Meet Alfred.

He has been the heart and soul of Bernard’s Hairstyling and Spa since 1972! One of the world’s premier hair stylists since the 1970s, he was also an avid competitor of his onetime nemesis, Tom “Bernard” Spicer. Coast to coast and throughout Europe, in Hair Cutting and Styling competitions worldwide, whenever these two competed, they both ended standing on the winners’ platform! Their competitiveness became mutual respect which grew into a great friendship and helped build the career of a true champion. It all started in Paris at the World Supreme Cup Hair cutting Competition where he came in second to Tom Spicer. It was Tom who asked Alfred to join him at his salon in Mt Laurel , NJ. It was a natural fit, and before long the team was building the Bernard legacy of creativity, quality and value. Alfred’s history includes being a who’s who in competition and a true legend in Bernard’s history. Creative, technically skilled and continuously motivated, he is an inspiration to the entire staff and industry. Imagine how lucky our community and clients have been to have had two of the world’s finest in one salon. And for the Bernard’s staff and any stylists joining them, to have learned from two of the great teachers and creative minds in Hairdressing is a huge benefit. Alas, Thomas Bernard passed away, but Alfred, and many of Bernard’s early staff remain while others have gone on to successful careers elsewhere. Newer members of the current Bernard’s Hairstyling staff have taken Bernard’s postgraduate training program under Alfred’s supervision.

Here’s a short list of Alfred’s career: • Winner first, second and third place in NYC World Supreme Cup 1976 for Total Fashion Look… Hair, Color, Make up, Jewelry and look…using three models…an accomplishment never duplicated

• Artistic Director for the Pennsylvania Hair and Cosmetogy Association & Bernard’s Artistic Team • Runner Up World Cup & America’s Cup • Member Olympic Hairstyling Team Alfred is a lover of life; he feels lucky and lives happily in a career that remains his passion, and retirement is not in his thoughts—instead, the desire to delight clients with outstanding style and service, and to help the young Bernard’s stylists become great designers on their own. His message: “Make choices, not decisions.”

I had an opportunity to ask an interesting question to the “Godfather of Nuevo Latino Cuisine - Chef Douglas Rodriguez. Q. I know that at one time you worked with Chef Jose Garces in Philadelphia. Are you at all surprised with his incredible success in Philadelphia and beyond? A: Chef Garces worked for me at Alma de Cuba. He was the chef de cuisine, but I knew from the moment I hired him in New York that he was going to be who he is today. I felt it from the beginning; I always knew he was going to be a star.

Catelli Duo While there might be a shortage of outstanding independent restaurants in South Jersey, there are still great independent concepts, and Catelli Duo is the perfect example.

After a 17-year run with Catelli Ristorante, they wanted to make things even better. Invariably, a restaurant that is planning to be around for the long haul needs a great chef, and Chef Lou Imbesi is one of the area’s best. The addition of Chef Roberta Adamo makes it even more interesting, and a visit to their site will tell you everything you have to know. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so we have included some photos to help make our point.
