The B rand is K4
by John Mason Glen, Ph.D. for the Western Heritage Foundation
I noted last month in Prescott NOW magazine that Yavapai County is “ranch country” and spotlighted the Orme ranch, including its Orme School, as one of the finest. This month’s editorial focuses on the Kieckhefer’s K4 ranch along Walnut Creek, about 35 miles north of Prescott.
K4 is a seventh-generation family ranching operation. The family is also involved in the management of the famous Diamond A ranch with holdings in excess of 750,000 acres that reach from Seligman to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Additional real estate is held in California and southeastern Arizona.
Although the property in Yavapai County was initially homesteaded in the 1880s, the family patriarch J.W. Kieckhefer didn’t gain total control until 1941. J.W.’s son Bob began a commitment to raising prime Hereford cattle and performance quarter horses shortly thereafter. Bob also found time to serve as president of the American Quarter Horse Association in 1976 and 1994.
The focus now is on 12,000 commercial grade cattle, together with roughly 750 Angus bulls, producing the finest in gourmet beef.
In 1959, top hand and Cowboy Hall of Famer and Rodeo Hall of Famer Chuck Sheppard became manager of the K4 and shared his horse expertise there for over 40 years. Through his efforts, K4 was able to acquire a son of the famous roping, barrel racing racehorse stallion called Driftwood.
Kieckhefer’s horse, named Driftwood Ike, went on to serve as the foundation sire for many years. (My dad owned and loved a Driftwood horse for many years.)
The Kieckhefer and Sheppard families united when Chuck’s daughter, Lynda married Bob’s son John.
Their son Rick, a National Finals Rodeo qualifier in calf roping and his wife Sarah, a top barrel racer and horsewoman, now oversee the day-to-day operation.
The quality of the quarter horses produced at the K4 is showcased every September at the Legacy Ranch Horse sale in Prescott. This year, a 6-year-old red roan gelding named Dash sold for $57,500, while $69,000 was paid for another top performer, a roan mare named El Vira.
Much more information on ranching in Yavapai County, and really all things western, can be seen at the Western Heritage Center in the famous Sam Hill Hardware store on historic Whiskey Row, 156 S. Montezuma. Admission is free.

Prescott PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
The Copper State Band
Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
The Copper State Band: We’ve been around since 2019.
Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play? What about them inspires you?
The Copper State Band: We are a country western band through and through. The stories that are only found in country music are such a draw for us, and it’s really what people in this area love to listen to.
Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
The Copper State Band: Well, we pride ourselves on our professionalism. That means our punctuality, communication, our demeanor and our show itself! We take our sound very seriously, and we also do our absolute best to cooperate with every venue we play at.
We do this because good relationships build a good reputation, and a good reputation gets us invited back. Not only that, but word spreads to other venues.
Prescott NOW: What’s the smallest audience you’ve ever played for; the biggest?
The Copper State Band: As a group we think the smallest crowd was maybe 30 or so? But we actually had the opportunity in 2019 to play at a country/bluegrass-inspired event at Symphony Hall in Phoenix. There we played four consecutive nights to a packed house. That’s nearly 10,000 people in total! Truly a memorable experience that we cherish.
Prescott NOW : Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances?
The Copper State Band: Well, we love putting on a good show. We
think of artists like Garth Brooks, who use the whole stage and really engage with an audience. We try to do that the best we can with the stages we play on.
When a crowd can see that the band is having fun, they have more fun. And when a crowd gets to sing along and dance to their favorite country songs, it’s mission accomplished for us. It’s all about the energy.
Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott?
The Copper State Band: Prescott is such a beautiful area to begin with. We all love spending time there aside from performing. But when it comes to live music in Arizona, Whiskey Row is at the top of the list. Some of the best Arizona bands come through the venues downtown, and we are so fortunate to be among them. It’s the best place to have a good time, eat great food and listen to great music.

