The Legacy of Women at Prescott Frontier Days ® inc – World’s Oldest Rodeo ®
Written by Donna Werking
The history of women in rodeo at Prescott Frontier Days® – World’s Oldest Rodeo® is rich with trailblazers, traditions, and transformative milestones, marking the significant roles women have played in rodeo culture from its earliest days. Known as a proving ground for the best riders, ropers, and racers, Prescott’s rodeo set the stage for female competitors to showcase their talent and courage, carving out spaces for women in a largely male-dominated sport.
Female Cowboy Pony Racers Debut
The history of women competing at Prescott Frontier Days® began in 1889 with the introduction of female cowboy pony racers. At a time when many women’s athletic activities were limited, this pioneering move opened doors, setting a precedent that women could not only participate but excel in competitive rodeo events.

1911 - 1945
Grace was the Secretary of the Frontier Days Association for 30 years widely known as "the girl who bosses 200 bronco busters". She established the Way Out West show that saved the rodeo in 1921. She codified the written rules of cowboy contests (later known as Prescott Rodeo Rules).
We had our first Female Bronc
Riders
By 1915, female bronc riders entered the scene, marking another groundbreaking moment in rodeo history. These women exhibited the same grit and determination as their male counterparts, riding bucking broncos in the arena. Although this thrilling event concluded in 1927, it established an early legacy of resilience among female riders at the rodeo.

Introduction of Rodeo Queens
The Prescott Frontier Days® Rodeo Queens program began in 1939, honoring young women who exemplified Western values, rodeo knowledge, and horsemanship. The queen competition elevated women’s visibility and involvement in the rodeo, fostering a sense of pride and tradition that has remained integral to the event’s identity.
1939
1941 The First Twin Rodeo Queens
In 1941, the rodeo made history by crowning twin sisters as the Prescott Frontier Days® Rodeo Queens. This unique event underscored the diverse ways women could represent the rodeo, highlighting family connections and community roots that continue to be celebrated today.

Through over a century of achievements, female participants in Prescott Frontier Days® have not only competed but have become icons, ambassadors, and symbols of Western heritage and resilience. Their contributions are celebrated and woven into the fabric of the rodeo’s longstanding history.

Grammy-Winning Artist Brought His Singular Sound to YC
submitted by
Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group performed a night of country, swing, folk and blues March 8 at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center on Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus.
Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic artists.
His 14 award-winning albums and critically acclaimed live shows highlight more than the
Texas legend’s talent. They also illustrate the diversity of his musical influences. Lovett’s work fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner, making him one of popular music’s most compelling and captivating performers.
Lyle Lovett’s four Grammy awards — Best Country Album ( The Road to Ensenada , 1996); Best Country Duo/Group with Vocals
( Blues for Dixie with Asleep at the Wheel, 1994); Best Pop Vocal Collaboration ( Funny How Time Slips Away with Al Green, 1994); and Best Country Male Vocalist (1989) — illustrate the diversity of his skills and the popularity of his work.
He has won a host of other awards and accolades, including the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award and was named Texas State Musician.

For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
Groove Dawgs: Groove Dawgs have been playing in Prescott for about five years. Nick Malouff on guitar, keys and vocals; Cliff Laidlaw on drums and vocals; and Rob Israel on bass.
Prescott NOW: What’s the story behind your band’s name?
Groove Dawgs: Led Zeppelin was taken so we looked at what we do best. We like to bring a unique style to the tunes we play. We especially work on the groove. Dawgs? It has a gritty connotation, which has a nice contrast to Groove.
Prescott NOW: How do you connect with your audience during a show?
Groove Dawgs: We spend a lot of time deciding on what tunes to play live. What do people like? Can you dance to it? When we try a new tune and it connects with our audience, it’s a keeper.
Prescott NOW: How would you describe your sound?
Groove Dawgs: We want to give our audience the best experience soundwise. We especially work on our arrangements, vocals and harmonies.
As we say at our shows, we like to play tunes nobody else plays. That doesn’t mean we play some obscure tunes no one has heard of but those gems that we grew up listening to and for some reason aren’t being played much. As Jerry Garcia said, “Play as if your life depends on it.”
Our audience tells us how much they appreciate our selection of music. I guess we’re doing something right.
Prescott NOW : What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Groove Dawgs: Playing downtown one night a Whiskey River Tavern when we got rained out to a packed crowd. Then all the power in downtown Prescott went out. We had nothing to do with that, honest.
Prescott NOW: What advice would you give your younger self?
Groove Dawgs: Find a way to go into the future and check out this
thing called YouTube. It will save you years of practicing.
Prescott NOW: What motivates your band?
Groove D awgs: We are primarily a live band. We get our energy from the crowd, and hopefully we give that same energy back. There’s nothing better than playing live to a Prescott crowd.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
Groove D awgs: Nick was brought to Prescott by his parents. Cliff escaped from LA about six years ago. Rob came here by car in 1992.

