PERRY BACKUS-Ravalli Republic
Laine Jones of Stevensville puts on a big smile for the judge at the Ravalli County Fair Thursday.
Fair promises a mix of new fun and traditional delights PERRY BACKUS Ravalli Republic
As always, this year’s Ravalli County Fair and Rodeo promises to mix of something new and exciting with something traditional and expected. The fair opens Aug. 31 and runs through Sept. 3. “It’s still a very good deal,” said Ravalli County Fair Manager Deborah Rogala. “We haven’t raised our prices…there’s still no
charge for parking and no charge for the rodeo events.” If you’re an adult, it will cost you $9 to get through the gate. For seniors 60 and over, members of the military and students, the cost is $7. Children under five get inside free. One of the new events will happen the very first night of the fair when teams of cowboys take to the ring to participate in the fair’s first Rancher Rodeo. “People have been asking us to host one of these for several years,” Rogala said. “And now we’re going to do that.”

The rancher rodeo will take the place of a teen dance scheduled for that first Wednesday night. “The group that wanted to do the teen dance wasn’t able to pull it off,” Rogala said. “At the same time, we had people urging us to do a rancher rodeo. They told us there were rancher rodeos in Darby and Missoula. There were all these teams looking for a place to compete.” There will be eight teams competing at the event. “I love having these new events,” Rogala said. “It takes a group of people to bring an idea for a new event to fruition. It’s great when you see people from the community step forward and make something like this happen.” If fairgoers want to see another good example of a community coming together to make something happen, they should be sure to take a stroll by the 36 new horse pens adjacent between the vendor lawn and rodeo grounds. For the first time in years, the young 4-Hers who specialize in everything equine will have the opportunity to show their horses to people attending the fair because of the generosity of the community and Cowpoke Ranch Supply of Corvallis. “We wanted to bring horses back to the fair,” Rogala said. “People like to see them and talk to the kids about their projects.” The new pens will also be there
“People just love the petting zoo,” Rogala said. “It’s been about four years since it was here last.” When it comes time to settle into the grandstand to watch some rodeo action, the more astute rodeo observer will notice there’s a new stock contractor in town. Redeye Rodeo has been consistently winning with best bulls and broncs on the national circuit this year. “We’re happy that they are going to be here,” Rogala said. The NRA rodeo will be held Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 2-3, starting at 7 p.m. A new stock contractor isn’t the only thing different about this year’s rodeo. Spectators will also have a chance to watch some upand-coming bull and bronc riders when the Montana Mini Buckers come to town. “It’s a new association that working to promote rough stock riding,” Rogala said. “They’ll bring kids from around the state.” On Thursday night at 7 p.m., there’s a Bull-A-Rama and Cowboy Bronc Riding contest that comes with unusually colorful twist. “We will be adding four bulls painted pink that night,” Rogala said. “There will be $500 added per bull. If the bull wins, the money goes to Tough Enough To Wear Pink Montana. If the cowboy wins, the money goes into
for people coming to other events throughout the year. “We will be able to rent them out,” Rogala said. “It will be an additional source of income for the fairgrounds.” When people finish visiting with kids about their horses, they can wander over near the goat barn where they’ll find some highflying entertainment with iFlip, an aerial acrobatic team complete with a high wire and trampoline act. “People are going to really like them,” Rogala said. “It’s going to be some great high-flying excitement for the fair.” A nice way to calm down after that will be take a trip through the petting zoo by the fairgrounds’ west gate. For families with young children, there’s a chance to create a few memories with a pony ride at the zoo.
his pocket.” Speaking of color, Rogala said another new event features the work of people involved the new trend of coloring for adults. The fairgrounds partnered with the Bitterroot Public Library to put on a show on Aug. 28th. “We’re going to give out a people’s choice award,” she said. “People will be able to vote for which one they like. It’s something that’s new that that’s happening in our community. We just wanted to find a way to showcase it.” The only new food vendor this year is certain to a popular stop for those wanting a hearty meal. Hamilton’s Mineshaft Pasty Company will have a booth at the fair. “Oh, fair food,” Rogala said. “I can’t wait to have some of it.”

