Quest Serviced Apartments

Quest Serviced Apartments – accommodating business The Quest for a new generation of franchisees

I

f you ever travel for business, chances are you’ve stayed with us as a guest. Quest Serviced Apartments has been Australia’s leading business format franchise system in the accommodation industry since 1988 and is now seeking a new generation of talented and energetic franchisees to keep up with the company’s rapid expansion. Twenty five years ago, accommodation choices for business travellers were few and far between: motels, pubs or upmarket city high-rise hotels. None of these had any of the flexibility or facilities required by business people who were on the road for several nights, working away from home. It was in this environment that Paul Constantinou developed the Quest Serviced Apartments concept. The franchise network has now grown to more than 150 properties across Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, focusing primarily on the Australian Business Traveller. The Quest business model takes away some of the major challenges to achieving success in small business, with the support of one of Australia’s most recognisable brands. The franchisees at each of the company’s 150 properties live in the towns and cities where their business is based; get to know their customers, build relationships with them and make their lives away from home when travelling for work as easy as possible.

WHY BUY A QUEST FRANCHISE? • You’re supported by a winning formula. We’ve created a business model that takes away some of the

4

major challenges to achieving success in small business, with the support of one of Australia’s most recognisable brands. • There’s no guesswork. We have developed a well-defined site selection process, which can involve years of research, taking into account both the economic situation of the target location, as well as extensive discussions with our corporate customers forecasting where they will need to be. • Strength of our size. Quest has a dedicated team of national account managers who have the daily responsibility of managing the relationship with the key national clients in their industry portfolio, coordinating the tendering for these accounts. Quest’s relationships with its key corporate customers provide franchisees with an opportunity to participate in centrally coordinated national tenders.

• We need our franchisees to be energetic, people-orientated and committed to working within our franchise system framework.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? • You don’t need a background in hospitality to become a Quest franchisee, but you do need a proven track record in running a business or leading a team within a corporate environment. And you do need to be prepared to immerse yourself in the day-to-day running of your business.

NightOwl

NightOwl – our strength is convenience A NightOwl and Meninga partnership represents strong years ahead

N

ightOwl Convenience’s outlook for the second half of 2013 is strong and through its partnership with rugby league legend Mal Meninga, the iconic Queensland network’s offering is set to get even stronger. Earlier this year NightOwl franchisor Adam Adams, an avid football supporter, invited Mal Meninga to join the brand. With Mal Meninga’s experience in the fruit and vegetable industry extending more than 10 years, Adams knew NightOwl could benefit from the coach and former player’s profile. The sporting icon’s involvement with NightOwl will extend further than just being a brand ambassador; the network is an exclusive stockist of his fruit and vegetable range, Mal Meninga Fresh. “When Adam asked me to join NightOwl, I was excited to accept. It allows me, and my brand, Mal Meninga Fresh, to remain out in the marketplace,” Mal Meninga said. “A lot of retired rugby league players go into pubs or clubs but I have a real interest in healthy lifestyles and it’s not just about exercise, it’s also about healthy eating and that’s why I got involved in the fruit and vegetable industry.” The partnership marks the first time a high profile sportsman or celebrity has become part of the brand, since NightOwl began as a single store in 1975. “Having Mal on board is a great opportunity to drive NightOwl’s fresh food offering, while encouraging families to improve their lifestyles, starting with healthy eating,” Adams said. Mal Meninga said his profile would serve two purposes with NightOwl.

8

: July 2013

Mal Meninga brings his food range exclusively to the NightOwl network

“The NightOwl and Mal Meninga partnership represents a ‘brand within a brand’. It will assist me to promote healthy eating and healthy lifestyles, while also contributing to encourage NightOwl’s expansion,” he said.

THE SYSTEM Franchising since 1987, NightOwl now has 66 stores; the majority in Queensland, two stores in northern New South Wales and one store in Melbourne, Victoria. “NightOwl over the years has grown and adapted to what our customers need as well as what our potential franchisees require to become successful operators,” Adams said. “Our strength is convenience and we achieve this by making the customer experience easier and enjoyable and having training models and systems in place to develop our franchisees. “For customers, it is through our

convenient locations, stocking products appropriate for each location and overall, through offering more choice, more value. For our franchisees, it is our systems and procedures delivered through our ongoing training models and the strength of our franchise support office. “We can train anyone from any background who has passion and drive to become a successful NightOwl franchisee,” he said. NightOwl Convenience began as one store in 1975 in Auchenflower, Brisbane and now has 66 stores in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The brand takes pride in its range throughout all stores, offering “more choice more value” to time-poor customers.

