Now is the time to revive, recharge and refresh. Sometimes that means embracing the best of the past like current trends in art deco interior design and ‘70s fashion. Maybe it means turning your closet into a mini-boutique. What fun!
Or perhaps, it’s about learning what snails can do for your skin (long known by Korean women). Then there’s cryotherapy; a kind of super icepack approach to reducing pain and inflammation. For profuse sweaters, Botox may be what you need to keep your pits dry.
And forget what your mom used to say: “Ladies and gentlemen do not chew gum.” As it turns out, studies show that chewing gum can boost mental performance.
Spring also is a good time to drive/ride in convertibles — we explore what’s out there. And a good time to plan a river cruise down the Danube or trips to unusual wine regions like Wales, Romania, Luxembourg or Austria. Who knew?
As you travel, a carry-on suitcase may be all you need, making your airport experience oh-so-much easier.
And just for fun, in this issue we explore high-stakes poker, while offering a 101 on whiskey and aging.

NO JOB IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL!
by Valerie Demetros
If spring cleaning your closet sounds daunting, look at it this way — a proper closet cleanout is like self-care. Decluttering and organizing reduces stress every time you enter, and it feels like a true accomplishment.
Your goal is to feel like you entered a boutique. You’re breathing life into your wardrobe and making it easier to reimagine styles. It can be difficult to eliminate things you loved, paid for or may need again.
But just-in-case thinking keeps your closet full of unnecessary items.
Now is also the time to rotate with the seasons while weeding out unwanted items.
Let’s take it step by step. Take everything out of the closet. Yes, that’s right. The only way to assess everything is to see it. It may look like a tornado touched down, but trust the process. It also gives you a chance to vacuum and clean.
Separate by type of clothing and seasons. For instance, with sweaters go through each and think when you wore it last and it fit. If you haven’t worn it for a year, it’s time to break up. Separate by resell and donate. For all items, ask yourself one question: “Would I buy this again?”
For items you’re keeping, check for needed repairs or cleaning. There’s nothing worse than grabbing something with a stain or missing button. Store them in a sealed container with cedar to avoid moth issues. Use a wellsealed box or container that fits on shelves or ideally in another closet.
For items you just can’t part with, create a Question Box and store it away. After a year, it’s time to say goodbye if you haven’t missed anything. If you find yourself grabbing something and wearing it before the year’s up, add it back to your closet rotation.
You may have items you wear occasionally like gowns, dresses for weddings, satin slacks, etc. Even shoes you break out infrequently to shine at a party. Make sure everything is clean and fits, sometimes it hasn’t been worn in years. Now it’s time to return everything to the closet. If done
well, you’ll have much less to organize. Consider clear shoe boxes for easy identification and storage, and find drawer dividers for socks, lingerie and more. Create a posh boutique closet by replacing mismatched hangers for velvet hangers in one color (face them all the same way). Arrange clothes by style, color or category like casual or dressy. Do whatever works for you and remember, you can always change it. If you have room, hang a pretty mirror, chandelier or elegant wallpaper for an upscale look. Enjoy.
Imagine owning a property in a stunning vacation destination, a place where luxury meets relaxation. Your investment works for you even when you’re not there.
Vacation rental investments have surged in popularity, blending the allure of owning a retreat with the practical benefits of generating income. Whether you dream of a beachside villa, a cozy mountain chalet or a sleek urban penthouse, vacation rentals offer a path to indulgence and financial growth.
Vacation rentals have become a preferred accommodation choice for travelers seeking personalized, upscale experiences. Platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo and luxuryfocused services have made it easier than ever for property owners to showcase their spaces to a global audience. This demand has turned vacation properties into lucrative investments, often delivering higher returns than long-term rentals.
The foundation of a successful vacation rental investment is location. Properties in high-demand areas such as beach destinations, ski resorts, cultural hubs or scenic countryside locales attract consistent bookings. Proximity to attractions, restaurants and more amenities also enhances appeal.
Luxury is key to standing out in the competitive vacation rental market. Features like infinity pools, high-end finishes, outdoor living spaces and stunning views not only justify premium pricing but elevate the guest experience. For urban rentals consider properties in trendy neighborhoods with easy access to dining and entertainment.
Managing a vacation rental requires attention to detail, from guest communication to maintaining a fivestar ambiance. For investors who prefer a hands-off approach, professional property management companies can handle everything from bookings to housekeeping. While these come at a cost, they ensure your property consistently meets high standards, earning stellar reviews and repeat guests.
Start by curating a space that exudes style and comfort. Invest in quality linens, plush furnishings and state-of-the-art appliances. Thoughtful extras, like a welcome basket of local treats or a guidebook highlighting hidden gems, can leave a lasting impression.
Technology also plays a significant role. Keyless entry, smart home systems and fast Wi-Fi are not just conveniences — they’re expectations for upscale travelers.
As with any investment, vacation rentals come with risks. Changing seasons can lead to fluctuating income, and maintenance costs can add up, especially for luxury properties. Research local regulations, as some areas impose strict rules or taxes on short-term rentals.
Understanding the market is essential. A thorough feasibility study considering occupancy rates and potential competition can help you make an informed decision.
High-end sportswear for men represents the perfect blend of functionality, innovation and sophistication, redefining how modern men approach activewear.
Once relegated to gyms and athletic fields, sportswear has evolved into a versatile wardrobe essential that effortlessly transitions from workout sessions to social settings.
The hallmark of this sportswear lies in its use of advanced fabrics and cutting-edge technology. Moisturewicking materials, temperatureregulating textiles and anti-odor treatments ensure these garments are as practical as they are stylish.
Luxury sportswear brands incorporate premium materials like merino wool blends, engineered mesh and stretchinfused fabrics, providing comfort and durability. These innovations make such sportswear ideal for intense workouts, long travel days or even casual evenings out.
Attention to fit, design is another defining characteristic of sophisticated sportswear. Unlike traditional athletic apparel, this activewear focuses on
tailoring and aesthetics, offering clean lines and refined silhouettes — from slim-fit joggers and tapered shorts to performance shirts that double as everyday wear. Neutral color palettes, minimalist details and discreet branding ensure this sportswear remains versatile, easily pairing with casual or smart-casual ensembles.
Investing in high-end sportswear means choosing pieces that are durable and stand the test of time. Brands such as Rhone, Vuori and Lululemon have collections that combine form and function.
Luxury sportswear caters to the modern man who values both practicality and elegance. It’s not just about dressing for the activity but about making a statement of refined taste and attention to detail. In a world where active lifestyles are increasingly celebrated, high-end sportswear ensures that men can move through their day with confidence, comfort and impeccable style.
It’s more than just apparel — it’s a lifestyle upgrade.
It’s that time of year, time for cruising down the highway with the top down, wind in your hair, light winking off your sunglasses and nothing but blue sky. It’s the freedom of the open road — music playing and troubles left behind.
Convertibles fall under two categories: hardtops and soft tops. Some drivers favor hardtops because the metal roof is more secure with better insulation when it’s cold or rainy. However, hardtops tend to appear oddly proportioned, making soft tops more attractive. Soft tops also tend to be less expensive than hardtops, if that matters.
Let’s look at a few of the best convertibles out there right now.
