“Blue Jeans and Rodeo Scenes” will be what the Ravalli County Fair and Rodeo is all about this year after a year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic. An exciting country music concert by Ned LeDoux will jump-start the Ravalli County Fair this year on Tuesday, August 31, and the energy will continue through Saturday, Sept. 4. “We asked fairgoers what they wanted and music was the answer,” said Melissa Saville, fairgrounds manager. “We decided to dip our toe back in this year and see how it goes. We are going to go country this year, then we’ll decide for next year. It’s hard to find something to fit everyone but we all agree we want music.” Local musician Chance McKinney will be one of the opening acts and for $25 general seating or $30 reserved seating

audiences will be treated to three to four hours of live music, with an intermission. On Tuesday, the fairgrounds open at 2 p.m., gates open to the grandstands at 4 p.m. and the concert starts at 6 p.m. “We’ve invited our market and food vendors to be open at 2 p.m. so people coming to the concert can come early to get some food, maybe do some advance shopping and get a good seat,” Saville said. “The fairgrounds have free admission. It will make a nice afternoon and evening.” Get concert tickets at the fairgrounds office and do it early as Saville predicts the concert will sell out. New this year is a Bike Giveaway for kids under age 12 that will happen throughout the fair. Giveaway times are listed in the schedule of events and bike sponsors, Saville and youth will gather near the main office for drawings. “That business will be providing a bike, skateboard, scooter

or roller skates but most have donated bikes,” Saville said. “Right now we’re up to 14 bikes. Ravalli County Public Health office agreed to give us 20 bike helmets. The kids who win a bike will go to Public Health to make sure they have the right size. We want to give something back to the kids of the community.” This year the fairgrounds will have a new north gate with shade and seating, horse statues at the back arenas, handicapped seating for rodeo and concert, and kiosks at entrances listing all the activities with large, detailed, updated maps. Available this year is the “Lunch at Fair” promotion that was successful for 2019 with 1,300 participants. “We have a lot of city employees who want to come eat but don’t want to pay the gate fee as they have to get back to work,” Saville said. “They could enter the south gate, eat, check out the entertainment, run by the arena, pet some bunnies, watch the Ninjas, and as long as they return their admission ticket and leave by 2 p.m. they get their gate fee back.” To participate in Lunch at Fair enter the south gate, pay $9 cash at the special booth between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Moto Round Up events will be in the North Parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with no admission fee. Bring motorcycles, quads, side by sides, ATCs, mowers and outlaw karts to race and compete for prizes. The audience is welcome to cheer the motor riders on. Friday and Saturday morning will be qualifying events and Saturday has a wheelie contest, barrel racing and a trophy presentation. Food concessions and local manufacturer dealers will be onsite for this non-alcohol event. Parking will be at premium but it is free and managed by the Eagles Boxing Club at the ball field south of the fairgrounds. The north parking lot is also available with carriage rides to the gate by Kent and Marylou Conner. “Between the two lots we can probably hold about 700 cars,” Saville said. “We anticipate about 35,000 people coming for

four days of the fair and rodeo, so we’re asking people to plan ahead, car pool and park at community lots. Hamilton High School is only a hop, skip and jump away. Handicapped parking will be available at both locations, it just is limited.” Every year the fairgrounds improves some aspect of the facility and this year did $20,000 worth of electrical improvements and new lights, before that was paving food row road and providing drainage. They have installed special handicapped seating with a great view of the rodeo. Saville said the Ravalli County Fair and Rodeo is the best family-friendly country fair with new exhibits and displays.

“We’re really going out of our way this year to give ‘wow’ moments,” she said. “We don’t want people to say, ‘I don’t come because it’s always the same’ because it’s not going to be the same this year. We have lots to offer and for a low minimum gate fee you can walk the whole facility all day, every day – there’s a lot to do. Plus, you didn’t get to come last year.”

4-H Youth Exhibits- More than meets the eye ANNIE BAUER MSU Extension Ravalli County

Preparing for and exhibiting at the fair develops life skills in youth The Ravalli County Fair is a welcome event for 4-H members and their families that creates life-long memories. While

the experience of fair as a youth exhibitor provides a fun and memorable experience, participating in the county fair also creates the opportunity for valuable personal growth. One of the goals of 4-H is to empower youth with life skills that last throughout their lifetime. Preparing and entering an exhibit in the county fair accom-

