love my Northern Arizona home.
We have enough space to keep all of the many pets we want to have, close but not too close to our neighbors. We’re even closer to the great outdoors, full of opportunities to hike and bike and just be in the clean, invigorating fresh air we’re blessed with here. I also love to travel. I get to see the other sides of the world, hear and learn about different cultures and languages, feel the heat of the desert, the breeze of the beach and the cold of mountains higher than the ones we call home.

ravel is worth every dollar you spend on it. It opens up your life and connects you to the world and all its people and living things. You see oceans and mountains and icebergs and caverns and forests bigger and wilder than anything you’ve ever dreamed could exist, and immerse yourself in cultures and languages that are “foreign” to you now, but won’t be for long. Luxury comes in different forms, just like people and cultures. There’s
the luxury of experiencing the world’s natural and manmade wonders and the luxury of being pampered and catered to by the world’s best service staff and tour guides. These destinations offer both! AMALFI COAST This is where you find those fairytale towns perched precariously on cliffs over the sea you see in countless posters and paintings. This 34-mile stretch of the southwestern Italian

F E AT U R E coastline is surprisingly compact and easy to navigate, which helps to compensate for the traffic. Add the isle of Capri and you may never want to leave! Luxury abounds here with iconic hotels like Le Siernuse in Positano and Palazzo Avino in Ravello. BORA BORA The tiny Polynesian island with massive doses of beauty and luxury is also known for its iridescent lagoon and coral gardens, populated by cartoonishly colorful fish species with evocative names like pufferfish and butterflyfish. Most of the accommodations are private thatched-roof bungalows on stilts, and visitors can be as active or languorous as they desire as they snorkel, swim with sharks, enjoy ocean-water spa treatments and eat delectable seafood. GALAPAGOS ISLANDS The archipelago so formative to
Darwin’s theories when he visited almost 200 years ago is still one of the most unique and diverse ecosystems in the world, and its residents and the Ecuadorean government are committed to maintaining its status. Its hotels are relatively small and extremely eco-conscious compared to what you’ll find anywhere else but offer superb food and spa services to fortify travelers for all the adventures they choose. MALDIVES This chain of more than 1,100 islands strung across the equator in the Indian Ocean perfected the idea of “one hotel, one island,” but travelers can also choose from resorts, guesthouses or “liveaboards,” or cruising on a yacht from atoll to atoll. Tourists swim, dive, snorkel, scuba and surf, surf, surf. They can also visit undersea restaurants and nightclubs.
MOROCCO This stunning nation is a gateway to the Mediterranean and the whole of Africa, a grand mix of beaches, deserts, mountains and cities from the ancient medinas in Fez and Marrakech to the modern glitz of Casablanca and Tangiers. Luxury abounds in its opulent hotels and resorts, riads and kasbahs, while renowned spas deliver hyperlocal treatments made from almonds, prickly pears and dates. You’ll also eat a lot of couscous and much more from the dynamic restaurant scene. PARIS The appeal of this European capital is not in its historic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame, nor its teeming, cosmopolitan neighborhoods, but in the splendor of their combination. As for luxury, for starters France has a “palace” designation for fivestar resorts that goes beyond that call of duty, and there are 12 here!

eaches are inherently grand with their unending horizons, cooling breezes and the stirring yet calming sound of waves crashing and rolling into the surf. Add sumptuous resorts and spas, exclusive shops and exceptional dining and you have luxury to the nth degree. These are beaches where natural splendor is augmented with impeccable lodging and services and unforgettable adventures. Some are protected by attendance caps and natural preserve status. You are going to have the time of your life, whichever one you choose. GRACE BAY BEACH, TURKS AND CAICOS This 7-mile stretch of powdered sugarsoft white sand on calm waters near this Caribbean destination’s largest town has been named the “best beach in the world” several times over. The public beach has nine access points and is family-friendly, with plenty of watersports options like snorkeling and jet skiing, plus the hybrid of “Snuba” diving. Or just bask in the sun on the sand or at its multiple luxury resorts offering beachfront villas, rejuvenating spa treatments and exemplary dining. PANTAI KOK, LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA This archipelago of 100-plus islands off the west coast of Malaysia is loaded with gorgeous beaches, but the swankiest of them all is probably Pantai Kok, found on its largest island right next to attractions like the cable car up to the peak of Mount Mat Cincinang, with its sweeping views over the rainforested mountains and on out to numerous tiny islets. There are no shops or stores directly on the public beach, but nearby five-star accommodations supply elegant rooms and restaurants, predominantly in the yacht-oriented Perdana Quay complex.

NUSA DUA, BALI, INDONESIA Nusa Dua is the place to go to be steeped in Balinese culture and opulent resort style. You’re close to the Uluwatu Temple, a 1,000-year-old Hindu sea temple perched on the edge of a cliff famous for its daily Kecak dance at sunset and felonious Macaque monkeys. Or visit the town of Ubud, a center for traditional spirituality and crafts surrounded by rice paddies. Nusa Dua’s high-end resorts use local materials, design and vegetation to bring you deep into the island’s heart while pampering you with exquisite cuisine and top-ranked spa selections. PLAGE DE PAMPELONNE, COTE D'AZUR, FRANCE The best of the best in the French Riviera, it’s known for its pristine white sand, classic resorts, chic restaurants and celebrity-studded yachts hanging out just offshore. This iconic beach is the heart of Europe’s Mediterranean playground and still free of the skyscraper backdrop that has overtaken too many shorelines — and it’s near many quaint towns just inland. PALM JUMEIRAH, DUBAI This palm tree-shaped cluster of manmade islands has beaches rimming each one of its “leaves” and is connected to the city by bridge monorail. Many A-listers including the Beckhams and Madonna have homes there, amidst a dizzying array of posh resorts and residences, designer shopping malls and top-scale restaurants. It’s all surrounded by the dramatically dazzling Persian Gulf and its other attractions include the mammoth Aquaventure Waterpark and the View at the Palm observation tower.

Interest Rates
2
& Inflation
by Steve Schott, Financial Advisor, Schott Financial Management
022 has been off to a volatile start. The Financial Sector has seen its 8th correction of 10% of the markets in 20 years. As anxietyprovoking as corrections can be, they are a necessary part of the process, especially if we want to see a return on our investments. What supersedes concern about market corrections is a market recession. Interest rates are historically low, and inflation is high. Combining low-interest rates, disruptions in supply chains, Covid-19 shutdowns, and large amounts of stimulus cash, it’s important for the Fed to raise rates as they cannot stay at zero forever. Raising interest rates is how the
22

Federal Reserve cools inflation. Cooling inflation will provide fixed income opportunities, especially for clients on a fixed income. It’s hard to not run out of money when inflation is at 7% and fixed rates are below 3%. As interest rates rise, consumers save because the returns from savings are higher. Consumers also tend to spend less when the cost of goods and services is more. In our current economic climate, fixed income opportunities, like bonds, don't provide the risk-adjusted return many retirees want. Just look at your savings account. Any interest earned on a corporate or municipal bond, for example, gets
eaten away by inflation. Increasing interest rates will provide additional investment options and make fixed-income products more desirable. It will also produce some market volatility. From my point of view, it would be nice to reduce the size of the Federal Reserve balance sheet by halting the purchase of American treasury bonds. As we head into spring it will be interesting to see what happens to inflation and interest rates. How often and when rates rise will be interesting. In my opinion, raising one to reduce another will be a good thing for the markets and general wellbeing of our economy and clients.