For instance, one patron didn’t know how her great grandparents met, but viewing the 1910 census in Ancestry.com helped her discover that her great grandmother (and her family) was the next-door neighbor of her great grandfather’s brother (and his family).
Your library card also allows you to use two additional genealogy databases online from anywhere: Heritage
Quest (for general genealogy research) and Fold3 (for U.S. military-based genealogy research).
If you would like more personal help with your research, we offer Virtual Genealogy Mentor Sessions twice per month with a member of the Northern Arizona Genealogical Society. UNCLE BUD’S BLENDS RIGHT INTO PRESCOTT
by Christopher Buell, Uncle Bud’s
Our House Specialty is jambalaya — chicken, Tasso ham, andouille sausage, holy trinity (onions, celery, green bell pepper) bit of tomato, house Cajun spices, all simmered in a rich chicken stock with rice.
While my café and catering business in Rochester, N.Y., was up for sale, I created a sauce and spice blend company called Uncle Bud’s Blends. I sold the cafe and catering company so I could move closer to my two children and bring my startup spice blends with me.
The search for a space to produce my blends morphed into Uncle Bud’s Place.
Uncle Bud’s Place is where you will find the finest Cajun, Creole, BBQ and homestyle foods. My name is Chris Buell, I am the chef/owner, and Uncle Bud’s Place is a tribute to my dad, Elmer “Bud” Buell. Stop by to learn about the Uncle Bud Story.
I started cooking at home with my dad at the age of 8 and spent 35 years as a professional chef and restaurateur. The food is a product of my dad’s teachings and how I expanded on those concepts as a chef. Some of the recipes are more than 50 years old!
When I read Paul Prudhomme’s first cook book, it reminded me of how I grew up. Vegetables came from the garden, chicken and eggs from the chicken coop. Apples and blackberries picked wild in the woods. Fresh dug horseradish every spring. It is with that mentality that I prepare the food. Everything thing is fresh and made from scratch, (with
the exception, prebreaded shrimp for the po’ boy) in small batches. With menu items like Bud’s Cajun Greens, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Chicken & Shrimp Etouffee and the Cajun Smoked Chuck Roast, I feel we have some outstanding dishes that you can’t get anywhere else!
Uncle Bud’s Place opened in Prescott in August of 2019 in Frontier Village. In May of 2024 we moved to our present location, 150 E. Sheldon St. in the Depot Plaza. We do mostly take-out, but we also have seating for 24 and have plenty of folks eating in.
There is retail space where you can purchase all of the Uncle Bud’s Blends, rubs, BBQ sauces, and merchandise.
For more information, visit www.UncleBudsPlace.com.

World’s Oldest Rodeo ® seeks Applicants for Junior Ambassadors
by Yvonne Gibbs, Prescott Frontier Days ® volunteer
Welcome to the third annual Junior Ambassador Program for the Prescott Frontier Days World’s Oldest Rodeo! We are looking for motivated students or student athletes to be ambassadors to the youth community of Yavapai County.
Applicants must be 18 or younger, in high school and have a driver’s license. Applicants do not have to compete in rodeo events.
Junior Ambassador team members receive scholarships, access to rodeo and business professionals for personal/professional development, credit hours for community service, exclusive discounts and rodeo swag.
Essential skills for an ambassadorship are: adaptability to various schedules, great communication abilities, self-motivation and being ready to roll up their sleeves for physical and mental activities.
Sahalie Maurer, Junior Ambassador in 2024 writes:
“The Junior Ambassador program was such an amazing opportunity! I personally love the aspect of working hands-on with the livestock, specifically the horses, and I love social media and public outreach work, and I am so grateful that I got to expand in both areas within the program this year!
“From running the social media during rodeo week and working closely with the media personals, to helping the pickup men wash and prep their horses for each performance of the rodeo, to networking with business owners and community members in the 1888 Buckle Club, learning how to run merchandise sales,
and getting the true behind-the-scenes look at rodeo production. Every moment was so fun and helped me develop and hone skills both in the rodeo industry and to apply to any future career or endeavor.
“The program helped develop and deepen my passion for the rodeo industry and has confirmed for me that I want to continue to work in the rodeo industry! This program gave me the skills, experience, networks and connections so that I may successfully pursue a career in rodeo production and the program gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to receive experience in the industry and witness the excitement of rodeo prep and rodeo week firsthand!”
Applications for the 2025 Junior Ambassador program will be accepted through March 1; applicants will be notified by April 1.
To receive a Junior Ambassador Program package, please contact the Prescott Frontier Days rodeo office at 928.445.3103 . A completed application, cover letter and resume and interview are required. For assistance, contact the rodeo office or email pfdyouth@worldsoldestrodeo.com

