Downtown Hamilton has a great celebration for Daly Days, July 30 and 31. Excitement includes sales by businesses; craft vendors; demonstrations of cars, Jiu-Jitsu and Zumba; Weiner Dog Races; a mini triathlon; a beer garden and a street dance.

Hamilton Downtown Association President Andrew Kilian said HDA members are incredibly excited about bringing back Daly Days, July 30 and 31. “Taking a year off and starting late this year was challenging, but everyone, from the City, the Main Street businesses, to the people themselves, has been incredibly supportive in helping us get the event going again,” Kilian said. “We're excited to have the Bitterroot Bouncers bring back their rock-climbing wall and Zorb Balls (giant human hamster balls).” On Friday, a myriad of vendors will

fill the second block of Main beginning at 9 a.m., and Bitterroot Warrior Arts will give a Jiu-Jitsu demonstration in the center of it all at 10 a.m. This year a beer garden will start earlier in the day, around 2 p.m., to help people more easily transition into the weekend's festivities. Hamilton Mayor Dominic Farrenkopf will bring out his dunk tank with proceeds going to a new Fire Hall. “This may be your only and best chance to address a municipal official in a manner that is appropriate and deserving,” Kilian said. The Friday night Street Dance will

feature the New Orleans style of the Who Dat band until 11 p.m. Saturday morning begins with the Kiwanis’ traditional pancake breakfast under Bell McCall's Main Street storefront. On the first block of Main Street, The Bitterrodders will put on their Car Show for everyone to check out vintage and classic American muscle at its finest. At 9 a.m., on a stage provided by Lakeland Feed and located by River Rising near Fourth and Main Streets, the National Guard will present the colors for the National Anthem. Everyone is invited to join a session of Zumba by Groovz led by Claire Kemp.

“If you want to join in on the fun, that's a good place to do it,” Kilian said. Bitterroot Warrior Arts will reprise their Jiu-Jitsu demonstration at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m. is the Musical Chairs challenge where contestants can win a recliner from Bitterroot Furniture. At noon is the valley-wide famous Weiner Dog Race with a rousing chorus of the Oscar Mayer Weiner song. Kilian said the song is sung for two reasons. “One, it is the unofficial anthem of Weiner Dog races everywhere and

two, is hilarious to get about 200 plus people to sing how they ‘wish they were an Oscar Mayer Weiner’ in broad daylight,” he said. “If you don't know the words you can just hum along.” Then the races will commence, with stadium seating provided by the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. “If you've never seen it before you gotta check it out,” Kilian said. “It's a bucket list item for sure. Some dogs come down to the track in full regalia like professional wrestlers.” Contestants can download a form from the Hamilton Downtown Association Facebook page and submit it in advance at the HDA office, 217 Main St. Right after Weiner Dog races is the newest event, the Main Street "Bike, Bat, Board" Mini Triathlon. Kilian described the event as “hilarious.” The competition happens in “heats” or several rounds to determine finalists. Contestants compete against each other by racing up the Weiner dog track atop a tiny child-

Sign up for the few remaining vendor slots, the “Weiner Dog Races” and the “Bike, Bat, Board" Mini Triathlon through the HDA website on the Event section where it says “Daly Days” at www.hamiltondowntownassociation.org. “There's sure to be fun for the whole family so don't miss out,” Kilian said. “Everything downtown wraps up then we all will head to the Daly Mansion for the Brewfest.” Also, Saturday is the Hamilton Farmers Market with fresh locally grown produce and products from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. by the Ravalli County Museum. “Each year, we are thrilled to showcase the many tremendous artisans, food vendors and community businesses that make Daly Days one of Hamilton's treasured traditions,” said Erin Steuer, Executive Director of Hamilton Downtown Association. “It's great to be back after a hiatus last year and we are thrilled to bring everyone back downtown to celebrate our vibrant community." b

sized bike, then spinning around many times with their forehead touching a baseball bat and running back to the start. Then with their belly on a skateboard, the contestants "swim" to the finish line. “This is first this year, but we did some dry runs at the Grizzly

Broadband Customer Appreciation Day and the results were hilarious,” Kilian said. “This year's Daly Days is sure to be the crown jewel of the big weekend's events. I’ll post a video showing the contest on the Facebook page.”

