VISIT BERLIN A C I T Y- T R I P T O “ M I T T E ”

s.wert

Sandra Siewert and Dirk Berger are fascinated by urban environments, which are inspirational for their work. The German duo prettifies curtains, pillows, lamps and bedclothes with graphic prints. All their crafts are influenced by architecture or historical building structures – that’s the way they declare their love for their city. s-wert-design.de

Scatolina Quasi Moda

An own-brand Quasi Moda has existed for 20 years. It aims at women on the hunt for the out of the ordinary: feminine, cool, stylish and elegant. The collection is supplemented by brands such as Espresso, Kookai, Avoca, Latina, Dept, Le Solei and St Martins. Dreams come true in this calm and laid-back atmosphere, supported by professional assistance. The vast number of accessories top off the range.

Scatolina sells beautiful things made of paper: hand-made paper bins, lamps, boxes, photo albums, books, sculptures, jewellery and, of course, plain paper in every variation and colour. This shop helps you find fancy little presents for your friends or for yourself. Things you buy here aren’t really essential in life but they beautify it.

Calypso Five Monkeys

“Five Monkeys” stands for the five founders of this shop. Their initial plan was to create a platform for their own creativity. The similarly named label offers a wide range of bags – hand-made in Italy or ecologically produced – anything is available. There is even a «bio» hairstylist next door and regular exhibitions make the experience perfect. five-monkeys.de

Her love for shoes inspired Rosemarie to open a shop. Unlike other shoe stores you are going to find second hand foot wear from all epochs. Film producers are known to equip their cast at Calypso as its unique collection is not to be found elsewhere. Extraordinary expectations and needs may be fulfilled here. calypsoshoes.com

Haarstation The stylish atmosphere in «Haarstation» makes deciding between the two saloons fairly hard. A visit to «Haarstation» is like attending an event. The ambiance with electro tunes reminds you of a trendy lounge bar than a hairdresser. The welleducated hair stylists take their time to properly consult you before starting with the scissors. Anything from plain haircuts to coloration and a party-like hairstyling is available. Appointments can’t be made. Rates are tightly controlled to meet anyone’s budget. If you don’t stop at «Haarstation» you have definitely missed the bus! haarstation-berlin.de

THE STOHEAD FROM THE STREET... Like many other graffiti artists, Christoph Hässler aka. STOHEAD started in this art form in his teens. Being a graffiti artist is not much different from being a cook. A graffiti artist’s pan is a black book and his dipper is a pencil. Born in 1973, he spent his teens «when shoelaces had neon colours, jeans were tight and teens went to school on plastic skateboards – carrying a seethrough suitcase or wearing an Iron Maiden patch on their jackets». He wasn’t too impressed by popular trends back in those days and focused on his passion: «sketching». Fascinated and captured by this form of expression – full of style, funk and energy – he was keen to shape his neighbourhood. That was the point in time when he started «tagging» in 1988. Cans and caps became his instruments the monotone concrete walls of Schwäbisch Hall his stage. He composed piece after piece. His skills progressed and his techniques changed over the years. 3D letters emerged from simple typography and complex characters from draft sketches. But he didn’t forget his roots and kept on working on his own style. Years had passed and more experience gained by the time he moved to Hamburg in 1998.

He decided to go independent and work as a freelance artist, joining a post-modern artist community. STOHEAD and his crew realized numerous graffiti projects such as the urban discipline exhibitions or the dock-art piece in Hamburg’s harbour. Apart from writing on walls he also started experimenting with comic characters. Nowadays he lives and works in Germany’s capital, Berlin. His most current project is exhibited at a Carhartt gallery in Weil-am-Rhein.

Founded in 1996 in Lucerne, Switzerland, alexandfelix merged the extraordinary talents and skills of Alex Gertschen and Felix Meier. They prove their claim to stand for «photography that comes from new perspectives and that opens new eyes». Their unique creations drag viewers into alien worlds they have never been in before. An entirely new experience based on alexandfelix’ approach to stage new worlds, driven by an ambition to uncover visual languages that have never been spoken before. alexandfelix have exhibited internationally meeting universal approval for their work and achievements. In the scope of one of their latest projects “Queens”, models emerge from their surroundings and become part of it. They leave their backdrop and carry objects as if they were pieces of clothing and by doing so turn into some kind of a backdrop themselves. On their bodies, the wondrous empire of the “Queens” is spread out.

The insignia of power, the signs of their dreamland, hang from their bodies, stick to their skin, and stand above their heads and shoulders. These queens have truly incorporated theirsensual empire each herself a proud queen.

„Queens is an intriguing gallery of showily dressed dignitaries beyond this world“ The more one contemplates a picture the less obvious it is that there is a queen in its midst: the magic emanates from the details, from the objects used for purpose other than intended and their creative reinterpretation from the desire to find even more unexpected details. w w w.al ex andfel i x .c om

BACK TO BASICS

ATLANTIC RAINFOREST INSTITUTION “SRARFI”

Seven years ago I travelled to Brazil for the first time in order to visit one of our local surf camps. I returned with a backpack full of inspiration, a new attitude towards life and respect for the rainforest and its native people. I cannot escape it anymore: The vast Atlantic Rainforest, its endless coasts, its unique flora and fauna have left me deeply impressed. Not only did the indescribable beauty of this treasure of nature impress me but also I was grateful for what it provides. I came down with a painful indigestion that left me suffering beside a toilet for two days and two nights. As I reject modern chemical medicines I was rescued by my neighbour’s wife. She gave me a cup of tea made of a medical plant called Guarana mixed with nasty tasting herbs. I drank it. It was the most terrible tea I had ever tasted. But it cured me and I felt like being reborn within an hour. Local surfers use Guarana extract to boost their energy. I tried it in this context as well – what an experience – I was surfing one wave after the other that day – for hours and hours.

In a long night talk with my girlfriend an idea came to mind would a natural energy shot based on Guarana work in our celestial sphere? The idea became reality and SuddenRush Guarana was born The natural and chemical-free energy shot from the rainforest and for the rainforest. 10% of Guarana’s yearly gains are donated to projects preserving the Atlantic Rainforest. Ambassadors such as snowboard legend “Terje Haakonsen”, “Nicolas Müller” or UK singer Malia stand up for and proclaim the Guarana message! The Atlantic Rainforest is a true paradise that needs to be preserved for the sake of all of us! 93% of its original size has been destroyed during the last 500 years, only 7% are left! (Compare: Today about 80% of the Amazon remains) Help to save one of our last tropical paradises by uploading your profile picture or company logo to: www.atlanticrainforest.org Original Text in German by Chris Bachmann, translated and edited by Dan Nessler.