The DB12 is Aston Martin’s latest grand tourer, and the Volante is the convertible version offering a V-12powered engine with style. It has the same 671-hp, twin-turbo, 4.0-liter, V-12 engine as the DB12. It offers a sumptuous cabin featuring high-end materials that can be customized with various trims and upholstery colors. Rides like a dream and looks like one too.
The Bentley Continental GT is a grand touring two-door convertible with high-end styling and extravagant luxury worth its six-figure price. Choose
the powerful V-8 or the soon-to-bediscontinued W-12 engine — both are twin-turbocharged. Look for Bentley’s best materials including top-end leather, rich wood and textured metal trim.
BMW 2 Series has a stylish lineup of luxury coupes and convertibles.
The soft top convertible model’s sleek silhouette looks luxe with the drop top, even when the roof is closed. The driver and front passenger enjoy standard sport seats, but rear passengers may find it a little cramped.
Audi TT offers both a coupe and soft top convertible. The coupe seats four but the convertible is a two-seater.
Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system comes standard, and you can add a turbocharged engine. When the soft top is folded, it sits on the car’s back deck. Forgo a smooth look without sacrificing cargo space with an open roof.
Mercedes-Benz C63 S Cabriolet is the amped-up AMG version (their performance division) of the regular C63. It may not look like a muscle car, but it’s all serious muscle under a slick cover with a 503-hp, 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8. Push a button, the soft-top folds into the back of the car and you get full access to that power.

The right scents have the power to transform living spaces, evoke emotions and leave a lasting impression on guests. They can set the mood for a quiet night at home or a festive gathering. There are plenty of ways to make your home smell nice, from essential oil diffusers to fragrance layering. Your goal is to find the signature scent that subtly speaks to you.
First, consider ambiance. It’s one of the first things designers notice, and scent plays a huge role. Try and choose a scent that complements your home’s décor.
The last thing you want is to use a home fragrance as a coverup. Clean smelly carpets, air out cooking odors and wash the dog. Think of it this way: adding fragrance on top of bad smells only exaggerates it.
Aromatherapy candles use essential oils and offer captivating scents and therapeutic properties. When burned, they add a cozy vibe and release oils, creating an immersive sensory experience.
Scented reed diffusers are decorative containers with fragrance oil and reeds that absorb oil and release fragrance. They are low-maintenance and provide a constant, subtle scent.
For another subtle choice, scented papers can be decorative as well as infused with delicate fragrances. You can add to drawers, suitcases or your laundry room.
Once you’ve decided how to distribute your scent, which one is right? There are plenty of ways to create a signature scent. You can find a professional or experiment at home.
No matter your method, think about what mood you want to set in your home, what scents induce that feeling and what your favorite scents are. This gives you a baseline to start searching, then work out the right balance through experimentation.
The four main fragrance families are amber, floral, fresh and woody. Scents are made up of top notes, middle notes and base notes. You may want to work a floral in one room and woody in another to create your signature scent.
Note: when you expose yourself long enough, you become used to it. That’s when you usually add more. Don’t — it can overpower guests. A subtle scent is far more effective at exuding luxury than an eye-watering dose.

It’s time for spring cleaning, once again. Although you probably have a professional cleaner once or twice a month, there are still areas they don’t tackle consistently. That’s where you come in. Don an old T-shirt, enlist the kids and get to work. Your regular cleaner probably isn’t cleaning inside your oven each visit. Give it a deep clean, soaking the shelves and wiping down the inside. This goes for the inside of the microwave. Depending on how many and how large your windows are, you may want to tackle them yourself or hire an outside company. It’s time to let the sunshine in and view the beauty of the season. If you’re washing them, vinegar and water do just fine. It may seem like a daunting task but take everything out of the refrigerator (have a cooler handy for items that need to stay cold) and give it a good scrubbing. You’ll be surprised at the sticky residue in there. It feels amazing to see a sparkling, clean refrigerator inside and out.
Now it’s time to get the kids involved. Give them a wet cloth and let them crawl along the floor as they clean the baseboards. Have them duck behind furniture, watching to make sure nothing falls.
Dive into the pantry and get rid of expired items or nearly empty. Consolidate if you have a few of something opened, wipe off the shelves and organize as you return everything. If your regular cleaner isn’t hitting those ceiling fans, get a long-handled cleaner and wipe them down. Be careful, they collect an immense amount of dust.
Head outside and attack your outdoor furniture — soap it up, hose it down and dry it off. Now is the time to lounge outside with a margarita. Replace cushions and update pillows while you’re out there.
While you’re at it, try to declutter, sort through unwanted items and donate them. You can even rearrange furniture and add bright new pillows to give your home a fresh, spring-cleaned look.

The term “prefabricated luxury home” may sound like an oxymoron to some, but it’s an idea whose time has come.
Also known as modular homes, prefab structures are constructed from sections manufactured in a factory, then transported to the homesite to be assembled by a trained crew. This process reduces waste of materials for a more efficient and sustainable result, one of many advantages inherent to these residences.
They are distinct from manufactured or mobile homes, which are completely produced and assembled in a factory and then transported to the lot. They are regulated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and can be built to less stringent standards than local jurisdictions require. Modular homes, on the other hand, must meet all local building codes.
The modular home industry has evolved and is able to build larger, more customized houses as well as the “tiny homes” that have been gaining attention as an affordable housing option. Prefab luxury homes can be almost any size and are often made of concrete and steel framing, more durable materials that are especially important in areas facing the risk of wildfires or other natural disasters. They can be custom or semi-custom and designed by your architect of choice, depending on the manufacturer you work with.
Flooring, counters and finishes can be as highend as you choose, and installing premium appliances and smart home features can add to the luxurious ambiance, though naturally they will affect the bottom line. Modular or prefab homes typically cost roughly 10% to 25% less than a comparable site-built one.
Luxury prefab or modular homes carry an edge in numerous areas over a conventionally built home, but there are a few potential downsides you should consider as you decide whether one of these is right for your situation:
• Financing options may be more limited, since some lenders are more cautious about backing these types of homes.
• Modular homes generally appreciate at the same rate as conventional houses, but in some instances they still must combat a perception problem that can affect value.
• Finding land zoned for modular or prefabricated homes in the location you desire can be challenging.
The vintage appeal of brooches, which are jeweled or metal pins worn by women or men on nearly any piece of clothing you can think of, has never really died and is seeing a resurgence that has swept runways and red carpets. Their gleam and glitter catches eyes and hearts across the board, wherever they’re worn. Here are a few ideas for how to style your outfits with these elegant little secret weapons.
Try pinning a brooch just below your collarbone. If you’re following tradition it should go on your left side of your chest (anyone facing you would see it on the right), but the rules have been relaxed in recent years to highlight your neckline and jawline. Be careful when pinning these and don’t gather too much material behind the pin, which could give it a knotted appearance. Also, make certain the material is strong enough to support the weight of the brooch.
Dresses offer multiple places to pin a brooch and a great opportunity to wear multiple brooches. They work best on solid-color backgrounds so they
don’t clash or get lost among patterns. Brooches can be placed on the left or right side of the chest, at the waist, just below the bustline or where shoulder straps meet the bodice of the dress. When dealing in multiples it’s wise to choose pins with some vague relationship to each other, and wear an odd number of pins unless dealing with pairs.