The Daly Mansion is celebrating “Daly Days: Back to Our Roots” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 31.

Daly Days at the Mansion celebrating Hamilton’s Grand Manor michelle mcconnaha | michelle.mcconnaha@ravallirepublic.com

Daly Mansion Events Coordinator Courtney Hartelius said the Daly Days event this year shares the history of Hamilton and the Bitterroot Valley in a fun way. “We just wanted to provide the guests that come with a nice, fun and historical experience,” Hartellius said. “We wanted to highlight not only the

Daly family but also the rich history of the Bitterroot Valley. That’s why we’re really excited about the living history presenters like Victor FFA Chapter with raising sheep and the Bitter Root Water Forum will talk about the history of the water.” Community members attending “Daly Days: Back to Our Roots” will

enjoy live music by the Bitterroot Ragtime Society. For the reenactor vignettes, Daly Mansion volunteers will dress as their favorite Daly family members. Guests will participate in a type of scavenger hunt visiting historic buildings, asking questions and interacting with the characters. The children's playhouse

will be open for visitors. For the living history presentations, local community members will talk about how their crafts and businesses are related to and rooted in the history of the Bitterroot Valley. Presentations and booths include Becky Lovejoy’s presentation at 12:30 p.m. at Margaret's Garden: History

Ravalli Republic July 2021 - 7

of Gardening in the Bitterroot Valley; the Bitterroot Water Forum’s presentation from 1 to 2 p.m. at the gazebo about the History of Water in the Bitterroot Valley; and a presentation by Laura Garber, director of Cultivating Connections and Homestead Organics, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Growing Food, Saving Seeds and Local Ingredients. All day presenters include Number One Draft Horse Rescue; Side Saddle Demonstrations by Russ Koppes; Raising Sheep in the Valley by Nora Goodwin from the Victor FFA Chapter; Blacksmithing Demonstration by Chris Lucki and the history of the Apple Boom by The Ravalli County Museum. An old-fashioned "market" area by the North porch will feature a Daly Mansion volunteer bake sale, including some treats made from recipes dating back to the late 1800s, fresh popcorn, Big Sky Squeezes will be there with their hand-squeezed lemonade, as well as sno cones from Sno-to-Go. The Daly Mansion will offer horsedrawn carriage rides on either an

original Daly Family carriage (seats two) or a historical style Vis-a-Vis carriage (seats four) provided by Live Oak Belgians. Carriage rides are on the halfhour starting at 12, with the last ride at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 for two riders. Reservations are highly encouraged to save a seat, call 406-363-6004 to get on the list.

The Daly Mansion family home will be open for self-guided tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and at noon and 2 p.m. for guided tours at the regular tour prices of $15 for adults, $14 for seniors (60+) and military, $8 for youth 6-17 years, and free for children age 5 and under.

The Daly Mansion is collaborating with the Bitterroot Chamber of Commerce to host their annual Bitterroot Brewfest on the beautiful grounds from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The food trucks for the Brewfest will be on the Daly Mansion grounds from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. near the Daly Mansion’s event tent. Tables will be set up inside for enjoying local food truck cuisine. “The Brewfest tents and sign up, will be on the north lawn but guests are welcome to wander and enjoy the expansion of the grounds once they get their beer,” Hartelius said. Guests to Daly Days can enjoy the grounds, have a picnic on the lawn, go see the reenactments and the living history presentations until 3 p.m. The last carriage ride will be at 5:30 so there will be carriage rides after the mansion activities are done. “We hope that our historicallythemed activities will provide all guests with a fun, educational and interactive experience to hopefully inspire them to visit the Mansion again, even when the beer isn’t flowing!” b

Bitterroot Brew Fest New location for valley's premier summer event michelle mcconnaha | michelle.mcconnaha@ravallirepublic.com

The Bitterroot Brewfest by the Bitterroot Chamber of Commerce has new hours, a different location, free shuttle rides and one payment for the entire evening. This year the Bitterroot Brewfest will be held on the grounds of the Daly Mansion from 1 – 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 31.

