A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES TO TREASURE FOREVER
With RCI we’ve visited places we may not have been able to afford, and had the peace of mind of knowing the accommodation will be of good quality. Our most memorable exchange holiday was at Orange Lake Country Club in Florida. Very impressed and happy. – MRS JANET GRAHAM, LEICESTER, ENGLAND. RCI MEMBER SINCE 1991

Discovering wonderful new places and unique cultures around the world is the joy of using your timeshare with the RCI exchange holiday programme. Many of our members tell us that RCI has opened up a world of adventure for them and their children, and we are thrilled to hear that the services we provide for you can make such a big difference to your lives. But we also learn from your feedback that even the most adventurous of you will always return to the sun, sea and sand holiday, between the more exotic trips, to kick back and recharge your batteries. Which is why, on page 20, we give you a fantastic beach for each of our forty years of sending our member families away on holiday — so that’s forty fabulous beach destinations to inspire your next ‘get away from it all’ break. This article is a favourite of your Publications team, as the incredible variety of shoreline experiences and activities you can enjoy around the world surprised us all! In this issue we discover that there is also a lot more to many of our popular beach destinations than stretches of golden sand. In our feature on Goa on page 32, for example, beyond its beautiful beaches there are extraordinary nature sanctuaries and heady spice plantations to be explored. On the Greek islands of Crete and Skiáthos you can, quite literally, get a taste of local life with a mix of tantalising traditional Greek dishes made from ingredients grown on the islands, with a rich side order of history and festivals — see page 38 to whet your appetite… Italy is as much loved for the street theatre of its romantic piazzas as its expansive coastline and on page 48 we take you through seven special piazzas you have probably never heard of. Check out page 44 and prepare to be surprised to find there is a family-fun side to our favourite ‘sin city’ — Las Vegas. While in Mexico, Palace Resorts is paying guests to enjoy all its resorts have to offer in the way of holiday activities with the Resort Credit programme, which could give you up to $3,000 to spend on resort and on tour excursions organised by your resort. Don’t miss out — see the full story on page 56. Join us in our anniversary celebrations by enjoying this 40th anniversary issue of your Endless Vacation magazine. We have packed a lot of ideas into these pages to help you plan a much-deserved wonderful holiday. If you are inspired and go off on a great holiday adventure after reading the magazine, we’d love to hear about it, so please email me or drop me a line at the address you’ll find on page 7. Most importantly, have fun and the best of times on your holiday, wherever in the world you are.

YEARS OF HOLIDAYS
Welcome... To our bumper 40th Anniversary edition of your RCI magazine. RCI sent its first family on an exchange holiday in 1974, and it’s thanks to the loyalty of our worldwide family of RCI members that we are celebrating a landmark birthday today. To thank you we are giving you the birthday presents in our RCI Big 40 Prize Draw! Don’t miss out — see page 8 for details of how to enter and the 40 fabulous prizes to be won, including a number of great holiday getaways. We also bring you a great new look RCI.com, packed with bright holiday images and special RCI offers for our European members. An enhanced user-friendly navigation makes getting around the site faster and more fun, while destination pages highlight the many places you love to visit. As you plan your holidays, are you sure that you’re making the most of your RCI membership? We have noticed that some
members are letting their points expire. The last thing we want is for you to waste any points values so we have personalised your RCI Account Statement to alert you when an expiry date is drawing near. To learn how you can go further on holiday using your RCI membership, see page 2 and visit our section celebrating 40 fantastic years on page 61 for more inspiring ideas, as well as some interesting facts about RCI and our members. So all you have to do now is choose where in the world you want to go. My wife is from Finland which means that beautiful country has become a firm family favourite and is already on our 2014 holiday calendar. Many things have changed since we sent our first member families on holiday in 1974. However, the one constant is our total commitment to you and that will never change.

Letters from our readers
Will, Rachel, Ann and Ken in Sedona
Peace and Seclusion Every day gives a different landscape on a relaxing, but active canal boat holiday. We had a wonderful trip around the Avon Ring, boarding at Worcester. We enjoyed the seclusion and peace of the beautiful scenery and wildlife, meeting friendly and helpful fellow travellers, including RCI members, along the way. - Tony Dane, Scotland. RCI Member for 13 years.
CELEBRATING THE BIG 40:
40 Exchanges and counting…
Since joining RCI we have never looked back, travelling to places we never dreamed of visiting and we have always been satisfied with the high standard of resorts. We have been to Málaga many times, and Sunset Beach Club (1469) is closest to my heart — the excellent location, brilliant service, beautiful apartments and friendly staff. Thank you RCI for providing us with lots of lovely memories and unforgettable holidays! - Mrs. Hidvegine Toth Erzsebet, Hungary. RCI Member for 20 years.
An Arizona Milestone My brother Ken and his wife Ann joined me, and my friend Will, on our holiday to Arizona, for Will’s 65th birthday. Our verandah overlooked a stream, and it had a hot tub too which was a godsend after horseback treks, fishing and visits to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and Sedona. It was a holiday experience of a lifetime for all of us and we hope to have more experiences like this one! - Rachel Erskine, Scotland. RCI Member for 22 years.

Forty years of friendship Now a world leader in exchange holiday servicing, RCI has come a long way from its founder’s kitchen table 40 years ago. Though we haven’t grown so very far from our roots… RCI founder Christel DeHaan, pictured centre, is still part of the RCI family and recently popped into our US HQ, meeting our very own Kate Karagholi, left, and Jo Hobbs, from the European marketing team. Christel’s charity, the Christel House Foundation, is RCI’s charity of choice and helps disadvantaged children by giving them an education and the chance to contribute to their communities. Christel said: “Each day over 4,000 Christel House students are overcoming the barriers of poverty. We have some Christel House graduates who are now working at RCI India. I am deeply grateful to RCI and the industry for embracing our children with such generosity.” To find out more visit christelhouse.org

Happy anniversary
to ALL of us!

Many of our sister companies in the Wyndham Exchange & Rentals group celebrate landmark anniversaries this year, with James Villa Holidays and Chez Nous reaching their 30th birthday, Canvas Holidays turning 50, Landal GreenParks hitting 60 and, the daddy of them all, Hoseasons, raises a glass to a fantastic 70 years in business. Being around for so long must mean we’ve been doing something right. Sean Lowe, Managing Director, RCI Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, said: “Our 40th birthday is a great source of pride to everyone at RCI. It’s a fantastic achievement for our companies to have become established and trusted brands, supported by so many loyal and
valued customers. Our staff are more dedicated than ever to ensuring our customers receive the best possible service and holidays from all our brand companies. “On behalf of RCI’s European team, I’d like to thank our members and resort developers. We never forget that without you behind us, we wouldn’t be here today celebrating four decades in business.”
RCI CONGRATULATES… The leading European consumer association reaches a key milestone this year. TATOC, the timeshare association representing timeshare owners and committees, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, having grown into a powerful organisation being recognised as the ‘voice’ of timeshare owners. Harry Taylor, TATOC’s Chief Executive, said: “We’re proud to be celebrating our 25th anniversary and, as ever, we are looking to
the future. We will continue to safeguard the quality of the timeshare ownership experience and the future of the industry.”
We have welcomed RCI members from all countries for 25 years, making Château Country Club de Trédion one of RCI’s oldest affiliated resorts in France... RCI members enjoy fine traditional French holidays. – G U Y T U R P I N , D E V E LO P E R C H ÂT E AU C O U N T RY C LU B D E T R É D I O N
That future is in good hands judging by the number of developers and resorts that have earned a good reputation after tens of years of providing fabulous holidays. This year sees a number of leading lights among our resort developer community reaching milestone birthdays. UK-based developer, Heritage Resorts, celebrates a grand 30 years of providing great timeshare holidays this year. Heritage Resorts James Villa Holidays, celebrating 30 years of sending people on luxurious villa breaks.
Happy anniversary! Because many resorts have been signed up to the RCI exchange network since their earliest days, a number of them are marking key anniversaries this year from when they first joined our exchange network. Here is just a selection:
20 YEARS WITH RCI Arabesque, Tunisia (3715) Cela Canet Malibu Premier, France (3731)

