We hope that you have had a wonderful summer and have enjoyed an RCI Exchange Holiday to warmly remember through the winter months. If you’re planning your next big adventure, don’t forget to make use of the RCI .com tools to narrow down your search – the world is, after all, a big place waiting to be explored. The search for the great golfing holiday takes many to the greens of Portugal… But why not try the Dominican Republic? It has some lush golf courses, great all-inclusive stay options, plus lots of pampering treatments to enjoy, either while your partner is on the green or as a way for you both to relax and unwind. See page 16 for our His and Hers guide to the fabulous Caribbean island, with our incredible resort offers bringing you great value breaks. Orlando is the one place on earth which is guaranteed to capture the hearts and minds of children of all ages and adults alike. In our feature on page 32, we provide the lowdown on all the newest rides and attractions, along with sneak peeks of what’s to come. Be inspired and get ready for those big smiles on the children’s faces when they realise where they are going next year. ‘One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things’ said American author Henry Miller, and something which resonated with your Publications team while working on ideas for this issue. Though we all have our favourite holidays, it’s good to keep an open mind to all that is new and different. Using the search facility on RCI .com to filter through the things that tick our holiday boxes, such as destination or activities, we were surprised by the different things to do in familiar places, as well as new locations in which to enjoy what we like doing best. It certainly made us view places and holiday planning in a new way and we’d recommend you challenge yourself to look at your holiday world with new eyes! On page 38 we share some of our surprise findings using the holiday search filters on RCI .com. Remember, today’s new adventure could become tomorrow’s favourite holiday. At this time of year, our thoughts turn to Christmas. Ring the changes by taking the family to Lapland this year to kick off the festive season in great spirit. A visit to Santa will always please the little ones, but as I hope you’ll agree after reading our feature on page 54, from snowy walks and winter safaris, to a stopover in Helsinki for the Christmas markets and Ice Park – and much more – Finland is truly a winter wonderland. As always, I love to hear about your holiday plans, so drop me a line at EV@RCI .com and let me know how you’re getting on and where you’re going!

Welcome Your Autumn/Winter edition of Endless Vacation is the ideal companion to curl up with during the cooler nights, and picture faraway places to warm your heart and, of course, inspire your next chapter of holiday exploration. To help you get off on your next break, we are committed to making sure you are using your membership to the fullest. Following some feedback from RCI members, in this issue we feature a guide that explains – very simply – how to search for and book your RCI Exchange Holiday, making it the best it can be. See our guide from page 62 and put your learning to good use on RCI. com. Those little extras are also important too, so we have packed in some great resort offers to help your holiday spends go further. Even if you’ve enjoyed a fabulous summer break or special holiday already this year, it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve another treat. Beat those winter blues, put your fuel bills on ice and plan a minigetaway to brighten up the darker months - and start planning for summer 2015.

We hope you are enjoying ‘surfing’ on your refreshed RCI .com and taken some time to look around the site and explore the range of holiday destinations which could feature in your 2015 holiday album. It is very tempting to revisit that firm favourite which the whole family loves but, in 2015, we would like to challenge you to try somewhere new at least once. Make a New Year’s resolution to surprise yourself and fill your photo album with lots of new stories to tell. In our 40th anniversary year, we have been looking at our milestone moments and, pure and simply, our job throughout the years has remained the same: to send you on some great holidays which enrich your life and add to your collection of holiday memories. Once you return to the comforts of home, help your fellow RCI members by leaving a resort review on RCI .com – it goes a long way in helping others make their decision!

Letters from our readers Madeira Moments

Love of Landals

We really enjoyed your 40th special edition of Endless Vacation magazine, many congratulations! We are big fans of RCI for the choice and quality. We love holidaying in Madeira and have been there for the last three years, having stayed at Pestana Madeira Beach Club (1390), and also the Porto Mare Residence (6687) which are fabulous resorts. Now we are exploring the Canaries and have made even more wonderful memories.

First of all, we would like to thank you for suggesting Landal GreenParks to us, especially Arnhem in Holland! Our children were so excited when they saw the facilities, including the huge interactive playgrounds, football, indoor heated pool and waterslide. We also loved the woodland setting with rabbits, squirrels and many other animals as our forest companions. We strongly recommend other RCI members visit Landal GreenParks, and we hope to visit again soon!

– John Bridges, Suffolk. RCI Member for 4 years. See Page 31 for the Bridge’s holiday experiences in Madeira!

– Ada Galomitakou and George Papachristou, Greece. RCI Members for 18 years.

Magic of Mexico We are new to RCI and enjoyed our first trip to Cancun, Mexico, staying at the Imperial Fiesta Club at Hotel Casa Maya (1386). With powder white sands, bright blue-green waters and glorious weather, we couldn’t have asked for a better setting. We spent a lot of time relaxing at the resort, and took part in the resort activities – my husband came second in the dart tournament finals and my son enjoyed the dance competition at one of the other resorts. Mexico was a dream come true and we plan to travel to more new places. We also plan to try the Extra Holidays as well. – Gloria and Michael Towne, New Hampshire. RCI Members for 8 months.

Our May Deposit Prize Draw winners were Martin and Gaynor Catanach from Northamptonshire, who won £250 Marks & Spencer vouchers. “We were so surprised and excited when we learned of our win. Going Platinum For Dr Pankaj Thakrar and his family, pictured, RCI Platinum membership has brought a whole new dimension to the way they holiday. Dr Thakrar tells Endless Vacation why he believes the £49 spent on his RCI membership upgrade was money well spent. “We used priority access to get our pick of some fantastic James Villa properties and have taken two villa holidays in Majorca. We took our two daughters and both of our own parents, so having such wonderfully spacious accommodation was

brilliant, and works really well,” he said. “We are going on another villa holiday to Cyprus shortly. James Villa Holidays are expensive to rent and it is very exciting to be able to use our Platinum membership to access them – you can’t beat that for value.” The family have also used RCI Platinum membership unit upgrades and value the peace of mind that comes with Tag&Track luggage tracking. “Platinum is fantastic value,” added Dr Thakrar, “it pays for itself over and over.”

TEE TIME TEASERS BY L ARRY OLMSTED

Picking an island for the perfect Caribbean holiday can be a daunting task, but picking one for the perfect Caribbean golf holiday is easy. The DR has a golf course for every taste, from time-honoured classics to cutting-edge modern interpretations, in a who’s who of acclaimed designers. Golf here is also exceedingly tourist friendly - just about every top DR course is public, open to resort guests and outsiders alike. Punta Cana, on the easternmost coast, has become a hotbed for golf. This started with La Cana, the brainchild of PB Dye, Pete Dye’s son and an acclaimed designer in his own right. The course is part of the Punta Cana Resort & Club, an upscale residential community whose owners include singer Julio Iglesias and designer Oscar de la Renta. The younger Dye added drama to an already gorgeous oceanfront setting by creating deep pot bunkers and high grassy mounds, all interspersed with

swaying palms and uninterrupted sea views. The four shoreline holes are key highlights for the avid golfer. Nearby is the 12,000-hectare Cap Cana resort community, featuring Punta Espada golf course, designed by the most legendary name in the game, Jack Nicklaus. With ocean views from every hole, Punta Espada received rave reviews; it has already hosted a Champions (Senior PGA) Tour tournament. It’s believed that the toughest hole on the course is the Par 5, second hole, with a 558-metre dog-legging past a tidal lake and beach bunker. The final big-name addition to Punta Cana is the Faldo Legacy Course. Designed by six-time major winner Nick Faldo, it winds through mangrove forests and along four lakes before climbing steeply to a stunning finale on rocky cliffs above the ocean. Holes 17 and 18, nicknamed Los Dos Rezos, or two prayers, because golfers play over not one, but two ocean inlets. On the north shores of the DR, the two courses designed by the late great Robert Trent Jones, Sr. are not to be missed. While the options may be limited, prices are considerably lower: This region offers the island’s best golf value.

