honoree of the Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc – World’s Oldest Rodeo®, Lawton Champie’s legacy continues to resonate profoundly.

Prescott’s annual rodeo parade, themed “Prescott Traditions,” is set to take place on Saturday, July 6 at 9 a.m. in downtown Prescott, sponsored by Barrett Propane. The parade will kick off with the grand marshal honoree, Ibbie Champie. She is the daughter of Lawton Champie, a thirteen-time rodeo champion across various

events. Lawton won the All-Around in 1931, 1934 and 1944; calf roping in 1939; steer wrestling in 1931 and 1934; saddle bronc riding in 1924, 1926 and 1931. However, the story goes, Slim Riley got the credit for winning the bronc riding in 1924 because he got hurt the first day and Lawton was bucked off the first day, so, Lawton filled in for Riley the last three days and won the event. In those days it was all right for someone to ride for another person. Demonstrating true cowboy spirit, they shared the reward money.

Born with an innate talent for horsemanship and a fierce determination to succeed, Lawton Champie embarked on his rodeo journey in the early 1920s. His prowess as a saddle bronc rider quickly became evident, clinching the championship in 1926 and reaffirming his dominance in 1931, showcasing unparalleled skill and grace atop bucking broncos.

Champie’s versatility shone through various disciplines, mastering Cow Pony Racing in consecutive years, 1925 and 1926, displaying unparalleled speed and finesse astride his trusty mounts. His agility and precision were further evident in Steer Wrestling, seizing victory in 1931 and again in 1934, earning admiration for his exceptional control and technique.

The indelible mark of Lawton Champie extended to Tie Down roping in 1939, demonstrating his ability to swiftly and accurately rope calves, setting a standard for efficiency and accuracy in the event. Not content with individual accolades, Champie excelled in team events, claiming victory in Team Roping in 1943 and showcasing his versatility as a Team Roping Heeler the following year, solidifying his reputation as an all-around cowboy.

Beyond his impressive list of championships, Champie’s legacy reverberates for his unwavering dedication to the sport and the values it embodies. His commitment to excellence, resilience in the face of adversity, and respect for the animals and fellow competitors encapsulate the true essence of rodeo.

As Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc pays tribute to Lawton Champie in 2024, it not only honors his exceptional achievements but also celebrates the enduring spirit and heritage of rodeo. Champie’s legacy serves as

Champie among fellow rodeo participants in front of Bucky O’Neill Monument, apprx. 1930

an inspiration, reminding current and future generations of rodeo enthusiasts of the relentless pursuit of greatness and the timeless values ingrained within the sport.

Lawton Champie’s story transcends mere victories; it symbolizes the epitome of passion, dedication, and sportsmanship, leaving an indelible imprint on the vibrant tapestry of rodeo history that continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide. Welcome from

Mayor Kell Palguta

Welcome to Prescott Valley, the most dynamic community in Central Arizona, with its nearly mile-high elevation, mild weather, four distinct seasons and stunning scenery. Add in Prescott Valley’s proximity to the desert cities 90 miles south, and the offerings of the high country 75 miles north, and you’ll find a lot to love!

As Prescott Valley’s population hovers around 50,000 people, it still retains the small-town ambiance that attracts friendly people from throughout the country. We enjoy many of the amenities of much larger communities while still being the third safest community in Arizona.

Community “points of pride” include the 5,500-seat Findlay Toyota Center, home to the Indoor Football League’s 2022 Champion the Northern Arizona Wranglers and the host to concerts, professional bull riding, monster truck shows and other exciting entertainment.

For 2024, Prescott Valley will be hosting Country Music Award Entertainer of the Year Lainey Wilson as well as world famous comedian Gabriel Iglesias.

You can venture out to hike and bike on miles of scenic trails and multiuse pathways. Prescott Valley offers more than 2,000 acres of park lands and open space, an outdoor public swimming pool, 20 multipurpose athletic fields, miles of trails, and an award-winning amphitheater.

The Town is constantly striving to enhance its 26 parks to provide an enjoyable experience for residents and visitors. These parks provide such recreational opportunities as playing, fishing, participating in youth and adult sports leagues, letting your pup run free at the dog park or simply basking in the sun.

Visitors and residents always enjoy their time at the historic Fain Park on Lynx Creek, where you can try your

hand at gold panning or fishing at the fully stocked Fain Lake. Up for a challenge? Hike 900 feet above the community on the Glassford Hill Summit Trail, with the reward of spectacular views of Prescott Valley, the San Francisco Peaks and other surrounding landmarks.

Enjoying everything Prescott Valley has to offer will certainly work up an appetite so don’t forget to enjoy a pleasant meal out at one of our award-winning restaurants.

Check us out on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Additionally, browse through the Town’s website at www.prescottvalley-az.gov and download the OurPV app on your phone to stay updated.

Welcome to your new hometown. We’re glad you’re here!

