LIFE IN A OF LUXURY

Landscape

We are all blessed to be able to live in or visit the awe-striking landscape of Northern Arizona, home of the Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater and many natural wonders that are almost as impressive.

Forested mountains, ruddy rock formations, precariously balanced granite boulders, alpine meadows, placid lakes and tumbling streams are everywhere to be found.

With all of this surrounding us, it’s easy to think that our home landscapes can’t meet such a high bar, but luxury landscaping makes it possible to have something just as splendid in our own backyards.

Organic and inorganic elements are arranged and fused in ways that complement our home’s architecture and the specific environment where it’s located. Arranging trees, shrubs, groundcover and hardscape in ways that honor nature while providing cohesion and visual interest creates spaces with a light and spirit of their own.

Exceptional landscaping boosts our home’s value, but more importantly it increases our home’s value to ourselves every time we relax, work out, gather with family and friends or enjoy a moment of solitude in our slice of Northern Arizona.

Elevate THESE DESIGN TRENDS

YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING

No matter what time of year it is, people seem to crave more time outside. The right outdoor spaces expand your living space, integrate the interior and exterior seamlessly and welcome guests and family to your home.

If you’re looking to upgrade your landscaping and yard, or are in the designing stages, there are a few current trends that will upgrade and extend your yard’s usability and beauty.

For a secluded dining area outside,

consider adding tall hedges for architectural interest and beautiful privacy. It also separates your dining area from the rest of the landscape. Italian Cypress is a popular choice.

A kitchen garden ensures you are cooking and serving fresh, organic produce for your family and guests.

You can lay it out in a beautiful symmetrical design connected by paths to reach everything easily and add accent lighting. Kitchen gardens also flourish in raised beds.

17 VOL. 3, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living FEATURE

You might also want to consider adding a greenhouse to grow veggies, herbs or even flowers to adorn your tables. Modern, rustic and beautiful greenhouses abound to fit into your landscape and the style of your home.

For proper outdoor living, create an outdoor room.

Elevate the space from simple backyard furniture to elegant furniture, rugs, lighting, mirrors, etc. Bring the indoors outside and create a space to entertain or just relax that becomes an extension of your home.

Remember that lighting doesn’t just mean a few floodlights. Focused, direct and indirect lighting intensifies your nighttime visual landscape.

Bathe the space with soft, warm light to add extra richness to your pathways, patios, walkways and gardens.

If you want to have the coolest house on the block, add a built-in trampoline. These are not only fun, but they are a low-profile addition to your yard rather than an above-ground version that can block the landscaping.

This is the time to also think about adding game space for outdoor bowling, or a pavilion with a billiards table, darts and more to get everyone outside.

For a modern look in your landscaping, consider either professional sculptures or topiaries.

Original sculptures are not only unique to your home, but they also reflect your personal style. Topiaries can be a fun design element that offer a bit of elegance.

For a step up in sophistication, add an outdoor shower and a large tub. Surround with flowers, hedges or just lush furnishing. It’s a bit of decadence in vacation homes that is trending hard, so why not just have it right at home. Whether you’re in the beginning stages or you’re adding to your backyard, be sure it’s consistent with the style of your home so it all flows and works together. You want a smooth transition that compliments your home.

MULTILEVEL LANDSCAPES

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TERRAIN

20 Northern AZ Luxury Living VOL. 3, NO. 3

When you live in Northern Arizona with its spectacular mountain scenery, there’s a decent chance you’ll end up with a yard that slopes to at least some degree, making landscaping a bit more challenging.

Yet this is a great opportunity to use your creativity to craft a unique outdoor space existing in harmony with the environment that drew you here.

Adding stairs or meandering paths to the landscape makes your property more accessible for everyone who wants to use it, and building tiers into the landscape establishes flat surfaces for different kinds of vegetation.

Another principle of landscape architecture, layering, can heighten the effect and make your yard even more spectacular.

LEVELING UP YOUR YARD

When your property includes a steep grade it can take some work to make it more habitable for humans, but it’s worth it.

A flight of steps built with natural materials like stone or wood helps everyone navigate and appreciate the beauty of your yard without impacting the natural slope of your land. Under the right circumstances, a weaving trail can be a great alternative that shows off every part of your yard.

Using native plants and trees will help ensure your flora is hardy and easy to maintain, with root systems that reach deep enough into the soil to retain the soil and shape of the hillside, while rock gardens are another organic way to manage hillside vegetation.

Tiering your yard with the use of retaining walls can give you a more structured landscape and a great way to establish areas for vegetable gardens or flower beds, entertaining, play areas and other dimensions. It also helps make a small yard seem larger by adding vertical space and creating an impressive scale.

Tiering also can be the basis of exciting features and amenities like lawns, waterfalls, pools or hot tubs, decks, patios and much more.

LAYERING YOUR LANDSCAPING

This approach is gaining traction in the landscaping industry and can be especially effective on a slope. It plants the tallest and most visually impressive elements toward the back and side of the yard and de-escalates size and showiness as you move toward the front and center.

Deciding what should be the “front” end of your design can be more difficult if you’re looking at a downward slope behind your home, but in most cases layering gives a sloped yard texture, depth and structure.

Making two or three large ornamental or evergreen trees the anchor of your space and the main source of shade is usually the best start to making this sort of design work. Then it’s time to bring in some attractive shrubs, deciduous and/or evergreen, to step things down while spreading the heft of greenery and color throughout the space.

Finally, it’s time to look at ground cover in the form of plants, grasses and rocks to bring unity and completion.

HELP GOLF GAME & HOME VALUE Putting Greens

One of the most frustrating aspects of golf is that improving your game requires getting dressed, loading your bag into the trunk, driving to the nearest practice facility or course and paying the fee before you can even get started.

Consider how much easier and more luxurious it would be to have a putting green at home.

All you’d need to do is step into your backyard and onto the turf to hone all those short game skills like chipping and putting that comprise up to 70% of your shots. Just think how your game would improve if you added small sand traps.

The average residential putting green covers about 500 square feet, but they easily are customized to your lifestyle so you can find them anywhere from 100 square feet to 2,000 square feet or more.

Your dedication to your golf game as well as how many other people you want to invite to use it, should be the defining factors.

There are many add-ons to create a more convenient and sumptuous experience like outdoor lighting, storage sheds, water features, eye-catching flags and adapters for playing bocce ball, croquet and other games.

Beyond the obvious upside to your golf game here are additional benefits to including this amenity in your backyard:

AESTHETICS

Most backyard greens use artificial turf, which can hold its color and look fabulous for up to 15 years with little maintenance. Even in the winter you’ll be able to see and use this cheery reminder of sun-soaked days on the fairway.

Artificial turf also conserves water and the money you would otherwise spend on maintenance of natural grass greens. It can be a great solution for areas that don’t get enough sun to grow healthy grass or add more color to a xeriscape.