he word “spa” has expanded over the millennia from the name of a Belgian town by a mineral spring believed to have healing properties to mean any such community in Europe. In the 17th-19th centuries these European spa towns were centers of health and urban innovation, and 11 of them were jointly named as a UNESCO Heritage Site last year. All of them continue as centers of healing and relaxation, so consider adding a couple to your next continental itinerary: BADEN BEI WIEN, AUSTRIA Built around springs which appeared after a 1755 earthquake, this town’s “yellow gold” is the golden hue seen in its curative waters used for traditional treatments; it’s also become a modern center for the spine and musculoskeletal system. SPA, BELGIUM The town whose name was adopted by the entire water-cure movement is known for its extensive network of walking trails and being home to one of the world’s first casinos. Indulgent treatments include subaquatic massage. KARLOVY VARY, CZECH REPUBLIC The village was founded in the 15th century after royalty discovered the first of 79 hot- and cold-water springs in the area; today accommodations are just as majestic and available treatments even more varied. FRANTIŠKOVY LÁZNĚ, CZECH REPUBLIC Developed beginning in the 18th century, this city’s spa zone with historic resorts still frequented today is surrounded by open space on both sides, including its famous network of “heart trails.” MARIÁNSKÉ LÁZNĚ, CZECH REPUBLIC There are 40 springs within the town itself, sheltered by colonnades and

pavilions developed over the centuries. Visitors can build a pleasant vacation around relaxation, walks and sports. The three Czech towns are conveniently clustered on the nation’s western edge. VICHY, FRANCE Popularized by Napoleon, today this burg has a museum’s worth of architectural styles and you can still get the iconic Vichy shower, a massage therapy using 5 to 7 showerheads. BAD EMS, GERMANY Known for the Baroque style of its imperial bath, modern medicine has its place here alongside traditional European and Asian therapies. The continent’s first floating river sauna, the Emser Therme, is here. BADEN-BADEN, GERMANY This destination nestled in the hills of the Black Forest has two separate clusters of springs with differing emphases; Friedrichsbad’s enriching 17-step ritual and the Caracalla spa with luxe architecture and services. BAD KISSINGEN, GERMANY These springs were first discovered in the ninth century. Today tourists can enjoy the ultramodern conveniences of the KissSolis thermal baths and 20 state of the art spa and rehabilitation clinics. MONTECATINI TEME, ITALY Known for its exquisite gardens, statues and thermal treatments beginning with the 15th century, come here for thermal mud baths along with the rest of a full range of water therapies. BATH, GREAT BRITAIN The UK’s only naturally warm springs began attracting the Celts and Romans some 2,000 years ago and still draw crowds with, among other options, the Great Bath’s large thermal pool in use since those times.

New Luxury Home
by Gillian Haley, Vice President & Co-Owner, Haley Construction Company
e’ve become accustomed to spending more time at our homes over the last few years, and current home design trends reflect this. Homes across the market are being built, rebuilt and designed to be more luxurious and enveloping for families while also being more connected to the natural world. These are the biggest movements we’re seeing with our clients and throughout high-end projects. BASOPHILIC DESIGN/ OUTDOOR LIVING These major trends are feeding into the same impulse to erase or blur the lines between inside and outside life. Basophilic design connects living rooms and even bedrooms and baths to the outdoors via lush plant walls, gardens and trees planted under skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows onto mountains and meadows. Plush furniture, TVs, sound systems and dining tables are migrating outdoors, often in heated spaces under large retractable shades that let you see the stars at night. CURVILINEAR ELEMENTS Most homes have an element of “straight-line syndrome.”
26
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
Even if arched doorways are incorporated into the design, the walls meet at right angles, hallways are straight and counters and dividing walls are linear. Now, architects and interior designers are rounding off those corners and drawing squiggly lines whenever they get a chance. High barrel-vault ceilings, meandering walkways, arched windows and doors and roundededge furniture give comforting vibes and a nod to nature. VERSATILE SPACES As our homes become more multipurpose, so do our rooms. This can mean great rooms that can be easily cordoned off into more intimate nooks and crannies and
dining tables that can be converted into desks, rather than haphazardly commandeered for the role. Outdoor spaces often are the easiest to adapt to different roles. Inflatable screens and lightweigsht furniture for a movie or game nights can be stowed away so guests at a formal cocktail party can mingle. MARBLE It’s the single best example of a nature-made material that also screams luxury! It’s a perfectly stunning element for floors, countertops, bathroom sinks and walls, even in the more rugged and rough planks coveted at this moment for new builds and remodels.

he bad thing about good places is that word gets out. A beautiful area wild enough to be special but close enough to modern conveniences to keep our shortened attention spans engaged is trumpeted by a few people, and within a few years you must share it with thousands of other travelers. It’s hard to select hidden vacation spots because the moment they pop up on the right person’s radar they’re destined for discovery, but here are a few locales that appear to be at the sweet spot between obscurity and fame. GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN This growing city combines Midwestern hospitality and kid-friendliness with a thriving adult beverage scene, claiming the mantles of “America’s Best Beer City” and “Craft Beverage Capital.” Stroll the downtown “refreshment area” with your drink to attractions like the world-class Grand Rapids Art Museum, Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and the Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives (affectionately known as GRAAMA). Check out the elegant Amway Grand Plaza for four-diamond luxury. MENDOCINO, CALIFORNIA Mendocino is a picturesque collection of Victorian villages 150 miles north of San Francisco strung along rugged coastlines, sprawling vineyards and towering redwood forests, welcoming those who prefer taking the scenic route. Most accommodations put an emphasis on pampering guests, whether they’re B&Bs or resorts with day spas offering massage and hydrotherapy — but no big chains! Go to the shore to visit unusually beautiful stretches like Glass Beach and Bowling Ball Beach.
ISLAMORADA, FLORIDA This district embraces six islands in the northern Florida Keys, each with its own gorgeous white beaches but the same laidback charm. The Morada Way corridor has six blocks of galleries, art studios, restaurants and shops. Kayaking and snorkeling are just a couple of the activities you can partake in while you’re here, and its top resorts, Cheeca Lodge and Spa and Amara Cay Resort, include elegant surroundings and top-notch services. ESTES PARK, COLORADO The gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, this classic mountain town is 90 minutes north of Denver and the ideal base for park adventures like hiking, wildlife viewing and scenic drives in the heart-stopping beauty of the park. If you can get past the fact the historic Stanley Hotel was the inspiration for “The Shining,” explore its four options for accommodations and a brand-new day spa. MOLOKAI, HAWAII The fifth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands remains tucked away as a lesser-known option that retains the charm of old Hawaii as the birthplace of the hula, with unpaved roads leading into stunning jungles and over to villages like Maunaloa or the main town of Kaunakakai with a mighty 3,500 residents. The island offers another respite from corporate hospitality, with just the Hotel Moloka’i and lots of luxurious condos and vacation rentals on one of the quietest, most rural areas of the state. Its location between Oahu and Maui makes it perfect for experiencing the joys of both hubs!

