PULSE

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Merri and Steve
playing

Merri McKee & Steve Miller

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?

Merri: Steve and I met a few years ago after I moved here but started playing music together at some open mics a while later after we realized we both enjoyed the complexity and beauty of harmony.

Positive response from audiences encouraged us.

Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play? What about them inspires you?

Steve: I was raised on old time country, gospel and bluegrass music, but I loved Elvis.

I started singing harmony with my mom when I was about 6. She taught me how to how play guitar, actually just a few guitar chords, when I was 7. The first song I ever played was Folsom Prison, and mom loved it.

The harmonies or/and the lyrics always attract me and inspire me, no matter the genre. If it’s not my type of music I reshape it a bit.

Merri: I have a similar background with a mother who really encouraged my sisters and me to sing and to get accomplished on at least piano. I convinced her to let me learn guitar too and then started singing in the elementary school choir. All three musical pursuits continued throughout my college

years and influenced me into getting college educated in voice studies, visual arts and performance, with teaching credentials, so I could teach what I loved doing.

Like Steve, the music we do is based on what we find interesting either in harmonic structure, melody or maybe lyrics. Our set lists can combine country, folk, old rock or jazz or even Celtic. It is the way a song can be interpreted between us that keeps it in our song list.

Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?

Steve: First, a love of what you’re doing. It takes a certain amount of originality, and whatever you’re playing has to come from the heart and a desire to connect with your audience.

Merri: I agree that it is so important to believe in the tunes you are playing; the message or maybe just the fun of the words and tune for bringing a smile to the audience.

Playing music can’t be just about ourselves.

Prescott NOW: What’s the smallest audience you’ve ever played for; the biggest?

Merri McKee & Steve Miller: Smallest probably five people, largest around 1,500 maybe 2,000 plus. We’ve both played

large shows and showrooms plus outdoor events in our pasts.

Prescott NOW : Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?

Steve: That’s easy! Life experience and moments of clarity of myself and others.

Merri: I spend a lot of time hiking or wandering away from towns. Those quiet places are needed for listening to myself.

Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?

Steve: Even though I lived in Phoenix for 35 years, I always loved Prescott.

When I moved to Camp Verde I came more often, but it was Frank and Doug Ping and Sunday open mics at the Thumb Butte Distillery that made me fall in love with the musical community.

Merri: I first came to Prescott with family. This was a favorite vacation area. I moved here almost 20 years ago and played some music, mostly Celtic, with some of the members of the current Salt of the Earth band.

I had to leave after that year but kept visiting and then moved back for residency about five years ago. I, too, found the open mics a great way to meet other musicians.

Great Food. DRINKS. Live Music.

A Peek at February’s 4th Friday Art Walk

On Feb. 28, Prescott’s 4th Friday Art Walk once again welcomed art enthusiasts to explore 16 downtown galleries showcasing local and nationally acclaimed artists. These galleries extended their monthly hours and offered exhibits, artist receptions and signature events.

The next Art Walk is March 28.

Since its founding in 2004, the 4th Friday Art Walk has been a celebrated evening for Prescott’s visual arts community. Participating galleries host evening events beginning at 5 p.m. each month. Visitors can pick up gallery guides at participating locations, hotel brochure racks and the Prescott Chamber of Commerce.

The two featured galleries for February’s Art Walk were ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery and the Natural History Institute Gallery.

‘Tis Art Center and Gallery, at 105 S. Cortez St., featured the work of Jenny T. Arts. A lifelong maker and appreciator of art, Jenny pursued her passion academically by obtaining a degree in art education.

This foundation allowed her to explore various artistic avenues while nurturing her creativity. Throughout her career, she has balanced motherhood with her creative pursuits, establishing herself as an artist, jewelry maker and art teacher.

At the Natural History Institute Gallery, at 126 N. Marina St., visitors enjoyed an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Arizona artists Donna Larson and Sheila Kollasch that explored the natural history elements and literature of our Southwest region over many years.

Making your Home Firewise: Simple Steps for Safety

As wildfires rage across California year after year, the effects are felt beyond its borders. For homeowners, these fires have significant impact, particularly when it comes to fire insurance coverage.

Arizona homeowners may soon face challenges as insurers and legislators address growing fire risks and coverage issues.

In 2025, lawmakers and real estate professionals alike will play key roles in protecting and educating consumers regarding fire insurance.

Meanwhile, homeowners must prepare by safeguarding their homes in fire-prone areas like northern Arizona. Creating a Firewise home is a key factor in protecting your property and ensuring coverability.