has four resorts in the RCI exchange holiday network — all on the gloriously sunny Costa del Sol. Leading Italian hotel group, Domina Vacanze, raises a glass to toast its 25th anniversary. This resort developer company is still run by the Domina family and in its long association with RCI it has put ten of its resorts into the RCI exchange network — nine of them to be found in some of Italy’s most soughtafter holiday locations, and one in the ever popular Sharm el Sheikh resort in Egypt on the shores of the Red Sea. This year will see Domina Vacanze working closely with RCI to offer more to RCI members — so watch this space! Sean Lowe said: “RCI congratulates these developers on their prestigious
anniversaries. Both Heritage and Domina are trusted for their service excellence, quality and choice — all of which we put at the heart of all we do as well. We are proud of our long association with both Heritage and Domina which has brought our members high-quality holiday options.” Long-term relationships with developers and resorts, as well as close ties with our sister companies, enables RCI to acquire extra accommodation of different types in some popular destinations, helping us give our members an even greater variety of resorts to choose from. Add that to the nearly 4,500 resorts in the RCI exchange holiday network today and there is much to celebrate in our 40th anniversary year!

We would like to thank you RCI because we have had the chance to travel to places where we were welcomed with high quality and great assistance. Our best, and most unforgettable holiday was our 25th wedding anniversary — we travelled to Las Vegas which was amazing and RCI gave us the chance to celebrate overseas. I hope we will be travelling for many more years with RCI...
Thanks to RCI we have made some holiday exchanges to the most beautiful resorts. Our favourite destination is Florida, we’ve been there seven times with the whole family. RCI has brought us flexibility over the years. Our holiday to Tenerife in 1992 was the most memorable, the staff were all wonderfully helpful, with a really high standard of service. And the terrace was truly amazing, it was huge with wonderful views.
Our most memorable holiday was in Crete in 1998 when we visited a beautiful resort in traditional Cretan style, The Village Holiday Club (3231). What made it unforgettable? The combination of the good service, nice environment and the great company of our friend.

N E W LO O K F O R B A H Í A B L A N C A Sitting on the cliffs of the south coast of Gran Canaria, Bahía Blanca (1989) is just a ten-minute walk from the lively marina of Puerto Rico with its numerous bars and beautiful beach. And it isn’t just the fabulous location of this resort that makes it popular with RCI members. The developer company has invested €4.5 million into the refurbishment of the resort’s 108 apartments, which all overlook the ocean. By the close of this year 84 units will have been refurbished and the work is set to complete by the end of 2016. The transformation of Bahía Blanca’s accommodation features modern furnishings and light décor, set off by the use of contrasting

FAVOURITE BEACHES
FAVOURITE BEACHES During RCI’s 40th Anniversary year we are celebrating the enduring appeal – and diversity – of the fabulous sun, sea and sand holiday. Despite all the different experiences to be enjoyed, beach holidays remain a firm favourite, though no two beaches are the same. Discover your favourite stretch of coastline from our forty fabulous beaches and get packing!
Dona Ana Beach Lagos, Portugal
Europe 1. Blackpool Sands Devon, England Enjoy a slice of the Med at Blackpool Sands in Devon — a sheltered bay backed by majestic pines and evergreens. Take to the water for a paddle or by kayak before visiting the seaside gardens to escape the sun and enjoy spectacular views of the bay. 2. Inch Strand Dingle Peninsula, Ireland If it’s epic beauty you seek, visit this three-mile-long stretch of golden sand and dunes in the southern foothills of the Slieve Mish mountains, where the 1970’s classic Ryan’s Daughter — starring Robert Mitchum — was filmed. A certified Blue Flag beach, it’s popular for angling, surfing, windsurfing and sunbathing.
3
3. Dona Ana Beach Lagos, Portugal Of all the magnificent beaches that define the Algarve coast, in southern Portugal, the scenic coves in Lagos may be the most beautiful, thanks to their dramatic limestone cliffs and clear turquoise waters. Dona Ana in particular has striking archways and offshore rock islands, as well as a small crescent of white sand.
4. Falesia Beach Albufeira, Portugal With a spectacular cliff backdrop in beautiful hues of red, copper and gold, visit Albufeira’s Falesia Beach in the late afternoon as the sun sets for the best show of colour. With calm seas, this section of coast is perfect for paddling and watching the windsurfers take to the water — great entertainment while soaking up the rays. 5. Cabopino Calahonda, Malaga Less developed than many parts of the Costa del Sol, Cabopino has a refreshingly authentic atmosphere. The sandy beaches on either side of the low-key harbour, a hub for sailors and waterskiers, are long enough to accommodate family, gay, naturist and kitesurfing groups. To the west, there’s a swathe of quiet, protected dunes. 6. Elviria Marbella, Malaga In a leafy, low-rise zone, the beach scene at Elviria is wonderfully relaxed. These sands are perfect for a gentle stroll, enjoying the sun and the distant views of crumpled mountains. With a good sprinkling of chiringuitos (beach bars), you’ll have plenty of chances to pause for a cool beer or a lazy lunch.
1
7. Platja Llarga Tarragona, Spain Tarragona is dotted with beaches, known for fine, golden sands, alluring coves and clear waters. Platja Llarga (Long Beach) is perfect for enjoying a lengthy beach walk, and for families, with its calm waters and restaurants nearby to grab some refreshments. Combine a visit to the beach with some culture and history, and you have the perfect combination for a city break. 8. Playa Grande Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen is home to Lanzarote’s most iconic beach, with colourful parasols and a lively family atmosphere. In summer it’s perfect for swimming, with safe, clear waters. The Lanzarote Ironman swimming events are held here, so it’s a favourite place for superfit triathletes to train.

9. Playa Dorada Playa Blanca, Lanzarote With soft sand and sheltered, shallow waters, this small but pretty beach is an ideal place for toddlers and young children to play. It’s right in the middle of Lanzarote’s most family-friendly resort — just off the attractively landscaped promenade — with play areas, al fresco restaurants and ice cream shops close at hand. 10. Flag Beach Corralejo, Fuerteventura As you relax on the sands south of Corralejo, you’ll see windsurfers scudding along at daredevil speeds: brisk winds make this an exciting spot to take to the waves. For escapists, the creamy white, tufted dunes fringing the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo offer peace, seclusion and fine views of Lanzarote and Lobos.
11. Cala Bassa Ibiza A short bus or boat ride southwest of Sant Antoni de Portmany (San An, to those in the know) is a pretty curve of soft, pale sand, sheltered by fragrant evergreen trees. In high season, when families pack out every square inch, your little urchins will have no trouble making friends.
13. Garachico Rock Pools Garachico, Tenerife Tenerife has a beach for everyone, but for something different, visit Garachico’s natural rock pools — popular with local families at weekends. Pick a spot to sunbathe and wonder at those brave enough to dive into the pools, or watch local fisherman catching buckets of crabs.
12. Puerto Colón Tenerife Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins seem to love southwest Tenerife — over 750 wild cetaceans have made its waters their permanent home. If you’re lucky, you may catch a glimpse of a pod while you’re relaxing on the beach at Puerto Colón, near Costa Adeje. Responsibly run boat trips offer a closer look.
14. Playa de Maspalomas Gran Canaria The wild expanse of curvaceous dunes behind Playa de Maspalomas gives this golden beach an exotic, North African atmosphere. Constantly remodelled by the wind, the dunes can be searingly hot underfoot but are fun to explore, staggering up the ridges and running — or rolling! — down the slopes.

