Corvallis senior Madison Channer MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic

CORVALLIS – Madison Channer of Corvallis High School loves to learn, and has a heart to serve in medical missionary work. “I’ve very academically inclined – so I like to learn,” said Channer. “I’m going to Bozeman for nursing; my family background is that we have a big background in medical health care and missionary work. I’ve been to Haiti twice already, and I think that’s a motivation for me because I want to go back to Haiti and help with more than just sorting needles.” Channer’s trips to Haiti came in the summer of 2011 and March 2014. Her jobs on those trips included babysitting, teaching English and sorting needles. “I’m a Christian, so it helped my faith to see these people who had nothing and yet their faith was so strong and you realize how blessed you are here and how trivial your struggles are,” Channer said. “It was really helpful. “I go to Canyon View Church and my family are all Christians, so I’ve been raised with that background. My faith is a big part of who I am. The motivation of giving back to your community both physically and mentally is a big part of medical missionary work.” Channer said she is considering the options of nurse practitioner or physical therapist. She said the best part of attending Corvallis High School is “growing as a person and developing friendships. “I have very close friends. I like the small school setting because you get to know everyone in your grade.” She said she has enjoyed her involvement with the sports teams. Channer participated in soccer, track and field (hurdles) and was the wrestling manager for four years. “I’m not really good at sports,” she said. “Academics are more my thing, but it’s a lot of fun to get out there and keep in shape and it’s a good group of kids and good coaches.” Channer is National Honor Society president, treasurer in the Junior Soroptomist club. She is involved in InterAct, and has participated in Science Olympiad for the past four years. Channer is a CHS valedictorian and has received a tuition waiver from Montana State University in Bozeman. “I put a lot of hard work into my scholarships and [CHS school counselor] Mrs. Knapp really helped me,” she said. “My English teachers helped with correcting my essays and making sure they were good – my mom too. “I just really appreciate my parents and my teachers for giving me the knowledge and the motivation to do well in school.”

Darby senior Keely Ehmann MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic

DARBY – Senior Keely Ehmann has been in Darby Schools for 13 years - kindergarten through 12th grade. She enjoys sports and math and plans to study engineering at Carroll College. Based on her junior times in track, she has received scholarships to Carroll College and will run on their track team. “I like math so my favorite class was pre-calculus,” said Ehmann. “My favorite teacher was Mr. Fladstoll. He retired last year and was a really good teacher.” Ehmann’s list of activities is extensive: volleyball, basketball, track, Student Council President for two years, National Honor Society, Model United Nations, Youth Legislature (like youth government at the capitol in Helena), Band (flute) – superior rating at District, RSVP a student service program, “BE an 11” – for captains of sports teams (volleyball, basketball and track), Academic World Quest, Aim Higher, Bullying Hurts mentoring program and class president for three years. This past weekend, she took first at divisional competition in the 100, 200, and 400. In the 400, she set a new Divisional Record. Her 4X100 relay team took 4th and her 4X400 relay team took 5th. So, she qualified for state in five events. Keely has been All-Sport in every sport she played – and was voted Female Athlete of the year by the Kiwanis. This summer Keely Ehmann went to Australia this summer to run track and field. She has received several student service awards and her favorite community service project this year was the Darby Giving tree. “My other favorite community service was a blood drive we ran last summer,” she said. “We

called, made appointments and helped run it – we got 22 units of blood.” Ehmann said she values the school size and experiences. “I love Darby because it is like close-knit family,” said Ehmann. “You become really close with your teachers and classmates. I know everyone in the school. It is really cool because I see the younger kids look up to us and I want our senior class to leave our mark on the school and keep this positive energy going. “My favorite moment of this year was when our volleyball team won the district tournament and it was here in Darby – it was awesome – the first time since 1993, so it was quite a celebration 22 years! “My mom is a basketball coach so I’ve been playing basketball for a long time and I tried VB and Track in Junior high and I just loved them both. I’ll miss volleyball and basketball so much, but I’m glad I get to continue with track at the next level.” “She’s a member of one of the most outgoing classes we’ve had in a number of years –an excellent role model in the class room and on the athletic field and in the communities and Keely exemplifies that,” said Darby School counselor Kohn. Ehmann has a Bitterroot Valley ranching background - in the Sula Basin. “Being from a small school is nice because we are presented by more opportunities for scholarships, more help from the counselor and we’ll have a more personal graduation ceremony because everyone knows everyone,” she said.

