Wellness Telethon raises over $175,000 Together We Can has announced that their annual fundraising gala, the Way Cool Wellness Telethon held in November, has raised more than $175,000 with the help of community. Funds will go toward addiction recovery services, continuing education and free family support and education groups.

Founded in 1993, Together We Can Addiction Recovery & Education Society has become a leading treatment centre for men.

Located in Renfrew-Collingwood, TWC’s mission is to educate and support men and families who struggle with the challenges of substance misuse and who desire a new life in recovery.

TWC provides over 300 men with abstinence-based recovery programs and supportive housing opportunities in a therapeutic residential setting. Their addiction recovery programs, transitional housing and aftercare initiatives provide residents with an integrated approach to rehabilitation.

Resolutions for success Tips for New Year’s

Chances are at some time in your life, you’ve made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself, get healthy and start on a path of wellness and sobriety, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are 10 tips to help you get started.

1. Be realistic The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favourite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.

2. Plan ahead Don’t make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mindset that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before December 31st arrives.

3. Outline your plan Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practising positive thinking and selftalk or reminding yourself how your “bad behaviour” will affect your goal.

4. Make a “pros” and “cons” list It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time and ask others to contribute to it.

Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve.

5. Talk about it Don’t keep your resolution a secret.

Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and you motivate each other.

6. Reward yourself This doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your

resolution is to eat a better diet.

Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend.

7. Track your progress Keep track of each small success.

Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five. Don’t think about quitting drinking for the rest of your life, think about just going to bed each day sober and, before you know it, you’ve reached the first 30 days, then the next 30, and so on!

8. Don’t beat yourself up Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day and take one day at a time.

9. Stick to it Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient!

10. Keep trying If you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution by mid-February, don’t despair. Start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

Renfrew-Collingwood charity delivers Christmas hampers for 700 local families CityReach is a Canadian charity, with a location at 2650 Slocan Street, that provides 1,000 food hampers every week to local seniors and families. This past Christmas, CityReach reached out once again to help make sure the holidays are special for vulnerable families and children.

Boxes of Love has been an annual initiative through CityReach, Broadway Church and several other local partners for more than 20 years. This year, despite the continued COVID pressures, this tradition continued in a safe and meaningful way.

Thanks to hundreds of generous donors and volunteers, CityReach supported 700 local families and close to 2,000 children on December 18. More than 200 volunteer drivers signed on

to help bring the Boxes of Love to the doorsteps of the families in need.

City Councillor Michael Wiebe, MP Don Davies, MP Hedy Fry, MP Taleeb Noormohamed and MLA Niki Sharma also took part this day.

Mutual-Aid Community Supported Agriculture Pilot (September to October 2021) “Getting farm fresh produce that was delicious, fresh, and long lasting was a treat!”

“I loved getting out ... this was number one for me. It’s something that I hadn’t done for a very long time. The team involved with unloading and packing up the vegetables were very kind. The setting up was an incredible amount of work.”

“Your program made my life not only special, but very tasty. Each Friday I was able to pick up the special paper bag.”

We were over the moon to hear these beautiful messages from our Mutual-Aid Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Pilot program participants! Though the pilot is over for now, it was such an incredible experience, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

A huge thank you to all the participants and volunteers who came out each week!

It was so lovely seeing new and familiar faces and hearing everyone’s stories and feedback about how they used these vegetables in their daily lives.

The Food Hub’s Mutual Aid CSA Pilot Program ran from September to October 2021 and served more than 30 residents each week with fresh, organic local produce from the Tsawwassen First Nation Farm School. Because the program ran on a mutual aid model, participants could pay it forward and subsidize the cost of neighbours’ boxes, which helped many of our participants get the same high-quali-

CSA boxes create direct relationships between farmers and community members by paying for produce up front in a subscription-like model.

This ensures that all proceeds go directly to the farmers, thus creating a strong connection between our community members and food growers. As staff, we had a blast driving to the farm every week to pick up the food, which was given out to participants that same day!

COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shots

In December, we announced the rollout of booster shots for everyone in B.C. aged 18 and older. That work is underway, focusing first on those most at risk based on our data showing outbreaks in long-term care and breakthrough hospitalization being more common in people over 70. Beginning this month invitations will be sent out for more folks to get their booster shot with invitations based on risk and date of their second dose. In the meantime, I ask for your continued patience and to follow all the Provincial Health Orders.

Please practice safe social distancing, staying home if you are sick, washing your hands regularly, and wearing a mask in an indoor public setting, unless you are exempt.

Special thanks to @marathth for photos of food they made using produce from the CSA. Renfrew-Collingwood Food Hub Community Fridge (Beginning January 2022) It’s almost here! We poured the concrete pad for the fridge on a beautiful November day (under the guidance of several watchful preschoolers), and we are now constructing a wooden shed to protect the fridge from the elements. We hope to have the fridge installed, operational and stocked in early January. That being said, we are on the lookout for volunteers to check in on the fridge every week or so to ensure that everything is up to par!