Storied Ensemble Sizzled on YC Prescott Campus
The Hot Club of San Francisco brought sterling guitar playing and the Parisian 1930s jazz atmosphere to the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center on the Yavapai College Prescott Campus in February.
Recognized as “one of the first American gypsy jazz bands,” The Hot Club of San Francisco recreates jazz in the style of immortal guitarist Django Reinhardt, who blended his own virtuosity with the
tapestry of ethnic influences and musical styles that converged in 1930s Paris.
Led by guitarist/songwriter Paul Mehling, The Hot Club of San Francisco combined violin, bass and guitars for a unique, indelible sound during their performance.
For more than 35 years, this group has been experimenting with the musical tradition of Django Reinhardt and developing their own style of
Gypsy Jazz. The current Club includes Mehling, violinist Evan Price, rhythm guitarists Jordan Samuels and Nelson Hutchison, and bassist Dexter Williams. Their work conjured the feel of smoky Paris nightclubs and the refined lounge of the famous Hotel Ritz.
To honor The Hot Club of San Francisco , the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center hosted a pre-show costume contest.

CASA SANCHEZ OWNER
STRIVES FOR AUTHENTICITY
submitted by Casa Sanchez, photos courtesy of Casa Sanchez
Casa Sanchez was established in 1989 under the name of Pancho’s Place and has become one of the oldest Mexican restaurants in Prescott. In 2002 Alejandro Garcia acquired the restaurant from his uncle, and by 2003 he changed its name to what is currently known as Casa Sanchez. Since, Alejandro has made it his goal to nourish and bring forward authentic flavors and traditions to every dish influenced by his hometown from the state of Jalisco, Mexico.
In November 2023, Casa Sanchez faced an overall building remodel from the outside to the inside with the vision of elevating their
guests’ experience to a new level. Aiming to immerse them straight into Mexico, they have imported all their art pieces, booths and tables directly from Jalisco.
Garcia is and will continue to commit to improving his guests’ experience.
The restaurant has gained a loyal following thanks to its attention to detail and commitment to providing the best Mexican cuisine in the area. Whether it’s a casual family dinner or a special celebration, Casa Sanchez continues to be a place where guests feel at home while enjoying authentic dishes that highlight the rich culture and heritage of Mexico.

How REALTORS® Support Fair Housing
submitted by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®
Every April, REALTORS® commemorate the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and reflect on the historical accomplishments that have been made by celebrating Fair Housing Month.
Fair housing laws are designed to ensure that every homebuyer and homeowner has an equal opportunity in the housing market, regardless of their background. While these laws are often associated with rental properties and tenant rights, they play a crucial role in protecting those looking to purchase or maintain a home.
Per the FHA, buyers cannot be discriminated against based on race, national origin, religion, sex, disability or familial status, and these protections extend to groups that may face unique challenges, such as single homebuyers and veterans.
Discrimination can occur in many ways for homebuyers, whether it
be a single buyer being deemed a financial risk simply because they do not have a partner with a second income, or a VA buyer being denied under the assumption of a more difficult transaction to come.
The law prohibits sellers and the corresponding institutions from discriminating against buyers based on the type of financing they use, ensuring that any buyer can fully use their benefits or independence.
REALTORS® play a key role in enforcing these protections.
Ethical REALTORS® are trained to uphold fair housing laws in practice, ensuring that buyers are treated fairly throughout the home search and purchase process. They cannot steer buyers toward or away from certain neighborhoods based on assumptions and must also ensure that property listings use inclusive language and that all clients receive the same level of service
and information, regardless of their background.
A REALTOR® who witnesses discrimination — whether in mortgage lending, home appraisals or seller decisions — can educate their clients about their rights and guide them toward filing a complaint if necessary, ensuring that even through difficulties they are acting on behalf of their clients’ best interests.
Beyond legal requirements, these protections create a more open and accessible housing market. When professionals follow fair housing principles, buyers can confidently search for homes without fear of bias.
Fair housing laws are not just about legality — they are about ensuring that everyone has the same opportunity to achieve the American dream of homeownership. Use an ethically trained REALTOR® to help you get into the home of your dreams.

