MAKE THE MOST OF THE MAGIC BEAT THE QUEUES – Many theme parks offer a pass such as Disney’s FastPass or Universal’s Unlimited Express to enable you to skip the standby queues for your favourite rides and experiences. They are worth considering if you want to enjoy as many rides as possible. GO THE DISTANCE – A day at a theme park can be tiring so make sure you pace yourself and take breaks and food stops. Whatever happens, don’t be tempted to leave early as many of the parks really come to life once darkness falls, with events such as the firework show at Cinderella’s Castle in Disney’s Magic Kingdom and live music at Universal’s CityWalk.

The beautiful shores of Lake Balaton.
Lake Balaton by Bike BY E VA N R A I L
Lake Balaton is a major draw for tourists visiting Hungary. Here we reveal just one of many ways to explore the Hungarian lake region – on two wheels… Beaches, swimming and sailing may be the main attractions in Lake Balaton, but its bike trail through forested hillsides, with the sunlight glinting off Balaton’s calm waters, has become a popular way to holiday here. Lake Balaton’s eastern end is a leisurely two-hour drive from Budapest. The quieter north shore is where you’ll find wineries and stately cities like Balatonfüred. A day’s cycling around the lake can take you 16 to 40 kilometres or more. Pick up cycling maps at the visitor centre in Balatonfüred and look out for our recommended stops along the way. Balatonfüred is a city of imposing holiday villas built for Hungarian high society in the Belle Epoque era. Enjoy the faded Austro-
Hungarian aristocratic charm, then stroll the tree-lined Tagore promenade, where youngsters and old-timers with fishing rods mix at the water’s edge. Badacsony is a 40-kilometre drive west of Balatonfüred. Be sure to take snaps of the cupcake-shaped mountain with interlocking villages at its base. The lakeside slopes are covered mostly in vines. In part, the region’s great vintages inspired József Egry, an Expressionist painter who lived and worked in town. You can see some of his works at the József Egry Memorial Museum. Past the western corner of the lake you’ll find the spa town of Hévíz, where you can rent bikes at the tourist office. And when in Hévíz… Be sure to take a dip in the town’s thermal lake (€8 for three hours). It’s famous for treating ailments, though most visitors come for relaxation. A long soak in the slightly sulfurous, warm water should be enough to get you back on your bike to take in the 19th century architecture of this historic village and lakeside landscapes.

The charming centre of Málaga draws plenty of sun-hungry holidaymakers each year. This modern yet historic destination, birthplace to Picasso, oozes creativity. It is also a lively Mediterranean port with plenty of pretty beaches to tantalise every kind of tourist! The further east you head, the more stunning they get. El Palo is family-friendly and has plenty of amenities to keep everyone busy. Or if you prefer to relax with the locals, we recommend the Rincon de la Victoria, a vast sandy retreat with plenty of space to sunbathe! Wind down in the evening with a sardine supper and a refreshing drink by the sea – you could even try your hand at Salsa dancing. Part of Málaga’s strong appeal is that it’s perfect for day trips that include both a bit of sightseeing and lazy afternoons on sandy shores. Many are within an hour’s drive, so it’s easy to explore a few while on holiday.

Nerja, a once sleepy fishing village and now a rather lively town, features white-washed houses and meandering paths. Follow the signs for the Balcón de Europa for superb views across the ocean. El Playazo beach is Nerja’s longest beach and easy to approach, or head to Calahonda, Chorillo and Carabeo for tucked-away coves with extremely picturesque views and crystal clear waters. If you like your history, Tarragona is famed for its seaside-facing Roman Ampitheatre and its stunning 200 kilometres of coastline, known as the ‘Costa Daurada’. Nearby Platja Llarga gets our vote – calm waters and fine sands in an eternally sunny bay, perfect for lounging on, whatever the season. Or try the Cala Jovera, a tiny treat of a bay only 90 metres long, close to the Tamarit Castle and feels like your own private paradise. For a ‘stretch of coast with the most’, head to Málaga or Tarragona and its surrounding towns where there are plenty of places to put your towel down and soak up the sun. Viikinsaari Tampere, Finland Take the 20-minute boat trip from Tampere to the pretty marina, and then make for this small, popular sandy beach where you can picnic and swim. Partly nature reserve, partly Tampere’s summer playground, Viikinsaari Island makes a good half-day trip before heading for the nearby Angry Birds Park.
Baga Beach Goa, India Baga Beach is part of the long section of sand that makes up the Goan beachfront and offers much more than just umbrellas and shelling. Water sports are huge here – you’ll find everything from parasailing to wakeboarding – and when the sun goes down, the party really gets going.

Walk on the frozen waters of Suomenlinna.
PHOTOS: ALAMY, VISIT FINLAND (2).
Magical Delights Lapland means Father Christmas who lives, as everybody knows, at Rovaniemi just above the Arctic Circle. You need to plan a whole day here, as it is 170 kilometres from Ylläs and 130 kilometres from Pyhä. Santa Claus Holiday Village is a place where children get caught up in the excitement of seeing the Elf School, the Gingerbread Kitchen, the Post Office and meeting Father Christmas himself. There’s an indoor sleigh ride taking you past animals and scenes from well-known fairy tales; you can walk under the Arctic Circle, have a drink in the frozen Ice Gallery and see how Christmas is celebrated around the world. Every age can quite happily go back to their childhood; after all Santa Claus is a magical figure. The Northern Lights offer more magic. The Aurora Borealis might be the result of high energy electrons colliding with oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules, but for centuries, people believed they were seeing the spirits of the dead, or flaming air coming through cracks in the sky, or the terrifying spectacle of an angry God. As you watch nature’s most audacious show of ever changing lights dancing and swirling around the heavens above, you’ll find it difficult to believe the scientists and their theories.
City Sights In Helsinki, the blanket of snow that covers the city gives a very different view of Finland’s capital. Even if you’ve been to Helsinki before, start with a ride on Tram 2. Hop on at Market Square for a circular tour around the main areas and glimpse the snowy parks and gardens around the diplomatic district of Eira, buildings such as the lakeside opera house and the old Olympic Stadium, together with expanses of the frozen Baltic Sea. Ice and snow may be a regular part of Finnish winter life but even for locals, walking over the solid sea to the island of Seurasaari on a bright sunny winter’s day is one of life’s special experiences. Seurasaari is tucked into an inland bay of the Baltic where the sea freezes early. For a real pioneering feeling, take the 15-minute ferry out to one of the biggest sea fortresses in the world. The boat pushes slowly through the sparkling ice, cracking its way from the harbour to the rocky island where Suomenlinna castle was built in 1748 to guard Helsinki. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the former buildings that housed the sailors, soldiers, officers and governor are now private houses, cafés, restaurants and museums, with the main museum open throughout the year.

Take Three Maltese Moments Malta is rich in history, friendly people and stunning landscapes. So be sure to visit at least one of these attractions on your holiday.
Sweethaven Popeye Village Anchor Bay, Mellieha
Marsaxlokk Fish Market Marsaxlokk
The 1980s movie Popeye was filmed in Malta, and the Sweethaven Village film set has grown into one of the most popular attractions on the island. Visitors are greeted by Popeye and friends, while families will love being part of the filming experience. Mini golf, boat rides, water trampoline and a fun park all await children for a day of fun-filled action.
For a slice of local living, visit this market and buy some of the freshest fish and seafood – often caught the very same day – at cheaper prices than you will find in the shops. The market has become so popular that it now sells other local produce, including jams, wines and vegetables. Watching the colourful boats, or luzzus, bobbing on the water is another reason to visit Marsaxlokk. Open Sundays until 12.30.