It’s the island’s most classic design, with a wooded parkland style that might recall the Carolinas, were it not for the abundant palm trees and sudden appearance of the beach at the sixth hole. The most challenging hole is the fourth hole, par 4, where golfers tee straight off from a narrow pine grove at a right angle, while battling the sea breeze. For the scenery, the ninth hole gets our vote, for views of Isabel Torres Hill. Nearby Playa Grande in Cabrera is a hidden gem, set in a beautiful and otherwise undeveloped 809-hectare swathe of coastal jungle. The course is claimed to be the last designed by Jones, the father of modern golf-course architecture. Whether or not that’s true, Playa Grande is a must-play. Considered the Pebble Beach of the Caribbean, it sits atop dramatic cliffs at the edge of the sea. There are some differences however, as Pebble Beach has nine of these famous cliff-top holes, whereas Playa Grande counts an even dozen. And Playa Grande is one-fifth the price. The front nine holes measure nearly two miles, with the seventh hole the most notable, as the green sits behind a rocky inlet.

ntil the 20th century, milkmaids and women called gangocheras (traders) walked Tenerife’s trails barefoot, slipping into their shoes only when they got to town. Today’s hikers follow in their footsteps. Trekking puts you in touch with Tenerife’s rich history both pre- and post-1494 Spanish conquest, and also reveals the island’s many faces.

Here are three hikes in northern Tenerife, where daytime temperatures generally hover at 21 degrees year-round. And look out for the odd choza along the way. Choza means shelter. These wood or stone huts, originally built to shelter goatherds, now provide a shady retreat for walkers to enjoy a picnic lunch.

The Five Senses

Views of Anaga Rural Park.

Sendero de los Sentidos Excellent for families with young hikers, the Trail of the Senses consists of three historic paths through Anaga Rural Park, at the north-eastern end of the island. The longest trail, about a mile, passes several lookout points. Signs at designated spots suggest that hikers stop and use one of their five senses. Children will enjoy touching a beard of moss or bark as prickly as stubble. One sign asks visitors to close their eyes and use a rope to guide themselves while cocooned by woodland sounds.

EAT Bodegas Monje. This vineyard near the Sendero Los Sentidos has a restaurant where you can sample local wines. 36 Camino Cruz de Leandro, El Sauzal.

Under the volcano

Couple hiking in Teide National Park.

Teide Volcano Summit Mount Teide, a dormant volcano, is the highest point in Spain (at 3,717 metres) and the crown jewel of Teide National Park. Teide (pronounced tay-dee) can be crowded in summer and, because of the high elevation, snowy in winter - the latter will prevent any ascent to the crater. The best time to hike Teide is in spring and autumn, when it’s not too hot or too cold. There are several ways to reach the crater, where hot vapour and sulphurous gases tickle the nostrils. The easiest is to ride the cable car most of the way up and then walk the remaining 167 metres on the Telesforo Bravo trail, which is

still challenging and especially rewarding on a clear day, when the other Canary Islands shimmer in the distance. During the ascent, take it slow and drink lots of water. Striding off too fast is likely to result in altitude sickness. You’ll need a permit (free) to access the crater; only 200 people are allowed on the peak daily. Processing takes at least two weeks, but check to see if your tour outfitter will sort the paperwork.

EAT Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide A restaurant inside the only hotel in Teide National Park, next to Roques de García. On the menu: Fresh grouper with mojos (spicy sauces).

Magnificent Mountains Masca Village Masca is a small mountain village, just an hour’s drive from Adeje and it is well worth the drive, owing to the stunning views. The odd cluster of buildings sprinkled against the mountainside of lush flora and fauna, overlook the Bay of Masca. As you enter Masca, the sights are typical of a Spanish village, with a small church and shops selling local crafts and wares. It is almost a step back in time wandering through the village, unsurprising considering that the road was only connected to the outside world in 1991! Breathtaking views suddenly open out which really take you by surprise, so make sure you have plenty of space on your camera. The Masca Gorge is considered by many as the most spectacular hike of the

Canary Islands. A range of tour outfitters organise the 3.5 - hour trip, consisting of a somewhat challenging hike down through the valley, between the majestic cliffs, down to the Bay of Masca where you catch the boat back to Los Gigantes. Tours can vary slightly between provider, and most will offer transfers to and from your hotel. Make sure you are wearing good footwear to walk around the village, even if you do not take part in the hike and just come to admire the stunning views and the peace and quiet of the valley with the odd call of a bird for company – while you lose yourself in the spectacular landscape, miles away from civilisation.

EAT Chez Arlette Dine here to savour not just the cuisine, but the stunning views out on the terrace too – you will not be disappointed.

many vibrant gardens. Exotic plants and flowers from Africa, America, Oceania and Asia took to the island’s climate so well that they now grow freely there. Birds of paradise, begonias and magnolias are just some of the blooms you can expect to see filling parks and gardens, with splashes of colour and aromatic scents. If it is your first visit, the Madeira Botanical Garden featuring over 2,000 plants is a great place to start, while in April you can enjoy the Flower Festival. adeira is well-known for its mild climate and awe-inspiring landscapes, as well as its charming, friendly people. For a mix of truly fresh air and views of nature at its finest, Laurrisilva forest should be your first stop. Madeira is home to the largest area of the Laurrisilva forest to be found anywhere in the world with 15,000 hectares mostly on the northern slopes of the island. During your walk, you will be amazed by the levadas, or irrigation canals, built almost 600 years ago to deliver water across the island. The Great Exploration A two-hour boat trip northeast will bring you to Porto Santo, an island off the coast of Madeira, where Christopher Columbus planned his trip to discover America. The house where Columbus lived with his wife Filipa de Moniz, the daughter of the colonial captain of Porto Santo, and their son, is now a museum dedicated to the time when Porto Santo was his home. Discover, like many explorers before you, its balmy turquoise waters, golden sands and earthy hues. Columbus regularly travelled to Madeira’s capital Funchal, to deal with sugar cane business matters – from the end of the 15th century, sugar cane turned the capital into an international business hub and a major port of call on the Atlantic sailing routes. Did you know Funchal, is named after fennel (funcho is Portuguese for fennel), as it grows naturally on the hillsides surrounding the town? Frequented by the rich and famous, the best way

