LUXURY &

Sustainability

GO HAND-IN-HAND

What do bamboo, old mattresses and fire

hoses have in common? In today’s world where sustainability matters, these three meet the test.

Bamboo is fast-growing, renewable and offers sleek furniture and home accessories. Saye’s low-profile sneakers use polyurethane recycled from old mattresses (and its packaging is 100% biodegradable.)

Elvis & Kresse fashions previously used red or yellow fire hoses into belts for that sustainable gift you're looking for. Your foray into sustainable clothing can begin in your own closet.

Using a wider brush, architects are designing homes that meet a lavish lifestyle while prioritizing energy efficiency, water conservation and being in concert with nature.

For the wine lover, study the differences between sustainable, biodynamic and organic wines. There’s more to discover about embracing sustainability in this issue.

We also help ease your long-haul flight by letting you know how to land fashionably and refreshed. First, ease your mind by using a tracker in your checked bags, handbag and carry-on bags.

Especially timely advice as you perhaps are planning to spend Christmas 2025 in London. Our travel piece on the wonders and magic of such an experience may have you asking for the gift of luggage … or trackers … under the tree this year.

Responsible FASHION FOR MEN

IS GROWING OPTION

While the responsible fashion market is mainly dominated by womenswear brands, that doesn’t mean menswear has been left behind.

Each year sees more luxury brands creating better menswear with an emphasis on sustainability.

Looking good doesn’t mean you don’t care about the environment.

The more eco-friendly your styles are, the more you can feel comfortable as well as stylish.

The following brands offer clothes for every occasion while keeping sustainable and doing their best to keep you looking good as well.

Levi launched its Buy Better, Wear Longer campaign in 2021 that encourages conscious purchasing decisions. The company encourages consumers to only buy denim if they actually plan on wearing it. Much different than companies that encourage buying new styles immediately.

Organsk , a Danish brand, uses GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic and recycled cotton, creating high-quality denim using 95% less water, 90% fewer chemicals and 40% less energy than traditional techniques. The company also offers a plan to recycle your jeans every year.

Community Clothing’s knitwear is knitted in Scotland with lambswool sourced from Z. Hinchliffe & Sons of Derbyshire. The company uses GOTS-certified cotton grown by Hakan Organic in Sanliurfa in Turkey and recycled denim by Isko, one of the industry’s most sustainable mills.

Harvest & Mill pieces are grown, milled and sewn in the U.S., supporting American organic cotton farmers and local sewing communities. The brand

ensures no dyed or bleached garments, reducing the use of water, energy and dye materials. By fostering different varieties of cotton, this boosts biodiversity.

Sheep Inc uses sustainable New Zealand wool and includes a scannable NFC tag so you can trace elements back through the supply chain. All wool is sourced from regenerative farming projects, making it carbon negative at the source.

Saye’s low-profile sneakers are manufactured in Portugal featuring organic cotton, bamboo, corn leather and polyurethane recycled from old mattresses. Its packaging is 100% biodegradable. Saye also plants two trees for every pair of shoes sold through a partnership with WeForest, already planting over 30,000 trees in India.

Allbirds is known for its use of natural and organic materials like eucalyptus, sugarcane and wool while all of their products come with a carbon-footprint label. The company recently announced the M0.0NSHOT, the first netzero carbon shoe in the world.

Pangaia is a hoodie brand using recyclable, reusable and renewable textiles. The company reports to eschew seasonal collections, relying instead on vegan, organic and biodegradable products. Worn by celebrities in a rainbow of colors, the hoodies are sustainable and stylish. Since it’s increasingly hard to know which brands are better than others when it comes to sustainability, visit directory.goodonyou.eco for a full list of brands and their rankings in the eco world.

EASE YOUR WAY WITH THESE LONG-HAUL

Flight Essentials

You’ve seen them in your travels — those people who look impossibly refreshed after a long flight. Stop envying them and read on for some of the best tips to make your flight easier and walk off the plane relaxed and ready to explore your destination.

Bring a large, soft scarf. This can be used as a blanket, folded into a pillow, shawl and scarf. Choose cashmere or a soft material. No room in your bag? Wear it on the plane. Invest in good luggage. Stick to the size requirements of your airline and find luggage that is lightweight. If possible, choose luggage a bit different than everyone else’s, making it easier to find.

Your personal carry-on is essential. Opt for the Longchamp or Tumi totes with loads of space. You’ll want space for smaller bags holding:

• A change of clothes. Even if you don’t intend to change, accidents happen — like delays, spilled drinks or a hot, sweaty flight.

• Essentials like a toothbrush, comb, makeup, face wipes, deodorant, hair clips and dry shampoo.

• A tech bag with your iPad, computer, Kindle, headphones, charger, etc. Most first-class pods have USB charging stations, but you don’t want to get caught without a working station. Pack a portable charger and cord just in case.

A travel pillow is necessary. Yes, airlines provide small pillows on long-haul flights, but these are good for your lower back. Bring a quality travel pillow with neck support so you sleep comfortably.

Noise-canceling headphones are a must. Most airlines provide earplugs and headphones on long flights but noise-canceling headphones will drown out everything. The difference is substantial.

Use a luggage tracker. Apple AirTags and trackers like them offer peace of mind. Follow your checked bag as well as your handbag and carry-on. Don’t forget an extra pair of glasses or contacts. You don’t want to get caught with a broken pair of glasses and no spare.

DRESSING FOR THE FLIGHT:

• Dress in monochromatic tones. Black or gray can be mixed and matched and look stylish. Add a pop of color with printed shoes or a colorful scarf.

• Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics that are versatile and stretch. Choose soft, comfortable but stylish clothing that won’t pinch or bind.

• For a quick upgrade on your way off the plane, pack a blazer to throw on. Rag & Bone and J. Crew offer classic options.

• For men, jeans, loafers and a cashmere sweater layered over a T-shirt make a comfortable outfit that looks much better than a tracksuit or sweats.

GET UP TO $30,500 IN TAX DEDUCTIONS ON A

New

MERCEDES-BENZ

If you’re considering purchasing new a vehicle before Dec. 31, consider the benefit of a Section 179 tax deduction.

This IRS tax code permits businesses to deduct the entire purchase price of eligible equipment and/or software bought or financed within the calendar tax year. If you purchase or lease qualifying equipment, you can subtract the full purchase price from your gross income. This provision is designed by the U.S. government to motivate businesses to invest in equipment and enhance their operations. Mercedes-Benz vehicles eligible for this tax incentive include, but are not limited to, the Sprinter Van, GLE, GLS and G-Class SUV. These 179 tax deductions benefit businesses that buy, finance or lease new or used equipment for their operations in the 2024 tax year, provided their total spending is below $4,270,000.

Let’s explore some of the vehicles eligible for this tax incentive.

The GLE SUV is a midsize SUV that combines a spacious interior with advanced technology, highquality materials, and a range of powerful engine options. It typically includes options

for all-wheel drive, advanced infotainment systems and a suite of driver assistance features.

The GLS SUV is a full-size SUV ideal for families and those who require ample cargo space. It features a powerful engine lineup and a host of premium materials throughout the cabin.

The G-Class SUV, also known as the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon, is an iconic off-road vehicle renowned for its distinctive boxy design and exceptional off-road capabilities. Originally developed as a military vehicle, the G-Class has evolved into a high-end SUV that combines ruggedness with luxury.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van is a versatile and highly customizable commercial vehicle known for its reliability and spacious interior. It’s widely used for various applications, including cargo transport, passenger transport and as a base for camper vans and specialized vehicles for outdoor Arizona enthusiasts.