Acker Night Brought out Cheery Strollers
submitted by Helken & Horn Advertising Agency
The 36th Acker Night — Prescott’s beloved musical holiday tradition — provided spirited entertainment Dec. 13 with more than 500 talented entertainers, free photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus and a festive atmosphere in the heart of Prescott’s downtown, all while supporting music education for local schoolchildren.
Highlights included: musicians and performers from rock and roll to bluegrass and country music; 130 local businesses opening their doors as live music venues; and schoolchildren singing carols.
Performers donated their time to fill downtown streets with holiday spirit as people strolled through the area to listen to and watch them.
“Acker Night is a testament to the generosity and spirit of this community,” said Steve Acker, President of Acker Night. “Every year, hundreds of musicians donate their time and talents, creating a truly unique event that no other community offers in Arizona.”
Thanks to the generosity of attendees and contributions to artists’ tip bags, the event raises funds annually to provide more
than 65 scholarships for private music lessons and support music programs across three area school districts.
“This event truly captures the heart of Prescott — charity, community and charm,” Acker said. “It’s not just a celebration; it’s a tradition that showcases the best of Arizona’s Christmas City spirit.”
Acker Night sponsors included Desert Financial Credit Union, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and Experience Prescott Office of Tourism.

Fiesta Bowl Charities Helps Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters
Fiesta Bowl Charities, in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, celebrated the unveiling of the Community Resource Room refresh at Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters in Prescott.
The sixth Community Resource Room project filled a significant need for the Prescott group, which was founded in 1971 — the same year as the Fiesta Bowl Organization — and serves more than 300 youth across 20 communities and 65 schools throughout Yavapai County and Sedona.
Fiesta Bowl Charities and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona renovated a former staff area at the Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters Prescott facility into the newly named Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Resource Room. The new space will create a safe, welcoming and engaging environment for matches between Bigs and Littles to meet, learn and grow together.
The renovated space will serve approximately 500 people annually
and allows the organization to continue to strengthen connections within its community and support the growth of its mentorship programs, trainings and workshops.
The Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters community will enjoy new laptops and iPads, a projector, TV, 3D printer and virtual reality and video game devices in addition to art supplies, books and board games.
“This upgraded space will be a game-changer and allow for greater mentorship and collaboration for everyone in the community,” said Fiesta Bowl Chief of Staff and Vice President of Community Investment Kristina Chumpol.
The room will help foster relationships by facilitating the critical initial matchmaker meetings that bring together Littles, their families and potential Bigs. It will also serve as a host location for Big Connection meetings, which engage community members to learn about Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters and
encourage opportunities to become a Big or donor.
“We are deeply thankful to Fiesta Bowl Charities and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona for their generous support of Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters and the youth we serve,” said Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Kristen Kerns.
Lining the walls are news clips highlighting the rich history of Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters, reminding everyone who steps into the Fiesta Bowl Charities Community Resource Room of the impact YBBBS has made over the last five decades, while looking ahead to the future.
This project marks the sixth Community Resource Room renovation between Fiesta Bowl Charities and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, who also created the Empowering Diversity Scholarship and set a Guinness World Record for the largest game of Freeze Tag.