to view Funchal and its surrounding landscape is by cable car. Leaving from the Old Town, the panorama will leave you feeling rather blessed and majestic too! Back on ground, wandering through the cobblestone streets, you will feel like time has stood still, as you look around to find you’re surrounded by living history. The Finest Flavours Madeira wine is one of the most internationally renowned produce of the island. The fortified wine encompasses a history and culture of over five centuries, with its unique ageing process of more than 100 years. The result is a very rich and impressive range of colours of golden and amber hues, with harmonious aromas from caramel to cinnamon. Loved by poets, explorers and adventurers alike, there is a Madeiran wine to accompany any meal, from aperitifs to complementing your end of meal coffee. See Madeira wine in production at Blandy’s Wine Lodge, in the centre of Funchal, on a wine tour and tasting. Guides will take you through the 200-year history behind the label, its development and evolution, and there is the opportunity to taste the wines through the ages from young wines to vintage varieties. The Premium Tour is the most comprehensive, from the making of the barrels through to tasting (tour €5.50 per person) or alternatively discover the maturing process of the wines on the Vintage Tour and view the Blandy family’s private collection of impressive bottles and vintages (tour €13 per person).

Wickerwork is one of the main manufacturing industries in Madeira, and Camacha is the largest centre of production, with its products exported all over the world. Take a tour of the wicker factory showroom in Camacha to see how it’s made and perhaps purchase a wicker product from its wide collection. A trip to the archipelago would not be complete without a wicker sledge ride from Monte to town. Dating back to 1850, merchants would use them to transport their wares quickly from Monte to Funchal. Something of a thrill, two guides, or carreiros, will guide and control the sledge’s descent. RCI MEMBER EXPERIENCE The Bridges family from Newmarket, share what they love about their island retreats in Madeira and Gran Canaria…

J

ohn and Helen Bridges have enjoyed many fabulous family holidays with their two children, Oliver and Oscar, in their own holiday home – a converted barn in north Norfolk. Boat trips along the waterways of The Broads have been highlights of their stays, together with fun on the beaches, their favourite being Wells-next-the-Sea. Eventually, as beautiful as the Broadlands are, the family wanted to venture overseas to try something completely different. RCI proved to be the answer to the Bridges’ holiday dreams, since using the RCI exchange programme four years ago they have been following the sun across Portugal and the Canary Islands. The couple’s holiday plans start with a search on RCI.com: “We love the new

website, it’s fantastic and so easy to use. We usually search based on RCI Gold Crown rating and look at the member reviews to whittle down our options,” said John. Madeira is a firm family favourite, after three exchanges there. “We have stayed at the Pestana Madeira Beach Club (1390), and also the Porto Mare Residence (6687). They both have great facilities with big pools, games rooms to keep the children entertained and to meet other children. “Madeira is ideal, at around 25 degrees it’s perfect for us to soak up the sun, relax by the pool or go sightseeing. “We love the traditional family beach holiday to relax and enjoy some time together. The island is perfect for us, as the locals are so welcoming, and it is a safe place to holiday.”

We asked John for his top tips: “The restaurants in the Old Town of Funchal are great value and worth the €6 taxi ride from your resort. It’s great to get out in the evening after a day by the pool and see another area of the island. “The wicker tobogganing is a mustdo while you’re there, as it is a major draw to the island and so unique. It’s about a ten-minute ride from the top, on normal streets, and the turns round some corners are real eye-openers. It is really good fun.” While Madeira doesn’t have those typical golden sands you expect on a sun holiday, the beauty of timeshare exchange, as the Bridges discovered, means the family do not have to miss out. “We have just returned from Gran Canaria, as we wanted to enjoy the beach and Oliver tried jet-skiing, which he absolutely loved. Ever since he got back he’s asked us to buy him one but I think water sports in the warm Atlantic Ocean will be somewhat different to jet-skiing on The Broads!” The Bridges took a boat trip around the island to the marina in Mogan, where they enjoyed a spot of lunch before catching the boat back to the resort. “We even had the chance to do some dolphin watching. Though we didn’t spot anything, it was still good fun taking part in the search!”

Spellbound In Orlando Orlando is the ultimate family holiday destination, with an array of ever-evolving attractions to amaze and astound. STEVE ADAMS rounds up the latest experiences at some of the top theme parks.

T

he magical theme parks of Orlando have been casting a spell on visitors ever since Walt Disney World first opened its doors in 1971, and the one constant about this incredible entertainment capital is that it never stands still. Orlando conjures up ever more thrilling experiences for its visitors, year on year. This year is no exception, with a range of fabulous new attractions opening and the finishing touches being put to many more.

UNIVERSAL DELIGHTS One of the latest new attractions is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort, which opened in 2010 but this year brings even more of the young wizard’s adventures to life courtesy of the addition of Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express. The former brilliantly recreates the wizards’ area of London, complete with shops and restaurants from JK Rowling’s books and movies, as well as Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts — a fully immersive indoor roller coaster that uses 3D technology to pull riders into an incredible adventure. Hogwarts Express is a thrilling new steam train ride that connects King’s Cross Station at Diagon Alley with Hogsmeade Village, located at sister park, Islands of Adventure. Passengers enjoy different experiences depending on which direction they travel, with the fun provided by live actors, as well as a range of special effects. If that’s not enough, last year Universal Orlando Resort also launched a themed area based on The Simpsons’ home town of Springfield, and Transformers: The Ride-3D that puts riders in the middle of a battle between the Autobots and Decepticons (ask the kids if I’ve lost you there). Finally, a new-look CityWalk complex is under way with a fascinating range of new places to eat, including The Cowfish Sushi-Burger Bar – yes, you read this correctly – and the Hot Dog Hall of Fame, which serves a variety of hot dogs from baseball stadiums all over the US and sounds like a grand slam home run to me.

DISNEY MAGIC Another Orlando attraction that continues to hit it out of the park is the daddy of them all – Walt Disney World Resort. Its latest development is New Fantasyland, which represents the largest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom Park, and adds an array of spectacular new attractions, dining, shopping and more, all laid out in a fairytale setting surrounded by waterfalls, grottoes, circus big tops and more.

The key areas are the Enchanted Forest and Storybook Circus, where visitors can not only see classic Disney stories brought to life, but be placed right at the heart of the action with characters such as Dumbo and Goofy. The undoubted highlight of the new area is the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a family roller coaster featuring unique ‘ore cars’ that swing back and forth around the bends of the track in the mine ‘where a million diamonds shine’. To add to the fun, the interactive journey includes music from the classic movie and scenes starring Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs and various forest critters, with characters brought to life through state-of-the-art animatronics. Another railroad attraction at New Fantasyland is the Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station where youngsters can cool off in the company of monkeys, elephants and camels – who all squirt water at them. In between the rides, make sure you catch a glimpse of the Festival of Fantasy Parade – a daytime procession starring characters and music from memorable Disney films – as well as new shopping experiences and a selection of places to eat that range from a quick-serve tavern to elegant ballroom-style dining.