Pin small matching or complementary brooches to either side of a button-down shirt collar to memorably adorn it while maintaining impeccable styling.
Find an elegant jeweled brooch to secure a scarf around your neck, pinning it front and center to make a bold statement. Brooches can be worn on many other accessories to elevate them — try them on shoes, bags and hats to create a dazzling statement piece. They can even be strung onto a necklace.
Jackets also can be accessorized with multiple brooches, in a cluster on one lapel or distributed across both.

You’ve seen the ads describing a river cruise as exotic, picturesque and tranquil. Last fall, I set sail on a Danube River cruise and discovered they were telling the truth.
Unlike an ocean liner, a river cruise offers a more intimate, catered
experience. All ships have just a main dining room, lounge, bar and reception. Some also include a pool and gym.
We chose a four-night, five-day Avalon Waterways cruise with just 100 passengers and 49 staff on board (others house up to 190 passengers).
Most include free Wi-Fi, gourmet meals and drinks during all meals and happy hours.
Sailing on the Danube affords views of ancient castles, lush vineyards and old-world villages. The river, called the Queen of Europe’s Rivers by Napoleon, is Europe’s second-longest river
running 1,775 miles. It’s a mile wide and touches 10 countries including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany and Hungary. The Danube is most popular in summer, but spring and fall offer temperate weather with fewer crowds. We traveled in September and encountered a little rain, but
it didn’t dampen our good time. French balcony rooms with a wallto-wall window give a veranda vibe with a comfy sitting area. Avalon offers a balcony-facing bed, leaving the view on display as you lounge in bed, which I highly recommend.
Most river cruises offer at least one free excursion at each port, or you can explore on your own. Our cruise offered bike and guided walking tours, daily yoga and exercise classes as well as nightly happy hours and entertainment.
In Budapest, you’ll dock close to the main cities and bridges, so there’s plenty to do. Hungary’s capital unites two formerly separate cities, Buda and Pest, and you’ll want plenty of time to explore. Arrive a few days early, if possible.
On the Pest side, visit the Great Market Hall with exotic foods and spices, and don’t miss the famous Italian Renaissance-style New York Café, opened in 1894. Then follow the Chain Bridge to hilly Buda with its winding, cobbled streets and amazing city views.
We stopped in Melk, Austria, along the way and toured Melk Abbey, Europe’s most remarkable baroque monastery overlooking the river. Originally a castle, it was gifted to the Benedictine order in the 11th century and now houses the monastery on one side and a high school on the other.
Our final destination was the stunning city of Vienna, a European capital of music, architecture and art. The city is jam-packed with outstanding food, museums and palaces.
Take a tour of the Vienna opera house in the city’s historic center, which is an UNESCO World Heritage site. We managed to find tickets to a beautiful Vivaldi Four Seasons concert at St. Charles’ Cathedral (Karlskirche), with its impressive dome and ornate décor.

This is the time of year when it’s time to think about what’s new for spring! Warm weather has not yet arrived, but fashion for spring certainly has. Here are a few trends to look forward to.
1. The '70s vibe is alive and well. Wide-legged pants, free-spirited dresses and suede accessories are featured prominently for spring 2025.
2. Plaid is not just for fall. Once a staple of autumn, plaid prints are seeing a revival by many designers. While florals are still a must for spring, consider adding some plaid patterns as well.
3. Dressing up is back in style. Fitted jackets in bold patterns can be worn both with denim or a nice pant. Embellishing the jacket with retro brooches or modern day jeweled pins makes a great statement. Don’t forget about charms! Charms are on everything for spring. Necklaces, bracelets and bag charms will be seen everywhere.
4. The “more is more” look is here for spring. Jeweled tops and dresses make for a glamorous wardrobe for the new season. This is the time to wear your pearls AND dressy scarf.
5. Boho chic is still very in style for 2025. Maxi skirts, fringe and embroidery are staples of the boho look. Peasant style blouses and semi-sheer fabrics create many opportunities for layering.
6. Animal prints are still in fashion. Besides the popular leopard, lynx, zebra and snake are showing up in outerwear and footwear.
7. The skinny jean and the barrel jean trend will both be widely seen in 2025. Mid-rise jeans are very prevalent and are just as popular as the high rise. Jorts are also in many stores for spring. The jort is a knee length baggy jean short. These are not for every body type. If it isn’t flattering definitely stay away from this look.
Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your wardrobe! Both local boutiques and department stores are stocked and ready to welcome you to a new season.
Crafting the consummate home bar isn’t just about functionality; it’s about creating a space that elevates every cocktail experience. Whether you’re a budding mixologist or someone who enjoys a well-crafted drink after a long day, here’s what you need to design a home bar.
Choose a location that feels inviting and functional. A small nook, an unused corner or even a dedicated bar cart can work wonders.
For those with ample space, a builtin bar complete with cabinetry and lighting adds a touch of opulence. Ensure your layout includes space for preparation, storage and display. A countertop for mixing drinks and open shelves for showcasing glassware and bottles are must-haves.
A well-stocked bar begins with the right tools. Invest in high-quality essentials like a shaker, jigger, muddler, bar spoon, strainer and a mixing glass. For serving, include a variety of glassware — rocks glasses, highball glasses, coupes and martini glasses are nonnegotiable. Don’t forget a stylish ice bucket and tongs for an elevated touch.
Fortify your bar with a curated selection of spirits — vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whiskey and vermouth cover the basics. Add liqueurs like Cointreau, amaretto or Campari for depth. Keep mixers such as tonic water, soda and fresh juices on hand, along with bitters and garnishes like citrus, cherries and fresh herbs.
The design of your home bar should reflect your personal style while maintaining a sense of luxury. Use materials like marble, polished wood or glass for countertops and shelving. Incorporate a mirror or metallic accents to enhance the ambiance. Add dimmable lighting to set the mood and a few curated art pieces or vintage barware to add character.
Elevate your bar with extras like a wine fridge, a built-in ice maker or a cocktail recipe book for inspiration. Include seating options like leather barstools to make it a social space. Finally, don’t forget to personalize it — monogrammed coasters, a signature drink menu or a decanter set can make your home bar uniquely yours.

t only takes one trip with lost luggage to make you consider traveling with just a carry-on. For some, they never return to checking bags.
Let’s look at a few pros and cons, then talk about packing.
A carry-on bag is usually lighter, meaning packing goes quicker. Checking in at the airport becomes a breeze when you’re not waiting to check your bag.
Ever been on a flight that arrived early? What a joy — unless you now have to wait for your bag at the carousel. With a carry-on, you could have just strode out like a bandit.
On the other hand, a cancellation or missed connection can be a nightmare with a checked bag. With a carry-on, you have everything you need for the unexpected delay.
If you’re planning to try the carry-on life, here are 10 tips to make the most of it.
1. Double check airline requirements so you’re not stuck checking your bag. Budget airlines usually offer less space — usually 20 inches to 22 inches is a good bet.
2. For toiletries, if you’re heading to a big city, you can free up space by buying what you need there.
3. Make a list of what you’ll be doing. Are you hiking, dining, sightseeing, swimming? All of these need different clothing.