17. Lake Zell-Am-Zee Salzburg, Austria Take a dip in the middle of the Alps in Lake Zell — to say this is a unique experience is an understatement. With water activities to entertain — the fun doesn’t end when the sun goes down. Don’t miss the Magic Lake Show on Thursdays and Sundays (June to October 2014), with a spectacular display of water, light, music and lasers.
15. Golden Sands Malta It’s all in the name! Golden Sands is set in a secluded cove on the northwest coast of Malta, one of the best stretches of sand on the island. With a bus service to and from the beach, sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, snack bars, kiosks and water sports — what more could a sun worshipper ask for?
18. Lake Balaton Hungary Nicknamed ‘the Hungarian sea’, Lake Balaton is over 49 miles long and lies just an hour from Budapest. What can you expect from a Balaton beach? All will have places to sunbathe and paddle, together with watercraft for hire and snack shacks. Active types can cycle around the lake, while those who want to explore with less effort can enjoy sightseeing cruises.
16. Red Beach Santorini, Greece Don’t expect long white-sand beaches when travelling to Santorini. Hidden inlets, many with red- or charcoal-hued sands, are much more common here. Visitors to this island rarely skip Red Beach, which gets its name from its volcanic rock sands. Don’t feel the need to bring too much: umbrellas, chairs and paddleboards are available for rent.
19. Dilek Peninsula National Park Kusadasi, Turkey Imagine calm azure waters lapping onto golden sands with lush forest trees clinging to the coastline and you are probably envisaging the beaches of Dilek Peninsula National Park. Cool off in the natural waters of Zeus Cave and look out for wild boar, horses and bird species on the south shores. Nature discovered.

20. Ispoinen Beach Turku, Finland Ispoinen Beach has everything. Just ten minutes from Turku by bus, you’re at the start of the glorious Åland archipelago of islands that sparkle in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. Children paddle in the sea, families hire kayaks and, if you’re cold, you can even take a steamy sauna. 21. Viikinsaari Tampere, Finland Take the 20-minute boat trip from Tampere to the pretty marina then make for this small, popular sandy beach where you can picnic and swim. Partly nature reserve, partly Tampere’s summer playground, Viikinsaari Island makes a good half-day trip before heading for the nearby Angry Birds Park.
Contributors to our Fabulous Forty Beaches are: Lynn Cook, Mary Anne Evans, Rona Gindin, Emma Gregg, Lorraine Karabin, Shana Liebman, Maribeth Mellin, Clark Mitchell and Adrian Phillips.
Africa 22. Hammamet Sud Tunisia Here, the broad sands gaze across the shimmering Gulf of Hammamet to a 12th century kasbah, perched on the shore like a giant sandcastle. Palms and parasols offer some shade, but if you’re keen to escape the midday sun, you could head into the Medina to barter for spices, bangles or leather bags. 23. Tiwi Beach Kenya Close though it is to Mombasa, Tiwi Beach feels quiet and unspoilt. It’s deliciously tropical, with white sand shaded by palms, and a coral reef

close to shore. At high tide, just pull on a mask, snorkel and fins and within minutes you’ll be swimming among shimmering fish. 24. South Beach Durban, South Africa South Beach is popular for swimming and sunbathing, but its biggest draw is the 16-hectare Ushaka Marine World. The largest marine park in South Africa, Ushaka has an aquarium with dolphins, seals and penguins, a water park, and a beach area teeming with activities, such as jet skiing, paddleboarding, kiteboarding and beach rugby (ushakamarineworld.co.za).
25. Hurghada Resort Beaches Hurghada, Egypt Hurghada has made a big effort to upgrade its public beaches, but the resort beaches, where entry fees may apply, still outshine them. With bars, sun loungers and well-groomed sand, they’re just right for chilling out after a morning boat trip to one of the many fabulous Red Sea dive sites nearby.
Asia Pacific 26. Baga Beach Goa, India Part of the long section of sand that makes up the Goan beachfront, Baga offers much more than just umbrellas and shelling. Water sports are huge here — you’ll find everything from parasailing to wakeboarding — and when the sun goes down, the party really gets going. 27. Uluwatu Beach Bali, Indonesia Located at the end of a long walking path, Uluwatu is one of the world’s most famous surfing destinations, and no wonder: its waves usually deliver seriously challenging barrels. The waters
are flooded with boarding regulars on weekends, so it’s a great peoplewatching spot, too. 28. Byron Bay New South Wales, Australia One of the things that Australia has in spades is beaches, and the sparkling sands at the country’s most easterly point are among its most enviable. Surfers, families and global nomads strumming guitars all converge on Byron Bay’s Main Beach to dip into the frothy blue water 28 and stretch their legs with long, quiet walks.

USA 31. Turner Beach Sanibel, Florida The best place for watching a Sanibel sunset is Turner Beach. It’s a small beach with twenty parking spots so get there early and you won’t have much company as the golden sun goes down beyond the white sands and darkening blue water. This view alone is worth the trip.
30. Canaveral National Seashore Florida Canaveral National Seashore is ideal for quiet beach time. Drive down a well-paved road toward Playalinda Beach, stopping along the way to see the birds and even the Kennedy Space Center (from a distance). In season, you may spot turtle nests on land and right whales, stingrays or dolphins in the water.
32. Dubois Park West Palm Beach, Florida Twenty years ago, you would have found nothing but sand dunes covered in sea grapes and Australian pines, but this area has been developed into a perfect spot. Stop by Dubois Park, to enjoy more than 366 metres of tropical palm-lined beach, as well as playgrounds and picnic pavilions. This park is a relaxing favourite.

33. Anini Beach Kauai, Hawaii Anini Beach on Kauai’s north shore is favoured by those who like to use a mask and snorkel to meet the underwater locals. If Kauai looks oddly familiar, that’s because over 50 feature films, including South Pacific and Jurassic Park, have been shot here. Take in a movie tour before hitting the beach in the afternoon. 34. Ocean Beach San Diego Ocean Beach is a funky beach town with a wave-beaten wooden pier and anglers who crowd the railings. After a stroll, stop by the Ocean Beach Pier Café for mango pancakes and great views of the daily regatta of yachts, catamarans and fishing boats. Turning back towards the shore, you’ll see the aptly-named Sunset Cliffs stretching south.

35. Playa Limon Dominican Republic Picture water the colour of blue curaçao liqueur and plenty of sugary sand. Playa Limon is just north of Punta Cana, and this two-mile-stretch of beach is never crowded. Kick back with a cool drink and relax in the shade of the coconut trees that lean toward the ocean. 36. Punta Cana Dominican Republic Punta Cana has no shortage of beautiful beaches, with over 24 miles of coconut palms dotting the shoreline and soft, powder-white sand awaiting you. Pick a spot to relax and dive into a good book or the aquamarine waters. 37. Seven Mile Beach Negril, Jamaica The rum punches and Red Stripe beer start flowing early in the day within the palm-thatch huts strung along Seven Mile Beach. Resorts line the shore of Negril, Jamaica’s ‘Capital of Casual’, but the beach itself is long enough (although not quite seven miles!) that you can usually locate a serene spot to swim in. A sandbar close to shore keeps the tide fairly shallow and the water as colourful as a child’s imagination.
38. Rum Point Grand Cayman Set aside a day to experience this island’s best road trip: an hour-long jaunt from Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach to the palm-shaded crescent of sand at Rum Point. The water is usually shallow enough to wade well out toward the horizon, but you’ll find yourself returning to shore frequently for the frozen Mud Slides — a cocktail of Bailey’s and vodka, said to have been invented here and perhaps best enjoyed while swaying in one of the plentiful hammocks. 39. Playa Las Animas Puerto Vallarta, Mexico You can hike to this secluded beach south of Puerto Vallarta, but it’s much easier to reach by boat or water taxi. Once you’re there, walk along this stretch of Pacific coastline — sands give way to smooth stones and plenty of palm trees. It’s a popular playground for local families at weekends, and much quieter during the week.
37
36
40. Playa Bonita Cozumel, Mexico Head to the island’s eastern shores, where wide-open beaches stretch out along coral reef-lined coasts. One of the best spots for swimming is Punta Chiqueros, a section of Playa Bonita that has a thin crescent of talcum-soft white sand and generally smaller waves.