Face Forward WHEN FLYING
ou’ve been dreaming for two years about this vacation to a far-off land — once you get past that 9-hour plane ride and the number the parched cabin air and all the germs it circulates will do on your skin. You probably don’t want to spend your first couple of days in paradise trying to reconstitute your complexion, so here are a couple of preflight, inflight and postflight tips to ensure your skin can glow with your excitement once you arrive: BEFORE YOU GO IN THE AIR • Keep hydrating your skin with moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid and/ or lipid oils night before and the morning of. • Drink lots of water but don’t spray water onto your face, since it will just evaporate during the first part of your flight and could suck the rest of the moisture out with it. • When getting ready to board, don’t wear makeup if you’re comfortable with that, but don’t forget to use a moisturizer or sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, because you’re going to be closer to the sun and airplane windows won’t filter out the UV rays.
30
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
• Warnings against wearing makeup during a flight still hold some water, but moisturizing, noncomedogenic products likely won’t do any damage, especially on rides of about four or fewer hours.
• The salty, sugary food normally provided in-flight may leave you even more dehydrated, so pack a healthy snack with protein, whole grains, nuts and veggies • Avoid wearing a cloth face mask. AFTER YOU LAND
• Use ice cubes to calm puffy eyes while taking off and landing, then apply a couple drops of eye cream to protect this especially sensitive part of your face.
• This is when you should remove all makeup, cleanse and exfoliate your skin to wash off any bacteria and other irritants that did make it through your inflight defenses.
• If you’re sans makeup, apply more moisturizer every hour and don’t be stingy with the lip balm.
• Maintain your regular skincare route, with a little extra moisturizer during the day to keep you looking and feeling your best.

here’s no kind of vacation quite as luxurious as a charter yacht cruise. You and your party — most typically a dozen or fewer — will be catered to by a top-notch crew who will prepare mouthwatering meals and drinks, keep your cabins impeccable and fulfill your every whim while you enjoy such amenities as glass-bottomed pools, beach club services, wellness facilities with massage rooms and gyms and watersports toys like Jet Skis and windsails. Add lavish master cabins, cinemas, live entertainment and beauticians and you may not ever want to disembark, but destinations like these will seriously tempt you to go ashore. SEYCHELLES You will be hard-pressed not to call this nation off the east coast of Africa anything but paradise, with 115 islands with towering palms, inviting beaches and stunning granite cliffs polished by an unknowable number of high tides. Praslin, Mahé, La Digue and its other islands have the famous “double coconuts,” giant tortoises and endless opportunities to snorkel, dive, sail and eat through its gorgeous scenery and culture. BAHAMAS You may have been to Nassau a time or two, but have you had a chance to see the “real Bahamas?” The Exuma islands have astonishingly white sand at idyllic beaches, stunning blue water that can be seen from outer space and chances to swim with sharks and pigs. (Yes, pigs. They’re adorable.) Throughout the Caribbean nation you can fish for mahi mahi, dive for lobsters, snorkel through sea caverns and Jet Ski through channels or sip champagne on deck while watching this world swim by.

CROATIA With 2,500 miles of coastline and more than 1,000 offshore islands, it’s rapidly becoming one of the most popular spots for charter yacht cruises in Europe. Also known as the Dalmatian Coast, you’ll be able to visit castles, fortresses and other historic sites as well as savor some of the continent’s best seafood, with plenty of time left to dive, sail or simply gaze at the deep blue sea. The modern city of Split is built around still-existing Roman ruins, and the island of Hvar is the big draw for jet-setters. THAILAND Hop islands and beaches along the shore of this long, lean nation with a spellbinding culture and cuisine. You can dive, snorkel and swim away from your cares along the way and explore the golden beaches and nightlife offered by the largest island of Phuket. You won’t be able to miss its 150foot Buddha! You can also see the mangrove rivers of James Bond Island (Ko Phing Kan, where Man with the Golden Gun was filmed) and the quieter beaches of the Raksha Islands. GREECE AND TURKEY No other location seems as tailor-made for luxury yachting as the Greek Islands, tumbling into the Mediterranean out of the seat of modern civilization. Whether you’re seeking history, architecture, cuisine, nightlife or beach reverie, you’ll find it in the Ionian, Cyclades or Sarconic islands. Some itineraries include the lovely Turkish Turquoise Coast, with iconic beaches at Ölüdeniz, Patara, and İztuzu and a diverse range of communities and ancient relics.

ometimes you want to take a vacation where you feel truly pampered and indulged, but you fail to bake it into your plans. You assume it will happen based on the hotels, attractions and restaurants you choose, but at the end of your trip you realize that really didn’t happen, or at least didn’t meet your expectations. Maybe you were left holding and lugging the bags through the airport or searching fruitlessly for restaurants with out-of-this-world cuisine and service. The best way to ensure your high-end vacation actually feels luxurious is to book extra amenities ahead of time. • Plane sense — You already know not to fly coach, but airlines have been putting more amenities into their business class sections, making it a bigger step up and worthy of the extra cost. First class is harder to find, but if it’s available to where you’re going (most likely on longer flights) and you’re able to foot the significantly higher fare, the lie-flat seats and ornate lounges are definitely worth your while. • At the airport — This can be as much about what’s not there as what is — shipping your luggage ahead paves the way

to a relaxed vacation vibe. Having an airport greeter to lead you through customs at any international airport will have you sailing to your ultimate destination.
• Rent a luxury villa — Whether it’s in Florida, Tuscany or Goa, luxury villas offer over-the-top amenities like a chef on call 24/7, ultrapersonalized concierge services, housekeeping staff and onsite massage and other spa treatments. The privacy and the services they
proffer are unparalleled.
• Private guidance — If you’re at all unfamiliar with your destination it’s imperative to find a private guide with the deep knowledge to take you where you will get the most out of your trip. They’ll get you to the front of every line and steer you to the most reputable and accommodating stores and attractions.
If your interest revolves around a certain aspect of the culture such as art or history, find a specialist.

hile you may be thrilled to be in Amsterdam, it’s more than a bit irksome that your luggage is still at Paris Orly airport. Makes what you’ve tucked into your backpack or tote all that more important. So clean underwear (preferably a total change of clothing) should be first on your list of must-have carry-on items. Fingers crossed that your checked baggage accompanies you to your destination, but be prepared whether your flight is long or short. While you may opt for an airplaneapproved suitcase (22” by 14” by 9”) to stow in the upper bin, these can be hard to get in and out of. That one personal item — such as a laptop bag, purse, briefcase, beach bag — allows easier access for essentials. Reminder: Containers of liquid, paste, aerosol, gel or cream normally can be no larger than 3.4 ounces.

You are allowed to pack antlers, however. But double check with the airline … While a baseball bat is out, a baseball, basketball, soccer ball, football and bowling ball are in. And spurs and holiday lights are totally allowed (thank goodness). If considering flying with something not mentioned, it's always a good idea to check your airline’s website or the TSA website for what’s allowable for carry-on or checked baggage.

ith travel restrictions being lifted, more people than ever will be traveling this spring and summer. So we now have that never-ending travel conundrum … what to pack! To help you out here are a few tips we have learned over the years. Make a list. This is certainly not something that many of us want to do, but it is very helpful. Know what you are doing every day of your trip including travel days. Plan your outfits around those activities and see if the opportunity exists to wear some of the same items more than once. Rule of 3. This tip applies to shoes. Thoughtfully consider what you actually need. Most of us love our shoes and having choices, but when both space and weight are issues the rule of 3 must apply. Perhaps a pair of sandals, flats and heels will cover all your bases. Athletic shoes are also an option depending on what you are doing. Take advantage of hotel toiletries. Yes, we all have our favorite products but using what you are provided can definitely save space. Remember that hotels often provide blow dryers for guest use. Roll, roll and roll. Rolling is definitely the way to go when it comes to packing. Take all of your
42

recently ironed items and roll them as tightly as you can. Start with your heaviest items first and finish with your lighter items. Don’t forget about layers. Layering is your best friend when it comes to travel. Layer light knits with button up shirts and blouses. Modern fabrics are lightweight, comfortable and many are relatively wrinkle free. Using a shirt as a jacket, aka “shacket” is actually an item you will see in many stores.
Scarves. A great scarf can keep you warm on a chilly airplane and can also be used as an accessory item. Larger wraps known as shawls or ruanas are incredibly versatile. Look for items that can be worn in place of a jacket depending on the time of year. Now that you are packed and ready to go, don’t forget to enjoy your time away! Your favorite boutiques are more than happy to help you find the perfect travel items.