BLOCK EFFECTS OF ON YOUR SKIN

TStress

he negative effect of stress on the heart is the most immediately life-threatening, but the misery and imbalances it causes can also show up prominently in your skin, making it all too obvious to everybody what you’re going through. Whether most of your interactions these days are at the office, at home or over Zoom, your skin can serve as a window into your body and whatever turmoil it’s experiencing due to stress. But attacking the problem from both sides can resolve your skin stress issues more quickly than you’d expect.

STRESS REDUCTION

• Learn how to turn to some quickfix stress busters that in many cases can derail its buildup before it even starts — plaster on a smile even if you’re not feeling it, get some of the clutter off of your desk. Even vigorously chewing gum can break its hold on you.

• Drill down into what’s causing the stress and address it the best way you can, whether it’s confronting a harmful situation or turning to longer-term practices like yoga or meditation when the stressor is harder to eliminate.

• If tension has found its way into knotted-up muscles in your back, legs or arms, try using a foam roller to draw more blood flow to those areas and release them into comfortable stretches.

SKIN PROTECTION

• Stress can cause our skin to overproduce oil by scrambling hormonal signals to our glands, but the breakouts that result can be quickly treated with salicylic acid, though it should be used sparingly to not dry out the surrounding skin.

• If small wounds on your skin are not healing as quickly as they normally do as a possible side effect of stress, try using products with glycerin and hyaluronic acid to repair your skin barrier. Add more foods with plenty of antioxidants into your diet.

• Eczema, psoriasis and rosacea are common skin conditions that can be triggered by stress. Follow your health care provider’s recommendations and use prescriptions to keep these under control, along with reducing the stressful environments of your life as much as possible.

DIAMONDS:

Diamonds have long been synonymous with luxury, but how they are formed — either by nature or in a laboratory — plays a significant role in determining their value.

NATURAL DIAMONDS

Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years, deep beneath the Earth’s surface. Extreme pressure and high temperatures in the Earth’s mantle cause carbon atoms to crystallize into diamond structures. These gems are then carried closer to the surface by volcanic activity, where they can be mined. The rarity and the natural forces that create each of these diamond imbue them with unique characteristics and history, adding to their intrinsic value. In addition, natural diamonds often carry a certain mystique. They represent a deep connection to the earth over millions of years, something that cannot be replicated. Their scarcity and the

EARTH SCIENCE VS LAB SCIENCE

complex process of extraction and refinement further elevate their allure and market price.

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

Lab-grown diamonds are made using advanced technology that replicates the conditions found in the Earth’s mantle. Two primary methods exist: High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). HPHT mimics the natural formation by applying immense pressure and heat to carbon, while CVD grows diamonds atom by atom inside a chamber. The result is a diamond that is chemically identical to a natural one. Though lab-grown diamonds are more affordable and sustainable, they lack the rarity and geological history that natural diamonds possess. However, the precise control over their creation allows for fewer imperfections and stunning clarity.

VALUE IN PERSPECTIVE

A mined 2-carat diamond of excellent color and clarity can sell for up to $30,000 in 2024, while a lab-grown version is generally valued at $1,750 according to Ken & Dana Designs, a New York City-based fine jeweler. Prices for lab diamonds have been falling steeply as their numbers increase, and they lose almost all value once purchased, so from an investment standpoint natural diamonds are a much better purchase.

Dance your Way to

ELEGANCE

IN THE BALLROOM

Ballroom dancing, with its elegant movements and rich history, has long been associated with high society.

Once the domain of grand ballrooms in stately palaces and homes and exclusive social clubs, it remains a symbol of oldworld sophistication, even though Dancing With the Stars brought this art form into the mainstream almost 20 years ago.

From the waltz to the foxtrot, the world of ballroom dancing is a journey into the past, when social gatherings were as much about formality and grace as they were about status. Today, ballroom dancing continues to carry an air of exclusivity. Lessons and training are often found in some of the most prestigious dance studios around the globe.

DANCING WITH SOPHISTICATION: PRICELESS

Basic dance lessons can be relatively affordable at $25 to $35 per couple, while competitive-level ballroom dancing operates in a different league. Private lessons with top-tier instructors in highend cities like New York, London or Paris can range from $100 to $300 per hour. If you're working with a renowned coach or former champion, expect to be on the higher end or beyond that spectrum. Many dedicated ballroom dancers take multiple lessons per week, adding significantly to the cost.

For those aiming to compete, dancers also need to consider expenses for professional-grade costumes, which can easily cost between $1,500 and $5,000 for a single gown or suit designed to dazzle under the ballroom lights. Shoes, too, are specialized, with high-end ballroom dancing shoes costing between $200 and $500 per pair. Travel and entrance fees for competitions are other factors.

EARN YOUR PRESTIGE

For many, ballroom dancing isn’t just a hobby — it’s a reflection of refinement and dedication. Ballroom dance events often serve as social occasions where dancers, as well as onlookers, come together to appreciate the art of movement. Many luxury lifestyle clubs and exclusive resorts feature ballroom dancing as a part of their cultural offerings, ensuring that those who master the art find themselves mingling among like-minded connoisseurs of tradition and grace.

SUSTAINABILITY, THE BESPOKE, DIGITAL ASSETS ON

Luxury Horizon A

s we approach 2025, the luxury market is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by shifting consumer preferences, sustainability and technological advancements. From luxury fashion to high-end travel, brands are adapting to the evolving demands of modern, affluent consumers.

Here are the trends shaping the future of luxury:

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is no longer an option in the luxury world — it's a core value. By 2025, luxury consumers will increasingly prioritize brands that champion eco-friendly practices, ethical sourcing and transparency. The rise of sustainable luxury goods, such as eco-conscious fashion, electric luxury cars and responsibly sourced diamonds will redefine the meaning of exclusivity.

The ability to tell a story of sustainability will be as important as the product itself.

PERSONALIZATION AND BESPOKE EXPERIENCES

As technology advances, so does demand for hyper-personalized experiences. Whether it’s customdesigned haute couture or bespoke beauty products, consumers are seeking individualized experiences. By 2025, artificial intelligence and data analytics will enable brands to deliver personalization at an unprecedented scale, tailoring

products and services to meet the exact preferences of each client.

DIGITAL-PHYSICAL FUSION

The boundaries between digital and physical luxury experiences are rapidly blurring. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) will revolutionize how consumers shop, allowing them to explore digital showrooms and attend virtual fashion shows from anywhere in the world. Luxury brands also will expand their presence in the metaverse, offering digital assets such as virtual fashion and high-end NFTs. By 2025, owning a luxury item can mean possessing a physical product and its digital twin.

WELLNESS AND LUXURY MERGE

The concept of luxury will increasingly encompass well-being and holistic

health. From wellness-focused travel experiences to high-tech skin care, the affluent consumer of 2025 will invest heavily in products and services that enhance both physical and mental health. Luxury spas, wellness resorts and tech-driven fitness programs will see significant growth as health becomes a primary marker of wealth.

RESALE AND CIRCULAR FASHION

Luxury resale markets are booming, becoming part of the luxury ecosystem. Consumers will seek investment pieces that not only hold value but can be resold or upcycled. Circular fashion will become a key trend, with luxury brands offering repair, recycling and resale programs, giving a second life to high-end goods.

Just like your business conveys a modern and professional image, so should your marketing materials.

ELEVATED LEARN LITTLE-KNOWN ETIQUETTE FOR Fine Dining

Fine dining is not just about exquisite food; it’s an experience that combines culinary excellence with impeccable manners. While many are familiar with basic table etiquette, there are several lesser-known rules that can elevate your experience, allowing you to blend seamlessly into any luxurious setting.