YO U W E R E H E R E 40TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
HAWAII
4-0 Part One
Two RCI members from Bolton have a 40th celebration of their own…
I ALL SMILES: (Main Picture) Jeff and Marina on their wedding day on 24th August 1974 and (above) the happy couple in Tenerife, at Beverly Hills Heights (2398)
30 SPRING / SUMMER 2014 |
n August Jeff and Marina Lang will have been married for 40 years. Here they share what RCI membership has brought to their family during that time. The couple are heading off to Hawaii to celebrate and in a future issue of Endless Vacation you can see how the partying went. “We met when we were 16 years old at a disco,” Marina recalls. Fast forward a few years, and the Langs were married in a local church, followed by a reception near their home town of Bolton. “Our wedding was on 24th August, it was a lovely sunny day. We had two bridesmaids — Jeff’s sister and my cousin, and Jeff’s friend was best man. We didn’t have a lot of money back then, so our honeymoon was a long weekend in Blackpool!”
40 YEARS OF HOLIDAYS
The childhood sweethearts are certainly making up for the lack of travel adventure in their early years, as they have booked a two-week RCI exchange in Honolulu and Big Island in Hawaii to celebrate their Ruby Wedding anniversary. They fly off in September. “I organise all our holidays, so I added an ongoing search for Hawaii in April last year. When RCI found a match for us — I was over the moon and couldn’t wait to call Jeff at work to let him know,” said Marina. The Lancashire couple bought their first timeshare after some bad experiences on package holidays, Jeff explained: “We don’t like package holidays as you’re in with the masses, and since having children we just wanted freedom and space. We didn’t

want to be disappointed again by a small, uncomfortable hotel room with a lack of quality and standards. With RCI Gold Crown, we know wherever we go we will get 5-star standards.” Marina added: “Jeff ’s friend recommended timeshare to us, and we have never looked back since purchasing two weeks at Las Brisas (1733) in Lanzarote. Timeshare allows us to holiday how we want, to relax and go at our own pace.” Lifestyle Choice When their children grew up, the Langs decided to purchase a week at Orange Lake Resort (8896) in Orlando as a lifestyle and value choice. We asked Jeff and Marina to pick out their most memorable holiday to date “Where do we start?” they answered. “There are so many. South Africa was stunning. The wildlife was incredible in Canada and we enjoyed scenic walks in Vancouver across some breathtaking landscapes, including the Rockies. “We had looked at booking a hotel independently but realised it would cost

a fortune. After looking in the RCI Resort Directory, we booked Vancouver through an exchange — it was great value. “We loved California and seeing the Hollywood sign, the walk of fame, and we enjoyed some retail therapy in Carlsbad and visiting the beautiful city of San Diego. “We have loved it all, so we struggle to pick just one!” said Jeff. Marina agreed: “We went to see the Grand Canyon while we were in Las Vegas which was amazing.” The couple always have a big family holiday every year, and as they will be in Hawaii this year, they didn’t want the kids to miss out. “The children are all grown up now, so we purchase Guest Certificates so they can all have a holiday too. Sarah is off to Canada in May, Alex will be going off to Tenerife in March and Jenny will be going to Cornwall in August with our two grandsons. Our son Phil is still planning his trip,” said Marina. “We consider our timeshare and RCI membership as a holiday pot for the whole family to use. It works well for us.
RCI has brought us the world, not just for us, but our kids too — it’s amazing!” The Langs are no strangers to holiday celebrations: “Our daughter Sarah is getting married in Orlando next February, so we booked two apartments for 12 of us to attend. Our timeshare is being used for all kinds of celebrations. We visited Cape Town in South Africa for our 30th anniversary and the food was just fantastic,” she added. Aside from their upcoming holiday, we asked them what their plans are for the day of their anniversary. “We don’t know. It’s all a big surprise which the children are organising for us, and it took a bit of planning between all the holidays they are going on with their RCI Guest Certificates!” Finally we asked the couple to reveal their secret to 40 years of marriage: “You have to share, communicate and keep the romance in your marriage. A simple kiss goodnight and telling your partner you love them goes a long way.” If you have used your timeshare for a special occasion, why not share your story? See page 6 to contact us.

E X P LO R E GOA
THE OTHER
GOA
To the thousands of visitors who flock to this little Indian state for the sun and the sand, the real Goa lies as hidden as the elusive tigers in its forests. B Y C H R Y S E L L E D ’ S I LVA D I A S
D
id you know that Goa is called the ‘Rome of the East’? With its centuries of cultural influences from Western shores and from within the Indian subcontinent, Goa has one of India’s most unique perspectives on art, music, architecture and culture.
Wildlife and Water Goa’s green stretches extend into five wildlife sanctuaries and one national park. Pug marks (‘pug’ means foot in Hindi) have been spotted in the Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and in April 2013, tigers were caught on camera for the first time in Goa’s forests. While you can’t go on a tiger safari yet, a trip into the wilderness will give you a break from the beach. Take a trip to the spectacular Dudhsagar Falls (literally Sea of Milk) high up in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. You can hike there from a little town called Collem or hire a four-wheel drive through your resort that will take you to the falls and back. En route, stop at Goa’s oldest temple, the 12th century Mahadeva Temple at Tambdi Surla. Carved out of basalt stone, this intricate and elaborately
decorated structure is still an active place of worship and you will marvel at the craftsmanship. If you would rather stay close to civilisation, head to a spice plantation where an experienced guide will reveal how the most popular spices are grown and point out plants with medicinal properties. Did you know chillies were brought to India by the Portuguese? A spice plantation indulges your sense of smell. Watch peppercorns dangle like grapes, and banana trees dip with the weight of the fruit. The heady fragrance of nutmeg and cinnamon mingles with the gentle breeze and gives you a taste of nature’s perfume. At the Sahakari Spice Farm in Ponda (sahakarifarms.com), you can try your hand (and legs) at climbing a straight-as-a-lamp-post betel-nut tree or make an Indian fantasy come true with an elephant ride around the plantation. You can also choose to wash an elephant, but be prepared to get soaked yourself if you do! If you are lucky, you may spot kingfishers, owls and parrots while you enjoy a freshly-cooked Goan meal served on green banana leaves. Also in Ponda is the Butterfly Conservatory of Goa (bcogoa.org). The best season for spotting butterflies is
October to December. Try this at their popular ‘Breakfast with Butterflies’ where a buffet breakfast at the Conservatory is followed by a guided tour that talks about the local biodiversity, with activities for children such as face-painting and, for the adults, a short trek up to the plateau. The Butterfly Park is an open area with trees, herbs and flowering plants that attract the butterflies, and now includes a small aviary and ponds stocked with small fish.
THE MAJESTIC AND THE MAGNIFICENT: Visit a Spice Plantation in Goa to enjoy an elephant ride and the spectacular Dudhsagar Falls are not to be missed.