plishes this goal by allowing youth to learn these skills with hands-on experiences. Spending time with their projects throughout the year develops responsibility. Presenting the project to judges in the show ring or during interview judging develops confidence and communication skills. Working alongside club members in the Corner Café booth develops teamwork. Waking up early to care for their animals by cleaning out pens and filling waters develops character. Helping a younger member accomplish similar tasks develops compassion and leadership. These are just a few examples of the life skills youth subconsciously learn while participating in the fair. Participating in the fair is something many 4-Hers look forward to and work towards all year long. It is the culmination of their 4-H year starting in October. Whether the 4-H project is an animal or a still exhibit, youth begin their 4-H year by establishing goals for their projects. Youth then attend monthly club meetings to work on their projects and accomplish their set goals with the help of adult volunteers. By fair time, the completed projects are ready to share with the public. The 4-H exhibits the public see at the fair are the result of months of hard work and dedication. As you walk through the fair this year, take an extra moment to appreciate the 4-H youth exhibits whether it be in the 4-H Indoor Exhibit building or animal barns. Not only are the 4-H exhibits impressive at first glance, but understanding how youth have grown while creating and raising their projects make the exhibits that much more remarkable. Ravalli County 4-H youth and volunteers are incredible examples of perseverance, optimism, and dedication. Their passion for 4-H shows in the quality of the projects and exuberance of being at fair! 4‐H is the youth education program of the Montana State University Extension, cooperating with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and local county governments. Ravalli County is one of the largest 4-H programs in the state with 350 youth members and 90 certified adult volunteers. Youth can participate in projects ranging from swine, beef, market or dairy goats, sheep, photography, cooking, cake decorating, sewing, wildlife, shooting sports, or leadership- just to name a few. 4-H offers over 200 project categories that are open to youth ages 8-18. The cloverbud project is for younger children, ages 5-7. If you would like more information about 4-H and how to get involved in the upcoming year, please call the Extension office 406-375-6611 We look forward to seeing you at the 2021 Fair!

Some of their efforts towards the fair include sponsoring Tim’s great-grandparents Alfred Spencer Smith and Inez Huls awards, purchasing animals at the fair, helping 4-H members came to the Bitterroot Valley around 1903 and moved to the east select a calf and instructing them on the process of raising a grand side of the valley in 1910. Their son Spencer and his wife Marie champion, touring youth of the valley through the dairy, covering purchased land and started farming, growing crops and dairying. dairy and farm chores so other family members could participate “They were milking cows and taking the milk to a creamery more heavily in the fair and being in parades. and taking the skim milk and slopping the hogs,” Tim said. The milking process moved into the big barn March 26, 2003 and the digester came a few years later. “It worked for a little over a year but the maintenance proved to be too much so we just separated the manure and made some of the valley’s favorite garden compost,” Trudy said. With the next generation having worked on the farm but choosing other professions, the Huls Dairy sold the 450 milking cows and 350 bred heifers during the Covid pandemic with the last load shipping out on Memorial Day, 2020. “We’re at 111 years, 1910 to 2021, we’re a century farm and there are not many of those,” Tim said. Currently, Tim and Trudy are doing projects they put off over the years, raising hay and 75 heifers. “The last calf from the cows that we sold is now in the breed pen,” Trudy said. “She’s 16-months old.” Tim Huls said he feels honored to be selected as the Ravalli County Fair Family. “When you consider others who have been honored for what they’ve meant to the community and fair it is truly humbling,” he said. His most memorable fair moments include grilling burgers for the Grange and trying to catch a pig that escaped the pen and squealed her way through the midway. “There’s a reality about agriculture that sometimes isn’t represented at the fair,” he said. “You’re seeing cattle at their best and kids at their best in their white shirts but the reality is that it is work.” Tim laughed as he recalled one ironic memory about the fair. He and his dad purchased the grand champion heifer in a Meadow Gold versus Dairygold bidding war that may have set a record price and it died soon after. “I really appreciate how kids are supported and rewarded for hard work,” he said. “We’ve seen good things happen in 4-H and FFA.” Trudy said another reality is that the kids raise the animals that don’t leave fair to be someone’s pet but rather to be food. “That’s a reality and people don’t know it anymore, people don’t know where their food comes from,” she said. “It’s a hard lesson but a good lesson.” “We really like going to see all the exhibits,” he said. “This valley has so many talented people, it is just unbelievable. We have so many talented people in so many different areas. Their efforts go on display at the fair.” Tim recalled when he was in third grade his teacher entered a class project and he was surprised to see it and proud to have his work displayed. He said that now he loves to check out the Tired Iron farm equipment and watch them thresh. “There are a lot of things I enjoy about the fair,” he said. “When we go to the rodeo we go early or we may not get a seat because we see someone we want to talk to and solve the problems of the valley and the world. The fair gives us a reason to come together as a community, it is really important and the fabric of our community on display.” Watch for the Huls family in the Ravalli County Fair Parade on Wednesday, Sept. 1, and at the rodeo on Friday, Sept. 3.

