When choosing a company to install a Solar Power System on your home, you need to take a few items into consideration. The Company that installs your solar power system is ultimately responsible for the warranties and the performance of the system. Consider choosing a reputable local company, that is situated in your local area, with an office/showroom that you can call into at any time to discuss your concerns regarding your new Solar System. Purchasing a Solar System from a call centre or online business will result in the use of contracted labour and this can prove to be difficult should you need warranty issues/claims resolved. Often this type of business will not be able to offer ongoing support or advice. Here at UNI-Industries we take the time to discuss your needs and then offer you a Solar Power system that best suits your requirements and budget. We can tailor systems and products to suit all budgets and are happy to give honest advice. Our aim is to make your Solar System purchase an honest and informative experience. Uni-Industries pride themselves in quality workmanship and after-sales service.

What size solar system do you need? • how much are you spending each quarter and how many kwh`s/day are you using on average; • when are you using your power; and • how many solar panels can we install on your roof. Energex will now allow installs up to 10kw of inverter capacity to a single-phase installation, with the condition that the system is to be export limited to 5kw. This means that if you are making 10kw of power from your solar system and not using any of the power in the house, the system will ramp the production down so there is only 5kw feeding back into the grid. As an example, if you have a swimming pool, electric hot water system and a couple of fridges running during the day, you will be self-consuming the production over the 5kw export limit. In summary, if you have some daytime load, a large power bill and enough roof space, one of our larger Solar Power systems would be of great benefit in reducing your energy costs.

Why would you install such a large solar system if most of it is just going to feed back into the grid? The feed in tariff paid by the Retailers has been on an upward trajectory over the last few years. You can now receive up to $0.20c/kwh feed in tariff for the excess production that will feed back into the grid from your Solar Power System. Here is an example of how you can benefit from installing a system of this size: Installing 7.8kw of panel capacity connected to a 6kw inverter will produce on average 32kwh`s/day. If you self-consume 12kwh`s/day from the production at the grid rate of $0.27c/kwh and feed the other 20kwh`s of production back into the grid at the feed in tariff rate of $0.20c/kwh (AGL), the daily benefit of this system will be $7.24/day x 91 days = $658/quarter x 4 = $2,632/year benefit from the 7.8kw solar power system. Our 7.8kw systems start at $5,990 inc GST, and with a $2,632/year benefit, the system will pay for itself in under 2.3 years.

Matt Leacy’s top tips

Kid-proofing outdoor spaces

PHOTOS BY JASON BUSCH

WITH JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS UNDERWAY AND THE COUNTDOWN TO SPRING WELL AND TRULY ON, NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO THINK ABOUT KID-PROOFING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES.

HOME

L

andart Landscapes’ Matt Leacy shares his top tips for creating safe and engaging outdoor spaces that not only look great, but that kids can enjoy weekends and holidays. “You don’t need to compromise your outdoor aesthetic to ensure a safe and fun backyard; with smart and strategic landscape design, you can achieve both – and it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg,” says Matt. SOFTEN SURFACES “If you have kids running around frequently, it’s worth looking at how you can soften surfaces to decrease the chance and severity of damage that can come with falls, accidents “Cut back trees and plants with sharp branches – and consider introducing some soft plantings, hedges and groundcovers to act as barriers around potentially dangerous garden beds and hardscapes.” “In terms of plantings that look great and work to soften the environment, the best choice depends partly on your particular outdoor space and aesthetic,” Matt says. “Wooly Bush (Adenanthos) is the softest most beautiful plant to touch. Kids love them because they look a little pine-like and spikey, but when you touch them they are soft and silky.” “For groundcovers, I recommend Dymondia, Zoysia and Dichondra, as these can be walked over without being destroyed. “They are also relatively hardy and able to contend with cooler weather conditions.” “Synthetic grasses are also another good option for softening hard ground surfaces,” Matt says. “They can be laid directly over concrete to help soften and green-up an area.”