For those of you itching to get onto Goa’s maze of rivers, creeks and finally the ocean, there’s a lot to do on the water. Try bird-watching at the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Chorao where a variety of migratory and local birds nest and feed among the mangroves. Bright blue kingfishers, egrets and larger birds like the lesser adjutant stork are common visitors. Or go crocodile spotting on a boat ride through Goa’s backwaters. Look out for the ‘mugger’ crocodile in the Cumbarjua canal, lazily basking in the sun. Dolphin-spotting trips (bettysgoa.com/cruise) are also very popular. An early morning boat ride into the Arabian Sea takes you on a merry search for the playful creatures. Most tour operators will also include time for fishing, a swim and a ride around the Aguada Bay for a glimpse of the Aguada Fort. You can also hire
a yacht for a day and watch the sun go down, with the wind in your hair. Why not get out your fishing rod and catch your own dinner? If you fancy fishing, most villages have a spot where the locals congregate with their fishing rods and are happy to include a visitor or two. Culture Curry The Feast of the Three Kings (January) is celebrated with great pomp in the village of Cansaulim with three young boys chosen to represent the three kings. The procession includes horses, palanquins (covered sedan chairs) and elaborate costumes. Sao Joao (June) involves plunging headlong into a well or river to celebrate the feast of St John the Baptist. Hugely popular in Siolim, the villagers jump into the water to retrieve gifts thrown in by others. Check for Sao Joao celebrations organised
Historical Delight When you are not dancing the night away, spend time exploring some of Goa’s many museums. From art to aviation, there’s something here for every member of the family. by local hotels where you can don a traditional copel (a crown of flowers) and splash in the pool instead. Holi, the festival of colour, (usually in March) is also celebrated in Goa. Being drenched in coloured water or finding your face covered in purple, bright pink or sunshine yellow can be an out-ofthis-world experience. While a safe and enjoyable experience, like many adventures overseas, it is advisable to exercise a degree of caution and common sense. The Feast of St Francis Xavier, Goa’s patron saint, will have a special resonance this year with the Exposition of the Relics of St Xavier, an event that happens once in ten years (22 November 2014 – 4 January 2015). Goa Carnival is of course the biggest party of all, hosted across three days. Elaborate floats, dancers, costumes, street dances and the appearance of King Momo and his consorts are the highlights of this event.

Take a day trip to a spice plantation in Goa. 5. Colourful powders ready for throwing at Holi, the festival of colour. 6. of the Santa Monica Chapel in Old Goa. With large models of dinosaurs and other animals, a planetarium, a theatre with 3-D science films and a museum, children and adults will enjoy the Goa Science Museum (at Miramar beach; goasciencecentre.in). My personal favourite is the Goa Chitra museum (goachitra.com) in Benaulim. Goa Chitra is the result of years of passionate and devoted collecting by artist Victor Hugo Gomes. The museum is an ethnographical delight. The elaborate collections depict Goa’s past in detail and the narrative has captivated Hollywood stars, politicians and Nobel Prize winners. And when you have finished sightseeing, head for the shops. The beach belt is lined with souvenir shops selling everything from scarves to intricate Tibetan jewellery. For unusual lamps and furniture made with leaves and recycled, natural items, I recommend Sonja Weder’s Soto
Decor in Candolim (sotodecor.com/). In Panjim, shop for beautiful paper and stationery at Paperworks (Miramar, near the old football ground). The Saturday Night Market at Arpora is another must-do on your itinerary. Hundreds of stalls lined with designer and flea-market clothes, jewellery, food and accessories for your home to entice you, along with performances by musicians, jugglers and visiting performers from all over the globe. A Feast for the Senses No trip to Goa is complete without raving about the food. Goan food can be spicy, but traditional food is often moderately spiced for Western tastes. Try the pork sorpotel (a spicy red pork curry) at Nostalgia (fernandosnostalgia. wordpress.com), the Crab Cafreal (crab meat in a green curry) at George Bar near the Panjim Church, and the Chicken Xacuti, pronounced ‘sha-ku-ti’ — an intriguing blend of coconut and many
finely-ground spices — from Ashok Bar, a tiny little tavern in Sao Tome, Panjim. If you want a break from the curries, try Baba’s Wood Café — an Italian restaurant in Panjim with its wood-fire oven, generous starters, lusty arias over the sound system and an impressive menu of fine international wines. Village bakeries will also tempt you with the crustiest pastries and savoury snacks. Try the prawn rissois (a shrimp pastry) or the coconut biscuits topped with a little red cherry. For dessert, try a Gadbad, a crazy concoction of three or more scoops of different flavours of ice cream in a tall glass, topped with seasonal fruits like bananas, pineapples and mango cubes. It is worth taking the time to look for the real Goa — it is a treasure trove of attractions waiting to be discovered.

SHOPPING MARRAKESH, MOROCCO
The quick way to shop in this Moroccan city’s chaotic medina, souks and more. BY RICHARD ALLEMAN
M PHOTOS: THINKSTOCK, SUPERSTOCK.
arrakesh is filled with countless shops, from the teeming souks (markets) to the smart emporiums of Guéliz. With the maze-like medinas and opportunity to haggle — successful retail therapy here depends upon knowing what you want and where to find it. Here is a master plan — and you can expect to stumble upon some unexpected treasures. THE GREAT SOUK After mingling with the acrobats and orange-juice sellers in the famous Place Jemaa el Fna, dive into the Great Souk, just off the square. Souks are a vital part of the city’s heart and the following loop takes in some of the best sights. From the northwestern edge of Jemaa el Fna, enter the souk to the left of the Café Argana. Bear left at the small square (Place Bab Ftouh) and pass through an arch to Rue Laksour. On your
left is Beldi, a boutique which dresses some of the city’s most fashionable residents in chic jackets and elegant kaftans. Laksour feeds into the attractive Rue Mouassine, whose shops sell a similar assortment of lanterns, pottery and bright-coloured silk fabrics. Further along, the jewellery shop Alyed Gallery, overflows with ethnic Berber pendants and bracelets at fixed prices if you prefer not to haggle. Just beyond, turn right at the Mouassine Mosque, with its massive brass doors, to find the Souk des Teinturiers (dyers’ market), where freshly dyed yarn and fabrics hang across the narrow streets. Equally colourful is the nearby Souk des Babouches, devoted to the classic pointed-toe Moroccan slippers. The proprietor at El Mardi Boujemaa speaks English, sells at fair prices and has a rich variety of slippers. At Rahba Kedima square, take a break at Café des Epices, a cool three-level café. Order a mint tea
and watch the action on the spice stalls edging the square. THE MELLAH South of the medina, between the Bahia Palace and the Badi Palace, the vibrant former Jewish quarter called the Mellah offers excellent shopping. For spices, visit the Bab Es Salam Market displaying cumin and curries in distinctive cones. Buy a bag of Ras el Hanout, the secret spice mix for tajines, if you plan on cooking a Moroccan dish. Nearby, Place des Ferblantiers is edged with workshops making and selling Moroccan lanterns. Original Design, tucked in a corner of the souk, carries inexpensive gifts such as tiny tajines and embroidered napkins. To end the day, stop for a well-earned drink on the roof terrace at Kosy Bar which overlooks the square and the salmon-coloured walls of the ancient Badi Palace.

The Cretan Way f you were to approach the northwest coast of Crete by sea, as the Venetians did in the 16th century, the view would be much the same today as it was then: turquoise waters lapping against wide beaches of golden sand that run for miles beneath the majestic backdrop of the White Mountains. The massive Fortezza, the largest fortress the Venetians ever built, still towers over Rethymnon, which stands in the middle of this beautiful coastal stretch. From its ramparts there are splendid views over the town and its palm-lined promenade. A quaint Venetian lighthouse guards the inner harbour, which is crammed with fishing boats and ringed with fish tavernas displaying the day’s fresh catch.