North entrance gets much needed attention PERRY BACKUS Ravalli Republic

Travis Saville and J. Lemus work to set Rocky into place at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. The pair of horses that adorn a new gate leading the small arenas.

It was Rocky’s turn. Bullwinkle had already found his new home on the opposite side of the new log gate marking the entrance into the area of the Ravalli County Fairgrounds where a couple of small arenas are located. The project was part of a larger effort to spruce the north entrance into the Ravalli County Fairgrounds that included a new shade shelter and a larger multi-window ticket booth. “We wanted to make the entrance more inviting,” said Ravalli County Fairgrounds manager Melissa Saville. Over the last few years, the fairgrounds board has put a lot of effort into enhancing the more visible entrance on the south end along Fairgrounds Road, but Saville said there’s a lot of folks who never come into the facility through that entryway.

If people have animals or come to watch kids parade their critters through the show ring, they most often park in the north lot and enter the fairgrounds that way. About 75% of the foot traffic comes through the north gate. “Frankly, the north entrance is a little plain and boring,” Saville said. “We wanted to pretty it up a little.” And so on this hot afternoon, Saville’s husband Travis was busy installing the second rearing horse near the top of the large log entryway under the watchful eye of the couple’s daughter, Trinity. “I always get volunteered for all this stuff,” Travis said, with a smile. “But that’s alright. I like doing it.” Earlier this summer, Travis helped install the log gate and poured the concrete pad in the new shade shelter that’s right inside the north entrance. His volunteer efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The fair board voted him volunteer of the year a couple of years back. “This is kind of a family affair around here,” Melissa Saville said. “When mom needs help, it’s all hands on deck.” The couple’s other daughter, Alyssa, is helping out the fair office this summer. Saville said her daughters earn their fair passes by putting in some pretty long hours volunteering for the annual event. They’re not alone. The annual fair that draws thousands to Hamilton every year depends on volunteers and support from local businesses to make it all work. “We get all of our supplies locally,” Melissa Saville said. “Local businesses are always ready to help us out. I think this year people are especially excited to see the fair coming back.”

When someone comes up with an idea to make improvements at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds, its manager often turns to a core group of folks ready to search high and low for ways to fund it. “I don’t think that a lot of people in the community realize that this community asset doesn’t get gobs of government money,” said Ravalli County Fairgrounds Manager Melissa Saville. “It does take a lot of money to run this facility yearround.” While county funding and funds generated by special events help pay the lion’s share of the bills, Saville said the Ravalli County Fairgrounds Foundation is often the group that finds that extra pot of cash needed to complete projects that add to the character and function of the facility located in the center of Hamilton. This year and last, the foundation helped find the funding for some of the improvements people will notice before, during and after this year’s fair, including a handicap platform in front of the grandstands large enough to seat up to 70 people, a new shade shelter at the north gate and a log entrance topped with twin horses to draw people into the fairground’s smaller arenas. The foundation’s president, Joy McClure, said the five-person board looks for projects that will improve the fairgrounds for events held throughout the year. “We have applied for multiple grants and have been fortunate so far,” McClure said. The handicap platform has been something people have wanted for years. Until now, the area set aside for people in wheelchairs was on the ground level of the arena. “This has been a long time coming,” she said. “In the past, the handicapped had to look through a chain-link fence and panels. The platform doesn’t impede anyone’s view. It will make it nicer for everyone.” The platform is expected to seat 60 to 70 people. The foundation also helped pay for a new shade shelter at the north entrance of the fairgrounds where most of the handicapped parking is located. “Before now, when people would come in and drop off

grandma or grandpa, there was no place for them to sit and wait while the car was being parked,” McClure said. “The new shelter has benches and a concrete pad. It’s a nice addition to the fairgrounds.” To help beautify the fairgrounds, McClure said the foundation planted four memorial trees. Pink Grizzly Nursery of Missoula gave the foundation a large gift certificate that was used to buy perennials. Those were planted near the art building. In the future, McClure would like to see the foundation fund additional shade shelters scattered around the fairgrounds to encourage more people to make use of the public space. “We’ve had to take down so many mature trees over the last few years,” she said. “Melissa is trying really hard to make this a place that people use more. There has been something going on every weekend this summer, but there’s always room for people to just get away and relax.” The foundation’s main fundraiser is a paver project. It allows people to offer a tax-deductible $100 to buy a paver engraved with someone’s name or business. There are currently pavers at the south entrance and the floral barn. Plans call for adding them at the new shade shelter at the north entrance. Anyone interested in buying a paver or serving on the foundation should call the Ravalli County Fairgrounds Office at 406-363-3411. The foundation currently has five members. McClure said she would like to add a couple more. “We went with people who have a heart for the fair and the fairgrounds,” she said. “We try to work on big projects that may not get done without some outside funding. We’ve been pretty successful so far.”