Snap-on Tools

Snap-on Tools – easing the pressure with private funding Forget the banks and snap up this great opportunity from one of the largest non-food franchises

S

nap-on Tools Australia defies traditional lenders by successfully establishing a direct lending program to franchisees. One of the largest non-food franchise companies in the world, Snap-on Tools has been in the tool manufacturing and distribution business for more than 90 years. Eighteen months ago, the Australian business successfully introduced a Credit Program with the aim of providing private funding for potential franchisees. Snapon believes the program represents the beginning of a trend in successful multinational retail operations competing with traditional lenders in the franchise market. To date more than 34 new franchisees have taken up the offer, representing a significant percentage of the business’ yearly franchisee intake. “We are witnessing a changing economic paradigm in retail, and particularly in franchising internationally,” says Nick Hudson, national franchise manager for Snap-on Tools. “Throughout the world there is pressure on the retail model – from a softening in demand for product, right through to a restriction on lending for people interested in investing in a franchise. We decided to circumvent this, and inject much needed funding into the system ourselves.” Entry prices in Australia for many household name franchises are extremely high – ranging from $200,000 right through to $1 million – meaning that a potential franchisee naturally looks to a lender to assist them in making the investment. Snap-on Tools Australia

10

: July 2013

Snap On franchisees are retailing on the road

recognised that although its franchise investment is at the lower end of the scale, securing access to funds was a significant barrier to many who genuinely wished to become part of the franchise network.

CREDIT PROGRAM With an overflow of customers and new territories in need of a franchisee, the Credit Program presented a straightforward solution. “We have accreditation with the major banks,” explains Hudson. “We are a reputable and solid business turning over $71 million last year in Australia alone. It is fortunate we are in the position to provide finance sourced purely from the Snap-on network. In the majority of cases there is no need for a bank to become involved in a franchisee’s decision. “Prior to the commencement of the Credit Program, our franchisees have typically been at the mercy of bank

variable interest rates. The Program provides fixed interest rates, no ongoing fees or additional charges to franchisees, and our credit is unsecured except for a line against the assets of the franchise itself,” says Hudson. Snap-on Tools Australia is the only Australian franchise operation to offer this innovative program for franchisees.

Crave

Crave frozen yogurt The next stage of evolution in franchising

W

hy do 80 percent of businesses fail in the first five years while 80 percent of franchises still operate successfully in the same time frame? Why did Subway overtake McDonald’s as the number one franchise in the world? Why did McDonald’s introduce a healthy options menu as part of their product offering? These questions, and many more, were asked over the 18 month period we spent bringing Crave Frozen Yogurt to Australia. The answers we found helped us to develop one of the sharpest, most intelligent and high ROI business models in the world today.

WHY FRANCHISING? Setting up your own business requires a very resilient personality and not many people realise what is involved. Here are just a few of the things you need to think about: Systems, business planning, brand recognition and message, product development, HR and recruitment, management and leadership, marketing and advertising, market research, fit-out, point of sale solutions, security, quality control, site selection, lease negotiations, taxes and accounting, legals and insurances, trademarking and intellectual property. Imagine the knowledge you would need to execute all this properly! A successful turn-key franchise will shorten your learning curve and save you a lot of time, money and effort. What makes an exceptional franchise? McDonalds was the number one

12

: July 2013

franchise in the world because it had a simple, model run by teenagers with little experience. Subway surpassed McDonalds because it took that concept and added the following: • lower entry cost • healthier food options • simpler product offering, menu and operations • customer empowerment – customers got to choose what they wanted on their sub!