Repeat Home Buyers Ruling the Market
courtesy of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®
According to the most recent research from the National Association of REALTORS®, the U.S. housing market is seeing big shifts in buyer demographics. The data highlights notable trends and challenges in the U.S. housing market, revealing that first-time homebuyers now represent just 24% of all buyers, down from 32% last year and the lowest share on record.
With rising home prices and mortgage rates, it’s taking longer for new buyers to enter the market, pushing their average age up to 38, and decreasing the total amount of potential first-time buyers. Meanwhile, repeat buyers also have hit a record high age of 61, reflecting the market’s ongoing affordability issues for all buyers.
According to Jessica Lautz, NAR’s deputy chief economist, today’s housing market is distinctly split between new buyers struggling
with high prices and existing homeowners who can leverage their home equity. Married couples make up the majority of buyers, while single female buyers have seen an increase, particularly among firsttime buyers, reflecting rising financial independence in single women.
A growing trend in multigenerational living also is taking shape, with 17% of recent buyers choosing to live with family to manage costs or to accommodate aging relatives or young adults moving back home. Family support has become a more prominent factor, with economic pressures driving families to pool resources and prioritize proximity.
On the selling side, a primary motivation is moving closer to family or transitioning to a better home, with remote work enabling location flexibility, too.
Down payments have reached
new highs, with a median of 18% across all buyers. Many first-time buyers depend on personal savings or family assistance, and 26% of all buyers paid cash — a record number. For first-time buyers, it’s increasingly common to receive financial help from family or use inherited assets to cover rising upfront costs.
REALTORS® are more essential than ever, with 86% of buyers using their expertise and 88% of all purchases completed with their help. Nearly 90% of buyers express high satisfaction with their agents, and with today’s complex market conditions, many buyers and sellers emphasize the importance of working with an experienced agent.
Nearly all sellers — 90% — work with an agent, reflecting the continued value of professional guidance in navigating the complex buying and selling process, especially in this high-stakes market.

Summer Car Extravaganza Set for August
submitted by the Prescott Antique Auto Club
The Prescott Antique Auto Club (PAAC) will present the 50th annual Watson Lake Car Show, Old Engine Fire-Up, Swap Meet and Car Coral Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
PAAC, a cornerstone of the City of Prescott since its establishment in 1970, has been deeply involved in various community initiatives. The restoration of the 1931 Seagrave Prescott Fire Department’s first ladder truck and the Durant 1927 Star Four Touring Car. The proudly displayed Durant in the Sharlot Hall Museum’s transportation building is a testament to our commitment.
Our members also have contributed to beautifying the city’s landscape by planting trees and captivating old engine fire-up displays at Sharlot Hall. The ladder truck and Durant were showcased in downtown Prescott’s 2024 Frontier Days Parade.
PAAC endeavors to give to the community. We award annual scholarships to students currently pursuing automotive-related degrees. Additionally, we fund an endowment to ensure future scholarships in perpetuity.
In support of PAAC, the Yavapai College Art Department has agreed to conduct an Art Contest to select the poster and advertisements for this year’s 50th anniversary Watson Lake Car Show.
PAAC supports our military veterans by visiting veteran care facilities and bringing classic cars to display for their enjoyment. Members also visit the Veterans Hospital in Prescott every Christmas and gives presents to the veteran patients there. PAAC supports the Nation’s Finest Food Bank in Prescott by providing dry food donations throughout the year.
We support Make-A-Wish Foundation and endeavor to make a wish come true in our way through classic car shows, rides in local parades, etc.
PAAC is committed to fostering a sense of community through inclusivity. Every year, we host three Parts Exchange/ Swap Meet events at our clubhouse at 823 Osburn St. in Prescott. These events are open to all, and community members are encouraged to bring items to sell, trade or share. Setting up a table or booth and parking is free.
Between April and October, PAAC hosts a Cruise-In at the BMO Bank parking lot on the third Thursday of the month at 303 N. Montezuma St. Community members can bring their cars for display, enjoy other vehicles and patronize nearby shops for food, frozen yogurt and much more.
For more information, you can visit PAAC at paacaz.com, contact the PAAC President, Michael Odle at leadcons@aol.com, or call 661.618.9913.