NAPKIN PROTOCOL

Most diners know to place their napkin on their lap, but few realize the nuances of napkin etiquette. When you first sit down, place the napkin on your lap immediately — not when food arrives. If you need to excuse yourself, gently place your napkin on your chair. At the end of the meal, the napkin should be placed loosely to the left of your plate — never folded neatly or placed on the plate itself, as this could indicate to the staff that you didn’t enjoy your meal.

PASSING ITEMS AROUND THE TABLE

When dining with a group, it’s polite to offer bread or condiments to others before serving yourself. Always pass these items to your right, keeping the flow of service smooth, unless the person who requested it is seated one or two chairs to the left. If someone asks for salt, always pass the salt and pepper together, even if only one was requested, as this maintains the tradition of treating them as a pair.

HOLDING A WINE GLASS

In fine dining, the way you hold your wine glass matters. For white wine and Champagne, always hold the

glass by the stem to avoid warming the drink with your hand. For red wine, while it's more acceptable to hold the bowl, particularly for aeration purposes. In formal settings, it’s still preferred to use the stem to maintain a clean, smudge-free glass.

HANDLING CUTLERY PROPERLY

Once utensils are picked up, they should never touch the table again during the meal. If you are pausing during your meal, place your fork and knife in a “resting” position on your plate — crossed or in an inverted V with the fork’s tines facing down. At the end of the meal, place your utensils side by side, diagonally across the plate, with handles facing 4 o’clock and the blades or tines at 10 o’clock. This signals the staff that you’ve finished eating.

TASTING YOUR WINE

When presented with a bottle of wine, the host is traditionally offered a small taste. This isn’t to check if they like the wine but to ensure it hasn’t gone bad. A simple sniff and sip is all that’s needed. If the wine is good, they nod to the server to pour for the rest of the table. Avoid any dramatic swirling or sniffing; subtlety is key.

CONVERSATION ETIQUETTE

Engage in polite conversation, but be mindful of when food is being served or cleared. Pause conversations briefly to acknowledge the staff’s presence, and avoid speaking with your mouth full.

Local Farm-to-table Food

IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY

We often think of luxurious dining as being based on the use of the finest imported ingredients, whether it’s Kobe beef from Japan, Iberico Ham from Spain, sturgeon caviar from the Caspian Sea or Alba truffles from Italy.

But for dining that offers the ultimate in nutrition as well as deliciousness, look for a farmto-table event or restaurant that serves the freshest food in stunning settings. The nutrients will be whole, the flavors will be delightful and the ambiance will be splendid.

There’s no formal definition of farm-to-table service, but it can include meals served on the farm where the ingredients were grown and restaurants that list the growers where they get their produce.

Here’s a sampling of Northern Arizona options to get the freshest meals in the most impressive of surroundings:

GREATER PRESCOTT

Mortimer Farms — This working farm in Dewey-Humboldt offers the purest form of the farm-to-table philosophy, with monthly dinners showcasing crops harvested from its fields and served outside. Each dinner is curated to highlight the freshest seasonal produce grown by its staff and prepared and plated

by its kitchen staff. The cost is $100 per person and reservations are required, as tickets are sold out months in advance to foodies from across the state. The final dinner of 2024 will be Dec. 7; check www. mortimerfarmsaz. com/FarmtoTable for 2025 dates.

SEDONA

Restaurant Forty1 — Housed in Ambiente, one of the newest and most exclusive of this town’s storied resorts, this kitchen is led by Chef David Duncan, who is dedicated to crafting mouth-watering recipes from local ingredients that serve up the indigenous flavors of the Verde Valley. The unforgettable Southwestinspired meals served in the posh environment include taste of spring salad, a seasonal soup, elk back strap and copper state ranch filet. www.ambientesedona.com/dine

FLAGSTAFF

Brix — This stalwart of the ascendant Flagstaff foodie scene draws the

components of its singular cuisine from the farms and ranches of Northern Arizona and the Four Corners region. The menu at this eclectic, industrial space offers one-of-a-kind dishes like smoked elk tataki and bison meatballs. It’s complemented by a stellar wine list and the owners also own Proper Meats + Provisions, Arizona’s first local, whole animal butcher shop. www.brixflagstaff.com

Silk Pillowcases

SMAKE SLEEP MORE BEAUTIFUL

leeping is one of the best things you can do for yourself, but sometimes it’s not the greatest thing for your hair. All too often you wake up with a nasty case of bed head or frizz. One of the best ways out of this jam is to slip a silk case over your

pillow. Their luxuriously smooth and frictionless surface benefits not just your hair but your skin, too. They’re not quite a cureall, but they can help you gain the upper hand while beautysleeping the night away.

SMOOTHER HAIR

Linen pillowcases may seem completely smooth, but their texture is not. They have tiny ridges and snags that can tug at your hair and create friction or sometimes even static cling.

This is why you wake up with annoying frizz, nasty tangles and breakage that leaves you looking anything but chic and sexy when you arise. Silk is, well, silky smooth, and creates none of this resistance to your lustrous locks.

FEWER WRINKLES, SHORT- AND LONG-TERM

Silk cases also give your skin smooth sailing for the eight hours you spend asleep, without the deep wrinkling and tugging that can create large, temporary creases in your skin and contribute to fine lines and wrinkles over time.

HYDRATES HAIR AND SKIN

It turns out those who can feel their expensive skin and hair care products soaking into their cotton pillowcases are onto something. Silk is much less absorbent than linen and is much better at leaving your serums and moisturizers right where you want them, replenishing your strands and skin cells. Silk pillowcases are available in varying levels of quality and thickness, which do affect the beauty benefits you will reap from them. But you don’t have to shell out for the topof-the-line silk to get results.

Silk’s equivalent to thread count is “momme,” abbreviated as mm. This is a Japanese measurement of weight, and a higher momme indicates a heavier, more densely woven fabric. Pillowcases rated anywhere from 13 to 19 mm are more affordable and have all the qualities you’re looking for in a silk pillowcase, while the highestend are rated 22 to 25 mm and will have the smoothest texture and the least absorbency.

Sustainable Fashion: D

MORE THAN A TREND

id you know that the fashion industry produces 100 billion garments a year and 87% (or 40 million tons) end up in a landfill? Once these items are in a landfill they are incinerated and end up polluting the air. Most clothing is manufactured with highly toxic dyes that are flushed into our streams and rivers creating unhealthy conditions for wildlife.

Because of these disturbing factors, there is a movement within the fashion industry toward sustainable fashion. This concept refers to fashion that is ecologically and socially responsible. More clothing manufacturers are embracing this idea, and now you can find these brands becoming more popular with consumers. Sustainable fashion moves away from “fast fashion,” which is a method of mass-producing trendy styles using low-quality material. Sustainable fashion focuses on creating longer-lasting, high-quality clothing from renewable or reusable materials.

WHY IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION A GOOD IDEA?

Simply put, sustainable fashion reduces waste. Instead of ending up in a landfill, a sustainable item of clothing has a longer life cycle. Manufacturers are able to make leggings, sneakers and even handbags out of plastic

bottles. Other fashion brands use discarded textiles and make garments out of cashmere scraps and other discarded materials. It uses less energy. Sustainable fashion covers the entire supply chain and uses solar powered factories and other “green” solutions to reduce their carbon footprint. Sustainable fashion is cruelty-free. Most of the raw materials use materials from plants instead of animals.

Designers now use vegan leather for jackets, handbags and pants. Some of these items are indistinguishable from items made from animals! How can you shop for sustainable fashion? Stop into your local clothing boutiques. They can tell you about the garments you are purchasing and guide you toward sustainable brands. Shopping local also is a great way to support the economy.