hile the trend of “glamping,” or glam camping, has been around since the turn of this century, it’s taken off over the last couple of years, as people have sought more nature-based vacations in less-crowded spaces. Couples and families have been flocking to where they can spend a few nights close to nature without compromising on the comfort and services they’ve come to expect while they travel. At many resorts you can sleep in cabins or vintage travel vehicles ranging from covered wagons to Airstream trailers, but many glampers opt for the spaciousness of giant tents, pitched on a permanent foundation, with water, electricity, king-sized beds, fully stocked luxury bathrooms, fine linens, porches, kitchenettes and access to gyms and wellness services, along with the even greater outdoors. Most have fewer spaces than a boutique hotel and are open seasonally, so remember to book early! Here are a few ideas to get you started: RESORT AT PAWS UP, GREENOUGH, MONTANA Like most glamping resorts this one is pet-friendly, but it took its name from the road it sits on. It’s relatively large at 30 units, and what units they are! With hardwood floors, air conditioning, heated bathroom floors and butler service it seems a little absurd to call them “tents,” especially with a gourmet restaurant onsite, but it’s set on 37,000 acres of pristine open space, with 100 miles of trails and 10 miles along the Blackfoot River. Open mid-May through mid-October.
UNDER CANVAS GRAND CANYON, VALLE, ARIZONA Under Canvas specializes in luxurious campsites near national parks and monuments including Zion, Yellowstone, Great Smoky Mountains and Mount Rushmore. If you haven’t braved the Grand Canyon crowds lately, book a tent with a bedroom wing and a leather sofa in the lounge area with ultra-plush linens and a woodburning stove. It’s about a 25-minute drive to the South Rim entrance, but your experience coordinator will ensure you get the absolute best out of your time. WAHWAHTAYSEE RESORT, KINGSBURY, TEXAS This campsite includes seven tents and one container cabin on the banks of the San Marcos River about 50 miles south of Austin. The one- or two-bedroom safaristyle tents have king beds, kitchenettes, showers and deep spa-style bathtubs. They’re also heated and air conditioned and are available year-round. You’ll also have your own golf cart to explore the 100-acre property, which offers multiple river beaches, fly fishing, walking trails, pecan orchard, beach volleyball and bocce ball. BYO kayak! HUTTOPIA PARADISE SPRINGS, VALYERMO, CALIFORNIA The first West Coast outlet of a popular European chain, this is built on the site of what might be called an early glamping resort that served Hollywood icons including Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin. Today’s guests can swim in the same pool as they stay in wood-andcanvas tents with huge outdoor decks, barbecues, custom mattresses and more within a wide, gorgeously lush canyon in Angeles National Forest. Note that some tents do not have a private bathroom.

re you missing that oasis feel to your front and back yard areas? The vast number of possibilities in design — the radiant range of colors in seasonal or annual plants that treat our eyes and the tree choices that delight us with their sweet perfumes and beauty — are endless. Irrigation systems are key to any successful Arizona landscape. Lush green grass tickles your toes and generates a natural coolant, collects soil and unhealthy run off from other areas, and it provides clean oxygen. Lawns require irrigation maintenance so having the proper system is important. Drip irrigation systems save water because of the little run off or evaporation. The heat and freezing temperatures in Arizona can be very stressful for our plants so consider working with a licensed irrigation specialist who understands the importance of proper adjustments being made during the various seasons. Landscape design allows home and business owners to make an immediate positive impression on visitors. But beyond aesthetic reasons, your design also can be used as a motivator to be more active outside.

This could include working in the garden, playing sports or games with the family, or just enjoying a barbecue with friends. Adding an outdoor living space to any area is the cheapest way to enhance any area around your home. Investing in hardscape material (manmade, non-living) is valuable and beneficial to the environment. How about adding that paver or rock walkway? Install edging to create a unique look with various materials on either side, have a deck built or a patio area installed for gatherings with those close to you. Are you looking for a landscaping type that requires little maintenance? Gravel, boulders, steppingstones, pavers
or bricks are simple, yet add texture, color and definition. Wood chips are a natural option that can be used to limit weed growth and conserve water along with enhancing curb appeal. Artificial grass is vibrant in color, pleasurable and relaxing, and can illuminate any area. How about a warm area to sit around during those cold winter months? A fire pit is a great gathering centerpiece. Consider putting in a retaining/sitting wall for more acquaintances to meet. Installing hardscape materials will allow for fewer areas needing high maintenance. Landscaping ideas are endless. Find the right landscaper to help bring your ideas to reality.

our upcoming dinner party — which ideally you started planning a month ago — should not be based on experimentation but rather simple tried-and-true foods you are used to making. Use highquality and seasonal ingredients. Help yourself shine and ensure a good experience for all by planning and cooking delicious-over-impressive foods. If you’ve decided on a short menu, a good rule of thumb is to increase flavors as you serve. For a longer menu, switch back and forth following a rich dish with a lighter course. Depending on your druthers, courses can include hors d’oeuvre, appetizers, salad, fish, main course, palate cleanser (sorbet, for example), dessert and mignardise (bite-sized dessert such as a petit four or truffle). The difference between hors d’oeuvres and appetizers? The first usually is served as your guests mingle before a meal and consists of one or two bites, while the later starts off the meal at the table and is three to four bites. One great tip: Bring your menu to your wine merchant for advice. Others things to consider: • Choose main dishes before side dishes. • Incorporate make-ahead dishes. • Count on half a pound of poultry or beef per guest; 4 to 5 ounces of pasta; 1 ½ ounces of grains; 3 to 4 ounces of veggies. • Avoid repeat ingredients. • Avoid extreme temperature changes between courses.

• Choose dishware that contrasts with what is being served. As they say, “Timing is everything,” so do yourself a favor and a month out choose a theme, as desired; crosscheck dates for conflicts of community events and perhaps with your guests; plan whether buffet or plated and the flow — cocktails, dinner, afterdinner; plan your menu (and the time it will take to prepare your dishes); and send out invitations. Two weeks before is a good time to figure out your place settings and the amount of tableware you’ll need (serving dishes and utensils); plan/ make decorations for a themed party, as needed, or for just those special touches you want; create an upbeat playlist for background music. One week to go. Tidy up your house, double check that you have all the tableware, dishes, glasses, etc. that you need, figure out your seating plan, clean all this stuff as needed, make your shopping list. Three days before the big day, arrange the furniture, put away items you don’t want seen (like mail), figure out a purse and coat room and do your grocery shopping. It’s the day before so do your food preparation, any last minute cleaning and set the table. This is a good night for pizza at your kitchen counter. The dinner party is tonight! This is the day to buy fresh flowers or have them delivered, get ice, clear out the dishwasher, light candles if using them and sync changing into your party outfit with your cooking and the knowledge that some guests may arrive early. Show time.

CHEESE AND WINE:
Create Perfect Pairings
T
he most popular cheese in the U.S. is mozzarella. The most popular wine is cabernet sauvignon — do not pair these two. As a semi-soft cheese, mozzarella longs for the acidic taste of pinot grigio, pinot noir or riesling to balance its mild, sweet flavor. Cabernet sauvignon demands a hardier, more complex cheese such as cheddar, Parmigiano-Reggiano, manchego, Gouda. (FYI, cheddar was the most popular cheese in the U.S. until mozzarella took over.) For your book club, upscale poker game, pool party, before/ after opera night or any other time when you want to treat friends to your pairing expertise, tuck away this information and guide. KNOW THIS When putting cheese and wine together it’s a matter of figuring out how the moisture and fat content, texture and flavor of any given cheese will work with the acidity, sweetness, body and structure of any given wine. Young cheeses go best with juicy, fruity and fresh wines such as crisp whites, dry rosés and reds with good acidity and sprightly fruit. Older cheeses need bold, complex wines such as tannic red wines. In other words, wines less than 12% ABV (alcohol by volume) are less intense and click with delicately flavored
50
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
cheeses. Wines over 14.5% ABV are intense and pair better with more strongly flavored cheeses. If serving a variety of cheeses with one wine, think light and citrusy such as a riesling or sparkling wine — when in doubt with whatever you are pairing, you can’t really go wrong with Champagne. Remember to bring your cheeses to full flavor by removing any you’ve refrigerated 30 minutes before serving, and offer crackers and bread to cleanse the palate. PAIR THESE • Ricotta, feta, brie, Camembert with Chablis, chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, Beaujolais • Havarti, Edam, Gruyère, Monterey Jack with chardonnay, zinfandel, merlot, red Burgundy • Époisses, taleggio, Morbier (stinky cheeses) with gewürztraminer, riesling, Sauternes • Stitlton, Roquefort, cambozola with red port, tawny port, Tokaji • Pecorino, Asiago, Cheshire with Madeira, Bordeaux, California red blends

