JIM MAYO GENERAL MANAGER GREETINGS! There is a lot of news to share, so I will get right to it. Chip & Chatter will be changing to a quarterly publication rather than monthly. We are sensitive to the amount of information that is disseminated through the internet and would like you to read ours. To that end, We have reduced the email blast to once per week, and the newsletter to quarterly. If we are going to your spam folder because of too much information, please consider switching us back to your inbox – we appreciate it. We will be updating membership categories and the dues structure on January 1st, 2021. There will be information included in your statements this month. Please review the information and ask questions, so that we can make sure you are comfortable with your January statements. Please see the last page with respect to our new members, feel free to introduce yourselves and make them feel comfortable. JIM MAYO

WINTER RULES NOW IN AFFECT! A ball lying in the General Area (excluding bunkers and other penalty areas) may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, they must place it on a spot: · Within 6 inches from its original spot (if not known, must be estimated) · Not nearer the hole, and · In the same area of the course as that spot
COLD WEATHER AND GOLF
When we get into the colder weather, our swing and distance gets changed up a bit. With the combination of denser air, bulkier clothing, and wetter conditions, we need to adjust how we approach our game! A couple of tips for our “winter swing.” 1. Your swing speed will tend to be slower. This can be due to several factors: Properly warming up the body and swing before playing, and the limit of flexibility with bulkier clothing Slowing clubhead speed means less distance Make sure to club up on some of your shots to compensate Practice different shots on the range with clubbing up and having a Three-Quarter swing. 2. The Golf Ball will travel shorter in the air Along with a slower clubhead speed, the air is denser in the cold weather which will limit its flight Try using a lower compression golf ball to help combat 3. The Wet Golf Ball Water on the ball reduces friction when impacting the club face. This will cause the ball to slide up the face slightly, producing a higher launch and less spin. Less spin means more roll out on the greens.
WINTER GOLF TIP
With the winter weather just around the corner, we will start to see some thicker and wet rough. Here are some quick tips and thoughts when trying to hit out of it: We want to limit the amount of grass that gets in between the clubface and the ball at impact. If there is grass that gets in there, it creates what is called a “flyer lie.” The ball will come out with less spin and roll out longer when it lands. Place the ball a little further back in your stance and take a steeper angle of attack. Safe Play – Take a high lofted club, choke down on the grip, place the ball a little further back in your stance and get the ball in the fairway!

COURSE IMPROVEMENTS Aerification:
JASON LEONARD
GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
With the summer months of warm weather just about gone, we are transitioning into some fall/winter practices for the golf course. The big project that we do spring and fall every year is aerification. This is the process of poking holes and adding sand to our greens, tees, approaches and sometimes fairways. Usually we pull up a core and it leaves a hole in the ground. What this process does is removes thatch (living and dead organic matter) and clay soil. We then replace that core with a specific type of sand specified for draining.
Healthy Greens:
This basic process helps the course and specifically the greens in many ways. It creates a channel for water to drain, it removes thatch, it relieves compaction, it allows the greens to breath, it removes any layering that limits water and grass to grow, it helps firm up the greens and overall it helps with the general health of the greens. This practice, along with our summer verticutting and sanding program are very beneficial to the health of our turf, especially for our greens. If either of these two practices are abandoned for a few years or longer, the health will decline, and the playability will be poor.
Fall Leaves:
We have an interesting love/hate relationship with our trees. They sure are beautiful to look at year-round. The trees make our golf course very interesting and challenging to play. But come fall, they start making a mess, every‌single‌day. Good thing we have some good equipment to manage the leaves. Every day from about mid-September to mid-December, we work on blowing the leaves off the short grass and then either pick up the leaves or mulch them into the rough areas. Our goal each day is to make the course playable. Some days the winds will pick up and blow more leaves down early in the day. Due to other jobs and projects we are working on, we cannot drive around the course all day cleaning up leaves. We appreciate your patience during leaf season, but know that cleaning up the leaves is a priority.
Thankful Team:
As many of you know, I can go on and on about our wonderful golf course. I am sure I have bored many of you, so I will wrap it up. Our department thanks our owners and the members for their support in all that we do to make the course the best it can be. Our team works tirelessly every day, starting often well before the sun comes up. I am proud of every team member and what is already a great team, I hope to add to it in the near future.