FUN BUILDERS And while those last two venues sound ideal for the adults, then one of Orlando’s newest theme parks is putting its focus very much on the other end of the market. LEGOLAND Florida only opened in 2011, but has expanded three times since then, and the latest development is DUPLO Valley, which brings a range of its pre-school building toys to life. The attractions include a train ride, play barn and splash-and-water-play area, perfect for toddlers aged two to five. The park also caters for family members of all ages, with more than 50 rides, shows and attractions, as well as a delightful botanical garden and waterpark.

SEAWORLD’S WONDERS It’s a case of water, water everywhere at Aquatica Orlando, SeaWorld’s waterpark, where the latest slide attraction is sure to be a splash hit with thrill seekers. Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is a massive free-fall waterslide that sees riders released, one-by-one from three clear boxes, to plunge down an almost vertical drop of nearly 12 metres. SeaWorld has also splashed out on new attractions of its own. Last year it opened Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin – an interactive ride that gives visitors the chance to explore a penguin colony and come face-to-face with over 250 Kings, Gentoos and Adélies. 2014 also sees SeaWorld celebrate its 50th anniversary with extra performances, animal interactions and surprise giveaways for park guests. And the eating options at SeaWorld really take some beating. You can watch sharks from your table at Sharks Underwater Grill, while Dine With Shamu gives you a poolside view of the fabulous whale performances.

EYE SPY! Views of a totally different nature will be on offer when Orlando’s newest attraction opens in Spring 2015. The Orlando Eye is a giant observation wheel that will be the tallest structure in Central Florida and offer panoramic views for miles around during its 20-minute circuit. The ride – a sister to the iconic London Eye – is at the heart of a development officially known as I-Drive 360, which also houses an array of restaurants, shops and attractions, including a SEA LIFE Aquarium, Madame Tussauds wax museum and a water fountain show. The magic never stops in Orlando. Every year there will always be so many great new reasons to return with your family to experience something different.

MAKING THE MOST OF THE MAGIC BEAT THE QUEUES

PLAN AHEAD

Many theme parks offer a pass such as Disney’s FastPass+ (three a day being free of charge) or Universal’s Unlimited Express to enable you to skip the standby queues for your favourite rides and experiences. They are worth considering if you want to enjoy as many rides as possible.

To ensure you make the most of your day, do a little research to get an idea of the rides, shows and attractions you really want to see – as well as their locations – and plan your trip around them.

GO THE DISTANCE A day at a theme park can be tiring so make sure you pace yourself and take breaks and food stops. Whatever happens, don’t be tempted to leave early as many of the parks really come to life once darkness falls, with events such as the firework show at Cinderella’s Castle in Disney’s Magic Kingdom and live music at Universal’s CityWalk.

MAKE A MEAL OF IT Theme park food has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and is now part of the experience. If sausage and mash at the Leaky Cauldron wizarding pub in Diagon Alley isn’t to your taste, how about an iconic Chicago frankfurter at CityWalk’s Hot Dog Hall of Fame or a warm cinnamon roll at Gaston’s Tavern at Disney.

The beautiful shores of Lake Balaton.

SEARCH FOR LAKES

Lake Balaton by Bike B Y E VA N R A I L

Lake Balaton is a major draw for tourists visiting Hungary and with ‘Lakes’ being a popular search on RCI.com, here we reveal just one of many ways to explore the Hungarian lake region – on two wheels. Beaches, swimming and sailing may be the main attractions in Lake Balaton, but its bike trail has quickly become another major draw. Almost flat, cyclists can focus on the forested hillsides, a nightingale’s call or the sunlight glinting off Balaton’s calm waters. Lake Balaton’s eastern end is a leisurely two-hour drive from Budapest. The quieter north shore is where you’ll find historic cathedrals, wineries and stately cities like Balatonfüred. Drive to different starting points and take off for a day’s cycling around the lake – anywhere from 10 to 25 miles or more. Pick up cycling maps at the visitor

centre in Balatonfüred. You’ll need water bottles, but not much else. There are restaurants and cafés in almost every village. Here is our guide to four places to stop at along the way. Balatonfüred is a city of imposing holiday villas built for Hungarian high society in the Belle Epoque era. Enjoy the faded Austro-Hungarian aristocratic charm, then stroll the tree-lined Tagore promenade, where youthful bon vivants and old-timers with fishing rods and bottles of wine mix at the water’s edge. Tihany is an historic village five miles west from here, on a hilly peninsula jutting into the lake. Take time to visit the baroque Tihany Abbey, whose crypt houses the 11th century tomb of King Andrew the White. Badacsony is a 25-mile drive west of Balatonfüred and be sure to take snaps of the cupcake-shaped mountain with interlocking villages at its base. The lakeside slopes are covered mostly in grapevines. In part, the region’s

great vintages inspired József Egry, an Expressionist painter who lived and worked in town. You can see some of his works at the József Egry Memorial Museum. Afterwards, drive west from Badacsony, past the medieval castle ruins of Szigliget, where a 12th century church tower still stands. Past the western corner of the lake you’ll find the spa town of Hévíz, where you can rent bikes at the tourist office. And when in Hévíz… Be sure to take a dip in the town’s thermal lake (€8 for three hours). It’s famous for treating all types of ailments – though most visitors today come for relaxation, not rehabilitation. A long soak in the slightly sulfurous, body-temperature water (and perhaps an invigorating 45-minute aromatherapy massage; €16) should be enough to get you back on your bikefor a lateafternoon cruise to take in the 19th century architecture of this historic village and lakeside landscapes.

Beach Life in Espana B Y K AT H E R I N E K I L PAT R I C K

Unsurprisingly, ‘Beaches’ is the number one holiday search on RCI.com. The charming centre of Málaga draws plenty of sun-hungry holidaymakers each year. This modern yet historic destination, birthplace to Picasso, oozes creativity. It also has the attraction of being a lively Mediterranean port with plenty of pretty beaches to tantalise every kind of tourist! The further east you head, the more stunning they get. El Palo is family-friendly and has plenty of amenities to keep everyone busy. Or if you prefer to relax with the locals, we recommend the Rincon de la Victoria, a vast sandy retreat with plenty of space to sunbathe! Wind down in the evening with a sardine supper and a glass of Sangria by the sea – you could even try your hand at Salsa dancing. Part of Málaga’s strong appeal is

its proximity to other seafront towns, perfect for day trips that include both a bit of sightseeing and lazy afternoons on sandy shores. Many are within an hour’s drive, so it’s easy to explore a few whilst on holiday. Nearby Tarragona is famed for its seaside-facing Roman Ampitheatre and its stunning 9 mile coastline, known to the Spanish as the ‘Costa Daurada’ (Golden Coast). Platja Llarga (Long Beach) gets our vote – calm waters and fine sands in an eternally sunny bay, perfect for lounging on, whatever the season – or try the Cala Jovera, a tiny treat of a bay only 90 metres long, close to the Tamarit Castle and feels like your own private paradise. For a taste of the high life, head to luxurious Marbella – southern Spain’s answer to St Tropez. Admire the Pleasure Craft harbours at Puerto Banus before heading to Playa Nagüeles, situated on the Golden Mile – the most exclusive

beach in town and a playground for the wealthy! Or for a more traditional Spanish setting, try splashing in the sea on the Rio Real Playa. After you’ve dried off, enjoy an authentic paella at Trocadero Arena restaurant on the waterfront! Nerja, a once sleepy fishing village and now a rather lively town, features white-washed houses and meandering paths – simply follow the signs for the Balcón de Europa which offers superb views across the ocean. El Playazo beach is small and sandy and easy to approach or head to Calahonda, Chorillo and Carabeo for tucked away coves with extremely picturesque views and crystal clear waters, great for snorkelling. If you are looking for a ‘stretch of coast with the most’, head to Málaga and its surrounding towns – there’s plenty of places to put your towel down and soak up the sun.

