Welcome from

Mayor Phil Goode

I am pleased to welcome you to Prescott, a city steeped in history, surrounded by beautiful vistas at every turn, and filled with great things to see and do.

Prescott is an ideal place for those seeking a historic, charming community surrounded by natural beauty, infused with culture and higher education resources.

I would like to share a few facts you may not know about Prescott.

Our rich history includes the establishment in 1864 as the Territorial Capital of Arizona. Prescott remains the Yavapai County Seat and the financial center for the county. Prescott is home to over 400 homes and buildings on the National Historic Register.

Nestled at an elevation of about a mile above sea level, Prescott sits among a large stand of ponderosas. Prescott’s weather provides an average year-round temperature of 70 degrees, with four beautiful and distinct seasons, and breathtaking landscapes complete with granite mountains, lakes, streams and rolling meadows filled with wildlife. There are hundreds of miles of multiuse trails, golf, fishing, kayaking and family attractions.

Our historic downtown surrounds the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza, and is filled with unique locally owned boutiques, shops and restaurants.

The famous Whiskey Row features watering holes and establishments that date back to the 1800s. Prescott is also known for the World’s Oldest Rodeo®, first performed in 1888. A variety of special events occur throughout the year including summer concerts, art fairs, parades, car shows and many more.

Prescott also is home to museums, performing arts venues, including the historic Elks Opera House, and even a planetarium. Prescott offers western culture mixed with a love of the outdoors.

Prescott is easily accessible to Phoenix, Flagstaff, Sedona and the Grand Canyon. The Prescott Regional Airport connects to the world with daily flights to Los Angeles and Denver.

Education is an important aspect of life in Prescott. Our public and private charter schools offer many excellent choices for your child’s education. Our City is home to four institutes of higher learning, including the internationally acclaimed Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

We are proud of our community, and we hope you will find Prescott to be as charming and beautiful as we do. On behalf of the City of Prescott, our elected officials and staff, welcome to Prescott!

Fun & Events

It’s pretty hard to find a place where you can experience all four seasons without at least one of them getting out of hand, but Prescott is such a place! Summers are warm and welcoming, winters are chilly with occasional snowstorms that don’t keep you locked inside for months.

We get to explore the outdoors year-round and take part in iconic community events throughout the year. These are two of the biggest:

“ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY” www.arizonachristmascity.com

Prescott has held this official designation since 1989, earning it with the dazzling annual light display at Courthouse Plaza and the spirit infused throughout the community during the holiday season.

The festive Courthouse Lighting is held on December’s first Saturday following a joyous Christmas parade with more than 100 entries. The fun spreads throughout town with more celebrations at Sharlot Hall Museum, Heritage Park Zoo, Acker Night throughout downtown and many more venues. And don’t forget about the annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop on Whiskey Row!

Bucking broncs, steers and cowboys have dazzled audiences over the Fourth of July weekend for 138 years and are the centerpiece of a citywide celebration. Prescott is known for its history and culture stemming from this historical event that not only brings professional rodeo but also Arizona’s second-largest parade in downtown Prescott, a rodeo dance, a kiddie parade and more events that draw people from throughout the world.

Known locally and nationally for having the state’s best and most extensive opportunities for hiking, biking, boating and all outdoor activities, the Prescott area has five area lakes, 16 city parks and more than 470 miles of well-maintained and developed trails.

PARKS

A.C. Williams Granite Creek Park, just north of downtown, is at the heart of the city and has tons of green space, a playground, splash pad, picnic areas and more.

Heritage Park, just north of Willow Lake, boasts the city’s zoo along with baseball fields, a soccer field and connectivity to trails threading throughout the Granite Dells area.

Pioneer Park and Kuebler Sports Complex on the northwest side of the city offer excellent outdoor recreation possibilities ranging from hiking/running trails to soccer, football, baseball and pickleball facilities, including Arizona Diamondbacks-Brad Ziegler Field.