The Seniors Connection

Avoid slips and falls this winter Everyone is at risk for falls, especially during winter weather when sidewalks can be icy. Vancouver Coastal Health has a number of resources, including a brochure and a home activity program to help you understand and avoid falls.

For seniors and those with elderly family members, note that many falls are preventable. There are proactive steps you can take to reduce your risk of experiencing a fall:

These include improving your mobility and balance, increasing your physical activity and muscle strength and following the Canadian guidelines for calcium and vitamin D consumption.

Keep your body active • Do strength, balance and flexibility exercises, such as lifting light weights, stair climbing, yoga and tai chi.

• Do exercises that promote endurance, such as walking and dancing.

• Organize regular vision check-ups and correct vision problems, review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist, and reduce trip and slip hazards in your home or outdoors.

The British Columbia Falls & Injury Prevention Coalition offers information and resources to help prevent falls through its Finding Balance website (findingbalancebc.ca/fall-resourcesfor-seniors/). You’ll also find a link there to assess

your risk of falling and a Fall Prevention Myths video in English, Farsi, Cantonese and Punjabi.

Safe winter walking Consider the following safety tips from the Canada Safety Council for safe winter walking (canadasafetycouncil.org/safety-tipsfor-winter-walking): • Plan ahead so you have enough time to get where you’re going.

• Walk on cleared walkways if there is ice and snow on the ground.

• Use boots or shoes that fit well and have a thick, nonslip tread sole.

• Use a cane, ski poles or walking sticks to help with balance. If using a cane, attach a retractable ice pick to the end.

City of Vancouver Snow Angel program When there is snow and ice, getting around can be difficult, especially for seniors and people with limited mobility.

When it snows the Snow Angel program helps match-up people throughout Vancouver who have limited mobility with neighbours willing to lend a hand to remove snow and ice outside their homes.

To volunteer as a Snow Angel, visit vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/snow-angel.aspx If you are a senior or have limited mobility and need help clearing snow from your sidewalk, first talk to your neighbours, friends, family and community and church groups for assistance.

If you still need a hand, call 3-1-1 to request a Snow Angel when it is snowing and sticking at least one centimetre (half inch) on the sidewalk.

Get involved: Join a planning group for local

2SLGBTQA+ initiatives

by Emily Rees Local residents and organizations are invited to collaborate in the creation of a new committee based in the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood representing 2SLGBTQA+ communities.

In 2019 and again in 2021, an informal group including Collingwood Neighbourhood House staff, neighbourhood volunteers and partner organizations worked together to organize successful Renfrew Collingwood Pride events. Many thanks to Sterling James who initiated the formation of this group.

There has been interest from community members to have a formal committee to support organizing in the neighbourhood. That is why we are looking to start a new committee!

To start, we would like to come together as an interim planning group to create the terms of reference for the committee, including the community responsibilities,

committee name and process for new members to join. Once this work has been finalized, we hope that the official committee will be formed by April 2022.

Representatives from community organizations, residents and individuals connected to Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood, with priority given to BIPOC 2SLGBTQA+ individuals, are invited to join three planning meetings starting in January 2022 to work together to create the committee structure.

2SLGBTQA+ community members and organization representatives who are connected to the RenfrewCollingwood neighbourhood are invited to collaborate in creating a 2SLGBTQA+ Committee in Renfrew-Collingwood. We are holding 3 meetings in January - March to create the committee.

Eating out in RC Zoom fatigue? Favourite lunch breaks from the home office

by Julie Cheng It’s been almost two years since I started working from home due to COVID safety measures. I miss the cycle commute to my downtown office, a good chat with my coworkers and all the usual lunchhour eateries.

Now Zoom fatigue and work isolation is getting to me. For my mental health, I try to get some sun and exercise with a walk around the Renfrew Ravine. I also go out for a lunch treat once in a while.

These are my favourite restaurants within walking distance. In addition to delicious food, they have kind and friendly staff.

The name of this Malaysian restaurant has changed (they are no longer part of the Penang Delight franchise), but the wonderful flavours of my favourites remain the same – chicken curry laksa, mee goreng and sambal green beans. Check out their lunch special.

Recreation Programs: Winter 2022

Collingwood Neighbourhood House offers a range of recreation programs and activities for all ages. Activities include music, dance and the arts, as well as other physical and social activities. We strive to provide a good balance of activities for people of all ability levels and interests in our neighbourhood. Most of our recreation programs take place at our main site at 5288 Joyce Street; some, however, are located at satellite facilities in the community. Integration, fairness, cooperation and mutual respect are some of the values central to our recreation programs, while having fun!

Registration Please read the following program descriptions which include start dates, times, cost and registration information. Participants in the many drop-in recreation programs at CNH pay the drop-in fee at the front desk. For some programs participants must register before the program begins; in those cases it’s a good idea to sign up early as many popular programs fill quickly. Most pre-registered programs run for 12 weeks, three times each year (fall, winter, and spring) or as special summer programs. Recreation participants are required to purchase a very modestly priced annual CNH membership to participate in programs.