Ski school class at Smugglers’ Notch.

SEARCH FOR SKIING Vistas of Vermont BY SARAH TUFF

Skiing is the third most popular search term on RCI.com. Our search turned up snow loads of experiences to be had using ‘skiing’ as a search term. There’s more to ski destinations than the slopes, as we reveal in our guide to skiing and other great activities in Vermont. Vermont in the US and its sweet ski towns are awash with rich histories and modern attractions under a frosting of white snow in an American winter wonderland. Smugglers’ Notch in Jeffersonville, affectionately dubbed ‘Smuggs’ used to be home to early 19th century outlaws who would smuggle goods through the narrow pass in the Green mountains. Today, it’s best-known as an all-inclusive, family-friendly ski resort with three interconnected mountains and 404 hectares of terrain, a 795-metre vertical drop and an average annual snowfall of eight metres. You won’t find high-speed quads or gondolas at Smuggs - and that’s just the way locals like it. Slower chairlift rides means fewer people on the hill at one time. The toughest trails, such as Black

Hole (the only triple black diamond in the northeast), Liftline and F.I.S. wriggle down from Madonna Mountain, while Morse Mountain is a gigantic playground dusted with snow. Smuggs even has its own mascot, Mogul Mouse, and Burton Riglet Park for very young snowboarders. Meanwhile the teenagers are kept entertained with the resort’s videography camps and mountain boarding (think all-terrain downhill skateboarding). Hiring a car? Just the drive through Smugglers’ Notch is worth it, through a spectacular pass with cliffs of over 300 metres on both sides. Stowe has attracted city dwellers since the mid-19th century for its clean mountain air and stirring views of the state’s tallest peak, 1,339-metre-tall Mount Mansfield. As you sit with your skis dangling over the slopes on your way up Stowe’s Spruce Peak, you may find yourself contemplating which you’d have a better chance at: winning the annual Sugar Slalom happening over to your left, or securing one of the new, posh homes beneath your feet, whose hot tubs are big enough for scuba gear. Thanks to a recent, $400 million overhaul, most of these fantasies can be indulged at the upscale Spruce Peak base area, including piles of chocolate,

crackers and marshmallows for making s’mores around a fire after skiing. While Stowe Mountain Lodge anchors this side of the resort, you don’t have to be a guest there to catch a show at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center (sprucepeakarts.org) or to have a drink at the lodge’s bar. In the heart of the historic village, the 1818 Old Town Hall, houses the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum (vtssm.com), showcasing some 10,000 cold-weather curiosities, from gondolas to 10th Mountain Division uniforms. Stowe Mercantile (stowemercantile.com), just up the road, may have nearly as much stuff, but it’s all for sale: penny sweets, sleigh bells and stoneware mugs for picking up souvenirs for your family and friends. Chocoholics will want to head to Laughing Moon Chocolates (laughingmoonchocolates.com) for handmade treats. Back to skiing, and the fabled Front Four trails still send plenty of bruised knees and egos away from this area, with its 1,340-metre summit elevation and 116 trails. But it’s the combination of hard-core terrain, layers of tradition and mountain-inspired creativity that makes it such a winning ski town.

Literary wonders in the Lakes BY KATHERINE KILPATRICK

D

escribed as ‘the loveliest spot that man hath ever found’ by William Wordsworth; Grasmere in the Lake District is a magical holiday destination. Wordsworth, Britain’s Poet Laureate in 1843, now rests in St Oswald’s Church and the village aptly overflows with rows of daffodils in spring. Grasmere is extremely popular with tourists worldwide, many of whom wish to visit the poet’s home, the quaint rose covered ‘Dove Cottage’, while others come in search of Peter Rabbit – creation of Cumbrian writer, Beatrix Potter. The small and pretty village, named after its nearby lake, offers a great base for walkers, families or couples alike and the hospitality of those you’ll encounter from the local community is warm and neighbourly. Pull on a pair of hiking boots and

follow the trails around the lake itself. Stick to the glistening waters’ edge or if you are feeling adventurous, choose the higher trail along Loughrigg Terrace for panoramic views of Grasmere and Rydal Water. Ascend higher if you fancy a challenge – we promise that what you’ll discover is worth the effort, with a wonderful vista of several tarns (mountain lakes) and the full length of Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, all washed down with a swig of fresh mountain spring water and a piece of Kendal Mint Cake to re-energise. Afterwards, stroll back to the village and follow your nose to the tiny gingerbread shop tucked behind St Oswald’s Church. The spicy aroma you can smell is Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere gingerbread, cooked to a secret recipe, which is now locked away in the National Westminster Bank in Ambleside. Opposite is the Storyteller’s Garden; a wonderful highlight for children. In peak summer months, the garden is filled with youngsters perched on tree stumps

totally engrossed in the tales of Taffy Thomas, who has been telling stories here since 1970. Adults peer over the old slate walls hoping to get involved too! Other delightful resting spots include Baldry’s Tea Room where the lemon meringue pie steals the show and thirsty walkers can enjoy a well-deserved pint of local ale at Tweedies Bar right on the lakeside. There are several more walks to be explored in the area, one of the most famous being to the top of the ‘Lion and the Lamb’ – or wander past Dove Cottage and follow the road all the way along to Ambleside, which is home to some fantastic outdoor attire shops and offers trips on a traditional lake steamer along Windermere, stopping at Bowness or Lakeside, at your leisure. Evenings can be spent in a local pub pouring over your stunning photographs from your day’s outdoor adventure, or better yet, why not pop the kettle on in your cosy cottage and put your feet up in front of the fire… After all, they’ll need a rest!