LAKES

Prescott’s Watson Lake and Willow Lake are set next to each other among the rock walls and formations of the stunning Granite Dells. The lakes, the parks surrounding them and an adjacent riparian area have been designated an Important Bird Area by Audubon.

Goldwater Lake is in lush pine forests surrounded by rugged mountain areas just south of the city. Kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals are available for all three at www.prescottoutdoors.com

Lake and Granite Basin Lake also are near Prescott within Prescott National Forest. You can fish, kayak, canoe and picnic at both, and Lynx, Granite and Willow lakes have camping sites.

It’s a playground for anyone who likes to walk, hike, mountain bike, ride horses, off-road, climb rocks, fish, kayak, watch birds and other wildlife, geocache, forage or do almost anything else — some activities require permits or fees. Special places with memories to be made can be found around every rock, tree or cactus under the rich diversity of vistas provided by these areas. Don’t miss highlights include:

5 Easy Trails for Kicking Off your New Hiking Habit

As spring approaches and the weather gradually warms, many people who put their hiking on ice for winter begin venturing out again — especially in Greater Prescott.

Others who’ve never really gotten onto this path resolve that this will be the year they finally make this healthy, invigorating hobby part of their lives. Many of these people will have had some trekking experience in their history, while others have little to none.

Luckily our area has a huge selection of trails to choose from. Read on to learn about some of the best choices for beginning hikers.

ASPEN CREEK TRAIL

Prescott National Forest 6.4 miles round trip

For those looking for a somewhat more challenging hike, this trail’s first mile climbs up and over a ridge for a great cardio workout.

It follows a short section of Aspen Creek and climbs up the base of Mt. Francis through impressive stands of ponderosa and Gambel oak, the latter of which provides a healthy amount of fall foliage for those who come to this year-round trail at the right time. There are no aspens to be found, unfortunately.

BALANCING ROCK TRAIL

Granite Mountain Recreation Area

6.4 miles round trip

A gently rolling journey through the foothills below Granite Mountain through stands of ponderosa and oak that are majestic whether lushly green in the summer, red and gold in the autumn or dressed in sleeves of snow in the winter.

This family-friendly path also passes spectacular and mindboggling granite formations, including several it could have been named after.

GREENWAYS TRAIL SYSTEM

City of Prescott

2.5 miles one way

These trails follow Miller Creek from the rodeo grounds through downtown into A.C. Williams Granite Creek Park, with another fork on the banks of Granite Creek between the park and Mile High Middle School. The shaded surfaces are mostly flat with the gradual sloping you find throughout the neighborhood.

Cyclists also frequent these paths, which the City of Prescott plans to expand in the future.

WATSON WOODS TRAILS/ LOWER GRANITE CREEK

DISCOVERY TRAIL

City of Prescott

2.3 miles one way

The trails threading through Watson Woods, a restored riparian area along Granite Creek, provides varied experiences of these lush wetlands to which migratory birds flock. They connect to the Granite Creek Discovery Trail, which continues along the southwest bank of iconic Watson Lake to its park’s main parking area.

This short hike offers a cross section of some of the most gorgeous scenery Prescott offers.

LYNX LAKE LOOP

Lynx Lake Recreation Area

2.4 miles round trip

The most centrally located of Greater Prescott’s lakes is ringed by a halfpaved, half-dirt trail rated as “easy.” The trail along the western shore is paved and wheelchair-accessible, while the eastern shore sports a narrow dirt path with some rocky spots, but most hikers will find it easy to manage.

Bikes and horses are not permitted, so those on foot don’t have to worry about clearing the way for faster traffic.

Trails and Tails

Dogtastic trails will make every hike a breeze for you and your beastie.

If you’re a dog owner in Greater Prescott who hikes, it might seem a no-brainer to take your best pal along with you, combining their daily walk with your favorite cardio nature workout. And it almost is.