Corvallis residents Carolyn and Darrel Sperry have been working the land, producing crops and food for generations in the Bitterroot Valley. They and are honored as the 2016 Ravalli County Fair Farm Family of the Year.

hay, potatoes, barley, corn, mint and soybeans. They continue to be strong supporters of the 4-H program and the fair. By age 5, Darrell drove tractor and milked cows. He started 4-H in 1955 with a Holstein Angus calf as his first project. He stayed in 4-H for eight years doing woodworking, beef steers, cow, calf, vegetables and rabbits. “When I was 10, I started growing rabbits for the lab in Hamilton,” Sperry said. “I grew a lot of them. We’d haul in eight to ten each week for a couple of years, then the lab quit buying rabbits like that.” In grade school he remembers looking out the windows of the school and watching the neighbors preparing the ground for planting beets. “When I was in the seventh or eighth grade I wanted to join the Future Farmers of America,” Darrel Sperry said. “When I was in the eighth grade I helped the FFA kids plant potatoes. I couldn’t wait to be in the program but that fall when I got to high school they dropped the FFA class.” FFA did not return to Corvallis until the fall of 2015. In 1960 at age 14, Darrel started farming independently by renting 10 acres from a neighbor and growing oats that he sold to the Misco Feeds feed store, now Safeway, in Hamilton. He worked for his uncle during his school years. “I’d get off the school bus, go to the field and drive tractor or I would go to the potato cellar and help,” he said. “In summer I
would mow hay, rake hay and drive tractor with the farm hands to buck bales to stack.” In 1965, Darrel married Carolyn Mitchell, worked at the sawmill, ran the farm and 1966-67 rented 100 acres from the Christofferson Farm. “We lived in Grantsdale at the time and he would go to the sawmill at 6 a.m. then go straight to the field,” Carolyn said. “There were lots of days I didn’t see him. He would just crawl into bed occasionally.” Darrel remembers that 1967 was a great year: he bought his first John Deer tractor (a 1957 model) and his son, Shayne, was born. The family grew hay, barley and corn silage for years. Carolyn and Darrel’s children (Kristi, Shayne and Renee) and grandchildren (Tenaya, Briden, Bryce, Chance and Cresten) have all been very active in 4-H and the Ravalli County Fair. Last year grandson Chance, age 9, received a blue ribbon on his pig that in the carcass evaluation received the top rank in the county and for all of Montana. In 1973, the Darrel and Carolyn bought the dairy from his uncle and moved to Corvallis. They were milking about 90 head and farming about 600 acres. They raised 25 to 35 sows and continually kept 350 to 450 pigs in the fattening pen. They sold 10 fat hogs a week to Daily’s Meats in Missoula until 1985. In 1986, when Safeway’s milk plant in Butte shut down the Sperry’s hauled grade B milk to Salmon, Idaho, and Bozeman.

Then came the dairy buy-out and they got out of the dairy business. In 1989, they grew 125 to 130 acres of peppermint, processed it at the Parker’s cannery and then bought a used 350-horse highsteam boiler from Louisiana. “We had a lot of complaints,” Carolyn said. “People said ‘Ugh - that stinks, what are you doing?’ ‘It makes my eyes water.’ It was very, very strong.” The Sperry’s processed mint for other mint farmers as well but the market fell away when China sold mint for less. The Sperry’s could not compete; they stored barrels of oil for five years and then had to sell it before it turned rancid. “The Essential Oils from Maine was the only company that would offer any type of price,” Carolyn said. “We had to pay the freight to Maine on all those barrels.” Today, Darrel, Carolyn, and Shayne run the farm, with help from their grandchildren. They have about 800 acres and grow alfalfa, hay, corn (which they combine) and soybeans (meal for dairies and bio-fuel). Darrel has been president of the Tired Iron club, restoring tractors since 2000. The family has many entries into the fair each year. Darrel supplies antique farming equipment for displays in the First Interstate building, the agriculture building and the Tired Iron Club. He also gives demonstration of thrashing oats, press
bailing and his old one-lung engines. He assists with the Corvallis parade and helped build the Cornerstone Church. Carolyn said her son and husband have green blood – “John Deere green,” she said. “It’s a hobby,” Darrel said. “I still haven’t figured out why I wanted to be a farmer.” “God made him a farmer,” Carolyn said. “There was never anything else in his life. Period.”