ettling on a single “look of the summer” is getting harder and harder as trends rise and fall with the speed of a TikTok reel and selfexpression becomes the new cool. But some of our tendencies are coming to the fore and can be identified as in vogue as the weather heats up. Here’s a handful that might work for you! COLUMNS OF COLOR We’re still looking for every excuse we can to wear can’t-miss-it color, and it’s not hard to find one when so many others are doing it! Many of these ensembles are blooming as monochromatic greens, pinks, oranges, yellows and purples, letting us strut our stuff in eye-catching suits, dresses and coordinates. Others are getting even bolder by experimenting with color combos few would have attempted three years ago, realizing a lot more of them work than you’d thought.
54
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
To keep up with this trend, shop for anything with vibrant hues, especially limey greens, hot pinks and sunny or buttery yellows. . UNDERSTATED LUXURY Our closets are also making room for a somewhat countervailing trend of cautious-seeming neutrals, often monochromatic, cut with style that speak to chic style and class. These garments often have some little tweak or twist for added interest, such as an unusually cut collar, oversized buttons or a hard-tofind, opulent kind of finish. These pieces are valued for their flexibility and timelessness, so they’re worth the investment. Look out for wide-leg trouser suits, sleek maxi shirts, boxy blazers, leather loafers and elegant shirts in white, cream, beige, gray, black and a few pale pastels. All should be basic yet indispensable.
DRESSES TO THE MAXI Ankle-length skirts and dresses are everywhere on the runway and are yet another form the monochromatic trend has taken and can be either brash or cool. Streamlined and form-fitting will dominate, leaving plenty of room for some fun layers on top. Wraparound skirts and cropped tops look amazing together, as most of us have found out at one time or another. A few designs are even reaching the floor, but they may not be a great fit with the relaxed, outdoorsy Northern Arizona lifestyle. Shop for pencil-cut skirts or ribbed dresses and go for low necklines and sexy cutouts if you’re ready for them! SPORTY SPRINGS OFF THE COURT Fashion is still gravitating toward the sporty and casual bent much of society has taken lately, but we’re starting to move away from the sweatpants and sweatshirts we were sinking into. We’re shifting to running gear and tennis skirts, visors and polo shirts. Squeaky tracksuits and cross-trainers that actually might be worn while exercising are in demand along with coordinated hats and bags. Hunt for peppy, comfortable outfits in luxe fabrics and white or some of the radiant reds or other saturated colors that have made the hit parade. Use casual but sturdy jewelry to complete the look.

C lean Beauty IS COMPLEX BUT
Worthwhile
T
he definition of “clean beauty” when it comes to product use is easy to embrace: Don’t make or use cosmetics that could harm us or the environment. It may not surprise you that it’s incredibly hard to reach that goal. The list of ingredients of concern is more than 10,000 items long and is always evolving. Labeling requirements are lax, and in some areas, especially hair care, there still are very few “clean” options. And yet this is a goal we must keep moving toward, even if it takes years or decades more to arrive at it. We’re talking about potentially saving ourselves from cancer, reproductive issues, allergies, slowed metabolism and other threats to
our health, and saving our planet from additional water, land and air pollution. Don’t let this intimidate you, though. The best way to start making a difference is to focus on the products you use daily and make any changes you’re able to. Let’s take a look at a few of the basics. ANTIPERSPIRANT There is no definitive link between using antiperspirant containing aluminum and breast cancer, though patients are told to avoid it during radiation treatment. Skin absorbs very little aluminum but the amount increases from .01% to .06% after shaving, so one way to be safer is to switch to natural deodorant after you shave.
WELLNESS MOISTURIZER Many of the most-damaging compounds consumers are told to watch out for are regularly found in moisturizers. Among them are “fragrance” or “perfume” (catchall terms for ingredients in scented products that don’t have to be individually listed, including phthalates), parabens, PEG (polyethylene glycol) and BHA and BHT (preservatives that are likely carcinogenic and endocrine disruptors). Retinol’s inclusion on some lists has been controversial and it is not recommended for pregnant women, but can be more safely used at night to avoid its possible hastening of damage to sun-exposed skin. SUNSCREEN Mineral sunscreens only containing zinc oxide and/ or titanium dioxide scatter UV rays when they hit your skin, sometimes leaving a white cast that can vary between products. The much more common chemical sunscreens include well-known hormone disruptors like oxybenzone and oxynoxate, which wash off your body and into water systems when you shower or swim, damaging wastewater plants and helping to kill coral reefs.
FOUNDATION This and the other skin care products you leave on your skin all day are particularly important to keep clean. The most common ingredients you need to watch for with foundation are parabens (linked to thyroid disruption, reproductive organ harm including cancers and obesity) and ethanolamines, aka MET, DEA and TEA (research is limited but links to allergies, hormone disruption and inhibited fetal brain development have been reported. SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER Researchers have had a tough time finding “clean” chemistries that clean, condition, scent and color hair well enough to be a marketable product, but their work continues.
58
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
In the meantime you can work at phasing out such harmful ingredients as the ones mentioned above, plus formaldehyde and sodium lauryl sulfate (SES), coal tar, EDTA and lead. That’s right, lead.

Essential Oils CAN PROMOTE
Elegance & Wellness
N
o luxury home is complete without the indelible scent of at least one essential oil wafting through the rooms and halls, spreading je ne sais quoi. But what makes an oil essential? Essential oils aren’t oils in the traditional sense, though they resemble them in the way they don’t mix with water. They are volatile compounds extracted from the aromatic portions of a plant such as the leaves, bark and roots, ensuring they will have the characteristic scent, or “essence,” of the species they were taken from. They and their exquisite fragrances and properties have been treasured for thousands of years for promoting healing, relaxation and spiritual communion, mostly through aromatherapy. Essential oils are powerful and must be handled carefully, heavily diluted with “carrier” oils made from nuts, seeds and kernels before letting them touch our skin. These carrier oils have aromatic and therapeutic qualities of their own and picking these out can be half the fun of finding the right essential oil formula for you. Carrier oils aren’t needed if you are diffusing an essential oil, as they are when applying essential oils directly to the skin. Sweet almond and olive oils work well as carrier oils. There are about 130 essential oils you can choose from, starting with agar and running straight through ylang

ylang, each with its own characteristics and properties. Given their resurgence in popularity, the market has become saturated with poor-quality products claiming to be essential oils. To ensure what you’re buying is a pure, completely natural product, be ready to pay top dollar and look for these signs of a true essential oil. • They should be sold in small, dark glass bottles, usually amber or dark blue, to protect the contents from UV rays. Anything sold in a plastic bottle isn’t a pure essential oil because the bottle would start to dissolve before long. • The label should include the scientific name of the plant it was produced from and such information as country of origin and extraction method. • Remember they’re not oils! Any pure essential oil should not feel greasy or oily to the touch — but touch carefully. • It should not leave any residue behind on paper after it dries — any mark left behind indicates the solution includes carrier oil. • Don’t confuse with fragrance oils, which are synthetic and have no health benefits.

