Tanju Halil Tuzer MCMXLIV - 2017

An accomplished professional dancer on the international stage, and one of classical ballet’s greatest ambassadors, Tanju Tuzer was a true artist. The art form flourished in his hands. As a man, he was a craftsman, an avid fisherman, a gardener and a beekeeper. To his core, he was an adventurer and a lover of the human spirit. As an artistic director and teacher, he was maestro, a brilliant oracle of dance who had a passion for connecting the body to the soul while teaching students, whom he loved dearly. In these young minds, he cultivated tenacity and discipline. Through his commitment, he imbued generations of lives with his strong character. He taught that the true magic of dance was not found in powerful jumps or turns, but in the ability to transcend the mundane and take the audience into a higher, ethereal plane. Tanju, you have influenced and inspired so many. We miss you dearly but your spirit lives in our hearts. Your voice echos throughout the school and your passion lives on through us.

ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Tanju Tuzer was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and began his dance training at the Ankara State Conservatory under the direction of Molly and Travis Kemp, former dancers who shared the stage with the legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova. He then danced with the Turkish Ballet before receiving a scholarship to the Royal Ballet in London. In 1970 he joined the Harkness Ballet in New York City as a principal dancer, and later also danced as a principal with John Neumeier’s Hamburg Ballet. He has performed lead roles in Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote Pas de Deux, Giselle, Le Corsaire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cinderella, Balanchine’s Agon, Four Temperaments, and Symphony in C. Throughout his career, Mr. Tuzer has graced stages all over the world and performed with many renowned dancers including Margot Fonteyn. It was during his time at Harkness where Tanju met Patricia (Machette) Tuzer, a dancer from Dallas, Texas, who would become his beloved wife.

Ballet in 1970. During Patricia’s career in New York City she danced as a soloist and principal dancer in notable ballets such as Firebird, Schubert Variations, Abyss, Nightsong, Rodin, and Souvenirs. Patricia continued her career in Europe as a soloist before joining John Neumeier’s Hamburg Ballet. In 1977, she and Tanju brought their artistic talents to Patricia’s hometown of Dallas, where they opened the Tuzer Dance School. Together the Tuzers have grown their legacy locally and internationally as principal instructors with their acclaimed Tuzer Dance School and Artistic Directors of its affiliated company Tuzer Ballet. Tanju and Patricia’s relentless passion and dedication has earned Tuzer Dance School an undisputed reputation as one of the finest classical ballet schools of its time. Many former students enjoy successful professional careers in prominent dance companies all over the world. The Tuzers continue to inspire new generations of dancers and produce artistic and innovative productions for Tuzer Ballet.

Patricia (Machette) Tuzer began her dance training at the age of three. By her early teens she had been accepted to numerous summer workshops and received scholarships to New York City Ballet, Harkness Ballet, and Joffrey Ballet. She eventually accepted a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet before joining the Harkness

THE STORY OF THE NUTCRACKER It is Christmas Eve and Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum are preparing for a grand party while their children, Marie and Fritz, eagerly await the evening’s festivities. As guests arrive, everyone rushes to greet family and friends, except for the pretentious Frau Rattenhausen and her ill-mannered daughter, who are met with disapproval. There is merriment, dancing, and gift-giving, and the Christmas tree is lit. Suddenly, Marie’s mysterious Godfather, Herr Drosselmeier, appears. A skilled and talented toymaker, he stirs the children’s imagination with a fascinating pantomime, and captivates all with life-sized dolls and a fearsome beast. He then presents Marie with a special gift, a handmade nutcracker doll fashioned as a soldier. After the children dance with their new toys, the party draws to a close as the guests say farewell. The family retires but mystery and magic linger in the Stahlbaum home. Marie awakens, realizes she forgot her nutcracker and hurries back to the dark parlor, but is terrified to see large rats and mice scurrying about the room. After the clock strikes midnight, the menacing Rat Queen appears, but Herr Drosselmeier returns and transforms Marie’s doll into a brave Nutcracker Prince. Magically, the Christmas tree and presents grow larger than life. Marie watches in amazement as the valiant Prince leads an army of toy soldiers into a mighty battle against the rodent forces, finally slaying the evil Queen. The Prince invites Marie to the Land of Sweets, and she begins her journey through a pine forest, where delicate snowflakes and their Snow Queen swirl about. As her journey continues, fairies light her way, and Marie arrives to find Herr Drosselmeier joined by her handsome Prince in the Land of Sweets. The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them to her palace, and the courtiers admire their bravery against the Rat Queen. Delighted with her new guests, the Sugar Plum Fairy orders a feast of entertainment for Marie and the Prince. Rich Spanish Chocolate twirls before their eyes and Danish Marzipan Shepherdesses play their flutes. Sultry Arabian Coffee mesmerizes the court and the dainty Chinese Tea brings smiles to everyone. The German Gingerbread children frolic about and the Russian Trepak dancers captivate all with fantastic flips and jumps. After the enchanting Flowers perform a beautiful waltz, the Sugar Plum Fairy herself thrills the guests with an exquisite dance and Grand Pas de Deux with her Cavalier. As the dreamy evening comes to an end, Herr Drosselmeier reads to Marie, resting in her bed. She reminisces about the magical events with her beloved nutcracker by her side.

COSTUME DESIGN TAMARA CAVNAR As a young dancer in Houston, Texas, Ms. Cavnar received extensive training in ballet from the age of two, and successfully applied her dance skills to become an accomplished figure skater. She begun sewing as a young child and continued studying this field while assisting her mother, a costume headmistress for numerous renowned ballet and theater companies in the region. In 1989, Ms. Cavnar, with her husband and three children, moved to the Dallas area. Upon relocating, her daughters began studying dance at Tuzer Dance School, and Ms. Cavnar naturally volunteered to serve on the Nutcracker costume committee. Her talents and expertise for sewing and costume design were quickly recognized, and she soon became the official Costume Headmistress for Tuzer Ballet as well as Tuzer Dance School. For over twenty years, Ms. Cavnar has designed and sewn the Nutcracker costumes, including the careful craftsmanship required on the countless alterations for each year’s performers. For this and all Tuzer productions, Ms. Cavnar’s talent, creativity, and dedication to detail enable her to produce elegant works of art that tell stories themselves.

Over the past 30 years through our Outreach Program, Tuzer Ballet has granted thousands of children and families an opportunity to enjoy The Nutcracker. This year, over 500 tickets were distributed to worthy organizations serving our community.
