new display along the walls on old barn wood in the Agriculture barn. Superintendent Pat Miller and co-superintendent Al Sperry added the tools in early August to “spruce things up.” Most of the old items seem familiar some defy modernization. The potato fork is recognizable as the tips have balls to not pierce a potato while digging. There is a tool that is used to remove steer horns instead of using a saw, a special long tool for stirring a five gallon can of milk and a small scythe-looking tool for pulling beets out of the ground and cutting their tops off. “That was when they did it by hand,” Sperry said. “They used to raise a lot of beets, especially by the train tracks by Moeller’s. They raised them, dug them out and put them on a train to Missoula. They did a lot of beets in the valley.” The items are purchased from local antique stores but most are from local farms and especially from Darrel and Carolyn Sperry’s farm. “Darrel will probably enter some of them into the antique category,” Al Sperry said. “I’ll probably add some names and details so people

can learn about old-time farming and gardening equipment.” Fermentation is the newest category that was introduced last year with categories like cucumbers, peppers, hot mixed vegetables and sauerkraut. “We have a bunch of people interested in fermentation,” Sperry said. “We have kimchi. I’m going to do raspberries. We are working on getting more fermentation entries.” The Porcelain Art Department has beautifully hand painted pieces of porcelain and hand sculpted porcelain pieces. “We have a table set up and we do demonstrations throughout the fair time,” Superintendent Jolie Wells said. “We’d love to show you how it’s done and we’d love to get some new people interested in the art. My best memories of fair are just going to the fair itself – making yourself almost sick on the rides and meeting friends. And of course, eating fair food – ‘cause there just isn’t any substitute!!” Mary Gehl, superintendent of the Baked Goods

to one of 20 clubs, and are supported by over 150 4-H registered leaders. Close to 2,000 youth yearly receive education and services through the MSU Extension Office in Ravalli County, making it the 2nd largest 4-H program in the state. (For those who are wondering, Yellowstone County has the largest program). While participation in the fair isn’t a required part of the 4-H program, it is a strong tradition and a way to showcase all the hard work the members completed throughout the year. Members can take projects in a wide range of activities, ranging from swine to goats, horses to rabbits, photography to cooking, outdoor adventure to robotics. The topics are youth-focused and have changed over the years as youths’ interest change and the skills taught by volunteer leaders. While you attend fair this year, take a moment to read the posters, talk to a 4-H member about their project, walk through the livestock barns, attend a few shows, and enjoy the 4-H Indoor Exhibit Building. The entries equal hours and hours of investment from our local youth. They had a dream this last year, they set a few goals to

achieve and their projects are the outcomes of their creativity, knowledge and skills. Many fair exhibitors enter their hobby projects in the Open Class, carrying on a tradition they enjoyed as young 4-H member. It is such a fun way to display talents and share with the community. Whatever your reasons for exhibiting or attending the fair, take a moment to appreciate the uniqueness of this event. In our technology-based society, so many interactions and components have become virtual but the fair is one tangible example that technology cannot replace. This yearly tradition has strong roots in the belief of community, togetherness and comradery. Thank you for sharing the 2019 Ravalli County Fair with us. We look forward to sharing the fair with you! The Ninth Annual Ravalli County Fair Poetry Contest will feature eight finalists in three age categories. The poems will be read on the free stage at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, and the community is invited to enjoy the presentations and cheer on their favorite poets. “All of the poems are highly entertaining and worth your time if you want to come and listen to the poetry,” said Poet Dominic “Flominic” Farrenkopf, event organizer. Poets from kindergarten through sixth grade, seventh through twelfth grade and adults 18 years and older will receive prizes at the poetry reading and awards ceremony. The top three poets in elementary and high school will receive all day carnival ride passes. The top three adult poets will win Chapter One Book Store gift certificates. The poems and poets are not the only entertainment as Farrenkopf is also the emcee. “I think my favorite part about this contest is seeing poets share their work in public, followed by rounds of ovation and support from friends and family,” Farrenkopf said. “I love writing poetry and I love sharing it.