Christmas in London

IS MAGIC

Each holiday season, London is transformed into a sparkling winter wonderland. From dazzling Christmas lights to world-class theater, London is bursting with holiday cheer.

The pubs are cozy and packed as fireplaces flicker within the city’s grand hotels and lively restaurants. From the classic angels floating over Regent Street to the themed displays at Harrods, a trip to London over the holidays never disappoints.

I was lucky enough to spend 10 days in London with my partner over the holidays and left charmed and in love with the city more than ever.

Choosing a hotel is difficult since so many pull out all the stops. Claridge’s, in the heart of London, is a renowned hotel magically transformed each year courtesy of celebrated designers. The Christmas tree in 2023, courtesy of Louis Vuitton, featured a magnificent creation with two large open wardrobe trunks towering on top of each other at just over 17 feet.

Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard gives you a chance to stay high above London in an iconic building with spectacular views. Last year’s theme was Enchanted Wonders, featuring an enormous tree with elaborate decorations.

The best-known Christmas lights are on Regent Street, Oxford Street, Covent Garden and Carnaby. Bundle up and walk in a lovely wonderland.

Just in case, don’t forget an umbrella. We were hit with a little rain just about every day during our stay, but it’s never enough to put a damper on the festivities.

Find a pub along the way if you get a chill and warm up with a pint or two. There’s no shortage of pubs wherever you are.

Fortnum & Mason is more than just a fantastic store. It offers a decadent, festive tea that is quintessentially British. Sit in the Diamond Jubilee Tea room sipping Champagne, enjoying pastries and delightful sandwiches. Just be sure and book ahead.

No one does timeless indulgence quite like Harrods. In their tearoom, you’ll enjoy a tiered selection of mini sandwiches and delicious pastries including gingerbread and raspberry Linzer tarts with crème Chantilly.

And make sure to do some shopping while at Harrods. They go all out when it comes to decorations and celebrations. On our visit, decorations by Christian Dior wrapped the building in huge twinkling snowflakes and crystals. We booked ahead for the tour about his life and history, and it was magical.

Visit a museum — there are too many to name. All are interesting. If you can, find a small museum like the Sir John Soane Museum to get an intimate glimpse of the city’s history.

TURN ANY MEAL

INTO A

Work of Art

It doesn’t matter if you’ve worked all day on a gourmet meal or threw together a weeknight dinner on the run, how you plate that dish is just as important as the food itself.

One of the appeals to a meal out at an upscale restaurant is the time and attention on plating. Visual appeal is a joy before even taking a bite. Thoughtfully and intentionally plating your dish can elevate the enjoyment of that meal. You’ve just transformed an ordinary dish into a work of culinary art.

Achieving balance and contrast is vital. Consider the textures, colors, flavors and temperatures. For example, a tender steak with crispy Brussels sprouts or bright, fresh vegetables with natural elements.

If you’re using sauces, consider the colors. Add pops of color with edible flowers, herbs or reductions. While deciding on the menu, think about the color palette while showcasing the freshness, flavors and variety of ingredients.

Now, treat your plate as a canvas and get creative.

Experiment with shapes, angles and arrangements before finalizing your masterpiece. Use negative space to draw attention to the main attraction, and include artistic techniques like drizzling sauces, scattering microgreens or stacking for height and geometric appeal.

Utensils and tableware also are essential components. Follow the theme of your meal and plan with that in mind, whether it’s elegant or casual. Play with shapes, sizes and textures.

Although our first instinct is to pile on the food, pay attention to portion size. Less is more, so don’t overcrowd the plate. Consider size of the plate, size of each component and overall theme of the meal. Go for a clean, minimalist look.

A few final checks for a visually appealing and enjoyable meal are simple but vital. Clear off any spills or smudges on the plate. And although you want to design just right, serve dishes in a timely manner so hot is hot and cold is cold. Don’t agonize over plating so much that you lose optimal temperatures.

Peace of Mind

WHILE

Traveling

You may be uncertain whether to pack valuable or delicate jewelry when you travel, but there are bound to be occasions when you’ll feel a bit naked without your favorite pieces — formal dinners, family reunions, weddings, club-hopping, shopping in high-end districts. Traveling with valuable jewelry requires careful planning to ensure its safety while still enjoying the elegance it brings to your wardrobe. Here’s how to travel with your jewelry while keeping it safe and accessible.

INVEST IN A QUALITY TRAVEL JEWELRY CASE

When traveling with fine jewelry, proper storage is key to preventing damage. A high-quality travel jewelry case with padded compartments will keep your pieces secure, organized and tangle-free. Look for a case with individual slots for rings, necklaces and earrings to avoid scratching or tangling. Many luxury brands offer beautiful travel jewelry cases crafted from premium materials like leather or suede, adding a touch of sophistication to your packing routine.

BE SELECTIVE WITH WHAT YOU BRING

While it may be tempting to bring your entire jewelry collection, it’s wise to be selective. Go with versatile, classic

pieces that can be styled with multiple outfits. A statement necklace, a pair of diamond studs and a timeless bracelet can easily elevate your wardrobe while keeping your packing light. Consider leaving your most valuable or sentimental pieces at home if they aren’t essential for your trip, reducing the risk of loss or theft.

KEEP JEWELRY IN YOUR CARRY-ON AND SAFE

Always carry your jewelry with you in your carry-on luggage, never in your checked bags. Checked luggage is more susceptible to being lost, delayed or mishandled, increasing the risk of theft or damage. Keeping your jewelry in your personal bag ensures that your precious pieces are within reach and under your control. Store it in the hotel safe once you reach your destination.

CONSIDER INSURANCE

If you frequently travel with high-value jewelry, it’s worth investing in jewelry insurance. This will provide peace of mind knowing that if something unfortunate happens, your jewelry is covered for loss, damage or theft.

“Where there is no wine, there is no love.”
Euripides

Wine can be

WSUSTAINABLE, BIODYNAMIC OR ORGANIC

inemaking (and probably the first hangover) date back about 8,000 years ago. That’s 3,000 years before the first pyramid in Egypt.

These early wines were the juice of crushed grapes fermented with natural yeast. Unfortunately, it had to be consumed within a few months before it tasted like vinegar.

Later, winemakers as early as 753 B.C. tried preserving wine with additives like olive oil, sea water and resin. Even today, many winemakers filter their wines with bentonite clay, gelatin, albumin from egg whites, casein and a white gelatin made from fish air bladder.

But as oenophiles become more health conscious, the global organic wine market flourishes. It topped out at $10.80 billion in 2023 and continues growing. Even actor Cameron Diaz has thrown her hat in the ring with a wine called Avaline that claims “a commitment to purity, transparency and sustainability.”

If drinking and investing in organic, sustainable and biodynamic wines (yes, there is a difference) appeals to you, read on for a quick overview before popping another cork.

Organic winemaking centers on certified, organically grown grapes. Meaning no harmful pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilizers or use of artificial preservatives (sulphur dioxide is approved).

Organic standards can vary across the globe, but the core includes no synthetic chemicals. Mainly, all grapes used must be grown using organic practices. In the U.S., certification is handled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Biodynamic winemaking builds on organic methods. These practices are based on Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner’s principles of foregoing chemical fertilizers and pesticide and planting, sowing, pruning and harvesting considering lunar phases and sun/planets alignment.

The term biodynamic is regulated and applies to grapes or wine. Wine must be certified organic before certification as biodynamic from organizations like Demeter and Biodyvin.

Sustainable winemaking embraces ecological principles and social responsibility. The term is widespread and vague. It is used as an umbrella term and can mean ambiguous practices.