Preschool & Children Recreation Programs at CNH Children's Gymnastics (Ages 4 and over) Gym Sense Gymnastics provides an excellent gymnastics program. The safe and supportive atmosphere helps children learn the skills needed to enjoy gymnastics. Classes work on a Can Gym badge system with children progressing at their own pace. $68/8 Sessions (Pre-registration is required).

Gymnastics Spring Camp (Ages 7-12) This camp run by Gym Sense Gymnastics Education will create an atmosphere of fun and excitement that encourages participants to safely learn new gymnastics skills and techniques. This program will educate, challenge and entertain young children.

Monday – Friday, March 14 – 18 and March 21 – 25 9:00 am – 4:00 pm $150/week or $75/week for half day participation Creative Dance (5-13) Creative Dance is a program for children and youth with various disabilities. This class will provide a fun and safe environment to explore different movements, games and dance routines. Participants that require substantial behavioural or physical support, may be asked to be accompanied by a guardian or support worker.

Tuesdays, January 18 – March 8 4:30 – 5:30 pm $60/8 Sessions Baton Twirling (Ages 7-12) Baton class is a combination of dance, gymnastics, and twirling a baton. With baton twirling you work on hand eye coordination all while having fun.

Saturdays, January 22 – Mar 12 12:00 – 12:45 pm $38/8 Session and $40 for the cost of the baton Rhythmic Gymnastics (Ages 4 – 12) Annex Location Enjoy the unique combination of dance, gymnastics, music, and selfexpression through the use of ribbons, balls, hoops, and ropes with choreographed routines.

Mondays, January 10 – March 7 4:00 – 5:00 pm (Ages 4-6) 5:00 – 6:00 pm (Ages 7-12) $72/8 Sessions Mixed Media (Ages 6-11) Annex Location Fun and messy class of creation, learning and making new friends. Acrylic painting, watercolor, painting, ink, printmaking and more art techniques will be involved. The main project will be step by step, 3D mixed media creation. Wushu (Ages 6-17) Wushu is a modern combination of Chinese martial arts on the northern and southern Chinese form of Kung Fu. This class is designed to work on conditioning, flexibility, and basic techniques Sundays, January 16 – March 6 5:00 – 5:45 pm (Ages 6-11) 6:00 – 7:00 pm (Ages 12-17) $40/8 Sessions Arts & Craft (Ages 6-9) Children will learn a variety of visual art media, methods and contents in a freeflowing, fun environment where children can discover, experience and share the joy of the creative process. Techniques will include painting, collage, casting, relief and using recycled materials to create forms.

Fridays, January 7 – Ongoing 10:00 – 11:45 am $30/11 Sessions Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) Music Class (Ages 0-6) The years from birth to age 6 are a crucial time in a child’s development, establishing brain circuitry that will last a lifetime. VSOSoM Early Years classes are designed to develop strong musical foundations in an engaging and stimulating way, whilst also building skills in literacy and numeracy, and the social skills which set them up for future learning. Spring Sports Camp (Ages 8-12) A fun class for anyone who loves to play soccer and basketball. Learn to play the most beautiful game one week and learn how to improve your shooting and handles the next.

Children Soccer (Ages 6-12) This program gives your children a positive introduction to sport by teaching high quality soccer skills in a friendly, pressure-free environment. Fundamentals and team skills will be emphasized.

Wednesdays, January 5 – Ongoing 5:30 – 6:30 pm $60/12 Sessions $6 Drop-in Dance Fusion (New) The easy-to-follow dance-fitness choreography to popular Latin and radio hits in this high-energy dance-fitness fusion class will get your heart pumping and sweat dripping while having a blast. These routines incorporate interval training, alternating fast and slow rhythm to help improve cardiovascular fitness PLUS using weights with some routines for toning. All ages and levels of fitness are welcome.

Mondays, January 10 -Ongoing 6:00 – 7:00 pm $60/12 Sessions $6 Drop-in Boxing Fit / Cardio Box This aerobic boxing class requires no experience in boxing techniques. Movements follow the music to get a fun, high-energy, simple cardio workout with an infusion of strength-building moves. Using simple boxing drills, you can choose your impact level to raise your heart rate and sweat it out. This class also includes intervals using weights to build strength. Recreation Programs: Winter 2022 Seniors Recreation Activities at CNH Zumba Gold Combines catchy Latin tunes with choreography for an aerobic workout that feels like dance party. It is accessible for beginners, seniors or others needing modification in their exercise routines.

Chinese Calligraphy This program is meant for seniors who are interested in the art of Chinese calligraphy.

It contains a brief history of Chinese calligraphy and introduces the basic elements of the standard Chinese calligraphy script known as “9”, with step by step instructions for each of the 8 basic strokes. Practicing Chinese calligraphy can help with emotional stability, stress relief, concentration, and cognition.

January 2022 Happy New Year – 2022 Will be Better

It can only get better from here on. Vaccines and booster shots are available, and Vancouver will be opening in most areas.

Back to working in the office, either full-time or a few days a week we will begin seeing more familiar faces, more people having breakfast, lunch and dinner. We have seen some new restaurants and businesses opening over the past few months.