ENTERTAINMENT AND SOCIALIZING

The putting green can be a great focus for daily couple and family fun and a huge draw when you’re throwing an outdoor party for your friends and neighbors.

You can hold fundraisers, competitions, even tournaments, not to mention memorable watch parties for the Masters and other iconic televised events. Your invites will become some of the most coveted in your neighborhood and community!

HOME VALUE

Backyard putting greens are getting increasingly popular with all of the benefits they bring to the table, so they can earn you some money when it’s time to sell your house.

It’s not always a surefire moneymaker, but if you’re in a golf-oriented community like Prescott, Sedona or Flagstaff, it can be a huge asset to consider.

Patio GIVE YOUR A FRESH LOOK

We are spending more and more time outside since this is the weather we crave. But if you’re spending more time outside, take a hard look at your patio. If you haven’t done much in a few years, it just might need a bit of brightening and sprucing up. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

ADD SOME COLOR

A fresh splash of color can do wonders for a tired space. You may want to paint a wall with a pop of color, like orange or yellow. If you have a few basic tables, perhaps they could do with a change of color, or perhaps new bright versions.

ADD A FIRE PIT

That cozy, inviting glow entices everyone outdoors, and before long you’ll wonder why you never had one before. Think fun cocktail hour. And, you’ll notice how guests seem to gravitate to the fire pit after a dinner. Add a comfy sofa to make it more inviting.

PAINT FURNITURE, POTS

Don’t forget about your furniture or even your garden planter when thinking about adding color. A fresh color will instantly breathe new life into a space.

ADD A BAR

Bringing a bar into your garden is never a bad idea, especially if you love to host guests alfresco. Find one that fits your landscape and patio style and pop a few stools around it. Let the party begin.

ADD OUTDOOR KITCHEN

Consider a small kitchen for quick dinners or go all out and add a full kitchen with pizza oven and smoker. Whatever your entertaining and cooking style, adding a kitchen will bring the party outside in a beautiful way. Additional ideas include a good power washing to the patio to brighten it up; eliminating weeds and making minor repairs; planting bright fresh flowers in pots to add a freshness to the patio; and finally, adding shade sails for a modern look or even a few bright umbrellas for color and much-needed shade.

LET LIGHT SHINE ON YOUR OutsideSurroundings

Designed to improve the functionality and the beauty of your home, exterior lighting should be an integral part of a residential landscape. From wall lights to spotlights, outdoor fixtures can accentuate your living space and create safe and beautiful passages around it.

ILLUMINATED PATHWAYS

These add a touch of elegance and beauty and create a sense of safety and security on your garden walkways. The lights can be placed on the pathway edges or embedded into the ground.

By installing these lights on the floor of paving stones, you get an upward directional light that offers an elevated appearance with a minimalist design providing a diffused and sophisticated effect.

SPOTLIGHTING

Focus spotlights light on features that are a different height and texture, and you’ll create dimension to your yard. Be creative, these lights can be installed on the ground and on a wall.

WALL LIGHTS

Outdoor wall lights add style to your home’s exterior. Lights

placed along the walls of a home can draw attention to areas like doorways and architectural features and provide added security by illuminating dark areas.

COLOR-CHANGING LIGHTS

These lights add a party-like feel. You can customize them with colors to match the holidays or even a sports team. They are perfect for outdoor entertainment and create a romantic evening or a lively celebration.

STRING LIGHTS

These have been around for a few years but are perfect for adding a comfortable and inviting touch to your outdoor area. String lights are an excellent way to showcase your landscape’s beauty, whether on a patio or wrapped around trees.

WI-FI AND SMART LIGHTS

Now you can manage your outdoor lighting from anywhere and control the brightness of each light and even create different lighting scenes. Smart security lighting adds safety and security. The lights come with motion sensors, programmable lighting features and remote controls using mobile apps or voice commands.

A MAZE OR LABYRINTH

Brings Magic

TO YOUR YARD

Abackyard labyrinth garden, or even a maze, is not as eccentric as it sounds. They are not just for ancient castles in Europe.

A modest labyrinth can be a pretty way to decorate a garden space. If you have more space, you can make a true maze puzzle to solve. Either form brings something magical and captivating to a landscape design, but there is a distinctive difference.

For a labyrinth, you construct a continuous path that twists and turns until it reaches the center of a circle, square or a shape of your choice.

Maze gardens are more of a puzzle and contain branching paths. There is only one true route to the center with several wrong turns and dead ends. But mazes can also function as places for contemplation or to interact with nature.

A classic maze or labyrinth garden is made of hedges.

A maze in particular will have hedges that are usually tall enough that you can’t see the solution to the puzzle or the path ahead. In many farms in the fall, cutting a maze in cornfields is popular.

Hedge mazes can be scaled down to fit most yards. For a practical one you’ll need at least 30 feet across to work with. The maze shouldn’t dominate the yard, so if you can try to build it toward the end of the yard.

If high maze hedges won’t work, shorter hedges work just fine. You can even create a small maze or labyrinth with bricks or pavers, achievable in the tiniest of yards.

Determine the size you want your maze to be and then sketch the design on paper or with design software to get the correct dimensions.

If you want a traditional looking maze, level the ground flat before planting. Usually, hedges typically take three years to fill out. If you’re in a hurry, try planting shrubs closer together.

Be sure to prune your plants into the desired shape immediately and be aware that a hedge maze requires maintenance.

As the plants mature and grow, you may need to prune more often, depending on how crisp and manicured you want it to look. Count on continuing to prune the hedges at least once a year.

If you’re more interested in a labyrinth style, you might want to consider a labyrinth using pavers in different colors, pavers and turf, or for a beautiful alternative, mark the path with wildflowers and pavers.

It may take time for them to grow, but it will be worth the wait.

FIND YOUR FUEL FOR THE Perfect Fire Pit

Fire pits’ popularity has spawned a huge variety of choices — built-in masonry, fire columns, prefabricated bowls, fire tables with seating, tabletop models and pieces with globes, cubes or other shapes that double as outdoor sculpture.

But the most basic choice to make is what type of fuel you want to use.

WOOD

This most traditional choice takes everyone back to marshmallows and ghost stories by the campfire, and this choice has many practical advantages as well.

Wood is the least costly option and easiest to set up; firewood is easily accessible. Wood allows for an intimate blaze for one or two as well as a bonfire drawing people from miles around.

It does present some safety concerns, so make sure embers are as well-controlled as possible and keep a hose or bucket of sand nearby for emergencies.

PROPANE

Propane burns cleanly while generating considerable heat, so it doesn’t fuel the air quality concerns that wood does.

It can be used underneath gazebos, patios or any other outdoor structure, so neither rain nor snow needs to douse

the fun. It’s a safer way to cook and chill by the fire, even if it doesn’t have exactly the same warmth as a wood fire. The cost of buying propane tanks does add up over time.