ENTER FROZEN YOGURT Frozen yogurt is now one of the fastest growing franchise models in Australia and the world because it takes what Subway has done and simplified it even further. • ONE single, healthy product • No marketing – just smart location selection • Even lower entry cost • self service – the ultimate customer empowerment Crave takes this further with the lowest set-up cost and royalty fees on the market, compact and intelligently designed stores and the world’s only seven handle machine giving our customers more choice per store, in a smaller footprint than anyone else. Couple this with: • a total turn-key business solution • a dedicated national service team for your Elvaria Machinery • a dedicated national franchise support team to help you at launch and every step of the way

Crave Frozen Yogurt

• a branding and colour scheme that stands out from the crowd And the Crave investment opportunity becomes a hard one to match. In fact, we challenge you to find a smarter franchise investment opportunity. Contact us to find out more now.

Telechoice

Telechoice – the people’s choice Delivering the service and quality that customers want

L

eading telecommunications retailer, TeleChoice has entered into a new wholesale relationship with Telstra to provide 3G post-paid mobiles using part of Telstra’s 3G mobile network. Ehab Abdou and Paul Reeves, TeleChoice directors, say, “This is the biggest thing to happen to TeleChoice and our 100 national outlets since our initial launch almost 18 years ago. Our customers are our lifeblood – and quite frankly they’ve been crying out for greater value, flexibility, transparency and great coverage. “This agreement with Telstra Wholesale has allowed us to gain greater control over our product and service offering. We are now in a better position than ever to be able to deliver the quality products and services that our customers want, using a 3G mobile footprint that covers 1.26 million square kilometres. “This is all part of a larger effort by TeleChoice to truly be The People’s Choice. That’s why we’ve also moved to a new pricing platform that is much easier for customers to understand: separating the cost of the phone from the cost of the call plan. This change ensures the cost of a customer’s phone will no longer drive up the price of their monthly call plan. “With the new TeleChoice plans, however, the phone and call plan costs are always separate, so customers know exactly what they’re paying for. Customers simply select their preferred call plan, and then either use their current mobile, buy a new one outright or make payments over 12 or 24 months.

16

: July 2013

Telechoice has just signed a deal with Telstra

“Another great advantage of separating the phone and call plan costs is that now customers can trade in their mobile at any point and upgrade to a new phone without having to wait for their call plan to finish. “Leveraging many years of experience in mobiles we have transformed our business to bring together the products that best suit the evolving needs of our customers. Watch this space in the coming months,” Abdou says.

training. Ongoing training is supported by the company’s Learning Management System software that enables dealers to stay knowledgeable about all the latest product releases, pricing changes and technology updates. A dedicated team at head office supports the dealers in the operational side of the business. This is a successful network because it has so many successful network partners.

SET UP TO WIN A typical TeleChoice customer can save about $50 to $100 a month on its mobile, internet and home telephone plans. That is why this is an opportune time to become a TeleChoice licensed store operator. It all starts with a thorough process to ensure the opportunity matches your goals and expectations. This is followed with four weeks comprehensive

Gelatissimo

Gelatissimo – artisan gelato Irresistible for customers and franchisees

T

he Gelatissimo brand has been built on a commitment to using the perfect combination of the finest ingredients to produce irresistible artisan gelato made fresh daily in store. Last year marked a decade of operation as one of Australia’s most recognizable and successful franchises. Gelatissimo’s ingredients for success include a strong cohesive senior management team, steady and sustainable Australian and international expansion, underpinned by astute franchisee selection, distinctive marketing and an ongoing commitment to product innovation and training. Joint CEOs, Domenico and Marco Lopresti, whose Italian heritage means they have lived and breathed gelato for most of their lives, lead Gelatissimo’s talented team. Australian expansions continues apace, with Gelatissimo using extensive experience for site selection ensuring new outlets are ideally located, and supporting its franchisees with lease negotiation and store fit-outs. Gelato is proving to be an international language with gelaterias in Kuwait, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Italy. Unlike some franchises, Gelatissimo has rejected undisciplined growth that disadvantages existing franchisees and weakens the entire network. Its recruitment process has been refined where new franchisees are only accepted once they have displayed commitment to product excellence, customer service and a passion of the brand and its products.