Microneedling
Does
Help Acne Scars?
P
by Aymee Wilson, Owner & Founder, Wilson Aesthetics
imples and acne are undoubtedly a nightmare regardless of age. However, can you think of anything worse? You guessed it right, acne scars. Luckily there are cosmetic treatments and procedures you can undergo to prevent and get rid of acne and acne scars. The best options for acne scar treatment is microneedling and Virtue RF microneedling. HOW EFFECTIVE IS MICRONEEDLING? This is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive cosmetic treatment specializing in treating scars such as acne scars, burn scars, surgical scars, sun damage, melasma, sagging skin, stretch marks, hair loss and large pores. Microneedling encourages the skin to produce more collagen, which can lead to faster healing and a smoother, firmer appearance.
the reason why post-procedure care is essential to maintain the effects of microneedling. Microneedling treatment ranges between $200 and $700 per session. This depends on the condition of the skin and the desired result — the average total cost of microneedling is between $600 and $4,200. This places microneedling in an upper hand compared to other surgical and nonsurgical treatments. DOWNTIME Microneedling requires little to no downtime and recovery time. Patients usually undergo the treatment and go back to their usual daily routine after a day. Virtue RF microneedling is less ablative and less harmless compared to traditional microneedling — some patients are
confident enough to undergo the procedure during their lunch break. SIDE EFFECTS You must keep in mind there are still possible side effects associated with the treatment. Patients experience redness, bruising and inflammation, which are normal side effects of the treatment. These side effects naturally go away within a couple of days. TAKEAWAY Microneedling is indeed an effective treatment for getting rid of acne scars. In addition to this, you can also use it for treating other types of scars and even wrinkles. You don’t need to go through an invasive or surgical treatment just to attain the smooth, young-looking skin that you’ve always been dreaming of.
COST, EFFECTIVENESS & DURATION OF EFFECT Microneedling requires three to six sessions to achieve smoother and firmer skin. Once the acne marks are treated and gone, they are unlikely to come back. However, more acne marks might appear in case of more acne breakouts and improper care of the skin. This is VOL. 2, NO. 3 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

ew products fit as well into the luxury lifestyle as caviar, the most decadent of delicacies from the roe of the sturgeon of selected seas. And if you’re not a fan of eating the fish, caviar can still be a thrilling accoutrement to your well-being as the skin care product you’ve been searching for. The deeply moisturizing oil extracted from sturgeon eggs contains omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, vitamins and antioxidants that work together to lock in our skin’s moisture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, boost collagen production and protect us from UV rays (though it can’t replace sunscreen). It also fights the breakdown of elastin, reduces inflammation for those with sensitive skin or conditions like rosacea, is nonirritating and available at a lower price point than the edible version. And nothing feels quite as extravagant as this rich, ultrahydrating substance oozing across your face. You can even get facials where the roe is applied directly to your skin. But most users apply the extract in the form of moisturizers, serums and masks. Its heavy, luscious feel leaves your skin younger and softer, and some prefer to wear it at night

because they find it a little too much for daytime. It can be a game-changer for your skin health. However, it should not be used by people who are allergic to fish or shellfish. Also, if your complexion is oily or acne-prone some caviar extract products can leave a slick residue on your skin that’s probably the last thing you’re trying to achieve.
YOUR HAIR WILL THANK YOU, TOO! It’s less common, but caviar extract also is used in hair products as it can help fortify our follicles, repair split ends and may prevent hair loss while hydrating our hair and scalp. Just like with skin, those with oily hair may not get the best results from caviar-bearing shampoos, conditioners and serums.

S
o, your feet are looking kinda ugly. You’ve been working out, running between home and work and action. Your toenails are either slivers or swords. Feeling the calloused skin on your right heel rubbing with each drive you take makes you wince. You’d like to have someone take care of all that for you, but you’re a man. You can’t just walk into the corner nail salon or day spa. Can you? According to the most recent industry figures men make up just about half of all spa customers, in a jump of about 15% in the last 10 years. As awareness about the impact of stress on overall wellness continues to rise, more men are deciding to let themselves take luxurious breaks from today’s demanding lifestyle. Massages are still the service they most often request, but more are discovering the pleasures and health benefits of manicures and pedicures, facials, body services and hydrotherapies. Even though they’re looking to relax as much as women are, men aren’t as motivated by just the promise of being pampered, tending to choose their services based on the results they want to see. The services they’re finding to be spa-mazing include: • Massages — Men on the whole are more physically active than women, so it’s natural for them to experience more muscle soreness, tension and injuries that can benefit from some body work. Deep tissue massage uses high pressure to release knots and break up scar tissue lingering after an injury, while sports massage uses a variety of techniques to help athletes perform at their peak. CBD massage uses the titular oil to calm inflammation without sending the client out to their car smelling like a perfume salesman.
WELLNESS
• Hair removal — Men do have more hair on their bodies than women so choosing these services also makes sense. Whether it’s dispensing with those annoying back strands they can never hope to reach or take an all-inclusive approach for a cooler summer, safe and effective hair removal is a big selling point — as well as hair and beard shampoos and treatments and treatments to prevent or slow hair loss. • Skin care — Most men are relative novices compared to women in this area, so in many cases they’re more likely to look for professional help, rather than go with a home remedy. More are learning about how their skin looks, and how much better it can look and feel after a brightening facial or a microdermabrasion. Antiaging measures to reduce fine lines and wrinkles also being noticed by men and getting them noticed! • Mani-pedis — As in the aforementioned example, men are realizing the body parts they typically neglect need some love too, and in their case the pros are more able to provide it. Callus removal, nail trims, cuticle care, hand and foot soaks and quality clear nail polish are tying their look together and making them feel more confident in and out of the boardroom.

rizona summers can be hard on our skin, even if we’re not living with the brutal heat of the Sonoran Desert. The northern half of the state is still much drier than average, and mid-altitude communities like Prescott and Sedona do see days that broach the 100-degree barrier. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are at their peak destructive power. SPF protection needs to be our top summer skin care priority, but we can still keep our complexions dewy and radiant throughout the season if we support it with the right products, health care and nutrition. • This will be the final step of your skin care routine, but you must apply sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher on every part of your skin that will be exposed at least 15 to 30 minutes before leaving the house. Better yet, just wear it all day so you won’t have to remember to time the application just right. UV rays do penetrate most windows, too. You will need to reapply every two hours or so when you are outside.

• Use a lightweight moisturizer if you have oily to normal skin, but if your skin is on the dry or sensitive end of the spectrum consider a heavier, more nourishing one to seal in as much of your natural oils as you can. • Especially if you have dry skin, hyaluronic acid’s moisturesealing powers can meet their kryptonite in arid climates when the ambient humidity is lower than the amount
of moisture in your skin. At that point it’ll get the water it seeks by sucking it from the deeper layers of your skin, which can worsen dehydration and redness over time. Try using an occlusive moisturizer instead of or on top of products containing hyaluronic acid. • Drink plenty of water to support your skin and every other organ in your body. Eat hydrating fruits like cucumber, watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe and oranges to boost your skin’s moisture from within.