4. Create a checklist of essential items like medications, toiletries, etc.
5. Pack clothes that mix and match. Nice jeans can go sightseeing and dressed up later for a night out. Layering items means you’ll need less. Dresses also go from day to night with a change of shoes and jewelry.
6. Pack items you’ll wear more than once. Tops and sleepwear can be washed, so don’t go overboard. Homestays offer washer/dryer, or try a quick rinse in the sink or use the laundry service.
7. Limit shoes, they take up space. Pack small items inside your shoes and stick to three pairs — wearing your bulkiest on the plane.
8. Take the number of meds you’ll need in a small bag and bring a few extra in case of delays. Take a photo of the prescription.
9. Some people swear by packing cubes while others prefer to roll (I am a roller after trying both). Try each to see which one you prefer.
10. Go small — e-reader instead of books, travel-sized appliances, multicharging cable, travel-sized bathroom essentials, travel-sized makeup (Sephora has a good selection.)
Pro tip: Global Entry includes shorter TSA pre-check lines, no shoe or liquid removal and easy entry from foreign countries.
Whiskey is more than just a spirit — it’s a liquid story of craftsmanship, patience and nature’s subtle influences. At the heart of its journey from distillery to glass is the process of barrel aging. This critical stage is when raw distillate transforms into the rich, complex elixir that whiskey lovers revere. Let’s explore the essentials of whiskey aging and how barrels shape its flavor.
Most whiskey is aged in charred oak barrels, which serve a dual purpose. They filter out impurities and infuse the whiskey with a symphony of flavors, colors and textures. The type of oak — American, European or even Japanese — imparts distinct characteristics, with American oak lending vanilla and caramel notes, while European oak often adds spice and dried fruit complexities.
THE SCIENCE OF AGING
During aging, whiskey interacts with the wood in three main ways: extraction, oxidation and evaporation.
• Extraction — As whiskey seeps into the barrel’s charred surface, it absorbs flavors like vanilla, caramel and smoky notes, as well as tannins that add structure and depth.
• Oxidation — Over time, air enters the barrel through the wood’s pores, softening harsh alcohol tones and developing richer, more rounded flavors.
• Evaporation — Known as the “angel’s share,” a portion of whiskey evaporates during aging, concentrating the flavors left behind.
The aging process can last from a few years to decades, with the duration and conditions (temperature, humidity and barrel size) dramatically influencing the final product.
Barrel aging is a symphony of variables. For instance, first-fill barrels impart stronger flavors than those used multiple times, while smaller barrels accelerate aging due to a higher wood-to-whiskey ratio. Additionally, climate plays a significant role. In warmer regions, whiskey ages faster as the liquid expands and contracts with temperature fluctuations, drawing more from the wood.
Aging whiskey is as much an art as it is a science. Too little time in the barrel can leave it harsh and underdeveloped, while too much can overpower it with woody notes. The master distiller’s skill lies in identifying the perfect moment when the whiskey reaches its peak balance of flavor and complexity.
igh-stakes poker has become an arena for the ultra-rich, where the chips aren’t just markers of the game but symbols of power, risk and mastery. With buy-ins starting at $1 million, these games redefine what it means to live on the edge.
At its core, poker is a game of strategy, skill and nerve. For the elite, it’s also a stage to showcase their daring and intellect. High-stakes games offer a unique thrill — one that even private jets, yachts and art collections can’t replicate.
For billionaires and high-networth individuals, the stakes add gravity and intensity to what might otherwise be just another game.
As author Molly Bloom noted in her book about the underground poker scene in Los Angeles, “For the most part, these were men who had risked it all to attain enormous success. Risked, past tense. …. They craved the adrenaline of the gamble: that was what kept them coming back. It was much more than just a game — it was escapism, adventure, fantasy.”
Entrepreneurs, hedge fund magnates, tech titans and celebrities often are regulars in these exclusive poker circles. These individuals, accustomed to high-pressure decision-making in their professional lives, thrive on the tension and uncertainty of poker.
Many of these games are held in private luxury suites or on exclusive properties, far from the eyes of the public. Some, like those in Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio or the “Big Game” in Macau, have become legendary in poker lore. It’s not uncommon for these sessions to run for days, with fortunes changing hands over the course of a single night.
High-stakes poker isn’t just about the millions on the table; it’s about the psychology of risk.
When the buy-in is so high, it creates an atmosphere where every decision carries enormous consequences. For some, the staggering stakes are a small price to pay for the adrenaline rush of the game.
Many ultra-wealthy players see poker as more than just recreation. It’s an extension of their business instincts. Bluffing, reading opponents and making bold moves mirror the skills they use in their industries.
These games have captured the imagination of the wider world. Televised high-stakes poker matches and online platforms like PokerGO have brought the drama to a global audience, giving fans a glimpse of the tension and glamour behind the velvet curtain.
“Where there is no wine, there is no love.”
– Euripides
f you’re a wine connoisseur, you’ve already visited some of the world’s most popular wine regions. Maybe Tuscany for the region’s world-renowned Chianti, or perhaps Bordeaux with its reputation for opulent reds. At the very least, you’ve been to Napa for its rich cabernet sauvignon. But wander outside of the norm and you may be surprised to hear that places like Luxembourg, Wales, Austria and Romania, although unusual, produce some excellent grapes and unusual wines. Luxembourg has one of the smallest wine-growing regions in Europe. It’s tucked between two of the world’s largest wine producers: Germany and France. Smaller region means smaller production and limited ability to export, but fortunately the limited size of the Moselle Valley doesn’t affect the high quality of wine created there. Known primarily for dry and sparkling white wines, its most popular are rieslings and a sparkling wine called Crémant de Luxembourg, made in the style of champagne. For a treat, visit Caves St. Martin for a walking tour of their wine caves in Remich. Wales is in a somewhat rainy, chilly part of the UK so may not at first sound like a good environment to grow wine. It turns out the climate is ideal for certain kinds of wines. With good drainage, hilly landscapes and winds from the sea, Wales produces pinot
noir, chardonnay and 18 other types of grapes for award-winning wines. The Romans initiated wine making here over 2,000 years ago, giving Wales quite a history in the industry. Wine production increased 70% in the last decade with 15 wineries across the country. Look for sparkling wines from Llanerch Vineyard, which won competitions in Italy, and some cheeky rosés.
Austria is known for music, architecture and food, particularly Vienna. But don’t overlook their wine. Vienna’s wine, Wiener Gemischter Satz, is world class. Its history with grapes goes back to 1132 AD and now has 630 producers on 1,700 acres. Producers focus mainly on white grapes like grüner geltliner, riesling and chardonnay. Check out Wieninger Winery, with vineyards on both sides of the Danube, making Grand Select chardonnays and pinot noirs.
Romania is Europe's fifth-biggest winegrower, producing more wine than New Zealand. Wine has been renowned in Drăgăşani since the 16th century. Family-owned wineries are conveniently close together offering an easy wine trail with warm welcomes. Here you’ll find merlot, pinot noir and pinot grigio as well as more interesting local varieties, including the rare white grape crâmpoşie selecţionată , and reds like novac and negru de drăgăşani , many of which are only grown in Romania.