18

: July 2013

Franchisee training is important to Gelatissimo’s success. New recruits are trained in business planning, sales, local store marketing, coffee and gelato making, food safety, equipment hygiene and maintenance, inventory and cash management, staff management, customer service and loyalty building. Franchisees receive ongoing training and regular visits from field staff to ensure exacting standards of production and customer services are upheld. In 2012 Gelatissimo appointed gelato expert Anna Temellini, who relocated from Italy, as product training and development manager with a key role of developing and running the new Gelatissimo Accademia Del Gelato, training franchisees in advanced gelato production. A dedicated marketing team produces ongoing product promotions, competitions and consumer activities that keep the brand top of mind. Brotzeit

Brotzeit – German bier bar & restaurant Award winning Bavarian cuisine

B

rotzeit is a Singapore brand, conceived in 2006 to introduce authentic Bavarian cuisine accompanied by premium German beers in a chic and contemporary setting. “Brotzeit” is a typical Bavarian expression– “Brot” being German for bread and “Zeit” for time, referring to a cosy meal complemented by fresh beer. Brotzeit began franchising its current business model in 2010. In a span of just over two years, it has become a top-of-class franchisor and was recently awarded the Singapore ‘Franchisor of the Year’ Award by the Franchising and Licensing Association of Singapore (FLA). The awards recognize the most successful franchise businesses in Singapore. Brotzeit has sold into 10 franchise markets, in addition to its corporate market, and currently operates 13 outlets in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and most recently in the Philippines and Thailand. All Brotzeit outlets engage guests with chic décor through the use of German inspired wooden benches and a long wooden bar counter. The contemporary bier bar possesses a playful charm with its characteristic signature mural showing the history and development of German beer culture. Brotzeit serves a wide selection of pure German beers, made according to time honoured German beer-making traditions that respect the Purity Law of 1516. All beers are made using pure spring water and are paired with authentic Bavarian dishes. Some of the other key features that sets Brotzeit apart include: • The world’s leading German concept operating multi-nationally • Authentic Bavarian cuisine and premium

quality beers imported from Germany • Unique proprietary recipes for seven types of sausages • Specially styled music system

FRANCHISING MODEL Brotzeit does not sell single-unit franchises in a new market. Instead it has chosen to develop by selling market areas, which require the franchise developer to open a number of units, typically three to six in a period of six years. Brotzeit is currently searching for potential franchisees who are excited about the concept and wish to be part of a new franchise system entering Australia. Franchisees have full access to the Brotzeit Franchise Resource Centre, where they can download manuals, marketing materials and R&D items. Each franchisee outlet is given its own website under the www.brotzeit.co domain.

Brotzeit will provide both initial and ongoing support to every franchisee, including but not limited to: • Initial support • Site evaluation and approvals • Suppliers and vendors identification • Restaurant fit-out and set-up • Franchisee training • Store opening support • Ongoing support • Operations efficiency • Research and development • Marketing • Finance and reporting.

National National Franchise Franchise Insurance Insurance Brokers Brokers

National Franchise Insurance Brokers – protecting your business NFIB is filling a void in the Australian insurance market by offering compressive and complete insurance cover for franchised business at the lowest cost

W

e live exceedingly busy lives and no one can vouch for that more than small business owners, particularly those who run franchised business. Between handling the finances, placing orders, managing staff and dealing with the day to day tasks associated with getting the business up and running, finding suitable and quality business insurance becomes a hassle. National Franchise Insurance Brokers understands the pressures of these franchisees and has made it easier to purchase business insurance online. In just four clicks, the franchisee can choose their cover, purchase their insurance and log off all in under 10 minutes.

Dedicated online provider of insurance cover for franchisees, franchisors and franchised businesses

JUST FOUR CLICKS Based around the brand’s website MYNFIB.com.au this highly simplified online insurance platform means that any franchised business can be insured in just four clicks of a computer mouse. Only four pieces of basic information are required in order for NFIB to arrange cover for a franchised business: • The value of the franchised business • The gross profit of the franchised business • The level of public liability required by the franchised business • Whether or not machinery breakdown is required by the franchised business

business and hours of searching for suitable insurance cover becomes a thing of the past as NFIB offers the most comprehensive, low-cost cover for franchisees. “Like anyone who’s running a smallto medium-size business, franchisees have better things to do than spend a day filling out forms and making phone calls and sending faxes,” says NFIB executive director, Darryl Morris “We’ve boiled the insurance process right down so that now it’s just a simple matter of sitting down, visiting our website and the entire process can be completed in a couple of minutes at the most.”

