eaches on these sunny isles range from wide sparkling strands with lively beach life, to quiet coves of dark volcanic sand. There will be a beach to suit everyone on these islands. Tenerife Many of Tenerife’s best beaches lie along its south coast on the Costa Adeje. Fañabé has every service you could wish for, from sunbeds to lifeguards. Calm waters lap the golden sands, backed by a promenade with cafés and restaurants for seaside dining. Nearby El Duque has a quiet, chic appeal and a stylish promenade. The Troya Beaches, also known as Playa de las Américas, are the island’s party capital. Come here for the nightlife and an energetic beach

scene with ball games and water sports. Another favourite is Los Cristianos, a fishing village turned busy port. The sea is calm and shallow along this golden strand, lined with beach shacks selling refreshments. There’s also an extensive promenade with a tempting selection of shops and restaurants. All of these beaches can be reached by bus. If you prefer a peaceful beach experience, Tenerife has lots of seaside spots away from the crowds. Playa de las Galgas, nearly 10 kilometres north of La Caleta, is a secluded white-sand beach. Set in a natural bay and accessible by a pathway, this hidden gem is visited mainly by locals and known only to very few tourists. Its tranquil atmosphere is perfect for those seeking serenity, and it’s only an hour’s drive north to Tenerife’s capital,

Santa Cruz. Just a six km drive brings you to Playa de las Teresitas, one of the island’s most celebrated beaches, where fine golden sand curves around a palmlined bay. It’s sheltered by an artificial reef which keeps the water shallow and calm, making it a great snorkelling spot. The beach has a local vibe, as it’s away from the resorts. There are snack bars, showers, toilets and parking, plus excellent seafood restaurants in the adjoining fishing village of San Andrés. Want more privacy? An amazing blacksand beach can be found at El Bollullo on the north coast, a 20-minute drive from Puerto de la Cruz. A pathway leads down to a natural cove, surrounded by volcanic cliffs and green vegetation contrasting with the dark sands. This is a rugged beach with strong waves, so bathe with care. It’s more about enjoying the unspoiled setting. The few facilities here include a great snack bar that serves fresh seafood.
If you want the sea without the sand, Costa Martiánez at Puerto de la Cruz is perfect. An hour away from La Caleta, Costa Martiánez is a large, open-air swimming lido overlooking the sea. Designed by the Canarian artist César Manrique, it is part modern art museum. Striking sculptures surround a series of landscaped seawater pools and an artificial lake, Lago Martiánez, with a fountain and other water features. There’s a small entrance fee, and plenty of facilities, from sun loungers and changing rooms to bars and restaurants. Manrique also designed nearby Playa Jardín, which comprises three urban, black-sand beaches. Reached via lush gardens, there are areas for surfing and a calm stretch protected by a breakwater. Facilities include a bandstand and a promenade, complete with a choice of bars and restaurants.

Gran Canaria Peaceful doesn’t have to mean secluded. Amadores Beach is encircled by two breakwaters which keep the waters calm. Ball games and water sports are banned here too, so you can paddle happily for hours, splash free. Everything from sun loungers to shops and refreshments are right to hand, while amphibious chairs and other facilities make this an ideal beach for travellers with disabilities. Behind the white sands, a seafront promenade links this popular southwest beach to the neighbouring resort of Puerto Rico. It too has a fine beach, plus a yacht marina and sailing school which makes great viewing. Anfi del Mar is another nearby beach with fine sand and turquoise waters. A 20-minute drive brings you to the rippling dunes of Maspalomas on the southern
tip of the island. The golden beach here stretches for more than three km, and is the second-longest on the island. Maspalomas Lighthouse at the western end is an ideal spot to view the sunset. Towards the centre of the beach, the dunes get bigger and, if you’re a dune walker, be aware that you may come across naked sunbathers, as there are naturist areas in the dunes. Further east, the beach is family friendly as it nears the busy resort of Playa del Inglés . This is another grand sweeping strand, backed by a promenade with snack bars, restaurants, shops, toilets and showers. With jet-ski rentals, beach volleyball and the like, it’s livelier here. A few kilometres beyond, St Agustín Beach has the same golden sand but fewer people to share it with. It’s peaceful, with just a few shops and restaurants. to Maspalomas begins here. A 10-minute drive west from Amadores brings you to Puerto de Mogán . The backdrop to this beach is a pretty fishing village. At times there are almost as many sand castles as sun loungers here, as the calm waters make it a favourite with families. Colourful fishing boats bob in the marina, which is ringed by waterside bistros and seafood restaurants. There’s also a promenade. For an urban buzz, head for the capital, Las Palmas. Las Canteras Beach on its northern shore is the island’s longest stretch of sand. A volcanic reef called ‘la barra’ breaks the waves and keeps the water calm, making it a great place for bathing. The beach is famous for the life-size sand sculptures below the promenade, which is packed with lively bars, restaurants and shops. After dark, the lights reflecting on the water across the golden sands is one of the loveliest