HYDRAFACIALS a Nourishing

Treatment for Summer
ooking for a treatment that blasts away all the dead and dying skin cells on the surface of your face without leaving you feeling like you’ve been worked over by a sander? Are you be open to having hydrating serums blasted into your pores as part of the process? Enter hydradermabrasion, most widely available as the patented HydraFacial regimen from certified aestheticians and dermatological offices. HydraFacials are done in three steps, each designed to accomplish two things at once.
CLEANSE + PEEL During the first step of a HydraFacial, the skin is gently exfoliated and resurfaced to uncover your next layer of skin, using targeted serums to remove dead skin cells. Then a combination of glycolic and salicylic acids bring the benefits of a chemical peel without the scaling that happens afterward. This is the most uncomfortable part of the procedure for the client, and it’s still much less painful than a microdermabrasion and other types of treatments. EXTRACT + HYDRATE In part 2, the provider uses a trademarked vacuuming technology and serum to remove

debris from pores, immediately following it up with another superhydrating solution that infuses those same pores with antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid. FUSE + PROTECT And for step 3, your new skin is saturated with more antioxidants and peptides to ensure it stays glowy and youthful, then bathed in additional proprietary serums tailored to you and your skin’s specific needs. Clients are advised to use HydraFacial’s Daily Essentials products to maintain results. Monthly HydraFacials are recommended for best results against fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots and oily skin.
CUSTOMIZATION Its five nourishing acids (the other three are beta, lactic and salicylic) can be left on for varying intervals and exfoliation intensity can be tailored to your needs, so the entire procedure can take from 30 to 60 minutes. WHO IT’S FOR Just about everyone — it works on all skin colors and ages. It can benefit nearly all skin types, but those with active rashes, sunburns or rosacea are advised against trying it. Also, the safety of using salicylic acid and some of HydraFacial’s other ingredients during pregnancy has not been studied.

aybe you can’t spend your whole summer traveling, but you can easily recreate some luxe resort atmosphere at home, especially out back where your space is more flexible and the sky’s quite literally the limit. Touches small and large can bring the serene, sophisticated vibe of the toniest vacation hideaways from around the globe, and rotating pieces in and out can make it brandnew every couple of weeks. Better yet, you can create additional outdoor seating areas, more intimate than the primary one you likely have at the rear of your home. These can be fenced off for privacy or opened up to the horizon. You can keep a cohesive look
or furnish them from different eras or destinations, whatever suits your taste! Remember these essentials for designing your perfect summer resort patio: THROW IN SOME SHADE Remember that Arizona sun is going to be powerful in the summer so make sure you’re prepared. An oversized umbrella can do the trick but may be awkward to deal with, so consider a mechanized awning with a sensor to adjust it for different times of the day. Oversized planters bearing healthy trees and shrubs can produce more natural-looking protection and add to the opulent atmosphere you’re aiming for.

Sofas, a fireplace or fire pit, ceiling fan, coffee table, rugs, and even a TV screen add to the lavish look while inviting family and guests to bask in the summer’s glow. An outdoor daybed with a roll-up shade can be a great poolside touch. can be calibrated to work with the natural light, or lack thereof, and whatever mood you’re trying to establish. A high-quality sound system that can play music with depth without being turned “up to 11” completes the scene nicely. CHILL IN THE HOT TUB No resort is complete without at least a few hot tubs for guests to share, and the poshest include one in each suite, indoors and/or out. Kick up the glam around your patio with an in-ground hot tub surrounded by a wood deck to slip into whenever the time is right. Ensure that it has an attractive, secure cover and
consider adding a pergola to add some shade and protection, though you’ll still want to be able to see the stars at night. FINE DINING Most resorts feature outdoor dining to some degree, offering a less formal backdrop that brings you closessr to nature’s spectacle. You’ll want to have a table on or near your patio large enough to comfortably accommodate your family and the largest crowd you typically entertain, space permitting. What’s more fun than enjoying a resort-like atmosphere with your friends without having to actually travel with them?

atural light is the secret sauce for most home illumination plans today. It connects us to the outdoors, reduces energy bills and makes us happier and more energetic. Uncovered windows can mean sunlight in your bedroom way too early or unintentionally entertaining the neighbors. These also can cause overheated kitchens and living rooms — especially in Arizona. We offer homeowners several options for striking a balance between these desires with our products. Let us work with you to solve this conundrum!
SHEER SHADES These lightweight shades often are the perfect answer to these competing concerns. The fabric used to make the slats is very versatile and can be adjusted with louvers to allow the amount of light needed at morning, noon and night. They’re produced in numerous colors and gradients that also impact the brightness of the light being allowed through. When closed, they diffuse the light to allow a soft cast in the room. WOOD SHUTTERS Since they’re solid, these coverings completely shut out the light when

closed, making it ideal for bedrooms flooded with light at inopportune times. They offer a classic look, and it’s easy to open them or redirect them to allow the right amount of illumination for every occasion. They can be custom-made for arched or rounded windows, as well as rectangular ones. DRAPERY PANELS These fabric pieces are cut to cover a window from top to bottom, either as one piece or two to create curtains. These are the most effective product for keeping heat in or out, depending on the season, and for keeping the room completely dark at night and the early morning as blackout curtains. They can also be paired with sheer shades for multiple design styles and levels of protection for your windows. MOTORIZE IT! Adding motors to your window coverings increases the luxury and convenience factor wherever they’re installed. These coverings can be adjusted with the touch of a button. Most can be programmed for different times of the day, giving you a hassle-free way to meet your natural lighting needs from hour to hour.

our home should be one big deep breath followed by one relaxing, calming exhale. It should bring you happiness as you walk through the front door. Design experts say you can make your home happy in how you use color, texture, nature, lighting and by de-cluttering it.
Keep blinds and curtains open to allow natural light to shower your inside living. Increase your productivity by re-designing your home office in a room with a view of nature, whether a strip of grass or full-fledged garden. And, spread the house plants throughout.
COLOR Choose colors that make you feel more cheerful and energized, such as yellow. Even purple and lilac have been shown to create a positive feeling. You might want to start with pillows, throws or pieces of furniture when considering happier colors for your home. Consider these shades:
LIGHTING Foremost, keep your windows unobstructed — daylight is a natural mood lifter. Strategically hang mirrors to bring more light into rooms. Beyond enhancing all options to bring natural light into your home, consider illuminating every corner of a room with table lamps or floor lamps, use decorative ceiling lights, but avoid cold LED lights as they contain harsh blue light. Your goal is warm white in dining and living areas and natural white in kitchens and bathrooms.
• Neutrals such as a clean, crisp white help make smaller spaces larger, while gray evokes feelings of relaxation and tranquility, especially soothing for bedrooms and bathrooms. • Cools such as a blue are perfect in kitchens and bathrooms to promote calm; purple is sublime in bedrooms to evoke feelings of sophistication and luxury; brown suits hallways and dining rooms; and green is a soothing and fresh color for living spaces and kitchens. • Bright yellow cheers up a kitchen or home office (orange also works well here); bright pink, the calmer alternative to red, is great for bedrooms and living areas; red, which symbolizes passion and can be angry, should be used sparingly. TEXTURE Sprinkled throughout your home, soft things translate to tranquility — plush pillows, fuzzy blankets, thick fluffy rugs. NATURE We know that being outside helps lower stress, improve our moods and help us perform better, so bring the outside in. Even fake plants lend themselves to a sense of well-being.
DE-CLUTTERING De-cluttering is probably the most loathsome thing you’ll need to do to get the big payoff of a happy home. But there are tricks: • De-clutter in stages — one room, one space, even on zone such as kitchen cabinets at a time. • Use five bins or baskets to sort — put away, recycle, fix/mend, trash, donate. • In the living room, decide on a permanent storage space for such things as remote controls, magazines and books. Store chargers, gadgets, and gaming equipment where you find them. • Before you even buy something, ask yourself: “Do I like this, or do I love it?” (Even if it’s a type of vacuum cleaner). • Make tidying up a daily routine — even if it’s just making your bed.