MAKING IT SIMPLE Simplifying this usually tedious and strenuous process ensures the franchisee can get right back to managing their

cover for franchised business at the lowest cost. Not only are the premiums extremely competitive but the advanced IT system built for the NFIB platform makes the process straight forward and simple for the customer.

COST CONSCIOUS NFIB is filling a void in the Australian insurance market by offering comprehensive and complete insurance

CUSTOMER CARE NFIB places a strong emphasis on ensuring the client is taken care of so in the event of a claim the customer can be assured they will receive first rate treatment and enjoy exceptional customer service. “From our perspective and based on the daily feedback we get from our clients, the benefits of our service are twofold: our insurance premiums are very low and the time it takes to insure with us is negligible so it really is a winwin for all our clients,” states Morris.

S

umoSalad celebrates its 10th birthday this year, having served more than 30 million salads since its first store opening in Sydney’s CBD. Today, SumoSalad is now one of Australia’s largest and most awarded healthy fast food franchises. The company’s strong brand presence and proven business model has helped to drive its success, with systems and procedures that have been tried and tested by SumoSalad over the past decade. According to founder and CEO of SumoSalad, Luke Baylis, it’s the company’s business model that offers the greatest value to potential franchisees. “We’ve been in the game for 10 years and there is no other business in this industry that has had this kind of longevity,” says Baylis. “There’s also a difference in the quality and taste of products at SumoSalad, which is a real competitive advantage.”

PASSION The role of SumoSalad’s founder and CEO, Luke Baylis, in the development of the business – from its inception to managing a recent investment from the Tulla Group in December 2012 – brings a passion for the business that is seldom found in franchised organisations of this kind. Access to senior leaders like Luke, as well as a network of experienced professionals supporting the operational and marketing efforts of the business, is something that every new and existing franchisee can take advantage of. “The security that comes with this kind of business heritage is invaluable,” says

Kwik Kopy

Kwik Kopy – award winning print and design Highest ranking B2B in Top 10 list of Australian franchises

T

he best way to succeed in a franchise is with a franchisor who offers a strong franchise model and great support. Just ask Brian and Jane Heydon, owners of Kwik Kopy Castle Hill and winners of the Kwik Kopy 2013 Franchise of the Year award. “We are strong advocates of the business and have always seen the great opportunity that exists within the Kwik Kopy system,” they say. Kwik Kopy is an award-winning provider of graphic design, printing and marketing services with more than 100 B2B franchises operating throughout Australia. What’s more you don’t require any previous experience in printing or design to become a franchisee in the network. As a Kwik Kopy franchisee, you’re talking with business clients who value professionalism and quality as much as value and who look for long-term business partners. Brian and Jane believe the business model, which includes a strong franchise support system, delivers definite benefits and makes owning a Kwik Kopy business a sound investment. “The strength of the brand is evident and our business has benefited from excellent marketing support,” Brian and Jane say. The franchise has a proven franchise track record, strong brand recognition and a system that gives franchises a real lift into a successful business. “We have been able to increase revenue every year since we first bought the business back in 2003,” the couple say. Kwik Kopy offers its franchisees sound business and financial analysis and advice,

In the latest ‘Top Franchise’ survey results from independent market research house 10 Thousand Feet; Kwik Kopy is rated over 20 percent better than the industry average for support in both frequency of contact and quality of mentoring and guidance. Brian and Jane agree that once up and running, franchisees are well supported. “There are definite benefits to being part of such a strong national franchise community. The franchise system has been developed to provide owners with the tools necessary to make them successful.” Such tools include the launch of userfriendly online sales and marketing portals that are also used to share best practice tips and franchisee case studies. This has allowed for better collaboration and sharing of knowledge [for knowledge sharing Kwik Kopy is rated 29 percent better than the industry average].

Kwik Kopy is a B2B franchise system

The ability to respond quickly to everchanging market demands is another significant benefit of owning a business within a successful national franchise company. Kwik Kopy has proved itself to be a consistent performer and is currently number two in the Top 10 list of franchises in Australia and the highest ranking B2B.