sights on the island. Las Canteras is about an hour’s drive from the south-western resorts. If you don’t feel like driving, you can take the Gran Canaria buses that connect the main towns around the island (globalsu.net). Lanzarote As its name suggests, Playa Grande is Lanzarote’s biggest beach at almost a mile long and part of its most popular resort, Puerto del Carmen. This palm-fringed urban beach has everything you could want: calm water, sunbeds, lifeguards, parking and a host of restaurants and shops along its promenade. There are actually several beaches along this southeastern coastal stretch, connected by Avenida de las Playas, which also has a bike lane. Good picks include El Barranquillo, a small, quiet beach with golden sand and volcanic rocks; Los Pocillos, a busy
beach where team sports provide great spectator entertainment; and Matagorda, a quiet and breezy beach with a bustling promenade. To escape the crowds, take a 15-minute drive south to Playa Quemada, beside an old fishing village. Its name means ‘burnt beach’, and it’s one of the few black-sand beaches on the island. Despite its sheltered bay and good swimming, it’s practically deserted thanks to its rougher, rockstrewn surface. It’s great for sunbathing and beachcombing, and you have a choice of three fish restaurants. Lanzarote’s other volcanic beach lies 25 minutes away on the south-west coast at El Golfo. Here, a natural cove of black sand is bordered by a bright green, algae-covered lagoon called the Charco de Los Clicos. Together with the red rocks of the crater, the contrast is one of the most spectacular sights

on the island. In the village, dine at fish restaurants while looking out to sea. A truly beautiful beach is Famara, a half-hour’s drive across the island on the north-west coast. The golden beach here is six km long and backed by high, rugged pink cliffs. When the tide is low, and the reflection of the cliffs shimmers in the watery sand, it’s like a painting come to life. Due to strong currents and high winds, this isn’t a swimming beach. But it’s a stunning place for beach walks and for watching the expert surfers and kite surfers riding the waves. In nearby Caleta de Famara you will find shops and fish restaurants. If simple sea, sun and sand is what you’re looking for on your next escape, take a look at the Canary Islands where the beaches are many and varied in the experiences they have to offer.

hen the peak season tourists have gone home, Spanish streets come alive with local festivities, while Dominican Republic beaches are bathed in golden sunshine. These are two breaks that can be enjoyed anytime of the year.

Catalan Charms There is something special about Spain in winter. The crowds that came for the sizzling sun-drenched Spanish coast have packed and gone. A gentle hush falls across popular coastal resorts and cities, and a new way of life emerges. Many Spanish traditions flourish during the milder months in a different way to the summer. Strolling around these ancient streets you will enjoy the vibrant Catalonian culture, reflected in its modern art and time-worn architecture. Wander Tarragona Old Town, where echoes of the city’s Roman past lead you along medieval walls, under towering columns and through pretty squares. Visit well-known attractions, such as the Roman amphitheatre, vaults and circus, and the cathedral. Allow time to explore little-known treasures too. Carrer del Comte, also known as Pilons Street, is full of brightly painted posts (pilons), while nearby Plaça dels Sedassos is an artistic illusion taking you back to 19th century Tarragona. In winter months, look out for locals forming a circle to dance the Sardana – a Catalan tradition, or visit the food festival known as the Calçotada, which involves vast amounts of red pepper sauce, fire-blackened onions and refreshments in pitchers known as porron. Winter in Málaga is equally wonderful. The Costa del Sol is sunny throughout the winter months. As a working city, Málaga comes alive at this time, with many saying it’s at its toe-tapping best in winter. Catch a flamenco show to see skirts swirl and guitar strings vibrate during this traditional folk feast for the eyes and ears. The cultural centre of Kelipé is one of many great venues to see dancing. Don’t miss the cathedral, spend time sauntering under the leafy canopy of Málaga Park, take a barefoot walk on the beach, or view the masterpieces at the magnificent Centre Pompidou. See some art The casino hotels on the Strip have invested in important public art. Treat yourself to a self-guided gallery tour of the Crystals, a Daniel Libeskinddesigned space at CityCenter where you can see the pieces by Claes Oldenburg, Jenny Holzer and Henry Moore, to name just a few. But one of Crystal’s best secrets may be Akhob, an unmarked permanent installation in Louis Vuitton Maison by light artist James Turrell. Visitors sit in a lightfilled room that is one of the most meditative sanctuaries on the Strip. Reserve in advance for a free visit. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’ P3 Studio is a residence space that has hosted Fab 5 Freddy and Shelter Serra. Artists live and work free here, and guests are often invited to talk with them. One of the most unexpected fine-art collections is in the Frank Gehry-designed Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Behind its silver façade you’ll find LA artist Peter Alexander’s massive glass-shards pyramid sculpture, Sugar. Inside the hospital itself, a contemporary gallery featuring