Experience Greek living on the picturesque Mediterranean islands of Crete and Skiáthos. BY D O N N A DAI LE Y
FROM COAST TO CRAFTS: Achladias Beach in Skiáthos, olive oil — a tasty accompaniment to Greek meals (inset left) and the village of Margarítes — well known for its distinctive pottery.
Seafood is king here on Greece’s southernmost island, with fresh swordfish, sea bass, bream, mullet and squid — simply grilled and served with lemon. But it’s complemented by the quality local produce of the countryside. Drive into the mountains, and you’ll see thyme, oregano, marjoram and other wild herbs growing along the roadside. These are used abundantly in Greek cooking. Buy them at the local market for an aromatic souvenir to use back home. Sheep and goats roam freely here, providing a supply of local meat, as well as yogurt, feta and Cretan cheeses made from their milk — all with a fresh, full flavour. Sweet Cretan thyme honey graces every breakfast table and is baked into luscious baklava and other desserts.
The food on Crete is naturally organic, for the islanders farm and cook as their ancestors have done for centuries. Research over nearly six decades has shown the Cretan diet to be among the healthiest in the world. The island’s 35-50 million olive trees play a big role. Crete produces olive oil that is especially tasty as well as healthy; over 90 per cent is classed as extra virgin. As the main source of fat, it’s used in virtually everything, from salad dressings to dishes such as moussaka. You’ll find all your Greek favourites here, but for more adventurous eating, look for rural Cretan dishes featuring rabbit and snails which sometimes show up on the menu. Red wine from the barrel is the traditional complement to Crete’s rustic
cuisine. The island’s climate is best suited to red wines, with the most popular bottled wines coming from the central and eastern wine-making regions. Rethymnon celebrates both its wines and the Cretan diet with an annual festival in July (dates vary), held in the Municipal Garden. Along with free tastings and cooking demonstrations, there is music, dancing and cultural events. In August, take in classical and folk concerts, and theatrical performances, during the annual Renaissance Festival. Rethymnon has many good restaurants. Thalassografia (the name means ‘sea scapes’) is a casual, alfresco café near the fortress and inner harbour. Set on a cliff side, tables are arranged on

descending terraces with fantastic views over the sea. In the old town, dine in the garden courtyard of a Venetian mansion at Avli (avli.gr), one of the city’s best. The atmospheric old town is full of remnants of its historic past, from Turkish mosques to the Venetian loggia. As you wander, you’ll find shops selling traditional Cretan crafts such as leather goods, lace and embroidery, and olive wood items. For ceramics, take a day trip to the hill village of Margarítes. It’s known for its distinctive pottery, and you can visit the workshops of local artisans while exploring the pretty town.
SKIÁTHOS SIGHTS: Evangelistrías monastery and a typical cobblestoned street in Skiáthos.
If the Old Port looks familiar, it’s probably because it featured in the film Mamma Mia. Although much of the movie was filmed on the sister island of Skópelos, many beach scenes were filmed on the fine sands of Skiáthos. Other scenes were staged around St Nikolaos bell tower. Take a boat trip to the larger popular beaches, or to remote coves and quiet strands that are only accessible by sea. Round-the-island excursions often take in three natural sea grottoes on the north shore. Nearby is the stunning Lalária Beach, with its famous natural arch and white-pebbled shore backed against steep cliffs. You can also visit the medieval fortress of Kástro, set on a northwestern promontory. Pirate raids drove the islanders to build a fortified settlement here in the 16th century, and it served as their capital for some 300 years. Four churches, with remnants of ancient frescoes and a carved wooden altarpiece, survive among the overgrown ruins. ARCHES OF WONDER: The natural arch of Lalária Beach.
Other boat trips will take you to the nearby islands of Argos and Tsougkriá. And there’s a longer excursion to the National Marine Park of Alónissos, which protects rare sea birds, seals and dolphins. Skiáthos has many fine churches and monasteries, well worth exploring. Some can be reached by car, others only by footpath. The paths can sometimes be steep, so check locally before you set out as to the length and difficulty of the walk. Pretty Evangelistrías monastery, north of Skiáthos Town, was founded by monks from Athos. Greece’s first flag was created and flown here in 1807. Not far away, the lovely Taxiárchis church is covered in plates shaped like a cross. The 15th century Panagía Kechriás, which lies south of the Kástro, is the island’s oldest chapel. It has splendid frescoes and a star-covered blue ceiling. A miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, now in the Tríon Ierarchón church in Skiáthos Town, was found in a tree near Panagía Kounístra in the 17th century. Today the attraction of this monastery is its heavenly view, which takes in the whole coastline of this beautiful island. These island retreats really do take you back to the days when life was more leisurely and there was time to savour every sun-kissed moment.

Treasures of Skiáthos If you sailed from Crete across the Aegean Sea to its northern waters, you would reach the Sporades and the beautiful island of Skiáthos. Its coastline is fringed with inviting beaches, around 60 or more, from turquoise coves to sweeping, sandy bays such as Koukounariés. Inland lies a green landscape of pine-covered hills and lush olive groves. With its red-tiled roofs and cobbled streets spreading over two small hills, Skiáthos Town is a pretty place. Stroll the lively waterfront, browse the boutiques and antiques shops, or wander into the old quarter to explore the picturesque residential lanes. The town’s two harbours are divided by a wooded peninsula, called Bourtzi, where a former fortress is now an exhibition and cultural centre.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

Believe it or not, sin city offers plenty of activities for families. From shark tanks to ziplines and the world’s tallest ferris wheel; here are attractions to bedazzle those of all ages. BY ANDRE A B ENNET T

et’s get one thing out of the way: Las Vegas is no children’s theme park. But the city does fancy itself a magnet for children. From the rides at the Adventuredome to the Nevada State Museum’s 11-metre Ichthyosaur skeleton, the city and its surroundings offer all kinds of family-friendly attractions. Here is a guide to the sin-free side of Vegas. Cruise The Strip You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy the Strip when you have little ones in tow. Some of the most childcaptivating sights are free, including the choreographed Fountains of Bellagio (bellagio.com; every half hour starting at 3pm weekdays and 12pm on weekends) and the fire-blowing Mirage Volcano (mirage.com; every hour starting at 6pm). Both these resorts also offer family fun inside. At the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a team of

CAN’T MISS IT: 1. The Bellagio Conservatory, steps from the Strip and free to the public. 2. Families enjoying games in the fairground basement of Excalibur Hotel. 3. Character meet and greet at the Fremont Street Experience. 4. Getting crafty at the Discovery Children’s Museum. 5. Las Vegas’s iconic welcome sign 6. Ziplining through downtown’s Fremont Street Experience.
140 horticulturalists transform the nearly 1,300 square-metre space into a spectacular — and free — garden with tens of thousands of flowers every season. And Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat (adults $20, children $15), at the Mirage, is home to leopards, panthers and endangered white tigers and lions — among the rarest big cats in the world. You can watch the resident dolphins at play from the underground viewing area or, if you’re up for a serious splurge, sign the teens up for the Trainer for a Day programme (13 and older; starting from $495). Another great stop for animal lovers is the Wildlife Habitat at the Flamingo (flamingolasvegas.com; free), an oasis of koi ponds, streams, waterfalls and — you guessed it — pink flamingos, as well as Chinese pheasants, pelicans and other birds. Further down the Strip, Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay (sharkreef.com; adults $18, children $12) houses more than 2,000 creatures, including, of course, all kinds of sharks

— be sure to look out for the nurse shark which is almost three-metres long. Though entry to M&M’s World (mmsworld.com) is free, your wallet will take at least a little hit when the children start asking for sweets and souvenirs. Watch the free 3-D movie about the adventures of M&M’s characters, and snap a family portrait next to the M&M’s-sponsored Camry race car. You’ll find more retail adventure at the Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes (grandcanalshoppes.com), known for its ‘streetmosphere’ of dancers, opera singers and live ‘statues.’ Strolling the centre’s cobblestoned streets is free, while the gondola rides along the Venetian’s canals — and the gondolier serenades that come with them — are worth the fee ($19 per person). If there are thrill seekers among you, the Adventuredome at Circus Circus, is a must (adventuredome.com; day passes, adults $30, children $17). The indoor theme park is the largest in the country and packs families in for heart-pounding
rides like the Sling Shot (riders shoot straight up into the air at four G’s) and Chaos (imagine spinning every which way at breakneck speeds). A merry-goround, games and tamer rides are great for the youngest visitors — and those who prefer to hold down their lunch.

