Corvallis senior Sarah Cerdena STACIE DUCE Ravalli Republic
For Sarah Cerdena, her path is clear. But she’s well aware that life doesn’t always work out as planned. She will graduate as valedictorian and student body president at Corvallis High School and next on the list: “I will be attending Seattle stacie duce/ravalli republic University majoring in political science and journalism with a minor in women’s studies,” she said. “I’d love to eventually be a federal district judge, but I know I’ll be involved in the judicial branch in some way, shape or form. “Growing up, my mom instilled in me a sense of balance and to take into account all sides of an argument,” she said. “Studying constitutional law would be the best way to apply those values. I’d love to go to law school at Georgetown.” Tragically, Sarah will forge forward without her mom being able to witness the manifestation of good parenting. Sarah’s mom unexpectedly passed away a week into the summer break after freshman year. “That summer was very hard,” Sarah said. “I came back to school and for the next six months, I pretended like nothing happened. But I finally broke down and because of the environment and community at Corvallis High, I was taken care of and mentored. They gave me a chance to get back up and they taught me how to stand on my own. There’s no replacing a deceased parent, but the people here are so capable and so compassionate that it wasn’t hard to find support.” She said she’s developed a lot of self-confidence “in pushing through
and staying on top of my studies.” For all her accomplishments, she said, “I think I’m most proud of the way I include other people. The connections I have with other people are what I’ll keep after graduation. Grades are one thing, but I have solid friends and great mentors in the teachers, administrators and counselors – those are the things I’ll be grateful for forever.” In addition to student council, Sarah was involved in National Honor Society, was yearbook editor and was involved with the Interact club and choir. She was captain of the drama team for speech and debate and has been a dancing instructor for years. “Maybe because of my hardships, I’ve learned how to be a well-rounded person,” she said. “I’d like to say I’m good in the things I’m involved in, but more importantly, I’ve gained perspective. I believe, the more you’re involved, the more you’re open to new things and understanding other people’s perspectives.” She said her involvement in local dance studios also allowed her to be a mentor in the community. “I have found that sharing my passion for dance with young girls and showing them that you can fall in love with art is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” Sarah said. “Turning on the music and watching their faces light up and then seeing them on stage is such a wonderful feeling. “Dance allowed me an outlet to express my horrible and heart-wrenching emotions in a healthy way,” she said. “I was using that as an outlet for sure and I enjoy giving back.” Sarah said she’s developed maturity not typical for someone her age. “I’ve learned that I’m okay with being me. And I can help others be elevated to whatever position they want to be at. I feel a great sense of community and camraderie because of my accomplishments, not necessarily, ‘Hey look at me’ attitude. I’ve definitely turned outward and I’m looking forward to that continuing at college.”

