TESTING Call ahead of time to book an appointment if seeking medical help from a doctor or hospital. Follow the instructions you are given as you will be asked to take precautions when you attend for treatment. If you have a mask, wear it to protect others. Stay at least 1.5 metres away from other people. Cover your coughs or sneezes with your elbow.

TELL THE DOCTOR ABOUT: • Your symptoms • Any travel history • Contact with someone who has or is suspected to have COVID-19

Your doctor will arrange for the test and you will only be tested if they decide you meet the criteria: You have returned from overseas in the past 14 days and you develop respiratory illness with or without fever

You have been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days and you develop respiratory illness with or without fever

You have severe community-acquired pneumonia and there is no clear cause

You are a healthcare worker who works directly with patients and you have a respiratory illness and a fever

AFTER TESTING It may take a few days for the test results to come back. During this time, if your symptoms are serious, you will be kept in hospital and isolated from other patients to prevent the virus spreading. Go home if your doctor says you are well enough to do so. During this testing period you should:

• Self-isolate at home and do not attend work or school • Practice good hygiene • Implement social distancing • Monitor your symptoms

HOW IT SPREADS The virus can spread from person to person through: • Touching objects or surfaces (like doorhandles, tables, petrol pumps) that have cough or sneeze droplets from an infected person, and then touching your mouth or face • Contact with droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze • Close contact with an infectious person (including in the 24 hours before they started showing symptoms)

WHO IS MOST AT RISK • • • • •

Those have come into close contact with someone who has COVID-19 Those who have recently returned from being in a high risk country Sick, elderly or people with compromised immune systems (HIV or cancer) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (as they have higher rates of chronic illness) People with chronic medical conditions

• People in group residential settings or detention facilities

GOOD HYGIENE MATTERS Everyone must practice good hygiene to protect against infection and prevent the virus spreading. • Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue • Disposing of tissues properly • Using alcohol-based hand sanitisers (if available) • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces regularly • W ashing your hands often with soap and water (see our guide) This includes before and after eating and after going to the toilet • I f you feel sick, avoiding all contact with others and staying more than 1.5 metres away from others 4

HOW TO

SELF-ISOLATE SELF-QUARANTINE

YOU MUST SELF-ISOLATE IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING APPLIES TO YOU: • You have or are suspected of having COVID-19 • You have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 • You arrived in Australia after midnight on 15th March 2020

HOW TO SELF-ISOLATE

LEARN MORE

SELF-ISOLATION LASTS FOR 14 DAYS

You must stay at home to prevent the possible spread of the virus to other people, this means:

• You don't go out in public, including work, school or shopping • Food and other necessities are delivered to you and are left at your front door • No visitors, only people who usually live with you should be in your home • You do not need to wear a mask in your home • Should you need medical attention outside of your home you should always wear a mask • Contact with your family and friends should be by phone and online

OTHERS LIVING WITH YOU

If you are well, others that live with you do not need to self-isolate unless they also meet one of the isolation criteria. However, if you develop symptoms and are suspected to have COVID-19, they will be classified as close contacts and will need to be isolated.

FACE AND SURGICAL MASKS LEARN MORE If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask. There is little evidence that widespread use of surgical masks in healthy people prevents transmission in public. Surgical masks in the community are only helpful in preventing people who have coronavirus disease from spreading it to others.

VACCINATION AND TREATMENT

There is currently no vaccine or treatment for COVID-19. Scientists from around the world are working on developing a vaccine but it might be several months before one is available. 6

MANAGING ISOLATION Worrying about diseases is a normal reaction. But, excessive worrying can cause excess stress and anxiety and affect our mental health and wellbeing. This page outlines practical skills to help you cope the COVID-19 pandemic. 01. THE RIGHT INFORMATION Social media and main stream media channels can dramatise the situation causing unnecessary anxiety. Keep yourself informed with the right information from a source you can trust. We recommend following the Australian Government Department of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). 02. BE ORGANISED We feel at our most vulnerable when we feel out of control. By becoming organised and having a plan you regain control. Write a list of everything you might need if you and your family need to self isolate for two weeks. Make a list and tick it off as you go, you've got this. 03. KEEP HEALTHY ROUTINES Routines are really important for our mental wellbeing. We all have them from getting up, brushing our teeth, having a cup of morning coffee to putting on our makeup or doing our hair. These routines not only give us a sense of accomplishment but looking good and being well presented boosts our self confidence.

06. STAY CONNECTED It is important to not close yourself off from the outside world. Regular phone calls with positive friends and family members can raise your spirits. Emails, instant messages, Skype and Facetime are important tools to help reduce the feelings of isolation. 07. LESSONS LEARNED FROM HISTORY There have been multiple national and international outbreaks of infectious disease. For example, SARS, Ebola, HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis. Initially, there is often skepticism, followed by panic, followed by reality, followed by a return to normality. Stock markets will return back to normal and super markets will be replenished, it just takes time. 08. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE This is a storm in a teacup, it might not feel like it right now but things will return to normal. It's important to keep reminding yourself that things will get better and to maintain your long terms goals. Plan for a special event in the future, it's important to have things to look forward to.

04. SHUT OUT THE NOISE We talk on pages 12-13 about the pros and cons of social media. Stress and drama can be infectious and can do more harm than good. Be mindful of conversations that hinder and cause anxiety and limit your exposure to those environments that cause stress.

09. BE KIND Fear, panic and anxiety can cause us to act irrationally. Question your motivations behind your actions if they seem out of character. Hoarding of food and items might seem justified but if everyone only took what they needed there would be enough supplies for everyone. Offer to share your spares.

05. FOCUS ON THE POSITIVES It can be very easy to slip in to dark pessimistic thoughts and brood on how catastrophic this could be. Challenge your mental channel if you start to think like this and try to balance it out with a positive one. 14 days of isolation gives me the time to finish that project or read that book I've been meaning to finish.

10. KEEP ACTIVE If you normally enjoy an outdoor activity like running or bike riding, living with selfisolation can cause real physical withdrawal. Look at other ways to exercise. For example, there are a lot of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on YouTube that you could follow or enjoy the relaxation you get from yoga and Pilates.