GEL

Most gel fuels are made with isopropyl alcohol, which doesn’t release any fumes, smoke or soot, making it a perfect choice for indoor as well as outdoor use. It’s sold in 13-ounce cans that are easy to light and can last for several hours.

The biggest drawback it has is that it doesn’t get as hot as the other choices, so it may not be the best choice for keeping the frost at bay during late fall and winter evenings.

NATURAL GAS

Going this route requires hooking your device into your home’s natural gas line, a logistical issue that can sometimes be hard to surmount. But once that’s done you have an endless supply — no running to the store for logs or tanks.

hen looking for landscape designs that work with the Northern Arizona environment and not against it, you can’t go wrong with a rock garden.

The rocky floor of the spaces we inhabit supports hardy plants from delicate blackfoot daisies to mighty ponderosas and oaks. Plants thrive around rocks in the intense sun and biting cold of the climate.

Over time perennial plants tend to move closer to stones and boulders to enjoy the survival benefits they offer.

Because they’re so suitable for our region it’s easy to design drought-tolerant, low maintenance rock gardens to anchor part or all your property.

START LOCAL

Look for nearby sources of native rock in building your design.

BRING SOLID BEAUTY TO LANDSCAPE

Solid and stunning granite boulders, sparkling schist, porous limestone, smooth sandstone, glossy basalt and many other locally found materials have a lot to offer to your garden, both aesthetically and practically.

Native mountain plants like penstemon, columbine, aster and lupine are best for any wildlife you want to attract to your garden, and don’t forget hummingbird’s trumpet for a showy and effective pollinator magnet.

Cacti, succulents and grasses like Arizona fescue and blue grama also are great choices. Consider which colors and shapes will look the best with the stones you plan to use, and look for variation in height and texture.

CONSIDER YOUR LAYOUT

W Rock Gardens

Perhaps the trickiest part of building a rock garden is making it look intentional without letting it get fussy.

The rocks can be used to provide a tiered structure to your plot or as part of a more organic design when scattered in seemingly random fashion; either works for the rock garden approach.

Start with the largest boulders and rocks to define what you’re trying to do, whether it’s a sprawling simulated riverbed or small, raised garden beds. Fill in between with sandy soil for the compatible plants, then add the smaller rocks. Make sure there’s enough room to plant your greenery in a way that flows between the rocks without overpowering them.

NEVER TAKE A Bad Photo Again WITH THESE CAMERAS

Many people have become so reliant on their smartphone for taking photos, and so used to their limitations, that they can’t remember how to operate a standalone camera (if they’re old enough to remember when that was their only option).

Yet there’s nothing like strolling through life, at least some of the time, with a real camera in your hand or strapped around your neck, announcing that you take the art of photography seriously. A digital camera allows greater precision with your photography, and a luxury digital camera like one of these gives you the presence and confidence to get the best shot every time.

LEICA M11 — $8,995

This German manufacturer is more than a century old and is known for delivering rugged cameras with a premium look and feel.

The lightweight M11 is easy to handle and captures stunning images with your choice of 60, 36 or 18 megapixels. Its first-ofits-kind multifield light metering when shooting in rangefinder mode lets photogs pay more attention to every other aspect of the frame.

It’s a certified Made for iPhone/ iPad product with a seamless direct cable connection.

HASSELBLAD 907X

50C — $6,339

The delightfully boxy retro design of this product, hand-built by the Swedish manufacturer that sent its cameras to the moon, supports a modern touch and tilt screen and a brilliant 50-megapixel sensor with a tremendous ability to catch true-to-life color tones.

It’s compatible with lenses that are dainty to ginormous and has a large dynamic range of 14 stops for amazing contrast within a single frame.

SONY ALPHA 7 V — $3,899

This is one of the priciest cameras currently sold by Best Buy, and you do get what you pay for.

Its AI processing unit with deep learning uses human forms and other categories to improve recognition accuracy has a full-frame sensor with 61 million pixels and records 8K and 4K movies with efficient compression, all with a Bionz XR image processor eight times faster than its predecessor. Lenses must be purchased separately and can only add to the power of this tremendous machine.

CHICKPEA LIQUID (AKA AQUAFABA)

In Cocktails to Meringues, IS HANDY

Odds are, you’ve been taking one of the most important bartending ingredients and throwing it away. Aquafaba is the liquid in a can of chickpeas.

Believe it or not, this whips and creates a foam just like an egg white. Aquafaba is Latin for water and bean.

As an egg substitute, this is great news for vegans and those with egg allergies. Most bartenders would rather use aquafaba than egg whites for health reasons, and it has virtually no taste. Once it is shaken or baked, any smell or taste evaporates.

You can use aquafaba in any recipe that calls for egg whites — including muffins, vegan meringues or, most importantly, finishing off a whiskey sour. The ratio is two teaspoons for an egg white and three teaspoons to equal one medium egg.

There’s usually a lot of liquid in one can so freeze the aquafaba into 1-ounce portions. Then microwave for 25 seconds when you’re ready to start mixing.

CONQUISTADOR

• 1 oz Rum

• 1 oz Blanco tequila

• ½ oz Simple syrup

• ½ oz Lemon juice

• ½ oz Lime juice

• 1 dash Orange bitters

• ½ oz Aquafaba

Shake all ingredients first without ice for 30 seconds, then add ice and shake again. Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

AQUAFABA

WHISKEY SOUR

• 1 tbs Aquafaba

• 3 oz Whiskey

• 2 oz Lemon juice

• 1 oz Simple syrup

• 2 sm Maraschino cherries, for garnish

Shake aquafaba in a cocktail shaker for 30 seconds until frothy. Add whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup and ice and shake all ingredients together. Strain into an ice-filled glass and garnish with cherries.

CLOVER CLUB

• 2 oz Gin

• ¾ oz Raspberry liqueur

• ¾ oz Lemon juice

• 1¾ oz Aquafaba

• Raspberries for garnish

Chill a martini glass. In a cocktail shaker, add gin, raspberry liqueur, lemon juice and aquafaba. Dry shake for about 30-45 seconds to mix and froth. Add ice to shaker and shake to chill. Strain into the chilled glass and garnish with raspberries.

Flying Private

46 Northern AZ Luxury Living VOL. 3, NO. 3
“It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson

Your vacation begins as soon as you walk out your front door. This includes the journey to your destination, and waiting in long airport security lines can dampen that journey. The upside is that there is a pleasant and comfortable alternative for a smooth travel experience— fly private.

The convenience of bypassing security lines is a major plus, alongside the timing of the aircraft to your needs and the comfort to sit back and relax. Oversized leather seats with plenty of leg room, chef-prepared meals, clean rest rooms and personal waiters are just some of the luxuries when flying private.

If you are thinking about going private on your travels, these are just a few of the options out there for you.

