SIMPLE STEPS TO CREATE A TERRARIUM AT HOME: 29

1. Decide which plants will be used. Almost any plant can be used with low maintenance in the terrarium. Choose plants that have the same characteristics and can grow together properly. Classical plant for terrarium including (but not limited to) ferns, moss and succulent, and cacti. Choose plants that will remain small in size. You can make a terrarium as a home for bushy plants, but it is easier to take care of mini plants. Choose plants that would not grow out of the terrarium’s container. Plants that like the shade are best. Since the glass can magnify light, plants kept in the terrarium should be tolerant of low levels of light - if you save a thirsty crop-light in the dark, the plant can be stressed and die. Choose plants that are tolerant to high humidity. The level of humidity in the terrarium rises rapidly, so it is best to choose plants of the rain forest or wooded area that would be appropriate for such an environment and not the herbal plants such as the Mediterranean.

30

2. Choose containers for plants. Containers require glass and enough for plant roots. You can buy a new container or cleaning container you already own. A container that you can use an outdated fishbowl from your attic or buy a new container from the nearest store for growing crops. > Cloche (compartment cover) - the container has a high moisture level, and cloche should be opened occasionally to plants can breathe fresh air. > Lantern cloche - although the humidity increases, lantern cloche easier to exchange air. > Bell jar or pharmacist’s jar are suitable for a tall-sized terrarium. > Wardian case - either closed or not airtight. > Aquarium or fish bowls - the aquarium can be used for the terrarium, and can be left open or fitted with a piece of glass. > Vases or soup bowls - terrarium still works with the top open, although you have to water the plants in containers that are not airtight.

31

3. Decide where to save the terrarium. Terrarium is great because the treatment is very minimal, but must be placed in an ideal location. > Light: All plants need light, including the plants in the terrarium. But do not get hit by direct light, since the glass magnifies the light. Instead, choose a location that receives plenty ofindirect light. You can also use fluorescent lights, but follow the safety rules and buy gardening lights in this regard. > Temperature: Terrarium must be kept in a warm room. > On the right surface: Avoid putting the terrarium on fine furniture or, surfaces that are easily damaged.

32

4. Buy the materials. To make a terrarium, you need: > Potting soil. Choose a light soil with plenty of drainage, and it is better to be accompanied with sphagnum / peat. > Small stones or gravel. In addition to good drainage when placed in the bottom of the terrarium. > Pieces of activated charcoal. This is to ensure the soil remains fresh. > The sheets of moss. The sheets of moss useful if aligned at the bottom of the terrarium, because it serves as a “sponge to sweep the excess water. > Gloves. > Decoration! Choose any decoration that you want to beautify the terrarium, as long as it will not be damaged by exposure to water. E.g. miniature garden gnome, shells, rocks, small figurines or ornaments for the aquarium.