Fair volunteers receive meritorious awards KATELYN ANDERSEN MSU Extension Agent
Fair food, free music, volunteers, rodeos and 4-H animals are standard parts of fair, especially here in Ravalli County. All of these (among other things) are important to making the fair happen. While our 4-H members have been working hard all year in anticipation to show their projects off to the county, our 4-H volunteers have had monthly meetings to discuss the parts to improve during fair and make this upcoming fair the best ever. One way the 4-H program has provide recognition to our volunteers is the Meritorious Service Awards. This has been a tradition since 1971 to give an extra thank you and recognition from Ravalli County 4-H to people and businesses in the community that have gone the extra mile to support the 4-H program. There are three divisions: Business, Adult and Youth to help honor the various types of volunteers. The award recipients will

Chris Thorson has provided leadership to Ravalli County 4-H for the past 29 years.
Chris Thorson – Adult Recipient Chris Thorson has been a 4-H leader for 29 years with Ravalli County 4-H. He immediately started volunteering with the program after he graduated from Corvallis High School. Chris was taught how to mark the animals during the livestock sale as a young adult and has been in charge of this task ever since. Marking the animals is one of the key components of the sale but it is definitely behind the scenes. We can depend on him for this part of the fair as well as helping in the Swine Barn as a co-superintendent and judging on NonPerishable Judging Day. Over the years, he has taught welding workshops for his club and on a county-wide activity. Plus, he has served on the 4-H Advisory Council for a few terms. He is currently a leader of the Summerdale 4-H club. Chris is a really quiet, laid-back individual who would not seek any recognition on his own so give him a big thank you the next time you see him in our community!

Horses have new temporary homes at fairgrounds FLINT MCCOLGAN For
the
Ravalli Republic
Horses have a new home at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. Well, make that 26 new homes. The new horse pens are butted up against the chain-link fence that separates the rodeo grounds from the grass vendor lawn at the fair a little southwest of the warm up arena, said Cryss Anderson, the fairground’s office manager. She said it’s been a while since the fair has had a permanent place for horses and that many people are excited for the change. The whole thing came about through the work of different groups starting with the Bitterroot Cowboy Ball in February, which chose the project as one it wanted to raise funds for, Anderson said. Then the fairgrounds shopped around and found that Cowpoke Ranch Supply in Corvallis would sell them the pens at cost, said Larry Ray, an outside sales rep for the supply store. The fair already had some funds so he said the store and the fair split the $10,000 cost in exchange for Cowpoke to have a merchandise booth at the fair and place a little advertising. Anderson said the pens will actually be revenue generators because they can be rented out year-round. The first major show will be when 4-H participants show their horses on Aug. 27 at 8 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m., the Saturday before the fair, said Shawnna Medlar, the 4H superintendent. But the kids couldn’t wait to get a look at the new pens, so they came and set them all up last month in a barbecue, Ray said. The pens are “very durable” and of the highest quality, Ray said, so 4H and fair horse showers should get enjoyment out of them for years to come.