CHARTER APPS

A number of apps now allow you to browse, book and buy within minutes on a few airlines. JetASAP is a free, self-service app tagged “Airbnb for travel” and lets travelers secure and book private flights right from their phones. Unlimited access is available from $79-$399 per year. The app boasts more than 1,000 bookable daily trips.

FlyJets operates like a travel search engine, letting you filter results by aircraft size, location and departure time. Booking options include full charters, seats on shared charters and group-purchases. Travelers can bid on flights without a fixed price.

TRADITIONAL CHARTERS

Charter companies work with dozens of private air operators to locate your ideal flight and manage door-to-door logistics, with no long-term commitment. Aero offers white-glove service on a fleet of 16-seater black jets. The company flies to Los Cabos, Mexico; Sun Valley, Idaho; England, France and more.

Wheels Up provides access to more than 1,500 aircraft with a fleet that includes planes like the King Air 350i and Citation X. With the Wheels Up app, non-members can browse and book one-off flights. Core memberships cost $17,500 plus $8,500 in annual dues and include guaranteed access to certain tiers of aircraft plus access to partners like Abercrombie & Kent, Hertz, Tropic Ocean Airways and more.

FLY-SHARING

Fly-share companies are the best by cost. Companies like Surf Air and JSX allow travelers to grab a seat on a private jet charter—sometimes for as little as $100 each way—sharing space with only a handful of other passengers. Additional perks include no security lines and departure from private terminals.

MEMBERSHIP PROGRAMS

Through tiered subscription programs, a monthly or annual fee unlocks access to an entire fleet of aircrafts that can then be booked on demand. VistaJet’s fleet includes corporate jets and the longrange Bombardier Global 7500, which boasts a bedroom and full-size kitchen. Membership options include a three-year private flight subscription for those who fly between 25 and 49 hours per year.

Set Jet is one of the most affordable private air travel options. It has a $100 monthly membership fee and one-way flights start at $750. The company offers domestic routes from Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County, Scottsdale, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and more. Lastminute travelers (members) can book a flight up to 24 hours before takeoff and grab a seat on an existing flight up to 30 minutes before takeoff.

Sleeping? ARE YOU

Most people older than 50 begin to have very irregular sleep patterns. They begin waking during the night at the same time, night after night. Getting eight straight hours of sleep a night becomes a distant memory.

One of the most common reasons is hormonal changes. Our bodies are constantly adapting to change, thankfully, or we wouldn’t live as long as we do.

Our hormones begin to fail us because our bodies don’t have the mineral base to keep building hormones. Insulin is a hormone the body makes, as are testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, cortisol, growth, adrenaline and thyroid.

Hormones are like messengers, and they are responsible for controlling and regulating the activities of certain cells and organs. They play an important role in:

• Development and growth of the body

• Metabolism of food

• Cognitive functions and mood

• Maintenance of body temperature and thirst

• Sexual functions and reproductive growth

The best way to keep your hormones on track is to have your hormones checked via a blood test every six months. It’s much easier to keep hormone levels in balance this way.

There are two ways to keep hormones at healthy levels — supplementing with synthetic hormones or supplementing with bio-identical hormones.

I prefer a doctor who has knowledge about both types of hormone therapies or replacement, and I also do my own research.

Another thing you can do to greatly help yourself is make sure you have a water filter system that filters out hormones found in our drinking water.

Today most people over 40 are taking some type of hormone, and they all go through you and end up down the drain to be recycled and/ or used on golf courses and such,

thus ending up back in our ground water and municipal water sources. Drinking or cooking with such water then contributes to hormonal imbalances as well as nutrient deficiencies. It seems an overwhelming task at first but a top-notch physician, along with a top-notch water filtration system, can be great resources to help you get on and stay on track!

A few other tips:

• Take a hot Epsom salt bath before bed.

• Drink herbal sleep tea.

• Invest in a quality mattress, pillows and sheets.

• Turn off all electronics, including phones, Wi-Fi, computer etc. in the bedroom.

Sleep well my friend!

We recently started a train journey across several countries beginning in Zurich, Switzerland. The central rail station is a wonderful artery within about an hour’s journey to picturesque Bern, cozy Lake Lucerne or artistic Basel. However, you may get distracted by the plethora of restaurants, shops and unusual sites you’ll encounter at the station. Hello lady carrying a spinning wheel on her head!

Zurich is a global banking center, and much of the city reflects its gold standard of luxury. However, as we previously had been to Zurich, this time we skipped the museums, churches and designer shopping. Instead, we concentrated on outdoor activities in that tiny window of time before the heavy snowfall and skiers descended.

A walk from our hotel within a block of the station led us to Viadukt Arches, an eclectic urban area created under 36 railway arches originally built in 1894. It is now home to boutiques, delicatessens and studios.

At the far end, and close to Limmat River, is the Market Hall — or Restaurant Markrhalle to keep it Swiss. We collected our lunch from one of the delis, but stopped to make reservations for dinner that evening. Fondue was on the menu.

Then, on to the Limmat where we sat in the chilly autumn watching the last leaves fall from the giant sycamores and linden trees lining the river. Benches placed along the Platzspitz made resting, eating and people watching a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

As someone raised around the warm Florida waters, though, I could only stare in wonder at the cold water swimmers.

If you’re there at the beginning of December you won’t want to miss the Samichlausschwimmen, a charity

event involving about 300 swimmers paddling across the freezing cold river.

After dinner we stopped in at Widder Bar, a piano bar between our hotel and train station that was a little quieter than some of the nightclubs that appeal to a younger crowd.

Zurich has a vibrant late-night scene that caters to all demographics.

Since many venues are closed on Sunday, we opted for a walk along the banks of Lake Zurich with the backdrop of snowcapped Uetliberg Mountains in the morning, again marveling at the nonchalance of those taking to the glacial water.

There is a promenade that borders both sides of the lake for several miles with dedicated lanes for bikers and skaters. Small cafes and coffee shops present an opportunity to fuel up after a brisk morning walk. There are many boat rental venues available as well as charter boat rides from Zurich itself, but we opted to get out of town and up into the mountains for the afternoon.

We traveled along the coast of Lake Zurich about 15 minutes to Meilen where we boarded a boat for a short ferry ride to the other side. From Adliswil we took a cable car up 2,630 feet to Felsenegg. And, although we took the ferry, it’s easy to get to Felsenegg from Zurich’s main train station. After we exited the car we took the path up the mountain for a 20-minute hike to the restaurant. Sundays are a busy time, so reservations are definitely recommended.

The following morning, we walked the short block back to the train station and boarded the train for our trip across the Arlberg Pass, through Innsbruck and to Salzberg.

Next in the series I will take you through the Alps by rail to Austria.

Your Personal Style

All of us want to look great in what we are wearing and stay up to date in terms of what is currently in fashion. The question is, however, how do you know what your own personal style is?

Here are some strategies to find out more about choosing clothing that makes you look and feel your best.

Look in your own closet. Find the pieces that you choose over and over again. What is it about those pieces that you like? Perhaps it is the color or the fabric that is appealing to you.