But not all trails are as suitable for our canines as they are for people. Granite or rocky surfaces can be too hot or slick for their tender paws, and gorgeous meadows can be rife with burrs and bugs. You need to also consider your pup’s discipline, behavior and excitability, and whether avoiding high-use trails might be best for everyone involved.

All that said, there are miles and miles of trails where you and your dog can revel in nature and healthy movement together, safely. Here are a few to get you started.

Peavine Trail , trailhead on Sundog Ranch Road next to Yavapai Humane Society — Officially known as the Prescott Peavine National Recreation Trail, this popular path follows a former Santa Fe Railroad bed 6 miles north to a trailhead at State Route 89A; its dirt path is wide enough to accommodate the plentiful hiking and biking traffic it attracts. It meets the Iron King Trail into Prescott Valley and the Lakeshore and Flume trails along Watson Lake.

Acker Park , 421 S. Virginia St. — Park has 3.24 miles of loop trails that include views across the south side of Prescott and over to Thumb Butte, a series of bluebird nesting boxes with shade from juniper and other trees. User reviews warn it can be very muddy on winter mornings, particularly after snowfall.

Watson Woods Trails , 1801 AZ-89 — Prescott’s largest riparian preserve at the south end of Watson Lake has a 2-mile loop trail that

threads through cottonwoods, past water burbling over rocks in Granite Creek and awesome views of the Granite Dells. This trail is narrow in spots, so be sure you have a dog who knows how to make room for others. Connects the Peavine and Discovery trails.

Health & Medical Care

Health care is the leading industry for growth in Arizona in terms of the number and quality of jobs, says Lee McPheters, a research professor of economics at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

Yavapai County ranks first out of Arizona’s 15 counties for healthy behaviors, and thanks to a strong network of health care partners and collaborators, the community is poised to maintain its position. Nearly 85% of people in the community report being able to see a doctor when needed, according to a 2022 Yavapai County Community Health Services report.

MEDICAL CHOICES EXPANDING

Yavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) and Dignity Health completed their affiliation in 2020, uniting two strong health care systems committed to creating healthier communities by providing accessible, affordable and innovative health services.

Since then more new and innovative medical centers and practices have continued to flock to Greater Prescott. Exceptional Community Hospital will soon make its debut in Yavapai Hills, while Arizona Oncology has expanded to a larger facility. Dignity Health YRMC is continually adding services and facilities to its portfolio, including a new primary care practice and expanded rehab center. There are many more additions to come.

The medical directory in the pages that follow offers one of the most comprehensive guides to the diverse health care choices residents and visitors have in western Yavapai County.

STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL CLARITY & FOCUS?

WHAT IS

NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING?

Neurofeedback training, also known as EEG biofeedback, is a cutting-edge technique that optimizes brain function. It is a non-invasive, drug-free approach that helps individuals enhance their cognitive abilities, emotional well-being, and overall brain health.

Prescott’s renowned livability has fueled strong growth over recent decades, with the population expanding from 25,000 in 1990 to more than 47,000 today. The diverse selection of housing choices in and around the city reflect the broad appeal of its natural beauty, mild climate, strong economy and myriad other strengths.

You can live in a log cabin, Victorian mansion, Craftsman classic, ranch home, mission- or Tuscan-style charmer, affordable manufactured home or anything else you’ve been dreaming of. Other options include apartments, condominiums and rental homes.

Whether you’re married or single, living with young children or older relatives, there are many floor plans to suit your lifestyle and needs. Masterplanned communities offer nearly unlimited amenities, including golf courses and clubhouses, while other areas have more laid-back living, and many have a country atmosphere.

Prescott neighborhoods are as varied as its homes, but all offer spectacular views and access to parks, shopping, schools, entertainment and activities held indoors and out. Small-town friendliness and independence leads to collaboration and a sense of community among neighbors.

