LETTER FROM THE CCS LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, Kindness begets kindness. Never has this been more evident than during this past year. Despite great challenges, we saw the year transformed into one of Faith, Leadership, Generosity, and Resilience – lived out each day through the vocation and goodness of so many. From day one of this pandemic, the Campaign for Catholic Schools (CCS), as co-sponsor of our five urban school campuses, prioritized how we and our Academies can work as one team, fully committed to taking good care of one another. As you will see in this report, our entire Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy and Trinity Catholic Academy staffs made sure that no child was left behind. Most remarkably, we maintained a 95% student attendance rate during remote learning in the spring – truly an exceptional achievement! Building on the learnings from the early days of the pandemic, our urban Academies successfully opened this fall to in-person instruction, with remote-learning options also provided to families. Our school campuses have been outfitted with all required safety and health protocols as well as the latest technologies to ensure a safe and interactive classroom experience. We are most proud of our faculty and leadership for the generous love and support they continue to share with our urban students and families. As a result, our students and families have truly come to know just how much they are “Known, Loved and Called to Excellence” each and every day. Our evolution as co-sponsor proved to be both timely and essential. Together with our Academy boards and leadership, we demonstrated the strength of our regional model with its focus on developing involved lay boards and investing in programs that leverage academic best practices, develop future school leaders, and enhance teacher support and retention. As many urban Catholic schools across the nation close, our Academies, and those that we have worked to form, continue to thrive as we work to ensure long-term sustainability. Because of you, CCS continues to transform young lives, with 100% of our students going to a quality secondary school, 98% graduating high school, and 92% attending a four-year college – a testament to our shared leadership, generosity and commitment to building the next generation of leaders. Kindness truly does beget kindness. Thank you for helping us take good care of one another. Sincerely,

Jack Connors, Jr., Chairman

Never has our strategic change to co-sponsorship been more important, as it enables a deeper collaboration with our local Academy boards and leadership. Actively involved with the strategic planning, ongoing school improvements and decision-making, together we bring a unified focus to areas of leadership, governance, academic and financial oversight. Working as one, we have successfully positioned our Academies for success and sustainability through good times and challenging times.

A YEAR OF LEADERSHIP

It’s critical to recognize the school leaders who were steadfast in their mission during a most difficult year.

At our two-campus Trinity Catholic Academy, our 300 students have truly blossomed under the care of Head of School Dr. Jennifer Roy. With clear vision, strong leadership and academic focus, Jen and her principal have been key for TCA students and families to live out their “Known, Loved and Called to Excellence” motto each day. Response to the global pandemic has been an Academy-wide operation, with leaders like Brandley and Roy, their boards and teams, all working in concert with the Campaign for Catholic Schools. Together, with our leadership teams, dedicated teachers, counselors and local government officials, we continue to change lives. Every day.

While the pandemic forces led the public schools in Boston to fall back to remote learning, Kate opened wide the doors of our Academy for students to learn in the classroom. Relying on the steadfast support of CCS and our intrepid teachers, she led our team onto the field to know, love and call our students to excellence in the most personal way. Kate selflessly helps the rest of us realize that we can – and should – do more to help. We are blessed to have her insight, energy, and leadership. – Kevin Mohan, SJPIICA Board Chair

A YEAR OF RESILIENCE COVID-19 presented particular challenges for underserved urban communities like Dorchester and Brockton.

During COVID-19, our CCS co-sponsored Academies provided support to students and families that included: • 400+ Chromebooks to students • 1,000+ individual family check-ins by leadership, nursing, and guidance • Ongoing parent dialogue with professional referral services

We cannot say enough about the dedication, love and support provided by our faculty, guidance and nursing staff; they truly know each and every child. Committed to our urban families, they live out their vocation every day not only through their academic expertise but especially this year – through the eyes of faith, service, care and support of the whole child, allowing God’s plan for our students to flourish.

A YEAR OF STRENGTH

During a difficult year, we kept our promise of every student being “known, loved and called to excellence.”

Our CCS and co-sponsored Academy goal was to make sure all students and families stayed fully connected to the wide array of Academy services – guidance, nursing, academic and faculty support – during this pandemic. Every student was accounted for in each class and absences were immediately followed up on by a staff member to make sure all was okay at home. Financial relief provided to families with dire circumstances ensured that no child was left behind and all students remained part of our student body.

Innovative Teacher Retention Programs: • 70% of teachers at TCA and 45% at SJPII have Master’s degrees. • Our STARS and Yawkey Teacher Excellence Award programs recognize and reward our top-performing teachers, resulting in a 33% improvement in retention for participating teachers. • Our School Leader development programs have resulted in three new vice-principal roles at our Academies, with others trained and now serving as school principals in other Catholic schools. • We are one of 4% of US employers to offer our groundbreaking College Loan Reduction program to help reduce teacher loans.

A YEAR OF SUCCESS

Together, CCS and our Academies are implementing systemic improvements for long-term success.

Enhanced Academic & Student Support Programs including: • New Bridges to Math and Illustrative Math curriculums • New Spanish & public-speaking programs • High school readiness programs • STEM curriculum, science clubs and activities • Before/after-school programs to meet family needs from 6:30am to 6:00pm • Health & wellness programs for students and families • New campus ministry, student-life, and recreation programs to build community

Leveraging Efficiencies & Best Practices in: • Effective board management focused on quality and long-term sustainability • Shared technology and coordinated development support/resources • Curriculum mapped from Pre-K to Grade 8 • Consistent teacher evaluations with regular feedback and ongoing commitment to professional development and growth • Strategic communications, including focused branding, marketing, and messaging

Our son is now a freshman at Xaverian Brothers after nine years at SJPII. His principal, wonderful teachers, class participation, projects, and leadership opportunities all helped him to achieve his very best and shaped the person he is today. – Retha & Antwine B.

Building on the knowledge gained during the spring and summer months, we implemented all required health, safety, signage, and spacing protocols throughout our five campuses and outfitted each classroom with the latest technologies to ensure an interactive classroom experience. This enabled our Academies to open safely this September, offering both in-person and remote instruction options for our school families. Our school leaders, teachers, and staff truly know, love, and support our families in every way.

A YEAR OF OPTIMISM

CCS looks ahead to a very promising future as we implement bold new initiatives at our two Academies.

We look forward with hope to a successful vaccine rollout and a return to a more normal environment as we plan expanded services, programs, and outreach for our urban families and Academies. New initiatives underway include: • New Toddler divisions (age 2.0-2.8) to expand our current early education options • Creation of new School Family Liaison positions, with assistance from Boston College City Connects • Re-opening of Academy summer programs for our students and families • Enhancements to teacher reward and retention programs • Leveraging of shared services, math, ELA, health/wellness, and curriculum best practices across our five campuses.