DOESN’T SOUND LUXE — UNTIL YOU TRY IT
In the ever-evolving world of luxury skin care, innovation meets tradition in unexpected ways.
One such marvel is snail mucin, components of the natural secretion known as mucus.
Long revered in Asian beauty circles, snail mucin has become a global sensation, celebrated for its transformative benefits.
The use of snail mucin in beauty routines dates to ancient Greece. It wasn’t until modern-day Korean beauty brands began to harness its potential that snail mucin became a global phenomenon.
When extracted from the slime trails left by snails, this ingredient is collected humanely without serious harm to the creatures. The mucin is purified and incorporated into luxurious formulations, from serums and creams to sheet masks. Its efficacy and natural origin make it a favorite in the skin care industry’s push toward sustainability and clean beauty.
Snail mucin is backed by science. Packed with a cocktail of nutrients including glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, zinc and elastin, snail mucin offers a multifaceted approach to skin care. It is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin. The result? Plump, dewy skin that radiates health. It’s particularly effective for those battling dryness or seeking a luminous glow. Rich in glycolic acid and elastin, it supports cell turnover and boosts collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The natural growth factors in snail mucin also help repair damaged skin, fade scars and calm inflammation. This makes it ideal for individuals dealing with acne scars, redness or environmental stressors.
Glycolic acid in snail mucin provides gentle exfoliation, revealing smoother skin over time without irritation. Snail mucin enhances skin elasticity and improves skin tone. It’s a soughtafter ingredient for addressing hyperpigmentation and dullness.
High-end brands are elevating snail mucin products with exquisite packaging, sophisticated formulations and complementary ingredients such as gold, caviar extract or rare botanicals.
For instance, a $300 snail mucin serum might combine this potent ingredient with 24-karat gold flakes for added radiance, while a premium night cream might infuse it with truffle oil for an indulgent anti-aging experience.
HOW TO INCORPORATE SNAIL MUCIN INTO YOUR ROUTINE Snail mucin is versatile and suitable for all skin types. To unlock its benefits:
1. Cleanse and prep — Start with a gentle cleanser to ensure your skin is ready to absorb the product.
2. Serum or essence — Use a snail mucin-infused serum or essence after toning for a hydration boost and to address specific concerns like redness or dullness.
3. Moisturizer — Lock in the benefits with a rich snail mucin cream, especially during nighttime when the skin’s reparative processes are at their peak.
4. Mask it up — For an indulgent treat, opt for a snail mucin sheet mask to rejuvenate and pamper your skin.

As the chill of winter gives way to the freshness of spring, it’s the perfect time to rejuvenate your skin. Chemical peels are one of the most effective treatments to refresh and renew, helping you achieve a glowing complexion just in time for the new season. Chemical peels work by exfoliating the top layers of the skin, removing dead cells and stimulating collagen production. They address a range of skin concerns including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven tone and acne scars. The result? Smoother, brighter and more youthful-looking skin. Winter is the ideal time to invest in chemical peel treatments. During colder months, you’re naturally exposed to less sunlight, which is crucial because the skin becomes more sensitive to UV rays after a peel. With less risk of sun exposure, your skin has the chance to heal properly and deliver optimal results. Additionally, winter weather can leave your skin dry, dull and in need of extra care. A chemical peel helps to replenish and revive your complexion, making spring the perfect time to unveil your revitalized skin.
As we prepare for longer, sunnier days, a series of peels during winter ensures your skin is at its best when spring arrives. Don’t forget to complement your treatments with daily SPF protection; as healthy, radiant skin needs to be shielded from harmful UV rays year-round.
Revive your skin this spring by giving it the care and attention it deserves. Consult with a licensed provider to choose the perfect peel for your skin type and concerns. Embrace the season of renewal with a complexion that looks as fresh as spring itself!
f you tend to get super sweaty, you know what a struggle it can be. Hiding under jackets or using underarm pads can be annoying and uncomfortable.
You find yourself in a constant search for the right deodorant and antiperspirant, even buying clinicalstrength wipes that don’t work or dry up your pits too much. Oral medications can make your mouth and eyes too dry.
But there’s one more treatment many people with eternally wet pits swear keeps them dry for months: Botox (a brand of botulinum toxin A).
Hyperhidrosis, a condition in which your sweat glands are hyperactive, affects about 15 million people in this country. For some, even their hands and feet are affected.
We’re not just talking about a bit of sweat. Up to 70% of patients who suffer from severe hyperhidrosis have to change their clothes at least twice a day due to sweating.
Botox is FDA-approved to treat hyperhidrosis and can even help less severe cases. Research shows 50 units (25 shots) in each pit can significantly reduce underarm perspiration. For some people it lasts about six months, although some have reported staying dry for up to a year.
Most patients report an 80% to 90% reduction in sweating posttreatment. A 2020 study found a 90% decrease in sweat production just two weeks after injections.
Essentially, Botox restricts armpit moisture by temporarily blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that activates your sweat glands.
Another positive: less sweat means less odor since body odor comes from mixing sweat with bacteria on your skin. Meaning, the drier your pits the less you stink.
If this sounds promising, let’s consider the downsides. First off, poking needles in your underarms is just as painful as it sounds. Second, Botox isn’t cheap and isn’t always covered by insurance. Without insurance coverage it can cost thousands of dollars out of pocket.
It may not be the only way to treat excessive underarm sweating, but Botox is definitely an effective option. It’s certainly an option worth exploring for those who live with excessive sweating.
Red-light therapy has emerged as a soughtafter treatment for its myriad health benefits. Among its most notable applications is its role in enhancing muscle recovery, making it a favorite among elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts and wellness devotees.
RED-LIGHT THERAPY BASICS
Red-light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular processes. Unlike UV light, which can damage skin cells, red light has a healing effect. Its wavelengths, typically ranging between 600 and 850 nanometers, are absorbed by the mitochondria — the powerhouse of cells — boosting energy production and triggering regenerative processes. This non-invasive treatment is painless, with sessions lasting from 10 to 20 minutes. It can be administered through professionalgrade devices in luxury spas or high-end fitness centers or with at-home devices.
REDUCES INFLAMMATION
Intense physical activity causes microscopic tears in muscle fibers, leading to inflammation. While this is a natural part of muscle growth, excessive inflammation can cause soreness and delay recovery. Red-light therapy helps by reducing inflammatory markers in the muscles, allowing for faster and more comfortable recovery.
BOOSTS CIRCULATION
Improved blood flow is essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles. Red-light therapy stimulates the production of nitric oxide, a molecule
that dilates blood vessels and enhances circulation. This increase in blood flow not only speeds up recovery but also flushes out toxins and metabolic waste.
At the core of this therapy’s effectiveness is its ability to supercharge mitochondria. When exposed to red light, these energy centers produce more adenosine triphosphate, the molecule that fuels cellular activity. For muscles, this means quicker repair and regeneration of damaged tissues.
REDUCES MUSCLE SORENESS
Delayed onset muscle soreness can leave even the fittest individuals wincing after a rigorous workout. Red-light therapy alleviates this discomfort by accelerating the healing process and soothing inflamed tissues.