Our favorite pieces also are the ones that actually fit us and are figure flattering.

Seek inspiration! What catches your eye on social media or in a magazine you are paging through?

After some time doing this you will notice a trend developing. Make a note of this. Everything that appeals to you is a clue to developing your own personal style.

Create a wish list. This step is important for a number of reasons. Knowing what you want eliminates impulse buying. We all love a great sale, and getting a good deal on an item of clothing is always fun.

Finding that special item on your list also is very satisfying. When you do find it, you already have thought of all the ways that you can wear it.

Pay close attention to your accessories. Just like your favorite pair of jeans, we tend to choose the same necklace or scarf every time. Ask yourself why that is.

Even if the current trend is small and dainty with necklaces, if you like a larger statement piece then go ahead and wear it. This is another clue to developing your own personal style.

Remember being stylish is different than being trendy. Every season there are new style trends to grab our attention. Wearing some of these trends may not be in our own best interest.

When you develop your personal sense of style you will know what trendy new items work for you and which do not.

With a new season ahead of us take some time and evaluate your wardrobe. Personal style is unique for everyone, and it is very satisfying to find out just what that is.

Invest the time — you are worth it!

Wine Breathe? YOU LET YOUR

We all want our wine to taste as good as it does when we are at a winery.

There are quite a few things that can impact the taste of wine, including decanting and how long you let wine breathe. The idea of letting a wine breathe is simply exposing it to air for a period to soften flavors and release aromas.

Not all wine needs to be decanted, which is simply pouring wine from the bottle into another vessel slowly, without disturbing any sediment.

It becomes more essential for younger red wines that need maximum aeration, or older wines to remove sediment.

If you have a young Rhône red, you may want to decant to soften it. But for a sauvignon blanc, you don’t want to dull the qualities.

Still, most wines will improve with some aeration, either decanted or a quick swirl in the glass. Breathing helps draw out specific flavors and aromas.

Typically, red wines benefit most from breathing.

Young red wines high in tannins need aeration to make the wine less harsh. When you get to aged reds, they all need to breathe, including cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel and Bordeaux.

Some just pop the cork and let the wine breathe in the bottle. However, you’re only allowing a small portion of the wine to thrive. Instead consider either decanting, pouring in the glass and waiting, or aerators.

For decanting, any large container with a wide opening will do, but there are some lovely decanters out there to look lovely at a dinner party. Give at least 30 minutes to let the wine breathe.

You can let the wine breathe after pouring into your glass, just make sure you have a red wine glass with a wide opening then pour, swirl and wait up to 15 minutes if you can hold out that long.

Aerators are another option and there are many portable options. When you pour the wine into the aerator over your glass of wine, it brings more oxygen into your pour. Some attach directly to the wine bottle.

Wellness Retreat

OVER A RESORT

Sometimes, we need a vacation to get away from it all. Other times, that’s not quite enough.

When stress is eating away at our minds and driving us to unhealthy habits, or the demands being put on our time just aren’t sustainable, or we’re trying to find purpose amidst all our scrambling and struggling, simply escaping our day-today life isn’t the best use of our time off.

Finding a destination that can help us heal, learn and grow is a better alternative. It can be a little hard to find, however, now that every major resort has at least one spa and has expanded spa-adjacent activities to include yoga and guided hikes.

Here are some ways that wellness retreats are different from a more conventional resorts:

61 VOL. 3, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living WELLNESS

EXPANSIVE ITINERARIES

A wellness retreat goes beyond that to offer planned, curated experiences intended to broaden the guests’ horizons and are adaptable to different scenarios, such as inclement weather. They often offer multiday packages of scheduled activities contributing to a wellnessinspired goal or goals, including meals, workouts, meditation and spiritual practice, time spent in nature, cooking nutritious meals and other special interests. Most welcome individuals, couples, friend groups and families, but some cater to a niche audience.

guest’s stay and may remain in touch after guests return home. This personalized attention is a major component of guests’ success during and after a wellness retreat.

IMMERSION IN HEALTHFUL PRACTICES

Wellness retreat itineraries generally have a good deal of repetition built-in so guests can reinforce and retain the new, healthier habits they are trying to acquire. There may be time set aside for unstructured relaxation but meals, exercise, reflection and socialization with others on the same journey will likely happen at established times to begin building new routines to help you thrive in the long run.

ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

Some resort spas offer “wellness packages” that promise total relaxation and endless pampering through massage,

facials, wraps, soaks, alternative medical treatments and spiritual sessions conducted by practitioners that don’t require much from you in terms of physical or mental engagement.

These can be very relaxing, but a wellness retreat requires more effort on your part, and you’re likely to see more results.

WELLNESS RESORTS

There is a hybrid option — wellness resorts may or may not offer all-inclusive, regimented packages like the ones you find at retreats, but their facilities and activities help all guests have a well-balanced, satisfying trip, often rooted in the local environment and culture.

Along with accommodations, they provide healthy dining options, wellness activities and wellness-related facilities including spas, classrooms, trails and onsite gardens or farms.

These are excellent vacation options but may not provide enough structure for those looking for a “reset” or to transform their lifestyle.

ACCESSIBLE EXPERTS

Wellness retreats are staffed by therapeutic specialists who guide guests through the programming and advise them on how to integrate its suggestions into daily routines. These coaches or experts offer consultations beforehand, are within easy reach throughout a

Multimasking

MEETS ALL YOUR

Facial Needs

The human face does not cover a huge area — the average female face is roughly 5.5 inches wide and 7 inches long, with men a bit larger. You would think the skin throughout that surface would have the same qualities and concerns throughout.

But most of us aren’t so lucky. We’re likely to have some variation in our complexion, and those with combination skin can have a hard time keeping up with how our cheeks are acting up versus our chin versus our nose.

This is a particular problem when it comes to face mask treatments, an important component of any skin care routine to address oily or dry skin, acne, inflammation, pigmentation, fine lines and other problems.

But they’re generally designed to tackle one or two issues, which may not help us much. We can’t expect to put everything everywhere all at once on our face and have anything good happen.

This is where multimasking comes in.

It’s when we accept this reality and apply different masks with different active ingredients to relieve itchy dryness in one area, zap those couple of blackheads somewhere else and soak excess oil up in a third.

It’s an easy fix, once you find the right products to use. Plus, if you pick products in vibrant hues it can make for a really cool Instagram or TikTok post.

BUYING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

This will require a little digging, and sheet masks clearly won’t be your friends in this endeavor.

Broadly speaking, skin on the forehead and down the nose to the chin (the “T-zone”) tends to be the oiliest, while the cheeks and skin surrounding the lips tend to be drier. Almost everyone has sensitive skin under the eyes, requiring extra caution from time to time.

Those who see larger discrepancies within these near-universal tendencies have combination skin and are the most likely to benefit from multimasking, but everyone has points in time when one section of their face needs a little more babying than usual.

