GM JIM MAYO

We are excited to resurrect Chip & Chatter. We plan to offer this newsletter monthly and plan to have it posted on the new website. The renovations continue to progress, and we are very excited for the big reveal, which will be more like a slow unveiling. But, it should be better than watching paint dry. Remember what Jerry Jeff Walker says, “life is mostly attitude and timing.” - Jimmy

¼ cup Honey ¼ cup Rice Vinegar 1 Cup Mayonnaise 1 tsp White Pepper 1 tsp Salt

INSTRUCTIONS: In a large bowl combine cabbage, red bell pepper, pineapple and green onions. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, rice vinegar, honey, pepper and salt until smooth. Add to cabbage mixture; toss to coat.

ON THE GREEN HEAD PRO JORDAN ROPP It is a great pleasure to be your Head Golf Professional at Corvallis Club. I believe in creating a team that provides phenomenal service that elevates the experience at the Corvallis Club. I will strive to bring this along with me and elevate the staff to those standards. My “office” is an open door. I want to hear your ideas, thoughts, and needs of your Golf Department. My decisions, and changes, coming in the future will all be to elevate the experience and provide that phenomenal service to you all. - Jordan

GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH PUTTING: DISTANCE CONTROL SIMPLIFIED Tempo is key! If you want to control the distance of the putt, change the backswing and follow through length. Keep the same tempo and it will be easier to control your distance with this simple setup.

HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB

Any Golf member can be a part of the Hole-In-One Club. Once signed up, you will be charged $5 per month with a 1-year commitment. The Hole-In-One pot begins July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021.

HOW IT WORKS Hole-In-One pot will build monthly from the $5 charges. The Hole-In-One pot will be paid out based on the number of Hole-In-One claims per each month. STIPULATIONS TO CLAIM There must be a witness for the Hole-In-One. A full 18-hole scorecard, with a qualified score on all of the 18 holes, must be: turned in, signed and attested to on the day of the Hole-In-One. Temporary Greens or modified holes do not count toward the Hole-In-One pot. Holes must be standard regulation setup. Your shot must be played from either the regulation Orange, White, or Black tees for the Hole-In-One to be valid.

CART TRAFFIC

Continual cart traffic over the same area stresses turf conditions. It's always best to stay on the cart path whenever possible. Don't forget to sign up for the Pre-Paid Cart Plan. If you are using your own cart, please send in your recreational vehicle insurance and trail fee.

GOLF ETIQUETTE

Now days, technology is everywhere. The course is a haven for you and fellow members. Silencing your phone will prevent interruptions or distractions and possibly help improve your game. If you have to make a call, move away from other players and keep your call as brief as possible. No one will even know you made it.

SAFETY FIRST 1) Practice Social Distancing (stay 6 feet apart) 2) Practice good personal health habits (wash your hands) 3) Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, and mouth) & cover your cough and sneezes 5) Avoid using the locker rooms and showers 6) Skip the 19th Hole! Always check the World Health Organization's website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

GOLF ATTIRE

We are now into peak season. We ask that all golfers wear proper golf attire. Please, no jeans, athletic shorts, tee shirts/noncollared shirts, and non-golf tank tops. Jeans are permitted only if accompanied with rain pants over the jeans to cover them up. Please contact the Pro Shop with further questions regarding proper golf attire.

COURSE IMPROVEMENTS SUPER JASON LEONARD These are exciting times to be here at Corvallis Club. It is awesome to see all the work being done in and around the clubhouse. We are also doing some cool things out on the golf course. The purchase of more equipment has recently approved to help improve the golf course conditions as well as have the appropriate amount of staff to do what we need to do. We are doing more than ever to make the golf course the best it can be. We have some old and new faces out on the course that are excited to be here. Please give them a big smile and wave to let them know they are appreciated. - Jason

Dan sturtevant

We are proud and excited to announce the retirement of Dan Sturtevant on May 29, 2020. Dan started working at The Corvallis Country Club in May of 1983. Over his 37 years here, Dan has worked his way up through the ranks to become the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. He is a jack of all trades when it comes to maintaining a golf course. Dan has gone above and beyond, time after time, to make sure things get done. Through heavy rain, snow, ice, wind, lots of mud, downed trees, tall rough, broken equipment, challenging employees, errant golf balls, flooding and just about any other challenge you can think of, Dan has been here to make sure the golf course survives and is ready for golfers. Though Dan isn’t a golfer, you might still find him out here occasionally mowing the rough as he is tinkering with the idea of coming back part time (let’s hope so). If you don’t find him here at the golf course, he most likely will be out wading in a quiet, peaceful river with his rod and reel in hand waiting for that perfect trout. Please congratulate Dan on a job well done. We thank him for all his hard work and dedication to Corvallis Club. We wish him the best of times during his retirement years. He has no doubt earned it!

