Senior Jessi Boaz helped lead student council MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Corvallis Senior Jessi Boaz has been attending school at Corvallis since 7th grade. “I love how welcoming and accepted I feel in everything at Corvallis,” she said. “I love how all the teachers are more than willing to help students out no matter what. If I’m struggling teachers will notice and walk me though it so I know the material. I love that.” She has enjoyed all her classes and has been in varsity track two years, girls soccer three years, and four years in Interact, speech and debate, student council, Journalism, ban, yearbook and as the editor for three of those years. She was almost in a musical but Covid shut the school last fall a few days before the production. In journalism, she was the director for the live news broadcast every morning. “Morning announcements and I have a love/hate relationship but we always work it out,” Boaz said. After graduation she plans to attend the private college Abilene Christian University in Texas and will work for a minor in Spanish and a major in Communications. Carla Soto-Guerra
Pacific University Oregon Presidential Scholarship University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship Mitchell Spinetta University of Southern California Grant University of Southern California Scholarship
In her freshman year she was told to get involved in everything. “I took that a little too seriously and I highly recommend other kids do it too,” Boaz said. “Take on as much as you can but don’t take on more than you can handle. Take stuff on, try it out and don’t be afraid to fail a couple of times. It’s worth it. I would rather fail at what I try than get it right the first time and never remember what I did again.” Principal Cammie Knapp said Boaz has many positive attributes that helped in a year that has been ever-changing and challenging. “Jessi helped lead the Corvallis Student Council and student body through doing things a little bit differently,” Knapp said. “She maintained a positive attitude and willingness to help as needed and took photos at many school sponsored events. This school year she assisted with the transition to video news, organizing and taking the younger classmen under her wing. Jessi always readily volunteers to help as needed around our district to help the operations of many events run smoothly.”

“That was really powerful,” Conner said. “Our community is there to help each other and I’m really thankful to be part of a community like that.” Counselor Kurt Kohn said Conner represents the highest standards of a Darby Tiger and has excelled in her studies, despite the pandemic. “That goes against the norm because most distance-learners across the nation are struggling,” Kohn said. “Maddison was able to rock it and earn straight A’s as a distance learner. She’s the valedictorian, overcoming a unique
challenge. She is an example for others in the areas of effort, leadership, academics, behavior, responsibility, and initiative.” Conner said distance learning has helped prepare her for college although she does miss her friends. “It’s been hard being a senior and missing out on making the memories you make your senior year,” Conner said. “Otherwise, I don’t regret my decisions at all. I like it and it worked well for me.” She did get to help paint the “D” and go on the DHS senior trip.
Darby senior Madison Conner thankful for community MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Darby High School Senior Madison Conner is the valedictorian with a perfect grade point average even after being a distance learner this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. She attended Darby School for all 13 years of her education. This year, with a pandemic underway she chose remote learning and kept her straight A grades with self-discipline and daily zoom meetings with her Darby teachers. “Darby school has always been really great for me,” Conner said. “The teachers always want you to do your best. I would not be in the position that I am without them. I’m super-thankful. They have given me so many opportunities to succeed.” A self-described “math geek,” she said she loves math and is also “into art.” Her plans are to study Business Finance and Accounting starting this fall at Arizona State University. She was able to use a month of her remote learning time to visit Arizona to meet ASU faculty and get her fall programming in place.
She is excited to be studying in a warmer climate. Conner has participated in many extracurricular activities including basketball and volleyball. A highlight of her high school career was traveling with the Darby Travel Club to Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain. “That was life-changing for me,” she said. “We traveled as a group of kids, advisors and chaperones then connected with groups from Oregon and Texas and made friends with those kids. It was a great experience and I would like to study abroad in college.” Conner said that the small size of the town of Darby was a perfect fit for her. “I think that we do a lot to help out our community,” she said. “My favorite thing about Darby is that we are like one big family. We are there to help each other out.” She tearfully referenced Darby High School graduate Jake “Sunshine” Sanders who died in the fall of 2018 following a battle with Stage 3 non-Hodgkins T-cell lymphoma and the many supporting community rallies.