Ranch Rodeo is a new event
File photo
MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
The Rockin’ RC committee is presenting Ranch Rodeo as the competition and entertainment for Wednesday night of the Ravalli County Fair. Competitors will race to complete the jobs cowboys and cowgirls do regularly such as branding, sorting, doctoring, loading and milking a wild cow. There are five members on a team and
one most be a member of the opposite gender. Jean Schurman, committee member, said the event is significant. “It is kind of a salute to the working cowboy, if you will,” Schurman said. “These are working cowboys and cowgirls that do these activities every day.” Schurman said the event is a big draw with high competition, high dollar prizes and bragging rights at stake. “It will be determined by skill, how you handle your horse, how

you handle a rope, how you handle the cattle,” she said. “It is timed, but competitors have to know how to read cattle and have a lot of trust in their team.” Schurman said Kim Jones of Stevensville was a key organizer for the Ranch Rodeo and rodeo contractor Kaehl Berg is providing the animals. There are eight teams from Dillon, the Bitterroot Valley and throughout western Montana. “There is a pretty strong circuit, actually,” Schurman said. “It will be pretty intense competition, but that’s the cowboy way. Walking across the street becomes ‘I’m going to get their first.’” Details of the competitions are very specific. For the calf branding competition, three calves are branded with a flour paste. The brand must be in the same location on all three calves. Time starts when the first team member

enters the branding pen and stops when the third calf is on its feet with the ropes off. In team sorting, competitors have twominutes to take five designated head out of a herd and move them across the line, non-designated cattle across the line results in disqualification. Team doctoring has a two-minute limit to rope and tie down the designated steer that must remain down for six seconds. For the trailer loading competition, the team has two-minutes to load a designated steer and two horses in the trailer and close the gate before getting in to the pickup. Ranch bronc riding requires the contestant to stay on for eight seconds. The ride will be judged on style, control, creativity and degree of difficulty. Schurman said that in stock saddle bronc riding riders may grab anything that helps them get the job done.

“That’s not to say the horses are less bucking,” she said. For the wild cow milking, eight cows are in the arena and all the teams compete at once. They rope the cow, mike her while she is standing, take the ropes off, take the milk in the container to the judge and the first one there wins. “The wild cows are momma cows that haven’t been handled a lot. The competitors have to get enough milk to pour,” Schurman said. “It is pretty wild and wicked.” Bitterroot Valley resident Kari Trexler and her family have competed in many Ranch Rodeos with great success. Most recently, they have won in Darby and Missoula. She said Ranch Rodeo is a good time. “It is fast, furious and the crowd loves the event,” Trexler said. Schurman said the Ranch Rodeo is not like a regular production planned in detail with spreadsheets.
“There are five different people on each team and so the chances of something unexpected happening just adds to the drama,” she said. This is the first year for Ranch Rodeo at the Rockin’ RC fair and Schurman is positive people will enjoy the event. “It’s a piece of history and a piece of our heritage,” she said. “Fast horses, good cowboys and cowgirls are something people don’t see as much anymore. I think if people give it a chance and they will get hooked on it.” Gate fees to attend the Ravalli County Fair include admission to all grandstand events. Enjoy the competition and entertainment of the Ranch Rodeo starting at 7 p.m. on August 31.

Henry Smith serves as 4-H state ambassador Stacie Duce Ravalli Republic
Seventeen-year-old Henry Smith will be spending every day at the Ravalli County Fair – just like he has for the last eight years. But this year, he won’t focus entirely on his goat projects or market sales, he’ll also be acting as a one of five state 4-H ambassadors. Ravalli County Extension Agent Katelyn Anderson said she is proud of Smith and his accomplishments and said it’s the first time in more than a decade that a local 4-H youth has served as a state ambassador. “Being selected as a state ambassador officer is one of the highest achievements a youth can attain through the Montana 4-H program,” Montana 4-H Director Todd Kesner said. “He will have opportunities to promote the 4-H program, teach other youth, coordinate service learning projects, serve on Extension advisory committees and work alongside adult volunteers to plan and implement