Doing this means having more than one face mask on hand, but that extra bit of shopping can be so worth it in the end.

For forehead/nose/chin — A mask with salicylic acid, clay and other actives helps manage sebum production and mattify the skin to dull any shininess.

For cheeks/lips — Rich, hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, honey, aloe and oils are going to make these areas sigh with relief.

For under the eyes — Skin is notoriously delicate and sensitive here, so use targeted products with emollients, humectants and anti-aging ingredients.

When you’re looking for three or four markedly different face masks to use simultaneously it might be difficult to get them all to line up in terms of how long to let them sit on your skin, but in most cases you can leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes before thoroughly rinsing your face and massaging in a little bit of moisturizer.

Probiotics, together with prebiotics, maintain the balance between beneficial bacteria and harmful disease-causing bacteria, leading to a healthier skin flora.

A body cleanser with probiotics can improve your skin’s overall health and encourage longer-lasting radiance, firmness and hydration. Probiotics boost the production of peptides, collagen and ceramides in your skin. This builds the elasticity of your skin, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Certain probiotics also reduce pores and have exfoliant properties that rejuvenate your skin.

Probiotics in your skin care, including probiotic body wash, also help improve your skin’s moisture barrier function and hydrate the skin by producing antimicrobial peptides to kill off the harmful bacteria and lysates to protect the skin.

By keeping the skin hydrated and your moisture barrier healthy, your probiotic body wash promotes lush, plump skin that can protect you from infections caused by harmful bacteria.

Unhealthy bacteria on the skin feed on sweat, oils and sebum on your skin’s surface, which can irritate the skin and worsen concerns like acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis.

Probiotic body washes can also improve your skin’s elasticity and collagen production by keeping the moisture barrier healthy and

balancing the skin’s pH, which is a significant factor in how much your skin barrier protects you.

Since a probiotic body wash works on the bacteria that live on your skin, this ensures that only the good bacteria stick around and inflammation is reduced. Probiotics can be easily absorbed into the skin leaving it feeling and looking fab.

HOW DOES

VirtueRF Microneedling

Work?

VirtueRF Microneedling treatment is the newest type of radio frequency microneedling. It has FDA approval.

This treatment does more than treat fine lines and wrinkles on the face, neck, hands and body; it uses skin rejuvenation with a combination of microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) energy to increase collagen and elastin production. It works on all skin types.

BENEFITS OF VIRTUERF MICRONEEDLING

This is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment.

The depth and frequency of the energy can be changed so each patient gets a treatment that fits their needs. For the right people, the treatment can:

• Produce skin rejuvenation.

• Get rid of sun damage.

• Tighten, firm, create more elasticity.

• Lessen wrinkles, fine lines, creases.

• Treat active acne.

• Fade scars from stretch marks, acne and other conditions.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO WORK?

Results are seen immediately but it can take up to four to six weeks to see the full benefits. More than one treatment is usually needed for most patients. Three treatments are recommended for the best results!

WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT?

Treatments are quick, virtually painless, and patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment. This makes RF Microneedling a great solution for men and women who want younger, blemish-free skin without surgery or downtime.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR TREATMENT?

After your treatment, you can expect to be slightly red. You will want to stay out of direct sunlight for 5-7 days. After 2-3 days, your skin will start to become dry and have a sand-paper feel. Don’t pick or touch your skin to avoid any irritation. Your provider will give you all post-care instructions and product recommendations for after your treatment.

‘ Hair Botox ’ Revitalizes

LOCKS

70 Northern AZ Luxury Living VOL. 3, NO. 3
YOUR

"Hair Botox” is an eye-catching marketing term for deep-conditioning treatments that can be applied by salon professionals or at home. The good news is that there are absolutely no needles involved, and they earned that nickname by smoothing out and softening hair with “fillers” like collagen, not to mention giving at least some recipients the same shot of confidence that others report from Botox itself. There are a few which even come with a fake “syringe” applicator, but it’s just for show. That said, there’s no patented hair Botox formula, so there’s a lot of variety in the ingredients of both salon and consumer products being promoted with that name, so it’s difficult to say exactly how anyone’s hair will respond to one of these treatments. What most have in common are ingredients that moisturize and strengthen hair, including caviar oil, vitamins E and B5, antioxidants and collagen complex.

They can also include keratin, but hair Botox is not the same thing as a keratin treatment, which uses formaldehyde or other chemicals to semi-permanently control frizz, straighten hair and add shine. It can be a good alternative for those looking for some of the same benefits without risking the damage that can be associated with harsher chemicals.

DIY OR SALON?

Hair Botox treatments are available for consumers to use at home, but they’re relatively pricey and don’t come with the same assurances you can get from a trusted professional at a salon in terms of the quality of the ingredients and what you can expect from them. Since there is no standard “recipe,” your hairstylist can customize the formula to your needs and desires.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR MY HAIR?

Users report their hair is bouncier and has more volume, frizz and split ends are minimized and shine is maximized. These results are especially noticeable on very fine, limp hair that has lost its luster. The nourishing ingredients may help fight thinning hair, dullness, graying and other signs of aging, though the overall impact varies from case to case. In some cases it may have a straightening effect, though it’s not going to last as long as with a keratin treatment.

DOES IT WORK FOR ALL HAIR TYPES?

As long as they’re from a reputable company, these treatments should not contain any chemicals or harmful ingredients and they are not applied with any hair-damaging heated implements, so they’re considered to be safe and effective for all hair types.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Again, this varies because there’s no fixed formula, but most salons estimate you’ll be loving your hair for two to four months before you’ll start thinking about going in for another shot. Many professionals recommend not washing your hair for three days afterward and then using a sulfite-free or low-sulfite shampoo.

Migraines WORKS

FOR SOME

f you are faced with migraine attacks, you may struggle to find treatment that helps. You may have heard of daith piercing, aka migraine piercing.

Located on the middle ridge of cartilage within the ear, the external C-shaped part nearest to your ear canal, daith piercing has become popular for those seeking migraine relief.

There isn’t much dependable research on daith piercings. Though a few case studies show the piercing substantially improved some migraine symptoms, much of it is anecdotal.

Some say it’s the only migraine treatment that has worked, others say it had no effect, caused an infection or made the pain worse.

The leading belief on why daith piercings may help with migraine pain is that similar to acupuncture, the piercing hits on a pressure point within the ear and changes the chemical balance in the brain.

This potentially makes certain people less prone to migraine symptoms. It’s well-known that acupuncture can be very effective for headaches, but the jury is

out on whether a long-term ear piercing has the same effect.

I Piercings for

It’s also thought the piercing relaxes the vagus nerve, which is connected to the ear, that can contribute to headaches. Or, it could simply be due to a very powerful placebo effect, where the person’s belief in the treatment brings real-life benefits.