Hamilton High School seniorTess Gallagher Clancy Amy Conkel for the

Ravalli Republic

Hamilton High School has many outstanding students that put their whole heart into the learning environment to achieve their goals in education. Tess Gallagher Clancy is a senior this year at HHS, and is involved in her school and community in many ways. Gallagher Clancy is involved in many of the clubs and groups that HHS offers their students. She is the Vice President of the Key Club organization, involved in Envirothon, cross country, Science Olympiad, choir, American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls State and Girls Nation, and is a National Honor Society member and said she was enriched by everything she participated in. “Girls State and Nation opened my eyes to a world of possibility in government and politics that I had previously considered as beyond my capabilities,” said Gallagher Clancy. Gallagher Clancy is also a ballerina at Ballet Bitterroot Performing Arts and River Street Dance Theater, where she is actively involved. Gallagher Clancy has a passion for dancing. She loves to dance and has trained as a classical ballerina since she was in kindergarten. When asked what the best part of her high school career was, she said, “Finding out who you are, and becoming aware of the world around you and where you might belong in it.” Dan Kimzey is the principal at HHS. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Tess since she was a shy sixthgrader,” said Kimzey. “How nice it has been to see how much she has developed into a poised and confident young lady! Tess is involved in all aspects of the HHS student-leadership and for her, service to her community is secondnature. She enriches our student body with her intelligence and commitment to excellence.” Gallagher Clancy’s three favorite subjects in school are English, History and Government. “I love politics and government, and I hope that our generation is able to use both concepts as effectively as possible,” she said. Gallagher Clancy has a very positive outlook on life and has bright goals for her upcoming future in the world. “The perspectives that we have when we are young need to be expanded and widened, but I hope very much that I never lose the idealistic and hopeful view that I have of the world,” Clancy said. “It seems as though many of us lose the ability to love the world and to see its beauty, through all of its faults, as we are growing up. I haven’t lost that yet and with any luck I never will. If I can benefit the human race instead of burdening it, then I will see myself as successful, and that is my goal.” Next year, Gallagher Clancy will be attending the University of Montana to study sociology with an emphasis on inequality and social justice. There is a chance she may have a double major in history, political science or public administration. She also plans on having a minor in Spanish or non-profit administration. “A lot can change once one gets to school, but right now I hope to pursue work in the non-profit field, especially in non-profit coalitions,” Gallagher Clancy said.

She reflected on the education that she received from her teachers at HHS. “Hamilton High School has some truly outstanding teachers,” said Gallagher Clancy. “Graduation is always about seniors, but our teachers have played a large part in our successes. I have spent seven hours a day with my teachers for most of my life, and they have shaped me enormously. A few who especially impacted me were Mrs. Jen Carmody, who taught me the power of thought and word, and how they change the world; Mr. Don Faris, who embraced my enthusiasm for his subject and never failed to push me to delve deeper; Mrs. Holly Faris, who provided intellectual stimulation in a safe environment, and who understood what I needed as a frightened freshman; Ms. Arielle Rhodz, who has helped me grow since middle school, enriching her students and providing understanding in a confused world; Mr. Neil Massey, with his idealistic (even if he doesn’t know it) willingness to modify and become the best teacher he can be for the benefit of his students; and Mr. Mark Albert, who cares about us, not just because we are his students, but because it’s the right thing to do.”

Hamilton Top Students Brianna Huggans is the

She has participated in Soccer, Basketball, Key Club, National Honor Society, H-Club, Yearbook Wall of Fame (All-State Soccer) and Academic all state. She received an award from the Greater Ravalli Foundation. Her goals are to play soccer at Bellevue College and transfer to Eastern Washington University to study Dental Hygiene.

Kali Hayes Parents: Mike and Holli Hayes; GPA: 4.0 Activities: National Honor Society, four years; varsity basketball, four years; varsity cross country; yearbook editor; choir, two years. Scholarships, awards: Brigham Young University/Idaho Academic Scholarship; Academic All-State, basketball and cross country, AllConference Basketball, second team; 2015 State Class A All-Tournament Basketball team. STEVENSVILLE – Jennifer Harthan has a flair for art and interior design. She has been a Stevensville student since her first-grade year and plans to study at Montana State University in Bozeman. “Jennifer is an exceptional student who has participated in everything from sports to student council, to cheerleading and community service,” said SHS Principal Brian Gum. “She is someone who always has a positive outlook and a smile on her face. I know she will go far in this world, and am looking forward to seeing where she goes after this.” Harthan said that she has enjoyed her education at Stevensville. “Stevensville schools provide a lot of opportunities for kids to get involved in everything,” said Harthan. “I’ve been involved in Student Council and TIP [Teens in Partnership] since sixth grade and service club, so I learned to be excited about serving the community through that.” She said she enjoyed going to the Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital in Helena to hand out cards to the veterans for Valentine’s Day and Christmas.