You can Help College Rodeo Athletes
by
As a sponsor for the Grand Canyon Regional Finale, you can help college rodeo athletes pursue their dreams of becoming rodeo legends. Sponsorships are available for the upcoming regional finale that will be held for the first time at Prescott Frontier Days® World’s Oldest Rodeo® grounds May 2 and May 3.
There are six levels of sponsorships, says Prescott Frontier Days General Manager Jim Dewey Brown, who has been instrumental in bringing college rodeo to Prescott.
As a Grand View $10,000 sponsor, you receive announcer recognition, social media recognition, four arena-wrap logos, two full-page program ads, logo placement on the ads, a Grand Entry flag, cornhole team entry for two teams, 10 grandstand tickets for each performance, and one full box seating for each performance (eight seats).
Other sponsorship levels include Bright Angel ($7,500), Phantom Ranch ($5,000), Yavapai ($2,500), Watchtower ($1,000) and Kaibab ($500).
The deadline to submit the sponsorship application is April 15.
Many student athletes who compete in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association become leaders within the rodeo and western industry, and help ensure the future of rodeo and the western way of life.
The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, a nonprofit organization, sanctions this event which allows over 3,000 college rodeo athletes to earn an education while still having the opportunity to compete in their respective rodeo events.
The Grand Canyon Region is made up of eight colleges across Arizona and New Mexico that are National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association members. Contestants compete against one another during the fall at various rodeos across both states to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming.
To be part of these sponsorship opportunities, contact Katie Ramos and/or Summer Logan at the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Office, 928.445.3103 or email gcregional@worldsoldestrodeo.com
The Grand Canyon Regional Finale will be held at the rodeo grounds with 6 p.m. performances nightly. You’ll see these exceptional young athletes perform bare back, saddle bronc, breakaway roping, barrel racing, tie down, bull riding, goat tying, team roping steer wrestling and mini bull riding.
Tickets are available at www.rodeoticket.com/ rodeos/worlds-oldest-rodeo-grand-canyon-regionalfinale/2025/tickets . Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 years and younger. Vendors, various food options and a beer garden will also be available.

Then, Now and Always: Tell Us YOUR Library Story
This year, Prescott Public Library will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our building on Goodwin Street along with over 100 years of service to the Prescott community. Our celebration isn’t only about a location or remembering various improvements to the building, but also about celebrating what makes the Prescott Public Library great: you!
We want to know how the Prescott Public Library has played a part in your life during the past 50 (or more!) years. Perhaps you grew up with the library and enjoyed storytime or looked forward to participating in summer programs. Maybe a librarian got you hooked on a favorite book series or helped you find crucial information when you needed it.
Has the library helped you in a memorable chapter of your life? We want to hear your stories. Do you have photographs that include the library or a library program? We would love to see them. Reach out to us via email to share your story and photos at ask.librarian@prescott-az.gov . Please include your name and contact information. You can also submit your stories to the online form linked in the “news” area of our website home page.
If you aren’t sure what story to share, we have compiled some story prompts to help you get started. Please don’t feel limited to these ideas, you are welcome to share whatever you would like.
You may consider: “The library changed my life by…”
“My favorite library memory is…” “The first time I visited the library…” “What I like most about the Prescott Public Library is…”. Please note that submitting a story or photo grants permission for Prescott Public Library to share your story through any media format.
We also invite you to celebrate this milestone of service to our community by taking part in our Library Passport program for youth and adults from April 6 - May 30, where you can earn stamps in a library passport book by attending events, checking out items and more. Redeem your passport stamps for tickets to win prizes at Fest in the West, a big anniversary celebration taking place May 30 from 5 to 8 p.m.
For more information on library programs or how you can submit your story, visit or call the Ask a Librarian desk at 928.777.1526

The touring sensation that has crisscrossed the nation delighting audiences for over a decade returns this summer to the Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley July 20, with a show full of chart-topping hits from the ‘60s and ‘70s.
The tour is once again joined by The Turtles, who also act as musical hosts for the evening. Along with The Turtles will be Jay and the Americans, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Vogues and The Cowsills.
The Turtles are best known for their harmony-heavy California pop sound. With such hits as Elenore and the title of the tour Happy Together,

We are thrilled to have Gary Puckett & The Union Gap back on the Happy Together Tour. Gary’s trademark voice will be belting out his hits one more time. Fans will affectionately remember Young Girl,

The Vogues are also known for their harmony driven soaring pop sound. They had numerous Top 10 hits with singles such as Five O’clock World, You’re the One and Turn Around Look At Me.
Rounding out the bill are The Cowsills, the harmonious singing family (two brothers and a sister) that inspired the smash ‘60s hit-television show The Partridge Family. They are sure to delight with Hair and Indian Lake