PREVENTS MUSCLE FATIGUE
This therapy also enhances performance by reducing muscle fatigue. By boosting cellular energy and reducing oxidative stress, it helps muscles work harder and longer without succumbing to exhaustion.
PROFESSIONAL VERSUS HOME USE
Many high-end resorts, spas and fitness centers now offer red-light therapy as part of their premium services, combining it with other therapies like cryotherapy and massage for a holistic approach to health.
For the ultimate at-home experience, luxurygrade red-light therapy devices are available, offering convenience without compromising efficacy. Brands like Joovv, PlatinumLED and Mito Red Light have developed sleek, design-forward panels and handheld devices.
The use of cold in medicine has been around for ages. If you’ve ever put an icepack on an injury, you’ve already tried cryotherapy.
Whole-body cryotherapy happens in a controlled environment, usually a small walk-in chamber, with temperatures at least -230 degrees Fahrenheit for two to three minutes.
The practice originated in Japan in the 1970s to treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. It’s now popular among professional athletes, celebrities and wellness buffs.
The theory is simple: exposing yourself to exceptionally cold temperatures activates the body’s fight or flight response. This response diverts blood flow from your extremities (arms, legs) to your vital organs to protect them from freezing.
Meanwhile, blood leaves any inflamed, injured areas. Once the treatment is over and you return to regular temperatures, reoxygenated blood pumps back through your entire body. This leaves you feeling revitalized and refreshed.
Many athletes swear by it since it reduces inflammation around soft-tissue injuries and stops their progression. They also report the release of adrenalin relieves pain and generates the feeling of exhilaration.
A 2015 study in Germany found that endurance athletes recovered more quickly and were able to perform better in the second of two running tests separated by an hour if they underwent whole-body cryotherapy in between. Some research has suggested it reduces levels of inflammation markers and the stress hormone cortisol, while increasing testosterone.
Of course, you could also sit in a tub of ice cold water. In some studies this is more effective at lowering the tissue temperatures and blood flow than whole-body cryotherapy. The one determining factor seems to be that cryotherapy is easier and less painful.
For each session, you’ll be given a pair of socks, gloves and slippers. You’ll wear only your underwear during the procedure but you’ll wear a robe in and out. You should also exercise a bit just afterward to get the blood flowing back into your limbs.
Your best bet is to try it and find out if it works for you. Whole-body cryotherapy sessions can start at $40 or more, with discounts for multiple sessions. Find a studio that is safe and recommended.
People have been chewing gum for thousands of years, the ancient Greeks chewed wads of mastic tree resin. Even Aristotle probably chewed gum.
Chewing gum has continued to grow in popularity and the global market was valued at $13.83 billion in 2023.
People chew gum for many reasons. Some assume it stimulates saliva and freshens breath, cleans teeth, aids digestion, relieves tension and improves mood.
Recently, gum has added to its reputation by being an effective booster of mental performance.
One study found that participants taking a battery of demanding cognitive tests who chewed gum during the testing significantly outperformed those who did not.
And before you ask — the sugar content of the gum had no effect on test performance since sugar-free gum generated the same benefits.
Why does chewing gum make a difference?
Researchers have proposed a few theories. One is that gum enhances performance due to mastication-induced arousal. Which means the act of chewing wakes you up, guaranteeing you’re fully focused. This leads to improved attention, learning, memory and performance.
Numerous studies have shown that gum chewing also elevates heart rate and blood pressure, cerebral blood flow. Improved cerebral blood flow during mastication in particular is associated with improved cognitive function.
Some researchers have even argued that the improved cognitive function was due to an increased availability of glucose in the brain associated with increased metabolic activity.
Chewing gum may also lessen stress hormones like cortisol, leading to reduced stress and improved mental functions and performance.
Studies also indicate that chewing gum during exposure to stress decreases plasma and salivary cortisol levels and reduces mental stress. In particular, chewing reduces stress-induced changes in the central nervous system, especially the hippocampus and hypothalamus.
Chewing gum may be a better test aid than caffeine, but it is short lived. Gum chewers only showed an increase in performance during the first 20 minutes of testing. After that, they performed the same to nonchewers.
The takeaway is simple: During a test, save the gum for the hardest part. It helps you concentrate but won’t last long.
Also keep in mind that chewing gum can cause jaw pain and cavities. There are alternative methods to performing well like getting a good night’s sleep. Getting in 20 minutes of physical activity is also proven to improve cognitive function.
While habit stacking — a method to help your brain more easily establish new habits — is a self-improvement strategy, it can be a way to treat yourself with some kindness, compassion and reflection.
Unlike fleeting trends, habit stacking is grounded in psychology and practicality. The concept of habit stacking is rooted in behavioral psychology, particularly in the work of James Clear, author of Atomic Habits
It capitalizes on the brain’s natural inclination to follow established patterns. By anchoring a new habit to an existing one, you minimize the mental friction often associated with change.
For example, if you’re already accustomed to a morning cup of matcha, you could pair it with a moment of gratitude journaling. The established habit of sipping your tea acts as a cue, triggering the new habit and embedding it into your routine with minimal effort.
To pamper yourself — and who couldn’t use some pampering to ease stress? — identify the habits already embedded in your routine. Choose a foundational habit that already feels good and helpful, and expand upon it.
For instance:
• After applying your serum during your skin care routine, spend two minutes practicing facial yoga for toned, glowing skin.
• When lighting your evening aromatherapy candle, take five deep breaths to release the day’s stress.
• Pair your weekly fresh flower arrangement with a moment of setting intentions for the week ahead.
As habits become ingrained, refine your stack by introducing small treats that amplify the experience. Upgrade your journal to one bound in Italian leather or replace your evening tea with a rare, artisanal blend. Here’s an example of what habit stacking can look like:
Morning routine — Energize, empower
• Anchor habit — Brew your morning coffee.
• Stack — While your coffee brews, spend three minutes meditating or visualizing your goals for the day. Once seated with your cup, jot down your top three priorities in an elegant planner.
Workday flow — Boost productivity
• Anchor habit — Begin your work session.
• Stack — Before opening your laptop, apply a focus-enhancing essential oil blend to your wrists. After completing each major task, stretch for a minute or hydrate with a glass of infused water.
Evening unwind — Relax and rejuvenate
• Anchor habit — Remove your makeup and cleanse.
• Stack — Follow your skin care with a gua sha massage, then reflect on three things you’re grateful for as you sip herbal tea.

chieving balance in life is much easier said than done. Our happiness and satisfaction is based on numerous factors woven into our existence, which one method characterizes as the “eight pillars of wellness.”
Each of these has a profound effect on how we experience our days, weeks and years. When setting priorities is dictated by society as well as our own preferences, it can be difficult to construct and engage in a balanced life. Fortunately, there are tools out there for assessing the specific aspects of our lives and our satisfaction with them.
One is the wellness wheel, which plots the essential sectors of life around the edges of a large circle and divides it into eight sections. Draw 10 smaller concentric circles within it. Assign scores of one to 10 points to each section, based on your own level of fulfillment with that part of your life.
Finally, you plot those scores by filling in the section corresponding to each aspect, with the circle’s center representing 0, to see each area in relation to the others and where you fall short.
This creates a “sunburst” chart, with the areas providing you with the most light radiating to the edge of the circle, while those that are dimmer hover closer to the core of the circle. Those are the areas you need to work on.