This makes certification crucial. Vineyards and wineries need to meet an overall score threshold and to measure and track metrics for water, energy, greenhouse gases and nitrogen.

Natural wines support minimal intervention, use only organic or biodynamic grapes, avoid synthetic chemicals or sulphites and support traditional methods over commercial yeasts, enzymes or additives.

The hitch is they can vary greatly between vintages and don’t travel well beyond their site of origin. It’s an unregulated term, although there are unofficial codes of practice.

All of the above winemaking practices can overlap. At times, natural wines can be cloudier or taste slightly different and lack consistency. If you’re looking to stay sustainable, these wines may be a positive step in the right direction. Just remember to read labels and do your research.

Rescued Horses HELP HUMANS

HEAL

TRAUMA

"I dreamed of being a professional barrel racer. But now my goal is to barrel race when I’m 60,” Kimberly Brighton says as she fills up a barrel of water for her three cremello quarter horses and off-the-track thoroughbred racehorse rescue, Brother, whose glistening bay coloring makes him look like he could win the Kentucky Derby.

Photo Courtesy of Sedona Horse Medicine

Sometimes called unicorns, cremello horses’ pure cream coloring glows in the sun, while their light blue eyes are more susceptible to the sun’s damaging rays and need to be shaded.

Set in Sedona’s Jack Canyon in a backdrop of red rocks, Brighton’s horses provide therapy with more than just their beauty. The Sedona Horse Medicine herd optimizes their hearts’ incredible natural power to

help people recognize, process and release trauma while regulating nervous systems and heart rates.

“It’s like a supernatural experience,” says Jessica MacLean, local writer and disability advocate. “The first time trauma memories surfaced unexpectedly, I cried and pet the horse while I thanked him. The second time, it was a mini-session with the whole herd. Brother walked right up to me

until I was touching him. The three cremello horses started to surround us, yawning and chewing as the entire herd was releasing layers of energy from my trauma, while I felt and pictured the trauma that they were processing. You really have to experience it for yourself. It’s like they show you what you don’t want to see and then they help you let it go.”

Horses can sense the emotional state of nearby humans. A horse’s feelings determine the rhythm of their heart. For both humans and horses, negative feelings cause an incoherent heart rate variability (HRV), while positive feelings produce a more coherent HRV.

Studies have shown that if a person focuses on feelings of love and appreciation for a nearby horse, the human and horse HRV will shift to a similar, more coherent pattern, what is known as “heart locking.” And like any great love story, hearts are only synchronized when close together. There’s some pretty complicated science behind this, but in a nutshell, it’s incredibly effective for regulating nervous systems that have been damaged by trauma. The herd helps many people heal from being stuck in a chronic fight, flight, freeze or fawn state.

“I knew from the moment I got Paladin that I was starting a journey, healing my own trauma. As I grew in my awareness of healing trauma and blockages, I started helping others,” Kimberly says. “I wanted to show people through equine-assisted learning how to be an effective leader and find their ‘true north’ divine purpose. There is life after trauma.”

Preserve your MANICURE

WITH A FEW SIMPLE STEPS

Maintaining a flawless manicure between salon visits requires a few simple steps that can keep your nails looking as polished as the day you left.

HYDRATION IS KEY

One of the most important aspects of nail care is hydration. Your hands are constantly exposed to water, soap and other elements that can dry out your nails and cuticles. To prevent this, apply cuticle oil or cream daily to keep your cuticles soft and hydrated. Additionally, a rich hand cream should be used after washing your hands to maintain moisture, which helps prevent peeling or cracking.

WEAR GLOVES FOR PROTECTION

When cleaning or washing dishes, always wear gloves to protect nails from harsh chemicals and water. Prolonged exposure to water can weaken the nail polish and cause it to chip prematurely. Gloves also protect your hands from unnecessary dryness, which can damage both your nails and skin.

FILE, DON’T CLIP

As your nails grow, they can become uneven or develop tiny snags. Instead of using clippers, which can cause your

nails to split or break, opt for a fine-grit nail file. Filing your nails regularly, but gently, will help maintain their shape and prevent chipping. Always file in one direction to avoid weakening the nails.

APPLY A TOP COAT EVERY FEW DAYS

To keep your manicure fresh and glossy, reapply a clear top coat every two to three days. This adds an extra layer of protection, sealing the polish and reducing the chances of chips or cracks. Opt for a quick-drying top coat with strengthening properties to provide both shine and durability.

TOUCH UP CHIPS IMMEDIATELY

Even with the best care, chips can happen. To prevent a small chip from turning into a larger problem, address it right away. Keep a matching polish on hand for quick touchups, applying a small amount of polish only to the affected area. Once dry, seal the repair with a clear top coat to blend the touch-up with the rest of your manicure.

Superfoods SUPER

The following foods are basically a good source of vitamins and minerals and labeled “superfoods.” They are nutrient-dense foods that either have a lot of one nutrient or are a good source of several nutrients.

For example, a food that’s a good source of omega-3s might be branded a superfood if it’s hard to find that source in other foods. There’s not a definitive list of superfoods, but let’s look at a few, some you may be surprised have earned the title.

Dark leafy greens — You knew this one. Dark green leafy vegetables are an excellent source of folate, zinc, calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin C and fiber. They may even reduce your risk of chronic illnesses including heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. They also contain high levels of antiinflammatory carotenoids, which protect against certain types of cancer.

Eggs — Don’t panic. Despite cholesterol fears, research indicates no measurable increase in heart disease or diabetes risk from eating six to 12 eggs per week. Whole eggs are rich in B vitamins, choline, selenium, vitamin A, iron and phosphorus. And, they’re loaded with protein.

Kefir — This fermented beverage is usually made from milk that contains protein, calcium, B vitamins, potassium and probiotics. It’s similar to yogurt but is thinner and typically has more probiotics than yogurt. It’s associated

THAT DESERVE THE TITLE

with reduced cholesterol, lowered blood pressure, improved digestion and anti-inflammatory effects.

Garlic — Yes, this plant food is closely related to onions, leeks and shallots and is a good source of manganese, vitamin C, vitamin B6, selenium and fiber. It tastes great, but it’s been used for medicinal reasons for centuries. It helps in reducing cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as supporting immune function.

Mushrooms — Either loved or hated, their nutrient value varies by variety. Most contain vitamin A, potassium, fiber and several antioxidants. Their high antioxidant content helps them play a role in reducing inflammation and preventing certain types of cancers. Common varieties include button, portobello, shiitake, cremini and oyster.

Seaweed — Most commonly eaten in Asian cuisine, it’s increasingly popular in the United States. It packs in vitamin K, folate, iodine and fiber and is a source of unique bioactive compounds not typically present in land vegetables, which may have antioxidant effects.

Sweet potato — This root vegetable is loaded with potassium, fiber and vitamins A and C. They’re a good source of carotenoids and don’t increase blood sugar as much as you might think. Studies show they may actually improve blood sugar control in those with Type 2 diabetes.

KNOW INS & OUTS OF

CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments that exfoliate the skin’s outer layers by applying a chemical solution. Dead skin cells are shed during this process, revealing fresher, younger-looking skin underneath. Chemical peels can be used to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, sun damage and uneven skin tone.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS

1. Superficial peels: These peels are gentle and usually require little to no downtime, making them a popular choice for minor skin imperfections or routine maintenance. They are ideal for improving skin texture, addressing mild pigmentation issues and achieving a brighter complexion.