hether you’re walking the coast of Wales for a few miles or a few weeks, you’re sure to hear the sound of warm laughter shared over a game of cards or a pint of ale. Hwyl (pronounced ‘hoyle’) is a way of life that the Welsh know and love, though struggle to define. Hwyl is all about fun. Good times with good company and even better conversation. Wales has all three in spades. At 870 miles, the Wales Coastal Path is the first footpath to trace a country’s entire coastline. It winds along cliff tops and through sand dunes, past medieval fortresses and shepherds’ cottages. Once you get a taste of Wales, you’ll want to share those special places with others. Here are a few of the best. Nearly every castle in Wales seems to be plucked from the fanciful imaginings of an artistically gifted child with a set of crayons. Castles here look exactly as castles are supposed to look, with drawbridges, moats and soaring stone towers. Today, roughly a hundred of these medieval fortifications still stand. Several can be found on the coast path, and Harlech Castle may be the most imposing of these. Rhossili is a strand unlike any other. In 1956, the peninsula’s extraordinary scenery brought it recognition as Britain’s very first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Backed by rolling greenery worthy of JRR Tolkien’s fantasy novels, spot the weathered hull of a 19th-century shipwreck peeking through the sand at low tide and the scattered remains of a medieval village hidden beneath the dunes. To add to the windswept serenity, this three-mile stretch of golden sand is some of the easiest walking anywhere on the trail. Wherever you are on the Coastal Path, you’re never more than a few miles from the next town, where a cosy pub awaits you. In Tenby, countless charming watering holes are wedged in among row

upon row of pastel-painted shops and restaurants. Dramatic scenery can be found in nearby Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and Caldey Island offers monk-made chocolate to day-trippers with a sweet tooth. Settle in and enjoy the seaside ambience. It doesn’t take much getting used to.

bandon stereotypes of the British seaside resort and check out Oban, with its history, culture and delicious temptations to be enjoyed throughout the year. Scotland’s west coast has something of the undiscovered about it. And for the people who enjoy relaxing breaks there, perhaps that’s a good thing. But let’s break rank on one of the country’s best kept secrets – the county of Argyll and Bute has landscapes that make you ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at any time of the year, thrilling adventures like sailing into the Corryvreckan whirpool – the world’s third largest – and many enticing islands. Meanwhile the coastal town of Oban has plenty to enthrall. Start your visit at the top of the town. High above Oban, McCaig’s Tower has panoramic views across Oban Bay and the Hebridean islands. Built in 1897 by banker John McCaig, the tower was never completed, but is a relaxed and peaceful escape with beautiful gardens. If you need an excuse and it’s cool outside, fortify yourself at Oban Distillery. Scottish whisky has been produced at the town centre distillery since 1794. During a tour you can discover how Oban whisky is made with its main flavours of honey, sea salt (the distillery is close to the beach), orange peel and smoke from the peated malted barley. Not only do you learn about the production process, you get to sample the final product as well! When you’re ready for lunch, head to

Oban’s harbour and local institution, The Seafood Shack. It has a wide selection of the freshest seafood Scotland has to offer, which you eat al fresco at an enormous wooden table, or can package to take back to your apartment. You can get a huge platter for two at a very reasonable £12.50. Alternatively there is a host of excellent seafood restaurants along the seafront where you can sit inside and take in wonderful views across Oban Bay. If chocolate is your thing, visit The Oban Chocolate Company. A café and working chocolate factory, where you’ll be met by delicious aromas as the chocolatiers prepare their handmade masterpieces.

C   HASING HISTORY IN

MÁLAGA   Spain’s Costa del Sol is about as far south as you can get before you run out of Europe. It’s one of the Continent’s sunniest places - and Málaga is one of its oldest cities where you’ll bump into history at every turn. BY A N DY S Y M I N G TO N

I

n Málaga, layer upon layer of the past brings visitors to the vibrant present of this Mediterranean port city. The walls, built by its Phoenician founders, lie beneath the 16th century palace that now houses the museum devoted to Málaga’s most famous son, Pablo Picasso. Nearly three millennia of history can be explored around the pedestrian town centre, the beating heart of the city.

40 YEARS OF HOLIDAYS

Ancient Beginnings After being founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, Málaga was ruled by the Carthaginians and the Romans. It was the Romans who built the beautifully located hillside amphitheatre during the rule of the emperor Augustus around the first century. The stone foundations of the stage building and much of the semi-circular stepped seating have been partially excavated and can be seen even when the amphitheatre

is closed (andalucia.com/cities/malaga; free admission). Just above the amphitheatre is the city’s most impressive historic monument, the Alcazaba (andalucia.com/cities/malaga; admission €2). After conquering Spain in AD 711, the Moors ruled Málaga for nearly eight centuries. Part palace, part fortress, the Alcazaba is a lovely place to visit; it has huge fountains, jasmine-scented gardens and spectacular vistas of the town below and the turquoise waters of the port. Moorish arches and fragments of delicate plasterwork decorate the palace complex. If you thought the views from here were good, stroll farther up the hill along a path shaded by carob trees to reach the Castillo de Gibralfaro (admission €4). This castle was built in the 14th century to defend the Alcazaba after artillery arrived on the European warfare scene. It was later modified by the Christian conquerors. There’s not a great deal on display, but the views are sensational. Have a drink on the

7

terrace of the Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro hotel, just below, and gaze at your leisure. The bathhouse, or hammam, was an important part of Moorish life. Little remains of Málaga’s original bathhouses, but you can still luxuriate after a long day of sightseeing in the relaxing ambience of El Hammam Spa (elhammamspa.com; standard session, €18). This recreated bathhouse, opulently decorated with tiles and Moorish lamps, has three steam rooms in which temperatures range from 86 to 104 degrees. Massage treatments are offered also. Book your visit in advance – to keep this place peaceful, admission is limited. The One-Armed Lady All this Moorish heritage raises the question, where’s the mosque? As in so many southern Spanish cities, the answer is, under the imposing cathedral, in this case La Catedral de la Encarnación (admission €3.50). Commissioned soon after Málaga was reconquered by Catholic monarchs in

1487, the cathedral was built over the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries by some of Spain’s finest Renaissance architects and sculptors. Today its nickname is the One-Armed Lady because of its lopsided appearance, as the planned second bell tower was never erected. Ornate choir stalls and stained glass are highlights of the monumental interior. Side chapels hold a rich collection of religious paintings and sculpture. Málaga’s Prodigious Son Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga in 1881 and lived here until he was 10. His first home, now the Casa Natal de Picasso (fundacionpicasso.malaga.eu; admission €2), is most interesting for Picasso’s ceramics and lithographs, though there’s also a selection of his parents’ personal belongings. The big draw, however, is the Museo Picasso Málaga (museopicassomalaga.org; admission €10), a handsome palace where a large collection of the artist’s works is

GUIDE TO PICASSO EXHIBITS The products of a prolific career spanning eight decades, Picasso’s works can be found in almost all the major art museums across the Western world — and even a few in Asia. The following exhibits are dedicated to his works and chronicle the varied phases of his colourful life.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía Although Picasso’s work is just part of this museum’s expansive collection, the Reina Sofía is home to some of his most important works, including Guernica, considered the most renowned anti-war art piece of all time. (museoreinasofia.es; admission from €8). Musée National Picasso Vallauris

Before permanently leaving Spain for an illustrious career in France, Picasso called Barcelona home for several years, and this museum features a whopping 4,250 pieces from the first few decades of his life, especially works from his Blue Period, at the turn of the century. (www.museupicasso.bcn.cat/en; admission from €11).