• Occupational — How satisfied am I with my job/career and prospects within that sphere?
• Intellectual — Am I happy with the mental stimulation I get from my job, hobbies, relationships, continual learning and other sources?
• Environmental — Am I content with the cleanliness and quality of the environment I live in?
• Financial — How satisfied am I with my monetary and investment status, now and in the future?
• Emotional — How confident am I in being able to identify and cope with emotions, especially negative ones like anger, anxiety, stress and sadness?
• Social — Am I happy with the amount and quality of my relationships and connections to others?
• Physical — Can I do more to improve my physical health with nutrition, exercise, disease prevention and managing illness?
• Spiritual — Do I know my ultimate purpose in life and how to fulfill it?

ith roots in 1920s France, art deco flourished after World War I. First termed Arts Décoratifs and later shortened to art deco, this decorative movement is back in vogue.
In New York, the Empire State and Chrysler buildings are icons of the movement. Art deco’s bold patterns and shapes make it a distinctive, unmistakable style blending nostalgia, glamour and refinement.
If you’re looking to add a bit of art deco to your home and style, work it in with small touches or go bold and re-imagine your interior. Just integrate it into your home without looking like a time machine exploded.
Here are a few ways to keep art deco fresh in modern interiors:
Replace tile in the bathroom or kitchen to add art deco in a modern way. Geometric shapes and throwback colors still look modern and are highly functional.
Finishes are a big component of the style. Brass was typical of the period, so include it in hardware, lighting or flatware. Though it isn’t as showy as gold, it can feel refined in a 1920s way.
Built-in bookshelves give that speakeasy aesthetic. Dark paint can set off the colors of the books. Art deco furnishings are large in scale but streamlined in silhouette. Big sideboards, armoires and large chairs work well.
Every art deco home needs velvet, which was originally made of pure silk. Most velvet furniture come in shades like royal blue or hunter green for stunning focal points like sofas or headboards. Add gold accents.
Arches are an easy way to complement the aesthetic, including mirrors or paintings with curves and a brass or gold finish. Rounded accent chairs or vintage-style sofas with a curved back also are great.
Home accents like vases, light fixtures, bookends and tabletop sculptures that highlight shapes like zigzags, trapezoids, triangles, circles, squares and more create the look. While most opt for geometric rugs or wallpaper, you can also use pillows, art or chairs.
Colors of the period are striking and bold and often punctuated with silver, chrome or black accents. Incorporate deep yellows, reds, greens, blues and pinks.
A monochromatic interior looks quite luxurious and expensive. It is a commitment to coordinate wallpaper, furniture and decor, slightly offset each item in a different shade of the same color family.
Statement lighting can channel the opulence of the era. Use spheres, brass or gold finishes, and straight, clean lines or arches. Choose aerodynamic modern lines and minimal details. Glass or chrome shades with etched glass like skyscrapers are fun.
Art deco isn’t for everyone, but its timeless appeal and elements have made it an enduring style. Go bold and experiment for a maximalist look that’ll never truly go out of style.
Even though the old-school advice always has been not to mix metals in design, those days are gone. The truth is, mixing the right metals can feel layered, add depth and interest and can elevate your space.
Your first rule of thumb should be that a hierarchy of finishes is key. Metal finishes split 50/50 or in thirds can feel chaotic and unfocused. Pick one finish as a focal point and incorporate other finishes as accents.
Start with a metal that reflects the overall aesthetic. For instance, satin or polished nickel works well in traditional spaces, while matte black brings a more contemporary feel.
Now for the accent metals, choose two and pay attention to the undertones. Usually, brass, copper, gold and nickel have warm undertones while stainless steel, chrome and other silver metals are cooler. Matte black is fairly neutral.
You can mix warm with cool, but be careful to avoid clashing. With two very different metals, like polished stainless steel with aged copper, bridge the gap with something in the middle, like brushed stainless steel.
Combining two polished finishes can result in a very glam look, so if that’s not your intent then choose matte to satin metals. Softer, more muted finishes that don’t have a lot of shine are easier to mix.
In general, stay away from high-shine finishes like chrome and polished brass, which are difficult to mix with other metals. Polished brass can quickly scream 1980s if you’re not careful. Aged, brushed or satin tends to work better.
For silver-tone finishes, use nickel over chrome. Its warm undertone matches better with brass finishes.
Continuing with your hierarchy of finishes, choose cabinet hardware in your primary finish and use the faucet for your accent metal. Consider mixed-metal light fixtures or furniture that combines both finishes.
In the end, of course, go with what you love. If you prefer the classic look of nickel, use it. Choose metals that reflect your personality and complement your existing paint colors and surfaces.
he colors we choose for our homes do more than just decorate — they shape how we feel, think and interact. Color psychology, the study of how hues influence mood and behavior, is a tool for transforming a home into a bright, welcoming haven. Whether refreshing walls or rethinking décor, understanding the emotional impact of colors can help you design spaces that feel as good as they look.
Warm colors like yellows, oranges and soft reds exude energy, happiness and warmth. Incorporating these tones into such shared spaces as the living room or kitchen can foster sociability and an inviting atmosphere. A pale yellow wall, for instance, reflects natural light beautifully, making a room feel airy and cheerful even on overcast days. To avoid overwhelming the senses, pair warm tones with neutral accents such as white or beige.
Cooler shades such as blues, greens and lavenders are synonymous with tranquility and relaxation. Perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms, these colors evoke a sense of calm and serenity. A soft pastel blue can mimic the soothing vastness of the sky, while sage green connects you to nature, promoting balance and rejuvenation. Incorporate textured throws or plush rugs in complementary tones for added comfort.
Neutral palettes are the epitome of understated luxury, offering a timeless canvas that works across design styles. Shades of white, gray and taupe can make spaces feel larger, cleaner and more sophisticated. Layering neutrals with natural materials like wood or linen adds depth and warmth, preventing a sterile or impersonal look. For a pop of brightness, accessorize with vibrant art, cushions, textiles or greenery.
Even the most minimalist interiors benefit from strategic pops of color. Accent walls, bold furniture pieces or statement décor items in hues like coral, teal or mustard can inject personality and energy into a space. These accents can be easily updated, allowing you to refresh your interiors seasonally or as trends evolve.
Color and lighting work hand in hand. A beautifully chosen palette can be undermined by poor lighting. Opt for warm, dimmable lights to enhance warm tones, or daylight LED bulbs to complement cool shades. Mirrors and metallic finishes amplify light and brighten spaces, making your color choices shine.
itchen appliances like oven mitts, trivets and ranges are staples. But there many gadgets that make life in the kitchen so much easier. Here’s a selection of kitchen gadgets worth buying, including those you’ll want to keep within arm’s reach.
AIR FRYER
Air fryers have become nonnegotiable. Cook burgers, pizzas, veggies and leftovers. Find the style that works for your food preferences.
OIL SPRAYER
Air fryers take less oil, but if you’re not looking to use canned oil spray, find a refillable oil sprayer to get even coverage and propellant-free spritzes every time.
AUTOMATIC WHISK
Frothing milk for a latte or mixing a quick salad dressing takes no time at all with a handheld frother. Rechargeable or batterypowered, you’ll use it in many ways.
