The Estonian eagles

Elabuga 2013

Study area – 1000 km2

Main goals of the studies • How many different species breeding in Remda peninsula? • What are the population numbers of breeding species? • Distribution of different species territories. • Species productivity.

Remdovskiy Zakaznik (74 700 hectare)

Known nests before 2014

• White-tailed Eagl – 5 nest sites • Osprey – 8 nest sites

Expeditions

• 5 years winter tracks – 1800 km • Through the years 22 participants (15 Estonians, 7 Russians) • One expedition last 3-5 days. Per year were 3-5 expeditions. All together were 20 expeditions

Other activities

Golden Eagle nest sites distribution • We found 5 new nest sites within 3 territories

White-tailed eagle nest sites distribution

• We found 32 new nest sites • Wt Eagles nest sites doesn’t situating regularly - G=0.50 (with regular distribution G>0.65)

Ospreys nest sites distribution • We found 57 new nest sites • Osprey nest sites doesn’t situating regularly - G=0.30 (with regular distribution G>0.65)

All nest sites together

• Altogether we fou 94 new nest sites • Remda „eagle community „ nest sites doesn’t situating regularly G=0.40

Population numbers • Golden Eagle : 3-4 pairs • White-tailed Eagle: 35-40 pairs • Osprey: 50-60 pairs

Density of territories (N:50 Osprey and 30 Wt Eagle) Study area 1000 km2 Average number of pairs per 100 km2: a) Wt Eagle – 3,0 b) Osprey – 5,0

5x5 km grid (49 squares) Average number of pairs per 100km2: a) Wt Eagle – 2,4 (average per square 0,6) b) Osprey – 4,0 (average per square 1,0)

Distribution of territories inside 5x5 km grid (49 squares)

Distribution of WT Eagle and Osprey territories difference significantly – (Fisher's Exact test) P = 0.0003

Distances of nearest neighbours (Osprey and Wt Eagle)

• No significant • Ospreys prefer to keep difference from Wt close to each other Eagle nests • t = -3.7274, df = 30.743, • t = 1.4702, df = 69.021, p<0.001 p = 0.1461

Does neighbours and Big Lake matter? Analyse method: Generalized Linear Mixed Model (year and breeding territory as random factors); n/s - not significant