Health & Medical Care

Health care is the leading industry for growth in Arizona in terms of the number and quality of jobs, says Lee McPheters, a research professor of economics at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

Yavapai County ranks first out of Arizona’s 15 counties for healthy behaviors, and thanks to a strong network of health care partners and collaborators the community is poised to maintain its position.

Nearly 90% of people in the community report being able to see a doctor when needed, according to a 2017 Yavapai County Community Health Services report, the most recent available.

PRESCOTT VALLEY’S RANGE OF CHOICES

Prescott Valley has an array of health care options, starting with a

72-bed acute care hospital. Since opening in 2006, Dignity HealthYavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) East has been an excellent example of the area’s commitment to providing good medical care. The hospital provides advanced medical care through a state-ofthe-art environment that includes the Family Birthing Center, the BreastCare Center, the Advanced Wound Care Center and a growing complex of medical specialties and resources.

YRMC PhysicianCare was created in 2009 to provide expert medical care to Greater

Prescott’s growing population from medical clinics including one in Prescott Valley. Services available include family and internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, neurosurgical medicine, orthopedic surgery and pain management.

The town has numerous medical practices, many conveniently located near the hospital along Windsong Drive. You’ll have multiple options for primary care, pediatrics, cardiology, dentistry, optometry, psychiatry, counseling, chiropractic care, IV therapy and other specialties.

Choose from a palette of options Housing

Prescott Valley is a thriving community adding new builds all the time but with plenty of existing homes for affordability and sustainability. Its population has expanded from 38,800 in 2010 to its current 50,000.

The valley has been inhabited by indigenous tribes for millennia and became a hub for mining and ranching in the mid-19th century, but its residential development didn’t begin in earnest until 1966, so its homes are relatively new; more than half were built in 1990 or later.

Smaller and manufactured homes built for affordable residential and retirement living predominate in the western core of the town, while master-planned communities and subdivisions fan out to the east, north and south.

More rural neighborhoods are found primarily north of AZ-89A. All are near convenient shopping and employment areas.

The median sale price for Prescott Valley homes in early 2024 was around $550,000. This is about 4.6% higher than the same time last year even though days spent on the market and the supply of available homes have both increased; a testament to the town’s enduring appeal and home values.

In Prescott Valley, you can live in a classic ranch or craftsman-style home, mission- or Tuscan-style charmer, luxurious custom property, upscale apartment or anything else you’ve been dreaming of.

One way you can begin your journey home is by searching the Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce’s member directory for qualified, talented professionals at www.pvchamber.org/members.

Prescott Valley Neighborhoods

Every street has a sense of place

Neighborhoods are the building block of every community, and Prescott Valley takes particular pride in theirs, whether they’re part of an HOA or not. There are too many to include a complete list but we wanted to give you a sampling of your options.

PRESCOTT VALLEY UNITS

Prescott Valley’s earliest development and many neighborhoods fall within this cross-shaped area in the heart of today’s community, with Mountain Valley Park near its center. This area is filled with established neighborhoods and local businesses that have stood the test of time and form the heart of the town.

The Civic Center, which contains the Prescott Valley Public Library, municipal offices and Civic Center Park, is tucked into its southeast side.

GRANVILLE

Prescott Valley’s largest masterplanned community straddles Glassford Hill Road north of Long Look Drive up to AZ-89A. It has several parks, a clubhouse, gym, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, homes for every kind of household and is just north of Findlay Toyota Center, the Entertainment District and surrounding commercial development.

STONERIDGE

The only master-planned community south of AZ-69 is built into the ridges of the Bradshaw Mountains, offering an 18-hole championship golf course, several parks and a variety of housing styles.

PRONGHORN RANCH

Built under the high desert vistas north of AZ-89A, this community is built around a clubhouse with a fantastic array of amenities for residents and has expansive lots for families to spread out over.

THRIVE IN PRESCOTT VALLEY

Prescott Valley is considered one of Arizona’s safest communities and has rapidly expanding options to live, work and play.

Health — Its bright sun, fresh mountain air and closeness to nature beckon to everyone to come outdoors and walk, run, bike, hike, play sports and lead an active life. Convenient health care is available at Dignity-YRMC’s East Campus and a full contingent of medical practices.

Arts & Entertainment — High-quality movies, live concerts and plays and sports events are centered in the town’s Entertainment District, which includes the Prescott Valley Harkins 14, Main Street Theatre and 6,200-seat Findlay Toyota Center arena. It’s also the site of Prescott Valley Days and other community events.

Dining — The options are great and growing. The town is peppered with locally owned diners and cafes and restaurants serving everything from sushi to barbecue. Authentic Mexican cuisine, spicy Thai feasts and meals overlooking a golf course are just a few of the choices. A brewery and a wine bar provide excellent libations too.

Golf — Speaking of golf, don’t forget Prescott Valley’s courses offering the best our community has to offer — outdoor fun with spellbinding mountain views and a challenging but convivial atmosphere.

Day trips — When you’re ready to hit the road, there are plenty of nearby attractions so enchanting you could easily spend more than a day in any one of them!