2. Medium peels: These peels penetrate deeper and often use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or a combination of TCA and glycolic acid. They treat moderate skin issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Medium peels may require some downtime, with skin peeling and redness lasting a few days to a week.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE THE RESULTS

To maximize the benefits of your chemical peel and maintain your results for as long as possible, consider these tips:

1. Follow your skin care professional’s advice: They offer personalized advice on post-peel care, suitable skin care products and how often to schedule follow-up treatments.

2. Use sun protection: Sun exposure can significantly impact the results of a chemical peel and may even reverse the benefits. Even on days with cloudy skies, always use a high-SPF sunscreen, and stay out of the sun for as long as possible, especially in the weeks after your peel.

3. Stay hydrated: Hydrate your skin from the inside out by consuming lots of water. Well-hydrated skin heals more effectively and retains its youthful appearance.

4. Use gentle skin care products: After a chemical peel, your skin will be more sensitive than usual. To avoid further irritation, opt for gentle, non-irritating skin care products. Until your skin has fully recovered, avoid harsh exfoliants, retinoids and products with strong fragrances.

5. Schedule maintenance treatments: For long-lasting results, consider scheduling maintenance treatments. Regular chemical peels can help keep your skin looking its best and address new concerns as they arise. Your skin care professional can recommend the appropriate frequency for your maintenance treatments.

STAY FIT ON THE FLY WITH

Travel-ready EQUIPMENT

We can take limited breaks from our fitness regime without putting a dent in our well-being, but a trip or vacation of more than a few days may be more than you want to take a chance with. The logistics of keeping up with your workout can get tricky when you can’t or don’t want to find a backup gym at your destination, but there are several types of equipment you can pack without it dragging your journey down.

PORTABLE WEIGHTS

There are several types of collapsible barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells on the market that can be filled with sand or water when it’s “go” time. There are numerous styles and brands including the tough canvas sandbags made by Exerbell and AquaBells Dumbbells, which can weigh up to 45 pounds each when filled with water. Several companies sell sandbag sets consisting of multiple sizes to wrestle and throw, and dainty water weights can be worn around the wrists and legs.

WEARABLE WEIGHTS

If you don’t have the time or resources to fill those collapsible weights, you can try relatively lightweight belts, bracelets, anklets and vests that are easier to pack than traditional weights. They often come with pouches of weight that can be added or subtracted to customize your workout.

They’re perfect for targeting particular body parts or muscle groups and can bump up the resistance when you go on a day of leisurely sightseeing or hiking.

SLIDERS

Small, round, inexpensive plastic discs may not seem like they would be revolutionary, but they do allow your feet to glide across the floor during a workout, creating enough instability to challenge and hone your balance in a way that’s easier on your joints (and on your downstairs neighbors at the hotel). Also known as yoga sliders, using them for moves like mountain climbers and lateral lunges can fire up your core and glutes even more. Be sure to find a pair that works on multiple floor surfaces.

SHOES

Bringing the right shoes for your workout is important if you’re not planning to wear them otherwise, but they’re all you need for running or walking around the hotel grounds or on the beach.

MEDITATION

IS KEY TO

Greatest Luxury

It’s said that money can’t buy everything, and that’s certainly true for the ultimate luxury — relishing the inner peace that lies at our core. That stillness and presence in the moment can’t be bought, especially in this frenetic, tech-riddled world we’re always trying to escape. It’s accessed through some patient work toward being able to let go of upsetting or intrusive thoughts and redirecting our minds to the task at hand, even and especially if what we’re trying to do is relax. Meditation is a deceptively simple act that brings some tremendously positive results if we put in the time needed to learn it.

HOW TO GET STARTED

There is no one singular way to meditate; nearly any activity can be described as a “form of meditation” and there’s overlap between many of them. The more common ones include spiritual meditation or prayer; mindfulness meditation; breath work; mantra-based meditation; focused meditation; tai chi and other gentle movement-based activities. Many people find running or other more strenuous exercise to be very meditative. It might be easiest for those of us just beginning to explore the possibilities to start with mindfulness meditation, which can be practiced pretty much anywhere at any time.

• Find a place to sit or lie down comfortably, keeping your spine straight and your shoulders relaxed. Any position will work as long as outside distractions are minimized, though you may not be able to eliminate them.

• Home in on your breath. Keep breathing naturally and pay attention to its pace, slowing it down if it feels rushed. Feel your chest rise and fall and the air whooshing through your nose. Do this for at least 10 breaths and if circumstances allow, try to extend it to five or 10 minutes.

• During this time unrelated thoughts will inevitably crop up in your mind — acknowledge and then dismiss them, gently drawing your attention back to the sound and sensation of your respiration.

If you feel you need a more structured approach to meditation you can choose a recorded guided meditation to try or ask friends for their recommendations. Meditation allows us to summon tranquility and peace whenever needed — the ultimate for easy living.

I PROFESSIONAL FOR YOU? IS A

Organic Facial

f you’re trying to stay sustainable and protect the environment, why aren’t you focusing some of that attention on yourself? A professional organic facial pampers and rejuvenates your skin but also supports a more sustainable and health-conscious lifestyle.

First, look for an organic facial near you that emphasizes the use of natural, nontoxic ingredients to cleanse, nourish and revitalize your skin. You want someone who uses organic products from plantbased sources, not harsh chemicals and synthetic compounds.

An organic facial is particularly suitable if you have sensitive skin and react to the harsh chemicals in conventional skin care treatments. Natural, nontoxic ingredients are chosen for their gentleness and efficacy. Using natural ingredients reduces the risk of irritation and allergic reactions. This makes organic facials a safer, more comfortable option for nurturing healthy skin. Of course, communicate any skin sensitivities or concerns before your facial.

An organic facial typically includes cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating, all with natural and organic products.

First, you’ll experience a deep cleansing to eliminate impurities. Many of the herbs, oils and fruits used to make organic facials offer antioxidants, which help with sun- or wind-damaged skin.

This is followed by gentle exfoliation using natural enzymes or finely ground plant materials. Exfoliating at least twice a week helps remove that dead skin that doesn’t fall off on its own.

The final step involves moisturizing with plant-based oils, sealing in hydration and leaving skin soft and rejuvenated. A facial done with steam and hot towels helps open up your pores and reveal a beautiful complexion

Following an organic facial, prioritize sun protection and adequate moisture to preserve the radiant complexion from your facial. Adhering to post-treatment guidelines is key to the vitality of your skin.

The benefit is not only to your skin but that these facials prioritize ecofriendly practices and ingredients and contribute to reducing the ecological footprint associated with skin care. It’s about valuing health, sustainability and the gentle effectiveness of nature.

As the year draws to a close it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect and assess your personal wellness journey.

It’s easy to lose sight of our wellbeing as we juggle our responsibilities. But making time to take stock of our health — both physical and mental — before the new year offers a fresh perspective and a chance to recalibrate.

REFLECT ON THE YEAR

Start by asking yourself some fundamental questions: How do you feel physically? Emotionally? Mentally? Review your fitness, diet, stress levels and emotional well-being. Did you achieve the goals you set earlier in the year? Were there unexpected challenges? Reflecting on achievements and setbacks gives clarity on where you stand and what needs to be prioritized moving forward.

Take stock of your physical health by reflecting on your exercise routine, eating habits and overall energy levels. If your fitness goals took a back seat, it’s never too late to get back on track. Consider how you felt when you were at your most energized and healthiest. What changes did you make then, and how can you re-implement them? Whether it’s adjusting your exercise regimen, fine-tuning your diet or getting more sleep, identifying the areas that need attention helps you set more realistic and impactful intentions for the new year.

EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL WELLNESS

Equally important is your mental health. The stresses of modern life can leave you feeling drained or overwhelmed, so ask yourself how well you managed stress throughout the year. Were there moments when you felt out of balance or lost control of your emotional well-being?

