1. Mori Sanjo is acclaimed as the epitome of musicality amongst the different genres of Korean traditional music. The virtuoso techniques of performers aptly oscillate between tension and relaxation. Subtle and delicate, yet broad and powerful, vibrato and bowing techniques complement each other. Impromptu performance with exciting rhythms takes the beauty of sanjo to a new height. 2. Milyang An impromptu, based on Milyang Arirang, together with its crisp and rhythmical Gyeongsang-do folk melody and free jazz, impresses many in a sophisticated way. 3. Hey Ya! “Hey Ya!” is a remake of the Korean folk song “Ongheya”. This new piece features Western touches in rhythm and sounds modern, but follows the Korean folk music style. Even someone who has never heard “Ongheya” before can easily catch the original melody.

1. Hangeul For the 2007 S/S Zen and 2006 F/W Moonlight Shadow collections, Korea’s cultural heritage hangeul was turned into patterns. In Moonlight Shadow, handwritten letters from Lie’s acquaintances were overlaid on contemporary yet Baroque-style silhouettes. Hangeul was also written on the silhouettes - boldly expressing resolute brushstrokes, smudgy ink, and circular forms - while at the same time highlighting the beauty of negative spaces. 2. Traditional Windows Lie Sang Bong’s 2013 F/W collection was inspired by vintage window frames from Korean traditional houses. Graphic lines that emerged from the examination of the structures and patterns of the window frames are also reflected in the volumes of dresses and coats. The sensuality of the cuts and the inner strength of women is referenced by the structural elements created by the interplay of textures, tailoring and patterns. 3. Dancheong Lie Sang Bong’s inspiration for 2012 S/S collection comes from traditional, Korean architecture elements known as “Dancheong”, which is the art of decorative colors painted on wooden buildings and artifacts for the purpose of style. The collection is about connecting the past, present and future together by going beyond time and spaces with the theme.

LIE SANG BONG “One good thing about being a fashion designer is that you can live in different ages,” states Lie Sang Bong, one of Korea’s most preeminent designers. With a growing presence in Europe, the US, the Middle East, and Russia, Lie’s diverse influences range from the imperial love affair of Napoleon and Josephine, Korean poetry and calligraphy, Cubism, Bauhaus design to 1930s film noir heroines. After presenting his bold first collection, “The Reincarnation” in 1993 at Seoul Fashion Week, Lie quickly caught the eyes of Korea’s most notable fashionistas. Just a few years later the mayor of Seoul voted him the “Best Designer of the Year,” acknowledging the perpetual creativity and growing commercial success that set him above his peers. “The Lost Memoir,” his 2002 debut in Paris, successfully launched his signature designs on the Paris market. He has been based in Paris ever since. Lie’s ready-to-wear collections for women show the perfect pairing of architectural silhouettes with the feminine form. Splashes of rich reds and violets are among the energetic colors that define his vivid palette. His mastery of voluminous and geometric shapes, and his exquisite use of pleats bring to life a unique vision. His marriage of elegant French fashion with exquisite Oriental sensibilities generates pieces with an unmistakable visual personality that he cultivates in the most natural way. With his dramatic and poetic designs, it is not surprising that Lie came from a theatrical background.

Lie’s reputation is at an all-time high, and he holds the status as one of the most influential people in South Korea. Not only has he dressed one of the country’s First Ladies, he has also collaborated with top Korean companies such as Samsung, LG, KT & G, and Kuemho to create a “Lie Sang Bong” limited edition mobile phone, as well as computer designs, cigarettes, home décor, and interior designs. Known around the world as the “Korean McQueen,” he has been featured in numerous publications including Le Figaro, Telegraph, the New York Times, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Oyster, Standard, and W Magazine. Lie has dressed worldrenowned celebrities including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Peaches, Lindsay Lohan, and Juliette Binoche. As an artist he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries in Korea, the US, Europe, and the UK to promote fashion as an art form. Yet, Lie believes fashion should not focus on artistry to the point of becoming un-wearable. His fashion is defined by the lifestyle and culture of the people who wear it.

It is also a retrospective of Korean traditional music’s past, creating the present toward the future. Her Korean New Music group attempts to reach a balance between Korean traditional music and the modern age. Kang Eunil & HaegumPlus, Yoshida Brothers of Japan and 12 Ladies Music Chambers of China are the most distinguished groups representing Asia with their own indigenous instruments. Kang Eunil & HaegumPlus use Korean traditional music as their text and express pure crossover music spanning from Asia to the West. Kang’s music displays the Haegum’s potential and place in the global context. The Haegum originally has a slow and rough tone. However, Kang Eunil translates the tradition into a new music full of beautiful melodies and great temperance. Her music approaches us as a lyric poem. Her strong and gracious bowing will make her fans happy with renewed appreciation of Korean music’s potential and give foreigners, who are unfamiliar with Korean music, an opportunity to share in a universal musical experience.