Chamber Director Al Mitchell said the changes benefit both nonprofits for a memorable event. “Everybody should come, we’re going to have fun,” he said. “We’re going to have 26-acres to spread out on. We’ve had our year of Covid and now it is time to celebrate and have a party at ‘Bitterroot’s Best Outdoor Party.’”

The Bitterroot Brewfest will cost the all-inclusive price of $35 paid only at the registration tent on the day of the event. Bring your identification. “You buy your mug at the event, and you don’t have to buy extra tickets after that,” Mitchell said. “It’s just a onecost, all-day pass with unlimited tastes.

It is going to be easier, and we won’t have to pick up tickets off the ground. Once you have your glass and your wrist band, you’re good to go.” Six local brewers will have their own tents, and two distributors, Summit and Zips, will be pouring out of their refrigerated trucks. There will be over 40 flavors of beer.

Ravalli Republic July 2021 - 9

Live bands fill the evening with music for dancing and enjoying during the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual Microbrew Festival at the Daly Mansion in Hamilton.

The chamber is offering free shuttle rides from 4-9 p.m. every half hour from the city parking lot by the post office and Hamilton High School and back to the Daly Mansion, as close to

the half-hour as possible. Mitchell recalled the history of the Brewfest. “It was started in 1995 by Dale Barry, then president of the BVCC,”

Mitchell said. “He heard about a Brewfest in Portland and thought it sounded like a good time to open a few kegs of beer and make a little money for the chamber.” b

“Instead of all being under one tent it will be spread out on the grounds a little bit,” Mitchell said. “It will all be close to the music.” The opening act will be the Andrea Harsell Duo. Then is “The Quick & Easy Boys,” a power trio out of Portland, Ore., who create their own blend of rock and roll. There will be seven to ten food booths offering a variety of foods from Mexican, Vikings, wood-fired pizza, classic burgers and fries to vegetarian options and possibly Cajun. The food trucks will serve from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hamilton Mayor Dominic Farrenkopf will have his dunk tank at the Brewfest, raising money for a new fire hall, the chamber and the Daly Mansion. The Bitterroot Brewfest will overlap the Daly Days celebration at the Daly Mansion by a couple of hours. “Their event goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and ours is 1 to 8 p.m.,” Mitchell said. “We usually serve 2,300 people but have 3,000 people in attendance. You can get on the grounds and just listen to music without having to purchase a beer. It doesn’t cost to do that.”

Bulls Broncs & Honkytonks New Rodeo, concert at fairgrounds offers family fun michelle mcconnaha | michelle.mcconnaha@ravallirepublic.com

“Bulls, Broncs and Honkytonks” is a full day of exciting rodeo entertainment at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 31. Fairgrounds Manager Melissa Seville said it is an all-day, all ages, family-friendly event. On Saturday, the action begins at 9 a.m. with Barrel Racing, followed by an Iron Cowgirl competition at 2 p.m., the Bulls N Broncs rodeo begins at 6 p.m. and the evening ends with dancing with ShoDown at 8:30 p.m. – midnight. The Barrel Racing is part of the Rockin' RC Rodeo Barrel Race Summer Series where the top 10 gals will race for a trophy saddle at the Ravalli County Fair on Saturday, Sept. 4. All the Barrel Races are

Montana Barrel Horse Association (MBH) sanctioned races with money added. “Barrel Racing is very serious in this valley,” Seville said. “There is good prize money up for grabs. The top 10 gals vie for a saddle.” The gates open at 12:30 p.m. for the Iron Cowgirl competition which includes race barrels, roping a calf and then tying a goat. “It is a tough competition,” Seville said. “We have to limit it to 50 girls this year so if anyone wants to enter they need to be quick to get in.” Rodeo gate fees are $20 each or $15 for first responders/military/veterans active or retired with ID. The Bulls N Broncs rodeo with Red Eye Rodeo will be from 6-8 p.m.