Megan Yockey pursues career in medicine MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
HHS Senior Megan Yockey has attended Hamilton schools since Kindergarten and likes that her school is “the perfect size.” Her secret to being a valedictorian is that she worked and studied hard. “I have a friend who says if you can get all A’s get all A’s,” Yockey said. “If you can do it, you should do it. If you’re capable, you should make it happen.” In high school, she has participated in choir, Guys and Dolls, cross country, Unified Track and the SPURS club. She put extra thought into her club choices and schedule. “I am too busy and didn’t want to do something I’m not fully invested in just to have it on my resume for scholarships,” Yockey said. After HHS graduation on June 6 she is going to the University of Hawaii for a career in medicine. “I’m not sure what job specifically,” Yockey said. “I want to see what different jobs are like and
what I’m most interested in. I like that medical jobs have two sides. My analytical, sciencey side is excited to try to find the problem and fix it and then there is the side where you have a deeper connection oneon-one with your patients.” Currently, she is employed at Catalyst Physical Therapy. “I don’t have the science part and don’t have the training but connecting with the patients and getting to know them is really special and fun,” Yockey said. “I enjoy that environment. My mom is a speech therapist and I know she really cares about her patients and I always found that interesting.” She said the pandemic has had a big impact on students. “I think we’re very lucky to be seniors this year,” she said. “We have the opportunity to go to school together until we graduate, I’m really grateful for that. Going off to what’s next for each of us is an unknown. We’re adapting and I think it has made us all more flexible.” Principal Ryan Wells said
DARBY, MONTANA • 406-821-3405
Yockey makes HHS a more welcoming and inviting place. “She is an integral part of our SPURS club, which promotes school wide inclusion, and she is a member of our unified track team that pairs special education students with general edu-
cation students in regular season competitions,” Wells said. “Megan values opportunities to promote the self-worth of others and she is truly a kind person. HHS is incredibly proud to have such a talented and caring student in our building every day.”

Seth Petz was homeschooled before coming to Hamilton Christian Academy in sixth grade. “My favorite thing [about HCA] is the relationship we have with the teachers,” Petz said. “It’s more on a personal level rather than a ‘you have to get through the year’ relationship.” His favorite subject is also history. “I love WWI, WWII, inventions and how civilizations worked and how we all failed and functioned

Stevi senior Kellen Bradt MICHELLE MCCONNAHA Ravalli Republic
Stevensville High School Senior Kellen Bradt was chosen to be the spotlighted senior due to his positive attitude and hard work. He has competed in football, the ski club (there was no ski club this year due to Covid), plays American Legion baseball for the Bitterroot Bucs and kept an honor roll level GPA. In football, Bradt was a wide receiver / defensive back and said playing football for the Yellow Jackets was inspiring. “It is fun to just be out there with the guys,” he said. “It’s just a fun experience all around.” In baseball he plays centerfield and said he loves the sport and enjoys his team members. Bradt attended Florence-Carlton School, kindergarten through eighth grade, then changed to SHS for four years of high school as he was looking to attend a bigger school. “I transferred to SHS for more opportunities and more challenging academics,” Bradt said. “It is fun, I really just love the people here and the things you get to do. SHS is a great place to be.”
His favorite classes are math and English. “I’m really enjoying a physics class right now and English with Ms. [Stacey] Sager,” he said. Bradt’s goal is to go into Aviation becoming a pilot for a national airline. He plans to study flying in the Aviation Program at Montana State University in Bozeman. He’s not a pilot yet but has taken lessons at the Hamilton airport and plans to continue. He said he was inspired to fly because of family travels. “We used to go on vacations a lot and one of the best parts was the plane ride there,” Brandt said. Principal Brian Gum said Bradt is the type of student that always has a smile on his face and a positive attitude. “The fact that Kellen always helps out and encourages other around him says a lot about his character,” Gum said. “I know this young man will do well in life because of his attitude and work ethic.” Vice Principal Eric Larson said Bradt is the perfect selection for a spotlight. “In my short time knowing Kellen I’ve found
that he is the type of student you want a whole bunch of,” Larson said. “He works hard and is involved in activities. You know he is always going to be positive, have a smile and be engaging. He is a great representative of Jacket Nation. He’ll do great in the next chapter of his life.”
