International Conference on the Conservation of the Eastern Imperial Eagle Eagles of Palearctic: Study and Conservation Conference, Katun village, Altai Kray, Russia, 9 September 2018
Introduction • Satellite-tagging became rapidly developing and expanding tool in raptor research & conservation • Decreasing tag sizes cause less and less effect on birds, but anyhow cause significant disturbance • Decreasing tag costs cause more and more possibility for tagging, but the given question should determine the minimally needed sample size – especially for threatened species • Several different projects targeting the same species worth to be harmonized – especially for threatened species • Pannonian example: we defined a theoretical 5% threshold, as the maximum ratio of juveniles, which should be tagged for any purpose
Objective • MAKE THE 1ST STEP in an international cooperation among eastern imperial eagle (EIE) tracking projects worlwide (in the frame of the non-official International EIE Working Group) • VISUALIZE ON ONE SIMPLE MAP the dispersal behaviour of EIEs in the western (resident?) populations • NOT to analyse the data
Methods
• Asking colleagues to contribute • Agreement on data usage (preliminary only for this particular presentation) • Harmonization of the different data sources and visualization in QGIS (2008-2017)
World distribution of Eastern Imperial Eagles „Resident” populations: • adults thought to be completely resident • immatures thought to be mostly resident

Summary • Tagging have been executed in 9 countries holding „resident” populations • only Serbia, Azerbaijan and Crimea is missing • All together 171 individuals were satellite-tracked • Tags provided much more than 1.5 million locations on the individuals’ dispersal movements

And the Final Map... Pannonia Macedonia Thrace Anatolia Caucasus
Discussion • 1st, but important step • Continue the cooperation with projects targeting the Eastern migratory populations, to provide a worlwide map of the species’ main dispersal habits • Continue the cooperation in future scientific publication and project planning
And finally something else, but interesting from Anatolia:
Aquila heliaca Aquila nipalensis Aquila heliaca x nipalensis
Thank you for the attention!