Outback Jacks

Outback Jacks Bar and Grill – relaxed casual dining Join the fastest growing steakhouse chain

T

he story of Outback Jacks Bar and Grill is the outcome of years of experience and hard work within the industry, extensive market research and a mission to fill a niche in the market. The Outback Jacks brand or OBJs as it has become affectionately known, is an exciting chain of restaurants offering relaxed casual dining with full bar facilities and one of the largest selections of steaks in the country. REGIONAL MASTERS Outback Jacks is one of the fastest growing steakhouse franchises in Australia. One of the key aspects to this unprecedented growth has been the implementation of a regional master franchise system. The benefits of the master franchise system are numerous: you have the benefit of one strong vision and direction being led by the national franchisor as well as the benefit of franchisees at store level developing close working relationships and receiving close level support from the master franchisees who have a vested interest in the success of each franchise business. “Each master franchisee measures their success by the success of the franchise stores in their region. This has allowed Outback Jacks to expand into new areas while maintaining the level of support to franchisees that has made our business so successful over the past seven years,” says Colby Smith, general manager of operations for the group. “Our store level franchisees often comment on how our model offers them personalised service and strong support systems.”

32 38

:: January 2013 July 2013

GREAT LOCATIONS Evidence of the success of this system is shown in the current selection of new sites available within Outback Jacks – there are currently sites available in NSW, ACT, Qld, WA and the NT. Strong Growth has always been a key factor in the success of Outback Jacks; in the last 12 months six new sites have opened for business with a seventh slated to open in early 2013. Buying power is another key factor in the success of this flourishing concept. Outback Jacks has secured national supply contracts with some of the largest supply partners in the country. This allows franchisees to focus on the day to day operations of

their stores, confident that they are purchasing their stock at the best possible quality and price. If you are looking for a franchise that offers long term security, personal support systems and national buying power that can ensure the best possible outcomes for its franchisees, then the steakhouse chain Outback Jacks may be for you.

Bakers Delight

Bakers Delight – it’s all in the dough An established business model is a great fit

W

hen Bevan Pope and his wife Mel moved from a rural South African farming community to South Australia five years ago, it was with a dream to secure their future. “After the move, we wanted to do something for ourselves. We were after an established business model and something that was involved in everyday customer interaction. Bakers Delight was a great fit.” Bevan’s experience as a farmer meant he not only had a solid understanding of running a business, but also appreciated the amount of work involved in producing something from scratch. Despite having no baking experience he contacted Bakers Delight’s franchise recruitment team and began the process of changing his career. After spending a few weeks going through what life as a franchisee and baker would be like with other Bakers Delight franchisees, Bevan started his training: four months alongside a fellow franchisee, learning everything from baking and sales to accounting and staff management. “The training was very exciting and challenging. I was able to train alongside someone who had been through what I was doing and proved a great mentor. He took me through the ‘ins and outs’ of baking quality products from scratch, as well as how to improve my sales and staff performance,” says Bevan. “It meant I had to get used to early mornings again, and it’s a little bit different to the wide open pastures I’d been working in, but when you know you’re building a future for your family, it’s all worth it.”

40

: July 2013

Bevan and Mel Pope run the Bakers Delight North Adelaide store

While completing his training Bevan purchased Bakers Delight North Adelaide and his area manager helped guide him through the first 12 months. “Our area manager comes in regularly to check on how we’re doing and to help solve any issues we might have. She really helps take the stress off my shoulders and allows me to focus on growing my business.” Now, with an established business and 20 staff, Bevan attributes his success to hard work, passion and always keeping in touch with other franchisees - whom he describes as a great resource for advice, information and a good catch up. As for the future, Bevan sees the business growing steadily. After an investment in new equipment, Bakers Delight North Adelaide can produce a higher quality product and improve production times so customers and staff have the best experience possible.

Bevan’s tips • Owning your own business is hard work, but if you are passionate and motivated, it will make it all worthwhile. • Look after your staff, be positive and happy because then they will feel the same way and it will transfer to your customers as well. • Keep in contact with other franchisees. They are our biggest resource and always give advice or help when we need it.