educational programs.” Smith said he’s served as a local ambassador and helped with Ravalli County’s teen council, 4-H Fun Day, the Fourth Grade Farm Fair and officer training. “But being a state ambassador is a huge step up,” Smith said. Smith has spent the summer traveling to county fairs across Montana. Recently he was in Billings at the Yellowstone County Fair and also spent every day at the fairs in Lewis & Clark County, Lake County, Mineral County and Missoula County. “It’s been great,” he said. “I’ve survived on fair food since 4-H Congress and I’ll be honest, my stomach is not happy about it. It’s those deep-fried cheese curds – I do have a problem. The Missoula lady called me her best customer, so that’s not really a good sign.” Smith said he’s learned a lot from different leadership and fair events hosted across the state, but it’s also made him appreciate local 4-H youth. “Something I’ve seen at other fairs that is that a lot of these kids don’t smile when they do showmanship,” he said. “I’ve realized that in Ravalli County, a lot of our kids are smiling. They’re showing and enjoying themselves and I’m very proud of that. I’m

super proud of our fair and how well it’s run. “Something I want to bring back? We need little kids’ animal costume contests – those are the cutest things ever,” he said. “We’ll have to see if we can put something like that together at our fair. I’ve also seen quite a few ambassador teams working really well – especially the smaller fairs. They work really well helping superintendents and putting on different activities throughout the fair – keeping the 4Hers entertained while they’re at the fair all week. That’s a really good thing to do.” Smith and his family live on a small farm in Victor. “We’ve always had sheep and goats on our far,” he said. “It was a hobby for my parents and they were really good at passing that along to us. At some point when I was 9, my mom said, ‘You’re going to go do 4-H this year.’ She gave me the choice between sheep and goats and I decided, ‘Goats are a little cuter, so I’ll go with goats.’” He said he had a lot of fun raising goats for market and usually names them after politicians. “Right now I’ve got a goat with really white hair that we’ve named Bernie Sanders,” he said. “We’ve had other goats named after politicians in the past and we find it kind of funny.”

But in addition to his animal projects, Smith said he was always drawn to the leadership side of 4-H. “I’ve had plenty of other leadership programs throughout my teenage life, but 4H got me started in that direction,” he said. Smith has been participated in the HOBY leadership conference, was an officer in Future Farmers of America, Business Professionals of America, student council and other club leadership positions at school. This year he will serve as senior class president at Hamilton High School and plans to take his skills to school to implement programs and get other students involved. “One of the things I pride myself in is my communication skills,” he said. “4-H really helped teach me good ways to communicate with my peers as well as those I’m leading. It’s not necessarily about taking charge and being a dominant voice in a room, but leading a group discussion or turning ideas into action. I’m really looking forward to getting things rolling in our school this year.”

Carnival lights By Dominic “Flominic” Farrenkopf Inspired by Phil Connelly’s 2016 Fair Theme
At the end of our summer as it slowly fades away, I wind my way to the fairgrounds where I’ll spend the whole day.
I start with the Tilt-A-Whirl, it’s my favorite ride. A boy takes the middle his dad and I take the outside.
My wife always finds me a couple hours after dark, after the carnival, on this old man, has left a mark.
I walk through the exhibits and all the animal barns, play Lion’s Bingo then watch the fiber artists make yarns.
I ride the Paratrooper and Yo-Yo as a single, to find a Zipper partner I merely have to mingle.
My last ride of the night is always the Ferris Wheel. My wife and I ride together it’s our little deal.
I get a Pink Lady apple and some Boy Scout ice cream then walk through the vendor booths where the entrepreneurs scheme.
There’s always a high school pair where one will ‘chicken out.’ I’ll ride with the brave one, together we’ll holler and shout.
Because after all these years, inside I’m still just a kid so I take my wife up just like I always did.
Next I stand in line for an all-day carnival ride pass. I stand right out as I’m of the senior citizen class.
I’ll pop balloons with darts and try to shoot out the red star and convince the carnie I still fit in the Dragon’s car.
She giggles at the top when I scooch over for a kiss. Just us, alone, in the night sky— now that’s carnival bliss!
I can think of no better way to spend my western nights than at The Ravalli County Fair… under carnival lights!