works by Ken Price, among others, sells pieces to benefit both artist and hospital. Live by the pool Lying by the pool is hardly lounging these days, with the many poolside activities. The Bamboo Pool at the Cosmopolitan springs to life at twilight, when ‘dive-in’ movies play on the 19-metre marquee, or concerts are held as part of the Set Your Life to Music series. At Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, the adults-only Encore Beach Club is high-end glamour, though the crowd that flocks to the pool depends on the event. Pay for one of the 26 cabanas, outfitted with flat-screen TVs and refrigerators, to be private. Parties like
Recess Fridays and Daystar Sundays can get a little loud. On the eighth floor of the Mandarin Oriental, anyone can gain entry to the spa-like pool scene for the price of a cabana rental (price varies but includes mini smoothies, frozen fruit and a flat screen TV). Go Old School The Mob Museum will take you back in time to the days of the city’s organised crime lords. Among its showpieces is a piece of the bullet-ridden wall from the St Valentine’s Day Massacre. Fans of the atomic age won’t want to miss the National Atomic Testing Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate that brings to life the goings-on at the Nevada Test Site 104 kilometres out of town. a theatre presentation that simulates what it was like to watch an atomic explosion, complete with shaking seats. Eat Up One of the hottest restaurant openings has been DB Brasserie, Daniel Boulud’s re-entry into Vegas. In the Venetian, the revamped space serves upscale comfort food, like rainbow trout, with roasted cauliflower, pommes dauphine and brown butter sauce. For a taste of home, try Flame Kabob, a family-owned Middle Eastern restaurant where everything is cooked from scratch using traditional aromatic spices and herbs. Topping the menu are skewers of chicken, beef or lamb kubidehs served with onions and grilled

tomatoes, accompanied by spicy sides such as saffron rice and baba ghanoush - smoked eggplants in tahini spices, and taftoon bread made to order. There are many Chinese restaurants in Vegas’ Chinatown, and a few more on the Strip. China House at Palms, the authentic Szechuan from Chicago’s ‘Mayor of Chinatown’, while Tony Hu bridges the two with tea-smoked duck served in a beautiful room. If you like the insider track on dining, head for the 60-seat Carson Kitchen by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Chef, Kerry Simon. Celebs and rock royalty flock here for crispy fried chicken skins with smoked honey (nothing is more than $20). You may have to wait for a seat, but you’ll be happy you did.

جران كناريا السكينة ال تعني بالضرورة العزلة .يحيط بشاطئ حاجزان لألمواج لتبقى المياه هادئة .كما أمادوريس يمنع اللعب بالكرة أو ممارسة الرياضات المائية ،ومن ثم يمكنك التجديف بسعادة لساعات ،دون أن تتعرض ألي رشة ماء .كل ما تريده من كراسي الشمس والمتاجر والمرطبات بين يديك ،بينما تجعل الكراسي العائمة وغيرها من المرافق منه شاط ًئا مثاليًا للمسافرين من ذوي االحتياجات الخاصة .خلف الرمال البيضاء ،يربط ممشى مواجه للبحر هذا الشاطئ الشهير الذي يقع جنوب غرب منتجع بورتو ريكو المجاور .الذي يضم أيضًا شاط ًئا جميالً ،باإلضافة إلى مركب في المارينا ومدرسة لإلبحار مما يوفر مناظر خالبة. يقع شاطئ أنفي ديل مار قريبًا ،وهو يتميز بالرمال الرائعة والمياه الفيروزية .إذا قمت بقيادة السيارة لمدة 20دقيقة ،فسوف تصل إلى الكثبان الرملية في ماسبالوماس في الجزء الجنوبي من الجزيرة .حيث يمتد الشاطئ الذهبي لثالثة كيلومترات تقريبًا ،وهو ثاني أطول شاطئ في الجزيرة .وتعد منارة ماسبالوماس ً مميزا لرؤية الغروب. الواقعة في الطرف الجنوبي موقعًا