Cafe2U

Cafe2U – a mobile coffee franchise where all you need is your smile We’ll teach you the rest!

F

or many, investing in a franchise is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, often driven by a desire to be in control of one’s destiny; which is often accompanied by fear and the risk of being a new business owner for the first time. Cafe2U’s Acceleration Package is designed to take away those initial fears and the financial concerns that come with starting any new business. “No matter what your skill set is or where your career path has taken you, the Cafe2U Acceleration Package training program, equips the unfamiliar new business owner with all the necessary skills and training to fast track their success in their new business”, says Derek Black, managing director of Cafe2U. The first week of the Acceleration Package is formal training, the second is preparation week and weeks three and four are the business launch, with your personal franchisee coach by your side, to guide you every step of the way. The Acceleration Package is designed to ensure that all new franchisees are fully prepared to maintain a daily business run that turns over a minimum of $500 a day. “We are so confident in our system, our expert launch staff, our award winning coffee blend and our territory mapping methodology that we will guarantee the franchisee’s income while they find their feet. During the launch phase we will literally write a cheque at the end of each day’s trade if there is a gap between $500 and the daily takings” says Black.

FRANCHISEES For Mark Andrews, owner of Cafe2U Campbellfield, VIC, the proven system

and ongoing support offered by Cafe2U were the main attraction. “Cafe2U have a proven system and provided training and assisted in launching my new business. They were not just interested in selling another coffee van, but rather showed a commitment to grow each new franchise partners’ business, for the benefit of the whole Cafe2U system.” When asking Mark what he knows now and wished he knew before leaving his previous job to join Cafe2U, Mark confidently responded with, “If I had known two years earlier, what I know now, I wouldn’t have waited to get started. My concerns about the risk of starting my own business were way overstated when compared to how it has all gone.” Similarly, for Damian Tyler, owner of Cafe2U Bayswater North, VIC, he too found comfort in Cafe2U’s offerings. “We’ve been impressed by the support and professionalism of the Cafe2U team and the strength and commitment to the brand. We are looking forward to being in business for ourselves but NOT by ourselves, with the support of the Cafe2U team.” If you want to have some fun and

Take the plunge into franchising If you’re dreaming of owning your own business franchising has a lot to offer

B

usiness ownership can be a great way to achieve the working life that many people hanker after – greater day to day flexibility, a financial return on hard work, being the boss, creating a viable business. And franchising offers some particular benefits.

Leveraging the brand First up there is the benefit of trading under a well-known name: there is the advantage of customer awareness enhanced by national marketing campaigns. Although fast food franchises come to mind easily, as you’ll have seen in this publication the reach of the franchising method of business extends into all fields from mobile retail to B2B services, from accommodation to hairdressing and insurance. Some franchise systems rely on particular technical skills and knowledge and look to practitioners in these areas to take on a franchise. But the vast majority of franchise models expect their franchisees to be inexperienced in the new field of business and arrange their training and business support accordingly.

Support Franchising is all about tapping into the experience, skills and knowledge of others: the entrepreneur who established the business concept, the support team at head office, and fellow franchisees with their hands-on experience. One attractive benefit of a franchised model is that many of the challenges of building a business are eased with the back-up of experienced practitioners in

44

Are you ready to dive into franchising?

fields such as marketing, IT, finance, admin, even site selection and rental negotiations. The support you will receive from a good franchisor who has learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t work is invaluable and it means you don’t have to endure the full series of trials and errors that mark a fledgling independent business. For a start, franchisees aren’t thrown in at the deep end of business without training. This might be for a few days, weeks, or even months. So when you start up on the first day not only are you armed with an operations manual but you have a good idea about how to manage processes, deal with customers and talk about your product or service. A top quality franchisor will also

ensure franchisees receive ongoing support with their business, either formally with benchmarking performance and regular support team visits, or through mentoring from fellow franchisees.

Route to independence A franchisee invests in a business for a specific time period, often three or five years. In many cases the agreement with the company is renewed so the franchisee can continue trading if they so wish. Franchising can be the channel to independence, even to a mini empire as franchisees themselves replicate their success across more than one outlet or service location. So why not take the plunge and find out more about investing in a franchise?