She participated in Key Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, Tennis and Cheerleading which she called a step out of her comfort zone. “I’m not the best at sports but I do it for fun,” she said. Harthan said she especially enjoyed participating in the Stevensville Community Foundation. “They have kids on the board – we are not allowed to vote but we sit on the board,” she said. “We get to help out with ‘Fund For All’ – it provides kids who need money for extracurricular activities to buy shoes or something. They fill out an anonymous application so we fundraise for that.” Harthan said her favorite class is Art and art and advisory teacher Mike Mikelson is her favorite. “I’ve been in his advisory class since freshmen year and have gotten to know him well,” she said. “I’m in AP Art this year and we just sent all our stuff in to get judged and if I pass I get AP credit. I just started doing art my freshman year. I’ve always had an interest in design – like interior design and architecture but I didn’t take art classes until high school and then I found out I really liked it. “I’m going to Montana State University – undeclared, but might possibly study architecture – it’s got a good architecture program.” Harthan said she enjoys the Griz/Bobcat rivalry – and has cheered for the Griz teams while growing up and will miss Stevensville. “Being a Yellow Jacket will stay with me my whole life,” she said. “I count this as my home town and I will miss the Bitterroot Valley - it’s so pretty here.”

Victor senior Carlyjean Conley MICHELLE McCONNAHA Ravalli Republic

VICTOR – Carlyjean Conley is a standout at Victor High School. She is an artist, photographer and natural leader planning to study marine biology. “I like to be involved and I like to overwhelm myself,” said Conley. “I’ve been super involved in school since I was little. I’ve just always loved school and am a natural leader and have gone to leadership NYLC [National Youth Leadership Council] in D.C. my sixth-grade year, and I’ve traveled to Australia with the student ambassador program [People to People].” Conley is president of both the Victor student body and Business Professionals of America. She is in National Honor Society and Student Council. “I’ve done reACT! since my sophomore year. I’m really involved in that,” said Conley. “Carlyjean is a leader, an advocate and an agent for change,” said Lindsay Stover of Tobacco Free Ravalli. “Her participation in the ‘reACT! Against Corporate Tobacco youth coalition’ has helped educate youth and community members about the dangers of tobacco use. Carlyjean has undoubtedly prevented many youth from falling prey to tobacco industry tactics with her creative and innovative ideas to reach out to young people. Carly is truly an inspiration to others and we will miss her next year.” This year, Conley was a unified partner for Special Olympics and helped with the winter games on the snowshoe relay team. She had plans to help with the summer games, but the date conflicts with the state high school track competition in Laurel. Conley will compete in discus and shot put. At divisional competition, her distances were: discus (105’) and shot (33’.3”). She has participated in volleyball, girls basketball, boxing, soccer, baseball and even football in junior high. “I’ve done pretty much every sport you can think of,” she said. “I broke my collarbone snowboarding in eighth grade, so no more baseball. Conley has been enrolled in Victor Schools since first grade and calls it home.

Good luck to all the graduates 1111 South First, Hamilton • 363-3526

“We’re a small town - like a family – we’re really close knit,” she said. “It’s nice – you know everyone and everyone knows you. It’s fun to go to a basketball game and know everyone.” Since her travels to Australia between her sophomore and junior years, Conley said she realizes there is a bigger world out there. “I love exploring and seeing the world,” she said. “I plan to do traveling and sky diving. I rappelled off a 200’ cliff off the Blue Mountains in Australia and that was super fun.” Her favorite classes are science and art. “I’m into photography and the ATR My Beautiful Montana art contest had over 80 submissions and I’m in the top 10,” said Conley. “I’ve also had a few of my projects published in the Big Sky Art Magazine and my photo was used in Matt Kittle’s poetry book that he published. “I want to become a marine biologist, and I have to go out of state to study that, so I’ll be moving to California and living with my dad – he’s in the military and stationed in San Jose. I’ll live on base and go to college – I’m also thinking of joining the Navy – Dad’s in the Army so that’s a little give and take there.” Conley said she is looking forward to the VHS commencement and guest speaker Kimberly King [currently teaching in Bozeman], who was her third- and sixth-grade teacher. “She’s like a best friend and is really near and dear to our class because we were her first class to teach,” said Conley.
