attention to his grades and earned a 3.75 GPA for the last term,” Johnston said. “We are proud of Austin and his accomplishments as a Victor Pirate.”