displayed. This is a prime opportunity to see the wide range of Picasso’s work in one place. The pieces are organised thematically, so you can easily appreciate how his portraiture, for example, changed over time. Many intimate portraits show those who were close to him, including a memorable one of Olga Khokhlova, the Ukrainian ballerina who would become his wife (Olga Khokhlova in Mantilla), and a sensitive depiction of his son (Portrait of Paulo With White Hat). Another shows his lover, the French artist Françoise Gilot (Woman in Armchair). The excellent temporary exhibitions usually have Picasso or his contemporaries as a theme. Snapshots of the Past The outstanding new Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga (carmenthyssenmalaga.org; admission, €6) focuses on 19th century Spanish art. It was a turbulent time in Spain, but you wouldn’t know it from these romantic depictions of the idealised south. Gypsies, flamenco, Easter processions, 5 0 AU T U M N / W I N T E R 2 0 1 4 |

Picasso spent seven years in Vallauris with his longtime mistress, Françoise Gilot, and experimented with pottery while living there. The town’s Picasso museum is largely focused on his playful ceramic creations. Also worth checking out is a massive mural called War and Peace (1955), a bold political statement juxtaposing hellish war scenes with idyllic rural life. (musee-picasso-vallauris.fr; admission €6).

lovers at window grilles, inns, mules, priests and bullfights: All the iconic images are beautifully represented here. A more realistic glimpse back in time is found at the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares (museoartespopulares.com; admission, €6). The 17th century building, once an inn, has a central patio decked with flowers. On display are oil and wine presses, clothing, fishing equipment, farm tools and other objects of the everyday past. Venerable Watering Holes But Málaga’s history isn’t all monuments and museums. Taverns that were already old when Picasso was a lad can still be found in the central lanes. The city is famous for its sherry-like wines; order a seco (dry) or dulce (sweet). The most atmospheric spot is the Antigua Casa de Guardia. Founded in 1840, its Málagan wines are poured from barrels lined up behind the bar, and accompanied by boiled prawns. The Bodega Bar El Pimpi, in a former wine warehouse, is filled with

40 YEARS OF HOLIDAYS

bullfighting memorabilia, azulejo tiles and photos of famous visitors. Look for a young Sean Connery and local boy Antonio Banderas when he brought Melanie Griffith home to meet the parents. And for an afterdinner drink, don’t miss Puerta Oscura. The elegant 19th century décor speaks of bygone years. After your drink, stroll along Muelle Uno, the glitzy new shopping strip by the harbour. The waterfront promenade is lined with orange trees and flanked by modern outlets selling goods that are all a little different on one side, and by exclusive yachts on the other. Dine here, by the sea, and enjoy stunning views of La Alcazaba to remind you of the city’s Moorish past. These days it’s doubtful that the Phoenicians would recognise their old port. While Málaga’s history is all around, the city isn’t tied to the past. Perhaps that’s because of the influences of successive civilisations - and, of course, a healthy dash of Picasso.

WINTER WONDERS: Home of Santa Claus in Rovaniemi (main picture) and the breathtaking Aurora Borealis (above).

City Sights

Ice and Lights

In Helsinki, the blanket of snow that covers the city gives a very different view of the capital of Finland. Even if you’ve been to Helsinki before, start with a ride on Tram 2. Hop on at Market Square for a circular tour around the main areas and glimpses of the snowy parks and gardens around the diplomatic district of Eira, buildings like the lakeside opera house and the old Olympic Stadium, together with expanses of the frozen Baltic Sea. Ice and snow may be a regular part of Finnish winter life but even for locals, walking over the solid sea to the island of Seurasaari on a bright sunny winter’s day is one of life’s special experiences. Seurasaari is tucked into an inland bay of the Baltic where the sea freezes early. For a more pioneering feeling, take the 15-minute ferry out to one of the biggest sea fortresses in the world. The boat pushes slowly through the sparkling ice, cracking its way from the harbour to the rocky island where Suomenlinna castle was built in 1748 to guard Helsinki. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the former buildings that housed the sailors, soldiers, officers and governor are now private houses, cafés, restaurants and museums, with the main museum open throughout the year.

The family can take to the ice at the outdoor Ice Park in front of the imposing granite railway station, designed by Eliel Saarinen. Two huge statues holding lanterns on either side of the entrance look down onto a rink full of enthusiastic skaters. You can hire skates and take a lesson from experts who might well be aspiring to play on Finland’s world-beating ice hockey teams. Hockey sticks are not allowed on the rink, but you’ll pick up some useful tricks while others can admire your skill from the comfort of the café with cups of steaming hot chocolate. The less adventurous can get up close to the icy romance of winter at Korkeasaari Zoo with its annual Art Meets Ice exhibition. Top ice sculptors from different countries produce beautiful pieces in intricate detail. A huge walrus faces you; a prancing horse seems to rear up out of the snow; a transparent carriage awaits Cinderella; and swans seem to dance over the snow. At night their ethereal quality is transformed by lights of pinks and greens, purples and blues. The Finns are practical people who use the famous Nordic winter darkness as a backdrop to a city that sparkles with brightly coloured lights in the trees lining Esplanadi, Helsinki’s most famous shopping street. This is the place

to stock up on Christmas gifts like the small mythical elves called Tonttus, mugs decorated with reindeers, candle holders for tea lights, and red, white and deep green table decorations. During December Christmas markets spring up throughout the city, the stalls selling wooden toys, reindeer slippers and fur-lined hats designed to bring out the Dr Zhivago in you. Don’t miss one last treat before setting off for Lapland. Dress up warmly then take the lift followed by some steep stairs to the 14th floor of the Hotel Torni in central Helsinki for a view over the city laid out below you like a living Christmas card. Magical Delights Lapland means Father Christmas who lives, as everybody knows, at Rovaniemi just above the Arctic Circle. You need to plan a whole long day here as it’s 106 miles from Ylläs and 81 miles from Pyhä. Santa Claus Holiday Village is large, a place where children get caught up in the excitement of seeing the Elf School, the Gingerbread Kitchen, the Post Office and meeting Father Christmas himself. There’s an indoor sleigh ride taking you past animals and scenes from well-known fairy tales; you can walk under the Arctic Circle, have a drink in the frozen Ice Gallery and see how Christmas is celebrated around the