The tragus, the small piece of thick cartilage on the inner side

of the external ear in front of and partly closing the ear canal, is also a popular spot used as a piercing site for more migraine relief. It is also thought to relax the vagus nerve, which is thought to relieve migraine pain.

Once again, only anecdotal evidence exists at the moment, although many people swear by it. Talk to your doctor first before heading in for the needle.

Wellness Room YOU DESERVE A

Wellness rooms mean something different to each of us. Think of them as the antithesis of the home gym; spaces designed with mental health in mind.

Wellness rooms invite everything from sound therapy to meditation to massage.

Usually, wellness rooms end up being multipurpose spaces. One could be a yoga retreat, a reading library, meditation space or a home gym/ meditation room. If you have the space, a wellness room could include massage tables and even saunas. Here are a few ideas to deck yours out perfectly.

Add a zero-gravity chair, designed to distribute your weight so comfortably that you won’t feel any pressure points. The unusual reclining position, which puts your legs higher than your heart, was inspired by the “zero gravity” position used by NASA to support astronauts during their launch into space. This position helps to decompress your spine, correcting the misalignments in your neck, shoulders and spinal discs.

Infrared saunas are all the rage for relaxation. They operate at a lower temperature, between 120 and 140 degrees, compared to a traditional sauna. Of course, you need a larger room, but if you have one you won’t regret it.

Just think how you could unwind after a long day or start your day relaxed after an infrared sauna session. Another popular wellness room popping up is a salt room. The walls, lamps and even the floor in some cases are all salt. After spending time relaxing, your skin will feel amazing. If that’s just too much, consider adding one or more Himalayan salt lamps to your wellness room for a peaceful pink glow and salt action. A wellness room is whatever you want it to be.

Add yoga mats, incense and pillows for a meditation space. If you love to dance, put in a dance studio with a wall of mirrors, sound system and open space. The main purpose of a wellness room is for you to feel comfortable and at peace in the room, whatever that means to you. Go big or just grab a corner of a room for yourself. You deserve it.

YOU NEED A

WhySCULLERY

If you enjoy entertaining, whether that’s large dinner parties or cozy cocktails with friends, your guests always seem to end up mingling in the kitchen.

Especially if you have an open concept living area, by the end of the night the mess in the kitchen can be substantial. You just might need a scullery area to take care of that.

Consider installing a classic scullery in your home so that while your guests are mingling around your beautiful main kitchen area, the messy business involved in dinner’s preparation is going on elsewhere.

The word “scullery” is Edwardian and refers to a small kitchen or room out back for washing dishes and other cleaning. Along with a butler’s pantry,

79 VOL. 3, NO. 3 Northern AZ Luxury Living DESIGN

sculleries were important features of English country houses.

If you’re wondering what the difference is, a butler’s pantry is a room off the kitchen where meals are prepared and prepped for serving. A scullery is a similar concept, but instead of cooking and prepping, it’s for cleaning and storing.

Some sculleries have ice makers, extra refrigerators, storage for appliances you use infrequently but tend to stay on the counter like that mixer and blender.

With a scullery, you have a separate room to store dishes and clean them. This way, your cooking stays in the kitchen where you can chop, cook and serve and once you’re done, move it all to the scullery and have a clean place to mingle without all that mess. Leave it until tomorrow if you want, nobody is looking. Adding a scullery will also give your open-concept kitchen a more spacious feel without a messy sink and dishes. And if you tend to cater your

events, a scullery makes sense keeping the clean-up action out of sight from your guests. More and more homeowners are realizing the value of having a scullery kitchen as a practical extension to their existing kitchen.

As you plan your entertaining schedule, imagine how useful a scullery kitchen would be. A beautifully designed scullery will bring great benefits and free up your kitchen to be the elegant living and entertaining space it was designed to be.

Rattan Furniture

R

IS MAKING A COMEBACK

attan furniture and accessories used to date a décor, but thanks to designers and trendsetters, it is now trending and warming up the look of homes everywhere.

Rattan is the material used to weave (wicker) furniture and more. The trend shows no signs of declining because it no longer is just for outdoor furniture — rattan has earned its rightful place inside.

One way to integrate this style into your home is to add lighting with rattan shades. There are many shapes and forms that can lighten a room and add a punch of style.

Headboards get a pop of natural beauty in rattan. You can go all

out and create a tropical feel in the room, or just add the headboard.

Rattan can integrate into modern, classic and many other styles easily. You can tie in the look with a lamp or chair if you like.

Adding a rattan chair or sideboard with rattan inserts can work beautifully with your existing furniture and add a finished, natural look to your home.

And don’t forget these styles are not just a natural wood look, some are in warm blues, bright orange and more. If you’re adding rattan outdoors, consider pops of color to brighten up your outdoor space while still keeping a relaxed and inviting look.

Not all rattan styles of furniture look like the 1970s hanging egg chair, although that is still a statement piece in the right place. Don’t worry if you’re not ready to invest in rattan furniture right now, try incorporating pops of rattan into your home with accessories first. Whether styled on a shelf or hung on a wall, such small details as a storage box, ottoman or decorative pieces on display bring a touch of warmth and texture into the space.

Remember, it’s important not to overdo it at first. Although it is timeless and it’s been around for so long, too much of a good thing is always a risk. Remember, less is more. Start slowly.

Here are five landscaping ideas for homes that will make your property stand out.

PERGOLAS AND GAZEBOS

A pergola or gazebo is a great addition to any home. They provide a shaded space for outdoor dining or relaxation.

You can install one near the pool or in the garden and adorn it with climbing plants or hanging lights to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

WATER FEATURES

Water features add an element of serenity to your outdoor space. You can install a fountain, a small pond or a waterfall to create a peaceful and calming environment.

Water features also attract wildlife, such as birds and butterflies, which add to the beauty of your garden.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Such lighting is a simple yet effective way to enhance the beauty of your home’s landscaping. Strategically placed lights can highlight trees, flower beds and other focal points in your garden.

You also can use lighting to create a dramatic effect in the evenings.

LANDSCAPE SCULPTURES

These are a perfect addition to luxury homes. They add a touch of art to your outdoor space and can be used as a focal point.

You can choose from a wide range of sculptures, including statues, modern art pieces and abstract designs.

When selecting plants, consider the climate and soil conditions in your area to ensure they thrive.

Swimming PoolTRENDS

86 Northern AZ Luxury Living VOL. 3, NO. 3

While considering new construction or upgrading your pool, it’s crucial that you keep your design relevant and on-trend. Otherwise, you’re left with a significant investment that looks and feels outdated.

If you’re seeking a bit of inspiration, let’s look at a few exciting trends in pool designs to get you started.

POOL AUTOMATION

Swimming pool technologies have advanced to full automation, meaning pool owners can control their pool’s features remotely. All you need is a smart device on a network. Emerging technologies even allow owners to ask their virtual assistants to turn on spa jets or dim the pool lights.