Perhaps meditation, journaling or simply setting boundaries could help you regain a sense of calm and focus. It’s important to recognize the moments that brought you joy and peace and consider how you can invite more into your daily life.

SET YOUR INTENTIONS

Now it’s time to set your intentions for the new year. Setting intentions focuses on the broader picture — how you want to feel, live and grow in the coming months. Intentions provide a framework for growth without the pressure of “achieving” a specific goal by a certain date.

Think about the areas of your wellness that need nurturing. If stress management was a challenge, an intention might be, “I will prioritize my mental health by incorporating daily meditation or mindfulness practices.”

If you want to focus on your physical well-being, an intention could be, “I will move my body in ways that feel good and boost my energy.”

Then use those intentions to create specific, time-bound and achievable goals. Think in terms of, “I will spend 15 minutes with a guided meditation just after getting out of bed,” or “I will dance for at least 30 minutes three nights a week.”

Flagstaff is a four season hub of activity where an eclectic mix of small-town charm and endless outdoor adventure beckons.

It is the highest point on the entirety of Route 66. It's also the place where Pluto was discoverd and astronauts trained before first visiting the moon.

Drop your bags off at Little America, a prime location close to great restaurants, hiking, skiing and only 90 minutes away from the Grand Canyon.

SMALL CHANGES

CAN MAKE YOUR HOME MORE ELEGANT

very new season brings a desire for a change, even if that’s just a few quick and easy changes to give your home a bright, elegant touch up. Your first step — declutter. An organized space screams luxury. Not only will it leave your

home more presentable, but it's great for your mental health. You’ll be surprised how your kitchen is instantly elevated by removing piles of papers, appliances off the counter and dishes from the dish rack. Cleared counters, tables with

few accents and clean refrigerator fronts invite the eye to your décor rather than clutter.

While you’re in the kitchen, consider giving the hardware an update. Towel bars with coordinating drawer and door pulls can make a huge difference. Hardware in the bathroom could also use a refresh and give the room a new look.

Don’t underestimate the appeal of fresh flowers. Fresh flowers give off an organic feel that add life and color to a room. Changing flowers with the season also give a boost to your mood and welcome guests.

To give your home a grand, open feel, hang your curtains as high as possible. This makes the room look more expensive and can give the illusion of a higher ceiling. In contrast, window treatments hung too low can make a room look small and cramped.

Let your creative flag fly with lighting trends. Right now it’s all about curves, texture and deluxe living. Sustainability brings nature inside with bamboo, wood and stone. Replace chandeliers and lighting or take small bites and switch lamp shades for new textures and colors.

For an easy but dramatic change, consider area rugs to add color and style. If you already have them, swapping them for a bright change can give a new look to a room. When choosing, size right for the room. And of course colors, styles and texture play a large part so be creative. And once you’re decided on a rug change, consider giving your

the room a boost by rearranging. If you’re not limited by a large sofa or wall space, try floating the sofa or chairs rather than leaving everything against walls. Angle them rather than keeping everything right-angled. Once again — experiment. Head outside and update your entryway. It makes the first impression, so make it a welcoming spot. Paint the door a bold color, add planters or a wreath or update your walkway with pavers. Finally, don’t neglect the bathroom: take a look at your towels. When you think about luxury hotels and spas, you expect soft, fluffy towels and robes. So why not at home? Give your bathroom a lavish feel and make an impression on guests.

ARCHITECTURE:

Rethinking Luxury Living

Luxury living is taking on a new meaning. As architects push the boundaries of what is possible, they are stepping away from the “standard” to create homes that not only provide a lavish lifestyle but also prioritize energy efficiency, water conservation and harmony with the natural surroundings. No longer is luxury just about grandeur and opulence. Homeowners are now looking for properties that offer all the luxurious amenities they desire but also align with their values of environmental sustainability and connection to nature. As a result, architects

are redefining what it means to live in luxury in the Southwest.

One of the key aspects is the focus on energy efficiency. Modern architects are incorporating innovative design features such as solar panels, energy-efficient appliances and smart home technology to reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills. By prioritizing energy efficiency, homeowners can enjoy all the comforts of luxury living without compromising on sustainability.

Water conservation is a critical concern. Homes are now being designed with features such as drought-resistant landscaping,

rainwater harvesting systems and low-flow fixtures to minimize water usage. By incorporating these environmentally conscious elements into their designs, architects are not only helping homeowners reduce their water footprint but also preserving this precious resource for future generations.

Another essential aspect of rethinking luxury living is the emphasis on harmonizing with nature.

Instead of imposing large, imposing structures, architects are now designing homes that blend seamlessly with their surroundings. From using natural materials such as stone and wood to incorporating expansive windows that frame breathtaking desert views, these homes are not just places to live but works of art that celebrate the beauty of the natural world.

As the demand for luxury living continues to grow, architects are thinking outside the box and creating homes that are not only luxurious but also sustainable and in harmony with nature.

So, are you ready to experience a new level of luxury living in Arizona?

The WAV Heated Lounge Chair & Coffee Table.

WITH HEATED OUTDOOR FURNITURE Spread the

WARMTH

n Northern Arizona many of us tend to give up on the outdoor spaces we so loved during the summer once winter crawls in. We sit in the natural beauty of our world for abbreviated moments if at all. Patio heaters and fire pits can lead to a Lord of the Fliesesque battle for the prime seats.

The solution is the right outdoor furniture to bring you and your family back outside and spread a luxurious glow throughout our favorite al fresco areas as we toast the holidays and beyond.

HEATED LOUNGE CHAIR

This minimalistic new product from WRMTH has the breeziness of a summer seat but packs serious heat, thanks to “safe, advanced, patented heating technology discreetly into the core of every chair,” according to the manufacturer. Coziness will overtake you as the heat expands through the seat, arms and back made of modified stone.

The temperature is easily controlled by hovering your smartphone over the chair’s QR code or downloading a userfriendly app for more advanced features.

The Canadian company also sells the first Adirondack-style chair to incorporate heating technology in its Modern Muskoka line.

GALANTER & JONES

This Bay Area design firm produced the first furniture of its kind beginning in 2012. You’ll find a wide range of heated seating options, including one-, two- and three-seaters with (unheated) tables and planters as accessories.

The heat on these funky, futuristic pieces are controlled with an intuitive knob. They are built with gravity-driven drainage systems to keep them dry and clean. Reviewers say these pieces are ideal for outdoor temperatures under 50 degrees, allowing people to talk and dine well into the evening.

OUTMORE LIVING

Billed as the first battery-powered heated outdoor furniture to reach the market, Outmore’s sofas, loveseats and chairs have a teak frame topped with innovative five-layer cushions containing a carbon fiber heating element and topped with Sunbrella fabric. It has five temperature settings between 85 and 120 degrees and a battery life of 10 hours, enough to last a night of brisk outdoor fun.

Enchant & Welcome LET YOUR TABLE YOUR GUESTS

This is the season we bring family and friends into our homes, and it’s a joy to entertain with an inviting autumn theme. And your dining table is the perfect spot to create a warm tablescape.

Let’s look at a few ideas for inspiration.

First, look at choosing a color theme. For instance, rather than the typical orange and red, let’s work with green and burgundy and all the possibilities.

Numerous shades of green and burgundy abound in the season, including artichokes, figs and plums. Find cabbages in burgundy and green as well as grapes in different hues. Squashes can add to the array of green shades. For interesting additions, add Queen Anne’s Lace as well as vintage brass accents. Add colored glassware and even clay pots or serving trays.

