Sarina is a high growth area of Qld. and the region has massive employment upside with resources sector and the nearby Hay Point port. Recent changes to the resources industry locally has meant that the “fly in/fly out” workforce has been substantially replaced by the “drive in/drive out” workforce, and this puts Sarina in an excellent position. With changes to road infrastructure, Sarina is likely to grow in importance, as the ring road under construction will create a bypass of Mackay for a substantial portion of traffic. This means that as a ‘stopping off point’ between Rockhampton and Townsville for road traffic, Sarina is in an ideal location to benefit. When driving north on the Bruce Highway, Sarina is the first substantial stopping point for 300*km.

• Hay Point (6 km away from Sarina) one of the largest coal ports in the world, and has two separate coal terminals, Hay Point Coal Terminal (HPCT) and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCP). The workforce for these terminals and many other resource projects in the area live in Sarina, Mackay and other attractive nearby communities. HPCT &DBCP export primarily metallurgical coal, a key resource in the steel-making process. A large number of this workforce need to drive through Sarina to get to their work (if they do not already live here) and this makes the retail sector of Sarina of strategic value. • Sarina Hospital development scheduled to commence in 2023 ($43million dollar development). Detailed design for the hospital is in process.

WHY THE BOWEN BASIN REGION? Mackay’s employment, investment and development opportunities, buoyant economy and lifestyle attributes are just some of the many positive aspects that encourage people to live, work and play in the Mackay region. The region has experienced the most prolonged period of growth in recent history and Mackay has established itself as a modern, regional city. The region’s growth is fuelled by the strength of our diversified economy, led by our globally recognised resource and engineering sector, resurging agribusiness, and growth in construction, education, logistics and tourism. Mackay is the gateway to the rich coal deposits in the Bowen and Galilee Basins and hosts much of the engineering, manufacturing and resource service industries supporting the wider Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday economies. Only an hour’s flight from Brisbane, the region boasts many benefits of a fast-growing coastal city. Its coastal location is complemented by its spectacular natural environment, which includes 31 beaches, a picturesque blue river and pristine rainforest hinterland. Mackay also boasts easy access to the world-famous Whitsunday Islands, a group of 74 pristine islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.