COLOR BREAKTHROUGHS

Your pool’s water looks blue because it absorbs most other colors. But why limit yourself to blue? Consider statement shades like green, or how about black for a more cutting-edge look and feel?

A pool with a dark color may also increase your pool’s energy efficiency. The darker the color, the more heat it will absorb from the sun, which helps raise the temperature naturally.

FIRE AND WATER

Fire and water features bring a dramatic effect to pools, making them a great choice for pool design.

If you want, you can run both features at the same time for a dramatic effect. Fire adds a sense of warmth and comfort, as well as a modern look.

WATER FEATURES

Water features are becoming more modern and are not just about spillovers and small waterfalls anymore. If you want to make a statement, think about a series of cascades, a multitier spillover with a moat or waterways winding through natural stone and vegetation.

What about a hidden grotto surrounded by waterfalls and flowing water?

INFINITY AND BEYOND

Infinity pools are not new, but they are more popular than ever. Multitier infinity pools are all the rage and looking better than ever. If you’re considering an infinity pool, think about a swimup bar for added style.

TANNING LEDGE

Sometimes called a Baja shelf, it’s basically a shallow ledge, usually just a few inches deep, where you can lounge, sip a cocktail and soak up the sun. These ledges work great with submerged furniture and work perfectly as a spot for kids to play.

CHLORINE VS SALTWATER

Saltwater has been trending for years and continues to gain ground. Although the conversion may seem expensive at first, over time the cost of chemicals can add up and you no longer need them.

It’s also much gentler than chlorine on your skin, swimwear and especially your hair. While incorporating modern ideas into your new or remodeled pool area, remember to think about its usability, your home’s resale value and the best look for you.

It’s an investment and an important part of your landscape and family’s use. Consider not just the pool but surrounding features like lighting, sound systems and landscaping to pull it all together.

Millwork

SETS YOUR HOME APART

Nothing works like millwork to infuse luxury and craftsmanship into a residence.

It lends an understated, classic feeling that anchors a room and leaves an impression on most everyone who enters.

The detail found in woodwork flourishes like crown molding, wainscoting, baseboards and trim. Wood inlays, paneling on walls and ceilings and carving on interior doors all signal a bespoke house and the care that goes into creating one.

Given the relative permanence of millwork features, they aren’t as trend-driven as other design elements. Still, some styles are emerging as top choices as they’re installed in new and renovated homes alike as carpenters, designers and homeowners discover new ways to give their interiors the ultimate finishing touch.

SHIPLAP

It’s been just a decade since Joanna Gaines let the shiplap show in one of her fixer-uppers and transformed it from a protective layer for home exteriors and interiors into the apotheosis of country and comfort as modern farmhouse became the ideal.

This makes the plank panels a relatively new entry into the millwork category, one that adds a layer of quiet sophistication to any rustic-inspired interior.

Some design style mavens have begun to rule shiplap as passé, but the classicyet-contemporary style is hard to top.

PANEL MOLDING

The use of carved wooden strips to simulate the look of wall paneling has endured for centuries and can create any look you want, from wainscoting on the bottom third of a wall to a complete wall covering or even across the ceiling.

It can be used on doors, stairways, fireplaces and in every room of the house to give it a somewhat formal appearance while giving walls a chance to shine rather than recede into the background.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

Sustainability is here to stay as a factor to consider when building homes or anything else.

Homeowners and builders value reclaimed and repurposed wood, as well as products sourced as locally as possible. Aged beams are being attached to new ceilings to add character and history and trim can be pried away from walls for use in new structures.

OLD AND NEW

More homes are mixing traditional millwork features with modern touches to create arresting contrasts.

Crown molding is spotlighted by track LED lighting and used to conceal wires and speakers, while exquisitely detailed molding or paneling can ground a room filled with modern furniture, when carefully planned.

ACCENT WALLS

Those who don’t want millwork to dominate a room but still appreciate its ability to highlight architectural features are gravitating toward accent walls.

Shiplap installed in a chevron pattern can draw the eye up to a vaulted ceiling, and molding or paneling hung in a traditional or contemporary pattern can set the tone for the rest of the room better than almost anything else.

Even a ceiling can become a beautiful accent wall, whether bordered by crown molding or highlighted by wooden beams.

WholeHouse

SURGE PROTECTORS

SAVE MONEY

Installing a whole house surge protector on your home is a smart investment for you and your family. It does exactly what the name suggests — protects your home against surges, significantly prolonging the life of expensive appliances and technology by as much as 30%.

A whole house surge protector gets installed onto your panel and acts as a guardian to your home. It takes any excess electricity and sends it to the earth, rather than into your home’s appliances and technology.

It’s a lot like a crossing guard redirecting traffic to a clearer path and safer destination.

This is very important to have because utility surges happen randomly to homes multiple times a day. The average North American home faces as many as 2,000 plus surges a year, according to the National Electrical Contractors Association. Wow!

Day-to-day, smaller spikes of electricity come from inside the house from the cycling on and off of large appliances as well. This will wear down the equipment over time.

On the other hand, surges that come directly from the utility company can completely destroy everything immediately with just one surge.

This type of surge can be caused by downed power lines and lightning strikes on utility equipment.

Not only do surges and lightning strikes affect your home’s appliances, but your computers and televisions too. According to the National Electrical Safety Foundation, 40% of all computer crashes and data losses come from power surges.

Whole house surge protection is not the same thing as a power strip you can plug into your wall. Though, it is smart to keep your devices on a UL listed power strip while having a whole house surge protector. This adds an extra layer of protection.

Interior decorating trends evolve less quickly than tech or fashion, but given how much it costs to purchase high-quality furnishings you’d like to know they won’t be cringe-inducing for at least a decade.

A few smart choices can inoculate you against this possibility if you choose furniture and other décor with timeless and classic elements:

When you make whites, grays, beiges and other neutral colors the basis of your décor they allow a space to shine without dominating it. They’re also a marvelous backdrop for more vibrant accents to bring contrast and drama to your décor.

HIGH-QUALITY FURNITURE

Investing in well-made pieces makes sense on so many levels — they retain their look and functionality for much longer, and because they’re built to last beyond a handful of years they generally eschew the trendiest designs in the industry.

ORGANIC MATERIALS

Materials found in nature have been used since humans first began furnishing their homes because of their strength, practicality and level of craftsmanship. The warmth they bring to the room is found in wood or rattan furniture, stone fireplaces and marble countertops, and also in smaller touches including clay pottery and natural fiber rugs.

MINIMIZED TECHNOLOGY

Given how quickly technology is shifting these days, it’s a good idea to keep screens, computers and multimedia systems in the background when you’re designing a room. There are many options these days for disguising a TV whether it’s hidden in a cabinet or mounted on the wall. Another option is to keep most of it in a multimedia room intended for family use.

SYMMETRY

The human eye appreciates symmetry, so strive to create balance in every room through placement of furniture and accessories alike.