These are essential for citrus zest, Parmesan cheese or chocolate to add dimension to your creations. Any small microplane will do, even one from the hardware store.
IMMERSION BLENDER
These are convenient, especially for soups, gravies and sauces. No need for a traditional blender. Find one that’s powerful but slim for storage.
Some say a Dutch oven is the only pot you need — it sears, roasts, stews and even bakes bread. Choose a sturdy brand built like a tank to withstand continued use, and grab a pretty color while you’re at it.
INSTANT-READ THERMOMETER
Get quick, accurate results while cooking meat with an instant-read thermometer. It’s indispensable.
BENCH SCRAPER
This flat metal gadget acts as a scoop instead of using the side of your knife. Portion dough, move chopped veggies, cut lasagna and clean your workspace easily.
CITRUS JUICER
Handheld and effective, it literally turns your limes and lemons inside out to get more juice. Sure, you can keep squeezing by hand, but why?
These small blenders, like the Nutribullet brand, come in handy for blending small-batch soups, smoothies, hummus, sauces and more.

If you’re going to have statement light fixtures, statement rugs or statement furniture pieces, why not statement doorknobs? They may not drip with crystals or fringe or be oversized (which would reduce their functionality), but they send their own message about the style and sensibility of those who live in the home. Their compatibility or even collision with the doors they adorn and the surrounding décor communicates the owners’ taste and outlook on their residence and those they invite inside. Whether they’re traditional round knobs or more modernistic door handles, each choice comes with its own brand of elegance that can further elevate a luxury home. In most cases it’s best to use similar if not identical knobs or handles throughout your home, but mixing styles can work, if more ornate hardware is being used in a few key areas.
The first patented doorknob and locking system didn’t come in the U.S. until 1878, when it was awarded to African-American inventor Osborn Dorsey. It succeeded from the beginning, with the Industrial Revolution making them easier to obtain for both practical and decorative purposes. Brass quickly became the dominant material, and many were cast with designs that told a story of their own.
Today manufacturers still produce vintage-styled doorknobs with designs incorporating etched scenes, textured knobs like the “beehive” styled with ridges and many other elements that give them ornamental as well as practical value. You can also opt for a plain brass knob for an understated yet classic touch. Doorknobs also fit nicely into modern minimalist homes, especially if they have a matte or brushed nickel finish to tone down any glare that comes off the metal.
Door handles work like levers and can be pushed or pulled to open or close a door. The first prototypes of these handles surfaced around 1930 and slowly gained steam before gaining recognition for their ease of use for people who have trouble grasping a doorknob. They’re handy for when your hands are full and all you have is an arm or elbow for leverage. They also can be easier for young children and pets to operate (which can be good or bad).
These are an ideal fit for most modern-styled homes with their sleek, L-shaped forms. They can have different designs and textures — round or squared off, tapered at the ends or blocky and blunt. As long as they have clean lines, they can be nearly any shape, though a straight line can work the best. Door handles also work for more traditional, even maximalist homes with a few more embellishments, like scrolling or molding.
s spring unfolds across Arizona, it’s time to infuse your backyard with life and color. Whether you’re in Prescott’s cool highlands, Sedona’s red rock paradise or Flagstaff’s alpine charm, selecting the right flowers and plants is key to creating an outdoor sanctuary.
Prescott’s mild spring temperatures and higher elevation make it a gardener’s haven. Here, embrace hardy perennials and native species that thrive in the region’s climate. Think cheerful black-eyed Susans, delicate purple coneflowers and lavender for a soothing aroma and pollinator appeal.
To add a touch of elegance, consider roses like the hybrid tea or shrub varieties, which flourish in Prescott’s temperate conditions. For greenery, junipers and manzanitas provide year-round structure, while flowering shrubs like lilacs and forsythia explode with seasonal beauty. The trick is to balance droughttolerant plants with those needing minimal maintenance, allowing you to enjoy your garden without constant upkeep.
Sedona’s iconic red rock backdrop deserves equally stunning plant life. Embrace the desert’s resilience with succulents like agave and echeveria, paired with splashes of color from desert marigolds or firecracker penstemons. These native plants are suited to Sedona’s arid conditions, requiring little water and thriving in the abundant sunlight.
For an extra touch, consider bougainvillea or lantana for cascading blossoms that bring a tropical vibe to your desert retreat. Incorporate architectural cacti like golden barrels or towering saguaros for a striking contrast, turning your backyard into an artful oasis.
Flagstaff’s cooler climate and frequent snowfall make it ideal for a lush, mountain-inspired garden. Springtime favorites like pansies and snapdragons provide bursts of color, while evergreens like Colorado blue spruce or dwarf pine lend year-round appeal. Peonies and columbines thrive here, offering charm and resilience in the face of the region’s cooler nights. For a functional and picturesque touch, create a wildflower meadow with lupines, Indian paintbrush and sunflowers. Flagstaff’s alpine soil supports an array of blooms that attract bees and butterflies.
Trends come and go, but vintage clocks are a classic decorating piece that stand the test of time. The beauty lies in their ability to be both functional and decorative.
From art deco to ornate, there are many styles. Use a wall clock to fill space and add visual interest or add a mantle clock for some old world charm.
You also can fashion a curated gallery wall filled with a collection of vintage clocks for dynamic visual impact. Let each clock tell a story of different eras.
One of the advantages of choosing vintage clocks for modern interiors is their versatility. Whether you’ve used industrial, minimalist or cozy farmhouse designs in your home, there’s a vintage clock for it.
Consider grandfather clocks, with warm wood tones and classic appeal. These are best as a focal point in large rooms with high ceilings or large foyers.
Mantel clocks, also called table or shelf clocks, can be placed on a fireplace mantel or side table. Antique French mantel clocks are usually ornate and decorative, typically made of marble, porcelain or bronze.
Double-sided station clocks, usually found in railway stations, offer a unique, modern, industrial vibe.
And don’t just add vintage clocks to your living room. Kitchens, bedrooms and even bathrooms get style and flair by adding a vintage clock or two.
In modern home design, where clean lines and open spaces are
often highlighted, vintage clocks can operate as focal points.
For instance, for a contemporary living room with neutral tones and streamlined furniture, a large vintage wall clock easily becomes the centerpiece above a minimalist fireplace. You’ve now fashioned a visually stunning and harmonious look with the contrast of old and new.
Vintage clocks are also investments. They are still around after many years, making them a practical choice for those interested in reusing items.
In a world inundated with massproduced goods, these clocks are symbols of artistry and detail.
For a modern office, add a midcentury sunburst clock. Its bold design and radiating brass arms can add a retro spirit and a vibrant focal point.
For a modern-yet-vintage look with pops of bright color, hang a classic colorful Vitra sunburst clock or Nelson ball clock in your kitchen.
If you’re looking for modern glam, choose an antique, art deco wall clock with geometric patterns. Bring in the opulence of the 1920s in a modern dining room. Add a glass dining table and velvet upholstered chairs in jewel tones to complete the look.
No matter what type of vintage clock you choose, they can serve various purposes. When considering a vintage clock as a focal point, the key is to find one with visual interest that complements your style.