Darby senior Jessica Finks STACIE DUCE Ravalli Republic
When Jessie Finks’ father passed away before her eighth grade year, the tragedy had a devastating affect on her and her academic progress. “Basically, I failed math in eighth grade, and I had to double up my freshman year,” she said. “I (continued) doubling up in math through my junior year so it was a lot of math really fast and I think it actually helped me learn a lot better.” Darby High guidance counselor Kurt Kohn said, “Failing a class and then rebounding to where she took math above and beyond the state requirements is truly amazing. That doesn’t happen very often for someone to come back and earn a top spot as salutatorian.” Jessie enrolled in four dual-credit classes this year – pre-calculus, anatomy and physiology, college writing and U.S. government – and will be entering college with a serious jump-start. “It was really hard for me to come back from the loss of my dad,” she said. “But with a lot of encouragement, I decided I didn’t want to feel like that anymore. I wanted to do a good job and make him proud.” Jessie is also proud of the chance she had to fundraise with other Darby High students and travel to Europe twice with the Spanish Club. “Our first trip was to Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain,” she said. “In March we went to Portugal and Spain. It was amazing.” She said growing up in Darby was a great experience. “I appreciate how small it is and how easy it is to get help or seek advice

from teachers. It’s a lot more personal than a larger school might be,” she said. “I played volleyball a bit and tennis for four years,” she said. “My doubles partner and I have been division champs for the last two years and we’ll be competing at State this weekend. “I’m really proud of the work ethic I learned doing concessions for Spanish Club and the countless fundraisers all year long - like Murdoch’s gift wrapping over Christmas break and making pies at Thanksgiving,” she said. Jessie will be attending the University of Montana this fall and is considering nursing or owning her stacie duce/ravalli republic own business someday. Jessie gives credit to her mom for her success, “Taking on the role of two parents is pretty hard and I’m glad she did such a good job being stable,” she said. “She works really hard to pay our bills and school expenses. I just think she was a really good mom.” Through the tragedy, Jessie has emerged kinder and gentler. “The way she treats others is what we dream of for all our students,” Kohn said. “Every school system would want a Jessie. She does not say negative things about others and maintains a positive nature even in tough times. She treats everyone respectfully. I believe the way you treat others – your interpersonal skills – trumps everything else. What you know, how well you can read and write is less important than being kind and that’s what Jessie exemplifies.” Jessie is the daugher of Mitrianna Finks and the late Colin Finks.

Florence senior Chase Windmueller STACIE DUCE Ravalli Republic
Chase Windmueller is headed to Baylor University this fall on a generous scholarship, but knows his path will eventually lead to playing brass for a military band. He said he had no interest or aptitude in music until fifth grade when he held a band instrument for the first time. “I started playing oboe for two weeks but realized I sounded like a dying cow and thought I should probably change instruments,” he said. “My friend Derek was sitting on the back row and I wanted to sit by him, so I switched to trombone.” That seemingly simple choice plowed the way for Chase to become one of the best multi-instrumental brass band students in the country. “I may not be the best at sports or the best academically, but apparently I do really well when I blow into a hunk of metal,” he quipped. A hunk of metal is what you could call the first baritone Chase tried. “My music teacher had a baritone sitting in the corner of the room that had been hit by a truck,” he said. “He had fixed it up and let me try it and eventually I took it home. The trumpet and the baritone have the same fingering, so my brother, Cade, taught me a few things. Trombone music reads the same, so I was able to use my other music.” The same thing happened with his first euphonium. His teacher, Doug McCauley, had an old, fixed-up instrument that Chase played for awhile but wasn’t able to range as high and low as he could play. Eventually, his grandmother bought him a quality euphonium for Christmas and now … “He is perhaps one of the best high school euphonium players this side of the Mississippi River,” Ben Kirby, Chase’s private instructor, said. “When you hear him play, you know you are hearing something extraordinary.” Chase attended his first few years of high school at Big Sky and earned All-State and All-National honors for band. He transferred to FlorenceCarlton High this year and has thrived in its music program as well. He attended All-Nationals for band students in Grapevine, Texas earlier this year. “Chase is the most passionate, talented, committed, hardworking young musician I have ever observed,” Band director Jennifer Kirby said. “He thrives off the energy that high level music-making gives him. It is extremely uncommon to find a person with so many musical accomplishments at his age.” Chase said, “I play anything that’s brass because they all kind-of work the same. But I’ve been working on learning the piano and I taught myself to play the ukulele. And for some reason, I found it necessary to learn to
play the Irish pennywhistle.” He gives much credit to his private music instructors for his prodigy-paced progress. “Ben Kirby works at the university and my lessons with him have been invaluable,” Chase said. “He’s given me all the tools I need to get a lot better. When I was in ninth grade, he gave me a professional piece Fantasia di Concerto by Eduardo Boccalari and said, ‘Learn it.’ So I did. That’s what’s taken me from where I was to where I am now.” Chase took a break from playing in the University of Montana’s Wind Ensemble to play football and run track for Florence his senior year and enjoyed the diversion. But he knows music – stacie duce/ravalli republic whether playing in a military band, earning a degree in music performance and/or embarking on a solo professional career – will always be his jam. Chase is the son of Mari Reynolds-Windmueller of Florence & C.Ray Windmueller of Missoula.