Its outdoor Boneyard exhibit contains more than 150 flashing neon treasures. Aspiring crime busters will love the Mob Museum (themobmuseum.org; adults $20, children $14). Located in the former courthouse where the famous Kefauver mob trials were held, it teaches everything there is to know about organised crime in the States, from past to present. Exhibits explore topics such as how law enforcement has fought — and defeated — mobsters over the years, and are packed with riveting artefacts.
Serious daredevils make for the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower, at the north end of the Strip (stratospherehotel.com; admission, adults $18, children $10). Its Big Shot ride is the tallest in the world, at 112 storeys, and shoots passengers over 48 metres into the air at over 45 miles per hour; the X Scream teeter-totter plunges riders headfirst over the tower’s vertiginous edge. Many visitors are happy just to take in the view from the observation deck and watch helicopters buzz by at eye level. New openings in Las Vegas are two more high-action attractions, both set to open in the new Linq district (caesars.com/thelinq): the High Roller — at over 167 metres the world’s tallest Ferris wheel — and Brooklyn Bowl, a bowling alley and music venue. Downtown Discoveries Just north of the Strip is downtown, the once down-and-out ‘Glitter Gulch’ and now a lively playground for all ages. Recent additions include the Discovery Children’s Museum 46 SPRING / SUMMER 2014 |
(discoverykidslv.org; admission $12), where interactive exhibits encourage creative logical thinking. The museum’s 21-metre, 12-level tower — aka the Summit — has slides and climbing tubes to entertain those with restless bodies as well as restless minds. No downtown excursion is complete without a spin through the Fremont Street Experience (vegasexperience.com). The pedestrian mall and entertainment extravaganza’s new, slot-machine-themed zipline, SlotZilla, propels riders from a ‘coin tray’ through the heart of the Experience ($30). Terra firma tours are also exhilarating: LEDs dance across the street’s barrel-vault canopy cover and free concerts are relatively easy to find. You’ll spot numerous flashy signs on and around Fremont Street — keep an eye out for the waving ‘Vegas Vic’ and the sparkling high-heeled shoe of the Silver Slipper Gambling Hall — but the new Neon Museum (neonmuseum.org; admission $18, children six and under free) delivers the ultimate display of iconic Vegas signage.
40 YEARS OF HOLIDAYS
Nature Break One of the great things about Las Vegas is that you don’t have to go far for a little fresh air — or fresh chocolate. Drive 15 minutes south of the Strip to the Ethel M. Chocolates store (ethelm.com), where you’ll find a botanical cactus garden (amblers welcome) and a fanciful chocolate factory (free tours!). A 10-minute drive west of the Strip leads to the Springs Preserve (springspreserve.org; adults $19, children $11), home of the recently relocated Nevada State Museum — and an 11-metre Ichthyosaur skeleton. For serious hiking, head 34 miles northwest of the Strip, where over 49 miles of trails thread the flanks of Mount Charleston. If you go on a Sunday afternoon, you may catch a performance by the lederhosen-clad polka band at Mt. Charleston Lodge (mtcharlestonlodge.com). Vegas may still be marketing to gamers, but with this much excitement, who needs the tables?

PERFECT PIAZZAS

enice’s Piazza San Marco. Siena’s Piazza del Campo. Piazza della Signoria in Florence. The iconic piazzas of Italy have played central roles in the country’s history — that you even recognise their names underscores their significance. Centuries after these town squares were created, their gravitational pull is as strong as ever. The piazza is still the main stage for Italian city life, where locals and visitors stroll, flirt, shop, chat and sit back to watch the street theatre unfold. But not all of Italy’s central squares are as famous as Rome’s Campo de’ Fiori. Here are seven lesser-known piazzas that offer as much architectural and communal drama, without all the crowds. MASSA MARITTIMA Piazza Garibaldi This walled hill town is in ‘the other Tuscany’, the slice of the province along the Tyrrhenian Sea known as the Maremma. A slightly askew triangle, defined by the stairs and facade of the 13th century San Cerbone Cathedral, the 48 SPRING / SUMMER 2014 |

piazza is the setting for Lirica in Piazza, a performing arts festival that has been hosted here for the past 28 years. For a few days each August, the small triangle becomes an opera stage — the perfect setting for this public space that is itself an aria. SIRACUSA Piazza del Duomo The Roman philosopher Cicero described the temple that stood on this spot 2,000 years ago as a beacon, its gilded doors reflecting the sunshine and helping sailors guide their ships. Over the millennia, the house of worship was repurposed, destroyed, plundered,

rebuilt, redecorated — resulting in a semi-oval public space where surrounding buildings articulate the styles of nearly every century. Columns of the Duomo were taken from the Doric temple of Athena, previously on this spot. The Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco represents the restrained symmetry of the 16th century. The facade of the cathedral, rebuilt after an earthquake in 1693, is Sicilian Baroque, with ornate wrought iron gates and elegant statues. Walk around this piazza and it’s as if you were walking through time. GUIDING LIGHT: Sicily’s Piazza del Duomo dates from ancient Roman times. A temple to the goddess Athena stood on the site of today’s cathedral.
MAKING A POINT: The top of the triangular Piazza Garibaldi (above), in Tuscany, is formed by the San Cerbone Cathedral. Piazza Maggiore (right), the medieval heart of Bologna and the town of Marostica’s famous chessboard (below).
BOLOGNA Piazza Maggiore This may be the most underrated piazza in Italy. Here the stern Italian Gothic brick Basilica of San Petronio faces off against the grandly arcaded Palazzo del Podestà. The piazza’s length is a study in architectural history, with the squintyeyed, pointed windows of the Palazzo d’Accursio and its late-medieval sibling, the Palazzo dei Notai, staring down the arches and pilasters of the Renaissance Palazzo dei Banchi. Stroll through this former seat of money changers and bankers today and you’ll find yourself embraced, not by the echoes of tinkling gold coins, but by the aromas emanating from a web of narrow streets housing some of the city’s finest food markets.
of a spectacle in which performers dressed in costumes of the Middle Ages enact a live chess game. The show is allegedly based on a match played in the 15th century to settle a romantic rivalry between aristocrats for the hand of Lionora Parisio, whose father was the Lord of Marostica Castle. It is reenacted with banners and parades. Even if not true, it is a fantastically colourful story.
LUCCA Piazza dell’ Anfiteatro Piazzas are often brilliant accumulations of history, and this one is no exception. The elliptical shape reflects its Roman origin as a stadium for large-scale events and gladiatorial games. Over the centuries, though, it has lived many lives — as a prison, a storage place for salt, a communal vegetable garden and terraced

however, the splendid mosaics inside have remained a constant since the 13th century. The rest of the square is reinforced with buildings built after the 16th century, and the piazza remains the living room for residents of Trastevere, the now very gentrified former workingclass quarter across the Tiber.
ROME Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere In a city of operatic Baroque piazzas, this one stands out as a light, lilting piece. It takes its name from one of the oldest churches in Rome (erected circa AD 340), which dominates the space, although the present structure is a combination of additions and subtractions — thankfully,
VERONA Piazza delle Erbe The Palazzo Maffei dominates this long, slim triangle. But that’s the piazza’s only aristocratic touch. The sides are composed of a pleasing miscellany of residential buildings that look as though they were slotted in when a space became available. The effect is not dissimilar to that of a nicely worn-in sofa. Once you’ve been amply cradled in the piazza’s comfort,