‛‛

KIDS WILL BE LESS LIKELY TO HANG AROUND DODGY AREAS IF YOU’VE CREATED A SAFE AND ENGAGING OUTDOOR SPACE WITH LOTS OF FUN AND ENGAGING ACTIVITIES. AS A STARTING POINT, THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR KIDS LOVE TO DO AND THEN INTRODUCE ELEMENTS ACCORDINGLY.

’’

“If you have lots of slippery surfaces in areas like patios, walkways and swimming pool decks, you might consider adding some non-skid, non-slip surfaces such as pavers or rubber flooring to reduce the risks of falls,” says Matt. “Also, avoid any potentially toxic or prickly plants. Steer clear of varieties like cactuses, Oleander (as a general rule, anything with white sap) hydrangeas, chillies, azaleas, agave, and some succulents – to name a few.” DESIGN AND ZONE YOUR LANDSCAPE TO ATTRACT KIDS TO SAFE AREAS “Kids will be less likely to hang around dodgy areas if you’ve created a safe and engaging outdoor space with lots of fun and engaging activities. As a starting point, think about what your kids love to do and then introduce elements accordingly,” Matt says. 21

HOME

“If they love to draw, you might look to install a little wall or fence for them to use as a chalk board. Large format pavers can also double as hop scotch squares and on-ground chalk boards.” “Other kid-friendly outdoor features include swing sets, rope swings, in-built trampolines, sandpit areas and mounted and stationed cubby houses,” Matt adds. “If you’re open to using synthetic grass in a kids’ zone, a putt putt green can also a fun option to help keep the kids occupied and develop their hand-eye coordination. Mini-golf is also an activity that can be done in a group or individually, so it’s perfect no matter how many children you have. “Add some comfy beanbags, pillows and camping chairs to the kids’ zone, and your children will have little reason to spend time anywhere else.

“When deciding where to create a kids’ zone in the backyard, it’s important to consider several factors,” says Matt. “Think about what area will work best in terms of preserving your existing outdoor aesthetic, as well as where you’ll be able to easily supervise the kids and ensure they’re properly protected from the elements – rain and sun included. “Areas surrounded by large, secure trees can work well, but you’ll need to be diligent with pruning to prevent dangerous falling branches and the like – especially in windy conditions and environments. “And if you don’t have much access to natural shade or wind-cover, man-made options like retractable awnings, big beach umbrellas and gazebos can be options worth considering so that the space can be used by kids regardless of the weather.”

HOME

POOL SAFETY ESSENTIALS “Every Australian state and territory has jurisdictionspecific pool fencing laws aimed at reducing risks associated with pool drownings,” says Matt. “All pools need to be fenced in compliance with local building codes and registered with local council.” “There are also minimum requirements pertaining to the height and size of security latches, gaps and horizontal pales. Note that pool fence rules can differ depending on what state or territory you live in, so it’s best to contact your local council if you’re unsure about what requirements apply to you,” Matt adds. “When installing a pool fence, it’s also worth taking the time to properly consider the design of the fence and how it will affect the existing space – both from a practical and aesthetic perspective,” says Matt. “An ugly pool fence can significantly degrade the look, feel and value of an outdoor space – so it’s advisable to engage a professional pool and landscape designer to ensure you get the choice and process right. “A professional designer will help to marry compliance and design, matching the need

for safety with the need for a fence that enhances your overall outdoor space. “They’ll consider things like the ideal material for the fence, as well as how factors such as level-changes and garden beds can be utilised to integrate the fence into the rest of the backyard and make it disappear as much as possible.” MATT LEACY HAS MORE THAN 20 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE IN DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE SERVICES ACROSS LANDSCAPING AND POOL INSTALLATION FOR BOTH RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES. HE IS A REGULAR MEDIA COMMENTATOR AND COLUMN WRITER AND ALSO CO-HOSTED CHANNEL NINE’S GARDEN GURUS AND THREE SEASONS OF DOMESTIC BLITZ, AS WELL AS RECENTLY FEATURING ON ABC TV’S DREAM GARDENS AND CHANNEL 10’S STUDIO 10.