When a community can take ownership of its direction, so many great things can happen. Here in Prescott Valley those great things are happening.

From Lonesome Valley to Prescott Valley, Community has Adapted to Change History

Archaeological evidence of human settlement in Prescott Valley dates back to the year 800. Between 1050 and 1300 A.D., a large mesa pueblo existed on the south side of Lynx Creek in what is now Fain Park, for which large stone slabs from nearby granite outcroppings were used as the foundation. The main structure included about 32 rooms with another 21 outlying rooms.

The remains of this structure were discovered by gold miners in 1864 and are now known as the Fitzmaurice Ruins. It is the largest Native American archeological site in the Prescott area.

The miners who discovered these ruins also brought the first economic activity to the area. They included Thomas Barlow-Massicks, who created hydraulic works, built a dam across the creek and a three-story mansion that still stands near the dam in Fain Park.

In the 1880s Army Lt. William

Glassford used the valley's tallest hill for a mirror-based signaling system, to warn other officers of incoming Apache raids.

As the gold rush continued, ranchers began establishing themselves in the grassland to the north of the creek in what was known as “Lonesome Valley.” The Fain family arrived in the 1870s, and their holdings grew until the Rafter Eleven Ranch covered a huge area from Granite Mountain in the west to Mingus Mountain in the east.

The family kicked off residential development in the area in the 1960s, renaming it Prescott Valley and hiring Robert Loos and Leonard Hoffman to pursue buyers in the Midwest, focusing on the retirement market.

A 1978 incorporation vote by its more than 1,500 residents led to the Town of Prescott Valley’s incorporation, and it hasn’t stopped growing since but still honors its rural roots and history.

Glassford Hill was formed by a volcanic eruption about 12 million years ago.

Yavapai Humane Society Welcomes You and your Furry Family Members to Prescott!

Welcome to Prescott, a picturesque haven nestled in the heart of Arizona’s high country, where the charming blend of history, nature and warm hospitality beckons both twolegged and four-legged visitors alike.

Whether you’re a new resident or a potential resident, Prescott opens its arms to you and your furry companions, inviting you to explore its vibrant community, stunning landscapes and dog-friendly delights. From scenic trails to pet-friendly patios, this city offers a wealth of experiences that make it a paw-sitively perfect destination for dog lovers and adventurers alike.

So, leash up your best friend and embark on an unforgettable journey through Prescott’s welcoming streets, where the joy of adventure knows no bounds.

Prior to heading out on any outings with your furry companion, though, make sure your veterinarian has given your pup a clean bill of health. This will help prevent injuries and any potential exercise-related problems.

Prescott boasts an elevation exceeding 5,000 feet, and just as it takes us humans some time to acclimate, your dog also will need an adjustment period. We are also surrounded by Prescott National Forest, so be aware of the different wildlife that inhabit our area and sometimes venture into neighborhoods.

Additionally, our region experiences extreme weather conditions, including scorching summers and snowy winters. Be

sure to check the temperature and weather forecast before venturing out, and keep in mind that the weather can change quite suddenly, so keep an eye on the sky!

Carrying your cellphone is advisable in case you encounter any unforeseen challenges during your outing.

Giving your furry friend the right dose of physical fun is a key ingredient in keeping their muscles and joints in tip-top shape, maintaining a healthy weight and letting out all that pent-up energy.

Start the adventure with a leisurely neighborhood walk, and then level up to longer, more exciting hikes. Just like us humans, you wouldn’t want to leap straight into a 3-mile hike without a warmup. So, amp up your daily walks bit by bit, and toss in a hill or two for that extra zest and zing!

When you’re ready to hit one of our many pet-friendly trails, we suggest the Watson Woods Trail that starts at Rosser Street and goes to Watson Lake. It’s a nice 3½ mile roundtrip hike that is pretty flat and a good starting point for beginners.

From there, you can venture out to other trails and eventually to some that challenge you both a bit more. Lynx Lake Loop is a beautiful 2½ mile hike that is relatively easy. The Constellation Loop comes in at about the same length and also is easy but often quite busy. Goldwater Lakes Trail No. 396 is an 8-mile hike out and

back, which has nice benches along the way to take a break when needed.

Remember to bring potty bags, water for both of you, and be sure to keep an eye on your dog(s) to make sure they are not becoming overheated or exhausted. And remember that while it’s tempting to let your dog off its leash, it is Arizona law that your dog remains on a leash that is a maximum of 6-feet long. This is for the safety of not only your dog, but others you may come across.

Having an adventure with your dog in Prescott is a win-win! You both soak up the beauty, get exercise and strengthen your bond. Plus, it’s a paw-some chance to mingle with other pups and peeps!

So, grab that leash and your playful pooch and hit the trail for an awesome time together! It’ll put smiles on both your faces!

And if you’re on the hunt for a new furry adventure buddy, visit our website at yavapaihumane.org where you can see all the awesome animals just waiting for you. Give us a call at 928.445.2666 to fetch more information or to set up an appointment.