Home prices range from $200,000 to more than $2 million. Whether you’re building a new home, shopping for an existing one or leasing your next home, there’s a real estate broker or agent who can help you navigate the market conditions and stumble onto your destiny.

You can begin your journey home by searching the Prescott Chamber of Commerce’s member directory for qualified, talented professionals at web.prescott.org/Real-EstateConstruction

Low Cost of Doing Business

Arizona offers one of the lowest costs of doing business in the United States, primarily because of low taxes and small state government. While the national average of per-capita income going to taxes is 9.9%, here the number is 8.4%.

GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY

Considering the size of the population, the state government is small. Arizona has the country’s second-lowest number of state and local government employees per 10,000 residents, according to the 2024 edition of the Rich States, Poor States study by the American Legislative Exchange Council. The same survey ranks Arizona No. 4 for business performance and No. 3 for business outlook.

In addition, Arizona’s taxes on property and business income remain low compared to the rest of the country. The Tax Foundation rated Arizona's tax climate the 14th best in the U.S. in 2024.

Property taxes here are the 11th lowest in the U.S., and unemployment insurance tax is the 10th lowest. Average costs for workers compensation are another advantage, with Arizona ranked 8th lowest nationwide.

It also was established as the county seat of Yavapai County, one of four original counties. Although the capital moved to Tucson in 1867, it returned to Prescott at the end of 1877 and remained until it was moved permanently to Phoenix in 1889.

On Dec. 31, 1886, the Arizona Central Railway connected Prescott with the Atlantic and Pacific. By 1895 the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railroad (also known as the Peavine) connected Prescott’s mining area with the Southern Pacific line. By 1900, established residences were clearly reflecting

Victorian-era architectural styles. Commercial development was altered dramatically when a disastrous fire on July 14, 1900 destroyed four and a half blocks downtown. Citizens viewed the event as a chance to replace the old wooden buildings with more permanent concrete, brick and stone buildings.

The Prescott Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1910 to promote the area for its healthful climate as Arizona experienced an increase in tourism. The copper mining industry also supported area growth in the early 20th century because of the demands of World War I.

The Depression was hard on the state and local economy, but local and federal assistance programs were well organized in Prescott

during the late 1930s. After World War II there was a significant increase in both residential and commercial building reflecting the nationwide boom in growth and home ownership.

Once you’ve had some amazing Prescott adventures you can travel just beyond your new hometown and find the perfect day’s fun for your family inside the many museums, shops and restaurants or outside on trails, lakes and Jeep tours within a few hours’ drive. Whether you crave cool pines or desert warmth, there is a day trip for you!

CAREFREE/CAVE CREEK

These towns just north of Phoenix and Scottsdale offer a more laid-back vibe, one via high-end resorts and the other Old West quirks. Take a horseback trail ride in the stunning Sonoran Desert, go antiquing along Cave Creek Road and browse galleries and boutiques in Carefree.

CAMP VERDE/COTTONWOOD

Spend the day learning about the cliff-dwelling Sinagua culture and their crowning architectural achievement at Montezuma Castle National Monument, visiting a wideranging menagerie at Out of Africa Wildlife Park or enjoying the scenery and fine wines at 10 wineries and tasting rooms along the Verde Valley Wine Trail.

FLAGSTAFF

Northern Arizona’s largest city is at the foot of its highest peak, Mount Humphries, and in the midst of natural splendor to explore at Walnut Canyon and year-round at the Arizona Snow Bowl. Lowell Observatory lets you reach for the stars, and you can see the massive mark left when a celestial object collided with Earth at nearby Meteor Crater.

GRAND CANYON

Hiking trails, shopping, gorgeous hotels and cabins, restaurants and more are awaiting the visitor to the Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Trailheads for Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails are near the village. Tour more of the North Rim to see even more unbeatable views.

NAVAJO NATION

The largest Indian reservation in the U.S. includes some of the most iconic scenery in the West. Explore the stunning red cliffs and ancient ruins of Canyon de Chelly National Monument and the narrow but enchanting “slots” of Antelope Canyon.