If you want to use pumpkins, seek out white or green for a change of pace. Look for unusual shapes and sizes to capture the eye.

Hydrangeas make a stunning addition, and the assortment of colors available fit anywhere. And head outside with scissors to find greenery from your own plants. While you’re at it, pick up a few pinecones on your walk and fall leaves for the table.

Now that you’ve collected your items, it’s time to layer and create a masterpiece. You can use a runner or tablecloth. If you’re planning a rustic design and working with a live-edge table, leave

it bare. Placemats and runners can be added in contrasting shades.

If you want to contain the decorations, consider one long platter or even a long plank of wood for dramatic effect. Next, choose lighting. Place tiny strings of twinkle lights, votives, tapers and/or candlesticks. Now arrange larger items and stand back to see that you’re feeling the placement.

Next add medium-sized items like pinecones, veggies, small pumpkins, gourds and fruits. Prop against each other and move them around. Cluster some to get a natural look. Lastly, add leaves, tiny fruits, clusters of grapes etc. to fill open spaces and add color where it’s needed. Set the table with several kinds of dishes and layer them. For instance, start with a charger, dinner plate, salad plate and a small vintage bread plate if you have them. If you want to keep it simple, use one plate and add as you go, it’s up to you.

Wrap silverware in mismatched napkins, tie with twine and a stem of Queen Anne’s Lace or greenery from your garden. Remember, it’s not always about buying items, use vintage pieces in creative ways. Add a cabbage and a few figs to an antique bowl, pile a silver platter with pinecones and apples. Rummage in closets for items seldom used and give them new life.

LUXURIOUS CHOICES

MFOR AN ECO-FRIENDLY LIFESTYLE

odern consumers are increasingly seeking ways to align their desire for high-end experiences and products with their commitment to protecting the environment. Here are some eco-conscious lifestyle choices that allow you to enjoy the finer things in life while treading lightly on the planet, without relying on vintage or second-hand items.

INVEST IN HIGH-QUALITY, DURABLE PRODUCTS

One of the most sustainable choices you can make is to invest in high-quality products built to last. This applies to everything from furniture to clothing and home appliances.

A well-crafted sofa made from sustainably sourced materials or a luxurious organic cotton robe will not only stand the test of time but also reduce the need for frequent replacements. Durability ensures you are not contributing to the waste cycle that comes from disposable goods, and it enhances the sense of luxury, as you’re surrounded by items that maintain their beauty and functionality for years.

CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

The materials you surround yourself with can make a significant impact on the environment. Shop for products made from sustainable resources like bamboo, organic cotton or responsibly harvested wood.

Bamboo, for instance, is an excellent alternative for everything from flooring to home accessories. It's fast-growing, renewable and exudes a sleek, modern aesthetic that complements a luxurious home.

Organic cotton bedding, free from pesticides and harmful chemicals, not only provides comfort but also supports a healthier environment.

OPT FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGY

Technology is key in achieving a luxury lifestyle that also is environmentally responsible. Investing in energy-efficient appliances and home systems can significantly reduce your environmental impact without sacrificing comfort or convenience.

Modern, sleek appliances with Energy Star certification, for example, use less energy and water, translating into both savings and sustainability. Smart home tech goes even further through intelligent thermostats, automated lighting systems and smart water monitors.

SUPPORT ETHICAL LUXURY BRANDS

Luxury today is about more than just opulence — it’s about values. Supporting luxury brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical production practices allows you to indulge in high-end products with a clear conscience.

Many luxury fashion houses, for instance, are adopting eco-friendly practices such as using organic fabrics, reducing water waste and eliminating toxic dyes.

INCORPORATE NATURE INTO YOUR SPACE

Choose low-maintenance, air-purifying plants like the snake plant or fiddle leaf fig to add a natural, luxurious touch to your home. For outdoor spaces, consider native plants and sustainable landscaping, which require less water and maintenance, blending elegance with ecological responsibility.

Vintage Luxury Pieces

HCOMBINE WITH MODERN HOME DESIGN

istoric interior styles offer vast opportunities for designing your interior. Combining lush elements of the past with a more modern aesthetic creates a dialogue between the past and present.

Authentic, timeless pieces exude character and style, especially in a time when mass production and short-lived trends abound. By adding vintage, luxury pieces you’ll also be repurposing items in a stylish, sustainable way.

The challenge is to avoid creating a kitschy or overly themed space. Select pieces that work with a contemporary lifestyle while maintaining their history.

A few vintage design trends to pull from include:

Midcentury Modern — This era celebrated clean lines, practical forms and organic influences. Choose a vintage Eames lounge chair or Saarinen piece to add a pop of color and style to a room.

Art Deco — Opulent details and geometric patterns dominated this Roaring ‘20s era. To incorporate its style, lean into brass accents and add a bit of geometric accents in wallpaper, pillows or upholstery. Seek out a vintage chest with dazzling, glossy Japanese lacquer to be reimagined as a bar.

Victorian — The Victorian era embraced decorative furnishings and luxurious fabrics. Accent a room with intricate molding, elaborate ceiling medallions or velvet upholstery for Victorian touches. Find an ornate Victorian-era mirror and work around it for a dramatic focal point.

When choosing your vintage items (unless you are lucky to have them passed down by family), opt for classic pieces. They will last longer as well as draw more interest. Embrace palettes that evoke that era. Consider the rich, intense shades of the Victorian era (think reds paired with greens, golds with purples) or the pastels of the ‘50s (pink, turquoise, mint green,).

Balance is key. Incorporating a vintage luxury piece into your design demands careful thought and style to avoid plopping an eyesore into an otherwise lovely room. You want visitors to be intrigued by the style.

Of course, don’t be afraid to place a modern glass table next to a Victorian-era sofa. It’s these unexpected pairings that often create the most visually arresting spaces.

It’s also not a bad idea to consult an interior designer for some professional advice when adding these pieces to your design.

SWEDISH Death Cleaning

IS A GIFT TO YOURSELF AND THE FUTURE

Swedish death cleaning, or “döstädning,” is a minimalist concept rooted in Scandinavian culture that encourages decluttering your life with purpose and mindfulness. While the term might sound morbid, it is anything but — it’s about simplifying your home and life, allowing you to live more freely and leave behind a legacy of order and ease for your loved ones. For those who appreciate luxury living, Swedish death cleaning offers a refreshing, sophisticated approach to maintaining a home that’s not only stylish but also thoughtful and organized.

CREATING SPACE FOR THE ESSENTIALS

It’s not about filling your home with things, but about curating the finest pieces that bring you joy and comfort. Swedish death cleaning encourages you to part with items that no longer serve a purpose or evoke positive emotions. By doing so, you create space for the things that truly matter: a stunning piece of art, bespoke furniture or cherished family heirlooms. The process allows you to be more intentional about what you choose to surround yourself with, ensuring your home remains a place of tranquility and refinement.

FOSTERING MINDFULNESS AND MENTAL CLARITY

A cluttered space often leads to a cluttered mind. Döstädning is a mindful act that allows you to take control of your environment, leading to mental clarity and peace. When your home is well-organized, free from unnecessary items, it becomes a serene space that reflects your inner calm.

For those leading busy lives, this intentional decluttering offers a sense of control, reducing stress and promoting mindfulness.

LEAVING A LEGACY OF THOUGHTFULNESS

Swedish death cleaning not only is about organizing your present but also about leaving behind a thoughtful legacy for your loved ones. By going through belongings now, you relieve others from the burden of sorting through unnecessary items after you’re gone. This thoughtful gesture is a luxury in itself — showing care, foresight and love.

The process invites you to think about what’s truly important and to ensure that the items left behind carry meaning and value.