ach of us at some moment during our lives has found ourselves thinking: “I never want to leave this place.” Perhaps you were on a long awaited vacation, visiting a friend’s home, touring a new city or just sitting on a deck overlooking the ocean. Once back home, it is possible to recreate your experience and incorporate those elements into your home and lifestyle. As a very young woman, I was lucky enough to live in Switzerland. The natural beauty was almost surreal. Although I was ready to come home after a year, I have always kept with me the design elements of the Swiss Alpine region in ways large and small in the many homes I’ve since lived in. Think about what made you feel like you could stay there forever. You no doubt took many photos; look through them and take note of what affected you. Was it the ocean? You could create a water feature or spa in your landscape plan. Even if it’s only a small fountain on your porch, the sound of water is soothing to the soul. Few things are finer than inviting friends over to experience your favorite dish or adult beverage from that quaint restaurant or winery you visited. Perhaps you brought back a meaningful piece. One of my clients designed their entire living area around a treasured piece found during travels. Simplifying your furnishings first is the best approach. It’s a healthy exercise to let go of belongings that no longer serve you and start
fresh with your new ideas. What a breath of fresh air to walk into your home and feel as if you’ve just been transported back to that place you never wanted to leave. That special scent is a quick and easy method of time travel. Orange blossom candles bring me back to my childhood playing in the orange groves. After much back and forth, SugarPine’s new signature candle is ready for its debut. I asked Modern Luxxe to create my favorite fragrance — a walk through a wildflowerfilled mountain meadow.

itchens are considered by many to be the heart of the home, so it’s important to get the mood right. This can fuel overthinking, though, about kitchen décor — should it be cozy or sleek? Traditional or techy? Sometimes looking to current trends can settle such questions or at least give you a frame of reference while weighing your options. When it comes to color it’s easy to worry about going overboard if you stray from tried-and-true neutrals like stark or creamy whites, grays or beiges. But seeing the trends being embraced by others for their kitchens can increase your confidence with trying something a little bit outside that box. Here are some trendier shades that may work well for you and your family. • Pale greens — Green is having its moment in the interior design sun as the emblem of nature, new growth and related soothing feelings. Especially when it lacks the gold undertones so popular in the 1970s, green is being embraced by many as a color of the year for 2022. Mint, sage, slate green and similar hues are complementary to neutrals like gray and beige when used on the doors or frames.

FOR KITCHEN COLOR
• Powder or periwinkle blue — The cool, soothing color drawn from the skies above us has been used in kitchens across the decades, dipping into and out of popularity. Powdery or baby blues add country kitchen vibes to the atmosphere while the purplish elements of periwinkle, the basis of Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year, lend a slightly edgier vibe. • Eggplant (aubergine) — Anyone who loves the drama of a black kitchen but is still looking for a little luster will appreciate the luxurious depths of this deep purple; more elegant and decadent that its periwinkle cousin. It looks especially regal against white walls with gold hardware. • Citron — The sunniness of yellow has won it a lot more fans in the last couple of years, and citron’s location about midway between orange and green on the color wheel gives it an especially appealing earthiness. It’s becoming especially popular for base cabinets and wrapping around kitchen islands.

Top 3 Ways to Lose a Luxury Home Bidding W ar by Gwen Holloway and Elena Sanwick, REALTORS®, LUXE Real Estate Group—Luxury Prescott
he Northern Arizona luxury home market currently is highly competitive, with the average days on market often in the single digits. Multiple offers are now the norm, so it’s imperative to know what to do and, more importantly, what not to do to win the home of your dreams. 1. INCOMPLETE PAPERWORK AND/OR NOT FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS When multiple offers are expected, the listing agent typically sets a specified deadline for receiving
88
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
offers. If your agent submits incomplete documentation with your offer, or misses the deadline, the listing agent may not be willing or able to wait for your agent to get their act together, based on their client’s needs or directives. Something as simple as a missing an HOA addendum or the absence of proof of funds may be a deal breaker in a competitive environment. 2. SALE OF CURRENT HOME CONTINGENCY Buyers who need to sell their current home before closing on
a new home are at a tremendous disadvantage in the current market. Unless the buyer is offering a significant advantage to the seller in another way (e.g. a higher offer), most sellers are not willing to consider the additional risk that acceptance of this type of contingency presents. If at all possible, eliminate any contingencies before you submit an offer. 3. FINANCING VS. CASH Buyers who chose to finance the purchase of their luxury home face an uphill battle in a multiple-offer scenario, if a competing offer is cash. There are ways to strengthen a financed offer, however. A substantial down payment and a willingness to waive the appraisal contingency (adding to the down payment amount if the appraisal comes in low) go a long way toward leveling the playing field. Bottom line — the current luxury real estate market is tough for buyers right now! But if you arm yourself for battle with a local, experienced, professional full-time real estate agent who approaches each engagement with respect, knowledge and a winning strategy, you’ll soon be enjoying the home of your dreams.

ith energy costs soaring and concern about greenhouse gasses rising, many homeowners are looking to integrate “green,” energy-efficient features into new and existing homes. While larger footprints and lot sizes can require more resources than average they don’t have to guzzle nonrenewable energy. You may have to start from scratch if you want to live in a LEED-certified home (and many people do), but it takes just a few adjustments to shave at least a few toes off your existing carbon footprint. These concepts can do wonders in either context. • Smart devices — If your home isn’t already smart, it’s time to connect it to as many readers and sensors as you possibly can. They can monitor and conserve your energy and water use for you, as well as let you

IS ECO-FRIENDLY check data and conditions when you aren’t there. • Open floor plan — Some trend lists say this once-ubiquitous design is going out of fashion and there are reasons for that, but it does have several advantages where energy use is concerned. A relative lack of walls and barriers means better air circulation and ventilation and less need for lighting sources, in part due to better access to natural light during the day. • Window materials and placement — Proper installation of windows and using Energy Star-certified projects puts a huge dent in energy leakage. When you’re designing a new home or major remodel, making sure they’re well-placed to take advantage of
where the sun is shining during the course of the day will reduce your energy needs further. • Plant your yard well — Using beautiful, drought-tolerant landscaping that fits the surrounding environment benefits the Earth in multiple ways by reducing water use, being a haven for wildlife from the surrounding habitat and setting an example for how it can be done. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is the ultimate form of local sourcing — no need to transport or preserve anything! • Solar power — Some homes are better situated for this than others, but most houses can get at least some of their power from panels, and since larger homes need more power the savings are even bigger.
Greenhouses W DESIGN
Boost Year-round Growing
hile greenhouses in TV shows or movies usually set the scene for a tryst or, well, murder, let yours be a haven for growing vegetables in the winter, orchids all yearround or nurturing whatever meets your planting desires. And trysts are just fine, too. Greenhouses provide controlled, adaptable environments no matter the heat or cold outside. When deciding what size, shape and use you want in a greenhouse, consider light, exposure, foundation, proximity, materials. Materials: Galvanized steel is lightweight but sturdy, especially good in windy and/or snowy weather. You can use wood, but it must be pressure-treated lumber like cedar or redwood to resist extreme weather conditions. When it comes to walls, glass can be heavy and expensive, but film, while economical, is not insulating enough for colder regions. Rigid plastic may be shatterproof, but it retains heat — good or bad depending on your planting plans. Proximity: Where you place the greenhouse matters; against a house makes water/gas/electricity connections easier. It should not be near a pool deck. It should have a level path leading to it wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow. Foundation: Make sure you place/build your greenhouse in a level area where water

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 2, NO. 3
doesn’t gather. You might consider digging a foundation and filling it with concrete. Exposure: An overly exposed site can be costly to heat in the winter and keep cool in the summer. You want a placement that protects your greenhouse from wind, but you don’t want too much shelter or you may not have enough light. If your greenhouse is unheated in the winter, your plants can be helped by one or two layers of horticultural fleece during the night. Bubble wrap around pots can insulate plant roots and prevent cracking pots.
Light: Southern exposure is considered best for lighting (northern is likely to be too shady). East or west is OK. Keep in mind that many plants need six hours of sunlight, so while shade is good, too much and you’re need supplemental lighting. Your greenhouse can be as technical as you can afford or as simple as your philosophy dictates when incorporating these tips. Either way, the key to success might just be a reliable and accurate thermometer to monitor humidity and temperature.