HOW TO PROPERLY REPAIR A BALL MARK step 1 step 2

Start off with the Ball Mark Repair Tool. The first step in repairing ball marks is to take your ball mark repair tool and insert the prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Note: Do not insert the prongs into the depression itself, but at the rim of the depression. Push the edge of the ball mark toward the center, using your ball mark repair tool in a "gentle twisting motion," According to the Golf Course

step 3

Superintendents Association of America , this step is where golfers incorrectly

"repair" ball marks. Many golfers believe the way to "fix" a ball mark is to insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of the crater, and then to use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the ball mark back up even with the surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of the depression upward only tears the roots and kills the grass.

step 4

Once you've worked around the rim of the ball mark with your repair tool, pushing the grass toward the center, there's only one thing left to do: Gently tamp down the repaired ball mark with your putter or foot to smooth the putting surface. Then admire your work and pat yourself on the back for helping to take care of the golf course.

SMASH FACTOR Smash Factor is ball speed divided by club speed. Smash Factor relates to the amount of energy transferred from the club head to the golf ball. The higher the smash factor the better the energy transfer. A golfer would hope to achieve a smash factor near 1.50 on driver shots. That means for a 100 mph club speed the ball speed would be 150 mph. The higher the loft of the club, the lower the smash factor is expected to be. A PW should have a smash factor near 1.25.

ON THE COURT During these trying times, the Corvallis Club is doing our part to provide a safe and clean environment for all our members. Because tennis does not require any direct person-to-person contact, players can enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that tennis offers, as long as social distancing is practiced by keeping six feet apart. Please ensure you are following recommended guidelines on the next page.

TENNIS TIP OF THE MONTH STRETCH TO IMPROVE TENNIS MOBILITY AND FOOTWORK

Unlike natural ability, mobility is something you can actually improve with practice. Increase your flexibility and court coverage with simple stretches in the morning and before bed.

RULES & SAFETY GUIDELINES HOW TO SAFELY PLAY TENNIS before you play

Arrange to play only with family members or others who live in your household, or individuals who are low risk. Do not play if any of you: Exhibit any symptoms of the COVID-19: mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough and difficulty breathing, or other symptoms identified by the CDC. Have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days. Are a vulnerable individual and your state and region is in Phase One or Phase Two . A vulnerable individual is an elderly individual and/or an individual with serious underlying health conditions, including high blood pressure, chronic lung disease, diabetes, obesity, asthma and those whose immune system is compromised such as by chemotherapy for cancer and other conditions requiring such therapy. (For states

and regions in Phase Three, a vulnerable individual can resume public interactions, including playing tennis, but should practice physical distancing).

preparing to play

Protect against infections: Wash your hands with a disinfectant soap and water (for 20 seconds or longer) or use a hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available, before going to the court. Clean and wipe down your equipment, including racquets and water bottles. Do not share racquets or any other equipment such as wristbands, grips, hats, and towels. Bring a full water bottle to avoid touching a tap or water fountain handle. Use new balls and a new grip, if possible. Consider taking extra precautions such as wearing gloves. If you need to sneeze or cough, do so into a tissue or upper sleeve. Arrive as close as possible to when you need to be there. Avoid touching court gates, fences, benches, etc. if you can.

while playing

Try to stay at least six feet apart from other players. Do not make physical contact with them (such as shaking hands or a high five). You should consider not playing doubles, which could lead to incidental contact and unwanted proximity. If you do play doubles, avoid all incidental contact, NO Bryan Brothers Chest Bumps and NO whispering to each other from a close distance to strategize. Avoid touching your face after handling a ball, racquet, or other equipment. Wash your hands promptly if you have touched your eyes, nose, or mouth. Avoid sharing food, drinks, or towels. Use your racquet/foot to pick up balls and hit them to your opponent. Avoid using your hands to pick up the balls. Stay on your side of court. Avoid changing ends of the court. Remain apart from other players when taking a break. If a ball from another court comes to you, send it back with a kick or with your racquet.

after play

Leave the court as soon as reasonably possible. Wash your hands thoroughly or use a hand sanitizer after coming off the court. Do not use the locker room or changing area. Shower at home.

COURT HOURS MONDAY-SUNDAY 8AM-8PM

Members must call the Pro Shop to reserve the courts and obtain the combination to the lock. Reservations are a first come, first serve basis. Reservations are limited to ninety (90) minutes. All guests of members must register at the Pro Shop, and provide: an email address and phone number.

STAYING COOL AQUATICS JUDY STORIE Hello swimmers. As we are waiting for additional guidelines from the Governor and Benton County, we have begun to prepare the pool for summer, We expect that all pools, public or private, will have new protocols to put in place prior to opening. It will look different from past summers as there may be limits on the number of people in the enclosure and in the pool in order to maintain social distancing. We look forward to seeing everyone this summer and appreciate your support and understanding as we navigate through many changes.

SWIM TIP OF THE MONTH Water’s buoyancy make swimming the ideal exercise for physical therapy and rehabilitation or for anyone seeking a low-impact exercise.

Hooray! For Summer! "HAVE FUN, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT." - Ryan Lochte