40 YEARS OF HOLIDAYS

world. Every age can quite happily go back to their own childhood; after all Santa Claus is a magical figure. For everyone, the Northern Lights offer more magic. The Aurora Borealis might be the result of high energy electrons colliding with oxygen atoms and nitrogen molecules, but for centuries people believed they were seeing the spirits of the dead, or flaming air coming through cracks in the sky, or the terrifying spectacle of an angry God. As you watch nature’s most audacious show of ever changing lights dancing and swirling around the heavens above, you’ll find it difficult to believe the killjoys and their scientific theories. Wilderness White Adventures come in many forms in Lapland and booking a safari offers you another chance to grapple with winter. Snowmobile, reindeer, or huskies? If you have time you should try them all and both resorts have safari companies who organise expeditions. Don a helmet, weatherproof clothes and gloves and set off on a snowmobile. They’re easy to operate once you’ve mastered the motorcycle-style brakes, the thumboperated throttle and the technique of steering by shifting your weight from side to side. If you prefer an animal safari, follow

the example of the Samis, the indigenous people of Lapland who traditionally used reindeer for their day-to-day transport. Huskies are noisy dogs, straining at the leash to be off over the frozen paths at what seems breakneck speed, particularly if you’re driving them yourself! Once you’ve got over the thrill of sledging fast through the landscape looking out for the odd wild animal startled by your passing, you start to appreciate the silence and the vastness of one of Europe’s last great wilderness areas. The brave, or foolhardy according to your viewpoint, might try a spot of ice swimming. But you must do this with an experienced leader. Fishing through ice is easier and landing a nice fat rainbow trout in such conditions makes one of the best fishing stories you can ever tell. There’s good cross-country and some downhill skiing as well, from both resorts, which are popular with Finns. If all this sounds cold, don’t worry. A Finnish sauna awaits and it’s much hotter than Swedish saunas which the Finns dismiss as ‘warm saunas’. So end your outdoor expeditions with a quick blast of heat followed by a cold drink. As the Finns somewhat smugly claim, they like their houses warm and their beer cold.

t was business that led John Crawford to the pleasures of timeshare. “As an ex-pat working overseas, I used a friend’s Macdonald Resorts Scottish timeshare as my home away from home during a UK stay,” he explained. “I was so impressed with the quality that I purchased two weeks at the Macdonald Plas Talgarth Resort (1846), which overlooks the River Dyfi in Snowdonia, North Wales. Now I live back in the UK, I’m more inclined to bank my weeks and exchange for an overseas holiday to places we have always wanted to visit.” It was 25 years ago that John made that first timeshare purchase and became an RCI member. Today, between them, the Crawford family own eight weeks of timeshare. John has added an extra week ownership at Macdonald Elmers Court (0644) on the edge of the New Forest, and at Macdonald Doña Lola (1689) in Málaga, Spain, to his ownership at Macdonald Plas Talgarth, where he is now the Owners’ Committee Chairman. The love of a timeshare exchange lifestyle runs through this family, as John’s son and his sister own a further four weeks between them.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS:(clockwise from far left) The Rocky Mountaineer Train spans Canada. John with granddaughter Grace. Hawaiian welcome on Big Island. The Horseshoe Falls - as the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls is known. Waikiki Beach, home to TV series Hawaii 5-0. The Halifax Citadel National Historic in Nova Scotia charts the harbour’s history as far back as 1749.

As a former BOAC flight engineer and engineer design consultant, John admits he has seen a good 90 per cent of the world at his employers’ expense! However, at 71 and still working, part time and at his own pace in a consultancy capacity for a German company, his timeshares and RCI membership are paying dividends. John now has to fund his own travels, but has much more time to holiday. John has set about seeing what remains of the world for him to visit using his RCI membership. “We have used RCI Exchange Holidays and Extra Holidays to take us to the Isle of Man, Ireland, France and Spain,” said John. “Longhaul exchanges have been enjoyed to the US mainland, Hawaii, the Canadian mainland, Vancouver Island, New Zealand and South Africa.” Spirit of Adventure Canada is rated highly as a holiday destination by the Crawfords. John was returning for a second time when the family headed off for a Canadian adventure last year, but for the others in the family that travelled with him, it was a holiday first. Halifax, Nova Scotia was

the first stop, where historian John, visited the Titanic graves in Fairview Cemetery and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, home to the flotsam that came from the wreck, along with artefacts from the Halifax ammunition explosion that levelled the harbour area in 1917. Then it was onto the bigger sights. John recounts: “We saw the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side, which I think is the most beautiful view. In Ontario we also stepped back in time during a visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a town which played a part in the 1812 war and is perfectly restored as it was then, a truly amazing experience.” John and his family took a walk on the wild side in Alberta when they stayed in the town of Banff, where they shared the streets with freely wandering moose! It was the moose that brought them to Banff, but they were equally impressed with the Cascade Masonic Lodge, built in 1924 and, according to John: “Though not on the grand scale, it was surprisingly pretty architecture”. A trip to Vancouver on the Rocky Mountaineer Train saw the Crawfords arriving in time for Canada Day on

1 July. “There were parades in the streets, fireworks in the harbour and the party spirit prevailed everywhere you went,” said John. “Like London, Vancouver is a diverse city and so the celebrations took in Scottish dancing, which pleased the Scotsman in me, Irish jigs and Korean traditional dance, while the dusk sky was illuminated by fireworks that stretched out along the waterfront on pontoons. It was the best of holidays.” Other memorable RCI holiday moments for the Crawford family, include a two-week stay on Hawaii’s Big Island, where John climbed volcanoes and undertook lots of walking trips, topped by a trip to Honolulu with a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial, as well as following in the sandy footsteps of the cast of TV series, Hawaii 5-0, on Waikiki Beach where it was filmed. Concluding with his holiday tips, our timeshare traveller John said: “Don’t waste your holiday looking for things to complain about. You may never return to that place again, so enjoy the people, the sights, the food, the local culture, be adventurous, hire a car and tour. Simply get everything you can from each minute of your stay.”

TAKE FOUR MALTESE MOMENTS With a rich history, friendly people and stunning landscapes (Malta has featured as a backdrop for many movies including Gladiator), make room on your Malta holiday planning list for at least one of these attractions.

Marsaxlokk Fish Market Marsaxlokk

Sweethaven Popeye Village Anchor Bay, Mellieha

San Anton Gardens Attard

For a slice of local living, visit this market and buy some of the freshest fish and seafood – often caught the very same day – and cheaper than you will find in the shops. The market has become so popular, that it now sells other local produce, including jams, wines and vegetables. Open Sundays until 12.30. Why we love it: Marsaxlokk is the perfect place to view those iconic colourful boats (luzzus) bobbing on the water and it is the ideal time to try something new and sample some local delicacies… Don’t forget your dolphin fish for our recipe on the opposite page!

The 1980s movie Popeye was filmed in Malta, and the film set has grown into one of the most popular attractions on the island. Visitors are greeted by Popeye and friends, and families will love being part of the filming experience. Mini golf, boat rides, water trampoline and fun park all await children for a day of fun-filled action. Why we love it: It’s a fun day out for all the family, plus it is convenient to get there – Popeye Village run bus pick-ups from all hotels on the island for just €6.50 per adult and €5.50 per child.

One of the most well-known gardens on the island, San Anton is something of a real beauty. Wander past jacaranda trees, Norfolk pines and bougainvillea, fountains and ponds, pausing to enjoy the cool of the shade and the sweet scents of the botanical delights from the flower beds. The Palace within the gardens has been a residence for many political figures in the past, and it is now home to the Maltese President. Why we love it: It’s an easy way to spark some ideas for your garden back home, be sure to take pictures!

Visit Popeyemalta.com for more details and transport times.