with $5,000 of added prize money. “This weekend there isn’t another NRA rodeo booked and we didn’t want to compete with another rodeo,” Seville said. The fairgrounds will have food trucks to give consumers a sneak-peak of Fair food. Ten food trucks will be onsite at the fairgrounds Big Sky Squeeze (artisan lemonade), Big Sky Grub truck (deepfried cheesecake and more), Moose Creek BBQ, UpNSmokin BBQ, Little Bear Espresso (the new coffee vendor at the Ravalli County Fair), Country Kitchen, Bitterroot Snowballs (shaved ice), Meandering Moose (homemade carrot cake and tasty sandwiches), Cherry Bean Coffee and Montana Kick Ass BBQ. “Some of these are on the waiting list for Fair,” Seville said. “When we have events we give first dibs to our fair food vendors to keep them as busy as we can. If they can’t come we go to our waiting list because we get to taste their food first hand and see how they do in a crowd situation. It’s a good way to get their foot in the door.”

The doors open at 7 p.m. for the dance in the Event Center with ShoDown that is from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. “That costs $15,” Seville said. “It costs $10 if you show the bracelet from going to the rodeo. We are giving people a discount to stay longer. Larry’s Tractors is our presenting sponsor and The Ranch, Montana Country 107.1, 97.9 is our radio sponsor.” There will be an open bar by 406 Saloon and distillery samples by Willie's Distillery in Ennis MT. Seville said hosting this event 30 days before the Ravalli County Fair is good practice. “In reality, it is getting us back into the groove of things,” Seville said. “Last year we didn’t have anything and this will help us. With Brewfest ending at eight o’clock, we’re hoping that people who want to take advantage of a nice summer evening will come on down and jump into ShoDown. We know people are wanting to get out and do stuff and we want to provide stuff for them.” b

Lake Como Triathlon Challenging course in a beautiful setting michelle mcconnaha | michelle.mcconnaha@ravallirepublic.com

The Lake Como Triathlon is a beautiful but challenging XTerra-style race with an open water swim, a mountain bike ride and a trail run on Saturday, July 24. In 2020, the Lake Como Triathlon was canceled due to Covid. Mark Butler, a member of the Ravalli County Search and Rescue, said as of July 9 there were only 60 athletes registered and that the low number of competitors reflect the trend in athletic competitions. “It is slowly tapering off over the years as a lot of triathlons have,” Butler said. “I think they were really popular about 10 years ago. Everybody was excited to try them and people have slowly lost interest. We used to do the Bitterroot Classic in Hamilton too. For a while that one sold out then tapered

off from 400 to about 60 as well.” Butler said that with the fading fad only athletes who really enjoy a triathlon challenge are competing. The Lake Como race is organized by community-minded volunteers as a fundraiser for Ravalli County Search and Rescue, Lost Trail Ski Patrol and some years it includes the leadership team of the Trapper Creek Job Corps. Butler encourages fans to come watch the timed event that is free for the audience but has a fee for competitors. “A lot of family and friends of the participants come watch,” he said. The race take place in the cooler hours of the day. On race day, competitors start by attending a mandatory meeting at 7:45 a.m.

At 8 a.m. the challenging race begins with an open water swim that starts and ends at the beach on the north side of the lake. Swimmers follow a triangle shaped swim course for about

1,500 yards. Wet suits are optional, the average July water temperature is 67 degrees, but they are rarely worn as changing out of the suits takes precious time.