PAYSON

“The Heart of Arizona” has rodeos, swimming, hiking, fishing and camping on the edge of the Mogollon Rim. The historic downtown offers dining and shopping. Tonto Natural Bridge offers hiking trails, the natural bridge and the park’s cavern. Fossil hunting, Indian ruins and the Zane Grey Cabin will keep the history buff enthralled.

SCOTTSDALE

This high-end neighbor of Phoenix has the Valley of the Sun’s premier shopping and dining opportunities in its Old Town and at Scottsdale Fashion Square, one of the nation’s largest malls. Yavapai Humane Society Welcomes You and your Furry Family Members to Prescott!

Welcome to Prescott, a picturesque haven nestled in the heart of Arizona’s high country, where the charming blend of history, nature and warm hospitality beckons both twolegged and four-legged visitors alike.

Whether you’re a new resident or a potential resident, Prescott opens its arms to you and your furry companions, inviting you to explore its vibrant community, stunning landscapes and dog-friendly delights. From scenic trails to pet-friendly patios, this city offers a wealth of experiences that make it a paw-sitively perfect destination for dog lovers and adventurers alike.

So, leash up your best friend and embark on an unforgettable journey through Prescott’s welcoming streets, where the joy of adventure knows no bounds.

Prior to heading out on any outings with your furry companion, though, make sure your veterinarian has given your pup a clean bill of health. This will help prevent injuries and any potential exercise-related problems.

Prescott boasts an elevation exceeding 5,000 feet, and just as it takes us humans some time to acclimate, your dog also will need an adjustment period. We are also surrounded by Prescott National Forest, so be aware of the different wildlife that inhabit our area and sometimes venture into neighborhoods.

Additionally, our region experiences extreme weather conditions, including scorching summers and snowy winters. Be

sure to check the temperature and weather forecast before venturing out, and keep in mind that the weather can change quite suddenly, so keep an eye on the sky!

Carrying your cellphone is advisable in case you encounter any unforeseen challenges during your outing.

Giving your furry friend the right dose of physical fun is a key ingredient in keeping their muscles and joints in tip-top shape, maintaining a healthy weight and letting out all that pent-up energy.

Start the adventure with a leisurely neighborhood walk, and then level up to longer, more exciting hikes. Just like us humans, you wouldn’t want to leap straight into a 3-mile hike without a warmup. So, amp up your daily walks bit by bit, and toss in a hill or two for that extra zest and zing!

When you’re ready to hit one of our many pet-friendly trails, we suggest the Watson Woods Trail that starts at Rosser Street and goes to Watson Lake. It’s a nice 3½ mile roundtrip hike that is pretty flat and a good starting point for beginners.

From there, you can venture out to other trails and eventually to some that challenge you both a bit more. Lynx Lake Loop is a beautiful 2½ mile hike that is relatively easy. The Constellation Loop comes in at about the same length and also is easy but often quite busy. Goldwater Lakes Trail No. 396 is an 8-mile hike out and

back, which has nice benches along the way to take a break when needed.

Remember to bring potty bags, water for both of you, and be sure to keep an eye on your dog(s) to make sure they are not becoming overheated or exhausted. And remember that while it’s tempting to let your dog off its leash, it is Arizona law that your dog remains on a leash that is a maximum of 6-feet long. This is for the safety of not only your dog, but others you may come across.

Having an adventure with your dog in Prescott is a win-win! You both soak up the beauty, get exercise and strengthen your bond. Plus, it’s a paw-some chance to mingle with other pups and peeps!

So, grab that leash and your playful pooch and hit the trail for an awesome time together! It’ll put smiles on both your faces!

And if you’re on the hunt for a new furry adventure buddy, visit our website at yavapaihumane.org where you can see all the awesome animals just waiting for you. Give us a call at 928.445.2666 to fetch more information or to set up an appointment.