Hamilton Christian Academy senior Rico Wirick STACIE DUCE Ravalli Republic
As the first graduate of the newly accredited high school program at Hamilton Christian Academy, Rico Wirick is both humbled and grateful. “I was born in the Philippines, just outside Manila,” he said. “I had eight brothers and sisters and lived in poverty. Two of my older brothers were always in trouble so we were separated. I lived for about seven or eight years in an orphanage until my sister, Alice, and my brother, Richard, and I were adopted six years ago. So far, it’s been great. It’s a privilege to be here, but it is different. I miss some of the food in the Philippines and the winter, well, it’s very cold here.” Rico said he first attended public school in the Philippines and then a private school for several years that was more structured. “The education there is very different,” he said. “I wasn’t dedicated. I was always going and doing my own thing and didn’t really tell my parents what needed to be done. I was free and wandered. “Coming here, it’s very organized and there’s more loving people and teachers and friends that you encounter,” he said. “You can kind-of see the love around here more than in the Philippines – there’s not much of that over there.” Rico said his future would have been uncertain after spending so many years in an orphanage. “I would guess I would probably be on the streets right now like my two brothers were,” he said. “I’d be a beggar.” Rico had some catching up to do when he first enrolled at Hamilton Christian Academy. “I was behind,” he said, “especially with English, grammar and speaking correctly. Also some of the history of the United States was new to me so I had to catch up with a lot of that, but mostly it was a lot of language stuff that I struggled with and had to work on.” His senior year, he said an internship with Beck Builders was piv-
otal in meeting the requirements for graduation. “I worked with many different trades – electricians, HVAC, painting, excavation, carpentry and framing,” he said. “ I learned how to set concrete footings, bookkeeping and manager assistance. Paul (Beck) is great and is basically the reason I’m able to graduate with all my hours.” Rico plans to continue working in the construction business and save up money for college. He’d like to be a veterinarian for small animals someday. “We have five dogs at our house, all different breeds, so I’m already practicing,” he said. “I’m also big on church events, so I’m hoping to be involved in the ministries in our church,” he said. “I did the pastor appreciation dinner for all the pastors in the valley on March 12, 2017. I was in charge of everything – decorating, serving, organizing and also speaking to the pastors, which I found very scary. But it was a good experience.” His favorite courses at HCA are his stacie duce/ravalli republic Bible study classes. “This year, we studied about the history of the kings in the Old Testament and how some of them were pleasing to the eyes of God and some weren’t and so they fell,” he said. “We also looked deep at the story of Abraham and Isaac. We started in Genesis and went all through the Kings. “Personally, I mostly enjoy the New Testament,” he said, “the parables of Jesus and the process of confessing and believing.” HCA Director Stephanie Beck said, “Rico has worked very hard to gain the academic skills needed to succeed in American education. HCA was able to provide him with English teachers and a customized program to allow him to succeed and to graduate. He is an amazing young man.” Rico is he son of Wendy and Les Wirick of Hamilton.