uala Lumpur is the hottest shopping spot in Southeast Asia. With a population of less than two million, it has all the amenities of a much larger city yet retains an intimate, almost cosy charm. Wandering the streets of KL — as the abbreviation-crazy Malaysians call their capital — you soon discover that the city is one great emporium. Retail outlets range from pavement vendors working out of cardboard boxes to luxury boutiques and department stores, all offering an alluring array of chic, delicious and entertaining ways to spend.
STAR ATTRACTION: (Main image) Star Hill Gallery Mall.
POSH MARKETS KL is a young city. It was little more than a tin-miners’ village until the 20th century, but then it came into its own in the years after World War II. From the beginning, Jalan Bukit Bintang (Starhill Street) has been the city’s prime retail district. Today it’s an elegant, tree-shaded avenue of lavish international shops and malls — the modern Asian marketplace,
air-conditioned against the steamy tropical heat. The poshest of these is the theatrically lit seven-storey Starhill Gallery, where tuxedoed musicians play waltzes on grand pianos beside the escalators. Up there with Dior and Louis Vuitton is Jendela KL, the established brand of the Malaysian batik designer Faisol Abdullah. He made history by creating what was billed as the world’s most expensive dress, the ‘Nightingale of Kuala Lumpur’. Valued at more than RM99 million, it was adorned with 751 diamonds weighing more than 1,100 carats. Faisol is best known for his intensely colourful men’s silk shirts and handmade suits, but in 2008 he launched a line of batik products for the home. Look for his luxuriant floral upholstery fabrics and hand-woven ikat place mats in shades of saffron and cinnamon (RM112* each). A group of investors stepped in and converted it into a shopping mall. Central is a great place to pick up T-shirts and other souvenirs from pushcart vendors. There are also shops selling antiques, vintage toys and Malaysian crafts like songket, a fine cloth woven with gold and silver threads. KL’s most delicious place to shop for antiques is Precious Old China, a Malacca-style Nyonya restaurant at Central, where even the chair you sit on is for sale. Red-silk chair covers from Penang, embroidered in the enchanting, naive Straits-Chinese style, are RM2960; vintage shadow-box collections of butterflies and bizarre Malaysian insects are RM329. MALAY TRADITION Without a doubt, the best-known Malaysian brand is Royal Selangor, the pewter-maker. A generation ago, the collection was showing its age, but the firm has since lured top international designers to create exquisite and innovative housewares. Royal Selangor products are sold at fine stores throughout the city and at the airport, but the most fun place to shop for pewter is at the factory in the suburb of Setapak. You’ll start your tour in the small museum, then visit the factory floor, where you can make your own pewter dish, and finish up in a beautiful shop that sells a wide array of teapots, fruit bowls and picture frames. Startling colour, street music, fireworks, sizzling beaches, ancient culture meets fiery fiestas… Mix in the magic of a five-star all-inclusive experience at one of seven Palace Resorts’ properties in Cancún and Cozumel and you have a holiday made in heaven! BY BARBAR A PECK AND HELEN FOSTER
J
ust a 60- to 90-minute drive from the array of Palace Resorts’ fivestar properties is the mesmerising resort of Tulum (pronounced too-loom) on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Tulum makes a great day trip from Cancún and Cozumel, and is a whole other experience. Here are four great reasons to visit. Mind & Body Beautiful: Many visitors come to Tulum to find themselves; meditating on the beach, doing yoga and confronting their hopes and fears in the temazcal, a Mayan sweat lodge. The yoga culture permeates much of the scene along the beach road and many resorts offer classes where you don’t have to be a guest to sign up. At Maya Tulum, sessions are held in breezy halls with thatched roofs and iPod surround-sound systems. Classes cover all abilities and beginners shouldn’t feel intimidated (classes $12). The spa offers massages, body scrubs and Mayan skin-care treatments that use the local honey, chillies, agave and clay. Paradise Beach: Many resorts in Tulum run beach clubs with bars and restaurants. Lots of visitors make a beeline for Playa Paraiso on the beach road. You can rent a lounge chair ($4) or a beach bed ($12) to spread out on, and the fee includes use of the facilities. Here boats scoot out to the reef laden with
divers, families play in the waves and you can easily spend the day simply lunching at the palapa-roofed restaurant. Roaming The Ruins: Each day visitors come from Cancún to explore the Mayan ruins at Tulum. The site is modest in size so your visit can easily be combined with other activities. Arrive early before the heat of the day — pay $4.50 entrance fee — and ask a stateappointed guide to show you around. You can ride the tram ($2) or just walk the trail to get there, as it’s less than ten minutes on foot. Your visit will be much richer with a guide and the fee is around $45 for a group of four. The ruins are peaceful in the early morning, with breezes coming in off the water, iguanas basking on the paths and majestic pelicans soaring just offshore. Keep your ears open for the cenzontle, also known as the Mexican mockingbird or the bird of a thousand calls. And when the sun starts to blaze, head for the wooden staircase on one side of the castle which takes you down to the beach where you can cool off in the sea. Back In Time: The spacious enclosures of Aktun Chen, a 450-acre nature park just north of Tulum, are well worth a visit. See spider monkeys, pacas (striped two-foot-long rodents, like guinea pigs) and white-tailed deer or javelinas (pigs). The big attraction
is its five-million-year-old ‘dry cave.’ A guide leads your group along a winding trail past artfully illuminated limestone stalactites and stalagmites. After an hour or so you reach a breathtaking sight — a gigantic cavern opens in the floor with a 12-metre-deep pool at the bottom. The hundreds of stalactites reflected in the water look like ghostly, multitowered castles. For the adventurous there are ziplines and cenote swims — underground freshwater pools lit by shafts of sunlight and accessed by broad steps and gravel paths.

Palace Resorts are all about catering for as many different leisure activities and passions as possible. Guests can enjoy golf, spa treatments, snorkelling, sail boat cruises, nightly entertainment at every resort, including, Moon Palace (4227) at the Noir Nightclub; Wet ‘n’ Wild Waterparks; Flowrider wave and surf experience; The Playroom for the toddlers; Wired —a hideaway for the teens with live DJs, video games and a snack bar. The only restriction on guest movement is the exclusion of children from the three adults-only resorts — Sun Palace (2902), Le Blanc Spa Resort (4104) and Isla Mujeres Palace (A495). These resorts are havens of peace and tranquillity featuring a highly personalised service, romantic beachside apartments, dinners overlooking the ocean and cruises into the Caribbean sunsets. you would need to return to ensure you sample all the resorts have to offer. Playacar Palace (2994) just minutes away from Playa del Carmen, is a fine dining experience not to be missed. Palace Resorts are so dedicated to ensuring their guests’ holiday experiences are perfect at every turn, they are also happy to help you plan and book your holiday excursions to the many attractions on the Mayan Riviera. And just when you think it can’t get any better, it does — because this resort company pays its guests to enjoy themselves! As an all-inclusive holiday experience, meals and drinks on resort are all in with the cost of the holiday. But Palace Resorts have taken the all-inclusive offering to a new level by giving its guests Resort Credit to be used in paying for on-resort activities and treatments, as well as tour excursions. The value of your Resort Credit depends on the length of stay, ranging from $1,500 for a week’s stay, up to $3,000 for a two-week visit. The Credit is per booking and $1,500 must be spent in its week of allocation and can’t be carried over to week two. However, if you don’t manage to spend your Resort Credit during your stay, it can either

be held on your account to be used during your next stay or you can gift unused Credit to family or friends who may be planning their own holiday at a Palace Resorts’ property. Resort Credit becomes exchangeable two weeks after the original guests’ stay and remain valid for up to 12 months. The last word goes to Juan Carlos Seminario, Senior Vice President, Global Sales at Palace Resorts, who told Endless Vacation what his team wanted for their RCI member guests. He said: “We wanted to personalise the all-inclusive experience as much as possible, increasing the value for our guests by making sure the cost of all the ‘extras’ are included in the booked holiday. “By offering our guests the opportunity to use Resort Credit towards a variety of treats — from romantic dinners and excursions to golf outings, spa treatments and even swimming with our friendly dolphins — we hope we have made sure that whatever their likes and desires while staying with us, everyone can enjoy something that is special to them and take away many amazing memories of an exceptional holiday.”