A Firewise home reduces risk through preventative measures and design. Here’s how you can make your home more fire-resistant:

Create defensible space around your home

Clear dead vegetation, leaves and debris within 30 feet of your home. Trim trees and bushes to prevent fire spread, and space trees apart to reduce fire risk.

Fire-resistant building materials

When building or renovating, use fireresistant materials for roofs, siding and decks. Metal, tile and asphalt shingles are better than wood. Choose siding like stucco, brick or fiber cement. Add metal mesh to vents, chimneys and eaves to block embers.

Fire-smart landscaping

Make wise landscaping choices. Avoid flammable plants like juniper and pine; use low-growing, moist plants instead. Create fire breaks by spacing plantings. Keep grass mowed and irrigated to prevent it from drying out

and catching, and use fire-resistant mulches.

Spark arresters and ember protection

Install spark arresters on chimneys to prevent flying embers from escaping, which could ignite nearby trees or bushes. Similarly, ember-resistant vents can be used to stop hot embers from entering your attic or crawl spaces.

Have a fire emergency plan

While prevention is vital, preparation is just as important. Develop an emergency plan that includes evacuation routes and a designated meeting place. Keep firefighting tools such as hoses, buckets and shovels easily accessible.

A REALTOR® can provide resources and guidance not only when you want to purchase a home, but in protecting the one you already own and love.

You can Help College Rodeo Athletes

As a sponsor for the Grand Canyon Regional Finale, you can help college rodeo athletes pursue their dreams of becoming rodeo legends. Sponsorships are available for the upcoming regional finale that will be held for the first time at Prescott Frontier Days® World’s Oldest Rodeo® grounds May 2 and May 3.

There are six levels of sponsorships, says Prescott Frontier Days General Manager Jim Dewey Brown, who has been instrumental in bringing college rodeo to Prescott.

As a Grand View $10,000 sponsor, you receive announcer recognition, social media recognition, four arena-wrap logos, two full-page program ads, logo placement on the ads, a Grand Entry flag, cornhole team entry for two teams, 10 grandstand tickets for each performance, and one full box seating for each performance (eight seats).

Other sponsorship levels include Bright Angel ($7,500), Phantom Ranch ($5,000), Yavapai ($2,500), Watchtower ($1,000) and Kaibab ($500).

The deadline to submit the sponsorship application is April 15.

Many student athletes who compete in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association become leaders within the rodeo and western industry, and help ensure the future of rodeo and the western way of life.

The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, a nonprofit organization, sanctions this event which allows over 3,000 college rodeo athletes to earn an education while still having the opportunity to compete in their respective rodeo events.

The Grand Canyon Region is made up of eight colleges across Arizona and New Mexico that are National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association members. Contestants compete against one another during the fall at various rodeos across both states to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming.

To be part of these sponsorship opportunities, contact Katie Ramos and/or Summer Logan at the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Office, 928.445.3103 or email gcregional@worldsoldestrodeo.com

The Grand Canyon Regional Finale will be held at the rodeo grounds with 6 p.m. performances nightly. You’ll see these exceptional young athletes perform bare back, saddle bronc, breakaway roping, barrel racing, tie down, bull riding, goat tying, team roping steer wrestling and mini bull riding.

Tickets are available at www.rodeoticket.com/ rodeos/worlds-oldest-rodeo-grand-canyon-regionalfinale/2025/tickets . Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years and younger. Vendors, various food options and a beer garden will also be available.

Acclaimed Folk/Rock Duo Launched YC 2025 Cabaret

The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center launched the second half of its 2024-25 Cabaret Series with what it does best: Close contact with musicians who possess virtuoso talent and have a whole lot to say.

The upbeat folk duo Ryanhood performed Jan. 31 on Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus.

Ryanhood — individually, lead guitarist Ryan David Green and guitarist/lyricist Cameron Hood — are a pair of crowdpleasing Tucson musicians who found success taking the long

way around. The duo got their first break as street performers at Boston’s Quincy Market, where a college booking agent warmed to their clever songwriting and intricate harmonies.

He put them on the college touring scene, where Campus Activities Magazine named them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.”

Over the past decade, Ryanhood has performed more than a thousand shows in 47 U.S. states.

Their latest album, Under the Leaves , resembles their live performances: driven by strong guitar-driven music with a feel that is at turns energetic, hopeful and quietly moving.

The two musicians still live in their hometown of Tucson, where they have collected more than a dozen Tucson Music Awards including Best Folk Band and Best Rock Band.

More information on the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center and events is available at www.ycpac.com