Stevensville senior Liam LeCoure STACIE DUCE Ravalli Republic
With his brother and father as role models, Liam LeCoure plans to follow in their footsteps, earn a finance degree and become a finance manager in the automotive industry. But first, he’ll play a little more baseball. “When I got the call from a college coach who said, ‘You have true potential to be a collegiate pitcher. We want to help you develop your talents and give you an opportunity at the next level,’ No doubt. I was excited,” he said. Liam is proud of his Academic All-State honors in football and basketball for the last two years and has worked hard for the accomplishment. “Tutoring has helped me a lot,” he said. “Stevensville High started the early-morning tutoring program my freshman year. So I’ve been able to do my homework before school and then go to practice after school.” He said he’s spends about an hour in the tutoring lab at least two or three mornings a week and more often when tests or projects are due. “Before major tests or when I’ve got a heavy load of work, I’ll go in and bust it out before school,” he said. Some of his favorite high school memories are pivotal moments on the football field where he played quarterback. “I’ll always remember our senior night for football,” he said. “We played Corvallis. It was our last game of the season and we knew we were not going to make the playoffs. We were down by one touchdown with three seconds left. I looked at my friend Cody and we knew we needed to go for it. It was the last play of
the game and I threw a hook. He tried to throw it back to another receiver so he could run. But it didn’t work out. We ended up losing the game, but it was one of those brotherhood moments. I’ll admit there were tears and lots of mixed emotions. But I’ll always remember that.” Liam is grateful to have grown up in Stevensville, “I love the atmosphere here. It’s a great hometown. Everybody knows everybody and students and teachers all get along well,” he said. “The studentto-teacher ratio is great. If you have a question, you’re able to go right to your stacie duce/ravalli republic teacher and they’re super patient and understanding.” Stevensville High Principal Brian Gum said, “Liam is a great student-athlete at Stevensville High School. What I like about Liam is he is thoughtful to others and is always trying to help people out. He generally cares about his fellow students in the Stevensville community.” Liam has loved playing Legion baseball and the friends he has made from all over the valley. “Baseball has allowed me to play sports year-round, stay conditioned and has given me the opportunity to play a sport in college,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to the next level and improving my abilities as a pitcher.” Liam is the son of Joe and Tanya LeCoure of Stevensville.

Valedictorian Jesse Pearson is proof that attending a smaller, rural school is no obstacle in preparing for a global, high-tech business world. He has been a member of Victor’s Business Professionals of America Club that recently competed nationally with a Top 10 awarded animation project. “I took Victor’s 3-D Animation class kind of randomly my freshman year,” he said. “I’ve ended up taking it every year after and worked on a lot of projects for BPA. We learned to model and create worlds with characters and then animate them to turn them into videos. It was fun. “This year, we kind of took it to the next level and had to create a water park attraction and animate it,” he said. “We created a video showing off the attraction and took it to competitions as a business proposal.” He said outside of his other standard classes, he’s also grateful for the required personal finance course. “I didn’t really expect myself to enjoy that class,” he said “But it was actually really interesting and helpful. I definitely feel more prepared for real life now.” Jesse will be studying environmental science courses at Carlton College in Minnesota. He’ll also be playing running back for their football team. “It’s definitely been my goal to play football in college,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing, but Minnesota will be different. I’m going to miss the mountains – it’s pretty flat out there.”
He said he’ll also miss his classmates and community. “Victor is really good school and our community is very supportive of both academics and athletics,” he said. “We really get to know our classmates and our teachers. They’re easy to work with. Even though it’s a small school, they get you the classes you need.” Jesse has been dual-enrolled in calculus and has taken several online digital photography courses. “You can do a lot of independent studies to fit classes in your schedule to get all the credits you need,” he said. “English, chemistry and physics are my strongest classes. They were challenging but at the same time, not overwhelming. I’ve really like having challenging classes where you didn’t feel like you were going to die everyday, but were still stretched throughout the week.” Jesse has had part-time summer jobs cleaning the schools in the district and his favorite service projects have been beautifying the community and the cemetery. provided window “My parents have been really supportive of me to help me achieve whatever I wanted to achieve,” he said. “They’ve pushed me to be better and make sure I’m good at academics and athletics and at the same time they’re understanding if I’m struggling. They’ve both been very good at pushing me in the right ways to end up doing better, keeping my grades up and keep working hard athletically. It definitely helps to be organized, but also to have great parental support makes a big difference.” Jesse is the son of Lance Pearson and Herma Chanin.
