JIM MAYO GENERAL MANAGER Greetings: It has been an interesting winter so far, and we expect spring to bring great things for The Corvallis Club. There are several items in the works. The first, and the most obvious, is construction on the new pro shop. We are hoping to be open by April 1st, and have the Fitness Center open by May 1st, but we never know how construction and the pandemic will play out, so follow along. With the improved facilities and Fitness Center addition, we anticipate many new members joining this spring. It is important to help new members get oriented. To achieve that, we are looking for existing members to become ambassadors for new members. This is still in the planning stage, but if you are interested, please let me know. This is your Club and you can influence the membership so that it remains the type of environment you enjoy. Sponsoring new members and volunteering as an ambassador are two ways you can shape the experience. Cheers! Jimmy

HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

We are getting closer to Spring Weather! Before we can start officially posting our scores on March 1st, now is a good time to take a look at your setup and needs for your game. CLUBS: If you have been waiting to get that new wedge, new putter, new driver, or even new set of clubs, now is the time to start diving a little deeper. All of the main companies that we represent here at the Club are sending us their new products in the next couple months. There have been a lot of “development dollars” spent on these clubs to make them more forgiving, faster off the face, and fitted properly for golfers based off of their skill. The main companies that we work with are: Taylormade, Cobra, Titleist and Callaway. We have 3 people on staff here at the club, representing Taylormade (Jordan), Cobra (Spence), Titleist (Brandon). That can be a rare feat and provides a unique opportunity for members to get the proper detailed information on certain clubs and balls from the companies. Come pick our brains for information on what you may be looking for this year! Remember that All Members at Corvallis Club get 10% off in stock clubs, and get special pricing on any Special Order clubs! GRIPS: “Golf Pride recommends changing your grips once a year. If you play frequently you may consider re-gripping more than once a year. Oils on your hands, sweat, dirt and other elements will break down the rubber.” -We carry a limited stock of all types of grips to fit what you are looking for. If we don’t have it, we can order it! Make sure you have the proper grips that can withstand the wet weather, but also provide good support during the upcoming summer time months. If you have already recently re-gripped your clubs, consider washing them after several rounds. Just take warm water, some degreaser dish soap, wipe the grips clean and use a dry towel to wipe them dry. You should see a noticeable change in tackiness. SHOES AND SPIKES: You want to make sure you will have minimal “slippage” when hitting your shots on a wet course. Make sure your spikes are not wearing down, and check if any need to be replaced. We have a good stock of spikes available at $1.00 per spike. Most shoes have 6-7 spikes each. Check if the waterproof lining on your shoes is holding. Most shoes nowadays have at least a 1 year waterproof warranty. You can get shoes from the various companies that offer even a 2 year waterproof warranty. The Golf Shop can order basically anything that is provided by Nike, Footjoy, Adidas, Puma, and New Balance. If there is a style you are looking at ordering, reach out to the Golf Shop and get your Member Discount! GOLF BALLS During the colder months, it may be more beneficial to use a softer compression ball. It’s good to find a ball that fits your style of play. Do you want less spin off the tee, but still enough spin around the greens? Or are you looking for a ball that will give you the most spin and feel to stop sooner on closer shots? Come talk to us about the benefits of each type of ball we have in stock from Taylormade, Bridgestone, Titleist, and Callaway. Remember that any stock golf balls you get 20% off as a Member.

SETTING GOLF GOALS

When we get closer to our “season” it is important to write down a list of goals you want to accomplish with your Golf Game. This can be anything from improving one aspect to as simple as shooting lower scores on average or getting your handicap lower. Here are some main stats that are good to track and improve upon:

GIR (Greens in Regulation)

This is the amount of times you hit the Green in Regulation during your round. You have 18 chances to get a GIR during your round. Par 3 = 1 shot Par 4 = 2 shots Par 5 = 3 shots

FIR (Fairways in Regulation)

This is the amount of times you hit the Fairway off the tee. You typically have 14 chances to get a FIR. Any hole, other than a Par 3 qualifies for this stat.

TOTAL PUTTS We want to strive and only 2 putt average on every hole. This means 36 total putts during your round is our standard goal. If the course is Par 72, that is half your strokes! This means we should be practicing putter over half our time when practicing! With each of these stats, the better you can do, the lower your scores will be. GIR is probably one of your most important stats to have high numbers on. The more greens you hit, averaging 2 putts, the more Pars and lower scores you will have.

LESSONS If you need a quick refresher on different aspects of your game (Driver, Irons, Pitching, Chipping, Putting), come see us for a quick 30 minute lesson so we can get you on the right track to lower scores and have more enjoyable rounds!

Winter Update

It officially feels like an Oregon winter now that we have been getting hammered with rain. The bulk of the winter has been decent in terms of rain accumulation, and thus we have been attacking our project list that is typically difficult in wet conditions.

Trees

You may notice a few dead trees, that have been lingering for years, are finally down and gone. Tree work is typically expensive and time consuming. We have an awesome arborist that is hanging with us for a good portion of the winter, and addressing some much-needed tree work. We are also trimming up low tree branches where needed. We have excessive amounts of firewood. Feel free to come down and get a load from the maintenance yard. The gate on Golf View Drive is open between 6AM and 2PM.

Drain Lines

You may notice some more drain lines added to various locations around the course. We have a great machine for trenching and a great operator that attacks these wet spots with aggressively. We are excited to now have the capability to efficiently and cost effectively address wet spots.

Tree Boxes

We re-leveled a few crowned tee boxes last fall with a demo machine. We are purchasing the equipment needed to continue leveling more tee boxes. We hope to get this machine in the next month or two. We have another 15 – 20 tee boxes that are on our list to re-level.

Future

We have a few other exciting projects and improvements we will be adding to the course this coming year that we are excited for you to see and enjoy.

Next time you are on Hole 6, check out the new addition to our landscaping!