At the beach, swimmers don flipflops for a 500-yard sprint to the transition area where they prepare for a 12.6 mile bike ride. The bike course is a combination of rutty and rocky Forest Service roads and bike trails. Riders must wear ANSI or SNELL approved helmets, headphones are not allowed and extreme caution is encouraged. The final leg of the triathlon is the 7.7 mile run that skirts the perimeter of Lake Como. The run begins on the north side for safety reasons and the least amount of hiker traffic earlier in the morning. Runners are encouraged to watch their footing, be prepared for a variety of surfaces and encouraged to pass with verbal notice. The route goes towards Rock Creek Falls around to the south side and runners finish heading north on the long stretch of the dam. Race numbers must be worn on the front of the runners garment and visible at the finish line. Butler said that this year due to lingering Covid concerns the Forest

Service and Ravalli County Public Health have discouraged food for the participants. “We have decided not to have any food,” Butler said. “Participants can bring their own food and we have to be cleaned up and gone by two o’clock. Usually that is when the participants are done.” Registration for the Lake Como Triathlon remains open until 11 p.m. on July 23 and costs individuals $85 and teams $175. Register online at www.lakecomotri.com. Butler said the draw to participate is the challenge and beauty. “It’s a really fun, exciting and challenging course,” he said. “It is in a beautiful setting, people come from all over the country because of the great setting and course. There aren’t very many open water triathlon is this region. Polson had a similar one in size about a month after ours, but it was for road bikes. Ours is an XTerra type race, a mountain bike race.” b

ShakespearE in the PArk Sapphire Lutheran Homes hosts two nights of theater al fresco

Sapphire Lutheran Homes will host Montana Shakespeare in the Parks this summer with a twist. Hamilton is a double feature city, meaning Hamilton will get to see both MSIP performances in a two-night event! MSIP will perform “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Cymbeline” this year. These performances are free and open to the public. On Tuesday, July 27, at 6 p.m., “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be performed. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595 or 1596. The play is set in Athens and features many subplots revolving around the marriage of Hippolyta and Theseus. One of the subplots explores a conflict between four

Athenian lovers. Another surrounds a group of six amateur actors rehearsing the play they are going to perform before the aforementioned wedding. Both groups of characters wind up in a forest inhabited by fairies who manipulate the humans and frolic in their own mischievous subplot. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is performed far and wide and is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and popular plays. Wednesday, July 28 at 6 p.m. will feature “Cymbeline.” Cymbeline, also known as The Tragedie of Cymbeline or Cymbeline, King of Britain, is a play set in Ancient Britain and written by William Shakespeare. The plot is based on legends that make up part of

the Matter of Britain that concerns the early Celtic British King Cunobeline. The play was written as early as 1611, even though the exact date is unknown. The play is declared a tragedy in the First Folio but some mod-

ern critics have declared Cymbeline as a comedy or even a romance. The play explores jealousy, innocence, romance and murder in a plot featuring the king, his children, their lovers, and enemies. b

The 12th Hardtimes Bluegrass Festival is in a new location, full of exciting performances and three days of toetappin’ energy, July 23-25. “We are excited, it is our 12th Hardtimes Bluegrass Festival,” said event organizer Mike Conroy. “We moved up about 500 yards for more shade and better parking. We even have a little old ditch that goes right through the festival so everyone can cool off their feet. Plus, there is a great view of Como Peak, it is gorgeous. ” Landowner Janice Heiland said her large, extended family of all ages looks forward to the festival every year. “The Heilands are very excited to be hosting this festival this year in our new spot,” she said. “It looks really nice and we are set to go. I attend all three days every year, our whole family does.”

She said the festival is full of wonderful people - audience, band and vendors. “You just don’t find people any nicer,” she said. “They are clean, they clean up after themselves. I really enjoy meeting all the people I don’t see any other time of the year and listening to all the great bands they have.” Co-organizer Tari Conroy said the Heiland family is appreciated. “This couldn’t happen without them,” she said. “Their property is such a special place in this valley. We get to sit in the middle of it and play music. We love this music and it has been a big part of our life. “People travel a long way to attend this, there’s a band coming from Oregon to play on this stage,” she said. “People who love this kind of music are willing to go to great lengths to be with other
